FROM THE EDITOR

IT’S GOOD TO LIVE, BUT IT’S EVEN BETTER TO LIVE WELL!

In 2025, everything was permeated, engulfed, affected, illuminated, mixed up, and shaken up by Donald Trump, just as five years ago it was by the COVID virus, and even people far removed from politics felt and continue to feel aftershocks. The president did not achieve the two main personal goals he set for himself (there is no end in sight to the Slavic war, and he received the Nobel Prize only as a gift from laureate Maria Machado), but never before has the world depended on one person as it does now. No one knows how it will all end, but it’s not bad that this man is playing for us and not against us. True, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which has been analyzing the coordinates of our world on the path to Armageddon since 1945, has moved the symbolic hand of the Doomsday Clock to 85 seconds before midnight for the first time in history, but let me tell you: there will be no end of the world! Therefore, «we should live, sew sundresses and light cotton dresses» as the wise poet Yuri Levitansky once wrote. All of us who have flocked to Florida from different countries understand that it is foolish to worry about something that is unlikely to happen, because life, no matter how you look at it, is short and should be lived to the fullest, as happily and wisely as possible.

To help you with this, we present the third edition of the Florida Eastern European Community Guide - the most useful set of tools for a good life. Over 35 years in this business, our publishing house has accumulated experience that allows us to separate the wheat from the chaff and recommend the very best in their fields. I will conclude with our long-standing, proven slogan: «We work for you», but this is a two-way street, because without you, there would be no us....

Here, you will find information about many things, including those that will help you achieve your main goals. In fact, that’s what we’ve been in the publishing business for 34 years - helping our fellow countrymen in word and deed. We work for you, and it is two-way traffic because there is no us without you.

City of Aventura celebrates 30th anniversary in style

This November, the City of Aventura will mark its 30th anniversary with a monthlong celebration honoring its past, present and future.

What began in 1988 as 785 acres of swampland has since transformed into one of South Florida’s premier communities. Visionaries such as Harry Soffer, Don Soffer and George Berlin saw the potential to create not just a neighborhood, but a destination. Thirty years later, their vision has been realized—and surpassed—as Aventura continues to thrive as a vibrant, world-class city.

A CITY BUILT ON STABILITY AND

GROWTH

Since its incorporation in 1996, Aventura has maintained the lowest tax rates in South Florida, never once raising its millage. Today, Mayor Howard S. Weinberg, Esq., together with Commissioners Cliff Ain, Gustavo Blachman, Amit Bloom, Rachel Friedland, Paul Kruss, and Cindy Orlinsky, guide the city with a focus on fiscal responsibility and high-quality services. City Manager Bryan Pegues and his team of directors oversee daily operations, ensuring that residents, businesses, and visitors alike experience a safe, welcoming and first-class community.

Aventura prioritizes fiscal responsibility, quality services, and infrastructure above all else.

In a city of more than 40,000 residents, Aventura has fewer than 50 full-time employees outside of the Police Department.

The city’s model of outsourcing has seen Aventura partner with companies that deliver top-quality results for the city, while doing so at a cost that is less than the city could deliver those services itself.

Mayor Weinberg described the city’s approach, saying, “Aventura’s model gets the best in outcomes for the least in cost. Since its inception, Aventura has consistently delivered the best return on investment of any city in South Florida. We’re incredibly safe, have excellent infrastructure, offer top-quality programming, and have municipal charter schools that deliver worldclass education.”

INVESTING IN EDUCATION

Education has been central to Aventura’s success. The city is home to two award-winning charter schools: Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES, K–8) and Don Soffer Aventura High School. Both schools boast strong academic reputations, having been graded an “A” every year since their first grade was issued. To meet growing demand, Aventura recently acquired 3.7 acres of land next to Don Soffer Aventura High School, where a new high school will be built. Once it is open, the current high school building will become a middle school, and ACES will go from K-8 to elementary.

The education offered in Aventura fuels the desire of young families to live in the city, giving Aventura’s leaders tremendous confidence that Aventura’s schools are developing the city’s and community’s future leaders.

PUBLIC SAFETY AND COMMUNITY SERVICES

Aventura’s Police Department began in 1997, with current City Manager Bryan Pegues serving as one of the department’s original officers. The department achieved

accreditation in 2000, making it the youngest department to receive accreditation at the time. Under the leadership of Chief Michael Bentolila, who joined the department shortly after its creation, the Aventura Police Department has continued to ensure that Aventura remains one of the safest cities in Florida.

Aventura’s elected leaders and administration have always prioritized public safety, with approximately twothirds of all full-time city employees working in the Police Department.

“Nothing is more important in any city than public safety. Aventura prides itself on being a place where people can live, work and visit, knowing that our police department keeps our city safe,” said Pegues.

SHOPPING, ARTS, AND LIFESTYLE

Aventura is also home to some of the nation’s most recognizable destinations. USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards recently named Aventura Mall the Best Mall in the Nation. The waterfront Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, is directed by Jeff Kiltie and hosts a year-round calendar of concerts, theater performances and special events. And the JW Marriott Turnberry Resort, with Tidal Cove Waterpark and two worldclass 18-hole golf courses, stands as an international destination for leisure and conferences.

Residents also enjoy practical and innovative city services, including a free community bus system, complimentary Freebee rides, and interactive digital kiosks that provide event listings, business information, wayfinding and emergency contacts.

A MONTH OF CELEBRATION

The 30th anniversary celebration will feature a series of events throughout the month of November. A highlight will be the Aventura $30 Flavor Fest, a citywide culinary showcase offering special menus that highlight the community’s diverse dining scene. The month culminates with Founders’ Day on Saturday, November 8th, at Gulfstream Park, featuring family-friendly entertainment, live performances, activities and food.

MIAMI

Population: 487,014 people

Median age: 39.7 years

Demographics and Population

It is the 2nd largest city in Florida (after Jacksonville) and the 42nd largest city in the United States. Miami is currently growing at a rate of 1.09% annually and its population has increased by 19.73% since the most recent census, which recorded a population of 399,457 in 2010.

The 5 largest ethnic groups in Miami, FL are White (Hispanic) (65%), Black or African American (Non-Hispanic) (13%), White (Non-Hispanic) (11%), Other (Hispanic) (5.46%) and Black or African American (Hispanic) (2.29%).

The median property value in Miami, FL is $350,400, and the homeownership rate is 30.6%.

History

Spaniards in the 16th century found a village (perhaps 2,000 years old) of Tequesta Indians on the site. The name Mayaimi, probably meaning “big water” or “sweet water,” may have referred to Lake Okeechobee or to local Native Americans who took their name from the lake. In 1567 the Spanish established a mission there as part of a futile attempt to subdue the Tequesta. They ceded the area to Great Britain in 1763 but regained it in 1783. After the United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1821, Fort Dallas was built (1836) as a base during the Seminole Wars. A few settlers—among them Julia D. Tuttle, known as the “mother of Miami,” and William B. Brickell—gradually moved into the area.

In 1896 Henry M. Flagler extended his Florida East Coast Railway to the site after Tuttle and Brickell each gave him half of their landholdings for the project. Flagler had been convinced to extend the railroad after a freeze

during the winter of 1894–95 killed most of Florida’s citrus crop; Tuttle reportedly sent him a fresh orange blossom to prove that the freeze had not reached Miami. Flagler dredged the harbor, started constructing the Royal Palm Hotel, and promoted tourism. Miami was incorporated the same year.

During the Florida land boom in the early and mid1920s, the city’s population more than tripled, but the collapse of this speculation, compounded by a devastating hurricane in 1926, dampened Miami’s fortunes for more than a decade. Neighboring Miami Beach underwent a brief construction boom in the mid-1930s, when many Art Deco buildings were erected, but this came to an end during World War II, when soldiers replaced tourists at the oceanfront hotels and long stretches of beach were converted to rifle ranges. After the war, many soldiers returned to the Miami area to live, and in the 1950s and ’60s Latin American immigrants, particularly those from Cuba, began to arrive in large numbers. In the 15 years following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, it is estimated that some 500,000 Cubans fled to Miami; many of these immigrants received assimilation aid from the U.S. federal government. During the 1980s Miami gained a reputation as a centre of the illegal cocaine trade, and several acts of violence were directed against foreign tourists in the early 1990s; however, by the end of the 20th century, tourism was rebounding. In 1992 Hurricane Andrew caused some 50 deaths and considerable property damage to areas of

the county just south of Miami, although the city itself was largely spared.

The Contemporary Miami

The downtown skyline of Miami features a contemporary look, with a large collection of gleaming glass-walled skyscrapers accented with neon lighting at night. The Brickell neighborhood, just south of the city’s historic central business district, became one of Miami’s fastest-growing neighborhoods and is the city’s major financial district. More than 70 percent of the population is Hispanic/Latino. Indeed, the city’s close relationship to Latin America is especially well represented in its ethnic neighborhoods. The Little Havana district, just west of downtown, developed as a largely Cuban enclave within the city. Its annual Calle Ocho festival (March; part of the Carnival Miami celebration) draws large crowds of visitors. Little Haiti, to the north of downtown, developed as a primarily Haitian neighborhood after refugees began arriving in the city in the 1990s.

Climate

A tropical climate helps to make Miami one of America’s great winter resorts, and tourism is a major component of the city’s economy. The miles of shoreline are lined with glittering skyscraper hotels and are dotted with marinas, yacht clubs, and golf courses. The city is also a center of international banking and finance, business services, manufacturing (including

apparel, medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, printing, and metal products) and international commerce. The Port of Miami handles international shipping and is a world leader in cruise ship operations. Miami International Airport also handles international cargo going mostly to Latin America and the Caribbean and is a major travel hub. The city is served by a highway network that includes the Dixie Highway, Tamiami Trail, and Florida’s Turnpike.

Museums

The Miami Seaquarium, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens (1916; estate of industrialist James Deering), Bayside Marketplace, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, and Jungle Island (formerly Parrot Jungle and Gardens) are among the area’s many attractions. There are museums of history, art, and science, as well as several theatre, music, and dance organizations. Scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing, and sportfishing are among the many popular outdoor activities, as are sailing regattas and fishing tournaments. Horse and greyhound racetracks and jai alai frontons offer pari-mutuel betting. The city is home to several professional sports teams, including the Miami Marlins (baseball), Miami Dolphins (gridiron football), and Miami Heat (basketball), and the annual Orange Bowl Festival (January) features a parade and college football game. Biscayne National Park is south of the city, and Everglades National Park is southwest.

Useful Information

The Miami metropolitan area has many institutions of higher education, including the University of Miami (1925) in Coral Gables, Barry University (1940) in Miami Shores, St. Thomas University (1961), Florida Memorial College (1879), International Fine Arts College (1965), MiamiDade Community College (1960), and Florida International University (1972), the site of the National Hurricane Center operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Jackson Memorial Hospital, Baptist Health, and the University of Miami Hospital are among the city’s major medical complexes. The city is a world leader in marine study. Located there are the famed University of Miamiaffiliated Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science and oceanographic laboratories of NOAA.

SUNNY ISLES BEACH

Population: 22,903 people

Median age: 49.6 years

Median age: 50.2 years

Aventura is a planned, suburban city in northeastern MiamiDade County, Florida, United States, 15 miles (24 km) north of Miami and part of the Miami metropolitan area of South Florida. The city is especially known for Aventura Mall, the third largest mall in the United States by total square feet of retail space and the largest mall in Florida. The city name is from the Spanish word for “adventure”, and was named “Aventura” after the developers of the original group of condominiums in the area, Eddie Lewis and Don Soffer, who had remarked “What an adventure this is going to be.”

Initially referred to as “Turnberry”, Aventura began to be developed during the early 1970s and became an incorporated city in 1995. The Aventura Police Department was formed in 1997.

Aventura is located in northeastern Miami-Dade County. It is bordered to the east by Golden Beach and Sunny Isles Beach, to the south by North Miami Beach, and to the west by unincorporated Ojus. It is bordered to the north by Hallandale Beach in Broward County. U.S. Route 1 (Biscayne Boulevard) runs along the western edge of the city, leading south 15 miles (24 km) to Downtown Miami and north 12 miles (19 km) to Fort Lauderdale. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 3.5 square miles (9.1 km2). Of that, 2.6 sq mi (6.7 km2) are land and 0.9 sq mi (2.3 km2) (24.73%) are water. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and Dumfoundling Bay form the eastern border of the city, while the southern border is within Maule Lake.

The Aventura Express shuttle bus is a city-run public bus service, free to anyone in Aventura. The service runs three routes (North, Central, and South). Miami-Dade Transit’s Metrobus and Broward County Transit bus systems also run through the city. Metrobus provide connections to Metrorail and Metromover at

Government Center via Biscayne Boulevard/US 1. Over the last 30 years, travel infrastructure in Aventura has been heavily funded and influenced by developers of the many highrise condominium projects near the beach. Brightline is an inter-city rail service operating between Miami and Orlando. The Aventura station, located adjacent to the Aventura Mall, provides service along the route.

Tri-Rail commuter rail service has also been proposed to run on the FEC line. Another proposal would extend the Miami Metrorail along the US 1 corridor from Downtown Miami to the Broward County line, which would pass through Aventura and Hallandale Beach.

The most famous shopping attraction is Aventura Mall, a 2,400,000 sq ft (222,967 m2) indoor shopping center. The outdoor malls are “Aventura Town Center”, “Aventura Shopping Center”, “Aventura Commons”, “The Promenade Shops”, and “The Shoppes at the Waterways”. The city also has its own exclusive parks and recreation department which operate Founders Park, Founders Park Bayside, Waterways Park, Waterways Dog Park, Veterans Park, The Community Recreation Center, and the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center. At the geographical center of Aventura is the Turnberry Golf Course, encircled by Aventura’s Country

Club Drive. The Turnberry Golf Course is a three-mile walking/ jogging paved promenade which overlooks a multi million-dollar horticultural exhibit, lakes, opulent residential high rises, yachts and the Atlantic Ocean.

Schools

Aventura is served by the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system. Aventura Waterways K-8 Center serves as the public K-8 school of MDCPS which serves Aventura. The school is outside of the city limits but all children that live in Aventura are in the boundary for that school. Dr. Michael Krop High School in Ives Estates is currently the sole MDCPS high school serving North Miami-Dade County residents, including those of Aventura. Krop is considered to be a magnet school because it has a “Students Training in the Arts Repertory” program, and has a total student body population of 2,833.

There are also charter schools established with sponsorship from the municipal government, Aventura City of Excellence School, a K-8 school. It was for years the only public school within the City of Aventura. It is operated by a private charter school company called Charter Schools USA. Built and opened in 2003, ACES was ranked in the top 10 of all schools in Florida. The Northeast Branch of the MiamiDade Public Library System serves Aventura[27] as a means of accessing information for all education alike.

Regional universities and higher education institutions

include Florida International University: Biscayne Bay Campus (North Miami).

In 2022, Aventura became the first city in Florida to offer the opportunity for the public to text its city government. The city monitors the text messages and responds to questions and concerns.

GOLDEN BEACH

Population: 1,073 people

Median age: 49.8 years

History

In the late 1920’s two brothers, R.W. and Henry G. Ralston, surveyed a 1.8-milelong swath of mangroves and sand dunes. They were immediately inspired by the serene crystal-clear coastline and the prospect of opportunity. That opportunity would later become known as the Town of Golden Beach, which is one of Miami-Dade County’s oldest municipalities.

The Town of Golden Beach was incorporated, under its present status, by a special act of the Legislature of the State of Florida in 1929. Upon approval, it became a legalized community on May 23, 1929, and has remained one of purely single family homes. Presently, the Town has a total of 391 existing single-family residences, 18 of which are vacant lots. The single-family residents are distributed as follows: 131 residences along the east and west sides of A1A (ocean side)

260 residences on the mainland portion and islands on intra-coastal waterways

Nestled in exclusivity and privacy within a short driving distance from the large urban areas of Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, Golden Beach is convenient to fine dining, cultural centers, professional sports venues, and world class shopping centers such as the prestigious Shoppes of Bal Harbour.

Once noted in Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” as the Town with the only jail from which you could fish by putting a pole out of the window, Golden Beach is now renowned for its upscale image. The same qualities that once drew families such as the Firestones, DuPonts, and Roosevelts have attracted current celebrities as well as ordinary people who love to live in Golden Beach. The old mangrove swamps are now replaced by stately homes.

On May 23, 2024, coinciding with the Town’s 95th anniversary, we had the ribbon cutting ceremony commemorating the opening of our brand new Civic Center Complex

and Landfall Team Bunker which was featured in Trend Magazine. The bunker is the first of its kind in the country that can withstand a category 5 storm. It offers first responders a place to take shelter so they can render immediate aid once the weather clears without having to evacuate the area.

Recreation

The Town features 9 parks including the historic Loggia Beach Park and Pavilion which is exclusive for residents only. We recently finished our new tennis and pickleball courts and have a basketball and padel court on the horizon, along with a dog park and tot lot as well. Our Wellness Center is currently under construction with an estimated completion date in late 2026 and will feature a state-of-the-art fitness facility with various other recreational rooms and a rentable event space.

History

Captain William H. Fulford was attracted to what is now North Miami Beach during his Coast Guard patrol along the Atlantic side of the peninsula during the Spanish-American War. In 1881 he explored Big Snake Creek (later renamed the Oleta River) and found this area amid lowlands, marshes, and mangroves, a retreat from the fury of the Atlantic. When Henry Flagler extended the Florida East Coast Railway from West Palm Beach to Miami in 1896, he placed depots at numerous spots along the route, and small towns quickly developed around those stops. Many of the settlers to the area were homesteaders who were attracted to the area by offers of 160 acres of free land by the federal government. In 1897, utilizing the Homestead Act, Captain Fulford acquired a 160-acre land patent from President Grover Cleveland.

During the 1890s settlers established farms along the east side of the Oleta River. That area was originally named Ojus in

1897 by Albert Fitch, a farmer who wanted to grow pineapples in the rich soil. The word Ojus is a Seminole word for «plenty» or «lots of», and when Fitch was in the area, Ojus grew plenty of peas, beans, sugar cane, and tomatoes.

In 1912 Lafe Allen, a former newspaper owner, came to Florida. He and an associate purchased Captain Fulford’s original grant plus additional property with the idea of developing and selling lots. Eventually, they purchased 557 acres of land. In 1917, Mr. Allen made plans for a «perfect city» calling for 80-foot wide residential streets and 100 and 125-foot wide business thoroughfares. North Miami Beach’s street layout is as the pioneer pictured it in 1917 with wide avenues named Fulford Boulevard (now known as Northeast 172nd Street) and Flagler Boulevard (now known as Northeast 19th Avenue). The Fulfordby-the-Sea Company began selling lots in 1922. During the Florida land boom of the 1920’s, lots were sometimes sold eight times before ever being recorded.

There were a great many people from all over the United States with money to invest in the great Florida Land Boom of the mid-1920s. They flocked to South Florida in hopes of getting riches made when orange groves and swamp lands were subdivided, sold, and developed. In 1925, Carl Fisher (who built the Indianapolis Speedway in 1909) was developing Miami

Beach and envisioned this area as the winter auto racing capital of the world. He built the world’s fastest 1-1/4 mile «boardtrack» (a wooden, oval race track). It was located at the northern end of Flagler Boulevard (NE 19th Avenue) in today’s Sky Lake neighborhood before being demolished in the hurricane of 1926. The city, which had been unincorporated at the time of the great hurricane in 1926, sustained devastating damage. The speedway and radio station were blown down and demolished. The hurricane essentially ended the South Florida real estate boom, and it did not flourish again until after World War II.

North Miami Beach Public Library (NMB Library), also referred to as the Lafe Allen Public Library, is a 23,000 square foot facility located at 1601 NE 164th Street in North Miami Beach, Florida. The library’s collection currently contains over 60,000 items, including both fiction and non-fiction materials, DVDs, audio books, compact discs, newspapers, magazines, and foreign language materials. Digital services include access to e-materials and reference resources, such as Florida Electronic Library, Newsbank, Reference USA, World Book, NoveList Plus, and more.[37]

In 1959, the North Miami Beach Library was initially opened inside of a storefront on NE 163rd Street as a branch of the MiamiDade Public Library System (then known as the City of Miami Library system). This location was relocated and expanded to two storefronts at the corner of NE 19th Avenue and NE 169th Street the following year.[38] In 1961, however, the city ended its attachment with the City of Miami Library system and became an independent library. During this time, the library was merely a staff of two. The staff had a minor budget of 25,000 to build the collection for the library. After residents of the City of North Miami Beach voted to build a permanent location for the library in 1964, a new building was constructed on 164th Street and opened

in 1965. Renovations to this facility in 1981 and 1994 grew the branch from its original 10,000 square feet to make room for the library’s expanding collection. The last reservation took place in 1994 and granted the facility its current dimensions at over 23,000 square feet.

San Marco

San Marco was built in the 1920s to resemble the Piazza San Marco in Italy. Here you’ll find an eclectic arts and shopping district with trendy bistros, distinctive boutiques and a diverse population.

Location: South of downtown and north of Mandarin. The neighbors: Single professionals, creatives and artists.

Northside

Once a heavy industrial area, the Northside has turned into a residential area with several acre lots and new home developments. It’s also close to the airport, shopping and several state parks and nature preserves. While downtown Jax is only minutes away, the Northside remains somewhat rural and peaceful.

Location: 20 minutes northeast of the city. The neighbors: Families, retirees and first-time homebuyers.

The Beachfront

Did somebody say Salt Life? The Atlantic, Neptune and Jacksonville Beach areas host some of the priciest and desirable neighborhoods in Jacksonville. The median home price in the area is around $335,000, which comes with close access to the water and outdoor life.

Location: East of Jacksonville along the coast. The neighbors: Families and retirees.

Southside

Southside and Mandarin are loaded with history and boast some of the most stunning river views in all of Jacksonville. The residential area has a low crime rate, great schools and an extensive network of parks and recreation development. It was even described as a “tropical paradise” by author Harriet Beecher Stowe.

Location: South of San Marco along the St. Johns River. The neighbors: Families with young children and young couples buying their first home.

Westside

If you love the water and prefer living in a rural setting, the Westside and Orange Park are for you. The Westside area features full-service marinas, boating facilities and the Naval Air Station Jacksonville. This neighborhood offers reasonable house prices, several-acre lots and a relaxing break from the hustle and bustle downtown.

Location: Just south of Jacksonville and west of the St. Johns River.

The neighbors: Navy families, horse lovers and people who desire land.

Welcome to Naples Florida

Welcome to Naples, a paradise of sun, shore and nature harmoniously blended with the cosmopolitan and cultural center this city has become. Despite its metropolitan population and myriad housing developments, Naples remembers its Indian and early pioneering heritage. This diversity combined with its host of attractions, amenities and activities make Naples a great place to live and visit. We’re showcasing all that Naples Florida has to offer right here. Make this web site your springboard for jumping into the Cities and Lifestyles that make up our paradise!

Naples Pier

THE OLDE NAPLES PIER

First came the hotel, and then the pier.

In January, 1888, there was no pier. The Naples Company found and purchased the fastest steamship on the coast: Captain Merritt’s «Fearless». This ship, which ran from Punta Gorda to Naples, entered through Gordon’s Pass, up into the Bay of Naples, according to the Company’s promotional brochure. However, in low tide, passengers had to be shuttled ashore by «lighters» out in the Gulf, which featured troublesome sandbars (and some rock’n’roll).

Thus, a construction contract was let to Captain James Canty in Ft. Myers in June, 1888, for a 600-foot T-shaped wharf in 18 feet deep water on the Gulf side, facing the hotel. Pilings and timbers were off-loaded in the surf and towed ashore.

When the hotel opened in January, 1889, the wooden pier had just been completed. It was the place for passengers, freight, and fishing. The post office was located at the foot of the pier (where it stayed until 1922, when an accidental cigarette fire destroyed the building and part of the pier).

A combination boardwalk and tramway fitted with rails extended from the foot of the pier, along Pier Street (now called Twelfth Avenue South), to the hotel. A cart could easily roll materials and luggage, but children loved getting on for a push. By 1909, a bathhouse and changing rooms were available; freight lifts had also been added. Then, the unwelcome guests arrived!

AVENIA: The Embodiment of Sophistication and Artistry of FENDI Casa, Redefining

Thoughtful Living in Aventura

Across South Florida, luxury homebuyers are becoming more deliberate about how and where they live. For many families, that intention extends well beyond traditional finishes or amenities. It includes the ability to observe religious traditions with ease, to walk within a connected neighborhood, and to feel anchored in a community that supports their lifestyle and beliefs. As these priorities come into a sharper focus, they begin to influence how new luxury residential buildings are designed in South Florida, with Aventura emerging as one of the most natural settings for this evolution.

Set within one of South Florida’s most established Jewish communities, Avenia, Interiors by FENDI Casa, offers residences the balance of refined design with cultural awareness. The boutique development brings together privacy, elegance, and options such as kosher kitchens, offering a residential experience that feels both elevated and practical.

Aventura has long been valued for its walkability, proximity to synagogues, kosher markets, schools, and community institutions, and its appeal to multigenerational families seeking continuity and connection. For residents who observe Shabbat and Jewish holidays, Avenia’s privileged location allows buyers to walk to religious services, gather naturally with neighbors, and maintain familiar routines that are an essential element in how a home supports life and enduring tradition.

The 22-residence building includes Shabbat elevators, so residents can move throughout the building in accordance with religious observance. Prospective buyers also have the option to upgrade to a kosher kitchen, accommodating dietary restrictions and eliminating the need for future retrofitting. These elements are seamlessly integrated into the project instead of being introduced as secondary considerations.

For Fernando de Nuñez y Lugones, Co-Founder and CEO of Vertical Developments, this approach reflects a broader shift in the luxury market. “At Avenia, luxury goes beyond traditional amenities; it’s about creating a residence that respects traditions, routines, and also acknowledges the existing community in this city and their needs.”

Rather than pursuing scale, Avenia embraces an intimate residential model. With only 22 residences, the building offers a sense of familiarity and discretion that many buyers have increasingly started to value. The boutique-style living creates a quieter environment while still delivering hightouch services and thoughtfully curated shared spaces for families who prioritize privacy, security, and connection. Interiors by FENDI Casa bring a refined aesthetic grounded in Italian craftsmanship and heritage, blending elegance with warmth and everyday functionality.

Residences are designed to feel timeless and livable, supporting both daily routines and meaningful gatherings with open living spaces and private bedrooms. In many Jewish households, the home serves as the setting for Shabbat dinners, holidays, and multigenerational moments. What distinguishes Avenia is the seamless integration of these lifestyle considerations within a seamless luxury framework, with residences featuring dedicated dining rooms and kosher kitchens, and a generously proportioned and beautifully appointed resident’s lounge designed to accommodate larger gatherings and occasions.

As Aventura is a sought-after destination for Jewish families, with buyers seeking homes that seamlessly integrate religious traditions and everyday community life. Stability and familiarity are a top priority, with families preferring residences that feel established and enduring, reflecting a larger desire to combine luxury living, tradition, and community all in one place.

In this context, Avenia Aventura represents more than the new premier residential address and first branded residence in the city in over a decade. The development represents a shift toward a more thoughtful, responsive expression of luxury. By recognizing faith, culture, and daily life as integral to meaningful design, the project reflects a new standard in high-end living. For Jewish buyers, finding a home that honors both their values and their expectations for comfort and elegance has become essential.

I just bought a beautiful used S580 from Tom and his associate Julian. The process was seamless, and the team did everything to make the transaction fun. Communication was excellent and they were immensely helpful shipping the car from IL to NY. Buying a new car can be such an unpleasant hassle, not with Hoffman!

Grove Bank & Trust: A Century of Resilience and Heart in the City That Never Stops Growing

As Miami approaches its second century as a world-class city, one of its most trusted financial institutions prepares to celebrate a remarkable milestone of its own. In 2026, Grove Bank & Trust marks 100 years of service, standing as a testament to resilience, innovation, and the deep human connections that have shaped the city’s spirit.

Founded in 1926 in the heart of Coconut Grove, a vibrant village known for its creativity, diversity, and pioneering energy, the bank opened its doors at a time when Miami was young and full of promise. Yet, within weeks of its founding, history tested that promise. The Great Hurricane of 1926 struck with devastating force, leveling homes, ending the region’s real estate boom, and forever changing the trajectory of the young city.

For many businesses, it was the end. For Grove Bank & Trust, it was the beginning of a lifelong commitment to stand by its community through every storm, literal and economic.

When the stock market crash of 1929 followed, bringing widespread uncertainty, Grove Bank & Trust held firm. The bank extended lifelines to residents and local institutions alike, among them the University of Miami, which was struggling to recover. In those difficult years, the bank became a source of hope, pioneering home construction loans that not only put people back to work but also helped rebuild neighborhoods and restore optimism across South Florida.

Building Miami’s Future, One Dream at a Time

Through the 1930s and 1940s, as Miami began to find its footing again, Grove Bank & Trust became more than a financial institution; it became a partner in progress. The bank helped families achieve home ownership, provided loans to small businesses, and supported emerging enterprises that would later become national success stories.

Among its early partners was a fledgling trucking company, Ryder Trucks, that started in South Florida before expanding nationwide. It was a glimpse into the bank’s enduring philosophy: that when you invest in people, communities flourish.

Over the decades, Grove Bank & Trust played a quiet but crucial role in many of Miami’s defining moments. It financed the historic dredging of the Port of Miami, which transformed the city into one of the world’s great international gateways. It backed key infrastructure projects that supported Miami’s evolution from a coastal town into a thriving global metropolis.

Through wars, recessions, hurricanes, and booms, the bank’s steady presence has mirrored Miami’s own, forward-looking, diverse, and full of resilience.

Rooted in Tradition, Focused on Tomorrow

Today, Grove Bank & Trust remains proudly headquartered in Coconut Grove, where the banyan trees still shade the same streets that

witnessed its earliest years. From that original spirit of neighborhood service, a network of branches across Miami-Dade County has grown, each committed to offering personalized private banking and wealth management with the warmth and care that come from nearly a century of relationships.

As Grove Bank & Trust approaches its Centennial Celebration in 2026, the moment offers not only a look back at history, but a celebration of what makes Miami unique — its ability to reinvent itself without ever losing its heart. For generations of families, entrepreneurs, and dreamers, Grove Bank & Trust has been a partner in that story — a reminder that true legacy is built not just on numbers, but on trust.

Modern Implant Dentistry and Advanced Laser Therapy: A New Standard of Care

Modern dentistry has entered an era defined by precision, predictability, and preservation. Today, restoring a smile is not simply about replacing what is missing — it is about protecting long-term health, maintaining facial harmony, and delivering results designed to last.

Yet replacement is only part of the conversation.

Dental implants are widely regarded as the gold standard for tooth replacement. Engineered from biocompatible materials and placed using advanced 3D digital planning, implants integrate with the jawbone to restore both function and aesthetics. This technology-guided approach allows treatment to be mapped before it begins, ensuring accuracy down to the millimeter and minimizing invasiveness.

The result is a restoration that feels stable, looks natural, and supports facial structure. Patients can chew comfortably, speak clearly, and smile with renewed confidence. With proper care, implants are designed for exceptional longevity and predictability.

Modern implant dentistry also offers versatility. A single missing tooth can be replaced without altering neighboring teeth. For patients missing multiple or all teeth, full-arch solutions such as All-on-X provide a fixed, stable alternative to traditional dentures — restoring strength, comfort, and refinement.

“Modern dentistry is not about choosing between saving or replacing teeth — it’s about knowing precisely when to do each.” Bone loss and gum disease are often misunderstood. Many patients assume that once bone loss is present, tooth removal is inevitable. In reality, advances in periodontal therapy have transformed that outlook. LANAP? (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is an FDA-cleared, minimally invasive laser treatment designed to address gum disease while supporting the body’s natural healing response. By targeting infection and reducing inflammation without cutting or sutures, LANAP often allows compromised teeth to be stabilized and preserved.

For many patients, this means maintaining their natural smile rather than immediately pursuing extraction and replacement.

The true evolution in dentistry lies in offering both options — preservation, when possible, replacement when necessary — guided by careful diagnosis and individualized planning.

Dr. Angela Berkovich, focuses on advanced implant and laser dentistry with a philosophy rooted in precision, conservation, and longterm oral health. For patients seeking modern solutions to restore or preserve their smile, a personalized consultation offers clarity, confidence, and a path forward tailored to their unique needs.

BIO:

Dr. Angela Berkovich, DMD is an implant and cosmetic dentist and the founder of Dentistry of South Florida. Natallia Platava & WEA: The Art of Connecting People and Opportunities

In an era of algorithms and instant digital decisions, Natallia Platava stands for something more profound: strategic vision and human intuition. As the founder of the Miamibased World Employment Agency (WEA), Natallia has transformed recruitment into a platform for precisioncrafted professional alliances across the U.S. and beyond.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF ALIGNMENT

WEA operates on what Natallia calls the “Philosophy of Alignment.” This isn't just about filling vacancies; it’s about the subtle synchronization of competencies, values, and cultural codes. Serving private families and the professional elite, the agency understands that at this level, the cost of error is high. Here, experience and a personalized touch are the ultimate deciders. WEA builds relationships the way reputations are made: consistently, thoughtfully, and for the long term.

BUSINESS AS A CURATED SPACE

The agency’s influence extends far beyond the office. Natallia regularly hosts elegant cultural and business evenings in Miami—intimate gatherings for those who value the quality of their connections. A key partner in this ecosystem is Hilton Hotel Aventura. At a recent event, WEA expressed special gratitude to Tatiana Pustovit, Hilton event manager, owner of Art US Nation Association, for her unwavering trust and professional collaboration, reinforcing a business environment where reputation and stability are the norm.

STORIES OF TRANSFORMATION

The true impact of WEA is measured in trajectories changed. Take Liudmila Dzhamilia, a professional dancer who, with WEA’s support, expanded her career to launch her own "Atmospheric Dance" club. Her studio has become a space for personal transformation—proving Natallia’s core belief that work should be a powerful tool for self-realization.

BEYOND RECRUITMENT

For Natallia Platava, business is the architecture of opportunity. In an automated world, she proves that the most valuable asset is still the personal connection—ethical, strategic, and deeply human. WEA is more than an agency; it is the bridge between ambition and reality. Success is always a union of people. And great unions never happen by chance.

Sophia’s Pharmacy: The Beauty Of Personalized Care

Differentiating themselves from the American pharmacy model, Sophia’s is the equivalent of Neiman Marcus with a dedicated RX team who operate like a concierge service - always available and delivered to your door.

There are few things in life that truly surprise me anymore, especially in the realm of healthcare. Between long lines, endless phone calls, and the impersonal hum of chain pharmacies, I had resigned myself to the idea that modern medicine had lost its touch. That was, until I discovered Sophia’s Pharmacy—a true gem in Aventura, just a short drive from Golden Beach that has redefined what pharmacy care should feel like.

A LOVE STORY AND A LEAP OF FAITH

The story behind Sophia’s is as heartfelt as the service itself. Corrine and Jonathan met while studying at Long Island University in Brooklyn, both graduating in 2020 with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Their connection—both personal and professional—was instant, and after marrying and starting a family, they decided to move from New York to Florida.

It was there, as young parents navigating the chaos of life with their baby son, that inspiration struck. One evening, after a grueling visit to urgent care and a long waiting wait at a chain pharmacy (which ultimately didn’t accept their insurance), Corrine remembers standing in line, holding her sick baby, thinking, «This can’t be how healthcare is supposed to feel.» That moment changed everything. The couple began studying for their Florida Pharmacy Law exam, determined to bring a new kind of pharmacy experience to their community—one centered on compassion, connection, and concierge-level service. They named the business after their daughter, Sophia, whose name means wisdom in Greek. «We wanted her name to carry meaning,» Corrine shares. «We hope she grows up to be sophisticated, full of wisdom and skill—just like what we want Sophia’s Pharmacy to represent.»

Pharmacy

BRINGING BACK THE ‘OLD REGIME’— WITH A MODERN TWIST

When I first walked into Sophia’s Pharmacy, I was instantly struck by the atmosphere. Gone were the harsh lights and sterile aisles I’d come to associate with pharmacies. Instead, I found myself in a serene, elegant space that felt like a cross between a European apothecary and a luxury skincare boutique. The scent of fine fragrance lingered in the air, the shelves were lined with beautifully curated wellness and beauty products, and every detail—from the marble counters to the soft lighting—invited calm. Beyond the traditional pharmacy experience, Sophia’s also houses a discreet, hidden spa — a serene wellness sanctuary offering customized treatments tailored to your unique needs. Each service is thoughtfully designed to support both beauty and overall well-being, creating a seamless integration between medical insight and aesthetic care. It’s a private retreat where science-backed treatments meet luxury and intention.

Corrine says that her goal was to bring back what pharmacy once was: personal. «Years ago,» she told me, «You knew your pharmacist by name. They knew your family, your story, your life. Somewhere along the way, that connection disappeared. At Sophia’s, we’re bringing that back.» Indeed, their approach feels refreshingly personal. They know their patients. They text to check in. They deliver by hand. And they make time to educate clients about their prescriptions, supplements, and skincare choices. It’s an elevated version of what our grandparents experienced—only this time, there’s the entire Natura Bissé on the shelves - alongside Augustinus Bader and other likeminded, effective brands. Part of what makes Sophia’s so distinctive is how effortlessly it merges clinical care with luxury wellness. Corrine and Jonathan have created a space where you can fill a prescription, consult about your supplements, and walk out with an armful of Augustinus Bader or SkinCeuticals—all in one visit. «Pharmacy should be more than counting pills,» Corrine says. «It should be about treating the whole person—inside and out.» Their skincare and wellness selection rivals that of highend European boutiques, featuring cult-favorite lines such as Parfums de Marly, JLab, Natura Bissé, Cellcosmet, and SkinCeuticals. But what’s even more impressive is how intentional the curation is. Corrine describes the process like a sommelier choosing wine: every brand is selected for its clinical integrity, luxurious sensorial experience, and proven results. And she doesn’t stock anything she doesn’t believe in. «I test everything myself,» she laughs. «When we opened, I started with vitamins and supplements because I only wanted to offer what I truly trusted. That’s still our standard—if it’s not exceptional, it’s not on our shelves.»

A FAMILY PHILOSOPHY

Sophia’s Pharmacy is more than a business—it’s an expression of Corrine and Jonathan’s family values. Both come from homes where hard work, integrity, and service were guiding principles. Their pharmacy reflects that ethos: warm, authentic,

and committed to community. Even their expansion plans are guided by purpose. «We’ll grow,» Corrine says, «but only when it feels right. It has to stay personal.»

THE SOPHIA’S EXPERIENCE

Today, when I think about pharmacy care, I think about Sophia’s. I think about Corrine’s bright, reassuring voice, the thoughtful text updates, the luxurious packaging, and the feeling that someone is truly looking out for my family’s health. Sophia’s Pharmacy isn’t just a pharmacy. It’s a philosophy—one rooted in empathy, excellence, and elegance. It’s a reminder that medicine doesn’t have to be cold or transactional. It can be nurturing, human, and even beautiful. For me, it has been life changing. Because when care feels this good, healing happens on every level.

LOOKING FOR THE BETTER, HEALTHIER EDUCATION OPTION?

THEN YOU SHOULD COME TO THE RIGHT SCHOOL...

Allow me to introduce you to NORTH MIAMI BEACH ACADEMY, a unique educational and training model. And please trust me, because I am not only an amateur tennis player, but also a sports journalist with more than 45 years of experience, but more importantly, I am the father of a man who trained at several tennis academies in Florida, graduated from one of them, and played Division I tennis for Valparaiso University and the University of Wisconsin. I know exactly how academies differ in terms of tennis training and academic programs. NORTH MIAMI BEACH ACADEMY stands out from most others academies, and the difference is that here they develop personality, academically, athletically, and instill strict discipline and daily routine blended with expert methodology, is the connecting link for interacting with each student. This is where the learning process begins and grows.

At NMBA they firmly believe that an individual approach to each student (and they teach kids from 2nd to 12th grade), skill development, and competitiveness will lead children to achieve high goals in life. Program Director Sara Gauvreau told me all about it and showed me around, and I can assure you that after graduating from NORTH MIAMI BEACH ACADEMY, your children will not only receive an excellent education and be able to enroll in some of the best universities in the United States, but they will also remain people who strive for high achievements. Over the past 10 years, North Miami Beach Academy has helped many students gain admission to colleges and universities across the United States, and many of them have received athletic and academic scholarships.

The tennis training methodology uses a periodization table for peak periods and includes special sports training, fitness and conditioning, mental coaching, and instills proper nutrition skills.

The academy accepts Step Up For Students Scholarships (a non-profit organization that manages this nonincome-based scholarship program in Florida). If your child is a legal resident of the state, they may apply for a scholarship (for this and all additional questions, please refer to the academy’s website and call (305) 974-2582).

It is important to note that classes are small in size, which guarantees that teachers can give each student individual attention. The student’s day begins at 7:30 a.m. (beginners leave at 3:30 p.m., while competitive players continue until 5:30 p.m.) and consists of academic classes, tennis training, and fitness. Of course, there is a 45-minute lunch break and breaks between different types of classes. The academy is accredited by

COGNIA (a non-profit, non-governmental organization that serves more than 36,000 educational institutions worldwide, with a total of 25 million students and 1 million teachers in 80 countries). NMBA provides student visas for foreign students who enroll in full-time programs. At NMBA there is a cheerful atmosphere of concentration. The coaches and teachers are demanding and interested in their students’ success. The workload is heavy, but training and studying here is enjoyable because of the joyful, almost family-like atmosphere. Incidentally, the program offers courses for advanced students, honors students, and AP courses. The academic program also appeals to athletes from other sports, for example there is a group of advanced level gymnasts from IK Gymnastics who attends the school because of the possibility of a flexible schedule, which is ideal for their competitive travels. Some families choose NMBA for the healthy lifestyle approach it offers, sport and study, which can be beneficial

to all children. The thought of large classrooms and sedentary days can be a concern for some families. Call, come and find out more, or try it for yourself: NMBA offers free trial sessions. You can

...They say it’s best not to have any regrets. That may be true, but I still regret that tennis only came into my life after I turned thirty. Because it’s not just a sport. It’s a lifesaver. Tennis has many health benefits and helps adults of all ages stay healthy and fit, as well as enjoy competitive social activity. Maybe you think age is a hindrance? But global experience shows that it’s never too late to learn tennisnot at twenty, not at thirty, not at fifty. Schoolchildren and academics, students and leading designers, builders, artists, businesspeople, and doctors all enthusiastically and selflessly exchange shots on the court. And NORTH MIAMI BEACH ACADEMY has wonderful programs for adults (for example, from November to April, I play on excellent clay courts with our friendly group, almost like a family, of people aged 40 to 85, and try to beat those 85-year-olds!).

The atmosphere at the North Miami Beach Tennis Center is unique and welcoming.

Let your kids ace it at NMBA!

Oh, I almost forgot: NMBA offers tennis courses for adults and private lessons, as well as an introductory after-school program for children ages 5 and the seasonal camps - at spring, summer and winter.
