CHAPTER SEVEN

COMMODORE’S LOG

Summer is approaching and with this “double” issue for May and June, it will be here before my next Commodore Log. Come down to our Club and enjoy the patio and Tiki while this nice weather lasts. Pass-a-Grille pool and patio deck are open Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays beginning at 11:00 am until 7:00 pm.

The Vintage Motor Classic was just a terrific day for the community, those who entered the contest, and for our Club. We had great crowds, great weather and a great buffet set up outside. I was excited to learn I would present the “Commodore Trophy” to a recipient, but then my excitement diminished when I was told I did not get to choose the winner due to the criteria and technical standards that went into choosing the winners. Thanks to all the many volunteers, sponsors and the judges who helped put on this event, which began in 2002. April 12th was Comedy Night and a good laugh was had by all. We enjoyed three different stand-up comedians who put on a fun evening.

Easter weekend was a huge event as always. The weekend began with an Easter Bunny Breakfast on Saturday including an egg hunt. Then on Sunday our kitchen team outdid themselves putting on a fabulous Easter Champagne Brunch. It was quite a spread. April ended the following weekend with our Family Spring Carnival. The energy level at the club approached all-time highs as families enjoyed time together.

May arrives with Annual Watch Party for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday May 3rd...the Derby Bonnets are sure to be in style. On May 9th we will celebrate the efforts of our future sailors with the Junior Sailing Yachting Recognition Awards.

Again, the excitement level within the Club will be high. Come on out and show your support. Last year I was humbled by the true sportsmanship of our youth. They each cheered from their hearts for their fellow sailors who won. I have taken that lesson to my heart to focus on celebrating achievement, even if it’s not me.

May/June begins a transition to our summer season. Many will venture back north and others will begin vacations. Yet the Club will be busy, especially with our Summer Sailing Programs. Sign up before it’s too late. I predict that PAG will have re-opened and will be busier than ever, with a newly vamped kitchen, new menus, and cocktails/food available poolside. Management is planning on adding more seating to accommodate and improve the member experience.

Lots happening, so come on down to YOUR Club’s locations and enjoy summer. Bring a friend. It’s a great way to introduce them to the Club and consider membership. We all share in being proponents of the Club and it’s a great time to refer a friend before joining fees increase as the Master Plan continues to be implemented.

As I write this Log, the target date to complete construction at PAG is late May. Look for updated information in the weekly e-blasts and special announcements for the grand re-opening.

Cordially,

SPYC DOCK RE-DEDICATION & ANNUAL BLESSING OF THE FLEET

The SPYC recently had the honor of hosting service members from the United States Coast Guard to participate in our Dock Re-dedication festivities last month. St. Petersburg Sector Commander, Capt. Michael Kahle, offered remarks at our opening event and thanked the Club for the good working relationship that the USCG enjoys with our organization and acknowledged our efforts to promote boating safety throughout the Tampa Bay region. He also said that he views our members as ambassadors for the boating community and appreciated efforts to bring to his attention any problems on the water from damaged navigation aids to reckless boating.

Along with Capt. Kahle was LtJG Destiny Johnson, our key point of contact for the USCG, along with Chaplain Blaine Hall. Chaplain Hall, who recently transferred to St. Petersburg after serving six years in Okinawa, returned on Sunday morning, March 30th to participate in our Blessing of the Fleet ceremonies. He not only expressed his appreciation at being invited to the Club for the ceremonies but thanked us for his warm welcome to the St. Petersburg community. The SPYC continues to prioritize our relationship with the USCG and looks forward to welcoming the Guardsmen and their families to future events.

The 2025 St. Petersburg Motor Classic

BEST BEST of the

What does "The Best of the Best" really mean? It means coming together in a fantastic setting with an excellent selection of cars and passionate owners while enjoying great music and supporting fantastic charities. We love seeing our diverse crowd of spectators chatting happily with car owners and enjoying the day together. A massive shout-out to our generous sponsors, our hardworking committee, and the more than 80 enthusiastic volunteers who made this event such a success! You all truly make our annual show a can't-miss event every year!

We wanted to share a Facebook post from one of this year's spectators that touched our hearts. It captures just how special and meaningful this day in the park is for many of us. (You'll see it included in this article)

Our goal is to create a fun, high-quality car show with a wide variety of amazing vehicles in a beautiful, family-friendly setting. We'll cherish the memories from the 2025 SPMC as one of our best shows since we began in 2002, and we're already counting down the days until our 2026 event! We can't wait to see all of you there and make even more unforgettable memories together!

Michael J. Glongo's post in St. Pete Motor Classic: "This morning in St. Pete felt different. The kind of light that softens everything. A breeze of the Gulf that didn't ask for attention - just moved through. No rush. No noise. Just space to take things in. Marie and I decided to walk through the St. Pete Auto Show down by the Pier. Rows of classics lined the park - each one preserved with the kind of care that only comes from love. There was a '65 Mustang Fastback in cherry red. A '69 Stingray, long and low like it still had something to prove. Alfa Romeos with lines you don't see anymore. A Lamborghini Miura that could still steal the show. And then i saw it. A 1957 Chevy Bel Air, two-tone turquoise and white. Rocket hood. Chrome so clean it almost reflected memory. Marie stopped walking. Her dad, Len, passed two months ago. He was a true classic guy. Owned several over the years. The Bel Air was one of his favorite - one that made him light up every time. The owner noticed and gently asked if she wanted to sit in it. She did. And in that moment, everything slowed down. Her hands touched the wheel. Her eyes softened. And I swear...he was there. We didn't say anything. Just stood in that quiet, full space that didn't need words. On the way out, we passed a dusty old Packard. In the windshield, handwritten on a scrap of paper, were two words: "Thanks, Dad." Marie reached for my hand. With everything going on in the world - the noise, the stress, the current headlines - this morning reminded us what really matters. Presence. Memory. Love that doesn't fade. Sometimes life gives you a moment. And if you're lucky, it parks it right in front of you. #LoveyouLen."

SPYC'S MAGICAL HISTORY

Take a trip through the pages of time...

Blessing of the fleet ORIGINS

On Sunday morning April 13, 2025, SPYC boat owners and their guests attended the traditional cer emony of Blessing of the Fleet.

The Blessing of the Fleet ceremony is an age old tradition going back centuries to Mediterranean fishing villages in which citizens would invoke divine favor and protection against the dangers of the sea, ensuring safe voyages and good catches. While rooted in religious tradition, the Blessing of the Fleet continues to be a significant event for coastal communities honoring seafaring heritage and reinforcing the values of these communities.

Smooth Sailing November 1986Fleet Captain P/C Bruce W. Watters’ Articles

During the blessing, boats parade past the dock or “ Blessing ” boat where the local clergy sprin kles holy water and offers prayers for a safe season. This practice, rooted in Christian faith, seeks divine protection for those who work or recreate on the water.

The Club’s first recorded blessing occurred on November 9, 1986 the day after Commodore Jack Clark’s ball and was announced as the “Fleet Captain’s Boat Review & Blessing of the Fleet ”. This late afternoon event was followed by dinner & Fleet Participation awards. Past Commodore Bruce W. Watters, Jr. was the then Fleet Captain who later became the “Clergy” who officiated over the blessing for many years.

March and April were fabulous cruising months for the Fleet. On the last weekend in March cruisers enjoyed a festive weekend at the Downtown Marina, beginning with the fantastic Key West Street Party on Friday night, and ending with the annual Blessing of the Fleet and Jazz Brunch on Sunday. On Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary conducted Vessel Safety Checks for 23 boats in the marina. Many thanks to Paul & Julie Murray for managing the VSCs – the Coast Guard Auxiliary was very complimentary of how organized we were and how graciously we hosted them for the 4 or 5 hours they were on the docks with us that day.

The Blessing of the Fleet on March 30th was flawlessly executed, thanks to our Signal Boat, Jeff & Sue Cooper on Good Timing. Jeff ensured that the instructions were clear and the blessing procession went precisely as planned. Thanks also to Rob & Michele Matthes on Talos for serving as the Blessing Vessel for the ceremony.

On March 27th, 28 Day Trippers enjoyed a dock n’ dine lunch at Skybar & Grill at the Skybeach Hotel . There was plenty of great dock space for those who came by boat, and one boat anchored just offshore and stayed for the night. It’s a great location to go for lunch on the water with beautiful views.

At the April 3rd luncheon Commodore DiVito carried on the tradition of addressing the Fleet and kicking off the Commodore’s Cruise. He gave the group a timely and informative update on club activities and then answered questions from our very engaged Fleet members. Chuck Goes , FCYC West Liaison, presented 2 Fleet members with Founders Awards for visiting 13 or more FCYC clubs in 2024, and presented the Yachtsman of the Year Award to Garry and Pam Haas for visiting the most FCYC Clubs of any FCYC member in 2024. Our April Commodore’s Cruise departs April 26th, with 17 boats headed to the Keys and then several boats heading on to the Bahamas. Tune in next issue for photos!

We

have an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled far and wide on motorcycles together. The Riders Club welcomes you to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride.

The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious. Like past years, in 2025 we will be taking multi-state rides and international trips on the "roads less traveled" over the summer months. Future trips are in the works.

To join our group and to keep updated with our events, please contact James Irwin at: JamesIrwin1231@gmail.com

Join us Saturday mornings for some fun sailing & racing! For information about becoming a Broad Reacher contact Carol Hansen: Carol@dband1.com

The Broad Reachers have been quite busy this past month, not on the water sailing, but planning and organizing the next FWSA Rainbow Regatta. The Broads, along with the BCYC Rhumb Runners, are hosting this event on April 21st & 22nd at the downtown Sailing Center. Regatta Chairs, Captain Gloria Davis & Carol Hansen, along with Juliette Clarke, Suzanne Boohar, and (RR) Lezlee Kramer make up the planning committee.

This year’s Rainbow Regatta will consist of Sunfish, Clearwater Prams, and Optis from nine other FWSA member clubs. The Broad Reacher team, led by Katie Rodgers, are looking forward to a great event!

Past Broad Reacher Rainbow Teams"

We enjoyed our final sail of the year at Pass-a-Grille on April 12th, before the Prams headed back downtown for the Summer Sailing program for the kids. Not only will the Prams be leaving for the summer, but many of our members will also be heading off in different directions to travel. The rest of us will get together to enjoy lunch and maybe some pool time at the Beach Club until sailing begins in the fall.

n March, we welcomed Briny Brother Paul Goodman , husband of our dear Salty Sister Barbara Goodman , to a special lunch to express our gratitude to him for his masterful woodworking talents to restore and preserve our five wooden Optimist (Clearwater) Prams, affectionately known as our “Brown Boats” . We also thanked him for his continuing stewardship of their care. Salties have been competing in the FWSA Rainbow Regattas in these boats since 1984. However, most recently parts of their wood hulls had succumbed to dry rot and were no longer seaworthy. Paul took great care to not only rehabilitate the wood of these five classic boats but to completely refinish and restore them to their original beauty.

The Salty Sisters presented Paul with four brass plaques to honor and memorialize the tremendous contribution of his and Barbara’s efforts to safeguard our classic wooden boats. The plaques will be installed in the boats and the inscription reads “I’m So Beautiful! Thanks to Barbara & Paul Goodman”. We are truly grateful.

We’ve started our Rainbow practice and Co-Captain Mik Severini reported that we had a great day on the water with our guest coach, Kristin “KB” Berry and Salty Sister Rainbow coaches PC Barbara Watson and Britt Madigan. Our team will be sailing in both the IOD’s and the Brown Boats in the upcoming Regatta on April 22nd.

A Heartfelt Thank You and a Warm Welcome!

First and foremost, a very appreciative thank you to our newest Past President, Julie Creamer. Julie, we are so grateful for your leadership and dedication during your two years as President of the Ladies Beach Club!

This April, we welcomed our new Board — with many familiar faces returning to continue their wonderful work. It's also the exciting beginning of our membership drive, and we enthusiastically encourage all SPYC ladies to join our vibrant, lively, and enjoyable social club. Annual dues are just $40 — a small price for a big dose of fun, friendship, and fabulous programs! Membership Chair, Helle Getz, has all the details for renewals and new members.

From September through May, we meet once a month to connect, laugh, and enjoy great entertainment. But the fun doesn't end there! Through the summer months, our beloved Mahjong — coordinated by Sharon Ogan — keeps the good times rolling with games each week and a beginners table. For more info, reach out to Sharon.

We also invite you to join our Literary Club, hosted by our new Vice President, Cyndi Deermount — a wonderful way to dive into engaging reads and great conversations. Our Programs Chairperson, Mary Deininger, has some exciting events lined up for our upcoming meetings — you won’t want to miss them!

Ladies of SPYC, come out and join this fabulous group! Leave your worries at the door and embrace our motto: we’re here to just have fun! Want to know more about the Ladies Beach Club? I’d love to hear from you! Feel free to contact me at waterpark831@yahoo.com. While our meetings have been temporarily held at the Downtown Clubhouse during the renovations at Pass-a-Grille, we look forward to being back at our beloved Beach Club location this fall. See you soon!

he Wine Club is a small membership club that is exclusively focused on wine education and exploration of limited distribution wines.
