The Tulip Garden Project strives to protect victims of abuse Lamar native Amanda Martin is in the beginning steps of setting up a shelter for battered women in Barton County. The Tulip Gardner Project began with the hope of bringing awareness to domestic violence and anyone wishing to contact her regarding the project may do so by calling 417-660-9654 or visiting The Tulip Garden Project on facebook. According to Martin, being in love can be one of the most joyful experiences in the world. Everything seems to perfect and easy, then one day reality sets in. The person you love so much hurts you, degrades you and controls you. This can put a person in a state of mind like no other, according to Martin, who has been in an abusive relationship. She goes on to say how one cries in private, praying it doesn't happen anymore. Victims of domestic violence hide from the world and become detached, irritable and may even abuse drugs and alcohol. Martin said, “This is why I call domestic violence a 'silent killer'”. The victim keeps quiet and rarely tells anyone about their abuse. In 2012, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, there were 76 instances of domestic violence related homicides in Missouri, of which 38 cases, or 50 percent, were due to intimate partner violence. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2014, each see ABUSE, page 3A
