“When it comes to the program targets, wala namang nabago, same pa rin naman. Nagkaroon lang tayo ng changes sa kung saan siya gagawin dahil nga nawala na yung dating lote natin. espite losing the actual space for Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP), Talipan National High School (TNHS) sustained its clean, healthy and green program by launching the remodelled Gulayan sa Paaralan in the midst of the pandemic and new-normal in education. According to Visitacion E. Dupa, GPP Coordinator in TNHS, the said program still aimed to address the general objective which is to promote food security in the schools and communities through self-help food production activities and appreciation of agriculture as a life support system. “When it comes to the program targets, wala namang nabago, same pa rin naman. Nagkaroon lang tayo ng changes sa kung saan siya gagawin dahil nga nawala na yung dating lote natin. Ang maganda sa programa ngayon,

we were able to maximize ‘yung mga empty areas natin dito sa loob mismo ng paaralan,” said Dupa. The redesigned GPP now involved all departments in the program as each was assigned to different areas in the school premises. “Nagsimula lahat at the beginning of the school and para mas lalong ganahan ‘yung mga teachers natin to participate in the program, ginawa natin siyang competition. From Page 1 This is to motivate them na hindi lang basta magtanim kundi maging creative pa sa proyekto nila,” the coordinator explained. Mathematics and ESP department for example were able to maximize a very small space by putting vertical garden to grow vegetables like pechay, mustasa and tomatoes. “Literal na maliit talaga ‘yung napa-assigned saming lugar para dito sa Gulayan sa Paaralan pero with the creative minds of the Math and ESP teachers, na-maximized talaga namin ‘yung space and maayos na naalagaan ang mga tanim,” said Edna G. Adel, Math-ESP Department Head. English Department on the other hand, used siit or bamboo twigs to grow climbing and vining vegetables in their assigned area near the Nantes Building. Filipino Department and other remaining departments meanwhile used recycled materials to plant vegetables like eggplant, okra, and many more. “We’re really happy with the positive and active participation of all teachers from all departments. The loss of the actual Gulayan sa Paarlan space is a blessing in disguise dahil doon mas napaganda pa lalo natin ang loob ng ating paaralan. May mga tanim na pwedeng anihin at maaliwalas na kapaligiran na kailangan natin ngayong panahon ng pandemya,” Sherwin E. De Rama, TLE Department Head. The new Gulayan sa Paarlan in Talipan NHS is not only about addressing malnutrition and hunger anymore. It now eyes to help the school achieve a clean, green, and healthy environment for teachers, learners and visitors visiting the school premises with lesser chance of getting infected with COVID-19 Virus. TNHS GPP also believes that with a healthy, clean, and green surrounding, aside from having a ready food basket, it is also ready to promote safe and healthy environment for everyone. At present, the GPP committee is currently planning a sustainability program to keep the project working and as how learners could get involved in the program too now that the school starts preparing for the implementation of limited face-to-face classes by next school year.
