BEVIER STUDENT OF THE WEEK RACHEL LOWE

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

Leaving It All Behind Caleb Pagett Compton, son of Richard and Sarah Compton of Callao, MO, and a 2004 graduate of Bevier High School is an extrodanary young man. Caleb chose to leave Missouri and go where he can make a difference in young lives throughout the world. On Feb 1st, 2012 he began a journey to the Philippines. We will take a front row seat into Caleb’s experiences through his own words. The dirty white walls of the Copacabana hotel are towering around me as I sit under the green cabana near the pool. The sound of cars, buses, jeepneys, and children jumping into the pool are ringing in my ears. The moist air is filling my lungs as I take deep breaths reflecting on these past days and even months. On Feb 1st, 2012 I began a journey that God sent me on to Infanta Pangasinan, Philippines. In the weeks preparing for the trip, I was completely at peace knowing that this is what God had for me. I believe I was feeling every emotion possible; from being happy, joyful, excited, to sad, lonely, overwhelmed, and mad. But in spite of it all I knew God had not called me to be comfortable, but instead to be obedient to Him because He knows what’s best for me. Leading up to the day of departure, it wasn’t bad. I had gone back home to visit family at the beginning of the month. It was a great time and saying goodbye didn’t really feel much different than any other time I left. Then just two weeks before my departure I was leaving my job. That wasn’t too bad either. It was definitely sad and I am already missing the people I worked with, but I don’t think all of it was a reality still at that point. A week later I was celebrating a friends wedding. A going

away party was thrown at my friend Michael’s house and I said a lot of good byes. Finally, the night before the departure to the Philippines we had one last party, and even that was not bad. I stayed the night at my buddy Kellen’s house with him and our friend Mike. We got up early and headed to the airport around 5:50am. I checked in and was just

sitting down quietly, not really saying much. Finally all of us were checked in and it was time to go through security and say the last good byes. I’ve watched people leave before, but you never quite feel the effects of it like you do when you’re the one leaving everyone else behind. April, Jimmy and I are on our longest flight from Seattle to Seoul, South Korea. We

have officially departed the USA and going to spend the next months or possibly years in a foreign country. After having the first meal during our flight, I laid across the seats and went to sleep. Suddenly I woke up from something wet running down my face. At first I thought I was drooling! See story on Page 2A
