Blood Drive Collects 32 Units Atalpal II sponsored an American Red Cross blood drive at the La Plata Christian Church , on March 4, 2013, from 1 - 3 P.M. The goal was 40 units, and 36 people presented, including two first time donors, and 32 good units were collected. This represented a tremendous effort of the people of La Plata, because of the bad roads and winter illnesses. Lion members Gary Smith and Marvin Seidt unloaded the Red Cross truck on arrival, then reloaded it at the end. Atalpal members Jean Elliott, Sharron Burns, Mary Plumlee, Jerry Prather, Shirley Smith, Blanche Meeks, Peggy Loe, Paula Thompson, Jean Bruce, Carol Hays, and Becky Mohan, either assisted in the canteen, or provided food. The Red Cross was very grateful for the turnout, as they have missed recent drives because of the weather, and people are still in need. Ninetysix people will be helped by your generosity.

Monday night, March 4, 2013 as the sun set and winter darkness rolled in, members of The American Legion Green Hills Post 57 conducted a flag retirement ceremony in front of the Bucklin Legion Hall. Wayne Kitchen-Post 57 Sergeant at Arms stated, “When the United States flag becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it is time to replace it with a new flag, and the old flag should be “retired” with all the dignity and respect befitting our nation’s flag. The traditional method of retirement is to incinerate the flag.“ Legion officers first inspect the flags, Colors are posted, the Post Chaplain provides a prayer, and the bugler sounds “To the Colors.” Post 57 retired over one hundred flags and then finished the ceremony with bugler Charles Hughes playing Taps.
