Talipeño scribes reap awards in Regional School Press Conference, invitational journ competitions

Following its triumphant third-overall finish in the first-ever Virtual Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC), El/Ang Talipeño, the official school publication of Talipan NHS added more laurels to its bag as more Talipeno journalists received awards from the Regional Schools Press Conference 2022-2023 and other online private journalistic competitions.

After placing 1st and 2nd places in their respective categories in the division level, Opinion Editor Charmelle Grace V. Jacob (Grade 9 FL) ranked 6th in the Column Writing Filipino while newbie opinion writer Marl Jarred A. Encina (Grade 8 BP) placed 7th in Editorial Writing English during the RSPC held virtually.

“As their adviser and coach, magandang simula ito para sa Talipeno Press. These kids are young and newbies and still in the process of learning their categories. Talaga lang likas na mahuhusay at willing talagang matuto lalo

na sa aming trainings”, said Jerwin Tierra, School Paper Adviser.

Meanwhile, four more campus journalists waved the TNHS banner in the national stage after winning awards in the ExplainED Ph Online Press Competition, a nationwide workshop and contests from campus journlalists initiated by Explained Ph. Head Cartoonist Aldous Gabriel F. Reforsado (Grade 11 STEM-JCA) bagged the championship with his cartoon in Editorial Cartooning. Senior Photojournalist

Daniel Calusin (Grade 12 STEM-EDT) ranked 2nd Place in Pagkuha ng Larawan – SLR Category while News Writer Almira Fate B. Lusanta (Grade 8 BP) and Copy Editor Kristel Mae M. Urciana (Grade 9 FL) both ssettled in 4th Place in Pagsulat ng Balita and Pagwawasto ng Sipi at Pag-uulo ng Balita.

“Sobrang nakakatuwa itong mga batang ito. I was present during the awarding at nandoon ‘yung kaba at tuwa lalo na kapag tinatawag ang pangalan ng ating paaralan na inirepresenta ng mga batang ito. I am thankful for their coach and adviser Sir Jerwin and for their parents for allowing these kids to learn and grow more. And I will always be proud of these young writers for doing their best and for always bringing pride to our school”, said Dr. Luningning R. Mendoza, School Head.

Just weeks after the ExplainED victory, two more young scribes added recognitions to the TNHS community after joining the Sibulan 2022: First Online Journ Konfab of the Kingfisher, the official student publication of Southern Luzon State University – Main Campus last June 2-4, 2022.

Fresh from his win, Daniel Calusin again proved his hand and eyes skills are better after winning the championship this time in Photojournalism – Secondary Filipino category. Meanwhile, Managing Editor Mark Vincent Macasinag (Grade 11 HUMSS) also won the championship in Sports Writing – Secondary Filipino Category.

“Ito ‘yung parehas naming unang championship na nakuha sa lahat ng contests na nilabanan naming. Thankful lang kami kay Lord for always guiding us, kay Sir [Jerwin] na ‘di nagsasawang magturo sa amin and syempre sa KF and SLSU for providing this opportunity to showcase our talents and skills”, said Macasinag.

In the same month, Talipeno Press joined the BayLayn 2022 (Para sa Bayan at Lasalyano) an annual campus journalism workshop and competition initiated by Ang Pahayagang Plaridel of De La Salle University (DLSU).

Senior Cartoonists Aldous Gabriel F. Reforsado (Grade 11 STEM) and Vincent Charles Aton (Grade 11 STEM) won the championship for Pinakamahusay na Koleksyon ng Dibuho with ther creative and wellcrafted cartoons.

Then, Charmelle Grace V. Jacob (Grade 9 FL) did it again in Editorial Writing (Filipino) after placing 3rd for Pinakamahusay na Editoryal to end the School Year 2021-2022 in a high note.

Better Year in a Better Home

With all the recognitions, awards and achievements that the school publication brought to Talipan NHS, the school administration rewarded the team with a renovated newsroom where campus journalists can work and train as school year 2022-2023 welcomes back students in face-to-face mode.

“Nagpapasalamat kami sa effort ng English Department Head Ma’am Gina A. Grezula for always being supportive. Napakalaking bagay nitong pagsasaayos at pagpapaganda ng newsroom para sa mga bata. Makakapagtrabaho at makakapagtrain kami dito nang maayos at syempre it will surely motivate them to do better pa”, said Tierra.

Meanwhile, after series of qualifying examinations and interview, the school publication loaded this year’s roster with 20 new campus journalists in various categories following the departure of 8 Grade 12 staffers who already graduated.

Ronalyn Portes, Grade 12 STEM was once again appointed as Editor-in-Chief and led the team in initiating different programs along with the weekly training of campus journalists.

For the Quarter 1, the school publication successfully opened the Dibuho, a mini editorial cartoon exhibit located at the newsroom. With SciTech Department, campus journalists and students were abel to win exciting prizes in the Sci-Tech Bowl of Trivia Challenge. Lastly, alongside the celebration of Copyreading and Headlinw Writing Week, the Portes and CRHW launched the Write Right, a free writing assistance program for students. The said program aims to help students in improving their essays with the help of writing assistants composed of copyreaders and selected language teachers.

To start this year’s winning tradition, Jase Gerald V. Arquiza, Chief Graphic Artist and Social Media Head grabbed a back-to-back win in Pitik Bulag Tagisan Editorial Cartooning Contest after placing 2nd and Top 10 Finalist respectively last September.

At present, the team is currently preparing for the annual Elevate 11: Campus Journalism Workshop and Contest initiated by UP Radio Circle and the possible return of face-to-face Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) this school year.
