PHOTO LEFT TO RIGHT: Charles Hughes provides taps at the military rites for World War Two Navy Veteran Louis Pyle at the Elmer, Missouri cemetery, May 19, 2012. United States Navy OSC Bruce Davis, Green Hills Post 57 Bugler Charles Hughes, and United States Navy OSC Edward DeLaFuente.
Charles Hughes started his musical heritage in the 1940’s while attending the Bucklin, Missouri grade school. Playing the baritone and trumpet he kept up this talent and still plays at Bucklin occasions and military veteran’s events. Hughes graduated from Bucklin High School in 1949 and worked for the railroad; ending up in Chicago in 1951. Charles liked the
city and found employment with United Airlines as a ground handler -- continuing with the job until retiring in 1986. Charles and wife Patsy returned to Bucklin, after his retirement, and neither have stopped participating in community events. Call his home number and his answering machine plays a trumpet solo, compliments of Charles. Attend the annual Methodist
Church Valentine night and Charles will be serenading the couples, with trumpet music. Hughes joined the Bucklin Sons of the American Legion and is ready, at short notice, to play taps at the numerous military rites and drills the Post 57 American Legion performs in.
