LOCAL NEWS O’Dell to Wed Birdsong Light Up the Holidays Christmas Decorating Contest

Mischell O’Dell of DeWitt and David O’Dell of England announce the engagement and forthcoming wedding of their daughter Bailey Nicole O’Dell, to Brandon Dwayne Birdsong, son of Michael Birdsong of Little Rock and Kimberly Rodgers of North Little Rock. The wedding will be November 16, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of DeWitt. All family and friend are invited to attend; no invitations will be sent. She is registered at Dillards and the Registry.

Halloween Fun at DB&T

The Dewitt City Hall is sponsoring a Christmas light decorating contest for the residents of the City of DeWitt to encouraging people to decorate their homes during the upcoming Christmas season in preparation of the many visitors coming to DeWitt for the Arkansas County Bicentennial Celebration which will be held December 14th at the Southern District Courthouse on DeWitt Court Square 9:00 am – 4:00 p.m.  Deadline to enter the contest is set for December 10th.  There is an entry fee of $5.00 which may be paid at the City Hall or mailed to: DeWitt City Hall, % Light Up the Holidays Decorating Contest, 120 Court Square, DeWitt, AR 72042. Winners will be announced December 14th during the county’s Bicentennial Celebration on the Square. For more information contact the DeWitt City Clerk. All net proceeds will be donated to Barbara’s Toy Drive and Community Food Bank. The DeWitt Chamber of

Commerce will officially turn on their lighting display of the DeWitt Courthouse lawn along with the local merchants on November 22 at 5:00 p.m. for DeWitt Merchants Open Houses on November 23 – 24.  Beginning the 2014 Holiday season the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce will add to its current court house lawn decorations memorial displays. This special area will be named “Memorial Laneâ€? and will be located on the east side of the courthouse lawn on the Square. Individuals may make monetary donations of $250.00 or more in memory of loved ones. These funds will be used to purchased additional commercial grade themed light displays for “Memorial Laneâ€?. Acknowledgement signs will be set with the memorial displays annually. Donations less than $250.00 may be made and will be acknowledged by the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce at the beginning of each holiday season in the pa-

Jean Pollard, Violet Kraft and Dorothy Wilks The Eighty-sixth National Conference of The National Society Dames of the Court of Honor met at the Wyndham Hotel, Irvine, California, September 19-22, 2013. Attending from the Arkansas Society, DCH, were Jean Pollard, Vice President, and Dorothy Wilks, State Chaplain. Violet Kraft, President General, presided. Approximately seventy attended from thirty-four chapters across the Nation. Friday morning annual reports were heard from National Officers, National Chairmen of Committees, National Trustees, State Presidents and/or Vice Presidents. Pollard gave the Arkansas Annual Report from Peggy Vandenberg, State President, who was unable to attend. Pollard got to add to the Arkansas Report that Betty Harp State Registrar had mailed in eight new applications. This will increase Arkansas’ membership to 23. Membership of the National Society is over 1200. Speaker at the noon luncheon on Friday was Dr. Bill Mallet who is

retired from the Chemistry Field. He has been a docent at the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum for sixteen years. He presented slides of various features at the Library/Museum. Friday Evening’s Banquet theme was “Patriot�, dealing with the Gold Rush. Speaker on Friday evening was author Craig MacDonald. His talk was titled,�Gold Rush Glimpses, True Stories with a Twist�. He was very informative and humorous. Decorations carried out the Gold theme. Saturday was Fun Day and forty took the bus tour to Nixon’s Presidential Library/Museum, followed by Knotts Berry Farm famous Fried Chicken Lunch. There are thirteen Presidential Libraries in the system. Nixon’s is located in Yorba Linda and is the site of his birthplace. Nixon and his wife are buried there. A celebration of Nixon’s 100th birthday is continuing throughout 2013. The room of World Leaders, with life-size sculptures was most interesting. Nixon’s climb up the po-

litical ladder is carried throughout the exhibits. There were rooms concerning international Affairs, a Section of the Berlin Wall, First Lady, Pat�, whose real name was Thelma, Domestic Affairs section, 1973 the Watergate Exhibit. Saturday night’s Banquet carried the Hollywood Theme. Small “Oscar� statues were at each place. The processional was through a cordoned area with a “red carpet�. Speaker was E. J. Stephens, assisted by his wife Kimmie. They work at Warners Brothers and Stephens spoke mainly of Frank Sinatra, He did say that Warner Brothers was started by four poor Jewish immigrants from Europe in 1907. Rin Tin Tin, the dog, started performing in 1924 and helped them to success. Warner Brothers was the first to bring on sound to the movies. The slide presentation was very interesting. The title was “Stars and Studios: An Early Look at Paramount and Warner Brothers.� The final Business Meeting was on Sunday with a Memorial Service. Mary Jane Stallworth, South Carolina State President, invited the members of the Dames of the Court of Honor to the 2014 National Conference, September 21-24, 2014 in Columbia, South Carolina. The 2013-2015 National Officers were installed. President General is Linda Rice. MarJo Dill of Pine Bluff, Arkansas was elected a National Trustee, 2013-2015. Chairman of the Nominating Committee was Christie Noble of Iowa. Pollard and Wilks stayed at the home of Pollard’s nephew and wife, Scott and Wendy Sanders, in Huntington Beach, and visited with Pollard’s neice, Holly Hubbard in Costa Mesa.
