This is another “double” column for July and August and traditionally things are a bit slower. As locals we have it easier to get a reservation when we want one and enjoy less traffic on our roadways. By the time this issue of Smooth Sailing is published, PAG has been re-opened, and members can enjoy the pool and new menus. Our Downtown Club is coming out with its own new menus in July. I know Chef Christian and his team are constantly working on improving our dining experience.
I had the privilege to help give out awards to our junior sailors during the Junior Sailing Yachting Recognition Awards, which announced many young sailors will be competing around the world, including the Marco Rizzotti Trophy International Optimist Class Team Race in Venice Italy. Our SPYC team took 1st place. Congratulations to our International Champions Thomas Weidner, Dalton Cellemare, Tucker Gowens, Constantino Conrad, Bennett Lamb and Coach Puma. From our youth to our experienced sailors, I am pleased to report that SPYC has been invited to be 1 of 8 Clubs competing in the Great Grand Masters Team Racing, hosted by the New York Yacht Club August 21 – 22. Best of luck to Captain Michael Funsch and the team. You’ll see additional information elsewhere in this issue.
Come to the Club for the July 4th Celebration which is sure to be a lot of fun. We have some new options this year which include: Thursday, July 3rd Happy Hour; Friday, July 4th traditional celebration; Saturday, July 5th Red, White and Blue Family Fun Day and Sunday, July 6th Patriotic Brunch.
Ongoing events for July and into August include:
• Our Sumer Movie Program on Friday Nights.
• Bastille Day Plans are being set for July 16.
• Virtual RC training continues the third Thursday of each month- via Zoom at 6pm
• Storytime yoga begins July 19th
• Join the culinary team for their summer nights series
REMINDER that the annual downtown shut down occurs on July 28 and the Club will reopen August 12.
I promised to have good communication with our Membership, and that includes difficult topics. The Board adopts the budget at its June meeting, and they are facing some challenges. With many members facing significant loss from Helene & Milton our membership is projected to be down by about 200 members to budget. That equates to a dues deficit of approximately $700,000 for the coming year. Additionally, the minimum wage increased by law with a cost estimated to be about $400,000. We face fixed costs for property taxes and insurance, both expected to increase. With no new changes to the budget, we would start the year on Oct 1 more than $1MM in the hole.
A special budget workshop was held on May 17 and the work began. At the time of the deadline for this Commodore Log, I don’t know the final budget. What I can share is that our Management team and the Board have been looking at all options to minimize the impact to our members without diminishing the membership experience. No one likes dues increases, but our budget must cover our operating expenses. Capital Expenses are covered by the Capital Contributions and those will not be increasing. I can also share that our Membership Committee has ramped up efforts in seeking new members. We all share in being ambassadors to encourage friends to consider joining the Club. We are one of the most unique yacht clubs in the country, if not the most unique. We offer with 5 locations including 3 marinas, 2 clubhouses and a sailing center with multiple dining options and many clubs within our club for the many interests of our members. Invite someone to the Club.
Cordially,
Joe DiVito, Commodore
Our Junior Sailing Team is thriving — and we couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishments so far this year. May 15-18th, a talented group of SPYC sailors competed in the USODA Team Racing National Championship at Larchmont Yacht Club, delivering results that were nothing short of outstanding. The team earned fifth place in the Gold Fleet, first place in the Silver Fleet, and second place in the Bronze Fleet. Competing sailors included Thomas Weidner, Dalton Cellamare, Tucker Gowens, Constantino Conrad, Bennett Lamb, Ethan Cox, Dylan Thomley, Weston Bowie, William Weidner, Clara Reali, Kaitlyn Thomley, and Vivienne Barrios. Their performance was a testament to their talent, teamwork, and determination on the water — continuing to represent our club with excellence and pride.
The excitement continues as five SPYC Junior sailors — Thomas Weidner, Dalton Cellamare, Tucker Gowens, Constantino Conrad, and Bennett Lamb —represented our club and the country in Venice, Italy, at the prestigious XXXVII Trofeo Marco Rizzotti International Optimist Team Race, May 22-25th. Their participation marks an exciting milestone in their sailing journey and demonstrates the international reach of SPYC's youth program. Not only did these young sailors showcase their skill and sportsmanship on the international stage — they brought home FIRST PLACE overall!
And that’s just the beginning! Our Optimist and ILCA teams are gearing up for an action-packed summer of high-level competition.
In the Optimist class, SPYC will be represented by Weston Bowie, Thomas Weidner, William Weidner, Claire Reali, Ethan Cox, Dylan Thomley, Kaitlyn Thomley, and Vivienne Barrios USODA National Championships at California Yacht Club in Los Angeles from July 28 through August 3. For the Opti ROC (Regatta of Champions) in Greece, SPYC will be proudly represented by Tucker Gowens, Constantino Conrad, Dalton Cellemare, Thomas Weidner, and William Weidner. Later this summer, the ORA Cup on Lake Garda, Italy, will feature nine of our sailors: Tucker Gowens, Constantino Conrad, Dalton Cellemare, Thomas Weidner, William Weidner, Vivienne Barrios, Weston Bowie, Bennett Lamb, and Clara Reali — all flying our burgee on the international stage.
In the ILCA (Laser) class, our sailors continue to reach impressive heights. Competing in the ILCA North American Championship in Long Beach, California from June 12 to 15 are Gloria Privis, Adam Mendelblatt, Reid Mendelblatt, Finn Cox, and John Hartney. For the ILCA Pacific Coast Championship in Tahoe City, California from June 20 to 22, SPYC will be represented by Sophia Fuller, Adam Mendelblatt, Reid Mendelblatt, Finn Cox, and Jad Aberdrabbo Additionally, Adam Mendelblatt, Reid Mendelblatt, and Jad Aberdrabbo have earned the honor of representing SPYC and the United States at the ILCA 6 World Championships in Germany, which will take place June 20 to 25.
Our dedicated coaching staff continues to work tirelessly to support and guide our junior sailors — helping them grow in skill, confidence, and sportsmanship. Their efforts, combined with the passion and commitment of our young athletes, promise to make this one of our most successful and inspiring summers yet. We’ll be cheering you on every step of the way.
Sincerely,
Corey Hall, CMO Director of Membership, Marketing and Media Eduardo Sylverstre, Waterfront Director
Thirty-six members of the SPYC Junior Sailing Program were recognized Friday, May 9, 2025, in the ballroom at the annual awards celebration for accomplishments and performance during the sailing year 2024-25. August 21–22, 2025 – Newport, Rhode Island
By Past Commodore Richard Doyle
The St. Petersburg Yacht Club (SPYC) has been officially invited to compete in the inaugural Great Grand Masters Team Race hosted by the New York Yacht Club (NYYC), honored to be among the eight clubs selected from around the country to compete. Team racing is one of the most dynamic formats in competitive sailing. The action is fast-paced, strategy-heavy, and often unpredictable—much like a football game decided on the final play at the one-yard line. In this format, three boats from one yacht club face off against three from another. Victory doesn’t necessarily go to the team with the first-place finisher, but to the team with the lowest total score— for example, finishes of 2nd, 3rd, and 5th (10 points) beat 1st, 4th, and 6th (11 points). Boat speed and reading of wind shifts is helpful, but often the winner of the race is the team that slows down and controls their opponents more effectively and produces a winning combination for their team.
The Great Grand Masters Team Race extends NYYC’s series of team races, stretching from the Women’s Team Race, Morgan Cup, Hinman Masters and the Hinman Grandmasters. SPYC has competed in the Hinman Masters many times, including the last three years and again in 2025. The difference between the regattas stems from the age requirements of the team. Masters skippers must be at least 50, with crews 40 and older. The Great Grand Masters skippers must be at least 70, with crews over 60.
To prepare, our Great Grand Masters will be training with SPYC’s Hinman Masters team, acquiring the skills our masters have developed over the years. Both teams will benefit greatly from practicing against our hot shot college and high school sailors home for the summer, who practice perfecting their team racing skills year-round. The regatta will take place on the historic waters of Narragansett Bay in Newport, Rhode Island, adding a thrilling and memorable chapter to SPYC’s racing legacy.

We have an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled far and wide on motorcycles together. The Riders Club welcomes you to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride. The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious. Like past years, in 2025 we will be taking multi-state rides and international trips on the "roads less traveled" over the summer months. Future trips are in the works.
To join our group and to keep updated with our events, please contact James Irwin at: JamesIrwin1231@gmail.com

The 2025 Commodore’s Cruise was another unforgettable journey, filled with adventure, laughs, and genuine camaraderie. 15 boats departed St. Petersburg on April 26 and enjoyed nearperfect weather and seas for the two-week cruise to the Keys and back. The cruise included stays at 6 different ports, including visits to 5 FCYC Yacht Clubs: Venice YC, Captiva Island YC, Naples YC, Marathon YC, and Marco Island YC. It’s such a great benefit of membership to have reciprocity with other yacht clubs; they are all always delighted to host the SPYC Cruising Fleet and they show us wonderful hospitality while we’re there.
The only portion of the cruise with less than perfect conditions was the 104-mile cruise from Naples to Stock Island in Key West. We faced 15 knot winds out of the SE and 4–5-foot seas, which made for a bit of a rough ride, but the group pressed on and made it to the Stock Island Yacht Club. After spending one night there, the group cruised around to the Galleon Marina, where we enjoyed two days and nights in the heart of Key West and the Songwriters Festival. What a treat to be there for the festival and be able to enjoy amazing live music at various stages and venues. On May 8th the group left Key West and made their final stop at Marco Island Yacht Club where they had a chance to enjoy dinner together and tour their beautiful new building and grounds. On May 9th cruisers headed home on their own. After spending two weeks together on another fantastic Commodore’s Cruise adventure, it was tough to bid farewell to fellow cruisers and know we wouldn’t be meeting up at the next port for dinner!
Many thanks to Port Directors Camille Iurillo & Joe Petrella, Kim & Art Hansen, Chris & Ben Roddy, and Valerie & Matt DiGennaro. We owe the fun and success of our cruises to the hard work and thoughtful planning of our Port Directors.
On May 15th the Cruising Fleet cruised to the Sarasota Yacht Club for the weekend. SYC is always a favorite destination, and the group enjoyed visiting Bird Key YC by dinghy for lunch and then docktails and dinner at the Sarasota YC Friday night. On Saturday there were adventures, misadventures, and rescues as the group went by dinghy to Field Club for lunch. Al Torres & Jennifer Kirk were Port Directors for the cruise and did a fantastic job organizing fun outings and delicious meals for the group.
While we take a break from regular meetings over the summer, our monthly cruises continue, and we’re all looking forward to our Cruise-in to the downtown docks over the festive July 4th Weekend.
UPCOMING EVENTS FOR THE CRUISING FLEET:
• July 3-6 – Cruise-in to Downtown Docks
• July 26 – Day Trippers
• August 8-10 – Cruise to Longboat Key Club
• Sept 5-13 - Fall 1- week Commodore’s Cruise
by SPYC Saltwater Anglers Tournament Committee
Weather Tests Anglers' MettleAll Seven Boats Rise to Challenge! What a tournament! Mother Nature certainly didn't make it easy for our anglers this time around, but the SPYC Saltwater Anglers once again proved that skill and determination can overcome even the toughest conditions.
Storms rolled through most of the morning, bringing 20+ knot breezes and 5-foot seas out of the west that kept our fleet inshore and working hard for every fish. Despite being unable to reach the offshore grounds, all seven participating boats managed to bring qualifying fish to the scales - a true testament to the caliber of anglers in our club.
The scoring was incredibly tight this year, with most boats managing to boat 2-3 qualifying fish from the 30 approved species list. Here's how the final leaderboard shaped up:
Captain: David Menneke
Loyal sponsor boat for Florida Family Cremations
1st Place Lane Snapper (3 points)
2nd Place Lane Snapper (2 points)
1st Place Grunt (3 points)
Total: 8 Points
CATCHING

1st Place Sea Trout (3 points)
1st Place Spanish Mackerel (3 points)
Captain: John Grazulis (3 points)
2nd Place Grunt (2 points)
3rd Place Sea Trout (1 point)
Special Category
Ladies Prize: Rum Bunctious
Not only did this all-female angler team take home the overall tournament victory, but they also earned the Ladies Prize with their dominant performance!
Junior Angler Prize: The Other Line
Amazing achievement with a 3rd place grunt! Our young anglers continue to impress and represent the future of our sport.
D espite the challenging conditions that prevented offshore fishing, our anglers demonstrated exceptional adaptability by focusing on inshore species. The variety of fish brought to the scales -from sea trout and redfish to Spanish mackerel, grunt, and lane snapper - showcased the diverse fishing opportunities available even when weather keeps us closer to home.
Special congratulations to our newer teams who showed they can compete with the best, and to all participants for their sportsmanship and perseverance through some truly tough conditions on the water.
T hese challenging conditions remind us why we love this sport - it's not just about perfect weatherand easy fishing. It's about adapting, problem-solving, and making the most of whatever conditions the ocean gives us.
Next tournament promises to bring new challenges and opportunities. Keep checking your tackle, studying those fishing spots, and we'll see you on the water!

We want to extend a big thank you to our guest speaker this year, Steve Cambell, retired golf coach from Salem State College in Massachusetts. Come join us at one of our monthly social meetings which are the first Tuesday of the month, at 6:00 pm in the downtown clubhouse. No meetings are held in July, August and September as many of our members snowbird back up North for the summer. Join us Saturday mornings for some fun sailing & racing! For information about becoming a Broad Reacher contact Carol Hansen: Carol@dband1.com
The Broad Reachers and the Rhumb Runners of Boca Ciega Yacht Club joined together to host FWSA's Rainbow Regatta 2025. This year’s sailing venue was held at the St Petersburg Sailing Center on April 22, 2025.
The Broads arranged for a pre-regatta party the night before at 3 Daughters Brewing and provided appetizers and camaraderie while drinks and dinner were available to order.
On Tuesday morning there were pretty skies, hot temperatures, and light winds. The volunteers were great and arrived early to direct parking and traffic, register sailors, put out breakfast, organize bag lunches, and set up the awards table as the Opti, Pram and Sunfish sailors rigged their boats. The PRO, BR Captain Gloria Davis, discussed the course for the Opti/Pram sailors and the Sunfish sailors at the competitor's meeting. Since winds were low and expected to die, Gloria was hopeful for "a few quick starts and a short and sweet course."
Twenty-seven Sunfish, seven Optis and six Prams sailed in light winds and choppy water. Because of the light winds, we were only able to complete one race. This year’s participating Clubs were: Broad Reachers, Salty Sisters, Windlasses, Luffing Lassies, Bitter Ends, Rhumb
Runners, Dinghy Dames, and one independent member.
The Broad Reachers want to thank all the volunteers, especially the Salty Sisters, that helped make this a successful event.
May 25th was another exciting and eventful day for the Broad Reachers at the FWSA General Meeting held at the Plantation Golf & Country Club in Venice. The 2025 winner of the Young Women’s Sailing Award, nominated by the Broad Reachers, was Rosie Simpson!!! Captain Gloria Davis along with Luffing Lassie Fran Mericle, presented Rosie with the trophy and, because of the generosity of the FWSA members and Clubs, a check for $4,000 for winning the award!! The Broad Reachers will retain the perpetual trophy during the upcoming year.
Upcoming Events: The Broads plan on getting together the 2nd Saturday of each month for some summer fun and in September, we will be hosting the next FWSA General meeting.
Co-Captain Mik Severini reported the Rainbow Regatta was a huge success. She thanked our Salty Sister volunteers who provided invaluable help to the Broad Reachers, who along with the Rhumb Runners, organized the event.
Sailing this year for the Salty Sisters were PC Els Wiemken, PC Carol Hansen, PC Gina BowdenPierce, PC Dee Gill, Mik Severini, Katie Rodgers, Marti Cochran, and Jenny Roche. Jenny finished fourth in the Opti class and was awarded the FWSA Rookie Award, since this was her first-year sailing in the event.
In the Clearwater Prams, PC Els Wiemken finished second and Marti Cochran finished 8th out of 27 Sunfish. Congratulations to all who helped or participated in this year’s Rainbow Regatta. The month of May was “sailing successful” with each week filled with sailing in Sonars or Ideals or 420’s. Co-Captain Mik reported that each week we had at least 20-30 participants on the water and completing races each week.
PC Char-Nel Doyle announced she and her Briny Brother, Rich, are organizing SPYC’s team for the upcoming (August 20-22) Great Grand Masters Team Racing Regatta. It will be held at the spectacular New York Yacht Club in Newport, RI. and will be sailed in Sonars. SPYC will send 3 boats with 4 crew on each. Sailing for the Salties on one team will be Audrey Orgo, Jennifer O’Neil, and Lori Leadbetter.
