COMMODORE’S LOG D

ear SPYC Members, Welcome to March and enjoy the many fun activities at our Club!

On March 29th at 5:30 pm, I invite you to the Downtown Clubhouse for the 2021 Yachting Recognition Awards Ceremony. Come personally meet your fellow SPYC members that have worked very hard, and whose achievements on the water carry the St. Petersburg Yacht Club name and burgee to regional, national & worldwide events and recognition. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres, soft drinks, and a cash bar. RSVP with Catering at (727) 892-6882. The Entertainment Committee is hard at work! Jeannie O’Grady and her energetic team have been working hard planning great entertainment for you. March’s highlight features International Musical Comedy Entertainer Jimmy Keys performing Friday, March 18th. You’ll certainly enjoy this high energy musical evening! Check the Club Events section of this issue for complete details. For many years our Club has had a Club Dress Code, but over time, it has not been brought to the attention of Club members. Recently, however, members have asked for a return of a required Dress Code. In December, your Flag Officers approved a ‘revised to suit-the-times’ dress code and allowed an adjustment grace period, which has ended. If you forget, management has asked your wait staff to remind you. Please make yourselves aware of the policy which can be found at the Reception Desk or on the website at www.spyc.org: Click ‘Member Central’, then ‘Club Information’ and see the ‘Dress Code’ link.

As you know, our Club has recently experienced unprecedented growth, which is continuing at the same pace for 2022, and we have some wonderful new members. However, in consideration of all members and what our Club membership capacity might be, the driver to this maximum is actually kitchen capacity. Management, the Flag Officers and the Board of Directors believe membership is approaching that capacity limit. In addition to these concerns, the group is also working on Strategic and Long Range Master Planning solutions. Among the topics discussed is how we currently compare to other premium Yacht Clubs, what the next generation of members is looking for when choosing a Club, and how we will meet these requirements while keeping current with maintenance and capital improvements. These demands and maintenance come at a price, and we believe it’s best to begin funding to meet these future needs. Our first adjustment, started March 1st, was our new Initiation Fee for Active Members, at $10,000. We are also working on a revised Initiation schedule for Intermediate and other New Member categories. We’ll keep you posted on adjustments as they occur. Enjoy your Club and I look forward to seeing you around this month! Fair winds and calm seas,

Bill Waters, Commodore

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. MARCH 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

GENERAL MANAGER’S LOG 55

General Manager’s Log by: Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM

W

hat a month we just had! February was packed with great events starting with the Vintage Car Show, then the Valentine’s Day Regatta, the new Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series, and closing the month with the Grand Prix Garage Party. The entire team here at the Club did an outstanding job - kudos to you all! Let’s not forget the dedicated and always willing number of volunteers that gave up their time to help in any way around the Club. Everyone’s hard work truly paid off as all events were very successful. As we continue to take on the great success of the Club and its member/guest usage this season, we must keep in mind our Guest Rules as we plan ahead over the next couple months. Guest rules state that a guest can be accompanied by a member or be issued a guest card. Below are our Guest rules for clarity: • No individual who is eligible for membership shall be brought to the Club as a guest more than twice in any one month or 12 times a year. • Guest Cards for invited guests of the Club (i.e. regatta participants) shall be secured at the Front Desk before guest may use the facilities of the Club. • Members introducing guests and visitors in the Club will be considered responsible for their conduct while in the Clubhouse and for any debts their guest may incur. • The privileges of guests may be withdrawn at any time by any Flag Officer or by Management. • Out-of-Town Guest (persons living outside of the radius of forty statute miles of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club) may be issued Guest Cards for a maximum period of 10 days twice a year. Guest Cards shall not be issued to guests who are residing within Pinellas County.

In the same vein, Garage Parking becomes an issue during these high traffic months, and we need to remember our Garage is a member privilege which shouldn’t be abused. It’s not a storage facility or a holding spot to entertain outside of the Club. The Parking Garage is available for members and their guest only when using the Club facilities. Reservations are also very important this time year – Reservations for Grille 1909 may be made by logging into your SPYC membership account or over the phone by contacting Mary Lou at extension 250. If you leave a message at that extension your call will be returned within 24 hours. Strategic Plan update and upcoming Master Plan: The Strategic Plan is coming along well as we now have a draft action plan. This plan will be issued out to the responsible parties for owning this action plan whether it be staff, committees, and/or the Board. Once everyone has had the chance to review the plan, add to and comment on, it will go back to the Long-Range Planning Committee for final edits. It will then go to the Board for final approval concluding with a Town Hall setting up in early Spring to roll out to the Membership. The Master Plan will follow and take all the detail from the Strategic Plan and create a multiyear plan of improvements to the Club over 10 - 20 years. In addition, the Initiation Fee will increase to $10,000 effective March 1st. I look forward to meeting each of you in the coming months as I make my way around our various facilities.

Cheers

Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM General Manager, COO

A special THANK YOU... to Derby Lane for supporting our 2022 Valentine's Day Regatta and the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series!

2022 Valentine's Day Opti Regatta Recap by Todd Fedyszyn, Youth Sailing Director

O

ver the weekend of February 12th & 13th, SPYC hosted the annual Valentine’s Day Opti Regatta. This year’s event was limited to Opti’s only with 270 sailors in attendance from all over the USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Canada. SPYC was well represented with 35 sailors competing in both the Gold Fleet and the Silver Fleet. Mother Nature decided she was not going to cooperate and gave our SPYC Race Committee Team some tough conditions to deal with. Saturday started off with glassy conditions and unfortunately the breeze did not fill until well after 4:30 pm, which was too late start a race. On Sunday, a weak cold front passed over the area and the sailors were greeted with a shifty, building west wind. Two races were sailed in the 200 boat Gold Fleet with Beck Brill from the Coconut Grove Sailing Club taking home the Jane Funsch Perpetual Trophy. Our top SPYC sailors were John Hartney in 21st place, Adam Mendelblatt in 37th, Christopher Shaffer in 48th, Tom Seibold in 61st, and Reid Mendelblatt in 67th. On the 70 boat Silver Fleet course, the RC was able to get in 3 races in shifty conditions tucked in behind the new St. Pete Pier. The overall winner of the Silver Fleet was Henry Latell from the Hampton Yacht Club in Virginia. Our top finishers from SPYC were Ethan Cox in 5th place overall and Reece Bizouarn in 8th overall.

MARCH 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

One week earlier the SPYC Opti RWB Race Team made the trek to Key Largo to compete in the Buccaneer Blast Regatta hosted by the Upper Keys Sailing Club. Thirteen sailors made the trip south to compete in the crystal clear waters of the Keys. Our top performers were Blake Vincent in 15th overall followed closely by Tom Seibold in 21st. Also competing for SPYC were Chris Shaffer, Leah Abrams, Gloria Privis, Bennett Lamb, Pete Caputo, Finn and Ethan Cox, Reece and Scarlett Bizouarn, Anna and Maija Andert, Thomas and William Weidner, and Wesley Wood. Our SPYC Laser Team has been hard at work competing in the US Open Sailing Series event hosted by the Lauderdale Yacht Club. Our top performer was Sophia Fuller finishing a strong 8th place overall in the Laser 4.7 fleet. Also competing were Guthrie Braun, Ethan Danielson, Kate Danielson, Sidney Moyer, Jack Carter, Anthony Smart, and Callen Burnett.

hat is a Poker Run? A Poker Run is not a race. It’s a Club tradition and an assembly of some of the most social and active boaters in the SPYC. On Poker Run Day, boaters meet at the Club docks and show off thier wellcurated boat themes. Upon arriving at the Club they will check-in and recieve a nautical map that will chart their path of adventure for the day. The map includes 5-8 different stops in which the boaters will travel to and collect a poker chip at each stop. The stops are a combination of gracious member’s waterfront homes and local waterside restaurants. All boats are tasked with visiting all the stops in the time allotted. Upon returning to the Club, each participant will turn in their tokens for poker cards and play a 5-Card Poker hand! Prizes are awarded for the Best Hand, Best Boat Theme, and Best Dock Stop. It is always fun to see what everyone comes up with! MARCH 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

SPECIAL INVITE 12

The FCYC cordially invites you to attend the "FCYC Adventure Weekend" taking place at....Fernandina Beach - Amelia Island, Fl.

Thursday, April 21st - Sunday, April 24th

Come by BOAT...by CAR...by RV! AMELIA ISLAND Amelia Island is the southern most of the Sea Islands and the northern most of the Barrier Islands on Florida’s Atlantic coast. It is the only U.S. location to have been under the dominion of eight different flags and is known as the Isle of Eight Flags. It is said that the French visited, the Spanish developed, the English named, and the Americans tamed it.

FERNANDINA BEACH The town of Fernandina Beach was officially established in 1811 and named for King Ferdinand VII of Spain. In 1853 the town site moved just south, and Fernandina Beach became the terminus of Florida’s first cross state railroad, constructed 1856–61 from Fernandina Beach to Cedar Key. In 1973 a 30-block downtown area was named an Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places due to the town’s preservation of late Victorian architecture. In 1987 the Historic District was expanded to include 50 blocks. The original old town called Old Town Fernandina remains and celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2011. Many of these homes are now Bed and Breakfasts permitting visitors to experience a part of Old Town Fernandina’s history. Centre Street, Fernandina’s “Main Street,” remains impressive with its brick main and side streets especially South 7th and North 6th with their historic mansions and cottages. Centre Street offers shopping, restaurants and taverns, bakeries, coffee cafes and most importantly excellent ice cream and fudge. All this can be found in a very walkable, short eight blocks. For the sports minded, Fernandina offers the beach, golf, fishing, sailing, river cruises, kayak excursions, and afterword a drink at the 1879 Palace Saloon, the oldest bar in Florida. Fernandina Beach is a wonderful town to visit hosting many venues for the traveler. April is a very busy month at Fernandina Beach, thus, reservations should be made ASAP. Hampton Inn rooms are blocked for FCYC members through March 20th on a first come, first served basis; additionally boat dockage & RV space may become limited, so book early!

2022 Annual Vintage Motor Classic by Andy Evans

T

he 2022 Show is over and what a day! We registered over 150 cars, then the wet cold weather came in, with the City telling us they may have to call it off! We all met at 6:30 am to hear the word, and finally a YES!!...we were good to go!

It takes several hours to set up the Field, so it was a scramble with our army of 75 volunteers. We secured the field in quick time to allow for sponsors arrival, then cars began to arrive. All were parked, although with slightly reduced number by 10:00 am and opened to the public. Despite the misty rain things brightened and dried up just in time for the judging and award presentation. Crowds built up quickly and there were many happy faces on all sides.

Cobra

We had all classes from early 1920’s right up to 2021 Exotic Classics. There was a great turnout of British cars and some exciting Hot Rods and Resto-mods, Cobras, Corvettes, and classic American all contributing to an excellent show. Anyone wanting to see the show photos, go to our dedicated web site www.stpetemotorclassic.com and click on the Photos link. We supported two excellent local charities this year - The Louise Graham Regeneration Center and The Kind Mouse. (details on the shows web site). Thanks to the entrants, sponsors and some generous donations from our members we raised a record amount. No sooner was this show finished then we immediately begin the planning process for 2023, and would love to hear from anyone interested in joining our committee. It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun that truly gives back personally and also reaffirms the Show and the Club as a foundation of St. Petersburg life. See you all next year!

RV LAND CRUISERS by Angela Kowalik, Wagon Master

Let’s Rally and Roll!!!…

n January, a few of our members visited the 2022 Florida RV SuperShow in Tampa. It’s always fun to see some new coaches and other RVs, find some gadgets, or shop for more “essentials”. Whether you own an RV or not, it’s a great way to see what it’s all about…they have all types of RVs from small travel trailers to bus conversion luxury motorhomes. And there were 2 exhibit halls full of parts and accessories, campgrounds and resorts, tourism information, towing supplies and many other products.

Kimberlee & Phil Skelton at the RV SuperShow

Kimberlee & Phil Skelton were among the many RV enthusiasts attending looking for the latest innovative RV products and accessories. And if you were looking for some hand sanitizer, now worries…the Tiny Tanker Hand Sanitizer would come around to you. No one from our group reported any impulse new rig buys though!

In April, some of our group will join other FCYC members (by car, boat, or RV) for an Adventure Weekend centered around Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island (Northeast Florida). See the ad in this issue of Smooth Sailing. This is a great way to meet other FCYC members.

To join the group and keep up with our events, where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik at: SPYCRVLandCruisers@gmail.com

The Wing Shooters Society came to be in 2012 when four members of the Yacht Club, led by Sandy Schoenberg, • participated in a charity shoot for the benefit of local charities. The organization has evolved over time and now numbers near 50. There are no rules, just tightly held traditions that could change at any time. • There are four original founders that serve as Marshals. These Marshals step in as needed to influence the • direction of the club. Over the years they have not been very busy. They started a nickname tradition, tagging • themselves as Shotgun, Rabbit, Pull and Joey Longshot. • Our Grand Marshal presides over the monthly meetings and twists arms to manage the affairs of the club. Managing our monthly meetings is tough work. A guy dubbed Double L is our current Grand Marshall, four years running. He deserves the respect signified by the double L. • Money Man is our treasurer. He collects the annual dues, manages expenditures on behalf of the members and would conduct an audit if he ever decided we

needed one. He also teams up with Breck Amick and cooks at our annual game dinner. Copperhead handles our weekly shooting arrangements and works with Willy Bain to maintain the membership and email lists. Pumpster writes our monthly articles and reports on the antics of our monthly dinner meetings. As needed True Pair steps in covers the meeting minutes. Communications are handled by means of a group email list. All members with the requisite technical skills can post messages to our group. So far no one has highjacked our system for their own purposes. As needed, Double L has prevailed on selected members to provide a service to the group. Shotgun organizes our holiday dinner. Lightning has secured a bulk ammunition purchase. Dave Miller coordinated the Ducks Unlimited dinner. Frank Robinson made the arrangements for our quail hunt. Nicknames can be self-chosen, but that is not always the case. There is pressure to adopt one. Our meetings are politically incorrect and rowdy, while continuously hanging at the precipice of chaos. Needless to say the 2nd Thursday of the month is a staple in the life of every Wing Shooter. Like minded SPYC members wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Gene Collins, our Grand Marshall. (7727) 385-4878 or genebcollins@hotmail.com

CRUISING

FLEET

by Kevin Cross, Fleet Captain

W

intertime cruising often requires flexibility and determination and the Fleet demonstrated both this past month. High winds caused shifts in plans and colder temperatures challenged even the hardiest among us. Yet, we managed to successfully complete two cruises and one Day Tripper luncheon. Our January Cruise-in to SPYC downtown docks started with “docktails” Friday evening followed by an Italian themed buffet in the Bridge room, Connie & Vice Cmdre Brian Smith, all organized by our Port Port Directors Directors, Connie and Vice Commodore Brian Smith. Saturday morning, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary completed Vessel Safety Checks on 20 boats. Despite the last-minute changes dictated by weather, we had a determined group gather Saturday night for drinks in the Heritage Lounge and then a fabulous dinner at Parkshore Grill.

Cruising Fleet in Heritage Lounge

Our second January cruise was to Carlouel Yacht Club and eight Cruising Fleet at Parkshore Grill determined boats started the journey as rain and fog began to clear. Port Directors, Chris and Ben Roddey, hosted 20 cruisers on their spacious power cat Wheel Estate for “docktails” before the group dined at the club. With the sun shining the next day, cruisers enjoyed long walks on the Clearwater Beach with some heading north and reaching Caladesi Island while others headed south finding Frenchy’s for lunch. Bike rides, the Clearwater Aquarium and the beautiful Sandpearl Resort were also on the itinerary.

Docktails aboa All in, we were rd Wheel Estat e very lucky with the weather, and many enjoyed a smooth ride home via the Gulf. The Day Trippers, while not as lucky, were just as determined. Fifteen hardy souls met for lunch at Hula Bay in rather frigid conditions! Next month, Barbara and Heber Weller plan to favor flexibility over determination by shifting the Day Tripper luncheon based on weather forecasts. With two additional groups heading to Carlouel in February as well as groups to Twin Dolphin Marina and Bradenton Yacht Club, we will have plenty to report on Cruising Fleet Docked at Carlouel YC next month. Stay tuned!

Our February meeting featured Randy and Vicki Stacy sharing their Great Loop cruising experience. And Willy Bain unveiled Day Trippers at Hula Bay a new plaque that will recognize members who complete the Great Loop (which Willy and Caryn have done) that involves circumnavigating the eastern US and part of Canada covering some 6,000 miles. Finally, our two-week Commodore’s Cruise is right around the corner. Over 30 boats have signed up and planning is nearly complete. Our kickoff dinner, which is open to all, will be held Thursday, March 17th. Commodore Waters will address the Fleet and send us on our way.

he weather in January proved to be typical Florida winter weather, cold & windy, but we were able to get one sailing day. The Salties completed the annual Maggie Mug, sailed in Ideals, all in one day. There were six teams each consisting of a Skipper and two crew members. The trophy for this race was donated by Maggie McClure and the first race was held in 1959, and has been sailed most every January since. This year’s winners were: First Place: Nancy Kadau with crew of Marti Cochran & Joanne Simmons. Second Place: Dee Gill, with crew of Jennifer Parramore & Rhonda Whitehead. Third place was a tie Maggie Mug Winners with Diane Fowler, with Jennifer Anderson & Heather Lalanne and Past Captain Sandy Ripberger and crew, Martha Monfried, & Suzanne Boohar, but tiebreaker rules gave the official third to Diane and crew. On our “non” sailing days, Co-Captain Dee Gill organized some educational mornings, including a class about memorable experiences with spinnakers. February 9th was our Annual Valentine's Day lunch with an Elvis theme. Captain Jennifer Parramore congratulated Vanessa Beckman and Beverly Smoak for organizing this wonderful event. There were Valentine Day trivia games about Elvis, and bizarre facts about many of our fellow Salty Sisters. Bijie Ding won the “Guess Who” game, and she went home with a bottle of champagne and a box of Barbara Mehaffey & Judy Clapp chocolate.

O

n a chilly but beautiful Saturday morning on January 15th, Race Captain Suzanne Boohar led seven Broad Reachers on a trip around Bird Island. Even after warning everyone of the shallows approaching the little island, most everyone went aground anyway. Sailing with Suzanne were Debbie Walcutt, Joanne Simmons, Charl Hadfield, Tish Bowden, Charlotte Robbins (first time in a 2012 - Old way of launching Pram), and Carol Hansen enjoying getting out on the water. REMEMBER WHEN - This month we’re still celebrating our 50th Anniversary of the Broad Reachers at Pass-aGrille with some photos from the past showing the transformation of the docks for launching Prams.

Come join us for Saturday morning for some fun sailing and racing. You can participate as a sailor, race committee, or safety ashore. For more information about becoming a Broad Reacher, contact Carol Hansen at Carol@dband1.com.

2020 - Pram Van 2015 - New Dock

G LF GROUP by Connie Smith

T

Things have changed over the years. We went from hauling the boats from the old Paige House, handing them down to the floating docks to the wonderful new dock installed last year. During the construction of the pool, we even loaded the Prams in a van and drove them from the south parking lot to the north end. One thing about the Broads, we do persevere and we have fun, too!!

he Golf Group was able to catch a January 17th nice weather day at Cove Cay Country Club, and better yet, the pairings were perfect (thank you, John Arsenault). All teams were tied and a match of cards decided our winning foursome: Tom Ritschel, Susan Arsenault, Bill Protz and Bob Bedford. Closest to the pins winners were: Dennis Augur, Jack Pyhel, B. John Ovink, John Rogers, Brad Bell & Steve Hamblin.

2022 - Today

Rain, Rain, go away...on Tuesday February 8th at the beautiful Eagles course in Odessa but it didn’t and we re-dated the event to Friday the 11th. Our teams were enjoying the unusual wildlife and scenery but results will have to be posted in an upcoming issue, respecting newsletter deadlines. There will be no Golf Group meeting at the Club this month but our next outing is scheduled for Tuesday, March 22nd at Bardmoor Golf Club. We traditionally enjoy a pizza party with salad and cookie treats. Sign-up to join the fun!

Our Member Guest Tournament is planned for April 14th. The drawing card is an enjoyable day with your guest and other golf group members, lots of prizes, and dinner. Last year we boasted 80 players. So, come one, come all! Details to follow next month. ~“Hit them Long and Straight and Putt like a Champion!” - Contact Susan Arsenault at sueatcp@aol.com to sign up or obtain more information.

RIDERS

CLUB by Bob Frazee, President

T

he SPYC Riders Club has not been able to do much riding in 2022. The weather has not cooperated, and has been cold and rainy on the days we have picked. Despite the weather, in the 1st week in February 5 riders rode to Arcadia for lunch at Slims Bar-B-Q. While we weren’t doing much riding, we have been actively planning several long-distance rides over the next couple of months. Our first extended trip is scheduled for the 1st week in March; 6 riders are planning a 4-day trip to Daytona Beach for the 2022 BIKE WEEK RALLY. Daytona Bike Week hosts concerts, motorcycle races, motorcycle rodeos, poker runs, swap meets, bike shows, vendors of all kinds and lots more. The last week in March we have a 4-day trip to the Florida Keys.

March 3rd

to explore the Inner Hebrides of Scotland and what an adventure it was! Join Matt & Laura for a narrated tour of sailing the challenging waters off Scotland, mixed with plenty of social activities too, and, of course, whisky “nosings” and other aspects of daily living among the Scots! ˚Meet-ups: 1st Thursday of the month - Downtown Club ˚Social time at 5:00 pm; Presentation at 5:30 pm ˚Reservations Required: www.spyc.org or (727) 892-6882 (You and your guests will receive Chef’s choice plated food at $10++/ pp and bar service is available.) The Passport Club invites all SPYC members

who are frequent and or frequently-aspiring travelers.

Contact Patsy Warmack at: patsywarmack@tampabay.rr.com

This will be our 2nd annual trip to the Keys. Those of us who went last year had a great time, and we expect more riders this year. So far it looks like 6 riders are going to Bob Russell the Keys. Next up is a 14-day trip to the Texas Hill country the last two weeks in April. This will be the longest and furthest trip that we have attempted. There are several very good motorcycle day rides in the area around Fredericksburg and Ingram, Texas, so we will split our time staying in each town; so far we have 5 riders committed to the trip. Our last long-distance ride is planned for August up to Waynesville, NC in the Great Smokey Mountains. A few Bob Frazee riders have summer homes in the area and will serve as host for those riding up from Florida. Some of our group made this trip last year and really enjoyed the adventure. Details of each trip will be included in future newsletters. For more information about the Riders Club please contact Bob Frazee at (315) 420-7114 or bfrazee50@gmail.com.
