1st Priority From Pge 1A ––––––––––––––––––––– can spread to big damage, it's 1st Priority's job to eliminate it. The first step in eliminating mold is to do a professional inspection. Just as they do to find water leaks, 1st Priority technicians will use non-invasive thermal imaging to find areas of moisture that are hospitable to spores. To make sure they identify the existence of mold at the earliest stage possible, they will do three types of testing: air quality, wall cavity, and tape samplings. The samples are sent to an outside lab, and results are usually returned within 48 hours. IT'S BETTER TO HIRE 1ST PRIORITY It doesn’t take much time for a water leak to do extensive damage to your home or business. In fact, it can happen just hours after the leak occurs. 1st Priority a licensed building contractor for mold remediation and mold assessment has 10 years experience in the industry. They can use that experience to find the leak and fix it quickly, using the latest. state-of-the-art technology. Its noninvasive, infrared thermal imaging equipment can detect the precise location of the leak within a wall or up to 12 feet underground, greatly minimizing the area of wall or floor that needs to be removed. When the leak is fixed, technicians will fully restore the area to its original condition using all new materials. To save the home and business owner time and money, 1st Priority will work directly with your insurance company. Its professional staff will identify and assess both visible and hidden damage, submit all bills, and take care of any negotiations. There is no outof-pocket cost for the home or business owner. This helps you to avoid headaches now as well as in the future. The insurance company adjuster wants the best outcome for the insurance company, and may not actively seek out unseen damage that is behind walls or under floors. 1st Priority, however, advocates for

the homeowner, and its technicians will use their skills and experience to identify even the hidden damage that may cause problems in the future if it is not fixed. HOW DO LEAKS HAPPEN? Some leaks happen when water gets in from the outside, such as after a heavy rain or flood. Others can occur within your plumbing system and will unnecessarily increase your water bill. Determining whether you have this kind of leak is easy. Simply read your water meter just before leaving the house for several hours or going to sleep for the night. When you return, or wake in the morning, read the meter again. If no leak exists, the readings should be about the same. If the second reading is higher, you probably have a leak that is driving up your costs and may be causing unseen damage. If you suspect you have a leak, don’t wait. Call 1st Priority Restoration immediately to fix the problem. IS MOLD MAKING YOUR HOME TOXIC? 1st Priority specializes in ridding your home or business of mold that may be making the air you breathe toxic. When mold exists, it can exacerbate symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments, as well as cause coughing, sneezing, and headaches. And some people are highly allergic to it. WHAT IS MOLD? Mold is a living organism that can grow very rapidly under certain conditions. It reproduces by emitting microscopic spores that float through the air and land on damp surfaces, where they begin to feed on the material on which they are resting. Thousands of different kinds of molds exist, and some are known allergens. A few produce harmful chemicals called mycotoxins that can seriously affect many parts of the body. But all molds, in the right conditions and in high enough concentrations, can adversely affect human health. Getting rid of mold is

vital to keeping the environment in your home or business a healthy one. GOODBYE, MOLD Once technicians determine that mold exists, they remove it completely. It is not enough to kill it, because injurious chemicals and proteins can remain even in dead mold. Permeable material such as drywall must be treated or replaced. Because spores are released during the removal process, 1st Priority Restoration uses an air scrubber to keep the spores from settling. Then, a special filtering system effectively traps the spores to clean furniture and other surfaces. After the removal is finished, 1st Priority technicians restore the area to its original condition with new materials. OZONE TREATMENT If your home or business has an unpleasant odor due to smoke damage or biohazards, 1st Priority Restoration can help. Technicians will use a highly effective ozone treatment to eliminate the odor and restore the air quality. 1st PRIORITY RESTORATION: They Will Take care of The Problem From A to Z 1st Priority Restoration does it all. Whatever the source of damage or contamination to your home or business might be, 1st Priority can identify it, repair it, sanitize it and restore the area to its original condition, all while working directly with your insurance company. The company provides start-to-finish, 24-hour service 365 days a year for repairing water, fire and smoke or wind damage, leak detection and repair, and ozone treatment. Technicians follow through with debris clean-up, manipulation and packing, storage, cleaning and sanitizing, using the latest technology to restore your property and belongings to its pre-loss condition. To save you time, 1st Priority can work directly with your insurance company. 1st Priority Restoration provides the fast action and thorough service that are the most important factors

in reducing or eliminating structural damage. Disaster does not knock at the door—it

This year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration was historic in Hallandale Beach • It is important that we continue to share his life’s lessons with our children so future generations will not forget the struggles for equality and human rights By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - Once again, The Civic Association and the City of Hallandale Beach put together wonderful Martin Luther King Celebration. This year marked an important milestone in Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy. Fifty years ago, Dr. King was assassinated. It is important that we continue to share his life’s lessons with our children so future generations will not forget the struggles for equality and human rights that took place right here in our country. It has only been a few years since we moved the annual parade to Hallandale Beach Boulevard. I always like to think we have come a long way, but the journey is still not over. I always share the story that when I moved here the Confederate flag was still flying in Young Circle. I personally was horrified. Judge Ken Gottlieb worked and had it removed. That was only 23 years ago. We all need to remain vigilant and realize that there are still many hate groups out there.

After the parade, we all had an opportutiny to hear from Mayor Franklin Deese. He is the only American that has been a convicted felony and is a Mayor. He was elected four times in a city where the population is 80% white. He was lucky that in North Carolina he was able to restore his voting rights. His message was not only about overcoming his struggles as a young adult, but how it changed him into becoming successful adult. He also spoke about how backwards our penal system is and how it perpetuates incarceration not rehabilitation. He has joined with other in N.C. on a campaign to “Stop the Box”. The goal is to eliminate the check off box if you were a felon. He argues that this will allow many rehabilitated prisoners at a minimum the opportunity to be interviewed for a job. He does reinforce that many people in prison do belong there but when is their debt to society paid off? LANE CLOSURES AND

THE FUTURE OF TRAFFIC Hallandale Beach has been suffering through the lane closures on West Hallandale Beach Boulevard due to the I95 Express project. It has been confirmed that the project is moving on time and completion date for work on the over pass is to be completed in April. Once completed we will have access to jump on to the express lanes from our city. We also recently found out another project is being planned by FDOT that will impact our city. Due to increased freight traffic on the FEC FDOT and Miami Dade have been evaluating RR crossings. During the evaluation they have looked at Dixie Highway and 206th Street. In Hallandale Beach this road becomes County Line Road. Our city is very concerned about this project since it will have a direct impact on our Southwest neighborhood. We invited FDOT to come to our City Commission meeting and provide an update of what is called the Proj-

Within the study there are three alternatives for the RR Crossing. The main concern is over the proposed alternative for grade elevations at Dixie Highway. This means in lay terms raising the highway with an over pass which is similar to what was done at Ives Dairy and US1. Our city Commission did not take action but shared concerns over the impact to our neighborhood. I had asked and will continue to ask

that rather than elevating the road they look to under-grounding it. I also asked that they take a larger look and address Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Dixie to invest in upgrades. This intersection is obviously much more traveled then 215 We also agreed that one portion of the project was something we felt worthy to peruse. The third alternative provides a connection from NE 215th Street to Dixie Highway. This is the road just south of Gulfstream Park. To connect this road would eliminate some traffic off of US1 and add a better connect to Dixie and Ives Dairy.

Since the PD&E study so taking place it is a good time for all our residents to particulate in the process. For information on the project you can visit or website at or email Dat Huynh Project Engineer dat.huynh@dot.state.fl. us. From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––– ments, Mardi Gras Racing, Casino & Flea Market has stepped it up the past two weeks. What has been going on since Jan. 9 and running through this Sunday, Jan. 26, has been a carnival. One of those popcorn and funnel cake selling and ferris wheel riding places that you enjoyed so much as a kid. This world of haunted houses, breath-taking rides basket shooting and a live tiger and lion show is all designed to keep the traffic flowing into our many communities. While things began slowly, word got out and what was a slower time began to get busy - and despite the cooler temperatures, it made for an affordable family outing. "To tell the truth, we kind of stumbled on this tonight as we were riding north on US 1," said Marta Carty of Hollywood. "We were actually on our way back from Aventura Mall and the kids saw the ferris wheel." Carty was amazed at how the carnivals of today bring back that special time in all of our lives. When we were younger and looked forward to riding the rides and playing the many games, often winning some good prizes. The days of those carnival hawkers trying to get you to part with that $5 bill in the name

of winning your girlfriend or family member a stuffed animal or an NBA team jersey is something that still exists. They are in this to make money, but also provide a time that many of us still hold close to us. "This is a real carnival," Carty smiled. "The lions and tiger show was crazy. Here we were like 10 feet from where a net separated us. It was great to see how they respond to their handlers and the crowds. I was impressed." North Miami Beach High senior Ramsey Harriott came out with some of his friends because they were given complimentary admission passes. When they were inside, they had the chance to pick which rides they would purchase. "The 'Himalaya' was a great ride," Harriott said. "But I think it was the overall experience of having a street event that brought me back to my Jamaica roots. We have festivals like this back home, so it was good to see." It has been said all along that if you make it appealing for people to come into your city, the rest of the community benefits - in a major way. What many of our larger local businesses have done whether it's in Hollywood, Dania Beach, Hallandale Beach, Aventura, North Miami Beach - or anywhere in Miami-Dade County is to give people a reason to come to their community.

With a carnival that is also going on where casino gaming, greyhound racing and a flea market attempt to bring in their own crowds, this winter festival has a certain yearly ring to it. With the first class carnival rides, food and entertainment that it provides, the event can only get better as more and more people experience it. "An event like this is great to have," said Michael Berrios of Hallandale Beach. "I had a very good time out here. A little bit windy, but a great time."

FINAL DAYS THIS WEEKEND The final three days of the event this weekend promise to attract the largest crowds with free admission, free parking, free entertainment and several exciting prizes to be won and rides to be tested out. The live lion and tiger show is a must see for those who love to watch these very content animals play and live. If you are someone who loves the food that is associated with carnivals, this is indeed your place. From the traditional ice creams and hamburgers to several other 'walk around with foods', this is another reason to come to the carnival. Mardi Gras Casino is located at 831 N. Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach.

Hollywood Realtor pursues passion for Travel and Tourism as New Executive Director of Florida Superior Small Lodging Association HOLLYWOOD - Hollywood resident, Realtor, travel consultant and former innkeeper Scott Rivelli is a longtime champion of the city he calls home. But as the new executive director of the Florida Superior Small Lodging Association (FSSLA), he's able to make an even greater impact on Hollywood's position as a sought-after tourist destination. Rivelli took over the helm of the FSSLA, a nonprofit association of independently owned and managed properties with fewer than 50 rooms, in December. Florida offers some 180 boutique hotels, seaside cottages, inns, and bed and breakfasts. Superior Small Lodging properties must meet high quality and service standards during a rigorous annual inspection that addresses cleanliness, furnishings and amenities. Hollywood boasts 30 SSLs, nearly half of the 62 in Broward County. Nineteen Hollywood properties also received the prestigious 2013 White Glove Award for their perfect housekeeping score during the annual inspection performed by an outside company. For 13 years Rivelli owned and managed one of those award-winning properties, the Ocean Inn, which he bought in 2000. "I purchased the Ocean Inn as a simple real estate investment to flip. I never intended on becoming an innkeeper," he recalled. "When the economy changed, I was forced to take a more active role in managing my hotel. Eventually it became a labor of love as my passion for travel and tourism continued to evolve." Under Rivelli's management, the Ocean Inn garnered more than 20 awards and was ranked in the top three among 68 Hollywood hotels on leading consumer review travel website TripAdvisor. "I sold the Ocean Inn in March 2013 and was working my way back to my full-time real estate career, but tourism kept calling me back," said Rivelli, who was recently asked to serve on the Hollywood CRA's new Tourism Advisory Committee and cochairs the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce's Tourism and Entertainment Committee. When the retiring FSSLA executive director asked him to submit his resume to the board for consideration, Rivelli saw the ideal opportunity to combine his interests in the travel and tourism and real estate industries. "I realized this was a perfect balance between my two careers," he said. "I can continue my career in travel and tourism while helping to educate and grow the Florida Superior Lodging Association brand though real estate consulting and acquisition opportunities."

Mana Bakery brings fresh and natural ingredients to your table • Area's newest strictly Kosher bakery plays a delicious tune with locals

NORTH MIAMI BEACH - Avi Bitton had this idea to bring strictly Kosher fresh baked cookies, pies, cakes and other delicious treats to a community that was looking for that traditional touch. Mission accomplished! From the delicious aromas to the smiling faces as you walk into this North Miami Beach location, Mana Bakery has been able to bring back what has always been fond memories to a waiting throng of consumers. With strong roots in Montreal - where the breads are specially imported from Mana Bakery has been able to offer customers a variety that includes more than 80 products nearly all made on premises with those standards that Parve, Yoshon and Pas Yisroel products have long been known for. "When we opened in the middle of December, we did it with the idea of giving the residents of North Miami Beach, Aventura and all of North Miami-Dade and South Broward exactly what they were looking for," Avi said. "When you come in here and have a pastry or a croissant with some freshly brewed coffee, it's an experience you will talk about." While the baking goes on throughout the day and different aromas find their way through this quaint bakery, customers are more than pleased to find baked goods that are delicious and good for you. In a time where heavy products with many preservatives make us all feel not so healthy, Mana has found a way to give you something good tasting - and good for you. "We have three rules that we follow here," Avi pointed

With no defined kitchen in the back of the bakery, everything you see when walking in is done right before your eyes.

ented and trained bakers do what they do best. "When we create a fruit pie, it's real strawberries, lemons and apples we are using," Avi said. Shen Yun Performing Arts returns to Broward Center with a new phenomenal awesome production By Eleanor Hannan Shen Yun is a performing arts and entertainment company that performs classical Chinese dance, ethnic, folk dance, story-based dance, passed down through thousands of years, using extensive acrobatic and tumbling techniques, with a philharmonic orchestral accompaniment, using several traditional Chinese instruments. In addition to solo performers, consisting of approximately 60 male and female dancers. Shen Yun translates into: “The Beauty of Divine Beings Dancing” and was founded in 2006 with the mission of reviving 5,000 years of Chinese culture. Each year, Shen Yun creates original productions lasting two and one half hours including operatic singing. Shen Yun dancers perform wearing intricate costumes intended to imitate the various authenticity of dress worn by Chinese court dancers, soldiers and other characters from classic stories. The group not only entertains, but deeply educates and inspires as the animated backdrops transport the audience into another world. The beauty of this performance must be seen. Their music and songs give voice to hopes that have shaped Chinese culture for centuries. Shen Yun will take center stage at the Broward Center from January 31st

BASED ON THE FILM OF THE SAME NAME "ONCE" NOW A MUSICAL STAGE ADAPTATION APPEARS LIVE AT ARSHT CENTER: Winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards including: "Best Musical, "Once" is an truly original Broadway experience. The show features an impressive ensemble of actors/musicians who play their own instruments on stage. "Once" tells the enchanting tale of a young Dublin street musician who is about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting

love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music grows to powerful new heights. Their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance and is emotionally breathtaking from the very first note. All of the actors are extremely talented. In addition to singing and playing instruments, they also move furniture about the stage. The story tells of a thirty-ish young man named Guy, who sings in a local bar. He is singing a love ballad while playing his guitar, as he is putting his guitar away for the night and is about to leave without it, a young Czech girl, a pianist, who has been listening to him sing, approaches and asks him several personal questions about his songs. She discovers the songs were written for a girlfriend he no longer sees and is giving up on his music because of the

painful memories. Eventfully, they become better acquainted and seem to like each other. She offers to play piano for him causing him to reluctantly pick up his guitar and they play his songs together ending in a very interesting situation that shows how wonderful transporting emotions can be. This wonderful musical "Once" is the most romantic show seen on stage in quite awhile, winner of more than seventeen other awards and opens at the Arsht Center in the Ziff Opera House, February 4th through February 9th, 2014, evenings at 8 p.m., Sunday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets start from $26 to $67 at the box office located at 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami. INFELD TO HOLLYWOOD: Jerry Seinfeld is known for specializing in observational humor, often focusing on personal relationships and uncomfortable social obligations. In 2005, Comedy Central ranked Jerry Seinfeld 12th out of 100 as the greatest comedians in its five-part special “The Greatest Standups of All Time.” Seinfeld developed an interest in stand-up comedy after brief attempts in college productions. In an HBO special in 1979, he had a small recurring role on the Benson sitcom as: “Frankie,” a mail delivery boy who had comedy routines that no one wanted to hear, but he was abruptly fired from the show due to creative differences. In May 1981, Seinfeld made a highly successful appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” He impressed Carson and the audience that lead up to a regular appearance on that show and others, including: “Late Night with

David Letterman.” Seinfeld created “The Seinfeld Chronicles” with Larry David for NBC which was later renamed “Seinfeld.” By its fourth season, it had become the most popular and successful sitcom on American television. Jerry is so funny, he uses the most amazing fresh and new material that includes everything from current events to ordinary life crisis that keeps his audience laughing hysterically. In 2013, Seinfeld was nominated for a “Primetime Emmy Award.” Tickets are $79 to $169 for these outstanding performances on January 31st and February 1st, 2014 at 8 p.m. at Hard Rock Live, located on State Road 7 (441), in Hollywood. Rare Earth comes to Hollywood on Feb. 15

Hooray for Hollywood Public Schools Film Festival & Awards

• Films entered in the festival are produced by Hollywood’s public school students and showcase the many outstanding features of Hollywood’s local schools

HOLLYWOOD - Get ready! Don’t miss classic rockers RARE EARTH live in concert in a free, all-ages show in Downtown Hollywood. Enjoy the legendary RARE EARTH performing timeless classics like "I Just Want to Celebrate," "Get Ready," “Born to Wander,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” and “Hey, Big Brother” in a free concert under the stars in the Hollywood ArtsPark. The show gets underway at 8 p.m. with South Florida blues-rock favorites Iko-Iko. Lawn seating, bring your beach chair or a blanket. Invite the entire family, admission is free. About RARE EARTH Rare Earth was signed to Motown in 1969 and released its debut album in 1970 to immediate success. The Detroit-based band’s signature sound, a highenergy mixture of rock, R&B, funk, jazz and Latin elements, landed them on the Billboard pop charts and cemented their reputation as one of the era’s most exciting and innovative American bands. Rare Earth had a number of multiplatinum Top 40 hits in the ‘70s, including covers of The Temptations' "(I Know) I'm Losing You" and "Get Ready." Both were more successful than The Temptations' originals, with "Get Ready" being their biggest hit, peaking at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Other hits were "I Just Want to Celebrate," which peaked at #7 on the pop charts, and "Hey, Big Brother," which peaked at #19. Rare Earth has shared the stage with Jimi Hendrix, Sly & The Family Stone, Ike & Tina Turner, Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers and Earth, Wind & Fire. In 1974, they performed at the California Jam music festival in Ontario, California. The festival attracted over 250,000 people, and the band appeared alongside Black Sabbath, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Deep Purple, Earth, Wind & Fire, Seals and Crofts, and The Eagles. Portions of the show were broadcast on ABC Television in the U.S., exposing the band to a wider audience. Their songs have appeared in countless films and commercials, and their sound has influenced generations of musicians. About IKO-IKO More than 30 years ago, Iko-Iko founder Graham Wood Drout had the idea that bringing extremely diverse musicians together would create something new that was greater than the sum of its parts. Today, his vast catalog of songs & the longevity of South Florida’s favorite blues-rock band, IKO IKO, show that this formula is extremely effective for his signature sound. That sound blends Drout's roots in Texas, Brazil, New Jersey & Miami with those of his band mates – described by The San Diego Tribune as "an eclectic mix of southern musical traditions" – creating a backbeat–driven powerhouse of blues, rock, and Gulf Coast Americana to create what Drout describes as "Urban Swamp Blues." With performances in the films Cape Fear and Contact as well as the original production of Jimmy Buffett's Don't Stop the Carnival, along with countless collaborations with some of music's legends (including Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters & many more), the band continues to deliver great shows and outstanding music. This show will feature very special guest Nicole Yarling on violin. For more info, please contact Manuel Pila at 954-924-2980 or

HOLLYWOOD - The City of Hollywood’s Education Advisory Committee is hosting the first ever “Hooray for Hollywood” Public Schools Film Festival & Awards Ceremony. Films entered in the festival are produced by Hollywood’s public school students and showcase the many outstanding features of Hollywood’s local schools. The student films highlight each individual school’s special programs, extracurricular activities and include student and teacher interviews and campus tours. Each film is judged by multiple, local media industry professionals who screen each film in advance. Films are judged on clarity of message, creativity, and presentation of school features. The concept for the film festival was developed by Mayor Peter Bober and presented to the City’s Education Advisory Committee. Mayor Bober wanted each of the schools to have a video that could help market their innovative and successful programs. As competition for public education funding increases, traditional public schools face new challenges in spreading the word about the qual-

Avoid Joint Replacement Surgery with the MAP PEMF Therapy - recommended by Dr. Oz LIMITED TIME SPECIAL: $55 Call for the appointment and save on the regular $150.00 price. "Dr. OZ does not endorse and Dr. OZ is not affiliated with Joint and Muscle Treatment Center or any of our products. PEMF technology was a topic on one of DR. OZ TV shows. Chronic pain is debilitating, and quickly erodes quality of life. Now, a new medical technology allows many patients suffering from back or joint pain to avoid surgery and return to the activities and lifestyles they enjoyed previously. Map PEMF Therapy is a painless noninvasive method of delivering a pioneering new branch of an invisible treatment that provides a revolutionary cure you were waiting for. A rapid acceleration which recovers and restores a painfree lifestyle. creases bone density. It has been used by thousands of people, including many professional athletes. MAP PEMF Therapy can help patients avoid hip and knee replacements and provide rapid alternative recov-

ery methods. It is now available at the Joint and Muscle Treatement Center in Hallandale Beach. HOW IT WORKS If you have ever held two magnets in your hands, tried

to force them together, and felt a resistance between them, then you have experienced a magnetic field. PEMF stands for Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Fields, which are widely used these days to improve circulation and cell metabolism. The body can become accustomed to nonmoving (or static) magnetic fields, which are generally unable to deeply penetrate the body. A pulsed electromagnetic field, however, is quite dynamic, is able to penetrate all the way through the body, and creates a cascade of effects within the body. The MAP PEMF Therapy uses moving magnets creating an energy wave which changes the way your body copes with pain. The electrical magnets affect the nerve cells which are electrical cells and the magnetic fields

Electromagnetic Therapy Used for Insomnia You may have heard of electromagnetic therapy and the many health conditions that it claims to treat. From body pains, wound healing, aging, gastrointestinal illnesses and even cardiovascular conditions, more and more users are finding this alternative remedy as the most practical way to reduce pain and other discomforts without the use of any medication or even surgery. Electromagnetic therapy is non-invasive and has no side effects. There are no important indications before treatment other than wearing pacemakers or other electronic devices, which could damage when exposed to electromagnetic fields. It is one of the most efficient treatments for health conditions and even insomnia where 1 out of 10 adults currently suffer. Insomnia is more than not being able to sleep when you want to sleep; it may be a symptom of an even more devastating illness. Insomnia may also be due to anxiety, stress, depression and even due to other emotional and psychological concerns as well. Men and women, even children may suffer from insomnia and the need to find a better alternative treatment is the most important part of getting back on your sleepless nights. And with the dangerous and habit-forming effects of sleep medications and anti anxiety medications, electromagnetic therapy seems to be the best alternative treatment of all. Electromagnetic treatment when it comes to insomnia is not just stimulating a specific are of the body to excite nerve function. Patients are sometimes made to lie down on an electromagnetic mat that is meant to deliver pulse electromagnetic field therapy to the entire body as you sleep. Therapy is directed in balancing the body’s lost electromagnetic field by passing healthy pulses of electromagnetic energy through the entire body; this results in relaxation, stress relief and ultimately sleep. The magic power of sleep to renew the body’s numerous systems is yet to be discovered but it mostly gives the body time to recuperate and to possibly repair damaged or tired cells and tissues. Many experts believe that it is in sleep that most of the body’s hormones are released including the highly coveted growth hormones which teens need the most. Some also believe that it is in sleep that we plan and recuperate for the day ahead and when we dream of things that can inspire us for the future. There are certainly so many advantages of getting quality sleep; it is said that insomnia is not the less sleep that you get but is based on the amount of quality sleep that you get each time you try to sleep. Without sleep, we get cranky and uncooperative. Our body systems deteriorate and our ability to process information becomes poorer as our body tries its best to perform even with the lack of high quality sleep that it needs. Therefore, you should never underestimate sleep and how pulsed electromagnetic field therapy can do for you. It could be the medication-free alternative remedy you have been waiting for all these years! Joint and Muscle Treatment Center Pulse Electromagnetic

Therapy System is the first of its kind to use high tech transducers and fine over 40 pre set therapies for different health condi- tions including insomnia. HERBS TO HELP BEAT COLD AND FLU: There are many herbs that support the body when healing from an illness. We recommend below listed herbs: Nettle Leaf- Some natural doctors say this is the only herb needed /or illness treatment. It contains large amounts of vitamins and trace minerals and helps the body stay hydrated and remove toxins. In a tea with Red Raspberry Leaf, Alfalfa and Peppermint, it makes a powerful immune supporting and illness preventing remedy. Elderberry - Elderberry is well known /or supporting the body, especially during flu. Ginger - Ginger can greatly help with nausea and vomiting associated with the flu. It can also help with high fever and headache. Fresh ginger root can be steeped in boiling water to make a tea that is ve1y effective against sinus symptoms and congestion. Yarrow- Unsurpassed for flu and fever, and great for children. If used abundantly in tea or tincture at the beginning of an illness, it will usually shorten the illness to less than 24 hours. It is especially good for fevers as it induces perspiration and is great for all childhood type illnesses. It is naturally bitter, so it is often good to include peppermint and stevia leaf when making a tea. It is great for the liver and kidneys and supports the endocrine system. Chamomile - An absolute staple, especially for kids. Chamomile calms the nerves, helps children sleep better and reduces inflammation or fever. Soaking a chamomile tea bag in warm water and placing over an eye for 15 minutes every 2 hours will relieve pink eye in less than 24 hours. Chamomile tastes great and is easy to get kids to take. We use it in tea and tincture formula. It is also great /or regulating hormones and for the skin and can be used regularly for good sleep. Peppermint - Great for all digestive disturbances and for lowering fever. It can be used as a tea or tincture or rubbed on the skin to bring a high fever down. Catnip - A traditional cold and flu remedy, and a great herb for children. It helps induce sleep and settles the stomach .As a tincture or tea, it is a great herb for combating flu, cold or other illness. Heart attack proof: How to give yourself a cardiac makeover • A Mediterranean diet is ideal for heart health because it mainly consists of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fish and poultry (BPT) - It's not cancer, accidents or even old age - the leading cause of death in both men and women in the United States is cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attack and stroke. The good news is that this killer is highly preventable and controllable. By taking the right steps and working closely with your doctor, you can help prevent heart attack and stroke at any age. Bestselling author Dr. Michael Ozner, a boardcertified cardiologist, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and of the American Heart Association, and medical director of Wellness and Prevention at Baptist Health South Florida, knows when it comes to your heart, a proactive approach is best. Here are some of his top tips to help you start your own cardiac makeover: Eat the Mediterranean way A Mediterranean diet is ideal for heart health because it mainly consists of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fish and poultry. It is

low in saturated fat and contains more of the healthy fats that support heart function. When embracing a heart-healthy diet, it's also best to limit sugar, salt, red meat, trans fats or processed foods. Drink to heart health If you drink alcohol, the key is to do so in moderation. Consume no more than one drink for a woman and two drinks for a man in a 24-hour period. One drink equals 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of spirits. Catch heart health with fish oil Fish oil supplements are clinically proven to support cardiovascular health. Since the typical American doesn't consume enough omega3s from healthy food sources, a quality fish oil is the best option to ensure adequate intake. Remember, not all fish oil supplements are created equal - when shopping, get a certificate of analysis from the company and compare results for purity, freshness and potency. For example, Nordic

Naturals provides this information to customers, which includes guidelines from leading organizations on toxins, oxidation and heavy metals. Know your biomarkers Comprehensive blood tests by a health care professional reveal important biomarkers that can help you understand your heart health and where to make improvements. Biomarkers go beyond standard cholesterol tests to reveal hidden risks. When it comes to heart health, knowledge is power, and when you and your doctor know your biomarkers, you both can come up with an intervention and therapy plan to correct any abnormalities. Step up for heart health Make it your goal to walk 10,000 steps each day - the equivalent of 60 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise. Track your progress with a pedometer. It can become addictive to check that little device and see the number increase. If you're not very physically active, start slow and

work your way up. Start by walking at least 30 minutes per day and boost your steps by walking during your lunch break, taking the stairs rather than the elevator, and walking in place while watching TV. Melt away stress Stress is an enemy of heart health, but we all know that it's difficult to avoid stress completely. That's why it's important to understand your personal stress triggers and learn new ways to manage them. Retrain your mind to see daily stressors for what they are and learn to calm yourself down in healthy ways. Practice relax-

ation techniques like meditation, yoga, visualization, exercise and music. Breathing calmly is one of the simplest - yet best ways to reduce stress and stay in control. Don't forget to get adequate sleep each night too. Heart health should be a priority for every

American at any age, and with a few important tips from experts like Dr. Ozner, giving yourself a cardiac makeover has never been easier. For further information, read Dr. Ozner's bestselling book "Heart Attack Proof - A Six Week Cardiac Makeover For a Lifetime of Optimal Health."

Vitas innovative hospice of Miami-Dade earns re-accreditation from the National Institute for Jewish Hospice VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care, today announced that its Miami Dade County program has been reaccredited with the National Institute for Jewish Hospice (NIJH). VITAS of Miami Dade is the only hospice provider in South Florida that has earned this accreditation. NIJH accreditation, which VITAS first received in 2003, enables the company to receive on-site training designed to deepen its caregivers’ knowledge and understanding of Jewish religious rituals and the unique concerns of Jews at the end of life and during mourning. “We are proud to continue our affiliation with the National Institute for Jewish Hospice, which further evidences our longstanding commitment to provide the highest quality end-of-life care for Jewish patients and their families,” said Senior General Manager Maureen Knips,

with VITAS Innovative Hospice Care of Miami Dade. VITAS of Miami Dade was accredited during the NIJH Accreditation Conference in November. The event brought together professionals from hospices across the country along with others in related fields, including rabbis, administrators, chaplains of all faiths, psychologists, nurses, bereavement counselors and social workers. Sessions featured industry thought leaders such as Dr. Barry Kinzbrunner, VITAS Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, sharing the latest insights and information related to all aspects of hospice and the Jewish terminally ill. "We congratulate

VITAS Innovative Hospice Care of Miami Dade for earning this important accreditation, which enables it to be included in the database of Florida hospices where the National Institute for Jewish Hospice refers patients, families and rabbis seeking the best end-of-life care for the Jewish terminally ill,” said NIHJ Founder and President Rabbi Maurice Lamm. NIJH was established in 1985 to help alleviate suffering in serious and terminal illness. Its 52,000 members are comprised of business and professional leaders and a consortium of endowing foundations. It serves as a resource and educational center for hospices, hospitals,

Expert fitness and lifestyle skincare tips for a healthy and beautiful 2014 (BPT) - The new year is an ideal time to set goals surrounding personal health, fitness and wellness. As many goal-setters know, setting realistic resolutions that one can keep is a challenge, but taking a holistic approach to health - which includes everything from skincare and diet to working out and maintaining a balanced lifestyle ensures that resolutions turn into results. Trainer-to-the-stars, Kacy Duke, is one of the noted lifestyle and wellness experts on the Simple Advisory Board. Simple Skincare, a range of facial skincare products sensitive to skin needs, has the board to help women everywhere discover the benefits of a holistic approach to skincare. Duke and other boardmembers offer advice to help women care for their skin from the inside out. In many cases, what is left out is as important as what is put in when it comes to skincare products. All Simple products have no dyes, artificial perfumes or harsh chemicals that can upset skin. Duke touts the importance of living a holistic lifestyle and revving up one's workout routine to promote healthly skin. She shares her tips on easy ways to incorporate fitness - 365 days a year: CONSIDER (QUICK) CARDIO Even on the busiest of days, find 15 minutes to squeeze in a quick cardio session.-Heart-pumping cardio will not only burn calories, but can also boost energy and improve moods. Aim for high-intensity interval workouts that alternate periods of short, intense activity with quick recovery periods. Burpees are a great full body, high intensity exercise that can be done in any time crunch. THINK "OUTSIDE THE GYM" Whether it's a power walk in the park, sledding with the kids or other non-gym activities, a good amount of everyday movement promotes better blood flow and circulation. An active lifestyle also helps flush out cellular debris, which helps skin achieve a natural, healthy glow. PACK ACCORDINGLY Keeping a packed workout bag at home or at the office increases the likelihood of a trip to the gym. In addition to a change of clothes, athletic shoes and a water bottle, be sure to include Simple Oil Balancing Facial Wipes to cleanse and refresh skin post-workout. These convenient wipes, which also help control shine, work in just one step - so there is no rinsing required. BE BALANCED Simple encourages women to adopt a holistic approach to skincare and to look beyond their typical skincare routine. One can do this by pairing exercise with smart lifestyle choices, including a healthy diet and stress management techniques. This trio of activities not only impacts fitness goals, but also the look and feel of skin. For an energy boost, almonds are a great snack as they are rich in skin-loving vitamin E. To de-stress, try to sneak in five minutes of meditation a day. Many people find that a holistic and balanced approach to fitness is easier to sustain - ultimately ensuring that results and healthy habits are maintained throughout the year. For more tips on how to stay fit and maintain beautiful skin into the new year, as well as additional advice from Kacy Duke and other Simple Advisory Board members, visit-

Ask the Pharmacist: Understanding the dangers of low blood sugar (BPT) - The numbers are astounding nearly 400 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes and many patients may not realize they are at risk for a condition known

as hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is characterized as dangerously low blood sugar levels that could cause serious side-effects including hospitalization.

Ask Dr. Ron: 'Anorexia Nervosa' “I looked in the mirror, disgusted at myself. All I see is fat.., my arms, my thighs, my stomach. I hate the way I look. I’m going to throw up my food today so I don’t get any fatter.” The above narrative was given by a 28 year old woman, who is 5’6 tall, and weighs 95 pounds, she suffers from a potentially eating disorder called Anorexia Nervosa. Anorexia Nervosa afflicts between 0.5 – 1% of the US female population. The average age of onset is between 14 – 18 years old. Symptoms include abnormal low body weight, an intense fear of weight gain, and a disturbance in perception of the shape and size of one’s body. (DSM-IV). There are two subtypes of anorexia. The first occurs where weight loss is obtained through restriction of food, and extensive exercise. The second subtype occurs when weight loss is intended through self-induced vomiting, or by taking extreme doses of laxities, diuretics, or enemas {purging)…A very similar eating disorder called Bulimia Nervosa also exist s and presents with similar symptoms as Anorexia. The main difference is that women suffering from Bulimia tend to keep a relatively normal body weight. Studies on Anorexia have yielded some significant but small correlation to genetic disposition. There is a large body of evidence; however, that suggest culture and family dynamics play a more significant role. Anorexia is diagnosed much more commonly in industrialized western cultures, where the pressure of keeping a body image is hammered into the consciousness of women. As far as family influence concerned, many theorists believe this disorder is promoted by parents who are overly-enmeshed with their children, and do not allowed a healthy independence and individuation to take place between them and their children, indicative of a sickly co-dependence problem… Psychotherapy and drug therapy have been used to treat Anorexia. The results are mixed, with an estimation of 45% success rate, and a 25% partial success rate. All and all Anorexia should not be discounted as a less than serious problem. It’s ramifications can be deadly. For those of you in need of help in the South Florida area, you might want to try contacting specialized programs such as the Renfrew Center or the Rader program

Jay Belcher, is a specialist pharmacist in Express Scripts Diabetes Therapeutic Resource Center, and counsels patients who may not be aware of their risk for hypoglycemia. "Normally, our body has a natural response that is triggered when blood sugar levels drop below a normal level," says Belcher. "However, in some people with diabetes, this response is impaired. Certain medications used to treat diabetes, such as insulin, can also prevent glucose levels from easily returning to the normal range." There are certain people at increased risk for hypoglycemia including those with chronic diabetes and type 1 diabetes patients. "People with type 1 diabetes are at increased risk because they may not show early warning signs of low blood glucose, a condition called hypoglycemia unawareness," says Belcher."This means an individual no longer experiences early warning symptoms such as shakiness, sweating, anxiety and hunger; raising their risk of lapsing into severe hypoglycemia." It's important for all diabetes patients to remember that hypoglycemia is usually mild and can be treated quickly and easily by consuming a small amount of a glucose-rich food or drink. Unfortunately the condition can rapidly worsen causing

confusion, clumsiness or fainting; in fact, severe hypoglycemia can lead to seizures, coma and even death. Belcher offers the following tips to help prevent hypoglycemia: * Timing is everything: As with all medications, always take your diabetes medications in the recommended dosage and at the recommended times. Some diabetes medications can cause hypoglycemia. If you have questions, talk to your physician or specialist pharmacist who can help explain how and when to take these medications. * Watch what you eat: Following a meal plan is important for managing diabetes. Have enough food during each meal, avoid skipping meals and try healthy snacking (if recommended). If you are struggling with your food intake, work with a registered dietician who can help design a meal plan that fits your personal preferences and lifestyle. Eating right will help you manage your diabetes. * Exercise responsibly: Check your blood glucose before sports, exercise, or other physical activity and adjust medication if necessary. Plus, have a snack handy if your levels fall below 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Also, check blood glucose at regular intervals during extended periods of physical activity and periodically after physical activity and adjust medications if necessary.

* Limit alcohol consumption: Drinking alcoholic beverages, especially on an empty stomach, can cause hypoglycemia. Heavy drinking can be particularly dangerous for people taking insulin or medications that increase insulin production. Only consume

alcohol with a snack or meal. For more information and additional ways to become a more engaged and empowered patient, visit Express Scripts' Healthcare Insights blog at

Conversations with the City

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s memory was honored Monday with the annual parade, festival and the first Conversations with the City speaker series. Marshville, NC, Mayor Franklin Deese, second from right, was the inaugural speaker in the series. The charismatic mayor recounted how young impulsive men can make a mistake, recover and turn their lives around. In the case of Mayor Deese, he was convicted of robbery at age 18, served more than 20 years in prison, then turned his life around to become a pillar of the community and elected mayor. Meeting with Mayor Deese before his address are, from left, The Rev. Joe Johnson, Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Vice Mayor Alex Lewy, Mayor Joy Cooper, Mayor Deese, and Commissioner Anthony Sanders. (Photo courtesy City of Hallandale Beach Public Relations)

Showing off the new City logo Hallandale Beach Parks and Recreation Department was flying the City’s colors Monday at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Parade. Displaying the new City logo, the float was built by Parks and Recreation Department employees. The float won 3rd place in the float division. Quick work to repair a broken water main City of Hallandale Beach public works crews worked quickly to repair a broken water main Tuesday morning at NE 12th Avenue and NE 7th Street. The water line was broken by a construction crew working on the NE Drainage Improvement Project. The City worked with nearby communities to ensure the City had sufficient water and water pressure to keep the taps flowing. The crews removed and replaced the broken line in under four hours. Snack like a pro on game day • The team sports dietitians for the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos give snack tips (BPT) - Ted Harper, the team sports dietitian of the New England Patriots, and Bryan Snyder, the team nutrition manager for the Denver Broncos, may be rivals on the field, but when it comes to nutrition, they agree on one thing: pistachios are an ideal snack, whether you're a professional athlete or an armchair spectator. Harper and Snyder meticulously plan the diets of their teams to maximize each player's performance and recovery. The hard-hitting impact of weekly games and daily practices takes a toll on the players' bodies and their nutrition plan is designed to help them achieve specific performance and recovery goals. Both agree that, while the "Average Joe or Joann" doesn't take the same hits as a professional football player, he or she still needs a healthy diet to battle the stresses of everyday life. According to Harper and Snyder, a big part of one's nutrition plan should be mindful snacking habits. And are those

that still tastes good, but is full of healthy nutrients," says Harper. "Pistachios are one of the best recommendations I can make, because they're packed with many important nutrients and because they are very versatile. They lend themselves to just snack on in a pinch, or can be incorporated into the larger scheme of things like adding them into smoothies, topping off

choices helping or hurting your everyday performance? "One very easy way to improve your overall nutrition is to replace some or all (depending on how you want to tackle the situation; gradually or with full force) of your not-so-wise snacks like chips, cheese flavored crackers, sugary 'fruit snacks', pre-made snack cakes, cookies, soda, or candy, with something

oatmeal or sprinkled over a salad." Pistachios contain important nutrients, such as potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, which can contribute to a lower risk of heart disease. They're also a great snack to help with weight management and may help prevent hypertension and lower blood pressure, according to recent studies. People who eat a hand-

will satisfy and nourish, but for a dazzling game day snack, try this tasty pistachio recipe from Chef Robert Del Grande of Houston, Texas.

ful of nuts (including pistachios) daily have a 20 percent lower death rate, according to to a 30-year research project published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the largest study of its kind. In addition, other supporting studies showed people who eat nuts regularly tend to remain leaner due to an association with reduced waist sizes and less weight gain throughout the course of life, compared to individuals who don't regularly eat nuts. Snyder adds that pistachios are a great snack for anyone looking to lose a few pounds. "Not only do pistachios contain fiber and protein, but a study showed that people eat 41 percent less when they snack on in-shell pistachios compared to those who consumed shelled pistachios," he says. "Cracking open each nut slows down your consumption, and the empty shells serve as an unconscious visual reminder of how much you've eaten." "We're all concerned about our heart health and living a healthy, active lifestyle," says Snyder. "It's important that you make smart choices with your nutrition so you can support these goals." Roasted pistachios straight from the store

PISTACHIOS ROASTED WITH SMOKED CHILE TEQUILA AND LIMES 1/2 cup fresh lime juice 1/2 cup granulated sugar 4 large chipotle chiles canned in adobo: approximately 3 ounces 2 tablespoons adobo sauce: from the canned chipotle chiles 6 tablespoons silver tequila 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 pounds pistachio nuts in the shell Lime wedges Combine the lime juice, sugar, chipotle, adobo sauce, tequila and salt in a blender. Puree until smooth. Place the shellon pistachio nuts in a mixing bowl. Add the sauce and toss or stir until the sauce is fully incorporated into the nuts. Transfer the nuts to a sheet pan. Pre-heat an oven to 350 F. Toast the nuts for 5 to 10 minutes or until the nuts are nicely browned. Remove from the oven and cool to room temperature. To serve, place the pistachio nuts in a serving bowl. Sprinkle the nuts with salt and garnish with lime wedges.
