De korta av- och påsignalerna får metallen att svänga och skapar därmed ett brett register av toner. The technique is the artist’s own invention: A grassophone that, according to Grass’s composition and computerization, sends impulses measured in milliseconds to small magnets attached to the objects. The short on-and-off signals make the metal oscillate, creating a wide range of tones. 34
