Brightening Our Pathways

National Diabetes Awareness Month

Lifestyle changes can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease. Prevention is especially important if you're currently at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes because of excess weight or obesity, high cholesterol, or a family history of diabetes. Making a few changes in your lifestyle now may help you avoid the serious health complications of diabetes in the future, such as nerve, kidney and heart damage. It's never too late to start.

Diabetes Awareness: Understanding, Preventing, and Managing Diabetes

Diabetes affects millions of Americans and impacts people of all ages As we recognize National Diabetes Awareness Month, it's essential to understand the seriousness of this condition, learn ways to reduce risks, and share tips for those living with or at risk of diabetes

Diabetes in the United States: The Numbers

1 in 10 adults in the U.S. has diabetes.

1 in 3 adults has prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar levels are elevated but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

86 million Americans have prediabetes, and 9 out of 10 don’t even know they have it.

Diabetes increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, blindness, and kidney disease, contributing significantly to national healthcare costs.

Risk Factors for Diabetes

Certain lifestyle factors and health conditions can increase the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, including:

Overweight and obesity

High blood pressure or cholesterol

Sedentary lifestyle

Family history of diabetes

Age 45 and older

Know the Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes

Being aware of diabetes symptoms is essential to prompt intervention. Look out for:

Increased thirst and hunger

Frequent urination

Fatigue

Blurred vision

Unintended weight loss

Prevention Tips: Steps to Lower Your Risk

While some risk factors, like genetics or age, can’t be controlled, lifestyle changes can greatly reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes

Eat a Balanced Diet: Include whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of fruits and vegetables in your meals. Try to limit sugary drinks and refined carbs.

Stay Active: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming.

Maintain a Healthy Weight: Keeping a healthy weight can reduce the likelihood of developing insulin resistance.

Limit Alcohol and Quit Smoking: Both smoking and excessive drinking can contribute to diabetes risk

Regular Check-Ups: Annual screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose levels help catch signs of prediabetes or diabetes early

Taking Action

Taking control of your health begins with awareness. This National Diabetes Awareness Month, consider talking to your healthcare provider about your risk for diabetes. If you’re due for a check-up or have concerns about your blood sugar, make it a priority to get screened.

Prevention and management are key to healthy living with diabetes Together, through awareness, action, and education, we can work toward healthier lives for all
