A.T. Still Inducted to Hall of Fame
Glen Mitts Anabel, MO 6th Annual Winter Flea Market & Soup Luncheon On Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, the
Friends For La Plata Preservation will sponsor their annual flea market and soup luncheon. Again this year, the event will be held in the Silver Rails Event Center at 204 East Moore St. in La Plata. The event opens at 8:00 a.m. and will continue until 3:00 p.m. The show will feature over 30 booths, and admission is free for all shoppers. The FLPP members will operate a concession stand featuring homemade vegetable soup, sandwiches and cookies, throughout the day. The Friends For La Plata Preservation will use the proceeds from this Flea Market to continue renovations on the Green Theatre and Annex. The Friends For La Plata Preservation historic group was founded in 1996, in order to preserve the rich history of the La Plata area. Many fundraisers have been held over the years to fund community projects. Besides the current Green Theatre and Annex renovation; the complete Santa Fe Depot restoration of 2003, was spearheaded by FLPP. Through the efforts of the group, the “La Plata Square Historic District” was included on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Nate Walker, Missouri 3rd District State Representative in recognition of Andrew Taylor Still, MD, DO, recently being selected for induction into the Hall of Famous Missourians presented Missouri House of Representatives Speaker Tim Jones with a copy of “A.T. Still: From the Dry Bone to the living Man” at the State Capitol in Jefferson City. The A.T. Still book was authored by John Robert Lewis. The Hall is a collection of bronze busts that generally has honored people chosen by the House Speaker, but this year House Speaker Tim Jones opened the process to the people of Missouri. Dr. Still, the founder of American Osteopathy, received the most support in a public nominating and voting process for this honor. He came in with nearly 38 percent of more than 34,000 votes. Science fiction author Robert Heinlein, came in second place, and will also be inducted, along with Jones’ choices of Virginia Minor, who advocated for women’s voting rights, and Mel Hancock, author of a state constitutional amendment approved in 1980 that has become known simply as the “Hancock Amendment.” Rep. Walker commented, “I am very appreciative of the leadership that Speaker Tim Jones has shown in opening up the selection process for the Hall of Famous Missourians.”
Walker continues “Missourians have long recognized the important contributions to medical healing that Dr. A. T. Still has contributed, now he rightfully will be recognized in the Hall of Famous Missourians”. An official induction ceremony will held later this year. For additional information you may contact Rep. Walker at his MO State Capitol office by e-mail nate.walker@house.mo.gov and by telephone (573) 751-3647.

On January 6, 2014, MoDOT crews continued to work to keep the blowing and drifting snow plowed back off the roadways. All roads in Northeast MO had been plowed several times, but snow continued to blow and drift. Here are just a few photos of the road conditions from January 6 and just of few of the people who worked hard to keep the roads plowed. While MoDOT Northeast District would like to thank you for giving the snowplows and other equipment plenty of room to safely work, the public would like to thank you to all those who worked so hard to keep our roads safe!
