The DeWitt Hospital and Nursing Home held their 7th Annual Spring Fling Health Fair and Blood Drive Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at the outpatient parking lot from 9:00 a.m.6:00 p.m. It was another huge success for the hospital with over 300 people attending the event this year. 110 units of blood were donated with PCCUA garnering the most points

and taking home the trophy. Lots of door prizes were given away along with hot dogs, popcorn and drinks. Bone Densitometry exams, lab tests including sugar, kidney function, liver function, electrolytes and more were offered for $20 and $25. Baptist Hospital, Pafford and Life Evac helicopters made appearances throughout the day.

EWITT POLICE REPORT

APRIL 20, 2015: Officer Johnathan Powell, was dispatched to an accident at the intersection of Cross and Washington.

Upon arrival, he met with Mr. Ethan Moss. Moss told him that he had stopped at the stop sign on Cross St and was looking at workers at the recycle center to his left. Moss said that he then started going and hadn’t noticed Mr. Bobby Childers approaching on Cross St to his right. Moss said that when he saw Mr. Childers’ vehicle, he tried stopping again, but that his brakes did not catch. He said that he usually has to pump his brakes “four or five times” before they engage.

Powell looked at both vehicles. Moss had damage to his front bumper on the driver’s side and also that his windshield was broken in several places. Moss stated that it was already damaged from hail. On Mr. Childers’ vehicle, Powell saw a scrape on the driver’s side above the back wheel.

Powell cited Mr. Moss for defective brakes.

Photos were taken of both vehicles.

APRIL 23, 2015: Officer Jody Chapman responded to an accident. Driver Alicia T. Dunn was traveling south on South Jefferson Street when she lost control and spun into the ditch on the west side of the street.

EMS arrived and looked at the toddler passenger.

Driver and passenger were then transported to the DeWitt City Hospital by personal vehicle.

APRIL 24, 2015: Officer Dillion was dispatched to Kroger parking lot in regards to a vehicle accident.

When he arrived he met Mrs. Sherry Dillion and Mrs Brittany Bateman. Mrs. Bateman advised Dillion that she was backing out of a parking spot and backed into Mrs. Dillion’s car.

There was a small dent in Mrs. Dillion’s car ( approx. 2 inches wide and 5 inches tall) on the front right bumper, right above the fog light.

Mrs. Bateman was written a citation for failure to provide proof of insurance.

Corps Lifts Small Craft Advisory for Arkansas River The DeWitt Public Library will host the 2015 Summer Reading Program on June 15th, 17th, and 19th from 9:00 – 10:30a.m.

This year’s theme is “Every Hero Has a Story” The Summer Reading Program is open for children ages 8-12. Parents will need to call or visit the library to register their child for this year’s program. Registration will be open from April 29th to May 13th.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Army Corps of Engineers has lifted the small craft advisory for the Arkansas River. Advisories are issued when flows reach 70,000 cubic feet per second. Even though flows have receded below that threshold, Corps officials urge boaters to always use caution when on the river.

Before setting out in a pleasure craft, dress for the weather, check flow conditions and file a float plan with friends or family. Wear a life jacket, and never operate a boat while intoxicated. Give commercial

towboats an extra wide berth for safety’s sake. They are heavier than freight trains and not nearly as maneuverable as pleasure boats. It can take a towboat more than a half mile to stop.

Obituary

April Meeting of the Grand Prairie Arts and Crafts Guild

Sharon Gruber Sharon Lee Gruber, 64, of Fort Smith passed away on April 21, 2015, at Mercy Hospice in Fort Smith. She was born on July 10, 1950, in Brinkley, AR. She was city clerk in Gillett, AR, for 15 years and also in Barling, AR. She had most recently worked in marketing for Hospice, and was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Fort Smith.

Sharon is preceded in death by her mother; Billie Jean Garris Holzhauer, and her husband; Bob Gruber.

Survivors include her daughter Sloan Beverburg, Barry Wood, and grandson Brunner Wood of Jersey City, NJ; her father, Harvey Holzhauer of Gillett; four siblings Tommy Holzhauer and his wife Margaret of Gillett, Mitzi Dixon and her husband Dennis of Gillett, Ray Holzhauer of Gillett, and Fred Holzhauer and his wife Melissa of Evening Shade; nieces and nephews and their families Shane and Samantha Holzhauer and Lacey and Colby, Maggie Holzhauer, Lyndsey Dilks, Collin and Sloane Holzhauer and Holden, Baylor Dixon, and Chandler and Peyton Holzhauer; and special cousins Gary and Debbie Holzhauer and their children Zach and Sage Holzhauer. She was a loving daughter, sister, and friend and a beloved mother and GiGi. Sharon loved life and always had a smile on her face.

Visitation was held Friday, April 24, 2015, from 5-7 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Gillett.

Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 25 at St. Paul Lutheran Church with burial St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery by Essex Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, P.O. April Birthdays at DeWitt Senior Center

The monthly meeting of the Grand Prairie Arts and Crafts Guild was called to order by President, Shelley Barber on Saturday, April 11th at 1:30 P.M. in the Fellowship Hall of the First Christian Church. Seven members were present as she asked for Treasurer, Alice Inman to give the financial report to the group and JoEllen Jackson, Secretary, to read the minutes from the last meeting. Both reports were accepted as read.

Details of the first Arts and Crafts Sale were discussed.

It will be Saturday, May 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and taking the place of the regular monthly meeting.

It will be located at the Farmers Market Pavilion next to the Chamber of Commerce on Main Street, here in Stuttgart. All crafters are welcome! The fee to set up your table will be $10.00. Call the numbers given at the end of this article for information and to reserve your space. Bring your own card/display tables at 8:00 a.m. to get set up, clean-up will begin after 4:00 p.m.

Each person displaying art or crafts must be in charge of their own tables and do their own set up and clean up.

It is hoped that this event will become an important yearly art and craft show and sale, and will attract attention to the artists and crafters of this area.

Many paintings and drawings were on display in the Fellowship hall from Betty Henderson, a member of the church. They are on sale for a donation to the church. Several beautiful works went home with members of the Guild. One beautiful painting will be on display during the event and will be raffled off !

Before I begin to write any news, I want to thank my Savior Jesus Christ for the healing process to my mind, soul and body that my strength is increasing day by day. Last but not least, thanks to everyone for the many prayers, encouraging words, phone calls, and the love shared.

Church: There are many church doors open and waiting for your entrance on Sunday mornings. Will you come? I have been absent due to illness, but I feel like something is missing because I have been out of praise and worship for a couple of weeks. Faithfulness will bring about this feeling.

During Show and Tell, Tammie Fjellstrom showed a quilt she was making with many different birds monogramed at intervals in her pattern! It was beautiful! Laila Stoevsand showed some of her art work and told about being invited to the after school art activities at the Arts Center of the Grand Prairie. They will be held after school on Mondays until school is over.

The Treasure of the Month was brought by Jim Barber and won by Tammie Fjellstrom. In the beautiful gift bag, she found a drawing CD, and art books with step by step directions.

In new business, those interested were told about new exhibits at the Historic AR Museum, including one

by Josephine Graham, celebrated Arkansas folk artist.

A Thought

Daniel “Again the Israelites did evil in the sight of The Lord, and The Lord delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.” Judges 13:1 In our continuing Sunday evening study of the book of Judges, we find a redundant cycle of behavior of a people who forget from generation to generation who they really are. They go rogue from The Lord, they get into trouble and find themselves oppressed, they cry out to The Lord to be rescued, The Lord comes to their aid by raising up a judge to lead them, there is a period of peace until the judge dies, and Israel “again” does evil in the sight of The Lord.

There are a couple of items worth noting. (1) Toward the end of the Exodus journey and prior to taking possession of the Promised Land, Moses admonished the people of Israel to teach their children from generation to generation about the bondage in Egypt and The Lord’s mighty acts in freeing them lest they forget. And remember: this practice is as much about the adults who are teaching as it is about the children who need to learn! (2) During the Exodus journey The Lord taught Israel about proper worship by giving them a particular order of worship, a liturgy to follow. Each commandment has a purpose beyond the simple establishment of what constitutes “proper” worship.

Israel would be taking possession of a strange land of strange people with strange gods and detestable worship practices, including human sacrifice. So what The Lord had been teaching His people during the journey would be important for them to learn, embrace, and teach so they remember who they are and where they came from. Both practices, corporate worship and fam-

ily devotional time, are necessary so that the people remember their place in a much broader context.

Somewhere along the way, after the death of Joshua, Israel lost sight of all this. It seems unlikely anyone remembered these practices, and they only turned to The Lord when things got tough. They took advantage of The Lord’s benevolent nature but turned away time and again once the danger passed. They neglected these simple practices and thus neglected a necessary, ongoing relationship with The Lord.

It is foolish and dangerous to believe Jesus overcame this reality and removed us from the necessity of corporate worship, study of the Scripture, and family devotional time. Each component has meaning beyond the moment even if those practices sometimes seem repetitive, even boring. We are not being “legalistic” when we adhere to a particular standard of worship; we are being faithful in trusting that we will learn more and more about The Lord so we may emulate Him to the wider world.

Israel came to believe, it seems, that simply being among the “chosen” would somehow magically protect them from all harm. In their failure to adhere to an established worship standard (doing evil and following other gods and worship practices) and teach their children as Moses had commanded, they became completely cut off from their heritage. Maybe they convinced themselves they were “too busy” or that they would get around to it later. Maybe they dropped their children off at a local synagogue and expected the religion teachers to do their thing, failing to understand the fullness of all their forebears had learned in the wilderness: that

When you hear that word, what pictures come to mind? Pirates in search of a buried chest full of gold?

Indiana Jones searching through booby-trapped pyramids? A miner finding the mother lode? Silver and gold bullion in a sunken ship?

If so, join the club—for such are the usual images that pop into our head when we hear the word “treasure.”

Interestingly, the Greek word for it is “thesauros,” which usually denotes a book of synonyms and antonyms of words. Thus, you could say it’s a book with a “wealth of words.” However, in the case of II Corinthians 4:7 it’s referring to something completely different.

Here’s what the Apostle Paul wrote in that passage: “But we have this Treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the Power may be of God and not of us.”

Without a doubt, in its context the verse is referring to Jesus Himself—for the preceding verse says “For God, Who commanded the Light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the Glory of God in the Face of Jesus Christ” (v.6).

Thus, when Jesus comes to live within one’s heart through the New Birth—which occurs when a fertile heart of Faith receives God’s “Seed” of Eternal Life planted there by the Holy Spirit (John 3:1-21; I Peter 1:23; 2:1-3)—He is truly God’s “most precious Treasure.” That’s why one of Paul’s most favorite phrases was our being “in Christ” and His being “in us.”

Because of that, we realize, as God’s Gift to us, that Jesus’ Blood is precious because it saves us from God’s Wrath and Judgment (Romans 5:9; I Pet. 1:19). Likewise, since He is God’s Living (Incarnate) Word, God’s Promises also become precious, as is “the transformation of our Faith into 24-karat status as we go through various trials” (I Pet. 1:6-7; II Pet. 1:4).

store/deposit His Treasure in “earthen vessels,” which can be translated “clay pots.” What a beautiful picture of God’s descending Grace!

Think of it: If you had a priceless, precious, peerless heirloom, would you keep it stored in a plain, clay pot—particularly if it had cracks or blemishes? Not likely.

Instead, you’d probably want a beautiful, glass-encased container so you could display it in a prominent place.

Or, you’d at least place it in a secure, safety-deposit box of some type to keep it away from “rust, rot and robbers” (Matthew 6:19-20).

But, that’s not God’s Way of doing things. No, when Jesus came to earth He “took upon Himself the form of a slave and became just like us. He willingly humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross” (Philippians 2:7-8). And, as the maddening crowd beneath the Cross looked upon Him, they didn’t see Him as God’s Treasure; they saw Him as “accursed of God” and some misguided, religious zealot (Galatians 3:13).

But, “to those who believe He is precious” (I Pet. 2:7).

God’s Most Precious Treasure.

And, thankfully, whoever embraces Him as such soon realizes He is the Gift that keeps on giving. Truly, He is freely given to whoever believes (Romans 10:9-10, 13); however, the recipient of this Gift realizes that it was purchased at a great cost—His Death on the Cross (I Corinthians 6:20; 7:23).

Here’s hoping you’ve received this Gift as your own. If so, rejoice and tell others how they can receive Him, too. If not, here’s hoping today will be the day you do.

And, as you do, you’ll realize why He is precious to you. God bless you.

it is not an either/or decision to teach at home or just “go to worship”. It is necessarily both/and – not simply because it is commanded but because every component has meaning worthy of being taught and learned again just as every commandment has meaning beyond its own words. We must never come to believe we have “outgrown” Sunday school, group Bible study, and worship. One is never “saved” enough to remove oneself from the Holy Presence and from the support of the faith community. Our children and our grandchildren learn from what we DO, not what we say.

If we are not faithful to The Lord and His established practices, we will simply make something up that seems good to us – the very curse that followed the people of Israel during the time of the Judges – and ultimately cutting ourselves off from “The Vine” from which we come (“Apart from Me you can do nothing”).

There is a third component of Israel’s failure: “each did what seemed right in his own eyes”. Some may have convinced themselves they were being faithful in their own way, but the context and the harsh lessons learned seem to indicate very clearly that their own way was in no way, shape, or form The Lord’s established way. Often we try some short cuts or add some new and trendy thing to try and convince a godless culture that we’re hip and relevant. They only see us as fools trying to be popular with them rather than being faithful to The God we claim to serve. Those earnestly seeking The Lord see through the façade.

There is much to learn from Israel’s past, much that is completely relevant to us today. We might like to convince ourselves we are much more enlightened, much more “saved” than they were; but a more careful and closer look would say we are as stiff-necked and stubborn as Israel ever thought about being. The only thing that has changed over the centuries has been technology; people are still pretty much the same.

If we are to ever find our way as a people, as The Church, we must believe everything we have been taught from the very beginning has meaning for us even these thousands of years beyond. None of it will be magically imparted; we have to reach for it, search for it, ask for it.

Only then, Jesus teaches, will we receive what we ask for. Otherwise we are turned over to ourselves and our own practices – and then we will really get exactly what we ask for!

Let us learn to ask for right things, proper things, good and fulfilling worship. And let us always remember it isn’t about “me”. It is always about The Lord, His Eternal Covenant, and His Eternal Kingdom. Believe this, and we will find our place.

The Apostle Paul Said “Follow Me” No. 3

By William Wood In other sermons we have asked the question, how many of our churches would engage the Apostle Paul for a revival meeting, should he be allowed to rise and come to DeWitt? The reason for the question is to try and show how for some of us have left Paul’s teaching, and then having been shown how many of us would be willing to get back on the word where we got off of it!

To my fellow ministers I would like to remind us all that we will each one stand before God, and give an account for the Gospel we preached!

In a very real sense we are responsible for the souls of those who sit under our ministry!

Please note, we are not responsible for who believes the word, but we are very responsible for seeking God ourselves, receiving is revelations, then presenting them to the people!

If many of you ministers would sit and talk with me, and speak the truth, you would have to say, “If I preached some of the things that Paul did, then my people would either quit church, or vote me out?

How true that is, and what a wrong reason for you not to preach the doctrines of the Bible! And this brings us to another of Paul’s teaching that hinders the right kind of preaching.

Paul said in 1st Timothy 6:120, “For the love of money is the root of all evil, which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

Are we preaching the gospel for money? If that determines the kind of gospel you preach, then you need to close your notebook and go sit under the ministry of a God called man! A God called man will quote Paul in 1st Timothy 3:3 and say, “A bishop (minister) cannot be greedy of filthy lucre (money.) What a very wrong doctrine is being preached around the nation today. It ways that the more money you have the more spiritual you are!

It is thought by many that the bigger your church house, and the larger your crowd, the more correct is the Word that is preached there. Poor, unlearned people, they don’t know that the truth being preached always thins down the crowd.

Jesus preached the truth and the Jewish church had Him killed for it!

Disciples preached the truth and they were martyred because of it. Paul came and preached the truth and the denomination he had come out of had his head cut off !

Ministers, don’t we yet understand that the truth is unpopular with the religious church world. People without The Holy Ghost flock to a church that preaches a gospel that allows their continued, worldly lifestyle!

But tell them the truth about marriage and divorce, or what the real sin was in the Garden of Eden, (It was not eating an apple) and you will have a spiritual war started!

Tell them that God has sent the prophet promised in Malachi 4:5, and that he has come and preached the same thing that Jesus and Paul preaches and you are branded as a cult.

Some have let us know that they don’t believe what Paul taught, and that causes us grief, but we know we will speak to you again about these things at White Throne Judgement! (Revelation 20: 11-15) Lord, open our eyes before we are cast into the Great Tribulation. (Matthew 24:21)

Jennings Inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi BATON ROUGE, LA-Carole Frances Jennings of DeWitt, Ark., was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Jennings was initiated at The University of Mississippi.

Four Extension Homemaker members, 4-H Program Assistant Alta Lockley, and County Extension Agent â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Family & Consumer Sciences LaTaaka Harvey from Arkansas County recently visited Arkansas Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital to share their gifts of sewing and knitting with patients. The Arkansas County Extension Homemakers (EH) groups collaborated to produce 50 teaching dolls and 147 hats for noggins. The volunteer coordinator for Volunteer Services at Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shared with the group about the changes to the facilities within the last five years. The staff member also expressed gratefulness for the donations from Arkansas County EH Clubs. The ladies were able to visit the Gift Shop

and take a group photo by a unique mural where they learned its history.

EHC members attending from Arkansas County were: Shirley Fread, Barbara Jones, Gladys Hearn, Shirley Jackson, Sandra Webb, and Alta Lockley. Arkansas County has five active EHC clubs that meet monthly meetings for educational programs and enjoy doing a number of service projects in the community. Divisions Vanish in Christ

By Pastor Steve Ellison, pastorsteve8800@gmail.com The first half of Colossians describes how Christ is preeminent in all things.  The second half gives us a test so that we can objectively measure how well we understand that Christ is first, last, and everything in between in everything. There is no need to guess if Christ is preeminent in our lives. The first question on the test, which we looked at two weeks ago, is found in Colossians 3:5-7and deals with every kind of sexual immorality. If there is sexual sin in your life, you are not in fellowship with Christ. The second question is found in Colossians 3:8, and concerns several issues related to anger. The third test question is found in Colossians 3:9-11, Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, 10 and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him â&#x20AC;&#x201D; 11 a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all. (NASU)  If we have indeed been born again, adopted into Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family, all distinctions and divisions will cease.

The passage begins with a command to stop lying to each other about the existence of divisions among them. Paul illustrates the new birth by likening it to changing clothes. It is a simple process which every person is capable of doing and understanding. Also, once it is done, it is a completed thing. Paul then goes on to say that this new birth means that all divisions in the body of Christ are artificial and arbitrary. The first example is not shocking to 21st Century Ameri-

cans but it certainly was to 1st Century Christians in Asia Minor. Saying that there was no distinction to be made between Jews and any non-Jew was as shocking a statement as Paul could have made. This division encompassed race, nationality, religious practice, and language.  In case we might miss this comprehensive example, the Holy Spirit had Paul follow it up with other examples involving religion, race, economics, status, etc. The message for us is that the person who has trusted Christ for salvation is now part of the body of Christ. All who have been adopted into Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family through faith in Christ are now brothers and sisters. No other barriers can be allowed to stand.

Once again, I remind you that if we fail this test, this is not an exhortation to try harder. Instead, it is an encouragement to run back to Christ and ask Him to show Himself to us and live through us.  If we see Christ clearly and allow Him to be preeminent in our lives, all divisions, biases, and prejudices will vanish. If we have racial prejudice in our hearts, we should see it as warning sign that we have not made Christ preeminent in our lives. If we look down on those in a lower (or higher) economic class, we can be sure that we have not seen Christ as we ought to.  While we must acknowledge that there are essential Christian doctrines that are non-negotiable, we also must acknowledge that it is wrong to despise others who have a difference of opinion in matters where the Bible has allowed for differences. We are called to be a fragrant aroma to the watching world by loving our brothers and sisters. We cannot do that if we allow divisions.

Arkansas County Quorum Court Meets

By Terrye Seamon The Arkansas County Quorum Court met at the courthouse in DeWitt April 14. The meeting focused on the Arkansas County Detention Center and proposed medical care plans for inmates.

Arkansas County Sheriff Allen Cheek presented to the court a healthcare proposal for inmates from Advanced Correctional Healthcare. The total estimated contract cost with Advanced Correctional is $103,679.38. Cheek said that the program consultant with the company, Art Rose, would be willing to attend the next meeting to speak to court members and answer any questions anyone may have.

Cheek also mentioned that he has applied for another proposal from a company in Texas, but they have not replied yet. “But I can tell you right now, it is fixing to be well over $103, 000,” Cheek told the court.

Cheek said that he is torn between whether or not the county really needs an inmate health care provider. He told the court, “As long as we are not a ‘deliberate indifference’ to any necessary health care issue, we can’t be liable.” He

did point out that the problem could get complicated in the area of dispensing and controlling inmates’ medication. “We have to dispense meds every day, and that is where we could run into a legal loophole,” Cheek said.

Arkansas County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Elizabeth Skinner explained that having an inmate healthcare provider would allow the jail to have a qualified medical person present to make medical decisions. “We are trying to make sure that we were covered legally and not putting our jailers in a position where they were being asked to make medical calls,” Skinner said.

In conjunction with the healthcare topic, Cheek suggested possibly dropping the insurance at some point in the future because the Medicaid/Medicare programs have now started paying for claims. He also cited other jails in Arkansas who no longer carry insurance.

“I don’t think we need it. That could be a savings right there,” Cheek said. “As long as we are not a ‘deliberate indifference’ and make sure they get the necessary healthcare, hygiene, food and

religious stuff, then we are fine,” Cheek said.

Concerning the issue of Medicaid/ Medicare paying for claims, Skinner said, “We don’t ever know if or when they will begin to deny us claims again, but as was stated, just because you are an inmate and go to the doctor, it doesn’t mean it is the county’s responsibility to pay those bills.”

As far as the county dropping insurance, Skinner commented, “I don’t necessarily think we need to cancel the insurance this month, but I do think that it is a discussion worth having when it is time to renew.” She said the extended time would provide the county with more information to review and take into consideration when making a decision in the future about whether the insurance policy needs to be renewed.

Cheek told court members that he would continue to research other inmate healthcare provider proposals and report his findings to the court.

He informed the court that there was really no way of knowing an exact cost of a healthcare plan due to a variety of

factors, such as the number of inmates incarcerated at a particular time and the specific care required by those individuals.

In addition to inmate medical care proposals and insurance, Cheek also reported to the court that the jail is currently housing 77 adults in the adult jail and 9 juveniles in the juvenile detention center. “Right now we only have 77 in the adult jail, but we got right up to 100 this month, and luckily it has dwindled back down,” Cheek said. He also reported, due to the amount of rain the county has experienced in the last month, the work crew was not able to do any work.

In other business, the court considered and passed several appropriation ordinances such as a $4,200 Mini JAG Grant, an insurance reimbursement in the amount of $1,992.22 for damage done to a vehicle during a criminal pursuit, and to use funds from the ½ cent sales tax budget to purchase a used road grader for the county.

The donation will help the organization support various community programs, including the Gillett Back Pack Program, the Gillett Food Pantry, Gillett ABC Preschool and Dana’s House.

“I chose the Civic Group to receive the donation because of all the good they do for the community,” said Cover.

“They keep the food pantry stocked and supply backpacks for kids in our community. It’s a great organization.”

2015 Rice Expo Recipe Contest Renders Rice a Blank Canvas for the Culinarily Creative WYNNE, Ark. -- Think of that rice in your pantry as a blank canvas on which to create a dish that could win the 2015 Arkansas Rice Expo Recipe Contest.

“This contest is an opportunity to show off your kitchen creativity and showcase a grain that’s a staple worldwide,” said Dianna Bowen, Lonoke County extension agent for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. Bowen chairs the rice contest committee for the Cooperative Extension Service.

The deadline for receipt of entries is June 12 and winners of the preliminary round will be notified by July 1.

The fourth annual contest will be held Friday, Aug. 7, in conjunction with the Arkansas Rice Expo at the Grand Prairie Center in Stuttgart.

In addition to showing off the versatility and benefits of rice, the contest is also meant to encourage safe food handling skills, advance cooking skills and showcase rice growing in Arkansas -which is the nation’s No. 1 rice grower, Bowen said.

How to enter Rice in any form must be the prominent ingredient in the recipe and ingredients should be easily obtained in any local grocery store.

Each contestant should submit a completed electronic entry form, and elec-

tronic copy of their recipe as well as a hard copy of the entry form and three copies of 8.5 x11 inches, typed recipe for the judges. The recipe should be in standard format including the ingredients with measurements in order of use, followed by step-by-step preparation and cooking methods.

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s golfers Lauren Johnson and Frida Rydberg have been selected to the 2014-15 AllGreat American Conference team.

Johnson earned All-GAC second team honors, while Rydberg made the All-GAC honorable mention team. This is the first season UAM has had multiple all-conference selections in women’s golf.

Johnson, a sophomore from Dewitt, Arkansas, recently capped her third season as a Blossom by finishing seventh out of 46 at the GAC Championship Tournament with three of her lowest rounds of the season.

She finished the year with a stroke average of 80.2 per 18 holes in a total of 20 rounds. Out of 10 events, she posted six top 10 finishes, two first place finishes and

a total of 12 rounds with a score of below 80.

Johnson was recently selected as one of three finalists for UAM’s Female Athlete of the Year award to be presented Monday night at the annual UAM StudentAthlete Banquet. She also made this week’s NCAA regional rankings as the No. 6 golfer for individuals not associated with a ranked team.

Rydberg, a true freshman from Jarfalla, Sweden, was UAM’s second-best women’s golfer this year behind Johnson with a stroke average of 83.2 per 18 holes with a total of 20 rounds.

Out of 10 events, she posted five top 20 finishes and three top 10 finishes. She carded her best score of 77 in the second round of the Buccaneer Classic during the fall portion of the schedule to finish second out of 34.

DeWitt Middle School eighth graders went on a field trip April 15 to Parkin Archeological State Park in Parkin, Arkansas. According to a brochure published by the Arkansas State Parks in conjunction with the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism, the park was believed to be the site of the Indian village of Casqui and visited by Hernando deSoto in 1541. The purpose of the park now is to preserve and research the historical and archeological remnants of the American Indian culture during the AD 1200-1600 time period.

Students were divided into four groups and rotated between several different informative sessions led by park interpreters in the areas of Native American jewelry making and ancient weaponry and defense tactics employed by Indians and Europeans. They also toured the Indian village and visited an Indian mound that was located on the site.

The field trip was sponsored by Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP). Diana Graves, director of public school

relations at PCCUA DeWitt and the current GEAR UP liaison for DeWitt Public Schools said, “We want to give students the opportunity to see different career and educational choices and options.”

Sissy Odaware, GEAR UP site coordinator for the DeWitt School District said that GEAR UP has also sponsored field trips to the Museum of Discovery for sixth-graders and the Clinton Library for the seventh-graders this spring semester.

Other projects the program has sponsored include a parent night, summer camp programs, and after school tutoring and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs. Odaware also noted that DMS has received technology, such as Chrome books and iPads, through GEAR UP grants for students to use in the classroom.

“It is a great program that benefits our kids. We really appreciate having the opportunity to work with PCCUA and the GEAR UP Program to help further the educations of our students,” Odaware said.

Park Visitor from Arkansas Finds 3.69-carat White, Teardrop-shaped Diamond at Arkansas’s Crater of Diamonds State Park

Finder Susie Clark Names her stone the Hallelujah Diamond after her prayer for a diamond find was answered

(MURFREESBORO, Ark.)– Susie Clark of Evening Shade (Sharp County), Arkansas, first visited the Crater of Diamonds State Park, Arkansas’s diamond site, 33 years ago with her mother and grandmother from Germany. A return visit with her husband over the past week was highlighted on Clark’s last day of diamond hunting yesterday (Thursday, April 23) by a beautiful, 3.69-carat white diamond that she found near the South Washing Pavilion of the park’s 37 ½-acre search field. According to Clark, she found the gem on the surface of the field yesterday afternoon after she asked God, “Are you going to bless me and let me find a diamond today?” Shortly after her prayer, Clark saw the diamond sticking out of a furrow ridge in the plowed dirt. She knew it was a diamond, and said to herself, “This is a diamond. And it’s a big one!”

Because Clark found the diamond after saying that prayer on her last day of searching at the park, she named her teardrop-shaped gem the Hallelujah Diamond. At this time, she plans to keep her gem.

According to Park Interpreter Waymon Cox, the large

diamond is about the size of pinto bean. “The gem is frosted white with a pearlescent, metallic shine. This is the largest diamond found so far this year. And it’s the largest one found since April 16, 2014, when a 6.19-carat white diamond, named the Limitless Diamond, was found at the park,” he said. Cox continued, “Mrs. Clark’s diamond is the 122nd diamond found at the park this year.”

Cox noted that the park has experienced a lot of rain over the past couple of weeks, plus the park maintenance staff plowed the search field—the eroded surface of an ancient, diamond-bearing deposit— earlier this week. “This regular endeavor loosens the diamond-bearing soil which, along with rain erosion, brings more diamonds to the surface and helps park visitors’ chances of finding them. With all the rain we’ve been seeing, along with this week’s plowing, there’s a good chance more diamonds will be found on the surface in the days to come.”

He stressed that conditions on the search field are perfect right now for finding diamonds on the surface of the field. “Diamonds are a bit heavy for their size, and they lack static electricity, so rainfall slides the dirt off diamonds that are on the surface of the search area leaving them exposed. And when the sun comes out, they’ll sparkle and be noticed.”

The search area at the Crater of Diamonds is a 37 ½-acre plowed field that is the eroded surface of the eighth largest diamond-bearing deposit in the world, in surface area. It is the world’s only diamond-producing site open to the public. The park’s policy is finder-keepers. What park visitors find is theirs to keep. The park staff provides free identification and registration of diamonds. Park interpretive programs and exhibits explain the site’s geology and history, and offer tips on recognizing diamonds in the rough.

In total, over 75,000 diamonds have been unearthed at Arkansas’s diamond site since the first diamonds found in 1906 by John Huddleston, the farmer who at that time owned the land, long before the site became an Arkansas state park in 1972. The largest diamond ever discovered in the U.S. was unearthed here in 1924 during an early mining operation. Named the Uncle Sam, this white diamond with a pink cast weighed 40.23 carats. Notable diamonds found by park visitors since the state park was established at the site include the Amarillo Starlight, a 16.37-carat white diamond discovered in 1975 which ranks as the largest diamond ever found by a park visitor. In 2011, a visitor from Colorado found an 8.66-carat white

diamond she named the Illusion Diamond, which is the third-largest gem registered here since the Crater of Diamonds State Park was established in 1972.

Discovered in 1990 by Shirley Strawn of Murfreesboro, this white gem weighed 3.03 carats in the rough before being cut to perfection in 1997 by the renowned diamond firm Lazare Kaplan International of New York. The gem is the most perfect diamond ever certified in the laboratory of the American Gem Society. It is on display in a special exhibit in the Crater of Diamonds State Park visitor center.

Another gem from the Crater of Diamonds is the flawless 4.25-carat Kahn Canary diamond that was discovered in 1977. This uncut, triangular-shape gem has been on exhibit at many cities around the U.S. and overseas. It was featured in an illustrious jewelry exhibition in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1997 that included precious stones from throughout the world including the Kremlin collection, the Vatican, Cartier, and Christies. In late 1997, the Kahn Canary was featured in another prestigious exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History in New York entitled “The Nature of Diamonds.” Former First Lady Hillary Clinton borrowed the Kahn Canary from its owner, Stan Kahn of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and wore it in a special, Arkansas-inspired ring setting designed by Henry Dunay of New York as a special way to represent Arkansas’s diamond site at the galas celebrating both of Bill Clinton’s presidential inaugurals.

Over 40 different rocks and minerals are unearthed at the Crater making it a rockhound’s delight. In addition to diamonds, semi-precious gems and minerals, including amethyst, garnet, peridot, jasper, agate, calcite, barite, and quartz, are found in the park’s search area.

Crater of Diamonds State Park is on Ark. 301 at Murfreesboro. It is one of the 52 state parks administered by the State Parks Division of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism.
