METZGER’S MUTTERINGS

The Lamar Democrat has been extremely busy lately due to special sections including the fall sports preview, the 4-H tab, Lamar's homecoming and soon to be published, the 2013 Lamar Free Fair Memory Book. Melissa and myself have been busy selling ads for these special sections and I would like to take this time to thank one and all

for their contributions. We are still attempting to better the newspaper, and each of you with your positive comments mean so much and encourage us to keep plugging along! Now we are asking for your help once again. When I first came to work at the Democrat in 1984, Opal was responsible for a very popular monthly feature called Sim's Simmerings. Following this, Judy Probert wrote Cook of the Month. These arti-

cles would feature various cooks in the area, as well as several of their recipes. As well as this weekly feature, we would publish a yearly holiday cookbook around Thanksgiving time. Many of our faithful readers will remember, and several were contributors to the cookbook. This is where we are asking for your help. We would like to reestablish the holiday cookbook and need help from individuals, as well as companies that would like to advertise. We need to get started ASAP, as the holidays will be here before we know it. If anyone knows of someone that would be a good feature cook, we would appreciate you letting us know.

Just call me, Melody, at 417-682-5529, ext. 60 or e-mail melodymetzger@ lamardemocrat.com. Of course we also would desperately need recipes from our subscribers. They could be brought to the office at 100 E. 11th St., Lamar, e-mailed to info@lamardemocrat. com or mailed to P.O. Box 458, Lamar, Mo. 64759. ++++++++++ On another note....my Cardinals are down 2-1 in their playoff series and by the time this column comes out we will likely know whether they are advancing or Pittsburgh is. One of the owners of the paper is a huge Pittsburgh fan, so we have had fun going back and forth during the series

Lamar Parents as Teachers to host reading program Lamar Parents as Teachers are will host a program on Tuesdays, Oct. 15 and 22 that has been praised across the state – Read from the Start. This is for parents of young children. Presented by the Missouri Humanities Council, Read from the Start is based on the conviction that parents are a child's first and most important teacher and that the love of books and stories begins very early in a child’s life. The energetic and interactive two-session program explores seven great children’s books and many reading techniques that parents

can use to engage their young children. The parent only evening uncovers the wonderful world of books and stories through reading, singing, acting, games, crafts and more. At the conclusion of Read from the Start, parents take home the seven titles they have explored during the program for free. Organizations across Missouri have called Read from the Start innovative, valuable and transformational. “The families were totally engaged in the RFTS program. I heard families speak about how much they had learned. They

were very excited about RFTS.” - Early Head Start, Sedalia; “The facilitator’s presentation was excellent! Teens were genuinely interested in the educational and entertaining aspects of this program.” - Truman Medical Center Start Right Teen Program, Kansas City; “This was a great experience for the teens. It was a joy for me to watch the interaction of the teens with the facilitator. It appeared that they were learning a lot on how to read to their babies. They were also very excited to get the books. Obviously they would never be able to afford such a library on

their own at this point in their lives.” - Parents as Teachers/Manual Career & Technical Center. “Parents love the interactivity, especially being read to by someone.” Ferguson-Florissant Parents as Teachers, Ferguson; “Parents love the laughter and animation of the presenter and like to share their own experiences.” – Rosebud Head Start, Rosebud. and I’ll forgive him even if he is a little misguided. While watching the game Sunday Gary and myself were diligently channeling back and forth between the St. Louis Cardinal game and the Dallas Cowboys playing Denver Broncos and powerhouse Peyton Manning. It was a great game, with the scoring going back and forth, only for the Cowboys to lose with just a couple of seconds left. Alas! ++++++++++ We were supposed to be in Joplin shopping this weekend for wedding clothes for Gary and myself since Jud and Meghan's wedding is less than two weeks away; however, my car died yesterday and it will be Mon-

day before it even gets looked at. Mind you, we were going to start three weeks ago, and then Jud had to have surgery Sunday morning, Sept. 22; the next Sunday I had to stay with him and Landon as Jud wasn't functioning at full force and this week we were definitely going to go. Didn't happen! Good thing I’m a procrastinator or else I’d be fit to be tied. Just goes with the territory. ++++++++++ Here is a little ditty I saw in the Joplin Globe several months ago and cut out because I really liked what it had to say… Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held it's ground...David Icke, English athlete
