One of the most frequently asked questions by parents and students these days is ‘How will they be graded?’. s DepEd pursues learning continuity, it is imperative for schools to take stock of assessment and grading practices that will most meaningfully support learner development and respond to varied context at these trying times. This is the guiding principle of the Department of Education (DepEd) that the English teachers of Talipan National High School (TNHS) look after to as they conduct their School Learning Action Cell (SLAC) for the month of October focusing on the Interim Policy Guidelines for Assessment and Grading in Light of the Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan which is provided in the DepEd Order No. 31 series of 2020. The meeting which was held last October 16 at Grade 9 Cassiopeia Room, started with an Opening Prayer led by Mrs. Amelia G. Eroles. It was followed by a food for thought shared by Mrs. Kristine D. Galac. Roll call or checking of attendance were also made and was followed by giving of short reminder to follow social and physical distancing as the department conducted

the meeting in face to face. Grezula led the meeting discussing the regulations to follow in the physical reporting of the teachers. She also explained several considerations and reacted to different issues faced by the teachers and the education system nowadays – questions regarding how students will be graded to name a few.

This led her discussion of the policy guidelines for assessment and grading that will be implemented this pandemic season as students shifted to Modular Distance Learning (MDL). The head teacher started with stating the rationale, objectives and important terms to remember. She also discussed the planning assessment, conducting assessment remotely, feedback and remediation, grading and promotion, and weight distribution of summative assessment components in English. “For English and other language subjects, Written Works will be 40% while Performance Tasks is 60%. Total of 100 per cent”, said Grezula. After that she gave the teachers more explanation on the role of technology and monitoring and evaluation. With the help of English Department Master Teacher Ma’am Lirio G. Parale, teachers were able to refresh again their knowledge on sample techniques for formative assessment, sample summative assessment tools and portfolio grading using holistic rubric. “Always remember na if we give our students tasks or activities that fall under Performance Task, we should always give them rubric para alam nila ang points na makukuha nila with the effort and creativity they will exert in their output”, said Parale. The teachers were then given time to view the different rubric on their soft copies of the DepEd Memo. To end the discussion regarding the assessment and grading, Parale and Grezula briefly discussed the Classroom Assessment Resource Book which includes topics such as Difference between Formative and Summative Assessments, Formal and Informal Assessment, Assessment Methods, Rubric Types, Examples of Topics suitable for Essays, Interview Practice Activities, Sample Topics for Journal Writing, Sample Topics for Oral Presentations, Sample Topics for Surveys, Sample Topics for Think-Pair-Share activities and many more.
