FEATURED EVENT...

COMMODORE’S LOG CHAPTER ONE
Welcome to November, fellow SPYC members. I'm honored and humbled to assume the role of Commodore for our 2025/26 fiscal year. As we start our 116th year of operations as a Yacht Club, I look forward with excitement for what is in store for us. I want to start by thanking Commodore DiVito for his leadership and guidance for our Board during this past year. In November of 2024, he wrote about being confident the Club would overcome obstacles from the emergencies we faced, and I am happy to report that WE DID! Thank you, Joe!

I am also thankful to my fellow members who have agreed to serve on our Board in the year ahead. We will be facing both exciting and challenging decisions, and I look forward to collaborating with you all to set our future course. I also want to thank and congratulate Colleen Finney for accepting her new position as our General Manager. Colleen has demonstrated her dedication to the Club and steadfast stewardship of our finances over the past thirteen years, and I'm excitied to see what she will do as she takes the helm of our organization.
One of my priorities in the year ahead will be to continue the “Coffee with the Commodore” sessions initiated by Commodore DiVito. I see frequent communication and listening to ideas and concerns from the membership as a cornerstone of leading the Board. Dates and venues will be announced here in Smooth Sailing and through our weekly email updates. And as you see me around the Club, please don’t be shy about voicing ideas or concerns.
Our Master Plan is methodically moving forward. The Board has authorized the Flag to retain an Owner’s Representative to provide professional guidance to the Club as we work with architects and consultants to determine the prudent course of action moving forward. Furthermore, the Board also authorized us to move into the next phase of the architectural process, which is schematic design. Through this step, we will be able to more fully understand the true possibilities and costs associated with a rebuild of our downtown facility. The local firm of InVision Advisors will be representing the Club in a fiduciary capacity throughout this process, and we welcome Jonathan Moore and Pete Karamitsanis to the team. You can expect more communication about this process over the next several months.
We also have many exciting events coming up as we enter the holiday season. I look forward to the “Oh What a Night” as the theme for the Commodore’s Ball on November 8th, followed by our Annual Veteran’s Day Luncheon on November 11th. The Club will be busy as always for Thanksgiving on the 27th, and on November 29th, we will be watching the Santa Parade to view the arrival of Santa Claus beginning the anticipation leading up to Christmas.
Respectfully,
Christian Bergstrom, Commodore

FALL BAY RACE 2025 RECAP
It was a perfect weekend on Tampa Bay for our annual Fall Bay Race, marking another exciting chapter in SPYC’s 2025–2026 regatta season! In the Cruiser Division (PHRF), Jeff Lewis aboard "Slow Bell" sailed a flawless race, claiming 1st Place. Followed by Tim Landt’s "Charisma" in 2nd and John Gardner’s "After You" rounding out the top three.

St. Pete Classic October 11th
Sailors enjoyed an outstanding day on Tampa Bay for the St. Pete Classic, featuring a pursuit start and cool, overcast conditions that made for a perfect day on the water. The fleets were filled with familiar faces, great competition, and plenty of fun!
Spinnaker Class: Gimmi Shelter · Tack Tick · Grimm Reefers · EEEK · Spirit Wind
Non-Spinnaker Class: Advantage · Udacha
Cruiser Class: Charisma · Slow Bell · Mallard · Bumbugo · Desiderata · Rose Theresa · Opal · Jade · Ten Forward · Freyja · Chris Lea · Bamboo · Sonas · Gaia
Congratulations Sailors!

In the Spinnaker Division (ORC), competition was tight, with "Athena" (skippered by Jody Abrams) taking the overall win; followed closely by Mike Danielson’s "Wings" and Eric Lopez’s "Wasabi" in 3rd.
For the Spinnaker PHRF Division, Michael Danielson and "Wings" once again topped the fleet, while "Athena" and "Semper Fi" (skippered by Rob Wetmore) completed the podium.
A huge thank-you to our Race Committee, volunteers, and marina team for another well-run regatta — and congratulations to all competitors who made the day such a success both on and off the water.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
e would like to extend a heartfelt Congratulation to I’Mani Codrington, who won the title of “Employee of the Month” for October. I’Mani has been team member since February, working as a Banquet Server. In that short time, I’Mani has displayed an admirable work ethic, willing to jump in wherever assistance is needed. His curiosity and yearning for learning have also earned him a spot in the employee Culture Club, a concentrated group of employees who have shown a love and commitment to the Club and have been challenged to spread the good vibes to other team members. Originally from St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, he and his family, parents, 3 sisters and a brother moved to Florida.
When he is not working, he enjoys playing soccer, working out and of course is a gamer, which will bode well in his future career aspirations of being a Cyber Security Guru. He exemplifies teamwork, helping out whoever may need a hand. Congratulations, I’Mani, keep up the spectacular job!

In September, the Cruising Fleet completed a nine-day Fall Commodore’s Cruise to Captiva, Punta Gorda, and Fort Myers—the first time the fleet has scheduled a fall cruise in addition to the traditional spring Commodore’s Cruise. 17 boats participated, with additional members joining by “iron dinghy” (car). Over the course of nine days, the group visited six destinations: Venice Yacht Club & Crow’s Nest, South Seas, Isles Yacht Club, St. Charles Yacht Club, Boca Grande, and a two-night anchorage in Pelican Bay near Cayo Costa. Each stop offered its own charm, from beautiful marinas, yacht clubs, and fine dining to daytime excursions on foot, golf cart, and dinghy. Hurricane season was mercifully quiet this year, so cruisers enjoyed near- perfect cruising conditions, just a few showers and a light chop along the way.
The Day Trippers met on September 25th at Sea Dog Brewing Company in Treasure Island. This is the first time the group has met at this restaurant, and the food, service, and views were outstanding. We’ll keep this location in our rotation for our monthly Dock ’n’ Dine outings.

The October 2nd Cruising Fleet Dinner included a special maritime tradition. It was time for this Fleet Captain to pass the fleet burgee to the next SPYC Cruising Fleet Captain, Jeff Cooper . It has been my honor to serve as Fleet Captain over the past two years. No Fleet Captain serves alone, and I want to thank our Fleet Committee whose hard work and dedication are essential to the success of our fleet: Paul & Gini Berry, Glynn & Lavonda Chaney, Susan Cross, Pam Haas, Jay Mabrey, and Paul & Julie Murray . I am also deeply grateful to our fleet members—their engagement, participation, feedback, and support are what make this group so vibrant and successful, and what make serving as Fleet Captain such an enjoyable and deeply rewarding experience.

I look forward to more memorable voyages, lasting friendships, and great teamwork under Jeff’s capable leadership. With congratulations and best wishes, I was honored to present the Fleet Burgee —the proud emblem of our cruising spirit—to incoming Fleet Captain Jeff Cooper .

September was a busy month for the Salty Sisters!! At the St. Petersburg Sailing Association’s Annual Meeting & Awards Dinner on September 12th, Salty Sisters’ PC Gloria Davis was presented with the prestigious Nancy Ammon Award given to a St Pete Sailing Association member that is "worthy of note”. Gloria was recognized for her dedication to the Twilight Series, hand being an integral part of organizing 308 Twilight races! She experienced all kinds of weather and conditions and always arrived promptly on Friday nights, with a smile on her face to run each of the races.
At the same awards meeting, the Salty Sisters’ team, “Salt 70”, consisting of PC Els Wiemken, Audrey Orgo, Lori Leadbetter & Pat Burrows (not pictured) were awarded First Place in the six-month long Twilight Racing Series. Way to go, Salty Team! The week following, included the traditional Edie Pace Memorial Trophy Race, on the water instruction in Prams with the new Class of 2025, and final exams for our potential new Skippers’ Hats. Helle Getz, PRO for the Edie Pace Race, gave a summary of the action. She said we had terrific winds with seven Pram sailors competing. There was a lot of action to observe from the Signal boat. They saw a collision, a kerfuffle rounding the leeward mark, and a capsize with a rescue by the safety boat. Helle congratulated Katie Rodgers for her 1st place finish and KT Trudeau for coming in second.
Education Chair PC Janet Walker , with PC Carol Hansen assisting, introduced the Salty Sister Class of 2025 to Pram sailing. The Newbies are: Courtney Watkins, Eunice Livingston, Elizabeth McCaffree, Julie Simpson, Juliette Clark, and Patricia Kincer and they proved to be excellent first time Pram Sailors! **Attention Salty Sisters, it's not too late to sign up for the 75th Anniversary Cruise on Feb. 5th! If you're a CURRENT Salty Sister and interested, please contact Gail Falkingham at (727) 424-3772 for more information.**

On September 26th twelve Wing Shooters participated for the third consecutive year at the GMAN Shootout benefitting the mission of the FBI Tampa Citizens Academy Alumni Association. This organization promotes a safer community through education of citizens and community leaders on the mission, resources and limitations of the FBI.
The event was a 50 target sporting clays shoot against some of the top shooters in the area. We were rewarded for our efforts with a great buffet lunch and awards ceremony. Although your Wing Shooters did not take home any top shooting awards this year, we did make a good showing with our shooting scores and number of participants. On the lucky side we came home with a bounty of baskets and desirable items offered in the lottery pulls and, most important of all, that warm feeling in your heart after you’ve help raise a ton of money for a worthy cause.

On September 16 th, the Broad Reachers hosted the FWSA Fall General Meeting launching the 20252026 sailing season. The meeting was held in the newly renovated Pass-A-Grille clubhouse and there were 65 FWSA members from nine other yacht clubs in attendance. Broad Reacher volunteers Juliette Clark, KT Trudeau, Captain Gloria Davis, and Rhonda Whitehead greeted everyone as they arrived. PAG Manager, Delora Crouteau did a wonderful job setting up a coffee and pastry display.

Our guest speaker Peter Clark, founder and president of Tampa Bay Watch, delivered a wonderful presentation about the water and wetlands restoration efforts around the Tampa Bay Area. He presented an overview of Tampa Bay Watch’s habitat restoration projects and environmental education programs demonstrating a mission to restore the bay every day.

Visit their website, www.tampabaywatch.org for more information on all their wonderful activities.
The Broads are looking forward to the upcoming sailing season. We plan on participating in this year’s FWSA upcoming Interclub sailing events, our Saturday morning get-togethers, and of course, our annual Christmas Holiday Party and Gift Exchange
