SVET's owners, Emily and Alex Etman, emigrated from Latvia to the United States in 1990. Alex Etman was an award-winning journalist in the Soviet Union, and they knew they wanted to start a newspaper. They moved to Chicago and worked at other jobs for about a year to save money for equipment and additional start-up costs. In 1992, they launched the SVET Russian newspaper and currently have two newspapers; SVET and Saturday Plus, Russian-American Community Guide, 1240AM radio program, smartphone app, the social media network, and networking events (6-7 per year). Over fifty percent of SVET's 500+ clients have been with us for more than five years, some as many as twenty years.
