Is it really September already? We concluded another terrific summer youth sailing session with over 400 kids who enjoyed summer camp this year! Schools are back in session, to the joy of many parents. And what better way to celebrate the end of summer than planning your Labor Day weekend at our Beach Club at Pass-a-Grille. On September 1st PAG is hosting a BBQ all day. Come on out and enjoy the pool along with some terrific food!
Labor Day week continues on September 3rd, when Trivia Night is back. While Summer may be ending, activities at the Club are in full swing. On September 17th the Club is hosting a Paella Feast that evening, and on September 13th we are having a Princess & Hero Breakfast. Race Committee training is being offered on Thursday, September 18th and it’s a great way to get involved with being a part of our Club’s rich yachting heritage. Putting on the many regattas during the year could not be done without the many volunteers participating. It’s a great way to meet new friends. Our Entertainment Committee has organized Mezcal vs Tequilla & Cigar Night to be held on September 19th, and on September 27th the Club will host a special Mother & Son Day Out with Painting and Lunch.
A BIG THANK YOU to those many of you who completed our members survey. We have received the responses and are working on reviewing and summarizing the results to be shared with all of you. The Building Redevelopment Oversight Committee (BROC) continues its work on planning for our new building. Interviews have been held with various firms as we search for hiring an Owner’s Representative. This will be a firm that has substantial experience in the construction field and will work for the Club as a strong voice in dealing with the architect and contractor. The top candidates are being vetted and once BROC makes a recommendation it will be presented to the Board of Directors to approve the selection. A subcommittee has been having weekly meetings with the architect and are planning to have renderings of what the new Clubhouse could look like. Town Hall meeting is planned for September 2nd at 6:00 pm to introduce our architectural team and present the renderings to our members.
Finally, by the time this Log is published, I will have sent all of you a letter with the dues increase. My prior Log addressed the Club starting the year facing several challenges. The largest being the decrease in membership due to the impact from 2 major hurricanes and having to rebuild their homes. The Board worked hard at a special workshop to trim costs, but we face many fixed costs for operating, such as Insurance and Property Taxes, which continue to rise. The Board adopted a budget calling for an overall increase of 10% for operating costs or about $28.85/month. The Board did not increase the capital contributions, continuing to follow the Master Plan of $125/month for regular members. Despite these increases, we remain well below the average cost of other yacht clubs….and we have so much more to offer.
October is just around the corner which means our Annual Meeting & Board of Directors Election will take place. The Board nominees have been published, and we will host our traditional “Meet the Candidate” nights; where each candidate will have an opportunity to tell you about themselves. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 14th. Polls open from 11:30 am until 7:00 pm. That evening the Annual Meeting will begin with the revamped Adult Yachting Recognition Awards. As a preeminent yachting club, come to the meeting and share the joy in honoring these outstanding sailors and cruisers. Finally, the Commodore's Ball will be held on Saturday, November 8th. Theresa and I (mostly Theresa) are planning something different. Our theme will be “Oh, What a Night” and we have a great show planned, guaranteed to get you on your feet. It's a great time to come on down to the Club before our peak season begins. Many activities, great staff, and new menus in all our dining outlets. Bring a friend and introduce them to what we have to offer.
Cordially,
Joe DiVito, Commodore

As a St. Petersburg native, the SPYC has been a meaningful part of my life for decades. From Sunday brunches to milestone celebrations, many of my family’s traditions were shaped at the Club. I became a member in 2008 and now, with a young family of my own, the Club continues to be a place where we gather, celebrate, and connect—not just with each other, but also with the incredible SPYC community. I’m actively involved, serving on both the Port Committee and the House & Grounds Committee. Professionally, I began my career as a mental health counselor and now work as a business consultant, always focused on helping people and organizations reach their full potential. I’m seeking a position on the Board of Directors to support the Club’s continued growth while honoring its legacy—especially as we approach a pivotal time of transformation and opportunity.
I grew up sailing Lightnings and met my husband at a North American Championship in 1978. Our families had visited the St. Petersburg Yacht Club for winter regattas, and with those fond memories, we left the cold white north for St. Petersburg in 1990. We jumped into all things SPYC sailing: Snipes, PHRF, NOOD, Key West, and Isla del Sol races. To give back, I joined various committees and volunteered for Race Committee.
In 1984 I founded a successful creative business and served as president of our national trade association. I’ve been a member of several non-profit boards, and served many years on the City’s Public Arts Commission, my final two as Chair. I consider SPYC to be a major asset to the City of St. Petersburg and champion our sailing heritage and traditions. I respect where we have been and wish to see us succeed in the future.
I became a member of the Club back when there was virtually NOTHING else to do in STP. Now in addition to the Vinoy, and STP Country Club stepping up their facilities, there are a gazillion restaurant options that compete with our Club. I was asked to run for the Board. I was on the H&G Committee and am thrilled to have helped us “finally” get a pool table!!! I am also on the Membership and BROC committees. The Club has some very challenging yet exciting goals in the near future and I believe I can be of assistance. Career - full time in real estate since graduating college in 1985; Family - wife (Donna, a Board-Certified Trial Attorney) and I have been together for 30 years; three sons (all named Felix) are at University of Tampa, University of Florida (Engineering) and West Point (now a Yuk - 2nd Year Cadet).
As a St. Petersburg native, I have sailed around the world for SPYC since 1974, winning at the National, North American, and World levels. I remain active racing boats large and small locally and around the country, including helping grow SPYC’s presence on the adult team racing circuit. I am blessed with having known the people who shaped the Club over the past several decades, and of hearing their stories of those who preceded them.
Additional knowledge comes from my dad, who interviewed the “old timers” for the history of SPYC that he first wrote in 1989. SPYC is special to me, as the Club has enhanced my life immeasurably. Forever grateful, I welcome the opportunity to help SPYC thrive in St. Pete’s renaissance locally while maintaining its yachting preeminence nationally.

KEVIN
I was raised on the Gulf Coast of Texas, with sailing a life-long pursuit. Initially sailing a home-built lateen rigged boat, then progressing to larger and faster boats; my racing career was in Hobie 16’s then Olympic-class Tornado catamarans. With my late spouse, we graduated to coastal cruising on a 38-foot Beneteau. Moving to St Petersburg came in 2000, returning to the US after overseas assignments optimizing processes in a mix of industries. I have been an SPYC member since 2003. I feel it is crucial to support the SPYC yachting legacy and community as a member of the Board. After retiring from Spectrum in 2019, I joined SPYC Race Committees to support others in the sailing community. As a member of the Ocean Racing Committee I serve as Event Chairman of the Regata del Sol al Sol. I am also a US Sailing-Certified Club PRO and a proud “Briny Brother”.
Active Boat Member Since 2023
Originally from New England, my love of boating began early, spending weekends on my grandfather’s yacht at Bass Haven Yacht Club. After moving to Florida in 1993, I built a career in construction and now serve as Co-President of iConstructors, a commercial general contracting firm based in Tampa. As my children left for college, I returned to the water and joined SPYC in 2023. I quickly became active in the Cruising Fleet and recently served as a Port Director. I’ve greatly enjoyed the camaraderie of the Cruising Fleet and the broader SPYC community. Professionally, I bring over 30 years of experience in construction management. I currently serve on the House & Grounds Committee and am part of the sub-committee selecting an Owner’s Representative for the downtown clubhouse rebuild. I’m also a member of Pasadena Yacht & Country Club, where I sit on the Cruising Fleet Board and currently serve as Fleet Captain. I would be honored to help guide SPYC’s future.
BEVERLY SMOAK Active Member Since 1998
Born in Panama City, FL where I grew up boating, fishing, and water skiing with my family. I’ve lived in Tampa Bay for over 40 years where I grew my love of bigger boats and catching bigger fish. Graduated from University of Florida, Licensed Florida CPA. During my 23-year career at TECO Energy, Inc., I was responsible for corporate financial reporting, auditing, and budgets. As Accounting Manager in the independent power industry, I was responsible for project cost accounting of $3.5 billion in US and international power plant assets under construction. Served as CFO for 10 years at International Ship Repair & Marine Services, Inc. - a full-service shipyard in Port Tampa Bay. I am honored to be considered for the SPYC Board and will work to preserve and further advance our Club’s rich sailing legacy. Additionally, my career experiences will make positive contributions in the oversight of our coming capital projects.
Resident of Pass-a-Grille Beach and joined SPYC January 2023. I currently serve on the Finance Committee. This role has provided me with insight into the Club’s financial and administrative operations. I am a native of Saginaw, Michigan - graduate of Michigan State University in Marketing & Finance. Employment: Marketing/Sales for Alcoa and Boise Cascade, and have been married for 39 years; parents of three daughters and six grandchildren. I started a successful promotional products company in Bethesda, Maryland and served as Secretary/Treasurer of Mark Sullivan Consulting. I am an active member of women’s golf at St. Petersburg Country Club and Columbia Country Club, Chevy Chase, Maryland. I believe my education, business background, membership at other clubs, and experience on the Finance Committee brings a broad and valuable perspective that will serve me well as a member of the Board. I will bring energy, dedication, and collaboration if selected for this position.

Since joining our Club in 2021, I have become actively involved in the Entertainment Committee. I come from a hospitality family in NYC having been involved in the restaurant and hotel business all my life. I was an attorney in New York City for over 20 years and formerly an Administrative Law Judge. I believe I am uniquely qualified to serve on the Board because I bring a myriad of experiences that will well serve our Board including legal, hospitality and management. Here are my experiences that would add value to the Board and our Club at large: 25 years of experience in the Hotel & Restaurant Industry; 20 Years of legal experience; Life Member - The New York Athletic Club (I served on the Social Activities Committee for 8 years); Member - Metropolitan Club, NYC; Past Governor of the National Arts Club; Chaired the Admissions Committee and Rules Ombudsman Committee.
Born and raised in St. Petersburg, I earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of South Florida and currently work as a Financial Advisor at Raymond James. I’m happily married with two children, and we are proud members of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. The Club has been an important part of my life since childhood. I became an active member at 21, and my most meaningful memory was meeting my wife here 13 years ago. Today, I enjoy watching our children grow up at SPYC while we spend time together boating, sailing, and fishing. I’ve had the privilege of serving on the Board and several committees while gaining a strong understanding of the Club’s operations and long-term needs. I believe my deep involvement, family-focused perspective, professional experience and lifelong passion for the water uniquely qualify me to serve again on the SPYC Board of Directors.

I am eager to transition into a more strategic leadership role within the company. YANNETTI Intermediate Member Since 2024
As a proud member since early 2023, I’ve come to deeply appreciate everything that makes the St. Petersburg Yacht Club so special—its strong sense of community, rich tradition, and welcoming spirit. I’m originally from Northern New Jersey and now proud to call St. Pete home. Professionally, I serve as Director of Financial Planning and an advisor at Taylor Financial, where I’ve built a boutique wealth management and family office practice. Before relocating, I volunteered as the Vice President of my hometown Board of Education, gaining valuable experience making thoughtful decisions and representing a diverse community. Outside of work, I’m an Ironman triathlete, ultra marathoner, fisherman, and die-hard Tampa Bay sports fan. Whether on the water or around the Club, I show up with energy, curiosity, and a team-first mindset. I’d be honored to bring that spirit to the Board and help SPYC continue to thrive.

Many SPYC members are very happy to finally have our sister at the beach open its doors after many months of last fall due to hurricane damag e –three of them: Debbie, Helene & Milton! PAGYC has had a few “facelift but none like this. Please rea d on….
-Grille Yacht Club was a haunt to many downtown SPYC members who desired a club of their own on the beach. Included in the eight founding fathers was Lew McMasters , p/c Alfred “ Al” Gandy –whose brother was p/c George “Dad” Gandy [builder of the Gandy Bridge] and nephew “Gidge” Gandy [one of the founders of the St. Pete to Habana race ]. The first commodore was George B. Chase followed by Al Gandy in 1937 and Lew McMasters in 1939. [Lew was founder of the SORC - Southern Ocean Racing Circuit.]
After acquiring the property at 2301 -Grille Way, the clubhouse was quickly built and designed to accommodate Men Only” atmosphere. [Wasn’t long however until women came on board...] On July 4th of that year, the new club hosted a regatta that attracted racers and cruisers from the Tampa Bay area. During the 1940s, PAGYC was an active sailing and social club and a popular destination for sailor ’s and cruisers alike.
In 1960, with the help of the ladies’ auxiliary and their fund raising activities, the aging building was razed for a parking lot and replaced with the present clubhouse.
In 2000, the 40 year old club had reached its shelf life and a few PAGYC members were determined to save it. The members approached SPYC with a purchase option; our members voted on it; and in 2007 the acquisition of the Pass-A-Grille Yacht Club was finalized. P/Cs Fred Bickley, Joe Klingel & Tito Vargas took the lead in a crash program to renovate the clubhouse, docks and parking lot. Summer of 2008, SPYC at Pass -A-Grille opened its doors to a 4th of July celebration!
A m a j o r remodel of Pass-A-Grille was completed in 2022, which included updating the bathrooms and t he docks – the biggest ticket item was the addition of the pool! Fraze Design group was the architectural firm retained for this renovation. 2024 the hurricanes came! PAG was rendered totally out of commission from 3 -4 feet of water surge. After restoration the Club was finally able to open its doors to members July of 2025.

This past Fourth of July, our Club was honored once again by the participation of the United States Coast Guard’s Color Guard from Sector St. Petersburg. The Guardsmen presented the Colors during our indoor festivities in the afternoon and then proceeded down to the front of the Club and lowered the flag at dusk. Their service and their professionalism remind all of us of why the Fourth of July celebration is so important and how fortunate we are to be Americans. We have been especially thankful for our growing partnership with the Coast Guard and they have continued to play a role in important Club events such as our dock rededication, fleet blessings and of course, the Fourth of July festivities among many others.
Special thanks to LTJG Destiny Johnson for her hard work coordinating this event with us. We also want to acknowledge the Color Guard of MST1 Clay Kilpatrick, MST 3 Jayson Simmons, MST 3 Pat Boisvert and MST 3 Johann Russell. We thank them and their families for their

The Summer of 2025 has been an incredible adventure for both our new sailors and our seasoned youth racers. With more than 450 students participating in sailing and fishing camps, our summer programs offered the perfect opportunity to make new friends while learning valuable skills. Campers explored wind dynamics, sail trim, and most importantly, how to work together as a team.
While our newest sailors were learning the ropes, our youth racing teams were busy representing SPYC around the world. Our Opti sailors traveled to Italy, Greece, and California, while our Laser sailors spent much of the summer competing on the West Coast. It has been inspiring to watch the tremendous progress our sailors have made over the past year, both at home and abroad. The future of SPYC sailing is bright!

Join us Saturday mornings for some fun sailing & racing! For information about becoming a Broad Reacher contact Carol Hansen: Carol@dband1.com
The Broad Reachers continued to meet for lunch the second Saturday of each month during the summer. Some of the regular attendees were Captain Gloria Davis, Race Captain Juliette Clark, Katie Rodgers, Carol Hansen, Audry Orgo, Mik Severini, Barbara Watson, and Rosie Watters. Even though we couldn’t sail during the summer we did enjoy the camaraderie and conversations hanging out at the pool and enjoying the wonderful poolside summer menu.
The Broads look forward to hosting the September FWSA General Meeting on September 16th at the diligently restored Pass-a-Grille clubhouse. It will be an exciting gathering as the newly elected FWSA officers unveil the 2025-2026 season. Our special speaker for the meeting will be Peter Clark, Founder and President of Tampa Bay Watch. Peter will present an overview of Tampa Bay Watch's habitat restoration projects and environmental education programs demonstrating a mission to restore the bay every day.
The Broad Reachers invite and encourage women members of SPYC to join us at Pass-a-Grille on Saturday mornings, as we sail for fun and work on our sailing and racing skills. There is no such thing as “too little” experience to join the Broad Reachers. We’ll help you learn and have fun doing it!
There was no sailing this summer... let’s enjoy some Broad Reacher sailing history!

Wehave an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled far and wide on motorcycles together. The Riders Club welcomes you to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride.
The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious. Like past years, in 2025 we will be taking multi-state rides and international trips on the "roads less traveled" over the summer months. Future trips are in the works.

Throughout the height of summer, our Cruising Fleet has enjoyed monthly cruises and Day Trippers outings, braving the heat to share special times on the water with friends.
In June the Cruising Fleet spent a beautiful weekend at Twin Dolphin Marina . Kim & Art Hansen were Port Directors and planned a fantastic weekend with a few fun surprises, including pre-dinner cocktails at a speakeasy, and an after-dinner laser show at the Bishop Science Museum with music from The Red Hot Chili Peppers . Friday night docktails at the pool were followed by dinner at Pier 22 , and dinner Saturday night was a special treat at Taverna Toscana . Another weekend of amazing food, adventures, and camaraderie.
The Day Trippers met in June by boat and car for a fun-filled outing at The Big Catch , and in July, 24 cruisers gathered at our recently opened Pass-a-Grille Beach Club for a fantastic lunch!
In July, 20 Cruising Fleet boats participated in our Cruisein to the downtown docks to enjoy the July 4th festivities together. Frank & Jackie Robinson were Port Directors for the 3-day cruise, successfully herding 45 fleet members through a range of activities over the weekend. The group enjoyed docktails in the Commodore’s Room Thursday night, followed by a wonderful dinner in 1909. Other activities included dinner at Parkshore Grill , docktails on the event pier at the dock, participating in the Club’s festive July 4th and 5th activities, and of course a perfect view of the spectacular fireworks show on the 4th.
Longboat Key Club Moorings was the destination of our August cruise. Cruisers were able to take advantage of the beautiful pool, beach, and restaurants at the Longboat Key Resort just down the street from the marina. Thanks to Kevin Murphy & Sandy Rich for serving as Port Directors and planning great docktails, dinners, and activities, with amazing after dinner entertainment at Portofino.
Sept. 4: Luncheon meeting – Speaker is Glyn Day, VPSummit Marine Fire & Safety, speaking on fire suppression systems and related fire and marine safety.
Sept. 5-13 – One-week Fall Commodore’s Cruise
Oct. 11-13 – Clearwater Harbor Marina and the Tedeschi Trucks Concert
October & November – Cruise to Tampa Y&CC in 2 groups: Oct. 24-26 & Nov. 14-16

arlier this year Frank Robinson handed the reigns as Wing Shooters Grand Marshall to Dave Miller. The Wing Shooters are grateful for the leadership Frank has provided during his service. Here’s a little background about Frank. While growing up Frank, who could never ever sit still, developed his love for the outdoors, both hunting and fishing in NE Florida and dreamed of becoming a geologist.
However early in his first year of college he found geology was not what he was expecting. After a similar experience in accounting he pursued a degree in Political Science. This was augmented with an internship in the US House of Representatives. He earned his degree in 1984 from Valdosta State. After a couple of years working sales in the business equipment industry Frank took a position with a small company, Precision Orthopedics, distributing Intermedics Orthopedics products. All 4 members of this company directly assisted surgeons during joint replacement surgery. Frank became an owner and the company rapidly expanded their orthopedic product line. The company grew to 40 sales representatives with an additional 40 support staff. Frank attributes his success to the gift of gab which he admits kept him in trouble in high school. The company was sold in 2018 and Frank retired.
Frank and spouse Jackie joined the Yacht Club in 2020 and have become active members of the Cruising Fleet and Wing Shooters Society. As a Wing Shooter, Frank has been tagged as Smiles for obvious reasons.
Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Dave Miller: dmillerd@mac.co.com

The 116th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac Presented by Wintrust took place July 18-22 on Lake Michigan. The prestigious “Mac” is the oldest freshwater sailing race in the world at 333 statute miles which is about 290 nautical miles. The race starts just off Navy Pier in Chicago and ends between the Round Island Lighthouse and Windermere Point near Mackinac Island, Michigan.
This year, our Salty Sisters PC Gina Bowden-Pierce, Helle Getz, Barbara Mehaffey, PC Jennifer Parramore and Gail Poffenberger , along with Briny Brothers Peter Hood and Tom Poffenberger, served on Race Committee for the “Mac”. Duties ran the gamut from pre-race preparations, registration, working the start and finish lines, and docking to presenting the flags and awards to the winners. It was a busy, intense and exhilarating experience for all involved in this great sailing event.
Back here at home, the Salty Sisters spent the first Wednesday of downtown shutdown at the Pass-aGrille pool. There were a total of 32 Salties in attendance, some enjoyed a rousing game of pool volleyball, while others sunned, floated, and tried to stay cool. PAG Manager, Delora had a nice buffet lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, mac & cheese, salads, etc. Cathy Lasky , along with her “crew”, PC Dee Gill & PC Jennifer Paramore , sailed to PAG Tuesday evening for pre-pool party on the dock. As the summer ends, the Salty Sisters are looking forward to getting back into their boats for the next sailing season starting with our annual powerboat training and refresher course in August. **Salty Sisters, if you're interested in the 75th Anniversary Cruise, please contact Gail Falkingham at (727) 424-3772.**
