February Recap

February was a fun and eventful month for us at TAPM! We kicked things off with Jersey Day to show our team spirit before the Super Bowl, and we got festive for Valentine’s Day, dressing up and enjoying sweet treats from the EEC’s candy fundraiser.

We also took time to bring awareness to American Heart Month, highlighting the importance of heart health. Nykedtra Brown, FNP, and Medical Assistant Apprentice, Julianna Cruz, teamed up to create a video demonstrating the proper way to take blood pressure an important skill that helps us provide the best care for our patients.

As we move into March, let’s keep up the great energy and continue making an impact together!

Why We Love What We Do

The reason why I love what I do is because it has always been in me to take care of other people. I feel that has been my calling from God. If I can’t do something to make a person’s day better, then my living has been in vain. I don’t care what ethnicity, gender, or background you have, I want to show the same level of kindness, love, & compassion to whomever I’m caring for. I live by the Golden Rule: Do unto others as You’d have them to do unto you. I live to see my patient’s smile.

I love what I do because I get to laugh and smile every day. Kids are so funny and fun to work with!

I love being a CMA but most of all I love being Lead Vaccine Coordinator for TAPM. I am passionate about vaccines, vaccine training, learning more about vaccines so I can help hopefully break the vaccine hesitancy in our communities and to encourage staff to encourage vaccines to our patients. I love working with our patient population. A population that is forgotten and neglected by the most communities and government. Our population is important and they deserve to have the best care just like anyone else.

What I love most about my role at TAPM is the supportive and collaborative environment. I work alongside an amazing team that truly cares about our patients and each other. It makes coming to work every day fulfilling, knowing we are all working toward the same goal providing the best care possible.

Why We Love What We Do

My name is Renee Morris, LPN, and I love what I do because I was raised in a family of nurses and law enforcement officers. Nurturing and service work is in my DNA. Service work has been a part of my life since I was a young girl. I used to go to work with my mother and grandmother who did in-home nursing for many years. I'd assist by helping with the patients they took care of. Tidying their homes by sweeping floors or helping with folding clothes were some of the small tasks that I took on without having been asked. Sometimes the patients would let me play with their hair and style it for them. I never saw it as work, to me, I was having fun. It gave me joy to do something for someone else and see their appreciation for it. My passion to help others grew throughout my life and even when I'm not caring for people at work, I find myself caring for strangers in various ways. I welcomed homeless people off the street to my home to eat and bathe. Some I washed their clothes and others, I gave clothes to.

Once, I met a young man who was homeless that needed help with finding a job by taking him to the Social Security office to get a Social Security card and identification. That young man got the job and was saving his money to get his own place while living at a local shelter. He was a good person with no family nearby that was willing to help him. I gave him temporary shelter and fell in love with his kindness and his heart. I later married that man and we added 3 more children and one adopted child to the marriage. We were a family of six and very happy. We were married for 25yrs until his sudden death in 2017. He would always say that I saved him, Little does he know, he saved me. I learned from him my self-confidence to push myself beyond what I could ever imagine. I learned to be brave and not afraid to fail if at first things did not work out the first time. From him, I discovered me. I later went on to college to become a nurse, graduating in the top three of my class. He was my biggest fan.

Caring for people comes from God. How can one say that they love God and not HIS people. It is my gift, and I use it the way that I believe God wants me too. My life has been blessed because of my love and compassion for people and the gift that they give me is when I see them smile and say thank you. Caring for people is not a skill one can learn in college or by trade. Its a gift from God.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing awareness about one of the most preventable, yet deadly, cancers. Colorectal cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S., but with routine screening, it is also one of the most treatable. Early detection through screenings like colonoscopies and stool-based tests can help find precancerous polyps before they develop into cancer, significantly improving outcomes.

Experts recommend that individuals at average risk begin screening at age 45, though those with a family history or other risk factors may need to start earlier. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, avoiding tobacco, and limiting alcohol can also help reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer.

This month, take a proactive step toward your health by talking with your provider about colorectal cancer screening. Early detection saves lives, and staying informed is key to prevention. If you or a loved one is due for a screening, now is the time to schedule an appointment and prioritize your health.
