The Amazing Sports Immortals Museum
By Neil Keller
Welcome to Keller’s Korner. Today we are going to tell you about the Sports Immortals Museum located in Boca Raton, founded by Joel Platt. This museum has become one of the top attractions in South Florida for the last 30 years for people who love sports.
World renowned collector Joel Platt founded the Sports Immortals museum in 1995. Joel is a member of theWestern Pennsylvania Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and a recent nominee for the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in Israel.
I have known for years about Joel and his amazing collection of over one million mementos from the world’s greatest athletes. When I moved to South Florida four years ago, I visited Sports Immortals a few times and I love talking to Joel and his son Jim.
It is a fascinating place which features rotating displays that will leave you wanting to come back. There is also a retail store offering a selection of over 20,000 unique and rare sports items to purchase. His most priceless items are kept in out-of-State security vaults.
Going to the Sports Immortals Museum will be an experience people will treasure forever.
Joel’s inspirational story began in 1943 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the young age of four years old when he was injured in a gasoline explosion at his uncle’s car dealership. Joel was hospitalized and bedridden for over a year and his parents would bring him baseball cards to entertain him during his recovery period. His favorite cards were Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. One night in the hospital Joel had a dream that Babe Ruth visited him and said, “Kid don’t give up, you can get better and one day be a major league baseball player or build a hall of fame to honor sports heroes.”
Once Joel recov ered, he set his life on those two goals. He became an outstanding shortstop at the University of Duquesne but injured his arm prior to signing with the Boston Red Sox. With his major league dream ending Joel concentrated on his other goal to curate the mementos from sports legends and build an attraction that would honor and enshrine the world’s greatest athletes. To accomplish this goal, Joel has traveled over one million miles over a 75 year period to curate over one million mementos. Joel’s collection has been recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as “the largest collection on all sports in the world.” Just a few items to mention include the famous T206 Honus Wagner baseball card, a game used autographed bat from Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig’s first baseman glove, and all of Jim Thorpe’s mementos including his trophies, traditional Native American clothing, and Carlisle Indians football uniform.
Joel added that his favorite Jewish athlete was former Hall of Fame Quarterback Sid Luckman. Joel said, “Sid was a great player and a wonderful person.” Luckman’s mother attended her first game in 1943 when the Chicago Bears played the New York Giants. Inspired by her presence Sid set a record by throwing 7 touchdown passes and dedicated the game ball to his mother. This football was Sid’s most prized possession and when he passed away he left the ball to his good friend Joel Platt for the Sports Immortals Museum.
obtained all of Jim Thorpe’s mementos from his wife Patricia. The items included Jim’s Carlisle Indians jersey, trophies, medals, helmets and his 1912 Olympic album containing an original letter from President William Taft congratulating Jim on his gold medal victories in the Decathlon and Pentathlon events at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden. Jim Thorpe is recognized as the greatest all around athlete of all time. In addition to being an Olympic champion, he is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and played major league baseball.
Joel and his son Jim’s ultimate goal is to establish the Sports Immortals International Hall of Fame Complex that will utilize his famous collection in conjunction with today’s latest.
Immersive experiential technology to bring the world’s greatest athletes to life to tell their stories and inspire visitors of all ages to achieve success and realize their dreams. Joel said “he wants to make enshrinement of Sports Immortals the greatest honor achievable in sports.” I asked Joel, is there anything you do not have? He replied, “We are always looking to acquire rare historical sports items and collections.” For more information on Sports Immortals, call: (561) 997-2575. Through their unwavering dedication to delivering cus tomer satisfaction and their “old school” approach to business, Auto Tags of Hallandale can proudly say they have been around since 1987 and are showing no signs of slowing down.
Randy, whose family roots in the area can be traced back over a half-century, attended elementary and middle school right here in the city. As a young man, he enjoyed playing many sports like baseball and football at City Park (Bluesten Park) and since then, not much has changed. Randy is a still a major sports fanatic and his outgoing attitude and love of people have continued to make him a pillar of the community.
Randy has built a remarkable repu tation through his various relationships in the community. His love of people and desire to always give back to the com munity he grew up in, has garnered him an enormous and varying network of cli entele from far and wide. Few can say that they have had the privilege of being in business for as a long as Randy has.
“I never left,” says Randy. “To be a part of this community for so long has really meant so much to me and our family. Through the years, even though we were based in Hallandale, we started to pick up new customers from all over.”
Randy’s experience assisting customers with a title, tag, renewal or the proper motor vehicle documents has helped establish AutoTags of Hallandale as a premier business in South Florida. They offer a variety of services that include assistance in registering your vehicle, updating your decal, or replacing it if it has been lost or stolen.
If you are a new resident to Florida and the city of Hallandale and need to register your vehicle, then AutoTags of Hallandale can assist you in this process. Bring in your vehicle’s title from the state from which you are moving, proof of Florida

Fluke Martini & Crudo Bar Debuts
Miami Beach’s Beloved Italian Hotspot Turned A Stroke Of Luck Into A Seafood-Driven Small Plates And Cocktail Bar
What began as a “fluke” is now Fluke. This spring, the team behind Macchialina—one of the city’s most beloved Italian restaurants—is turning the tides on Alton Road, this time with a bolder, brinier approach. Stationed in Macchialina’s original indoor space, Fluke, an elevated oyster and crudo bar with a bold cocktail program is casting a new net for Miami Beach dwellers with a hankering for fresh fish. Inspired by the travels and epicurean adventures of award-winning hospitality mavens, Executive Chef Michael Pirolo, and Managing Partners Jennifer Chaefsky and Jacqueline Pirolo, Fluke blends the simplicity of quality seafood with a laid-back, self-service format, offering a new way to dine in a familiar space.
“Twelve years ago, we never could have imagined the success Macchialina would achieve,” says Chef Michael Pirolo. “What started as ‘the little restaurant that wouldn’t quit’ turned into a 5,600-square foot expansion with a newfound opportunity to build on our roots and bring Fluke to life. This stroke of luck is how we landed on the name ‘Fluke’ – it’s a celebration of those happy coincidences that aligned perfectly to make this exciting
new chapter possible.”
At Fluke, the cavernous warmth and timeless exposed brick of Macchialina are preserved, while a moody black marble bar adds a striking refresh. This transformation to an oyster bar concept is evident in both the menu and the ambiance— dimly lit, effortlessly elegant, where freshly shucked oysters and chilled martinis set the tone. The self-service model invites guests to mark their selections on petite paper menus, offering a laid-back, interactive dining experience with elevated eats and perfectly paired libations. Cocktail servers will deliver drinks while the kitchen, helmed by Chef de cuisine and Uchi alum, Trevor Zwaan, focuses on churning out a rotating selection of crudo preparations and crispy-fried crustaceans. Overseeing day-to-day operations is Manager Samantha Harris, who joined the Macchialina team in November 2023.
“The idea was to reimagine the OG indoor space at Macchialina for the community that’s supported us for over a decade while bringing a fun and fresh idea to the neighborhood. No reservations—just drop in for a martini and oysters or stay for a full meal. The menu is refined yet still approachable, staying true to what
Macchialina has always been about: great food, electric atmosphere and zero pretense” says Jacqueline Pirolo.
On the menu, guests can look forward to crudo standouts like Fluke with tomato guazzetto and baby caponata, Madai (Japanese Sea Bream) with plum vinaigrette and Thai chili, and Branzino with artichoke gremolata, citrus oil, and preserved lemon. Fried favorites include rosemary salt-dusted Hand-Cut Fries with senape sauce, Fried Mussels Marinara, and Fried Shrimp with artichoke remoulade. The Big Macch Burger, previously a coveted off-menu special, has a permanent place on the menu—boasting a perfect beef-to-bun ratio, melty Fontina cheese, mushrooms, and absolutely no ketchup.
“We wanted to do seafood the way we love to eat it—simple, high-quality, and always inspired.” says chef Michael Pirolo. “We’re bringing that same philosophy to Fluke; it’s all about letting the ingredients shine without overcomplicating things. Miami Beach has incredible access to fresh seafood, and we’re excited to give it the love and respect it deserves, but with our own spin.”
Jacqueline Pirolo’s wine list marks a
departure from Macchialina’s famously all-Italian selection, embracing clean, natural, and biodynamic wines. Guests can expect French whites, light-bodied reds, and plenty of bubbles, with highlights like Loire Valley Chenin Blanc, chilled Beaujolais, and Champagne. Complementing the martini-focused cocktail program—developed by Oren Drori under Pirolo’s direction—is a curated selection of sherry and dry Marsala, nodding to Southern European drinking traditions. Drori, formerly of Beaker & Grey, led the beverage program at Macchialina for a year and also developed the cocktail menu at Bar Bucce. Fluke will also host the Lucky $7 Martini Happy Hour from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., featuring a selection of martinis for just seven dollars. The small but expertly curated beverage program reflects Fluke’s coastal essence, offering ocean-inspired libations designed to highlight the delicate flavors of the sea.
Fluke opened on Wendesday May 21st, 2025 at 820 Alton Road, Miami Beach, Florida 33139. Fluke will not be taking reservations, seating is first come, first served.

This is where memory care communities like The Sterling Aventura shine.
