COMMODORE’S LOG D

ear SPYC Members, I hope our Double issue of Smooth Sailing for the months of July and August finds you well. While the mountains and cooler nights have lured some of our members away, many of us are still here enjoying our hot Florida summer. But life in St. Petersburg is good. We are lucky to have access to plentiful beaches and pools. Make sure you visit our Club soon to have a cool drink and take a dip in one of our pools. Many of you may already be aware that after seven years, our General Manager, Marc Reydams, is retiring. He has served our Club well through some very challenging times and has helped us establish and maintain sound financials. He has been a great manager and a friend. Please join me in congratulating him and wishing him success and happiness in retirement. Our SPYC Manager Search Committee had conducted an exhaustive search for our next General Manager. I’m pleased to introduce Rhett Robicheaux as our next GM. Rhett comes to us by way of Savannah Yacht Club. He is a true gentleman and has tremendous experience, which will help him lead our SPYC staff. I am very happy to announce that our Board of Directors has unanimously approved the hiring of Mr. Robicheaux, who will begin in August. Please introduce yourselves to him and give him a warm welcome! Sailboat racers tend to follow the circuit north during the summer, but when there’s no lightning, there is still plenty of good sailing right here on Tampa Bay. Our Sailing Center Summer Camps are in full swing. SPYC coaches, staff, and volunteers are teaching tomorrow’s racers and cruisers. We are very proud to be involved with this facility and the way it provides our community with access to the water.

Congratulations to Grant Dumas and his crew aboard Warrior for winning the Commodore John Jennings Memorial Regatta! The award is a rededicated plaque, previously used for the Men’s Club Championship. Commodore Jennings won it more times than any other member. This newly created event is meant to honor his legacy as a leader, a teacher, and a winning sailor known for good sportsmanship. These are qualities which Grant shares with Commodore Jennings.

Some up-coming events to look forward to at the Club include: .July 10th & August 28th check-out the Dance Party in the Heritage Lounge from 7:00 -11:00 pm; featuring the Royz Band on July 10th and the DAZZLER band on August 28th (complimentary to attend). .September brings a variety of fun including: The Match Game Show, Kids Laser Tag Party, and the SPYC Speakeasy...Lots of great events to look forward to! Last, but not least, Happy Fourth of July! I hope to see you all at our Independence Day celebration at the downtown Clubhouse. (This event is complimentary to our members.) Respectfully,

David Mendelblatt, Commodore

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. JULY-AUGUST 2021 | SMOOTH SAILING

“A Fond Farewell” 55

Special Farewell Message From Marc Reydams - General Manager To all Members & Employees

D D

ear St. Petersburg Yacht Club Members, My retirement date is approaching fast. What was supposed to be a six-month temporary consultant position grew into seven and a half years of dedication to this great Club. On August 9th, a new Manager will take over the leadership of the Club. I would like to thank all of the members for their support, kindness, and friendship during my time serving the SPYC. It has truly been an honor to not just be a part of something great.... but to watch this Club flourish, beyond my expectations. I would also like to personally thank every Commodore, Flag Officer, Board Member, and Committee Chair. Your support, especially the last fourteen months under the unfortunate pandemic which affected the Club Members and the entire world, is greatly appreciated. My undeterred passion has been my driving force to serve this Club and all its members. I am leaving the Club knowing that it is in a strong financial position, with a strong management team in place to continue the vision of the Club to a bright future. Included is my farewell letter to the Management Team and staff who have supported me throughout these many happy years. Godspeed to you all and thank you for the memories!

ear St. Petersburg Yacht Club Team Members, To this world-class Club, this business is ripe with unlimited potential. To the rare and wonderful people who make it so, I am forever grateful. I have worked here for seven years and not a day has passed that I have not embraced every ounce of your potential as individuals and as a collective force to be reckoned with by anyone on the planet. Most of you accept that change is inevitable in life, but it does not make it any less uncomfortable. So, please be kind to your new leader and to your fellow employees during the transition. Make no mistake, as rich and wonderful as the St. Petersburg Yacht Club may be, the business of running such can be one wild “bull-of-a-business” to ride and master. Admittedly, I hoped to have made a marked impression and leave you better than when I arrived; but that does not mean our business model is not a work in progress in the months and years ahead. Please know, no matter how experienced, how intellectually gifted, or how business-savvy your new GM may be - he is also human. So, accept initial mistakes may be made, paths filled with pitfalls may be explored; but ultimately, mutually rewarding success is any leader’s end goal. It is undeniable that you are destined to maintain this precious gem to its rightful place of glory. May you continue to give your best to one and all every day; enjoy the journey and steadfastly believe. Several of you have told me my influence encouraged you to be a “better person.” A better compliment I have never known. In turn, you should know your loyal support during the best and most difficult times did the same for me. I leave you having more courage than I knew I had and more confidence that all things are possible. I would like to thank my wife for her unrelentless patience, support, and understanding throughout my tenure at the Club of the time commitment required to run such a great organization. However, like a good book that you cannot put down, the reality is that every good story must have an ending. Such is life. In closing, this is a chapter of my life I will cherish forever. Wishing you a most affectionate farewell ~ Marc SMOOTH SAILING | JULY-AUGUST 2021

Yachting Information Committee by Donna Sue Marks, Yachting Information Chair

t the time of this article the summer Tokyo 2020 Olympics - July 23, 2021 opening ceremony will be taking place - unless a last-minute cancellation occurs. SPYC has been a long-standing supporter of the Olympics -see the front page of this issue and the Featured Article about our “A” Team Race Committee at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Savannah, GA.

It goes without saying the discipline, passion, and perseverance must stay with these athlete’s day in and day out for them to have success. No matter the outcome in Japan our 13 USA Sailors stand as role models for future generations of sailors. As a community of mariners, we should proudly support and congratulate our 2020 Olympians!

Our Club has seen future Olympians begin their sailing journey as Junior Sailors. Hopeful competitors from all over the world sail on our racecourses, explore our Clubhouses and for some of us we have had the privilege of hosting athletes in our homes.

Valentine’s Day Regatta 2021 by Todd Fedyszyn, Youth Sailing Director

T

he 2021 SPYC Valentine’s Day Regatta looked a little different than years with a few adjustments made to adapt to the ongoing Covid Pandemic. First and foremost, the event was postponed and sailed in May and was the first qualifier for the 2022 USODA Team Trials. By changing the dates, SPYC will now host two TTQ Regatta’s which should benefit out local sailors. Also, in order to not overwhelm the Sailing Center, we decided on a maximum of 150 competitors; and the event was only open to Championship Fleet sailors. Day one of the event brought light wind and warm temperatures early on. The SPYC Race Committee (RC) made the decision to postpone on shore and wait for the anticipated afternoon sea breeze. At around 12:30 pm, the postponement flag was taken down and the fleet proceeded on a long tow about four miles south to get the sea breeze a little earlier. Although the sea breeze didn’t arrive as early as we thought, it did start to fill from the Skyway paving the way for a nice late afternoon in 8-10 knots of breeze. One race was sailed ensuring that we would have a regatta. On day 2, sailors were greeted with a nice southerly of 10-12 knots and 4 great races finishing just before the afternoon deadline. The overall title was won by Peirce Olsen with Carlos Beckman in 2nd and Finn Grainger in 3rd. SPYC’s Rosie Simpson was the top female with John Hartney in 13th overall and Adam Mendelblatt 27th . All three SPYC sailors have qualified for the 2022 USODA Team Trails Regatta.

PC Pat Seidenspinner was named PRO for the Mistral course for the upcoming 1996 Olympic sailing venue in Savannah, Ga. In 1995, she rallied a team of SPYC members to provide race committee for the pre-Olympics. The event went so well that everyone committed to return for the main event. Thus the A-Team was born in pursuit of excellence in race management!

My wife, ner, Nancy & Harry Vildibill, Dick & Maridell Weaver. Pam, and I were reassigned to Alpha course and became part of the “A-Team.” Savannah presented many challenges: the course was 10 miles down river to the Wassaw Sound in the mouth of the Wilmington River; we started early every day and returned late each evening over a two-week period; security was high level with numerous inspection points of all boats on departures and return; the afternoon storms often caused many delays as well some intense moments. Due to the experience and leadership of Cmdre Seidenspinner (PRO), the Alpha team came through with flying colors. Still today, the SPYC is one of most respected clubs in the world running premier events year round. As a 3rd generation member, I learned my life skills from the Junior Sailing Program and mentoring from many selfless members. The future and legacy of our Club is in secure hands with the next generation assuming key positions.”

[Epilogue: In the years since the ‘96 Olympics, the Race Committee has continued to excel under the tutelage of not only PC Seidenspinner, but many others such as Tom & Barbara Farquhar & Carole Bardes. In 2007, SPYC received the prestigious St. Petersburg Y.C . Trophy for Excellence in Race Management!]

* * * There were many many Club members involved in the making of the SPYC Olympic experience… lots of stories to tell—this is just the “tip of the iceberg.” We thank all those who made it happen!!!

2021 North Gulf Challenge Regatta by Selga Sakss, Event Chair

N

ine sailboats competed in the April 23rd 11:00 am start of the inaugural North Gulf Challenge - a 319 NM (nautical mile) race from St. Petersburg to Pensacola. The event evolved when the annual Regata del Sol al Sol was cancelled due to pandemic restrictions on Isla Mujeres. A committee was quickly formed involving co-host Pensacola Yacht Club’s Commodore, Tom Pace, and Event Chair, Dave Johnson (aka DJ)...thus the Gulf Challenge was created!

“Merlin “

Winds at the start were a promising steady 16-18 KN. But, ensuing weather conditions lived up to the “gulf challenge” as the competitors were met with 25-30 KN winds and heavy, confused seas followed by becalmed winds in leftover sloppy, rolling seas. “Ruby 2”

Sadly, three competitors were forced to retire early due to equipment issues. Six remaining vessels were met at the Pensacola Sea Buoy finish line by PYC members and escorted in to the club docks where each was greeted with a gallon of PYC’s Bushwhacker’s (with their special secret ingredient and yes, we managed to get the recipe!).

“Pen”

The last boat to finish, however; was welcomed with champagne to applaud the crew’s stamina and determination to finish the race. Merlin was first to finish with elapsed time of 1 day, 05hrs. 04 min. and 50 sec., taking Line Honors and a 2nd place to Pendragon’s 1st place in the Spinnaker division. Flagship (an ongoing competitor in our annual Regata del Sol al Sol) finished with elapsed time of 3 days, 13 hrs. 08 min. and 31 sec. taking 2nd place in the Cruising division to XTC’s 1st place finish. Last month we entered the Club by the East entrance and noticed the mysterious Lady. This month we are recognizing the large cannon that sits in front of her, hidden in the bushes. What is the story behind it? How did it get there? [It only weighs about a ton!] The mystery has been somewhat revealed. Please read on!

* * *

the {Spanish} cannon came up the Gulf Coast from Sanibel Island to Tampa Bay, and somehow salvaged from Ft. De Soto. In 1980, it is recorded that member Walter Colony donated the cannon to the Club. So, from which Spanish ship did the cannon originate? Ponce de Leon sailed into the waters of Pine Island Sound around Captiva in 1513; DeSoto came to the bay area in 1539 and began a conquest to conquer “La Florida”; Jose Gasparilla terrorized his way up and down the coast in the 18th century landing in Tampa and starting a parade; Diego “El Mulato” Martin plundered the Gulf Coast in the 1600s along with a few others. Pirates did roam the Gulf Coast, but more myths than facts preside. “History is a pack of lies about events that never happened told by people who weren’t there.” George Santayana 1863-1952 Submitted by: Trisha Birkenstock

DOWNTOWN Saturday, October 9th SAVE THE DATE!

W

hat is a Poker Run? A Poker Run is not a race. It’s a Club tradition and an assembly of some of the most social and active boaters in the SPYC. On Poker Run day, boaters meet at the Club docks and show off their well-curarated boat themes. Upon ariving at the Club they will check-in and receive a nautical map that will chart their path of adventure for the day. The map includes 5-8 different stops in which the boaters will travel to and collect a poker chip at each stop.

POKER RUN is BACK at the Downtown Club! Saturday - October 9th, 2021 If you are interested in hosting a dock stop or volunteering to help with a stop, please email: Alex Deininger at aboudreau103@gmail.com

The stops are a combination of gracious member’s waterfront homes and local waterside restaurants. All boats are tasked with visiting all the stops in the time allotted. Upon returning to the Club, each partcipant will turn in their tokens for poker cards and play a 5-Card Poker hand! Prizes are awarded for the Best Hand, Best “Boat Theme”, and Best “Dock Stop.” It is always fun to see what everyone comes up with! SMOOTH SAILING | JULY-AUGUST 2021

REACHERS

DD.Del Palmer & Joanne Simmons Broad Reachers sailing with Barchan Rodgers

by Marti Cochran

O

n April 27th, Joanne Simmons sailed in the one and only FWSA Interclub held in 2021. The races were hosted by the Dinghy Dames at Davis Island and she came in 2nd place!! The Broad Reachers are looking forward to a full FWSA schedule starting next fall. This year has been filled with many obstacles; replacement of the old dock with a wonderful new dock, cold weather, too much wind, or no wind. The Broad Reachers were finally able to spend the last several weeks of our sailing season actually on the water!! On the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, the Broads attempted to sail out Shell Key for our annual picnic lunch. The tides were against us!! After about an hour and half, and with very little forward motion, we made the decision to return to the Club and enjoy our picnic at the pool.

RIDERS

CLUB

by Bob Frazee (contact info (315) 420-7114 | rfrazee@cazequip.com)

O

n Friday, May 20th, five riders met up at our normal meeting spot, the Cracker Barrel at 54th Ave N. Our destination for lunch was a place called The Freezer in Homosassa, FL. We started off on I-275 N, as usual, for a northern ride to I-75 N. Just as we were finishing crossing the Howard Franklin Bridge, one of the riders developed a vibration in his rear tire; so we pulled over on the shoulder to investigate the trouble. It turned out his tire was damaged, apparently from some debris on the highway. Not wanting to continue with a damaged tire, he exited the highway and returned to St. Petersburg, and was able to get his tire replaced. Meanwhile, the rest of us continued our trip. We exited I-75 N onto SR 52 W to Bellany Brothers BLVD (CR 581). JULY-AUGUST 2021 | SMOOTH SAILING

SPYC July-Aug 2021 ISSUE MAIN.indd 24

Gina & Els Hotel Zamora

The next week was much more successful. The Broads sailed north under the Causeway Bridge and over to the Hotel Zamora for a wonderful lunch. The round trip took about four hours and everyone had a wonderful time. Our thanks to Katie Rodger’s son, Barchan for driving the Safety Boat with Mary McCarty on both occasions. Trish Pierce (Shell Key) and Kathy Ahern (Zamora trip) were our Safety Boat guests. Sailing both weekends were: Katie Rodgers, Gina Bowden-Pierce, Carol Hansen, Mary Moosbruger, Angela Treinen, Charl Hadfield. Valarie Nussbaum-Harris & Els Weimken joined is to Shell Key and Anna Olecka & Debbie Walcott sailed to Hotel Zamora. Bellany Brothers Blvd eventually turned into Culbreath Rd., which took us to Powell Rd. (CR 572 W); Powell Rd. W, to California Rd. N, to SR 50 W. After a short ride on SR 50 W we came to Fort Dade Ave. N, then a left put us on Citrus Way N (Cr 490 N). We then came to W. Grover Cleveland Blvd into Homosassa Springs. A left on W. Fishbowl Dr. (CR 490A) became Yulee Dr., which put us in Homosassa, then a right onto S. Boulevard Dr. and we arrive at The Freezer. This unique spot is located at a marina on the Homosassa River and is home to several commercial shrimp boats; so shrimp is their specialty, and it is very good. Our waitress told us that “if it can’t be boiled or steamed, they don’t serve it”. That makes the sides somewhat limited however, it is considered a “top 10 hole-in-the-wall” place for seafood in Florida. After lunch we opted for a quicker ride back to St. Petersburg, so we took S. Blvd Drive back>>Yulee Dr.>>US 98 S. >>SR 589 S. >>I-275 S.>> and then to St. Petersburg. During the summer months our rides are less frequent and participation falls off; as people head north to escape the hot and humid summer. We start to get more participation again in September & October. During the summer we do try to get a couple shorter rides in during the hotter months. As always, feel free to contact me for more information about the Riding Club.

or the past few months the Salty Sisters have enjoyed Captain Els Wiemken’s “Ahoy Salties” at our regular Wednesday meetings. It’s great being back together again!! Co-Captain Jennifer Parramore planned three great sailing days for the last part of our sailing season. On May 26th, Pram Queen Betty Proper implored Jennifer to get the Eleanor, Tricia, & Sandy Prams out. The Salties sailed with 11 Prams and four power boats performing various race tasks, in a variation of the esteemed, traditional Salty Sisters Mother Ducky race with four teams participating. The “Floaters” led by Mother Ducky Ellen Pavone, the “Daisy Ducks” led by Mother Ducky Joanne Simmons, the “Daffy Ducks” led by Mother Ducky Els Wiemken, and the “Odd Ducks” led by Mother Ducky Carol Hansen.

The following two weeks consisted of Pram and Ideal racing! The winds were light the first week, but four Pram sailors, 11 Ideal sailors and 10 Race Committee persevered and completed several races. Our last sailing week, June 9th , we had of four Ideals competing in two races before the winds died down. We ended that day in the pool at the Club with Jello Shots with lunch following in the Waterfront Room.

Captain Els announced that the Classic Boat Regatta is scheduled for September 11th this year. The Salty Sisters have had two Sonar teams in the past few regattas and she is encouraging us to add a third team this year.

e had a great 2020 – 2021 year despite the inconveniences and challenges created by the Covid virus. We maintained over 90% of our membership and learned how to offer satisfying hybrid Zoom/in-house program meetings. We are very optimistic about the coming year which began June 1st. The 2021 – 2022 officers and their assistants have been planning for the new program season. Our program committee has a fabulous line-up beginning with “Hemingway’s Women,” the ever-popular fashion show, “All Things Franklin” – little know tidbits about Ben, a creative hands-on project, a representative from the Seabird Sanctuary, a food demonstration, and bingo!! We are playing Mah Jongg all summer and lessons are available. If you want to play contact Sharon Mehok at sherronm@verizon.net and she’ll get you on the distribution list.

RV LAND CRUISERS by Angela Kowalik, President

t our last face-to-face meeting we talked about the myriad of apps, websites, and other technical tools used for our RV travelling.

Most notable were RV Trip Wizard and Harvest Hosts. RV Trip Wizard is both an app and website that helps in overall trip planning, giving you the ability to customize your route specific to your RV. You provide the specifics, such as your RV height, width, weight and so on and the software will take that into account when suggesting routes to avoid low clearances, steep grades, and other restrictions. Along the general route you can look for campsites using integrated campground reviews. While RV Trip Wizard can be used for navigation, most seem to use it for general route planning and utilize an RV specific GPS for actual navigation. Harvest Host, on the other hand, is a membership service that allows you to book unique and fun places to park your RV (free!) for a night and experience a working farm, winery, brewery, museum, or other unique and interesting locations. This network surely adds some fun and interest to the trip. More importantly, we have all come to realize how lucky we are to have an RV to travel in and what great experiences and adventures we’ve had and will have. Seems last year was thought to be the “year of the RV”, with so many people purchasing RV’s that sales were through the roof. However, this year might be even more extraordinary with all the RVers out on the road and the highest attendance records in the National Parks. Still, there’s no better way to travel. Who knows what you’ll see around the next bend?

ENJOY YOUR SUMMER TRAVELS!

pril showers did not deter the Cruising Fleet. We held our monthly luncheon and cruised the “Lee Island” and “Cultural” coasts of Florida during our 16-day Commodore’s Cruise. We also started June off with a cruiser’s luncheon and a “Daytripper’s” rally. Our Commodore’s Cruise kick-off luncheon, held on April 15th, was fortunate to have both Commodore (David Mendelblatt) and Vice Commodore (Bill Waters) providing presentations.

Pam & Gary Frank & Jackie

The Commodore gave a great overview of the small boat safety initiatives at the Sailing Center and the Vice Commodore updated us on the status of the proposed new SPYC Docks. There were an impressive 42 cruisers attending; that included four new members. The Commodore’s Cruise lasted from April 16th - May 1st, 2021. We had 23 boats participating, with two boats bringing four additional guests, for a total of 50 cruisers! We visited eleven ports: Sarasota YC & Bird Key YC (first stop & last stop), Twin Dolphins Marina, Venice YC & Crow’s Nest, South Seas Plantation, Pink Shell Resort, Legacy Resort, Isle YC, and Palm Harbour Marina. Each port was hosted by volunteer Port Directors (Camille Iurillo, Joe Petrella; Keith & Laura Gibson; Caryn & Willy Bain; Barbara & Heber Weller; Debbi & Mike Young; Pam & Garry Hass; Ben & Chris Roddey; Jaleen Hartney; Frank & Jackie Robinson) who did a fabulous job of arranging restaurants, tours, and sporting events. Not to mention the small gift bags given at each port to each cruiser.

The cruise was a smashing success with many nights out on the town, water sports, Croquette, Bochy Ball tournaments, tours of interesting places (museums, Ford’s & Edison’s homes, distilleries, art villages, farmers markets, beaches, shopping of course, and a special treat. Two of our cruisers (Deserie Valloreo & Jim Gilmour) are accomplished musicians and gave us a concert during one of our many docktail events. We even had “basket weaving” classes aboard one of our vessels.

It was truly a Cruise to remember. Not only for the friendships developed, adventures experienced, and pure fun had by all but that we were able to get that number of cruisers together, coordinate that many events, and have it come off without issue. That speaks well of our Cruisers professionalism and are dedicated Port Directors who made it all possible.

The Golf Group made up for lost time this month by playing at Waterlefe Golf Club over the “Big Bridge” to Bradenton. Then we went back to Clearwater for a Cove Cay outing as we enjoyed perfect weather and good times! It is a pleasure to announce that Joe Mansir has stepped up to assume our Golf Group Treasurer duties. Thank you to George Kinemond who has so efficiently served our group for quite a few years. We are saddened with heavy hearts to announce the passing of Tom Pierce, an active and dedicated golf member for many years. Our thoughts are especially with his wife, Gina.
