CHAPTER SIX
Happy Spring! It hardly seems possible that it’s already April. Winter has flown past, and we now have been and will continue to enjoy our beautiful weather. Come on out to the Club for some great outdoor dining and Tiki Bar fun. Pass-a-Grille pool and patio deck is open Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 11:00 am till 6:00 pm. Come by boat or car and relax with friends, a cold beverage, and something to eat off the grill.
Many members are still talking about the Town Hall meeting we held on February 25th. The ballroom was packed, and we discussed: Why Rebuild, Food and Beverage, and Dues and Capital Contributions. Many of you spoke and shared your thoughts. The Flag and many Board members were present and we heard you. Stay tuned for another meeting soon, as we can continue the discussion and planning and of course, communication. Check the calendar and e-News for Coffee with the Commodore.
Could we have had any better weather for the St. Pete Grand Prix? What a great turnout by the City and our members at the Garage Party and the VIP Party. And what a race! Speaking of racing, we see regatta season slowing down from the hundreds of young sailors who participated in the Valentine Regatta and hundreds more in the Helly Hanson Sailing World Regatta Series. March brought the Pennington Cup and the Winter Championship Lightning Regatta. The Lightning regatta brings many repeat sailors who come back each year, some with 2nd and 3rd generation sailors, because they love the job our Club and Race Team do in hosting the event.
March saw the roll out of new menus in each dining venue. This is something members have been asking to have for a long time. Great job to Chef Christian and the kitchen team for a refreshing change and diverse new items.
Management established our new “Kid’s Corner” with Sunday Story Time. It continues to gain popularity. You’ll find it located in the Regatta Room where an area has been created for family dining with a kid’s buffet and play area. We can’t ask Intermediates to join and not provide space for them to enjoy the Club with their children. BTW, it’s a great place for grandparents to bring their grandchildren.
We ended March with a blowout Street Party to celebrate the official re-opening of our new marina. We thank the Coast Guard for their participation and joining in the celebration. On March 29th, the Cruising Fleet hosted Vessel Safety Checks with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, which was open to all vessels. We ended March with our Annual Blessing of the Fleet on the 30th. This Blessing is a centuries old tradition by fishermen, sailors and yachtsman meant to ensure a safe season. And now on to April.
The St. Petersburg Motor Classic is set for April 6th and is always a great time. Bring your friends, as it’s a great way to introduce them to the Club. Comedy Night is set for April 12th, with a variety of comedians from St. Pete Stand-up performing and should be a lot of fun. Easter brings Bunny Brunch for families on Saturday, April 19th and a lavish Easter Brunch on Sunday, April 20th. Be sure to make a reservation. We have a Health & Wellness Fair on April 27th and families won’t want to miss the Spring Family Carnival on April 27th (reservations are required). Lots happening, so come on down to YOUR Club! Finally, construction continues at our beloved PAG Beach Club. Insulation has been installed as I write this column and drywall has been ordered. Look for more video updates from our GM as we work toward a re-opening in May.
Cordially,
Joe DiVito, Commodore

The Entertainment Committee and staff have been super busy creating different/exciting events since our last article. We rounded out February with SPYC’s first "5-Star Escoffier Dinner" on February 22nd. Auguste Escoffier was a famous French Chef who was credited for taking the French Cuisine to another level. It was a night that really captured the spirit of fine dining and elegance; we hope to continue offering similar high-caliber experiences in the future. A special thanks to Chef Christian, the entire SPYC service team, Alison Reeder and Tom Temeyer for a truly memorable event.
Make sure to mark your calendars and
don’t miss out on
upcoming
"Final Friday" performances!
"
In addition to the Escoffier Dinner, we are thrilled to have local musicians showcasing their talents in the Heritage Lounge on the final Friday of each month. It’s a great way to support the community and enjoy a fun, relaxing evening with friends and fellow members.
Looking ahead, we’re also working on a few more exciting events and activities to keep you entertained throughout the year. We encourage you to stay connected through the Club's weekly E-blasts, social media, and online Club calendar to keep up to date with all the happenings.
Thank You for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you at our next event!"

rom March 15th-19th; our Yacht Club welcomed the Lightning sailors back to town. This is SPYC’s longest running Regatta, the only year we have missed is 2020 due to the Covid epidemic. We had competitors from 14 states and 3 foreign countries; Australia, Chile and Colombia.
Racing was to begin on Sunday but the weather had other ideas. It was very windy when we headed out and we were seeing gusts up to 30kts before we got past the Pier. We came ashore and watched the forecasts for a bit and our Principal Race Officer, Todd Fedyszyn made the very wise decision to cancel the races for the day. Sunday night the sailors had a Welcome party at the Yacht Club with greetings by Vice Commodore Christian Bergstrom.
We knew the forecast for Monday was worse than for Sunday and races were unlikely. We got to the docks and the weathermen were correct. They were showing gusts in the middle of Tampa Bay up to 40kts. The sailors never even put the boats in the water.
Tuesday we were greeted to a sunny morning with promising breeze. We were able to start on time at 10:35 am with delightful clear skies and wind 1214 knots. The race was won by Geoff Becker from Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis, followed by Connor Godfrey from Buffalo Canoe Club in Ridgeway, Canada and David Starck also from Buffalo CC.
Race two started at 11:55 am with wind 8-9 knots. The race was won by Jody Starck from Buffalo CC followed by Ched Proctor from Cedar Point YC in Westport, Connecticut, and Tom Peterson from South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We tried to get a third race in but the wind dropped to zero before the start so we towed the boats back to dock.
Tuesday night the sailors attended their annual banquet which was attended by Commodore Joseph DiVito and his lovely wife Theresa. Commodore thanked the sailors for attending and handed out awards for the youngest sailor, Blake Stevens 16 years old, and a trophy for a member of the Lightning Class that has gone above and beyond for his efforts and dedication to the
Wednesday greeted us with very blue skies and very light air. We tried our hardest to give them a nice fair race to no avail. The wind dropped to 2kts for extended periods and we had a strong current working against them. It became apparent that we would have at least a third of the fleet be unable to finish the race before the time limit expired and we abandoned it. It’s a very hard decision to make but the feed back on shore from the racers was that it was a good call. Back at the Sailing Center we had the trophy presentation by Commodore DiVito under the welcome banners from Visit St. Petersburg Clearwater, our biggest sponsor of the Regatta.
CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS: Geoff Becker with crew Laura Jeffers and Will Murray in FIRST. Ched Proctor with crew Rafael Melendez and Meredith Killion in SECOND. Tom Peterson with crew Amy Simonsen and Mike Blackwood in THIRD. Jody Starck with crew Bill Faude and Ian Jones in FOURTH. Connor Godfrey with crew Kayleigh Godfrey and Jason McCaffery in FIFTH.
The Lightning Class runs a Masters Regatta at the same time which counts only the first two races of the day. The winners of FIRST through THIRD were the same for the Championship. A lot of the competitors are heading to Greece for the World Championship in June.
I would like to give a big THANK YOU to our Sailing Center staff that makes this look so seamless with their attention and preparation. We are very lucky to also have the best Race Committee personnel around. Thank you to Todd Fedyszyn as the PRO and Helle Getz with Alan Capellin who took over these duties when Todd had to leave. Rick Roy allowed us to use his lovely yacht as the signal boat and was on RC with Gina Bowden Pierce, Barbara Mahaffey, Trisha Birkenstock, Doug Wake, Karen Park, Jennifer Parramore, Peter Hood, Chuck Goes, George Pennington, John Simeone, Robert Hopkins, and Ian Lineberger.
In 1946, the first Lightning Class boats were purchased to promote the class at SPYC. Subsequently, in 1948, the first Winter Championship was held, which was the beginning of a long history of Lightning Midwinter regattas at SPYC This year the Club hosted the 77th! Their Class trophies and plaques can be found all over the Club – the Library, the Heritage Lounge, the Regatta Room as well as the three trophy models featured in the front Lobby window.
The Lightning Class is one of the largest single class fleets in the world with more than 100 active fleets worldwide. Since 1938, when the first Lightning was built by renowned Sparkman & Stevens, this class has had many generations of family sailors – pitting brother against brother, wife against husband, father and mother against daughter and son. Continuing to this day, skippers have their spouses, brother s , children, and even grandchildren crewing for them!
Although noted for their sailing skills, their entertainment skills surpassed all imagination. “More than a few participants from the North and Midwest readily admitted they came as much for the social activities as they did for the racing!”
The I.L.C.A has honored the following SPYC members for their contributions to this regatta : Wally Bishop , Ted Tolson , Bruce Watters, Jr ., Peter Wormwood. In 2007, the Lightning Class awarded the St. Petersburg YC Club Trophy for excellence in race management to the SPYC Event Team led by P/C Bob Birkenstock Event Chair and Tom Farquhar PRO. [A framed photo of the trophy presentation is located in the Regatta Room.]
Notable SPYC Lightning Sailors: Ed Baird became SPYC’s first and only Mid-Winter Lightning Champion in 1983; Colin Park & Karen Park won the Lightning North American Championships in 1988; Colin won the Lightning NA Masters in 2000, 2001 & 2003.
For the “rest of the story”– More info can be found in the on-line Centennial Book.

February was a very active cruising month for the Fleet, with two cruises to Clearwater Yacht Club and an Anchor Out weekend at Emerson Point Preserve. Many thanks to Port Directors Paul & Julie Murray and Barbara & Heber Weller for organizing dining and activities for the groups at Clearwater Yacht Club. And big thanks to Port Directors Art & Kim Hanson for planning a truly special weekend at Emerson Point. The Anchor Out cruise was a first for the Cruising Fleet. Ten boats anchored out, four of them rafted together. From the docktails onboard 'Knee Deep' and 'Boa Vida', to dinghy adventures, burgers and dogs on the beach, including a pancake & sausage breakfast hosted by Al Torres & Jennifer Kirk onboard 'Boa Vida', it was a beautiful weekend full of laughter, camaraderie, and new experiences for the group.
On February 28th, 20 Day Trippers enjoyed a beautiful ride and lunch at Circles in Apollo Beach. The March Day Trippers outing was at SkyBar & Grill at the SkyBeach Hotel & Marina.
At the March 6th luncheon our speakers were Kevin & Susan Cross with a presentation on cruising to the Bahamas; packed with valuable tips and information on preparing for the trip, provisioning, navigation, and great insights on where to go and what not to miss.
Also in March, the Cruising Fleet cruised to the Downtown Docks in two groups, with Vessel Safety Checks scheduled each weekend. The annual Blessing of the Fleet took place on Sunday, March 30th with more than 25 boats who received their blessing for a safe and bountiful cruising season.
April 3rd will be our kickoff dinner for our 2025 Commodore’s Cruise scheduled for April 26 – May 11. Commodore DiVito will carry on the tradition of addressing the Fleet at our kickoff dinner, providing an update on the Club, and wishing us well as 17 boats embark on our voyage to Key West, with some boats going on to the Bahamas.
April 26 - May 11: Two-week Commodore’s Cruise to the Keys
May 1: Cruising Fleet Luncheon, with a presentation on hurricane preparation
May 16-18: Cruise to Sarasota Yacht Club
June 20-22: Cruise to Twin Dolphin Marina

On February 13th, 30 Wing Shooters coalesced at Wayne Andrews’ home for our annual Wild Game Dinner. The hunting success of multiple members provided a bountiful feast of quail and pheasant. Sides were assigned to various members and included mac & cheese loaded with shrimp, collard greens, dirty rice, black eyed peas, corn casserole, corn bread, empanadas and cheese grits.
Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Grand Marshal Dave Miller at: dmillerd@mac.com
Outgoing Grand Marshal Frank Robinson managed the event with the assistance our new Grand Marshal Dave Miller. We all acknowledge Wayne carried the load getting his place ready, cooking the wild game to perfection, executing the role of a gracious host and cleaning up the mess after the last cigar was extinguished. There also may have even been an empty bottle or two chucked into the bushes.
A secondary acknowledgment goes to John Kollar who delivered his outstanding seafood mac & cheese before rushing off to see A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical. It must be mentioned our Wild Game Dinner was the day before Valentines Day. You are a smart man John.

Happy Spring to all our Woman’s Club members! We are excited to announce our speaker for our April 10th meeting. St. Pete/Clearwater Film Commissioner Lisa Dozois will be joining us to tell us about her job. How does she attract films to be produced here? We have had some great ones such as Cocoon, Lethal Weapon 3, Spring Breakers and the 2 Dolphin Tale movies filmed here.
There are also many smaller budget films that air on Lifetime and Hallmark that you recognize as filmed here. How do they obtain permits, crew and services? Well, Lisa will be happy to tell us! Mark Your Calendar!! PLUS...there will be a drawing for a $25 gift certificate. Hope you are the lucky winner!

Wehave an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled far and wide on motorcycles together. The Riders Club welcomes you to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride.
The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious. Like past years, in 2025 we will be taking multi-state rides and international trips on the "roads less traveled" over the summer months. Future trips are in the works.

Join us Saturday mornings for some fun sailing & racing! For information about becoming a Broad Reacher contact Carol Hansen: Carol@dband1.com
The FWSA Interclub Racing finally had it’s first start on Friday, February 21st, and was hosted by the Broad Reachers! The day had a very chilly start with temps in the 40’s and wind chill in the 30’s – brrrr!
As sailors crossed the Sunshine Skyway bridge, they were greeted with "high wind" advisory signs and white caps on the bay. The sun shining brightly was the saving grace of the day.
Eight brave sailors, including three rookies, dressed warmly and finished three races in 12-14 mph winds with higher gusts. Clubs sailing included the Broad Reachers, Luffing Lassies, Salty Sisters, Windlasses and one independent member. Sailing for the Broads was Juliette Clark, who placed 3rd overall for the day.
The PRO of the day, Captain Gloria Davis, had the mark boat set a windward/leeward course which the sailors did twice around. Gloria’s Race Committee consisted of Broad Reacher’s Carol Hansen, and Salty Sisters Selga Sakss & Beverly Smoak, and of course, we thank Paul Goodman our Safety Boat driver for his participation. The starts were interesting to watch from the dock since timing was critical because gusts pushed the sailors closer to the line than sometimes intended. Only one sailor was called over early while other sailors ducked the line or tacked before going over.
Despite the clubhouse still being under renovations, PAG Manager, Delora Croteau, provided a delicious lunch that was catered by SPYC. Luckily the lunch tables were protected from the north wind and the bright sun kept everyone toasty. All in all, it was a very successful day.

Congratulations to the Class of 2024!! Last month, the Salty Sisters welcomed Britt Madigan, Lindsay Carter, Jenny Roche, and Cathy Lasky as our new “Saltines” and celebrated with a Graduation Celebration cake.
Captain Beverly Smoak thanked all the Salty Sisters, nineteen in all, who worked for the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series from greeting & registration, Race Committee and sailing! The weekend was quite a success.
After several weeks of cold and windy weather, we finally completed the Maggie Mug trophy race. We had five Ideal 18s racing and were able to complete a total of five races for the series. Co-Captain Mik Severini thanked all the sailors and the race committee consisting of Helle Getz, Barbara Mehaffey, Katie Rodgers, PC Gloria Davis, Tricia Billings and Joan Stephenson. Winners of the Maggie Mug were: 3rd Place -Skipper Rosemary Sherman, Jenny Roche, Nona Pucciariello; 2nd Place -Skipper Pat Burrows, Audrey Orgo, Britt Madigan and 1st Place - Skipper Lori Leadbetter, Sue Davidson, Anna Streufert. This is the third win for Lori so she will retire from Maggie Mug racing. The only other person to have three Maggie Mug wins is PC Helen Larsen
FWSA 1st Delegate, Pat Burrows, announced that Mik Severini and KT Trudeau sailed for the Salty Sisters in the FWSA Interclub hosted by the Broad Reachers on Friday, February 21st, at Pass-a-Grille. It was a chilly and blustery day, but the girls had a great time!

he Ladies Beach Club had a fabulous March gathering, where we welcomed author Nancy W. Sindelar to introduce her latest book, Hemingway’s Passions. Nancy captivated us with her insights into Hemingway’s life and inspirations, and attendees had the opportunity to purchase a signed hardcover copy. To embrace the Parisian theme, members donned their favorite Frenchinspired attire and enjoyed a delightful lunch buffet with a touch of “ooo-lah-lah!” March also marked an important milestone as we voted on new Board members for the 20252026 term. We look forward to their leadership and the exciting year ahead. Be sure to attend the April program where the new Board will be officially installed. On April 22nd we will have a representative from the St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation to share all the free classes and health benefits provided at the first AARP Fitlot Fitness Park in the nation!
