alipan National High School (TNHS) continues to foster a culture of readiness for all of its employees in the event of a fire or strong earthquake by conducting a fire and earthquake safety awareness training last March 30.

Organized by the School Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (SDRRM) and Curriculum Chiefs, half-day training was held to refresh the teaching and nonteaching personnel’s knowledge on safety awareness and to check their readiness, responsiveness, and capabilities should a fire or a strong earthquake hit the area. The seminar proper was led by Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Pagbilao Station with SF04 Jonathan Husana who discussed the background and history of fire incidents in the country and fire statistics which were shown to emphasize the theme ‘Ligtas Ang May Alam’.

“We really insist na magkaroon talaga ng ganitong mga uri ng safety [awareness] seminar. Nextime na may fire drill tayo dito, i-oobserve agad namin ang inyong area and we’ll check kung naka-ready na lahat at kung tama ba ang inyong prepared scenario,” said SFO4 Husana. The resource speaker also stressed out the weighty role of teachers in time of disasters and continued on his topic asking the participants about their plans considering the status of the classrooms, facilities, and availability of safety resources. “The safety of your students should always be on top of your mind. With that you can continuously endeavour to establish a culture of readiness in your school should a fire or a massive earthquake occurs,” he added. It was followed by the demonstration on how to put off a burning LPG cylinder and important facts including the step-by-step procedure on how to safely operate a fire extinguisher. To assess the participants’ readiness, a number of teachers were picked to simulate an actual fire and rescue scenario while the rest of the participants performed the actual evacuation. After the drill, ground facilitators SF02 Reynan G. Veluz, SF01 Lloyd P. Martinez, and F01 Gideon Ephraim A. Ranola gave their comments and review on the practice performed by the teachers. “It wasn’t that accurate or closely similar to what really happens in the real scenario pero ang isa sa magandang bagay na nakita natin is yung leadership ng bawat isa ay gumana. Okay lang ‘yun dahil it’s your first time at mape-perfect niyo rin ‘yan sa mga susunod pa nating drill dito sa Talipan,” the fire officer said. Meanwhile, TNHS Principal Dr. Luningning R. Mendoza also shared her words of strength to ignite the fire set on the objectives of the initiative held. “This fire and safety awareness seminar and training are also part of our preparations for the limited face-toface classes… nakaka-excite ito kaya huwag kayong aalis at huwag kayong bibitaw. Just enjoy the activities that the organizers and our guests prepared for us,” Mendoza prompted the participants. SDRRM Deputy Officer and Head Teacher III of the Science Department Rowena P. Albaran were also present to welcome the guests and participants and provide assistance to the SDRRM team led by their Coordinator Andrew Carmelo A. Rubico who managed majority of all the preparations. Kung outcome [ang pag-uusapan] ime-measure ko siya ng 7 out of 10. Why? [Kasi] kulang pa. Kulang pa yung drills. Next time evacuation drill will be put into action,” said Rubico. “On the good side, camaraderie happened combined with the acquisition of new knowledge,” he added. The program ended with Rodante C. De Castro, Head Teacher III of the Araling Panlipunan Department extending gratitude to BFP Pagbilao, Dr. Mendoza, Head Teachers, SDRRM Team, GPTA Officers and TNHS teachers and employees for the time, effort, and participation shared to make the training fiery in new skills and experiences learned.
