Annual Board of Directors Election & Annual Meeting page 6 FEATURED EVENT! Commodore's Ball 2025 pages 10-11

Ayear ago, as my excitement grew to assume the role of your Commodore, I began to feel helpless as I watched the news and followed the path of Hurricane Helene. However, I was thankful our impact from the storm center was 200 miles offshore. Then right behind Helene came Milton, with damaging winds. Thankfully Milton passed just South of us, avoiding storm surge yet bringing significant wind damage. To briefly summarize the impact to the Club:
• Our Annual Election and Meeting was delayed by 2 & 1/2 weeks - our leadership came together for a smooth transition.
• Our Yacht Club community took a 7–8 foot storm surge.
• Our staff did an amazing job of getting the Downtown Clubhouse operational to provide an oasis for those without power, despite their own challenges at home.
• Our members said "Thank You" with a floor signing party that raised over $10,000 for the staff.

• Our new docks weathered the storm well, but our Snell Marina, Downtown Boat House, and our Beach Club at PAG were significantly damaged by surge.
• The Club adapted to provide dining by creating a limited menu from outdoor grills to serve all of you.
• The best Race Committee in the world adapted and pulled together to organize and conduct regattas while many were still rebuilding their homes.
Despite all these hurdles, we all came together to overcome and persevere. This is what the St. Petersburg Yacht Club is all about. I could not be prouder to be your Commodore during such challenging times.
As we got back to normal, we had challenges and opportunities and still managed to host some amazing events. Just to name a few, they included:
• Hosting the FCYC meeting in January.
• Hosting the Valentine Day Regatta for 250 young sailors and the Helly Hansen Saling World Regatta.
• February, we hosted our 1st Town Hall Meeting addressing the “why” rebuild, Food & Beverage, and dues.
• March we dedicated our new marina and held our Grand Prix Party followed by our Street Party.
• The St. Petersburg Motor Classic was a beautiful day enjoyed by in downtown.
I was excited to see our new St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation growing its efforts and issuing grants to help our young sailors. My thanks to that Board of Directors for their leadership. If you want to support these efforts, the Foundation will welcome your tax-deductible donations.
Some upcoming fun you do not want to miss includes a memorable dining experience at the Wild Game Night Harvest Dinner on October 10th - our first Halloween Haunted House on October 24th & 25th - Children's Halloween Party October 25th, and our Annual Halloween Party for the adults (with a costume contest) in the Lounge on October 31st. Meet the Candidates Night, for the annual Board of Directors Election, will be on Tuesday, October 7th at 6:00 pm during Happy Hour. (The Election and the Annual Meeting are both on Tuesday, Octbober 14th - for complete details please see page 6). Additonally, join us for the Adult Yachting Recognition Awards Ceremony that same evening at 5:30 pm, prior to the Annual Meeting beginning at 7:45 pm.
• Our Junior Sailing Awards Program recognized the skill and enthusiasm of our young sailors and our Junior team winning 1st Place Marco Rizzotti Trophy International Optimist Class Team Race in Venice Italy.
• And last month we held our 2nd Town Hall meeting with a presentation by our architects, Keith Spina and Tammy O'Rourke, showcasing renderings of what our new Clubhouse might look like. Many questions from the Membership were addressed and the meeting concluded with Members voting on their preferences.
I close my last log knowing I made every effort to fulfill my goal to improve the visibility of leadership and communication with Membership. After a dozen or so "Coffees with the Commodore", speaking to many of our Clubs Within a Clubs, chatting with many members, and two Town Hall meetings, I gave everyone an opportunity to be heard and can assure you I listened; implementing many ideas from those who attended. I thank my wife Theresa for her support and putting up with my schedule. Many thanks to my fellow Officers, Christian Bergstrom, Kevin Cross and Mary Hacker, as well as Colleen Finney and senior management for all their help and dedication. It was a team effort. Finally, I thank all of you for the opportunity to serve as your Commodore.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU!

As we close the 2024–2025 Season, we want to extend thanks to the more than 2,000 memberships who make the St. Petersburg Yacht Club such a special and welcoming community.

October 4th 9:00 am
Welcome to the St. Petersburg Sailing Center (SPSC): the heart of sailing education, training, and community on the Tampa Bay waterfront. As part of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club (SPYC), the Sailing Center carries forward our tradition of seamanship while creating new pathways into the sport for sailors of all ages and skill levels.
The St. Petersburg Sailing Center has been an important part of the waterfront culture of St. Petersburg for 100 years, promoting the sport of sailing for all to enjoy. In 1919 the St. Petersburg Yacht Club formed the Junior Yacht Club (SPJYC). In the 1940 the SPJYC move to the “South Mole” property on Demens Landing. In 1974 the City of St Petersburg bought Demens Landing and in 1976 the partnership between the City of St. Petersburg and the St. Petersburg Yacht Club as formalized to continue to operate the Sailing Center out of its present location. In 2019 the residents of St. Petersburg voted to approve a 20-year lease for the Club!
Each year, the St. Petersburg Sailing Center (SPSC) welcomes thousands of patrons for events, community programs, and sailing courses. From firsttime sailors to competitive race teams, or through our community partnerships, SPSC teaches the fundamentals of safety, seamanship, and sportsmanship. Whether you are brand new to sailing or returning after years away, our programs provide clear, structured pathways for every level.
• Junior Sailing Excellence: Over 70 active weekly sailors, producing World Champions, National Champions, Collegiate All-Americans, an Olympic Gold Medalist, and an America’s Cup Skipper. Recognized as a Top Junior Sailing Program.
• Regattas & Race Management: Hosting 35+ regattas annually, with more than 1,900 boats and 5,000+ participants supported by 100+ race committee volunteers. Honored with the SPYC Trophy for Exceptional Race Management. This prestigious trophy is awarded on a nationwide scale and is named in honor of our outstanding Race Committee. It stands as the gold standard of race management in the country, recognizing the excellence, dedication, and professionalism that define SPYC’s RC team.
ST. PETERSBURG SAILING & THE ST. PETERSBURG SAILING FOUNDATION ST. PETERSBURG SAILING & THE ST. PETERSBURG SAILING FOUNDATION

• Community Memberships: Open to the public, with 350+ adults taking classes yearly and 2,100+ fleet usages. Low-cost memberships provide accessible entry to sailing.
• Adaptive Sailing Leadership: Since the mid-1990s, SPSC has pioneered inclusive programs such as Adaptive Sailing with the City’s Therapeutic Recreation Center, All Children’s Hospital partnerships, Landon’s Legacy, and dedicated Access Dinghy sailing.
• Youth Summer Camps: Each summer, 450–500 campers ages 5–17 learn to sail in “Litte Skippers”, Optimist Dinghies, 420s, Sonars, and Ideals—all guided by SPYC’s experienced coaching staff.
• Special Partnerships: We proudly collaborate with the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg, the City’s Therapeutic Recreation Department, the American Sailing Association, Warrior Sailing Program, US Sail & Power Squadron, and the St. Petersburg Sailing Association, to name a few, which broaden the reach and impact of sailing in our community.

SAILING CENTER PETERSBURG FOUNDATION SAILING CENTER PETERSBURG FOUNDATION

The St. Petersburg Sailing Center is more than a training facility—it’s a gateway to lifelong sailing, competition, and community connection at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.
In December of 2023 the St Petersburg Yacht Board of Directors took another step to ensure that the Club continues to make a big impact within the community by establishing the St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation (SPSF) a 501c3. This Foundation will not change how the Sailing Center operates but will provide an avenue to promote boating within the community.
The mission of the St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation is to support and inspire the sailing community by providing funding, mentorship and training opportunities to grow amateur sailing, elevate competition at all levels and foster a culture of excellence, inclusion and passion for the sport.
Over the last year and a half the SPSF has established their Board of Directors, worked to develop a mission, vision, and core values that will lead the foundation into the future. The SPSF Board has developed a branding kit, and is working
to finalize their website, social and donation platforms. The first grants from the foundation were awarded in the summer of 2025 and the second round of grant recipients will be announced at the October Yachting Recognition Awards. Stay tuned for lots of exciting updates from both the St. Petersburg Sailing Center and the St Petersburg Sailing Foundation.

A NAUTICAL HERIGAGE
The St. Petersburg Yacht Club Story 1909 – 1989
“The St. Petersburg Yacht Club is a place, the watery gateway to the City. It’s a building, a sprawling edifice that grew like Topsy…It’s boats moored at the docks across the street and...at a remote marina. It’s members, the majority of whom never set Top-Siders on teak or fiberglass decks...To many members and sailors around the world, it ’s people, events, incidents and anecdotes. It’s memories, yesterdays, todays and the promise of tomorrows. The St. Petersburg Yacht Club story is legend and lore, as fleeting as a hole at the favored end of the line 10 seconds before the start.”

This is the preface to the first history of SPYC put to ink written by Richard H. “Dick” Funsch. It’s an inviting introductory into the colorful history that enfolds in each chapter and each page of this engaging book – as some would say “ a very good read.”
This early history, as Mr. Funsch puts it, was a “group effort” – Dick interviewed many members over lunch and a few cocktails – that’s probably when the real stories kicked in – with colorful characters such as Charley Morgan, Ted Tolson, Jerry Hammill, Darlene Clark, Jack Powell, Lew McMasters, John Jennings, Bruce Watters, Jr., Dick Jones, Kell Hennessy, Babe Fogarty…Think a moment back to the early 20th century …the sailing craft the attire no GPS the city with dirt streets no Starbucks!
“Thanksinlargemeasuretoa verysuccessfulJuniorProgram, thesailingfutureofthe SPYCisingoodhands.”
Dick Funsch
As goes the circle of life, on August 23, Dick left us here to carry on his pursuits – very difficult shoes to fill. Dick was involved with many civic and Club activities, but none so important as the early sailing careers of his two young sons – Mike and Kevin – who grew up sailing Optimist dinghies in the Junior Sailing Program. Dick served as president of the U.S. Optimist Dinghy Assoc. and founded OptiNews, a nationwide newsletter that connected thousands of young sailors. Sometime during the 70s – 80s he was a Junior Activities Chairman while his sons – along with the likes of Mark & David Mendelblatt, Billy Schoenberg, Harvey Ford, Brett Davis, Rick Merriman, John & Jay Jennings, Chad Shakespeare, David Fagan, Steve Lippincott, David LaCamera, Ed Baird and Allison Jolly – collected trophies like they were going out of style!
Mr. Funsch has the distinction of being recognized with an honorary membership to the SPYC having for several decades distinguishing himself for outstanding contributions, services, accomplishments and dedication …. He will live on through those who will remember him and his words in the legacy of A Nautical Heritage
For the “rest of the story” please check our website for the SPYC Centennial book and for the Dick Funsch interview recounting his writing of this early history of the SPYC which will soon be online as well.
We celebrate and appreciate Dick Funsch for devoting so much during his lifetime to the SPYC and to its members.

Our Woman’s Club “sparkled” throughout the evening with our first event of the year, All Things Sparkling, on September 11th. A sellout crowd enjoyed four different sparkling wines and food pairings curated by our own SPYC Chef Christian, along with education on the wines. Opened to the full SPYC membership, this was a great way to start our new season.
On October 9th our program will feature Ian Prosser, a nationally renowned florist who will lead us into the autumn season with beautiful floral designs.
We are honored Ian is coming to speak at the Woman’s Club. His expertise and artistic vision garnered national attention, leading to a pivotal role as the Design Chairperson for George W. Bush's second Presidential Inauguration; including work with Queen Elizabeth, President Clinton, Elton John, Tom Cruise, Donna Summers, and numerous sports figures and dignitaries. This was all done while humbly serving the Tampa Bay community and surrounding areas. His floral mastery exemplifies a lifelong commitment to elevating the artistry of floral design, and his legacy with Botanica is nothing short of extraordinary.

We are partnering with the Salty Sisters for the Annual Christmas Boutique on December 2nd! This raises funds for our SPYC Junior Sailing Program. If you attended last year, you’ll remember how fabulous it was and this year promises to be as good or even better. This is a great opportunity to shop for early seasonal gifts and contribute to a worthy cause!
Contact Robin Biloski at, robin.biloski@gmail.com, to volunteer at the Boutique.
We always welcome new members to the Woman’s Club. It’s a great way to get to know your fellow SPYC members and we have an exciting year planned. In addition to monthly program meetings, the Woman’s Club has a Book Club and a Mah-Jongg group.
Please email Michele Stella at, mstella_76@yahoo.com, for membership information or find us at www.spyc.org under “Clubs Within the Club”.

Founded in 1989 by one of the most renowned pioneers in modern day floral design, Ian Prosser, Botanica has been a beacon of creativity for over three decades.

Thursday, October 9th ~ $35/WC Members | $45/Guests 6:00 pm Meeting Begins | Lite Bites Included Join us as Ian demonstrates Fall & Holiday floral designs and shares his insights on upcoming seasonal trends. RSVP online: www.spyc.org

Ladies Beach Club, Season Kick-Off at Pass-a-Grille!
The SPYC Ladies Beach Club gathered for the first meeting of the 2025–26 season at our beloved Pass-a-Grille Beach Club. Members were warmly welcomed back, met our new Board (pictured here), learned about the many “Clubs within the Club,” and enjoyed a fun and informative program of fall beauty tips presented by Merle Norman Cosmetics. We also paused for a moment of silence to honor the memory of Chef Jonathan Lopes. Jonathan was a true friend to our Club and will be deeply missed.
» Looking Ahead...
October’s meeting promises to be both engaging and a little haunting, with a presentation from the Spirits of St. Petersburg. Programs Chair, Mary Deininger, has been hard at work

And we’d love to welcome you! Our motto is “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”—and we mean it! Annual dues are just $40, covering a full season of programs (September–May). We typically meet on Mondays, usually the third Monday of each month, at 11:00 am at Pass-a-Grille -- A heartfelt thank you goes to Immediate Past President Julie Creamer, who was recognized at our September meeting for her two years of dedicated leadership, along with her many other contributions to our Club. Thank you, Julie! Want to learn more? Contact us anytime at: lbcspyc@gmail.com
We have an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled far and wide on motorcycles together. The Riders Club welcomes you to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride.
The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious. Like past years, in 2025 we will be taking multi-state rides and international trips on the "roads less traveled" over the summer months. Future trips are in the works.

Longboat Key Club was our August cruise destination, with Kevin Murphy and Sandy Rich serving as Port Directors. The forecast threatened rain all weekend, but everyone managed to time the breaks in the weather perfectly, enjoying smooth sailing on the way over Friday. That evening, the group gathered for docktails under the covered area by the marina store, and the night wrapped up with a delicious dinner at Portofino .

UPCOMING FLEET EVENTS
• October 2 – Monthly Dinner Meeting
• October 11-13 (Sat. - Mon.) cruise to Clearwater Harbor Marina
• Oct 24-26 & Nov 14-16 – Cruise to Tampa Y&CC in 2 groups
• December 11-14 – Cruise-in to Downtown Docks
• December 12 – Annual Awards & Holiday Party
• January 29 – Lightning Game

On Saturday, the group headed to St. Armand’s Circle for lunch and a bit of shopping. That night, the marina shuttle whisked everyone to Latitudes at the Longboat Key Club , where Kevin & Sandy had arranged a beautiful private dining room. The group enjoyed delicious food and plenty of laughter. Back at the marina, the evening continued with fantastic live entertainment by a talented performer at Portofino’s. Another wonderful weekend of fun, food, and camaraderie in the books. Additionally, our August Day Trippers outing took us to Fresco’s Waterfront Bistro , where 18 cruisers gathered for lunch and the opportunity to catch up after a few long summer months
On August 23rd, several of our members took part in the Ladies at the Helm event, hosted by Galati in partnership with the Club. Participants enjoyed an engaging presentation by the Coast Guard Auxiliary on navigation aids, courteous boating practices, and on-the-water safety—and even sharpened their knot-tying skills. The September Luncheon meeting featured Glyn Day, Summit Marine Fire & Safety, who gave a terrific presentation on fire safety equipment and inspection requirements, including a demonstration of how to use a fire extinguisher. Remember PASS – Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep!

Our Cruising Fleet departed on September 5th for the Fall Commodore’s Cruise, with 16 boats embarking on 9 days of adventure. The journey began with two ports where the entire Fleet docked together, before splitting between three marinas and an anchorage for the final four nights of the cruise. Plenty of adventures were experienced along the way! Be sure to check the next issue of Smooth Sailing for photos and stories from this memorable cruise.

Salty Sister, Audrey Orgo , reported about her experience at the Great Grand Masters Team Match Race held at the New York Yacht Club in Newport, RI. Audrey’s Salty Sister teammates were Lori Leadbetter, Jennifer O’Neil l, and PC Susan Wallace . It was a tough race and a very tough competition. PC Char-Nel Doyle was instrumental in putting the teams together, and a total twelve SPYC members participated in the race. The event started with registration on Tuesday and then practice on Wednesday. Racing began Thursday with 20+ knot winds, gusting to 30+, due to Hurricane Erin moving up the east coast.
Later in August, Helle Getz & Barbara Mehaffey headed up to the Chicago Yacht Club, to serve on Race Committee for the Tom Collins North American Invitational . Briny Brother Paul Goodman was a contestant and finished in 2nd Place!!
Back at home, Co-Captain Mik Severini reported that those who participated in our annual powerboat class had a great time. Taught by Capt. Zac Oppenheim , the class was a twoday session scheduled every August for Salties to get handson experience running a small powerboat. The goal is to have more drivers for our Race Committee.
The class was a mixture of experienced drivers, some who wanted to hone their skills, and for others who were totally new to it. Participants did quite a few drills, including some at high speed. Mik gave everyone an A+! **Attention Salty Sisters, it's not too late to sign up for the 75th Anniversary Cruise on Feb. 5th! If you're a CURRENT Salty Sister and interested, please contact Gail Falkingham at (727) 424-3772 for more information.**

The Wing Shooter’s have a number of ranges on our weekly shoot list. An 8 am Friday departure from the club gets us to any of our venues in about an hour. Here’s a list with important comments.
TAMPA BAY SPORTING CLAYS - Located north of Tampa, 10514 Ehren Cutoff, Land O’ Lakes. Hungry Harry’s Famous Bar-B-Que is required for the return home lunch.
FISH HAWK SPORTING CLAYS - Across the Bay at 13505 Hobson Simmons Rd, Lithia. Driving in we see the old orange groves and strawberry fields on the east side of Tampa Bay rapidly turning into new homes.

SARASOTA SPORTING CLAYS - Across the bridge and south on I75. 3445 Rustic Rd, Nokomis. Snow birds plug up the roads during this time, October through May. Summer time is much better. Good places to eat on the way home.
BLACK JACK - 3372 County Rd 526, Sumpterville. The traffic is not bad even though the drive is the longest at 75 minutes. Catfish Johnnies is our lunch stop every time.
TENOROC PUBLIC SHOOTING SPORTS - A few miles east of "disfunction junction", 3755 Tenoroc Rd, Lakeland. This was once a phosphate surface mine area now run as a public area managed by Polk County under the influence of no nonsense Sheriff Grady Judd.
SKY WAY TRAP AND SKEET - 3200 74th Ave N, St Petersburg. This is a 20 minute drive from the Club that we shoot on Wednesdays. They host shotgun shooting games in the morning and evening. Cash prizes but you need to be a really good shot to win.

The Wine Club is a small membership club that is exclusively focused on wine education and exploration of limited distribution wines. Its members taste wines from boutique and smaller production wineries, expand their knowledge of wines, and socialize with others that have a passion for wine experiences. The club meets every other month on the first Thursday for a total of six meetings per year.
