The movie grew from a childhood fascination with sharks from Filmmaker, Biologist and Diver Matthew Tomaszewski, who spent years filming sharks. “A giant screen 3D film on sharks was like a three-word pitch,” Tomaszewski recounts excitedly. “There are a lot of details in terms of their behavior and their physiology that you don’t get to see on a normal TV screen. To be able to show the grandeur and detail of some of these amazing creatures on the giant screen was really exciting.” Tomaszewski and the crew traversed the world in search of some of the highest concentrations of sharks: the Maldives, Tahiti, the Cook Islands; Lord Howe Island, the Australian version of Galapagos Islands; even a tiny island deep in the Southern Ocean, home to great whites. By virtue of having healthy shark populations, these places are also quite untouched and incredibly photogenic for the giant screen. Carrying hundreds of kilos of giant screen filming equipment off the grid is no vacation, however. Underwater filming is a complex puzzle of weather, ocean currents and the sharks themselves. Audiences will be treated to the best and most magical moments captured on camera - think seas so clear you can see the clouds from 30 meters below water and being surrounded by more than one hundred sharks swimming peacefully around you. Through the eyes of shark scientists, divers and even a “shark whisperer,” audiences will see another side of sharks. When Hearing Hurts: Managing Middle Ear Problems In Flat-Faced Dog Breeds From their adorable snort to bulging eyes and ever endearing waddle, smushfaced dogs are increasing in popularity due to their cuteness and fun-loving personalities. In fact, French bulldogs have recently become the most popular dog breed in the United States, according to the American Kennel Club. However, the same physical differences that make these pets adorable are also a catalyst for several ear-related issues. Dr. Christina Gentry, a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, provides insight into why brachycephalic, or smush-faced, dog breeds may develop ear problems and how they can be treated. Unique Anatomy Brachycephalic directly translates to “short-headed” and is the term used to describe adorable, flat-faced dog breeds such as pugs, bulldogs, boxers, and Shih Tzus. To match their cuteness factor is a hefty list of health-related concerns that owners must be aware of when shouldering the responsibility of a brachycephalic

dog’s care. According to Gentry, these breeds generally have narrower ear canals than dogs with normally proportioned faces, meaning their ear canals tend to taper at the bottom. “This tapered shape can trap bacteria (and ear wax) toward the bottom, which, in some cases, can allow that bacteria to break through the eardrum and then go into the middle ear cavity,” Gentry said. “The short face and more rounded head leads to a slight change in position of the middle ear, making these conditions more common in these breeds.” Bacteria that enters the middle ear cavity either through the eardrum or from an upper respiratory infection can cause a condition known as middle ear disease, or an infection of the middle ear. “In these breeds, an infection in the middle ear cavity worries me because their middle ear is very close to their cute little brains,” Gentry said. “We don’t want an infection to spread.” Another condition that is a particularly high risk for these breeds is middle ear effusion (MEE), or the accumulation of fluid in the middle ear cavity. “When their Eustachian tube gets closed, either from a respiratory infection

or from just anatomical differences that we see in these smush-faced dogs, the normal, small amounts of fluid that your middle ear makes can’t exit; they just build up over time,” Gentry said. Dizzying Changes Whether from middle ear infection or MEE, problems in the middle ear can cause a variety of unpleasant symptoms. Because several important nerves run closely along the middle ear cavity, dogs with these conditions may develop nausea and dizziness. If not recognized and properly handled as soon as possible, middle ear conditions can also cause other symptoms, including: • Balance issues • A head tilt • Changes in eye movement • Facial nerve paralysis (inability to blink) “Without the ability to blink, if the disease lingers, these dogs can develop really bad eye ulcers and will have to see an ophthalmologist,” Gentry said. “I’ve had patients lose eyes because the ulcer has gotten so bad because they couldn’t blink.” Remaining Cautious When dealing with problems within the

middle ear, Gentry notes that early detection is key. She recommends proceeding with the utmost caution and specifies that any sign of an ear infection — even a mild abnormal head tilt in a smooshy-faced dog — should prompt owners to seek a veterinarian, who commonly treats these infections with medication. However, some flat-faced pets that experience a serious case of middle ear disease may require surgery and could potentially even lose an ear canal. Fortunately, this does not significantly impact their ability to live a normal life. While the cautionary tales that come with owning brachycephalic breeds should not be skimmed over, they also shouldn’t be a deterrent for owning these adorable dogs. With some extra time and attention, owners can make sure that their smush-faced pets live long, happy lives. What Parents Should Know About Pediatric Growth Hormone Deficiency (PGHD) (Family Features)

Pediatric Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) is a relatively rare condition, affecting an estimated 1 in 4,000-10,000 children. Despite its rarity, GHD can significantly impact a child’s growth and development, which can potentially lead to short stature, delayed puberty, decreased muscle mass, delay in bone maturation and psychosocial implications. With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, children with GHD can achieve improved growth outcomes and lead healthy lives. Increasing understanding of GHD treatment options and closing knowledge gaps can make a difference in the patient and caregiver journey. What is PGHD? Growth Hormone plays a critical role in helping young bodies grow and develop, including improving muscle metabolism, growing bones and breaking down fats. PGHD occurs when a child’s pituitary gland is unable to produce enough growth hormone which results in noticeable changes on the growth chart. Children with PGHD may look younger than their peers of the same age and gender, and puberty may be delayed or absent. Muscle development, metabolism and bone strength may also be impacted by insufficient or inadequate levels of Growth Hormone. While growth hormone stimulates height increase during development, its role in the body extends beyond childhood. Even after growth plates close, Growth Hormone plays a vital role for Cardiovascular health and for maintaining normal body structure and Metabolism. Research also indicates Osteoporosis as a long-term implication of GHD, highlighting its importance in overall health.

(Photo courtesy of Shutterstock) What are the Symptoms? Pediatric Growth Hormone Deficiency may be apparent during infancy, or it may not be revealed until later in childhood. Children with PGHD tend to have typical body proportions but noticeably slow growth. Other symptoms may include an immature or significantly younger look than other children of the same age, chubby body build, slow hair and nail growth, teeth that come in late and episodes of Low Blood Sugar. Children who have experienced a brain injury, brain tumor or radiation treatment involving the head are at higher risk for Pediatric Growth Hormone Deficiency. Genetic factors can also increase risk.

How are Children Diagnosed? Generally, doctors attempt to rule out other causes of slow growth, which may include genetic short stature, poor nutrition - which may be the result of an underlying condition such as Celiac Disease and other genetic conditions, such as Hypothyroidism or Turner Syndrome. X-rays to evaluate bone age and imaging to identify the location of the Pituitary Gland can support the diagnosis. Another common screening option is a growth hormone stimulation test, in which medications are administered to trigger the release of growth hormone and blood is drawn frequently to monitor the body’s response.

What Treatment Options are Available? Once a diagnosis is confirmed, children with PGHD often work closely with an Endocrinologist to develop a treatment plan that includes Growth Hormone Replacement Therapy and closely monitor future growth. Dosing is based on weight and requires ongoing monitoring for adjustments. Traditionally, treatment was through daily injections, but more recently, weekly injections became available. Children with PGHD who begin treatment early in life are more likely to reach adult height consistent with their family’s stature. Learn more: https://GHDinKids.com.

Beating BPH From Page 1A A shift in BPH Treatment BPH is not life threatening, although it can lead to complications if left untreated. Some complications come on suddenly and can be painful, such as urinary retention, or an inability to urinate. Untreated BPH can also lead to lasting damage to the bladder because it stretches and weakens the bladder muscles. More serious complications include Bladder Stones and Kidney Damage. Fortunately, BPH is a treatable condition that can be effectively managed and help men return to enjoying their lives. Treatment options for BPH depend on the severity of symptoms and the impact on a man’s quality of life. They range from lifestyle changes and medications to minimally invasive or more invasive surgical interventions. Historically, medication was the next step in the progression to treat BPH symptoms, but that approach has started to shift in recent years. Medications are still widely used today, but due to their low efficacy, side effect profile – including impact on sexual function – and poor patient compliance, many urologists are providing other options for their patients right from the start. Beyond the issues mentioned earlier

around medications, there has been some concern in the medical community that BPH medications only act as a Band-Aid for symptoms. Though they may provide some symptom relief for some people, they don’t address the underlying cause of the issue – bladder obstruction. And long-term bladder outlet obstruction creates pressure on the bladder, causing it to give out and may result in irreparable damage to the bladder. Thankfully for physicians and patients, and widely due to their demand for better treatment options, today there are a plethora of new and emerging minimally invasive treatment options that can be used alongside or in place of medication. New options – one size does not fit all At one time, a Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) Surgical Procedure was considered the gold standard in BPH Treatments, but it is an Invasive Surgery and there are significant risks involved including sexual side effects, incontinence, bleeding, and a long recovery time. Patient and physician demand for better options has led to the creation of a new class of safe and effective, minimally invasive technologies that don’t cause the same side effects as medications, don’t negatively impact men’s sexual function and do address the root issue of Bladder Obstruction. With this in mind, and the holiday cooking and gifting season on fast approach, we caught up with Cathy to discuss how she can help make celebratory meals quicker, easier and healthier by using an air fryer as well as the profound success realized through her entrepreneurship, digital marketing and Social Media influencer endeavors. MK: You are a mother of eight, and it’s been said that you don’t like to cook? Is that what made using the air fryer appealing to you? CY: Yes, that’s true. I don’t like to cook. But, as a busy mom of eight kids, I needed a way to put food on the table fast--several times a day. I tried meal prep, delivery services, eating out (not good), and more. Nothing worked. Meal prep required too much time in the kitchen. And the other options were too pricey for my dealseeking nature. That’s when I started experimenting with an air fryer—which also appealed to my penchant for new technology. Soon, I discovered I could make simple, delicious, and mostly nutritious meals in minutes. When my kids ate those first dinners without complaining, I had an “aha moment” that dramatically changed how I cook and the trajectory of my business. In 2020 during the Pandemic, with a house full of family members needing to eat, I used my phone to record videos of the food I cooked in the air fryer. The kids tried and rated each recipe. Some even pitched in to help chop, mix, and measure. I posted the videos and recipes on YouTube, and here we are. I now have a family full of air fryer enthusiasts. The recipe portion of Fabulessly Frugal, which is my original business started to help families save money while enjoying delicious meals, has grown so much that we spun off the cooking content into a site called Empowered Cooks. As a complement to that, I also launched Pine & Pepper, which is a physical product line of cooking accessories. Ironically, my reluctance to cook was an essential ingredient for building this thriving culinary business that helps people (like me) feel more confident in the kitchen. To date, it has sold over 35,000 copies worldwide, giving folks the confidence and inspiration to enjoy all that an air fryer has to offer. MK: You had published findings from a survey you conducted unveiling insights into air fryer enthusiasts’ preferences what did you glean from that? CY: The insights gained from that survey, conducted among our audience of nearly 650,000 subscribers, were compelling, with participants representing a diverse audience demographic. This ranged from empty nesters to a growing cohort of younger enthusiasts between their teens and mid-20s. Among the findings, the survey revealed that owning an air fryer led to faster and more efficient cooking for well over half (67.8%) of users, a shift towards healthier cooking for 44.5%, and increased culinary experimentation for 43%. The usage pattern indicated that 39.7% utilize the air fryer several times a week, 36% use it daily or almost daily, and 9.6% use it once a week. It’s been amazing to get these survey results. The insights are opening up new ways for us to support our air fryer community. It’s pretty cool to think that air fryers, once just a gadget for zapping frozen foods, have become a kitchen gamechanger. We’re here to keep bringing everyday cooks the best tips, recipes, and advice, whether they’re just starting with an air fryer or have been experimenting with it for a while. Hallandale Beach Student Awarded National STEAM Scholarship The role tech plays in our daily lives is growing, and STEM fields are providing more opportunities than ever for people of all ages. For her contributions to the field, Anna Zavadski, an NSU University School senior from Hallandale Beach, Florida, was awarded the STEAM Scholarship by National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). Anna started a chapter of Girls Who Code at her school. She visited lowincome schools to teach elementary students how to make games in Scratch and use Wonder Dash robots, spoke with pioneering women in STEM for a speaker series she launched, and coded an extensive portfolio of projects ranging from fun birthday cards to programs advocating for social issues. In addition to computer science, Anna is also passionate about environmental issues. Seeing harmful algal blooms blanket the shores of the beaches she lives

near inspired her to dedicate her school research project to learning how to predict algal blooms on Florida’s west coast. She also completed a Mapping Justice program, writing a capstone on the impact hurricanes have on vulnerable Florida communities and creating maps that display a correlation between regions frequently hit by hurricanes and low-income counties. In college, Anna is excited to study computer science with the goal to become an AI Engineer. She aims to humanize technology, advocating for the ethical development of new software and AI. Anna says, “I embrace the challenge that computer science and environmental science bring to my creativity, logic, and advocacy, and am certain that I’ll be part of the movement shaping the future of technology and society at the speed of light.”

Scientists are cautiously optimistic that boosting Thiamine levels could hold the key to slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease.

A Potential Ally Against Early Alzheimer’s Disease (BPT) - In the relentless battle against Alzheimer’s Disease, researchers are looking closely at a lab-made version of Thiamine (also known as Vitamin B1). This nutrient, crucial for brain function and energy production, is now in the spotlight for its potential role in combating cognitive decline. Alzheimer’s Disease is a progressive disease that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior that affects nearly seven million individuals in the U.S., and that number is expected to reach 13 million by 2050. The good news is the Alzheimer’s Association says this is a time of great promise in Alzheimer’s research with increased government and philanthropic funding and a growing community of scientists - all of which are instrumental to finding new treatments to stop, slow and prevent Alzheimer’s Disease. Take Carole, wife and mother of two. “I have been living with Alzheimer’s disease for three years and while the disease has taken its toll on me, it has really impacted my whole family. I was always the caretaker in our house, but my husband has had to step into that role now. He and my children have become my support system and I know it’s not easy for them either. New Research in the Fight Against Alzheimer’s Disease In an effort to alleviate the burden of Alzheimer’s Disease, researchers have long sought new ways to treat and prevent the devastating disease. Recently, their attention has turned to Thiamine, a nutrient with extraordinary potential. The brain tissue of people with Alzheimer’s Disease shows that they have a Thiamine Deficiency, even though they may have a sufficient supply of Thiamine in their blood. This is likely due to a diminished ability to deliver Thiamine to their brain. A lack of Thiamine in the brain compromises memory and cognition. Scientists are cautiously optimistic that boosting Thiamine levels could hold the key to slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease. By significantly increasing the amount of Thiamine in the bloodstream, they hope to provide a much-needed boost to brain function and memory retention. Furthermore, they believe that Benfotiamine could work in combination with other existing treatments to offer additional benefits beyond what current therapies can achieve. While the idea of a readily available intervention that helps slow or stop Alzheimer’s Disease cognitive decline is appealing, more research is needed to establish the link between Thiamine and Alzheimer’s Disease. A new clinical trial,

funded by the National Institute of Aging at the National Institutes of Health, is seeking to shed light on this potential connection. This trial will focus on Benfotiamine, a synthetic form of Thiamine specifically developed to enhance its absorption by the brain. For Carole, and countless others like her, this trial represents hope in the fight against Alzheimer’s Disease. The possibility of a potential treatment is a ray of light in an otherwise difficult landscape. Impact of Alzheimer’s on Different Populations Hispanic and Black communities bear a disproportionate burden of the disease. In fact, studies have shown that older Black Americans are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s compared to older non-Hispanic White Americans, while older Hispanic Americans are one and a half times more likely. In addition, there is growing scientific evidence that biomarkers of Alzheimer’s Disease are not the same across populations.[5] In light of these disparities, it is imperative that research into potential treatments like Benfotiamine considers the diverse experiences of those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease. “By including all populations in clinical trials to meet their specific needs, we can ensure that no one

is left behind in the fight against this devastating disease,” said José Alejandro Luchsinger, M.D., MPH, Vice-Chair for Clinical and Epidemiologic Research at Columbia University and a lead investigator in the Benfotiamine trial. Participating in the Benfotiamine Trial The Benfotiamine trial (BenfoTeam Trial) needs people of every race and ethnicity to participate in the study to help find a treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease that works for all. President-designate Jeanette M. Nuñez addresses questions at FIU Board of Trustees meeting.

FIU Trustees Choose Nuñez As Seventh President This month the Florida International University Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name Jeanette M. Nuñez the university’s seventh President. The selection of Nuñez, who has served as FIU’s Interim President since February, is pending confirmation by the Florida Board of Governors. “President-designate Nuñez’s unique combination of experience and extensive network make her the ideal leader to help propel FIU into the future,” said Tovar. “I can think of no better advocate for FIU.” Once confirmed, Nuñez will be the first FIU alumna to hold the top job. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree from FIU in Political Science and International Relations in 1994 and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration in 1998. She also is a former adjunct faculty member who taught a graduate-level course on health policy and served as a guest lecturer over the years. Prior to serving as Interim President,

Nuñez spent 15 years serving the State of Florida both as a State Representative and as Lieutenant Governor. Before serving in government, she was Vice President of governmental affairs at Jackson Health Systems and held similar leadership positions at Kendall Regional and Aventura Hospital And Medical Center. In February, the FIU Board of Trustees named her Interim President. “I am humbled by the trust that has been placed in me by the Board of Trustees to serve as the seventh President of my alma mater,” said Nuñez. “FIU is a preeminent, top 50, major public research university and I look forward to leading our institution to even greater success.” The search committee, chaired by Carlos A. Duart, Vice Chair of the FIU Board of Trustees, worked with a search firm to identify, recruit and interview candidates. After a thorough review and interview process, the Presidential Search Committee selected three finalists for rec-

ommendation to the FIU Board of Trustees. The three finalists included a sitting president and sitting provost at other institutions, as well as Nuñez. The two other finalists chose not to continue to the final phase of the process unless they were named the sole final candidate. The committee unanimously agreed to move Nuñez forward as its sole finalist for consideration by the FIU Board of Trustees, citing her proven record of leadership and unique qualifications. “Since stepping into this role in February, and guided by FIU’s strategic plan, Experience Impact 2030, Presidentdesignate Nuñez has engaged tirelessly and enthusiastically with students, faculty, staff, and our community. How Women Experience Heart Disease Differently (Family Features)

Most people think of Heart Attacks as debilitating pain in the chest. However, that’s not always the case, especially for women, and missing the signs can be a matter of life and death. Although Heart Disease is the leading cause of death among American women, according to the American Heart Association, symptoms are often overlooked or explained away as less worrisome conditions. “Men and women experience many aspects of life differently, and Heart Disease is no exception,” said LeAnne Bloedon, MS, RD, Vice President of Clinical Development, Esperion Therapeutics. “Symptoms of a Heart Attack aren’t as obvious as many women think, and failing to recognize the danger and get help can have catastrophic results.” One Heart Disease Risk factor, for example, is High LDL Cholesterol. Often referred to as a “silent killer,” it doesn’t always present noticeable symptoms. In fact, data suggests women with High LDL Cholesterol are not diagnosed or treated as early or aggressively as men, which can put women at an increased risk for Cardiovascular Events. Understanding how men’s and women’s risk and symptoms differ may help identify and treat a serious heart health problem before it causes lasting damage. Anatomy Differences Some differences between men and women are present in the body’s internal systems, including the Cardiovascular System. Women generally have smaller hearts and narrower blood vessels. This can affect heart health in numerous ways, including less efficient stress responses and greater risk of widespread Plaque buildup, especially in smaller vessels, called Microvasculature, which can pose treatment challenges. Cholesterol Buildup Hormones influence aspects of the body’s function, including Cholesterol Levels. Estrogen, a female sex hormone, raises HDL (Good) Cholesterol Levels. This may be why women tend to have more HDL cholesterol and Lower LDL (Bad) Cholesterol than men, especially before they reach Menopause, though inherited High Cholesterol can affect women of all ages. “It’s critical to raise awareness about the importance of measuring LDL Cholesterol, diagnosing High Cholesterol and treating elevated LDL Cholesterol per guidelines and individual patient needs,” Bloedon said. Risk Factors While there are shared risk factors for Heart Disease among men and women

(such as Obesity, High Blood Pressure and Diabetes), some risk factors disproportionately affect women. Further complicating matters, several diseases mimic Heart Attacks so getting to the root of the problem can be tricky.

Women are more apt than men to experience a Coronary Spasm, Coronary Dissection or Broken Heart Syndrome. What to Watch For: • Like men, women experiencing a Heart Attack may notice prolonged or recurrent chest pain or pressure. • In women, that pain may extend to the arms, back, neck, jaw and stomach. • Some women experience shortness of breath with no chest pain at all. • Other symptoms women are more likely to report can be easily mistaken for other conditions. Working – And Still Falling Short 1 In 3 Workers In Broward’s Most Common Jobs Struggle To Get By In 2023, 37% of workers in Florida’s 20 most common jobs lived in households that couldn’t afford basics, according to new data from United Way of Broward County and its research partner United For ALICE. These workers – the backbone of every community – include retail salespersons and customer service representatives, fast food and counter workers, stockers and order fillers, cashiers, and registered nurses. The State of ALICE in Florida reveals that traditional measures of poverty have severely undercounted the number of households statewide that are living in financial hardship. While 13% of all households in the county lived in poverty in 2023, the new research shows that 37%– more than twice as many – were ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). Combined, 47% of State’s households fell below the ALICE Threshold of Financial Survival in 2023, up from 35% in 2022. ALICE households bring in less than the basic costs of housing, childcare, food, transportation, health care and technology, plus taxes. Yet because their income is above the Federal Poverty Level, they often don’t qualify for assistance. “When we misjudge the number of families living on the edge, we misjudge what it truly takes to create prosperous communities,” said Kathleen Cannon, President/CEO of United Way of Broward County. “Entire households and the essential workers who keep our economy running can slip through the cracks, missing out on the resources they need for good health, financial security, and the chance to reach their full potential. That shortfall hurts not only ALICE families—it diminishes all of us.” The crux of the struggle for ALICE families is the gap between wages and

expenses. In 2023, a family of four in Broward needed $87,732 just to cover the essentials – nearly three times the Federal Poverty Level of $30,000. Yet even with both parents working full time in two of the state’s most common jobs – a personal care aide and a stock worker/order filler – this family’s combined income still fell short of the cost of basics by $57,732. The State of ALICE in (State) also reveals that in 2023: Florida ranked 48th in financial hardship among all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, with one of the nation’s highest percentages of households struggling to make ends meet.

Wishing you all a happy and safe 4th of July. We are working on program changes in our Sanitation Division. Our staff, under the leadership of the Acting Director Jeff Towne, has righted our Sanitation Division. We have one big issue that must be addressed to ensure sustainability of the enterprise fund. We want it to keep it in the black. Our policy of 100% fee monthly bulk waste is very generous considering it is not used by every single customer. Many residents are unaware in addition to the free monthly bulk we partner and pay for the county’s bulk drop-offs. This is open and free to our residents. We have found that this free service is being exploited by commercial owners and construction businesses. Operationally, we have been cracking down on this abuse, but we are still considering changes to the bulk system. Recommended changes include requesting a pickup rather than having trucks going all over a quarter of every week. Limiting the free amount per year rather than every month and educating customers on free alternatives to make it equable. The other terrific addition this year is a new and updated Webpage. It is more user accessible and includes a Chatbot for easy searching. I need to share that technology is moving at breakneck speed. We continue to work with our great amazing IT Department keeping true to our motto progress innovation and opportunity.

The biggest challenge when migrating to the virtual world is data and data input. Imagine taking every one of your documents, scanning them and putting them online. If not done properly they are useless. Now imagine years of city documents within each city department. This historical data is vital. I joke that currently I am the official historian. While I have a good memory, I cannot remember everything. I have legacy documents in my office that help shed light on items that are still relative to today. We have approved a comprehensive modernization of record keeping through-

out the entire city. Giving clear and efficient direct access to public records will not only help our city functions but help every stakeholder. Whether it’s building records, planning records or legal documents we want them at our and your fingertips. Last year, I shared that we continue to focus on Code Compliance. Lifeguard towers and first-aid stations are located along the sandy beach. If you see something, say something to a police officer, security and/or lifeguard. Call 911 in an emergency. Alcoholic beverages, firearms, weapons of any kind, fireworks of all types, sparklers, glass, single-use plastic and foam items, coolers larger than 36” long and barbecue grills are prohibited and will be confiscated. Connecting canopies, or canopies larger than 10’ X 10’ are prohibited. All dogs, unless a Service Animal, are prohibited on the Broadwalk. Dogs are welcome between the lifeguard stands at Pershing and Custer Streets only. Picnicking is permitted on the sandy beach in designated areas between Sherman and Custer Streets, as well as within Charnow Park at Garfield Street, Keating Park at Magnolia Terrace and Harry Berry Park at Azalea Terrace. To help keep Hollywood Beach beautiful, visitors are reminded to bring reusable items and clean up after themselves at the end of the day. Please do not overfill trash receptacles. As a reminder, Hollywood Beach is plastic and foam-free. Single-use plastics, foam containers, plastic bags, bottles and utensils are prohibited on Hollywood Beach, at Cityoperated parks and other City facilities. It is prime Nesting Season for several protected species of Sea Turtles. Turtle Nesting activity is normal and should not be considered an emergency. An App requested ride is $2 per person, per ride. Passengers are required to pay the fare onboard using a secure QR Code to process payment. The Sun Shuttle will be operating on

Vehicles entering A1A from ocean-side streets will only be allowed to make right-hand turns. ***Traffic pattern subject to change based on traffic flow.

Holland Park And Polk Street Marina: Once the parking lots reach capacity, the only permitted vessel traffic will be that which is leaving the marina. Bridge Schedule: Intracoastal Waterway bridges will maintain their regular schedules throughout the day and early evening, but from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. bridges at Dania Beach Boulevard, Sheridan Street and Hollywood Boulevard will remain in the down position to allow vehicular traffic to enter and exit the beach. Marine traffic is limited. Parking: Public parking at the City-operated parking garages on the barrier island is on a first come, first served basis. The Garfield Parking Garage, 300 Connecticut Street, Hollywood, Florida 33019 and the

Nebraska Parking Garage, 327 Nebraska Street, Hollywood, Florida 33019, are expected to reach capacity quickly, early in the day. The SPECIAL EVENT FLAT RATE of $30 for 24-hours applies at these two locations. Fort Lauderdale Native Serves With The Next Generation Of U.S. Navy Elite Rescue Swimmers By Alvin Plexico, Navy Office of Community Outreach

Petty Officer 2nd Class Alex Martinez, a native of Fort Lauderdale Petty Officer 2nd Class Alex Martinez, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is serving in the U.S. Navy assigned to Aviation Rescue Swimmer School (ARSS) where the next generation of Aviation Rescue Swimmers (AIRRs) are taught to execute life-or-death rescues in the most extreme conditions imaginable. Martinez is a 2010 graduate of Coral Springs High School. Martinez joined the Navy six years ago. Today, Martinez serves as a naval aircrewman (tactical helicopter) and instructor. “I was looking for something different, and the Navy offered that opportunity,” Martinez said. The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Fort Lauderdale. “Growing up, I learned the importance of leadership,” Martinez said. “The leaders I had growing up taught me a lot about how to inspire others.” Located at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, ARSS provides initial aviation water survival training and CPR qualification to all preflight student naval aviators and student naval flight officers, student flight surgeons, naval aircrew candidates, student aviators from other branches of the U.S. Armed Forces and international student aviators. As part of the world’s most elite Special Operations force, AIRRs are a team dedicated to being the top emergency response unit in the world. Leaping from helicopters, swimming through raging seas and saving victims whose lives

are on the line, AIRRs complete search and rescue missions in some of the most extreme environments imaginable. The motto of an AIRR is, “so others may live.” It is a testament to not only the selflessness of this job but the honor, courage, and commitment it takes to do it well. The U.S. Navy is celebrating its 250th birthday this year. According to Navy officials, “America is a maritime nation and for 250 years, America’s Warfighting Navy has sailed the globe in defense of freedom.” With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America. Martinez serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation’s prosperity and security. Martinez has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments as part of military service and outside his time in uniform. “I just completed my first ultra, a 50miler in January,” Martinez said. “I’ve already signed up for a 100-miler in September.” Martinez can take pride in serving America through military service. “When I first joined, it was for me,” Martinez said. “I selfishly wanted to make myself better. Now that I’ve served a few years and am working here as an instructor, it’s less about me and more about what I can do to help others.” Martinez is grateful to others for help-
