I often use a phrase I picked up from an alum of St. Philip’s, Erykah Wright—now known as Erykah Badu. During the crisis of Hurricane Katrina, she responded here in Dallas to bring uplifting relief, recreational release, and reassurance to children housed in cramped shelters. Erykah gained access to the historic Forest Theater that had been shut down for over a decade. She partnered with St. Philip’s School & Community Center and local artists to have children from shelters bused in to experience the arts, recreation enrichment, and inspirational uplift amidst traumatic times.

During that period of ministry and inspiration, I heard Erykah use a refreshing phrase that resonates with my spirit. She told the children about her life, her various struggles and perseverance over “many summers.” I have consistently used this phrase to describe my time of service with St. Philip’s.

Perhaps, “many summers” resonates with me because I was born and raised in Chicago, went to undergrad in Iowa, and attended graduate school in New York. "Many summers” causes me to reflect not

Do What Works

on harsh winters but on the beautiful summers that always arrived after stormy seasons.

My long-standing service with the ministry of St. Philip’s has been one of “many summers.” The victorious accomplishments outshine the sacrifices, setbacks, and struggles. The success of our alumni is undeniable. God has smiled upon our recent faith leap to expand the school to 7th and 8th grade.

Our trek through the pandemic under the steady guide of the world’s ‘dopest’ and most extraordinary principal, Kellee Murrell, has blessed us with increased enrollment and a dynamic pool of gifted faculty and talented staff.

The surrounding neighborhood has experienced decades of tumultuous abuse and neglect. Yet amongst it all, summers have prevailed. In fact, by next summer, we will yield visible evidence by breaking ground on our Moody Performing and Fine Arts Pavilion; making headway in the vital expansion of Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry; engaging in new housing development near our campus; and pursuing the development of a true athletic complex

“My long-standing service with the ministry of St. Philip’s has been one of “many summers.” The victorious outcomes outshine the sacrifices, setbacks, and struggles.”

and community park, made possible by generous partners including The Dallas Stars Foundation and Carolyn and David Miller. Eclipsing all of these, will be our addition of 8th grade for the 2023 – 2024 school year.

As I am blessed with more summers, I am certain I will receive queries about how, why, and what allowed me to minister with St Philip's for nearly four decades. I will refer not only to Erykah Badu’s “many summers” phrase but I will also reference another champion of education, Tom Luce, author of Do What Works: How Proven Practices Can Improve American Schools. Tom Luce, founder and chairman of Texas 2036, and his wife, Pam, a former chair of St. Philip’s Board, continuously encourage others to invest their time, talent, and treasures into endeavors that work.

When I am asked about my “many summers” and Why I Do What I Do (WIDWID), the answer is…because it works. St Philip’s School and Community Center is undeniably impactful, AND we have continued alumni success, along with neighborhood renewal underway to prove it. In the recent completion of our strategic

plan (thanks to trustees, John Kiser and Kathy Hubbard), we have the ten-year target of becoming “ the ultimate model for successful school-based community transformation.” In just a few more sublime summers, we will achieve our goals by “doing what works”. My heartfelt thanks to our parents, faculty, staff, and our legion of friends and volunteers for your compassionate and strategic investments and sacrifices.

Blessings,

LIVING, WORKING & THRIVING BETTER, TOGETHER

This school year, we emerged from the pandemic as a united community with a common vision to transform the world through faith, education, and service. Our “ Better Together ” theme continues to shine a light on what makes our school such a unique place. We acknowledge that the success of our students and community is contingent upon our willingness to work, serve and live Better Together. This year is like others in that St. Philip’s continues to exhibit a spirit of collaboration, partnership, love, and support, but the theme of “Better Together” has cemented the notion that we are unbreakable and indestructible when we are selfless and live out a spirit of togetherness.

Our enrollment exceeded our expectations this year, and our students continue to thrive academically. When you step onto the campus, the air of excitement is palpable. Our newly added 7th graders walk the hall as leaders, risk-takers, and change agents. The growth of our middle school program includes new course offerings such as Latin, Mobile Game Design, Sculpting, Pre-AP, Entrepreneurship, Bible Class, and an athletics program. There is a newly renovated portable and a Middle School Lounge to accommodate our middle school expansion. Our new Middle School Director, Dr. Shaunaisea Henderson, brings her wealth of knowledge and expertise as a former school principal and her love for middle school students. The “middle” years can be challenging for young people, but our newly added counselor and additional resources are available to

nurture and support our students. The uniqueness of our program is that we maintain an intimate class size but offer many STEAM-related opportunities outside of the classroom.

Better Together also resonates with our Instructional Leadership Team. The development of this team of exceptional educators was designed to better serve our students, parents, and faculty. Each of our leaders is a proven educator and began as a classroom teacher. Their passion for teaching and learning makes them impactful and a valued resource for our families. Our concentration is not only on our students’ academic success but social and emotional wellness. The instructional leadership team and our teachers recognize the need to reduce student stress and increase resilience, while developing great character. We are Better Together when we care about humanity and teach our students that they are strengthened and empowered when united.

Living, working, and thriving together is a common theme in the Bible. Just as a body is a sum of its parts, so too is a ministry. The overwhelming success of St. Philip’s School and Community Center is because of its partnership and collaborative service to the community, students, staff, and donors. It is the collected belief of all involved that St. Philip’s embraces everyone’s potential to be extraordinary.

Sincere Regards,

Christian Education

THE POWER OF COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP AT ST. PHILIP’S

A few years ago, St. Philip’s established a dynamic Instructional Leadership Team consisting of veteran and key faculty members tasked with accelerating school change by improving teaching and learning through increased collaboration. They’ve successfully established a culture and systematic way of practicing “distributed leadership,” where decision-making spreads from one person to a group, particularly as it relates to addressing school-wide instructional quality. These esteemed leaders are continuous learners, collaborative, knowledgeable of content, pedagogy, assessment and data. They are invested in the school’s vision and have a growth mindset.

Following are messages from three members of St. Philip’s Instructional Leadership Team – Telissha Wesson, Jacquelyn Andrews, and Dr. Shaunaisea Henderson – with updates and highlights on our school divisions.

SHAPING OUR YOUNGEST MINDS AND HEARTS

There’s no place like home! As the Hunt Family Early Childhood Director, year twenty-nine as an employee, and thirty-three years as a part of the St. Philip’s family, i am honored to share a snippet of where education begins –Early Childhood (EC).

In the beginning, God created… the Early Childhood department at St. Philip’s, and there was light! Our students immediately begin learning the CREED, particularly ‘the sky is the limit, if they just put their minds in it.’ Our youngest scholars are planted in the soil of an aligned curriculum, the inclusion of daily Chapel service, and in the provision of specialized classes in Art, I-Lab, Music, P.E., and Spanish. EC is the foundation of the school, representing approximately fifty percent of the student population.

March of 2020 brought about a major change in education with the onset of the world pandemic. St. Philip’s dove in and successfully pivoted to virtual learning. During this time, our PK2 through Kindergarten students and their parents were patient and phenomenal! Our biggest challenge has been the return to in-person learning with two- to five-year-old children who have been isolated from human contact and interaction.

This experience reminded us of the importance of integrating Social & Emotional Learning into the forefront of St. Philip’s curriculum, as it is a vital part of education and human development. Through this process, our students develop into independent learners while remaining true to themselves and their individual, majestic personalities. This makes way for robust academic success produced the “St. Philip’s way.”

We look forward to keeping St. Philip’s educational foundation solid with quality, degreed, experienced educators and amazing students and families tailored for our school where we embrace every student’s potential to be extraordinary.

OUT OF THE BOX LEARNING ABOUNDS IN LOWER AND MIDDLE SCHOOL PREP DIVISIONS

Better Together! I am blessed to lead the Lower School and Middle School Prep divisions, which work together to prepare our students for a bright future. Since the first day of the school year, these students have been provided the opportunity to participate in a variety of learning experiences and activities to enhance their education.

In October, all students participated in Storybook Character Day, coordinated by our librarian, Ms. Booker, in which they read a fictional book and dressed as one of the characters. Lower School students decorated a pumpkin to portray their character and Middle School Prep students presented story elements on a project board related to their book.

In November, the 5th graders enjoyed an engaging lesson in which their math teacher, Mr. Francois, turned the classroom into a Mexican restaurant with festive music, decorations, snacks, and a menu. The students used the prices on their menus to solve math problems.

Most recently, Middle School Prep students were hosted by Judge Mark Murrell in the Dallas Municipal Court where they learned about the roles, responsibilities, and opportunities of the court system. This was a great way for Mrs. Givens, the social studies teacher, to make social studies a “real world” experience.

Creative teaching, engaging experiences, and enthusiastic learners are the expectation and the norm. I am blessed to work with these amazing educators and students. “Together,” we provide great learning opportunities.

THE EXPANDED MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM TAKES FLIGHT

What a sensational first semester our 6th grade and first class of 7th grade middle school students are having! We are so grateful as this is usually everyone’s favorite time of the year. It is a time when we are encouraged to reflect on what we are thankful for in our lives. The middle school students and teachers are excited for all that has taken place thus far and looking forward to what is to come.

Our scholars have participated in several service-learning projects including cleaning up the community, volunteering at Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry and the Annual Community Thanksgiving Feast. The students are now adjusted to the middle school daily regimen, and we believe they feel so much better than they did the first day of school. I believe what they are learning in middle school will be profound for their future. I am thankful for the support and understanding of the great educators who teach the students each day. It is a privilege to work with such a great team.

We are thankful for the support and understanding the parents and community show to the middle school and look forward to a dynamic second semester!

LEGACY PLAYGROUND RECEIVES AN UPGRADE THANKS TO ST. PHILIP’S DADS AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS

At St. Philip’s School and Community Center, we believe volunteers are the hands and feet of God. Through their willing hands and hearts, we’re able to engage in community transformation. Several members of our Dad’s Club and approximately 100 volunteers from Ernst & Young (EY) and Toyota banded together to give our Legacy playground, designated for our 1st through 7th grade students, a much-needed upgrade. Their work not only benefited our school grounds but also provided an example of service-leadership in action for our students.

Much appreciation is also extended to Action Metals, City of Dallas, Home Depot, and Claire Gogel and family for donating supplies and inkind services to ensure this project was successful.

INNOVATION LAB RECEIVES A BIG MAKEOVER WITH ASSISTANCE FROM THREE COMMUNITY PARTNERS

St. Philip’s I-Lab, recently renamed The TI Innovation Lab, is a unique maker’s space for students to create, solve problems and think critically. Thanks to our friends at Texas Instruments (TI) and Highland Park United Methodist Church, we’ve renovated the lab with fresh paint and new furniture. We’ve also equipped the space with new Lego robotics kits, TI-84 calculators, TI Rover Robots and more! Graduate students at SMU designed the floorplan and layout of the space for functionality, accessibility and to encourage the flow of creativity.

The I-Lab, which now features an inspiring mural created by TI’s design team, enhances academics at St. Philip’s by exposing students to 21st century S.T.E.A.M. activities. This provides a window into the future and a glimpse of potential careers students may choose to pursue. Using the Engineering Design Process, our students explore, build and tinker with kits and technology on a regular basis. They receive challenges and specific criteria as a guide, then are free to use their imagination. The renovated TI Innovation Lab serves as the classroom for Tia Stevens, the school’s Director of Innovation and Master Science Teacher, and is one of the many elements that allows St. Philip’s to be progressive and provide an unparalleled education to all of its students

ST. PHILIP’S TO EXPAND AUNT BETTE’S COMMUNITY PANTRY Community Impact

Over the past six years, Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry has bloomed into St. Philip’s School and Community Center’s largest and most vital social service program. Our comprehensive, collaborative, and strategic approach to “dignified” hunger relief has become a model for food pantries in other areas across the metroplex. In fact, Aunt Bette’s was one of a few area pantries that remained operational during the pandemic; pivoting to a “drive thru”, low touch model to reduce the spread of Covid and ensure client and volunteer safety. Over the last two years, the pantry increased its impact to serving 850+ households and distributing over 800,000 pounds of food to St. Philip’s most vulnerable neighbors.

This past June, Aunt Bette's officially resumed the client choice grocery shopping model, as St. Philip’s prepares to expand the pantry’s footprint, scope, and reach over the next twelve months by relocating it to a larger building located across the street. Fundraising efforts for this $1 million+ project began last year. So far, The Addy Foundation, Clements Foundation, and The Theodore & Beulah Beasley Foundation have enthusiastically joined St. Philip’s in this important work that will allow for increased efficiency, volunteer and community engagement, and expanded services.

Aunt Bette’s is an integral part of creating holistic change in the community and families in South Dallas, of which more than 200,000 citizens suffer from the effects of food inequity and insecurity. The new pantry building will undergo renovation in early 2023 and will offer a 50 percent increase in interior space for facilities and triple the pantry’s current parking availability. In addition to expanded facilities, Aunt Bette’s will be positioned to provide more wraparound services and nutrition classes in collaboration with several community partners.

Ultimately, through this project, St. Philip’s will be yet one step closer toward eradicating hunger in our neighborhood and ensuring South Dallas blooms into a thriving, healthy community.

AUNT BETTE’S CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

Aunt Bette’s is a big help for me in this time of my life. If it wasn’t for Bette’s pantry, I don’t know what I’d do. I love the people there. They are so nice. Whatever you need, they will help you any way they can, and I thank them for helping me with food. Cost of food is so high. I’m glad to have the pantry here to help me. God bless St. Philip’s.

I catch the bus to keep pantry appointments and I am so THANKFUL for the pantry assisting me with food AND a wagon for my groceries. With the price of food rising, it’s very difficult to keep food on my table.

I had nowhere to turn to when I lost my job due to the pandemic. I’ve never needed help for anything. I live in this neighborhood and always appreciated St. Philip’s but I never thought I would personally need one of its services.

SUMMER PROGRAM ADOPTS

CHILDREN’S DEFENSE FUND

FREEDOM SCHOOL MODEL

This past summer, St. Philip’s became the only organization in Dallas/Fort Worth to serve as site for the celebrated Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School model. Established nearly thirty years ago, Freedom Schools empower youth to excel and believe in their ability to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, country and world with hope, education, and action. This ethos aligns perfectly with St. Philip’s noble mission!

Freedom Schools are currently based in 30 states and more than 100 cities across the country. In Dallas, over 150 summer scholars were emboldened by St. Philip’s six-week program that focused on literacy and creative arts, in addition to the research-based and multicultural curriculum model that is a hallmark of CDF’s Freedom Schools. St. Philip’s provided full-ride scholarships to 42 summer scholars who live in our immediate neighborhood service areas.

With an active focus on developing a love of reading and to prevent summer learning loss, we were able to track and measure the kindergarten through 7th grade participants’ progress. Several students displayed an increased level of understanding and interest in what they were reading by the summer’s end.

Each day of Freedom School started with Harambee, a gathering of community. “Harambee” gave our students a fresh start with cheers and chants, a motivational song, an inspirational book read-aloud by a guest, and a moment of silence. This afforded all students a daily reminder that they are strong, loved and empowered to lead! As we know, learning happens best in an environment where students feel safe, supported and inspired.

We are thankful for the individuals and organizations who partnered with us in serving our scholars and their families, and for every parent who entrusted us with their children throughout the summer. We look forward to becoming a standout Freedom School in the region for many summers to come.

SENIOR SERVICES ARE BACK IN ACTION!

Our return to senior services is in full swing! Out of an abundance of caution, throughout the pandemic, our cherished senior community was unable to gather or participate in their usual activities. We are so grateful to be able to come back and be better together. With the help of our partners at Top Ladies of Distinction, Top Teens of America and St. Philip’s Parent School Association, we resumed the Annual Senior Soirée in October. It was a joyous occasion of dancing, laughter and fellowship with entertainment provided by Soul Inspirational Line Dance Company. Attendees shared: “It was perfect! Thank you for remembering seniors. Great event!” and “New friends, food, and fun. It was a fantastic event!”

We’ve also renewed transportation services for seniors in the community. Twice a month, a group of seniors is shuttled to and from the grocery store and miscellaneous shops to purchase goods and run errands. The outing lasts about two hours, and gives seniors the opportunity for fellowship and for taking care of basic needs. This program is another meaningful way St. Philip’s continues to serve its neighbors.

GIVING THANKS THROUGH IT ALL

The Annual Thanksgiving Feast was a great success! Over 120 attendees had the opportunity to socialize over a delicious meal. The feeling of gratitude filled the room as prayers of thanks were uplifted.

Volunteers from Girl Scouts of America, Jesuit College Preparatory School, The Dallas Stars, and Thirty-Four Commercial joined hands in service to our community as hosts, platers, greeters, and servers. We also had members of St. Philip’s Parent School Association, faculty and staff contribute to the festivities at the feast. We were especially excited to have our Middle School students volunteer for this annual community event. Our 6th and 7th graders have shared service-learning experiences monthly. We extend a huge thank you to all who participated, served, and donated in this season of giving and gratitude.

The feeling of gratitude filled the room as prayers of thanks were uplifted.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS STORE BECOMES A LEGACY PROJECT FOR JUNIOR LEAGUE OF DALLAS

For two decades, St. Philip’s School and Community Center has hosted its Annual Christmas Store which offers a dignified “shopping” experience to participants, much like our food pantry. The Junior League of Dallas (JLD) has partnered with St. Philip’s in planning, implementing, and leading the volunteer effort for this heartwarming program for the past several years. We were ecstatic to learn of the program becoming an official “legacy project” of the JLD which will ensure the Christmas Store will be a constant resource for our community. This is a win-winwin for those we serve, the JLD, and St. Philip’s!

Christmas Store families are afforded an opportunity to make holiday gift selections from a myriad of brand-new toys, electronics, clothing, and household items that are graciously donated by individuals, corporate and faithbased partners. The Store is staffed by generous volunteers from the Junior League, Santa’s Helpers, and St. Philip’s staff, faculty, and trustees. This year, we received applications for approximately 167 families, accounting for 500 children whose Christmas wishes came true!

AT ST. PHILIP’S, MIDDLE SCHOOL RULES!

Year one of St. Philip’s highly anticipated launch of a full middle school program is underway. Our inaugural class of 7th graders are standing out not only by their khaki uniforms and red shirts, but through budding leadership and an undeniable sense of dignity and gratitude. “They are proud to be in 7th grade and are looking forward to being the first graduating class of St. Philip’s,” says Dr. Shaunaisea Henderson, the new Middle School Director. “They want to learn. In fact, their desire to learn is remarkable.”

St. Philip’s middle school program currently boasts 6th grade and 7th grade, with preparation to add 8th grade next school year, thus establishing St. Philip’s as the only predominately African American faith-based, ISAS (Independent School Association of the Southwest) accredited Pre-K through 8th grade school in Dallas and the region.

Most agree that the middle school years can be the most transformative for students, as they experience tremendous social/emotional, physical, and educational changes during this time. Middle school marks crucial years in both their educational and human development; all in preparation for high school and for leading successful, productive lives. For four decades, St. Philip’s School has proven itself to be a solid foundation for the educational, spiritual, cultural, and emotional development of younger students. With the implementation of a

full middle school program, we are positioned to ensure our graduates are then equipped and inspired to subsequently stand on such a foundation.

Last year, St. Philip’s embarked on a $2 million fundraising campaign to properly launch a full middle school program over two years. To date, over $1.1 Million has been raised through 14 generous donors, thus allowing St. Philip’s to hire dynamic new faculty (Latin, Math, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts), a school counselor, and a Middle School Director. Funding also enabled the school to procure additional technology; begin implementation of its middle school curriculum, with a focus on The Arts, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship; kick-off a middle school athletics program; award tuition assistance; retrofit portables for 7th grade and begin renovation of our upstairs wing to house the full 6th – 8th grade program next school year.

St. Philip’s is committed to assisting middle school students and their families with confidently navigating through what can be deemed "the hardest part” of their schooling and development, especially in this day and age. “If this is the time when I’m supposed to be figuring out who I am and my destiny, I want to do it here at St. Philip’s where I know I am loved and my teachers want the best for me,” shared a middle school student. With proper guidance, support, a solid curriculum, and access to a variety of resources and experiences, we believe our students can overcome the challenges presented to them at middle and high school and become well-rounded people.

“Our students are building positive relationships with their peers and teachers,” says Dr. Henderson. “They love their new space. The growth I have witnessed with them in their Bible class is profound. They are moving onward and upward!”

St. Philip’s is committed to assisting middle school students and their families with confidently navigating through what can be deemed "the hardest part” of their schooling and development…

SAINTS FOOTBALL AND CHEER PROGRAMS SHINED THIS FALL

Our comprehensive athletic programs set a foundation of excellence through teamwork and self-confidence for over 700 student athletes annually. St. Philip’s SAINTS athletes develop leadership skills that go beyond the court or field. Their journey to greatness begins here! This year, our football team and cheer squad made a name for themselves in the Pop Warner Southeast Region.

The SAINTS FOOTBALL team has four divisions, for athletes ages 4-12, that compete in local and regional matches. Throughout the season, each division had stand-out leaders that helped lead the teams to victory. At Homecoming in October, the Flag and 12U divisions defeated the Mustangs on our turf. In November, the 10U and 12U football teams traveled to San Antonio and played Quarter Finals against San Antonio Cornerstone. The 10U team lost 6-0 and 12U won 26-12. Later, the 12U team went on to compete in Austin at the 2022 Calvo Conference and brought home the Semi-Finals Championship trophy! With that win, they advanced to the Regional Championships in Colorado where they played tough and displayed an exceptional amount of grit. We are so proud of the Saints football teams for working hard all season.

The SAINTS CHEERLEADERS are loud and proud on the sidelines and at competitions! Girls ages 3-12 who join our cheer program don’t just learn cheers, chants and dances. They are taught to embrace their individuality, to be tenacious, bold and collaborative. Their enthusiasm erupts from their voices and bodies as they cheer and dance with joy. This group has experienced tremendous growth, having doubled in size since 2019.

In November, the girls attended the Pop Warner Southeast Region Competition in Mansfield. It was the first ever performance for our Jr. Tiny Mite Squad (4 year olds). The Tiny Mite team (5-7 year olds) received 1st place in their division. The Jr. PeeWee team (811 year olds) weathered the storm of having several girls out due to illness that week and hit the floor strong. They did not advance to Nationals but received a good score.

Earlier in the fall, we came together with The Episcopal School of Dallas (ESD) , Sabine ISD, and Merging Vets & Players "MVP" at The Star in Frisco for the 1st Annual Battle at the Star hosted by the Lewis Family Foundation. Our flag football team and cheerleaders represented St. Philip’s well! Thank you to our friends at ESD for the invitation, we look forward to attending again.

Thank you to our coaches and parents who volunteer to make athletics at St. Philip’s a fun learning experience. Many athletes that come through our organization continue playing sports for years after they age-out of our programs. We believe that this is due in part to the foundation set when they were a St. Philip’s SAINT.

FORMER SAINT, TURNED SKYLINE RAIDER, SHINES AS AN SMU MUSTANG

The tremendous impact of our athletics program is undeniable. Here, athletes discover their passion, build life-long relationships and set on their path to greatness.

At 4-years-old, Isaiah Nwokobia touched a football for the first time, and immediately knew this could be something special. His mother enrolled him in our football program as an after-school activity while she was working. Very soon, this hobby turned into a lifestyle. Within a few seasons as a Saint, Isaiah realized this was the first thing he was truly good at. Between the ages of 4 and 12, Isaiah was consistently making significant plays and scoring touchdowns as quarterback for the Saints. At just 10 years old, he was already dreaming of college football.

Isaiah credits his success to the foundation instilled in him by Coach Jimmy and Coach Fletcher. As his mentor, Coach Jimmy transported Isaiah to and from practice, refined his skills, taught him to value teamwork and encouraged him to tackle challenges head on. He recalls the motto his team recited “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard”. Even when Isaiah knew he wasn’t the tallest, fastest, strongest or most talented player on the field, this saying influenced him to always work harder than the competition. It is this mindset that has taken him so far.

Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.

After graduating from Skyline where he was ranked the 48th safety product in the country, Nwokobia received twelve offers for college and ultimately chose Southern Methodist University (SMU), where he is now a sophomore. In his freshman year as a Mustang, Isaiah had 2 interceptions, 25 tackles and many other amazing feats. In the world of academics, Isaiah is doing just as well, maintaining a 3.0 grade point average. In the future, he plans to utilize his connections with alumni to intern with real estate brokers and eventually make a career in the industry.

When asked what words of encouragement Isaiah would give to the youth, he said “Believe in yourself! People will tell you it’s too hard, or you can’t do it. But you can do whatever you set your mind to.” The self-confidence he established as a St. Philip’s SAINT is the reason he speaks so boldly of the future.

ALUMNA JOINS ST. PHILIP’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES

...being able to share firsthand with other board members what St. Philip’s has done for me helps further the mission and impact...

Cynammon Burns Allen, Class of 2000, is a licensed attorney in both Texas and Georgia. She is a graduate of American University with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism and received her JD from Charlotte School of Law. Cynammon has been an active member of St. Philip’s Alumni Committee over the years where she has supported various alumni engagement activities. She is currently Managing Attorney at Burns Allen PLLC. We are thrilled to have her serve as the first alum to join the board of trustees.

“Being the first is a tremendous honor and privilege! I believe that being able to share firsthand with other board members what St. Philip’s has done for me, and my family and other families alike just helps further the mission and impact of St. Philip’s,” Burns Allen explains. The “impact” is what she remembers most about how her elementary school made her feel. “At a very young age, St. Philips instilled in me confidence in my own skin to be who I am and what God created me to be, no matter what!”

She and her husband have two beautiful children.

We want to know what our alumni are up to and all the wonderful things you are accomplishing. Please send photos, graduation announcements, career, and life events to Breanna Turnley, Individual and Alumni Giving Manager, at bturnley@stphilips.com

Village Strong

HIGHLIGHTING KEY COMMUNITY PARTNERS

St. Philip’s School and Community Center considers itself the “King of Collaboration.” Without the village of our volunteers, donors, and partners, St. Philip’s would not be able to have as big of an impact as it does in the community. This past summer and fall, we had enriching experiences with many volunteers through various projects supporting Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry, playground revitalization, campus sanitation, community clean-up and more.

Our extended “village” proves there is strength in numbers, and we are grateful to each organization, corporation, and school that donates their time, energy, and efforts to seeing transformation happen in real time as we service the families, students, and neighbors in our community. We are tremendously grateful to all the generous hearts and hands who make our important work possible.

The Young Men’s Service League of Dallas (YMSL)

Over 100 young men and their moms spent a Saturday this fall sanitizing our campus in preparation of the flu season, in addition to organizing, stocking and prepping for our biennial Cookin’ with Aunt Bette event. Their hard work ensured a healthy campus and generated a successful media event and well-stocked pantry for our clients. We are so grateful for YMSL members for their compassionate effort. It proved to be time well spent on our campus!

EY and Toyota

Just before Thanksgiving Break, St. Philip’s welcomed approximately 100 volunteers on campus from Ernst & Young (EY) and Toyota. EY has held its EY Connect volunteer days annually with St. Philip’s for several years and thoughtfully invited their corporate partner, Toyota, to join them for this year’s big project that tackled several areas of our campus.

It was a joy to witness EY and Toyota employees opening their hearts to St. Philip’s, while rolling up their sleeves to paint, rake, and renovate our 30+ year old legacy playground (not a small task!), and organize our curriculum closet, Art, and I-Lab classrooms. Their hard work through sweat equity always leaves St. Philip’s better and our students and faculty happier!

Episcopal School of Dallas (ESD)

The Episcopal School of Dallas has been a consistent and reliable partner of St. Philip’s School and Community Center for decades. This year, ESD students were able to service our community through the provision of collected items and goods from their annual “Fill the Bus” and “Holiday Box” programs. These efforts benefited hundreds of our athletic program participants and dozens of elderly neighbors vulnerable to hunger or loneliness.

WELCOMING NEW BOARD MEMBERS

Alice Korngold once said, “beyond the duties of care, loyalty, and obedience, there is, I suggest, a fourth board duty: the duty of imagination.” St. Philip’s School and Community Center’s Board of Trustees upholds the beauty of imagining a better world for South Dallas along with the tools and skills to practically see these hopes and dreams become a reality. The wisdom and direction of our Board is leading St. Philip’s toward new heights in which to better serve our neighbors through our vison of transforming the world through FAITH, EDUCATION, and SERVICE.

It is with great hope and abundant joy we welcome SIX new members to St. Philip’s Board of Trustees:

Cynammon Burns Allen

Gwendolyn George Will Haynes

Carter Tolleson

Kelly Turco

Wayne Warren

Events Recap

OUR FRIENDS & FAMILY WERE ALL IN FOR ST. PHILIP’S ON NORTH TEXAS GIVING DAY

The consistently amazing support of our donors proved we are stronger and better together by helping us reach our $100,000 goal for North Texas Giving Day. We appreciate all our friends and families for so thoughtfully choosing to support St. Philip’s official kick-off of the fundraising season toward our overall Annual Fund goal of $3 Million for this fiscal year.

The highlight of this year’s effort was the way in which our students, faculty, and staff showed they were indeed ALL IN for St. Philip’s with nearly 100 percent participation. Many thanks to our PSA for their generous contribution, the first of its kind from the PSA leadership for North Texas Giving Day. When we work together, anything is possible.

2ND ANNUAL BINGO, BBQ, & THE BLUES EVENT PUT THE FUN IN FUNDRAISING

Bingo Chairs, Cheryl & Greg Nelson and Paula & John Mitchell, Honorary Chair, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, and the members of Friends of St. Philip’s held its second annual fundraiser, Bingo, BBQ, & The Blues, on Wednesday, October 26th in the Snyder Activity Center. St. Philip’s auxiliary volunteer group raised approximately $180,000 in critical funds to support the mission and programs of St. Philip’s, specifically for faculty and staff appreciation efforts. The evening was filled with a lot of laughter, fun, delicious barbeque, and included tunes by DJ LC. The festive event featured ten games of bingo, six amazing raffle packages and was again emceed by Chris Arnold, Voice of the Mavs. The special occasion was enjoyed by over 400 guests (an increase from last year!) and friends. Special thanks to the event Host Committee and all the wonderful volunteers who helped make the night one of tremendous FUNdraising for St. Philip’s.

SPIRIT OF GRATITUDE SHINED AT BIENNIAL COOKIN’ WITH AUNT BETTE EVENT, BENEFITING COMMUNITY PANTRY

The second biennial COOKIN’ WITH AUNT BETTE event that shines light on the impact of St. Philip’s largest social service program - Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry – was a heartwarming and inspiring gathering of clients, partners, and volunteers. The spirit of gratitude and love that permeated throughout the event was undeniable and a perfect example of why so many have flocked to serve, to give, and support this effective program.

Dina Dixon, Sheila Pate, and Dotti Singhal, all of whom are dedicated volunteers of the pantry, served as co-chairs for the event that featured remarks from trustee, Grace Daniels , Chief External Affairs Officer of North Texas Food Bank, Erica Yaeger, Perot Family Headmaster, Dr. Terry J. Flowers, and St. Philip’s Chief Philanthropy Officer, Anyika McMillan-Herod. The purpose of the event was to shed light on the pantry’s success thus far, celebrate its partners and volunteers, announce the pantry’s expansion project, and provide a fun cooking demonstration to clients.

St. Philip’s alumna and professional chef, Gabrielle McBay (Chef Gabby), proved to be the highlight of this year’s event with her lively and delicious cooking demonstration that offered pantry clients and other attendees' opportunities to ask questions about her recipes, nutrition and more, in between a lot of laughter, smiles, and delightful smacking on her dish samples of cornbread, chili, and tea.

Many thanks to Dotti and Anupam Singhal for helping to underwrite the event and to Café Momentum for providing two sous chefs to assist Chef Gabby.

Guests had an opportunity to write down their thoughts and testimonials about the pantry. St. Philip’s big takeaway from the feedback is clear: What Aunt Bette’s means to so many is...LOVE!

IN MEMORIAM

“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day.”

DR. SHERRIL ENGLISH (1953 – 2022)

Our hearts are broken in the passing of our beloved former principal, Dr. Sherril English. Although we mourn, we rejoice in the amazing spirit of such a cherished woman of God. In addition to being a former faculty member, she was also a proud alumni parent to Brent and Britney English and devoted grandmother to Forrest, now a student at St. Philip’s. Sherril was a beautiful soul that exuded love for so many and was a true blessing to the St. Philip’s community. We are also hopeful that Sherril’s beautiful legacy will resonate deeply with the many lives she touched. We send our deepest condolences to the English family on her passing. It was indeed a privilege to have known, been taught, mentored and led by her. Her favorite phrase, “I’m so concerned” was a true representation of her devotion to all who loved and knew her. Her love, her light and well lived life will be remembered by her family, friends, students, and colleagues.

DARLENE GILES (1932 – 2022)

St. Philip’s send its love and condolences to the Giles family after the passing of former volunteer and receptionist, Darlene Giles, mother-in-law to longtime friend and supporter Clarice Tinsley Giles. Darlene was born January 4, 1932. Her friends and family remember her as a kind, honest and loving person. She was most proud of the many accomplishments of her children and grandchildren and bragged on them shamelessly. Her beautiful spirit will be missed immensely.

STACEY SNYDER (1964 – 2022)

Our hearts and prayers go out to the Snyder family in the sudden passing of our forever friend and supporter Stacey Snyder. Stacey was born in Detroit, MI but lived most of her life in the Dallas area. Her passion for international business, boxing and photography led her to a rewarding career pursuing all three of her primary interests. From the time she was four years old, she had a camera in her hand. Around the age of eight, her father took her to a boxing event that marked the beginning of her passionate dedication to the sport. Stacey combined her fascination for photography and boxing by pursuing boxing journalism. She gave her photos to amateur boxers and boxing publications around the world, allowing them to use her work without restrictions or payment. Stacey also managed and coordinated assets of SnyderCapital Corporation and served as President of The Snyder Foundation. Stacey graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1983. She always lived her life to the fullest and what mattered most to Stacy was her advocacy for the SPCA, Friends of Katy Trail, St. Philip’s School and Community Center, the boxing community and the wellbeing of her family, friends, and animals. We are grateful for her kindness and love.

St. Philip’s would also like to extend its deepest sympathies and condolences to Eddie Fletcher, Athletic Director, in the passing of his wife; Rachel Martin, Music teacher, in the passing of her grandfather; retired faculty member Antoinette Ashley, in the passing of her mother; friend and supporter Kevin Muskat in the passing of his father; longtime friends and volunteers, Susan and David McCombs , in the passing of David’s mother. So many have lost loved ones this year. May God continue to comfort and strengthen you during this time of bereavement.

MOMENTS FROM DR. ENGLISH’S MEMORIAL AT ST. PHILIP’S

THANKFUL FOR WHO I WAS

An Original Poem Dedicated to My First Principal by Tyler Jones, Class of 2008

The time I’ve had on this earth Was beyond what I thought I would have. Just because I gave my last breath Doesn’t mean I had my last day. After all the nights I prayed God gave me many suns to Live in my light of life. Setting fires to many souls, I finally get to cool down on life’s shore. Blessed to have lived this wonderful life Knowing forever still awaits my eyes.

MARGARET "BETTE" PEROT

1929 – 2023

St. Philip’s School and Community extends its deepest sympathies to the Perot family in the passing of their beloved Aunt Bette Perot, a life-long ambassador in the fight against hunger and the namesake for our very own impactful community pantry. It was a tremendous privilege to have the Perot family honor Aunt Bette with a very special birthday gift in 2019…that being $2 million to St. Philip’s’ We Believe Campaign to endow the community pantry and help sustain its future.

Bette Perot’s dedication to hunger relief is astounding, as she was instrumental in the founding of North Texas Food Bank, one of our long-standing community partners and she personally planted the seeds for St. Philip’s first food pantry over twenty years ago.

Through Aunt Bette and now, her legacy, the Perot family will continue to positively affect the lives of tens of thousands of neighbors and fellow citizens facing food insecurity for decades to come.

A Multitude of Milestones A Multitude of Milestones

A LETTER FROM OUR LEADERSHIP

There’s an African proverb that asks and answers wisely: “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” The 2021 – 2022 fiscal year for St. Philip’s charged our faculty/staff, volunteer leadership, and philanthropy team with several huge tasks. This included the school’s pivot back to in-person learning for all of its students, the wrap up of the organization’s multifaceted and multi-year We Believe Campaign, the return of our Athletics program, the launch of fundraising initiatives to support our “leap” toward a full middle school program and expansion of Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry, the pursuit of the organization’s largest Annual Fund goal of $2.9M, AND the celebration of St. Philip’s Diamond “75th Anniversary” year of ministry!

Whew! To say our hands and hearts were full is an understatement. However, we approached the year and every task with that age old wisdom – “one bite at a time.” We might also add that it was very clear from the beginning that God was blessing our EVERY effort. Fiscal Year ‘22 proved to be one of the most fruitful and impactful years of growth, and resource building for St. Philip’s. The momentum from the prior year’s responsiveness from so many volunteers, partners, and friends during the height of the pandemic of Fiscal Year ‘21, grew exponentially.

We firmly believe St. Philip’s is a place God called to be. We also believe God intentionally calls every volunteer, every trustee, every partner organization, and every donor and friend who so compassionately opens their hearts to St. Philip’s mission and thus chooses to so generously share their time and treasure to empower our efforts.

This belief was evident in the tremendous milestone success reflected in this annual report. Not only did St. Philip’s meet its largest Annual Fund goal, but it exceeded it in the third quarter (a first)! In fact, the Destiny Award Luncheon met its own milestone goal of $1M, representing nearly a third of the Annual Fund. The return to in-person School and community center activities such as athletics and mentoring was implemented with excellence. The launch of our expanded Middle School program yielded over $1.1M and emboldened St. Philip’s to hire critical new faculty, prepare innovative curriculum, and renovate classrooms. We Believe Campaign CoChairs, Bill Lively and Roland Parrish, along with Honorary Chair, Bobby Lyle , helped St. Philip’s reach the end of this transformative campaign. Finally, the 75th Anniversary was met with a once in a lifetime soiree at Union Station and the publication of a lovely coffee table book underwritten by our dear friends, Schatzie and George T. Lee, Jr.

On behalf of our dedicated faculty, staff, and every child, every family, and every neighbor impacted by our ministry, we extend our sincerest appreciation and gratitude to every donor and friend listed in this Annual Report (reflecting contributions made from July 1, 2021 – June 30, 2022) who were so moved to join St. Philip’s in this important, noble, and transformative work.

Our success is a result of your joyful giving! We thank God for each of you.

In gratitude,

Words of Appreciation from a St. Philip's Parent

Dear Angel,

Words cannot express how thankful and grateful my family is for your generous donation to ensure that my child has the best educational foundation. Without your act of kindness, my daughter would have had to withdraw and attend another school.

What I love most about St. Philip’s is how the environment is very welcoming and the community and school embraces the whole child. My goal for my daughter is to receive a sound educational foundation so that she will excel well above our expectations.

Your act of kindness not only surprised me but has inspired our family to one day be able to give back to other deserving families. May God continue to shower His blessings on you and your family.

WORDS OF APPRECIATION FROM A CLIENT OF AUNT BETTE’S COMMUNITY PANTRY

I had nowhere to turn to when I lost my job due to the pandemic. I’ve never needed help for anything. I live in this neighborhood and always appreciated St. Philip’s but I never thought I would personally need one of its services.

When you’re out of work, young, have bills to pay and little money or food, you gotta do what you need to survive. For me, that was asking for help. That was humbling myself. I’ve always trusted St. Philip’s and I’m grateful for the support. There’s no shame in getting support from the pantry either.

Aunt Bette’s is really a light in a place where people have real needs of love, compassion, and resources. The pantry serves people regardless of color, social status, or religion. That’s God’s way. Thank you St. Philip’s and donors for caring for so many of us who live here and struggle.

WAYS TO SUPPORT ST. PHILIP’S: TIME, TALENT, & TREASURE

St. Philip’s has thrived through the tremendous support provided by a dedicated community of alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends. For decades, St. Philip’s School and Community Center has embodied excellence, in large part because our community has given generously of its time, talents, and treasures. There are many creative opportunities to make a contribution to the important work of St. Philip’s School and Community Center.

PLANNED GIVING – St. Philip’s is excited to announce the establishment of the DR. BARBARA CAMBRDIGE GIVING CIRCLE, our planned giving program. Are you considering including St. Philip’s in your estate planning? If your family would like to leave a LASTING LEGACY at St. Philip’s by making contributions through a bequest to St. Philip’s in your will or naming St. Philip’s as a co-beneficiary in a life insurance policy, please contact our Philanthropy Department at aherod@stphilips.com or 214.421.5221 ext. 238, for more information.

CONSIDER EMPLOYEE CORPORATE GIVING – St. Philip’s receives designated funds through the United Way (#180), the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), and State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC).

DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT WITH MATCHING GIFTS – Many employers match gifts by current and retired employees. This is an easy way to double your monetary gift or place a monetary value of your volunteer time to St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Contact the Human Resources office of your employer for the form to match your gift to St. Philip’s.

SECURITIES – Raymond James is the primary securities trader for St. Philip’s School and Community Center. By donating securities to St. Philip’s through Raymond James, 100% of the value of your securities is awarded to the School. Contact the Philanthropy Office for more information at philanthropy@stphilips.com or 214.421.5221 ext. 239.

SHOP AND SHARE – St. Philip’s benefits from your shopping with Kroger, Tom Thumb, Target and GoodSearch.

THE GIFT OF TIME – From landscaping to mentoring, there are many ways that you or your business/ employers can become part of making an impact in the South Dallas area. We need your hands, too.

DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT TO ST. PHILIP’S WITH A MATCHING GIFT!

After making a contribution, confirm if your company or organization provides matching donations. Follow the steps to have your gift matched and join other donors who have doubled, and in some cases tripled their impact on the St. Philip’s ministry.

EXCURSIONS

St. Philip’s believes in educating the whole child by providing students with opportunities to engage and unfold their natural curiosity. Exposure to enriching academic excursions, like our Civil Rights trip, allow our scholars a deepened and more meaningful understanding of history, culture and God's divine design.

SERVICE- EARNING PROJECTS

Students at each grade level are required to participate in community /service-learning projects throughout the year. We believe the projects reinforce the philosophy that "to whom much is given, much is required". Students leave St. Philip's knowing the importance of gratitude and service.

PROJECT- BASED LEARNING

PBL supports St. Philip’s efforts to empower students for servant leadership and community/ global awareness. Students in all grade levels learn by collaboratively addressing complex, real-world issues through research, investigations, and relative product design. Students engage in scaffolded learning and reflection throughout long-term projects and meaningful contributions, responding to complex, multi-faceted questions.

STEAM ACTIVITIES

Programs and spaces like our science fair and I-Lab, along with corporate partnerships with companies like TI, are exposing our scholars to the world of STEAM and preparing them for future careers that have not been created yet.

CULTURAL AWARENESS

Beyond the African American culture that is celebrated year-round, our students also learn about other cultures around the world. From Hispanic Heritage Month to Native American heritage, our students learn to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of the global world.
