CHAPTER FIVE

COMMODORE’S LOG

Dear fellow members...

It continues to be my honor to serve as your Commodore and I thank our General Manager, Bruce Furman, and his staff for all their support. I also thank all of you for your involvement with the Club. We have so many volunteers, including the Board Members, Committee Chairs & Committee Members; especially the best Race Committee in the world and all who support them. We are in the heart of Regatta season; what a joy for me to see so many groups working together to continue enhancing the Club’s reputation in the sailing world. Theresa and I have been to four international clubs and all of them knew the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.

February may have been a short month, but it was packed with activities. It was exciting to see hundreds of young sailors participating in the Valentine’s Regatta on February 8th & 9th. They competed with smiles on their faces and cheered for their competitors. That regatta was immediately followed by the start of the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series on February 14th - 16th.

SPYC was proud to once again serve as the kick-off race for the series. Dr. Jody Abrams and his entire team did a terrific job. (Again, the best Race Committee in the world!) During the month we also held the John Jennings Regatta and the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) Midwinters East. Many of these sailors return to compete each year and I hear many compliments about how welcome they feel by the members and our staff. In March, we’ll have the Pennington Cup, Winter Lightning Championship and the North Gulf Coast Challenge.

Our entertainment was also busy in February with a delightful Valentine’s Day Dinner in Grille 1909, the Escoffier Dinner, and our new “Kid’s Corner” with Sunday Story Time.

Once again, I hosted Coffee with the Commodore, continuing to learn from our members and taking that information to the GM, Flag and Board. I hope you see suggestions being put into action. These conversations also formed the basis for the Town Hall meeting that was held on February 25th.

We presented 3 major points:

1. A summary of the “why” we need a new building called for in the Master Plan and a presentation by BROC;

2. Food and Beverage is an amenity; and

3. Dues increases and why.

The meeting was primarily informational, and I think we had a good discussion. As you know, my goal this year is to improve communication from leadership to the members and that was the main goal of the meeting. As the Board works to make final decisions on the issues discussed, your comments and suggestions will be very helpful to the process. I thank all who participated. We still have much work to do, and continuing to have good communication will be the key to finding the best solutions to the challenges we face.

This Month: March 2nd we will hold the 20th Annual Grand Prix Garage Party; Sunday, March 16th will be our St. Patrick’s Day celebration (a day before as the Club is closed on Mondays). Be sure to mark your calendar for March 28th for the Key West Street Party & Grand Re-opening of our Marina; March 30th is or Annual Blessing of the Fleet and then a delightful Jazz Brunch. I hope to see you around the Club.

Cordially,

2 025 SAILING WORLD REGATTA SERIES

The 2025 Sailing World Regatta Series in St. Petersburg delivered incredible racing, perfect weather, and unforgettable moments on the water. Sailors were treated to blue skies, warm sunshine, and steady breezes, making for spectacular conditions throughout the event.

However, what truly set this weekend apart was the resilience and dedication of our amazing Race Committee team. When the scoring program unexpectedly failed, they pivoted immediately and took on the massive task of scoring the entire regatta by hand—a testament to their expertise, adaptability, and commitment to making this event a success.

From start to finish, the regatta showcased top-tier competition, sportsmanship, and the incredible camaraderie that makes the Sailing World Regatta Series so special.

A huge thank you to our Race Committee, volunteers, competitors, and supporters for making this an event to remember. We look forward to seeing everyone back on the water again soon!

RECAP OF THE 2025 VALENTINE'S DAY REGATTA

The 2025 Valentine’s Day Regatta was a resounding success, thanks to the incredible efforts of our sailors, volunteers, and especially the members of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club who stepped up both on and off the water to support the event.

Saturday morning began with a short postponement as sailors and race officials waited for the breeze to settle. Once conditions improved, both Gold and Silver Fleets hit the water for two action-packed races. Sunday’s light winds prevented additional racing. Despite the shortened schedule, the competition was fierce, and SPYC sailors delivered outstanding performances.

Congratulations to our SPYC Junior Racing Team for their amazing performances:

1st place- Thomas Weidner; 4th place- William Weidner; 5th place- Constantino Conrad; 7th place- Dalton Cellamare; 13th place- Tucker Gowens; 14th place- Ethan Cox. Congratulations to Clara Reali, Weston Bowie, Dylan Thomley, Vivienne Barrios, Bennett Lamb, Nico Sansone and Kaitlin Thomley who also raced in Gold Fleet. Silver Fleet was also well represented by Ronan Madigan, Bailey Bridge, Sawyer Lamb, and Theo Hensen

This year’s Valentine’s Day Regatta once again showcased why SPYC is a premier destination for youth sailing. The competition, camaraderie, and community support made the event a tremendous success. We extend our appreciation to everyone who made this weekend possible—from the race committee to the volunteers, the SPYC members, and the families who support these young sailors. Your dedication is what makes this Club so special.

SPYC Competitors included: Joey Springer, “Teddy” Irwin, Royce Rarick, David & Mark Mendelblatt, David Fagen, Philip Jackubiak, Rod Johnson, Mike & Kevin Funsch, Rob Olmsted, Paul Kullman, Frank McCarthy and Per Lovfald.

We would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Mauricio Pablopulos , who won the title of Employee of the Month for February 2025!

Mauricio is part of the banquet team, assisting with all events that take place throughout the Club and occasionally helping out in other areas, wherever the need may be. He has been a member of the Yacht Club staff most recently since May 2024, but has worked here off and on since 2003; as he was juggling life between the U.S. and his native homeland. Mauricio hails from Santiago, Chile where his family still resides, but lives here with his father and son.

Although Mauricio is in the Banquet Department, he exemplifies teamwork, helping whoever may need a hand. His easy-going attitude makes him a pleasure to work with and I can’t think of anyone more deserving at this time. Congratulations, Mauricio, keep up the phenomenal job!!!

What is a Poker Run? A Poker Run is not a race. It's a Club tradition and an assembly of some of the most social and active boaters in the SPYC.

On Poker Run day, boaters meet at the Club docks and show off their well-curated boat themes. Upon arriving at the Club they will check-in and receive a nautical map that will chart their path of adventure for the day. The map includes 5-8 different stops in which the boaters will travel to and collect a poker chip at each stop.

The stops are a combination of gracious member's waterfront homes and local waterside restaurants. All boats are tasked with visiting all the stops in the time allotted. Upon returning to the Club, each participant will turn in their tokens for poker cards and play a 5-Card Poker hand! Prizes are awarded for the Best Hand, Best Boat Theme, and Best Dock Stop. It is always fun to see what everyone comes up with!

Our January cruise to the Tampa Convention Center and a Tampa Bay Lightning game was a big hit again this year. Thirty Cruisers gathered for dinner at Harpoon Harry’s and then cheered the Bolts on to a thrilling victory in overtime and a shootout! Twenty-six members (13 boats) docked at the Tampa Convention Center and enjoyed a beautiful weekend together on Tampa Bay.

The Day Trippers were excited to have a perfect day on the water in January, with 26 cruisers gathering for lunch at Island Grille in Tierra Verde. We were all so happy to have sunshine, warm weather and smooth seas after the frigid week of Florida winter!

We had a great turnout for our February 1st dinner. Our speaker was Krista Park, Coordinator of Training & Operations for the Eckerd College Search & Rescue program, with an interesting and engaging presentation on Eckerd S&R operations. The only program of its kind in the country, its student members work 24 hours on, 48 hours off conducting every aspect of rescue operations throughout the Tampa Bay area. At the meeting we welcomed new members and reviewed plans for our busy upcoming cruising schedule –February cruises to Clearwater Yacht Club in two groups plus an Anchor Out weekend at Emerson Point Preserve, and in March two weekend cruise-ins to our downtown docks. We also reviewed plans for our two-week Commodore’s Cruise to the Keys in late April. Paul and Gini Berry had samples of our 2025 Commodore’s Cruise shirts on hand and are taking orders until midMarch.

UPCOMING FLEET EVENTS

Our annual Vessel Safety Checks by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will take place on March 29th at our downtown docks, and our Annual Blessing of the Fleet is scheduled for March 30th at 11:00 am in the basin by the St. Pete pier. Both events are open to all SPYC members, look for the sign-up form in SPYC Weekly E-News.

Wing Shooter Fred Bickley is a long time member of our Yacht Club. You will find his portrait as Commodore on the north wall of the Compass Room and a picture of his boat, Mango Latitudes, hanging in the bar. Fred is a two-time winner of the Regata Del Sol al Sol. Natural leaders are often formed early in life. This is Fred’s story.

A young Fred was introduced to sailing in Charlie Morgan’s sail loft. He was a frequent visitor to the loft which was across the street from his father’s welding business. Sailing and a friendly personality were big factors in Fred’s successful life. Here’s just a few examples where Fred’s personality, leadership and sense for opportunity shaped his life.

• At St. Petersburg High, Fred was selected as the most friendly classmate and student council treasurer 3 consecutive years.

• He convinced a tall girl to be his date for the senior prom. They had the same problem, height. She was 6'2".

• In 1962 Fred was in the first Freshman class at Eckerd College (Florida Presbyterian College at that time). In 1966 he graduated with a Psychology BA. He missed earning a double degree (Biology) by one point.

• While at Eckerd, Fred was actively racing on many of the sailboats at the Yacht Club. The Southern Ocean Racing Conference was getting hot and the world’s fastest boats and best sailors and were coming to St. Petersburg. Fred was hanging with the top tier of the sailing world.

• To pay for college he worked the 6:00 pm to midnight shift driving a wrecker. He remembers discretely rescuing a few SPYC members. Back then the club was a wild place, and some of the people stuck in the sand at North Beach should not have been there, at that hour, together.

• It was late Spring in 1966 that things took a haywire course. His last final exam (Biology) was on the same day Fred needed to be in Bermuda for the start of a trans-Atlantic race with Charlie Morgan, on the Charlie’s 60' design, Maredea. His Biology Professor refused to let Fred take the exam early. Fred orchestrated a little heavy back door pressure, to the displeasure of the Professor, for an exception. Fred would take the exam when he returned from Europe.

• After the race Fred hitch hiked around Europe for five weeks on a shoe string budget. He claims to have learned more in those five weeks than he had the in his four years at Eckerd.

• When he got back home he sat for his Biology final. He needed a 90% to pass the course. The miffed Professor gave Fred an 89% and flunked him.

• In December of 1966 Fred’s plan to begin graduate school at North Carolina State was disrupted by a draft notice. There were no graduate student deferments at that time. To stay out of the Army, he enlisted in the Air Force.

• In 1970, while still in the Air Force, Charlie called. He wanted Fred on his boat Heritage to compete in the US America’s Cup Defender selection races. Fred was granted a five month leave by the Air Force to participate in an international sport competition, a sailboat race. Heritage lost out to Intrepid which successfully defended the Cup.

• Fred left the Air Force in 1971 and entered the real estate and contracting business in St. Petersburg. He joined SPYC as a Junior Member in 1959.

The Wing Shooters Society is loaded with members whose stories are as interesting as Fred’s. If you’d like to join contact: Dave Miller at dmillerd@mac.com

Join us Saturday mornings for some fun sailing & racing! For information about becoming a Broad Reacher contact Carol Hansen: Carol@dband1.com

The Broads finally were able to sail in Mid-January on a lovely Saturday morning when the weather just about perfect, a little cool, but tolerable. Captain Gloria Davis and Audrey Orgo, serving as Race Committee, along with Paul Goodman, our Safety Boat driver (using his own dinghy) set a great course for the first race. The five sailors that day were Katie Rodgers, Charl Hadfield, Dana Kollman, Juliette Clarke, and Carol Hansen

The first race went off without a hitch, but the second race had a complete overhaul when the current started running faster than the wind was blowing. All in all, it was a great day on the water!! Thanks to Delora and her staff, we enjoyed a great lunch sitting by the pool. Katie Rodgers and Carol Hansen ventured to Davis Island on January 28th to sail in an FWSA Interclub hosted by the Dinghy Dames, but typical of the past month, there was no wind!! January 15th was the FWSA General Meeting at the Island Way Grill in Clearwater hosted by the Dunedin Windlass. Several Broad Reachers attended the meeting and enjoyed the program learning about the sailability of greater Tampa Bay, providing affordable and accessibly activities for children and adults of all abilities.

January has been a busy month for the Salty Sisters, although none of the activities included sailing. The weather was either too cold, too windy, or there was no wind at all.

Some of the activities of the month included, learning how to fly a Spinnaker on Ideals, taught by PC Dee Gill and Suzanne Boohar who later, along with Pat Burrows taught us about the new sailing rules and sailing in light air. On January 15th, the Salties attended the FWSA General Meeting and lunch at the Island Way Grill in Clearwater, hosted by the Windlasses. We also enjoyed an impromptu lunch at St. Pete Cellars with our Past Captain, Valerie Massengill. The highlight of the month was visiting a glass blowing studio organized by Taryn Bergstrom, our “Land Cruise Director.”

The Salty Sisters had a great time at Zen Glass Studio and Gallery. Salty’s were able to experience the hands-on creative aspect, the intense heat of the molten glass, and the unique process of shaping with breath.

Thanks to our instructors, Joshua and Austin, we could see our creation come to life. It gave us all the satisfaction of creating a beautiful piece from scratch, and the sense of accomplishment from mastering a challenging skill. We made wine glasses, an octopus, jewelry, marbles, stress disks, and many more creative items. Several Salties have been back since to create cups, flower decorations, and stemless wine glasses.

Membership in the Salty Sisters is open to women members of SPYC who have sailing experience and eager to participate in sailing, race committee and other exciting water related activities.

In February, Pilar Moyano, gave us a Flamenco dancing history lesson and demonstration. What a fun day! This month on the 13th Nancy Sindelar will intrigue us with Hemingway in Paris

You don’t want to miss this; Nancy is a gifted speaker and knows all things Hemingway. We’ll also be voting on the 2025-2026 Board. Come and meet the candidates and cast your vote.

The Ladies Beach Club hosted our 13th Annual Mah Jongg Tournament in February, and everyone had a great time! Proctored by Claudia, to validate scores, the top scorers were Beverly Burchard, Angela Treinen, Sharon Simms, Eileen Kollar, Helle Getz, Suzie Schmitz, Mary Moccia, Roni Flynn and Sue Cooper. LBC ladies play Mah Jongg every week with a beginners table. Additionally, we continue to meet downtown but hope to be back at the Beach Club in May!

Adventures happen with the RV Group! To join in the fun and keep up with exciting RV events, please contact Rick & Sarah Moseley: RVlandcruisers@icloud.com

The RV Land Cruisers Club, with several rigs attending, had a great outing at the end of January. Although it was cold, we had a good time sitting by the campfire in the evening. We enjoyed the beautiful equestrian center at Grand Oaks RV Park

The horses were beautiful, and it was fun to watch the carriages. While we were up camping close to Apalachicola , we make sure to eat delicious fresh shrimp. But perhaps the highlight of the multi stop trip was seeing the manatees gathered at the Three Sisters Park . We look forward to future get-together‘s and invite all SPYC members with any type of RV to come join us.

One of the highlights for RV owners is the biggest RV rally in the country in Perry, Georgia scheduled for March 12th -15th. It's sponsored by Family RVing , which used to be called FMCA (Family Motorcoach Association). Due to travel plans there will not be an RV Land Cruisers meeting at the Club in March.
