December can be a month of mixed emotions joy, excitement, pressure, nostalgia, sadness, or even loneliness. Remember that it’s okay to feel more than one thing at a time. This month, give yourself permission to slow down, breathe, and care for your mental health in ways that feel supportive and realistic.
Make space for rest. You don’t need to say yes to every event or request. Choose what feels meaningful and let the rest go.

Set boundaries with kindness. It’s perfectly healthy to limit your time, energy, or spending. Clear communication helps protect your wellbeing.
Find your winter mood boosters. Try morning sunlight, cozy blankets, warm drinks, upbeat music, or short walks to counter winter sluggishness. Seasonal affect disorder is a real thing. Please monitor and make sure you are kind and patient with yourself.
The holidays can bring stress from family dynamics, expectations, or financial strain. Consider these grounding strategies:
Take 5 slow breaths before reacting in tense moments
Step outside for a few minutes during overwhelming gatherings
Gift within your means thoughtful doesn’t have to mean expensive
Remember you’re not alone; many people find this season challenging
Here are a few gentle questions to help you close out the year with intention:
What is one thing I’m proud of from this year?
What challenged me, and how did I grow?
What brought me joy or peace?
What habits or stressors do I want to leave in 2025? What do I want more of in the new year?
The holiday season can be a joyful time filled with celebration, connection, and reflection. It can also bring added stress, busy schedules, and challenges to maintaining our regular routines. December is an important moment to pause, check in with ourselves, and set healthy intentions as we close out the year.

The combination of colder weather, social gatherings, and year-end responsibilities can make it harder to prioritize our well-being. Being mindful of simple habits can help keep us grounded and balanced. Staying hydrated, choosing nourishing foods when possible, getting adequate rest, and incorporating small moments of movement throughout the day all support energy and mood during this busy time. Even a short walk, a five-minute stretch break, or stepping outside for fresh air can make a noticeable difference.
Emotional wellness also matters this time of year. The holidays can bring a mix of feelings, and it’s important to give yourself space to acknowledge them. Connecting with friends, talking to someone you trust, or taking a few quiet minutes for yourself can help reduce stress and support mental wellbeing. Practicing gratitude, whether by journaling or simply reflecting on one positive moment each day, can also build resilience.
As we move through December and prepare for the new year, let’s take care of ourselves the same way we encourage our patients to care for their health. Small, steady habits now can set the foundation for a strong and healthy start to the year ahead. Caring for our community begins with caring for ourselves, and every intentional step supports a healthier workplace and a healthier you.
