FEATURED EVENT...
New Year's Eve "Night of Magic"
2025 Commodore's Ball Highlights pages 4 - 5
2024 - 2025 Yachting
Recognition Awards - pages 8 - 9

Dear Fellow SPYC members,
We are grateful that the Tampa Bay region and our SPYC facilities were spared any impact from this year’s tropical storm season. We are already in December, and the holiday season is upon us. Our Club is very busy with numerous annual memberfavored events.

I stated last month that I will continue the “Coffee with the Commodore” sessions, and I (we) will, but under a new heading. Going forward, these informal sessions with come on the calendar as “Leadership Listens”. The intent is for both my fellow Flag Officers, as well as some of the Directors of the Board, to also be involved. I believe it is important that our entire membership has the opportunity to get to know the folks who we elect to serve as Directors, outside of the “stomp speeches” delivered leading up to our annual election and meeting each year. We have put placeholders on the calendar throughout the next year, and the first session will be on December 18th at 5:30 pm in the Ballroom.
“Oh What a Night” we had celebrating our annual Commodore’s Ball tradition on November 8th. This evening, we honored Past Commodore Joe DiVito and his wife Theresa for their commitment and service over the past year (well, really four years!). The downtown Club looked wonderful, and our always dedicated staff did a superb job taking care of us all throughout the evening.
By the time you read this log, we will also have a new Controller in place. This hire is a result of Colleen Finney accepting the position of General Manager back in September. We are also conducting a search for an Assistant General Manager (AGM), who will help Colleen with both operational oversight and budget adherence. For those who have been members for a longer time, you may remember we operated under a similar structure a while back, and your Board found revisiting this structure was the right course for the Club at this time. We expect to make an announcement about the AGM selection in early 2026.
We have many popular events coming up in December, and you can enjoy all of these with the backdrop of a beautifully decorated Clubhouse. It is most definitely “beginning to look a lot like a lot like Christmas”. Please be sure to make your reservations early: •December 2nd - The 25th Annual Christmas Boutique
• December 5th - Holiday Sweater Christmas Party
• December 20th - Annual Holiday Show Featuring the Dazzler Band, a family friendly event and complimentary to attend
• December 20th and 21st - North Pole Adventure Pajama Party
• December 31st - New Year’s Eve Party for Downtown in the evening, as well as a special New Year’s Eve Kids Celebration for our youngest members at Pass-a-Grille in the afternoon on that day.
• January 1, 2026 - And not to be forgotten, our Annual Complimentary Eggnog Party to bring us into the new year!
January begins a busy few months on the water, with four regatta events scheduled: The Salt Pines Cup January 9-11; Master Drive Team Racing January 10-11; USODA Team Race Midwinters January 16-19; John Jennings Memorial Regatta January 31st. Be sure to look at the full calendar of events in this issue for even more opportunities to enjoy your Club.
Respectfully, Christian Bergstrom, Commodore

The 2025–2026 fiscal year is off to a wonderful start, and as we move into the holiday season, we’d like to take a moment to share a few important reminders. These guidelines help us preserve the warm, welcoming, and respectful atmosphere that makes the St. Petersburg Yacht Club such a special place for everyone.
» We are proud that the Club offers spaces designed for all members — from our youngest members to our longstanding members. The Commodore’s Club has recently been updated to include an expanded children’s game area, as well as a quiet dining section for those seeking a more peaceful environment away from the hustle and bustle.
» For those enjoying the Heritage Lounge and Regatta Room, please remember that parents must be present in the same room and actively supervising their children under the age of 13. In addition, children should refrain from being on the dance floor after 9:00 pm, as the area transitions into a bar and lounge setting.
» The St. Petersburg Yacht Club takes great pride in its long-standing reputation and rich nautical heritage. To honor that tradition, the House & Grounds Committee maintains a Club-wide Dress Code designed to ensure all members feel welcome while maintaining our shared standards. This Dress Code applies to all members, family members, guests, and children ages 13 and older. Members are responsible for apprising their guests of these standards prior to visiting any Club property. Details can be found on our Club Information page at www.spyc.org .
Please reach out to our Membership Department for information about joining the Club at: (727) 892-6888 membership@spyc.org

"Oh, What a Night" ... Commo d o re ' s Ball Commo d o re ' s Ball
November 8, 2025

The tradition of planning for the future has shaped our Club for over a century, guiding each generation in preserving and strengthening what makes SPYC exceptional. The current master planning process as adopted by your Board of Directors for the reconstruction of our Downtown Clubhouse is a continuation of this legacy.
Our committees, the Flag Officers, and Board of Directors have been working diligently to ensure that our facilities, programs, and member experience are thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of today and the next 100 years.
Over the past year, we have engaged an experienced architectural firm, and an Owners Representative, to protect our interests while guiding us through this project.
After sharing the potential vision of the new club with our members at a recent open house we are moving into the next design phase. We will be adding the assistance of a General Contractor to the team to help confirm the project budget as we take a closer look at the interior spaces, dining venues, and other member amenities.
While the project remains in its early design stages, we are committed to continually providing members with information and opportunities to share your thoughts and ideas for our future building. Please keep an eye out for frequent project updates, a website dedicated to the progress of the project, and updates on potential temporary facilities.

The St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation has enjoyed a funfilled fall season! On November 8th, we were thrilled to welcome several of Academy Prep’s scholars for a day on the water. The breeze provided perfect conditions for learning the basics of sailing, and we extend our sincere thanks to our Foundation Board
Members, coaches, and volunteers who made this meaningful experience possible. On the same day, we proudly recognized our fall grant recipients. Congratulations to Kate Danielson, Dalton Cellamare, Ethan Cox, Fin Cox, and Warrior Sailing on their well-deserved awards!

As we head into the holiday season, we invite you to remember Giving Tuesday on December 2nd; a global day of generosity. Your support helps us continue creating opportunities for youth sailors, adaptive programs, and community partnerships across the region. Thank you for helping us make a difference on and off the water.

Following a federal government shutdown, it’s a good time to remember that the men and women who serve us in the United States Coast Guard, particularly here in Sector St. Petersburg, are under even more stress than usual. While protecting and serving us on the water, they are having to worry more than ever about the health and welfare of their own families. As the Holidays draw near, we should keep them in mind even more. As such, our Coast Guard Liaison Committee is working closely with our local Guardsmen on initiatives and events to help them continue to feel connected to our Club and our community.
Throughout November and December, the Club will be hosting our local Guardsmen for meals, fellowship and to say thank you for their commitment to us all. As those events are scheduled, we will let Club members know how they can participate. Additionally, as many Guardsmen are far from home and away from their friends and family for the Holidays, we will be also making efforts to reach out to them and bridge that gap to any extent we can. Stay tuned for more information on that front as well.

by Joe Kefauver

Fortunately for all of us, the window of hurricane season seems to be coming to a close yet our Guardsmen still find themselves in turbulent waters at least for the short term. Let’s remember that and try our best to serve them during this difficult time just as they continue to serve us.

The Adult awards ceremony for the “fiscal” year 2024-25 was held in the ballroom just before the start of the Annual Meeting wherein 32 adults & collegiate members of our Club were recognized for their accomplishments and performance for 2024 -25. [No hurricanes this year!]
In addition to the traditional certificate recognitions and trophies, eight keeper trophy awards were presented to select individuals based on special merit. This Adult segment of the 2024-25 Yachting Recognition program was a lovely event with close to 100 people in attendance – including Flag Officers Joe DiVito, Cristian Bergstrom, Kevin Cross, Treasurer Mary Hacker and new (but not new to the Club) General Manager Colleen Finney
Many thanks to all who attended the awards – you are the reason this has become a very special tradition! It ’s not too soon to send in your nominations for next year’s recipients!!! Listed on this page are just few highlights. Please check the SPYC website for more photos.

GinaBowden-Pierce,BarbaraN.Watson &P/CWilliamC.Ballard
The 2024 Commodore’s Award was given in recognition of lifetime achievements in sailing, sailing related activities, and contributions towards preserving the traditions and heritage of our Club’s rich history. This year’s award recognizes not just one recipient, but three individuals, none of whom seek public recognition. All three of them created the St. Petersburg Yacht Club Centennial Book published in 2009 to celebrate the Club’s 100th anniversary. This book is an important source of our Club’s history and it is appropriate that this effort be recognized.

The Golf Club at SPYC reconvened in October after a brief summer break with a kick-off planning meeting to collect member feedback for future club events. Our first fall outing took place in late September at the Vinoy . Thank you to Vinoy member Steve Turnbull, who sponsored our club at this event. First-place winners at three under par were Bill Protz, Brad Bell, John Rogers, and Bill Papenfuss . Secondplace winners at par were: John Arsenault, Steve Turnbull, Maria Rawls, and Hunter Rawls . Closest to the pin was Maria Rawls (Hole 8) and Brad Bell (Hole 17). We also hosted our firstever pop-up golf event at Cove Cay. This was the first of hopefully many other informal golf events where golfers just gathered to play without competition or prizes. Thank you to member Paul Calhoun for planning this outing.
Our October outing took place at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook , home of the Valspar Championship. Congratulations to our first-place winners from our October outing at one over par were Bill Protz, Mike McDonough, & Dawn Eckart . Second-place winners at one over par were Martin Morris, John Arsenault, & Barb Deininger. Closest to the pin winners were: Dawn Eckart (Hole 4), Steve Hamlin (Hole 8), Bekah Rush (Hole 13), Martin Morris (Hole 15), & Sue Cooper (Hole 17).
We would like to welcome new members who have joined us this fall: Suzanne & Jim Lavin, Mike Walsh, Patti & Robert Barlow, Wendy & John Hudy, Jennifer & Troy Anderson, & Bill Biloski .

Upcoming events include an outing at Hunters Green , Mangrove Bay , and our Annual Holiday Party in December. Thinking about joining the Golf Group at SPYC? Come join us at one of our monthly social meetings held on the first Tuesday of the month, at 6:00 pm in the downtown clubhouse. No meetings are held in July, August, and September as many of our members snowbird back up North for the summer. Please direct membership inquiries to Bekah Rush at rush.rebekah@gmail.com or join us in person at one of our monthly meetings.

by Jeff Cooper, Fleet Captain

The Cruising Fleet at SPYC is charging into the new season with fantastic cruises, great speakers, and a new look at the helm! I was incredibly honored to accept the Cruising Fleet Burgee from outgoing Captain Debbie Storey at our October Dinner Meeting. Debbie's two years of service were defined by her tireless dedication and unwavering commitment to the fleet, and I'm thrilled to take the helm and continue our tradition of fun and adventure. I’m fortunate to have assembled a terrific committee to help guide the fleet through the next fiscal year and beyond.
Back in October our cruise to Clearwater Harbor Marina was an absolute hit The weather was perfect for the weekend of October 11th - 13th. We docked adjacent to the Baycare Sound at Coachman Park and enjoyed the incredible sounds of the Tedeschi Trucks Band. For our Saturday night dinner, the group split between the delicious Clear Sky and Olive and Thyme. Some of us capped the night off at a local dueling piano bar.
Last month, the energy continued. We participated in the Clubs within the Club Expo on Tuesday, November 4th, where we had a great time bragging about the fun and adventure the Cruising Fleet offers to prospective members. Then, at our November 6th Monthly Meeting, Fleet members Paul & Julie Murray gave a fascinating presentation on their experience completing the Great Loop . What an inspiring evening! We also had two exciting cruises in November to the ever-popular Tampa Yacht & Country Club.
Mark your calendars for more holiday fun and high-octane action with these upcoming events:
• December 11th-14th: Cruise-In to the Downtown Club for the spectacular Annual Lighting of the Yachts.
• December 18th: Daytripper Holiday Party
• January 28th-30th: Cruise to the Tampa Convention Center Marina to cheer on the Tampa Bay Lightning as they take on the Winnipeg Jets.
I look forward to an amazing year of cruising with all of you!

Ladies Beach Club continues to grow, with new members joining us each month. We are a lively group who enjoy great company, engaging programs, and plenty of laughter together.
The highlight of our November meeting was our annual Fashion Show, hosted by Chico’s. Our very own models — Pat Burrows, Barbara Deininger, Chantell Leffard, Marcia Smith, Nancy Bauer, and Marie Vidal — walked the runway with confidence and charm, showing off stylish new looks. We think Ford Models may want to keep an eye on this group! As always, the SPYC Pass-a-Grille staff made our event special, and the lunch was delicious.
Looking ahead, our Annual Holiday Program and Gift Exchange will take place on Monday, December 8. Members can look forward to festive entertainment and a touch of fairy hair sparkle! January’s meeting features a program on Florida Native Gardening — sure to be enjoyable and informative for green thumbs and beginners alike.
Don’t forget about the Ladies Beach Club Mah Jongg Tournament, held at the PAG location on Monday, February 2, 2026. For more information please contact the Tournament Chairperson, Eva Hefner eva12023@tampabay.rr.com.

With the season upon us here’s a Charles Dickens inspired Wing Shooters second Thursdays of the month: Past, Present, and Future. This past month the Wing Shooters gathered at the home of Fred Bickley for the annual Wild Game Dinner held on the second Thursday of every November. In the tradition of the past, Wayne Andrews cooks and coordinates this feast.

This second Thursday of December we hold our Holiday Dinner in the Yacht Club under the careful planning of John Hanner . Pictured you’ll see former Grand Marshall Gene Collins from a past Holiday Dinner.
Every other second Thursday of the month we hold our meeting in the Quarterdeck room of the Yacht Club. But it’s not just Thursdays. Our weekly shoots are every Friday morning and are coordinated by Hermann Amaya at nearby shooting ranges. Throughout the year we have other notable events. A three day Georgia quail hunt, a fall dove hunt, and a few organized trips to Florida shooting venues of distinction: the OK Corral Gun Club, Gilchrist Club, South Florida Shooting Club and Thundercloud Gun Club top the list. Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Dave Miller at dmillerd@mac.co.com.
