Winners Of The 2024/2025 Cappies Awards Announced

The spotlight was shining brightly on the exceptional achievements of students in high school theater from 28 public and private schools in Broward and Palm Beach counties during the 23rd Annual Cappies Awards, hosted by the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and South Florida Cappies, Inc.

For the second consecutive year, NSU University School in Davie took home the most honors receiving 11 awards, including Best Musical, for their production of Hadestown: Teen Edition. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach took home 10 awards for their production of Metamorphoses that included recognition as Best Play.

“All of the winners and nominees deserve a standing ovation for their dedication to excellence in the performing arts. Their participation will have a lasting impact well beyond high school,” said Jacob Aronin, Director of Education for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. “We must also recognize the commitment of theater educators and the unwavering support of parents and families, and we thank them for sharing their students with us. We are proud to once again host the newest generation of theater makers and storytellers.”

The Cappies Awards recognize the creativity, dedication and talent of students in various roles on the stage, behind the scenes or through their thoughtful words as critics. Student critics from participating schools nominate candidates after attending and writing reviews of productions from rival schools. The winners are then selected through a weighted peer-review voting process also conducted by students.

“I’m so proud of the volunteers who have made the Cappies program run for 23 years,” said South Florida Cappies Founder and Chair, Lori Sessions. “The student performances this year were outstanding. Contestants Shine Bright on Stage

Confidence, beauty and talent shined brighter than the sun when a special group of South Florida teens and young girls graced the stage for the 2025 Miss Arc Broward Pageant, presented by Princess Cruises, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale.

The annual pageant is a celebration of acceptance and dreams come true for remarkable young women with disabilities. While everyone was a winner for braving the spotlight before a cheering audience of more than 800 friends, family and community members, it was 13-year-old Gianna Gallagher of Coral Springs, crowned Miss Arc Broward, and sevenyear-old Emily Garcia of Pembroke Pines, crowned Little Miss Arc Broward, who stole the judges’ hearts. Gallagher performed “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story,” from “Hamilton,” and Garcia danced to “I Love to Read the Bible.”

“Whether someone has attended the pageant before or this is their first time, it is impossible to leave untouched by the sense of inclusion and belonging that defines this event,” said Julie Price, Arc Broward CEO. “More than a competition, the Miss Arc Broward pageant is a testament to the resilience, determination and courage of young women who inspire us with their journeys of self-discovery.”

Led by event co-chairs Natalie Glusman and Candace Kelley, the Miss Arc Broward Pageant culminates a season of special programs and events that provide a supportive environment through which young girls and teens with disabilities build confidence, self-esteem and lifelong friendships.

“The Miss Arc Broward Pageant shows contestants and audience members that anything is possible,” said Glusman, who also served as emcee. “We are so grateful for the support and encouragement of our sponsors, judges, teen ambassadors, cheering squads and community members who recognize the power of acceptance. Together, they help turn dreams into possibilities.”

In addition to raising awareness, proceeds from the Miss Arc Broward Pageant benefit Arc Broward’s continuum of services that provide transformative opportunities for children and adults with disabilities and other life challenges.

Highlights from the pageant included a special appearance by last year’s Little Miss Arc Broward winner, Mikayla Golka. The Florida Panthers hockey fan sparkled on stage with her bedazzled hockey stick and had the audience cheering. Before being crowned the newest Miss Arc Broward, Gallagher responded to the on-

stage interview question with a reminder that everyone has their own set of problems to overcome. “Whether it’s my mom’s laundry sitting on the couch or my dad forgetting things or me forgetting to do my homework…we have to keep in mind we all have our problems. We have to stand up and keep going,” she said.

In addition to Gallagher and Garcia, this year’s pageant contestants were: from Broward County, Hailey Acevedo, 16, Coral Springs; Halia Allen, 14, Hollywood; Samantha Bellot, 6, Pompano Beach; Zoe Burgess, 16, Coral Springs; Sophie Carriel, 6, Sunrise; Alyssa Custodio, 17, Coral Springs; Nola Schader, 16, Miramar; and Alessandra Soto, 17, Hollywood; and from Palm Beach County, Paritta Darncharnjitt, 17, West Palm Beach and Nevaeh Myers, 16, Jupiter.

Pageant contestants were matched with teen ambassadors who serve as mentors and advocates throughout the pageant season. More than 20 teen ambassadors represented a dozen high schools and middle schools across Broward County, including North Broward Preparatory School, St. Thomas Aquinas High School, NSU University School, Pompano Beach High School, Cooper City High School, Indian Ridge Middle

School, Forest Glen Middle School, Westglades Middle School, Pembroke Pines Charter High School and more. In addition to presenting sponsor Princess Cruises, the Miss Arc Broward Pageant is generously supported by Amazon, Arc Works Business Advisory Council, Banesco, Casbah Spa & Salon, Chateau Mar Golf Resort, Children’s Medical Services Health Plan, Cintas, Cosmix School of Makeup Artistry, ECR Graphics & Printing, Florida Girls Giving Back, Galleria Fort Lauderdale, Heather Holt Photo, Holland & Knight, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Macaroni Kid, Marsh McLennan Agency, Park Shore Pharmacon, Pompano Elks Club, Publix, Rebel Motor Company, Right Management/Aligned Solutions, Special Needs Group, Stiles, Sunshine Health, The Masucci Family, UKG, Universal Property, Wealth Family Protection Attorneys at Law and Wild, Felice & Partners. Trump’s Palantir-Powered Surveillance Is Turning America Into A Digital Prison

Call it what it is: a panopticon presidency.

President Trump’s plan to fuse government power with private surveillance tech to build a centralized, national citizen database is the final step in transforming America from a constitutional republic into a digital dictatorship armed with algorithms and powered by unaccountable, all-seeing artificial intelligence.

This isn’t about national security. It’s about control.

According to news reports, the Trump Administration is quietly collaborating with Palantir Technologies—the data-mining behemoth Co-Founded by billionaire Peter Thiel - to construct a centralized, government-wide surveillance system that would consolidate biometric, behavioral, and geolocation data into a single, weaponized database of Americans’ private information.

This isn’t about protecting freedom. It’s about rendering freedom obsolete.

What we’re witnessing is the transformation of America into a digital prison— one where the inmates are told we’re free while every move, every word, every thought is monitored, recorded, and used to assign a “threat score” that determines our place in the new hierarchy of obedience.

The tools enabling this all-seeing surveillance regime are not new, but under Trump’s direction, they are being fused together in unprecedented ways—with Palantir at the center of this digital dragnet.

Palantir, long criticized for its role in powering ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids and predictive policing, is now poised to become the brain of Trump’s surveillance regime.

Under the guise of “data integration” and “public safety,” this public-private partnership would deploy AI-enhanced systems to comb through everything from facial recognition feeds and license plate readers to Social Media posts and cellphone metadata—crossreferencing it all to assess a person’s risk to the state.

This isn’t speculative. It’s already happening.

Palantir’s Gotham platform, used by Law Enforcement and military agencies, has long been the backbone of real-time tracking and predictive analysis. Now, with Trump’s backing, it threatens to become the central nervous system of a digitally enforced authoritarianism.

As Palantir itself admits, its mission is to “augment human decision-making.” In practice, that means replacing probable cause with probability scores, courtrooms

with code, and due process with data pipelines.

In this new regime, your innocence will be irrelevant. The algorithm will decide who you are.

To understand the full danger of this moment, we must trace the long arc of government surveillance—from secret intelligence programs like COINTELPRO and the USA PATRIOT Act to today’s AIdriven digital dragnet embodied by data fusion centers.

Building on this foundation of historical abuse, the government has evolved its tactics, replacing human informants with algorithms and wiretaps with metadata, ushering in an age where pre-crime prediction is treated as prosecution.

Every smartphone ping, GPS coordinate, facial scan, online purchase, and Social Media like becomes part of your “digital exhaust”—a breadcrumb trail of metadata that the government now uses to build behavioral profiles. The FBI calls it “open-source intelligence.” But make no mistake: this is dragnet surveillance, and it is fundamentally unconstitutional.

Already, government agencies are mining this data to generate “pattern of life”

Constitution or the imposition of martial law.”

Trump’s embrace of Palantir, and its unparalleled ability to fuse surveillance feeds, Social Media metadata, public records, and AI-driven predictions, marks a dangerous evolution: a modern-day resurrection of Main Core, digitized, centralized, and fully automated.

What was once covert contingency planning is now becoming active policy.

What has emerged is a surveillance model more vast than anything dreamed up by past regimes—a digital panopticon in which every citizen is watched constantly, and every move is logged in a government database—not by humans, but by machines without conscience, without compassion, and without constitutional limits.

This is not science fiction. This is America—now.

As this technological tyranny expands, the foundational safeguards of the Constitution—those supposed bulwarks against arbitrary power—are quietly being nullified and its protections rendered meaningless.

What does the Fourth Amendment

Make no mistake: the government is not your friend in this. Neither are the corporations building this digital prison. They thrive on your data, your fear, and your silence.

To resist, we must first understand the weaponized AI tools being used against us.

We must demand transparency, enforce limits on data collection, ban predictive profiling, and dismantle the fusion centers feeding this machine.

We must treat AI surveillance with the same suspicion we once reserved for secret police. Because that is what AIpowered governance has become—secret police—only smarter, faster, and less accountable.

We don’t have much time.

Trump’s alliance with Palantir is a warning sign—not just of where we are, but of where we’re headed. A place where freedom is conditional, rights are revocable, and justice is decided by code.

The question is no longer whether we’re being watched—that is now a given—but whether we will meekly accept it. Will we dismantle this electronic concentration camp, or will we continue

analyses, flag “radicalized” individuals, and preemptively investigate those who merely share anti-government views.

This is not Law Enforcement. This is thought-policing by machine, the logical outcome of a system that criminalizes dissent and deputizes algorithms to do the targeting.

Nor is this entirely new.

For decades, the Federal Government has reportedly maintained a highly classified database known as Main Core, designed to collect and store information on Americans deemed potential threats to national security.

As Tim Shorrock reported for Salon, “One former intelligence official described Main Core as ‘an emergency internal security database system’ designed for use by the military in the event of a national catastrophe, a suspension of the

mean in a world where your entire life can be searched, sorted, and scored without a warrant? What does the First Amendment mean when expressing dissent gets you flagged as an extremist? What does the presumption of innocence mean when algorithms determine guilt?

The Constitution was written for humans—not for machine rule. It cannot compete with predictive analytics trained to bypass rights, sidestep accountability, and automate tyranny.

And that is the endgame: the automation of authoritarianism. An unblinking, AI-powered surveillance regime that renders due process obsolete and dissent fatal.

Still, it is not too late to resist—but doing so requires awareness, courage, and a willingness to confront the machinery of our own captivity.

AAA Warns: The “100 Deadliest Days” Have Begun

Eight people are killed each summer day in crashes involving a teen driver

The stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the 100 Deadliest Days for Teen Drivers—a period when crashes involving teen drivers spike, leading to tragic consequences. As teens hit the road with newfound freedom, many underestimate the dangers of distraction, speeding, and risky driving behaviors.

AAA’s review of crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows a 30% increase in deadly crashes involving teen drivers during summer compared to the rest of the year. On average, eight people lose their lives every day in a teen-related crash between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

“During the summer, teen drivers are on the road more often, usually with friends, which increases the risk of distraction and dangerous driving habits,” said Rachel Wilson, Director of Driver Education for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Many feel invincible behind the wheel, underestimating the dangers of speeding, distractions, and not wearing a seatbelt. But crashes hit different when they happen to you —and by then, it’s too late.”

Key Risk Factors for Teen Drivers

New teen drivers (ages 16-17) are nearly three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash compared to adults. The biggest contributing factors include:

Distraction: Nearly six out of ten teen crashes involve some form of distraction. Teen passengers are the leading distraction, followed by cell phones and infotainment systems.

Speeding: Almost 30% of fatal teen crashes involve excessive speed.

Driving with teen passengers: Studies show that the risk of a fatal crash increases with each additional teen passenger (NHTSA).

Failure to wear a seatbelt: Seatbelt use significantly reduces the likelihood of serious injury or death.

“Teens are inexperienced behind the wheel, and that lack of experience combined with risky behaviors is a dangerous mix,” said Mark Jenkins,

spokesman for for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “More teens die in car crashes during summer than any other season. Parents must take an active role in coaching their teens and reinforcing safe driving habits.”

AAA’s Advice for Parents

AAA urges parents to take proactive steps to ensure their teens are driving safely:

• Lead by example. Model good driving behavior by avoiding distractions, obeying speed limits, and always buckling up.

• Provide at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice. Give teens experience driving in diverse conditions—nighttime, inclement weather, highways, and busy streets.

• Teach defensive driving skills. Encourage teens to anticipate hazards, stay alert, and maintain a safe following distance.

• Create a parent-teen driving agreement. Establish clear rules about when, where, and with whom your teen can drive. Clearly outline the consequences for breaking the rules and rewards for driving safe.

AAA’s Driver Education Resources

AAA offers educational tools to help teens develop safe driving habits: How to Drive Online: A selfpaced 25-hour online course featuring interactive exercises, videos, and simulations.

“Crashes Hit Different’ This Summer

The key risk factors for teen drivers also happen to be the four leading contributors to traffic injuries and fatalities for all drivers. On average, someone is

buckling up and speed. This is the focus of AAA’s new “Crashes Hit Different” campaign. The Auto Club Group is partnering with roadway safety organizations, community groups, and drivers themselves in an effort to end these senseless tragedies.

About AAA - The Auto Club Group The Auto Club Group (ACG) is the second largest AAA club in North America with more than 13 million members across

14 U.S. states and two U.S. territories. ACG and its affiliates provide members with roadside assistance, insurance products, banking and financial services, travel offerings and more. ACG belongs to the national AAA federation with more than 65 million members in the United States and Canada. AAA’s mission is to protect and advance freedom of mobility and improve traffic safety. Role Revolution: Florida Managers Identify 3 AI Careers Expected To Boom Locally

While much of the public conversation around AI fixates on job loss, a quieterand more optimistic - shift is underway. Across the country, new career paths are emerging not in opposition to AI, but in tandem with it. These aren’t science fiction roles of the distant future; they’re already being hired for today, often far from Silicon Valley.

A survey of 3,003 decision makers by Snowfire, an adaptive decision intelligence AI platform for decision makers and executive leaders, pinpointed the specific AI-forward careers expected to boom locally in Florida.

The top 3 are:

1. Conversational AI Designer

With Florida’s massive tourism and hospitality sectors embracing automation, companies similar to Disney, Universal, and major cruise lines are turning to AI to elevate customer service. Conversational AI designers work behind the scenes to create virtual assistants, chatbot experiences, and voice interfaces that actually

Benny’s Buddies Tank & Tina

With the Florida Panther’s in the playoffs, we want to introduce you to two pets who are looking for homes and thanks to #9 Sam Bennett of the Florida Panthers – he has paid their adoption fee. Each time Sam scores a goal, he underwrites the pet adoption fee for a pet at the Humane Society of Broward County. The program, called Benny’s Buddies, started last fall and more than 20 pets have been adopted as a result. A smile as big as his heart!! Meet fiveyear old Tank, our favorite smiling pup! For his entire life, Tank (ID 699247) has known the comfort of a home. He’s great with kids and adults and is a loyal and loving dog. Tank will sit by your side waiting for pets and he smiles at us every time we walk by the kennel. He grew up with kids, is crate trained, good at the vet and takes treats so softly you’ll hardly feel it. He knows “go to bed” and comes when called (most of the time). Tank tends to get a little excited when meeting new people but he’s kind, calm around other dogs, and just wants to be near you. He’ll chase a ball if you invite him, but he’s just as happy hanging by your side. His family is facing a medical crisis, and they made the heartbreaking decision to surrender him so he can get the time and care he deserves. He’s confused, but still smiling and still hoping someone new will walk by and see what a

is

sound human. Whether it’s helping a guest book a ride, reorder room service, or navigate an airport terminal, these pros shape digital interactions that feel smooth, not scripted.

2. AI-Augmented Disaster Response Analyst

In a state where Hurricanes are a seasonal reality, AI is playing a bigger role in keeping people safe. At agencies akin to the Florida Division of Emergency Management or NextEra Energy, analysts use predictive models to track storm paths, estimate damage zones, and coordinate faster relief efforts. It’s a role that blends meteorology, logistics, and machine learning - all aimed at protecting lives and Infrastructure before the winds even hit.

3. Smart Marine Systems Technician

With Florida’s extensive coastline and booming maritime industries, AI is diving into the blue economy. Ports, fisheries, and environmental groups are hiring technicians to work with underwater drones,

AI-enhanced sonar, and smart buoys that monitor ocean health, track vessels, or detect red tide outbreaks. Think Marine Biology meets robotics - and it’s happening everywhere from Tampa Bay to the Keys.

AI in the Broader Workplace

The study also explored how businesses are adapting internally. Nearly one in three organizations (29%) now report having a Chief AI Officer - a role that didn’t exist a few years ago. And AI is leaving a measurable financial mark:

• 26% of managers say AI has improved productivity

• 25% point to enhanced customer satisfaction

• 23% cite cost reductions

• 13% note revenue growth

• 12% see gains in risk or compliance management

Despite these benefits, challenges remain. When asked about barriers to transformation, 25% of leaders cited a

shortage of skilled talent, and an equal number pointed to cultural resistance within their organizations. Budget limitations (21%), poor strategic alignment (15%), and unclear ROI (14%) also held companies back.

Tech budgets are gradually shifting: on average, 15% of annual spend is now earmarked for AI-related Infrastructure. But many leaders still worry about knowledge gaps at the top. Just 15% of C-suite teams are described as having a “deep understanding and regular use” of AI, while 22% fall into the “very low” category. Looking ahead, executives believe AI will most significantly reshape the roles of CEOs (29%) and CFOs (27%), with CTOs, CMOs, and CHROs close behind.

“AI isn’t wiping out work - it’s reshaping it. What we’re seeing is a nationwide pivot toward roles that pair human creativity with machine intelligence. The smartest organizations are already hiring for this future, not waiting to catch up,” says Greg Genung, CEO & Founder of Snowfire.

Hallandale Beach State Of The City Of Hallandale Beach Part 2

Last week was part 1 of my State of the City of Hallandale Beach, this week the series continues. Abortion and Immigration were also dividing issues. Let’s face it both the Republicans and Democrats are at fault for this mess. At least we do not forget the “almost” deal. Then the uncertainty with President Biden’s health and his removal of his candidacy. Trump won. President Trump, who lost to Biden, came back. And he did in a “Big”…“Very Big” way exercising the power of the White House excluding other branches of government.

Voting is very personal but during the two weeks of early voting. I listened to the voters and learned. What was really alarming to me was some voters simply sat it out not voting for President at all. We are seeing more and more people changing parties or simply opting for No Party Affiliation. Our Nation’s democracy is and will always be messy.

We do need to be vigilant. We need to respect different views, defend our Constitution, respect the branches of government to ensure a balance of power. Preserve due process. As a Mayor, I have served this City during both Democratic and Republican Administrations. I like ideas from both sides of the aisle.

I will say in my opinion the super majority of all Americans were not not ready for this ride. We went from one roller coaster to another. I’m not talking the old coney island ones, I’m talking new ones. One with upside down seats, double loops and corkscrews. As with all processes, “The devil is in the details.” The only certainty now is uncertainty. We as a City are not trained in Immigration Law and policy, nor paid to perform ICE’s duties. This job is a federal function. Counties and some cities enter into interagency agreements with ICE.

impact crime and staffing levels without any considerations. We fought and now there are training dollars so local Law Enforcement can understand Immigration Laws and policy. There is also a $1,000 bonus to officers that end up participating in helping ICE operations.

The other big change on the federal level was the Department of Government Efficiency-DOGE. At first, when Musk was appointed my hopes were that he would work to increase efficiency through

1,900 special districts they will find some findings. We were DOGE’d and I am proud to share. Our 2024 Budget of over $200 Million dollars that included over $80 Million Dollars in Projects and Robust Reserves went through our 2024 Annual Audit with zero findings. I’ll say that again zero findings.

So what are the true threats we are facing as a City? Uncertainty, inflation, tariffs, cuts to the National Budget, limited Grants and the Governor’s push to cut

and hospitals. Social Security was left whole and untouched. The Veteran Administration Budget was actually increased. Mainly to implement an overhaul in technology for improved medical record management and access. Also they will allow Veterans to go to Non VA hospitals. DOE was slashed while keeping Title One programs preserved.

Quality schools matter to our cities. Funny all the talk about cutting DOE there was $60 Million Dollar in Charter School

departmental reorganization and improve technology in a methodical way. God knows they need it.

We as a city certainly do not get in any agency’s way of performing their duties. In Florida, there was a special session to change Immigration Laws. The state increased penalties for coming to the state illegally. The level of punishment for fraudulently voting and other criminal activities have been elevated. For Capital Felony crimes there is now the death penalty. There is no more free state tuition for undocumented students.

Our major sticking point and concern with our City was taking our officers off their daily duties fighting crime to doing another agency’s job. This would directly

This would mean firing inefficient employees but no one saw massive cuts. Sure, there is waste but many agency jobs serve the most vulnerable like our Veterans and seniors. We are still watching to see what the impacts will be. In Florida, I like to say we have been double DOGE’d. I wish they would truly DOGE themselves. No disrespect to other electeds in the audience. Have you tried getting a Driver’s License? Tried to get a response from the Department of Business and Professional Regulations?

I have not heard any large announcements from the State DOGE office but I am sure with over 410 cities and over

Property Taxes. National Cuts have become clearer this past two weeks. The White House released a 46 page memorandum which was forwarded to me along with all of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Executive Board. Yes, I read it –Remember Verify.

The cuts will impact everyone in some way or another. Many line Budget items were either totally eliminated or drastically reduced. Medicaid cuts are huge. While it does not impact our City functions it will impact the most vulnerable. In our district like many others children make up 55% of the Medicaid roll. Yes, it is shameful individuals will not receive care but there are other broader implications.

In the grand scheme cuts to Medicaid impact service providers, doctors, nurses

funding. All school costs will now be passed directly to the states. Obviously full elimination of energy saving programs dubbed the “BIG GREEN LIE.” This will impact our ability to apply for Federal Grants which have helped with the progress of the Cloud Mini Bus System. We are still working to build our fleet charging facility. In the County the plan to go after Federal Grants to build out EV charging stations has already been shelved.
