At St. Philip’s School and Community Center, we believe that true and lasting transformation begins with a mission—one that refuses to falter. This year’s theme, Mission Unstoppable, encapsulates our commitment to positively impacting the lives of our families and neighbors.
Through the pages of this issue of 1600 Magazine, you will read about our cases of inspiration and impact. Guided by FAITH, driven by a passion for EDUCATION, and dedicated to SERVICE, St. Philip’s is addressing the needs of those in our community and beyond.
Here, you will find powerful stories showcasing how we empower students through academics and athletics, combat hunger at Aunt Bette's Community Pantry, and build a foundation of stability through housing and economic revitalization projects in South Dallas.
Despite delays, obstacles, and unexpected challenges, the tenacity of the St. Philip's leadership, board and greater community has ensured our God-ordained assignments are accomplished. Every parent, donor, volunteer, employee, and alumnus is an agent, playing an integral role in advancing the ministry. Our success is proof that with God, collective effort and perseverance, we can overcome any challenge.
We invite you to accept the mission— explore how our school and community center are expanding the possibilities for all we serve and get involved.
Together, we make this Mission Unstoppable!
AN UNSTOPPABLE FORCE
Mission Unstoppable is our theme for the 202425 school year. It is befitting on multiple levels. From our meager beginnings in 1946 as a small mission church, we have sustained unlikely success in a neighborhood that has been wrought with violations, insults, opposition and challenges. That small mission church, which vowed to be responsive to the surrounding community has endured the test of time in a forsaken territory just 1.5 miles from downtown Dallas. Today, thousands of lives are mightily impacted through the works of the ministry of St. Philip’s School and Community Center.
Despite a historical trail of turbulence, trials and tribulations, construction is now underway for the Moody Performing and Fine Arts Center! As this project progresses, a flood of factors that most would have allowed to morph into excuses have been defused. This project is a manifestation of the unstoppable and the steadfast love, sacrifices, and prayers of our staff, supporters and volunteers. This project was not deterred. COVID, code issues, permitting, price escalation and cash-flow were not able to cease this much needed expansion.
Our mission to meet the needs of area youth who aspire to gain entry into THE Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts is being actualized. Our new fine arts center will
provide space and artistic support programing for youth who desire to further develop and refine their skills. With our provision of evening and weekend facilities, we will complement area arts organizations and initiatives. Additional performance space for the arts community is becoming a reality.
A culinary arts studio and space for our students and local small businesses will serve as a blessing to many. Additional classroom space to adequately support our dynamic digital design, visual arts and performance creations will elevate the brilliance of those we serve. Gallery space and a pavilion gathering feature will present our neighborhood with a place for fellowship and social engagement. Provisions for the student body and the neighborhood will be uplifted with the additions of a music and podcast recording space and a dance studio.
The We Believe campaign has not stopped despite the myriad of obstacles we encountered. The campaign was expected to last three years, but years later we have no doubt that what God ordained cannot be stopped. As our students pray each day, “THY WILL BE DONE.”
We move deeper into the 2024-25 school year with gratitude and greater expectations. We have learned that the longer the anticipation, the greater the appreciation. We have been transformed from we believe to we know God’s will is unstoppable.

This project is a manifestation of the unstoppable and the steadfast love, sacrifices, and prayers of our staff, supporters and volunteers.
Have you ever wondered what makes St. Philip’s School and Community Center such a special place? Yes, we serve over 8,000 members of our community. Of course, our students are accepted to the best private and public schools upon graduation. There’s no doubt that our students learn in unique ways like Project-Based Learning and experiencing academic excursions. But those are not what make us special. It's the interconnectedness of our mission, where the three cords of Faith, Education, and Service are woven into everything we do.
St. Philip’s is more than just an exceptional school; it is a place where our students receive a foundation of faith in God in an environment that celebrates a love of learning. It is this love of learning and our faith that gives us the noble responsibility of service. Our students learn, and our parents and faculty believe that to transform our world, it cannot be done apart from faith, education, and service. Our students grow to be alumni who are not only successful in their careers
as doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and the like, but they also contribute by making the world and their communities better through service, love, and grace to all they encounter.
Gandhi cautions us on the dangers of knowledge without character. While we know that our academic program is exceptional, St. Philip’s School and Community Center is equally intentional about our impact on the lives of others. Service to others permeates our building through our school division service-learning days, Middle School weekly service in the food pantry, along with our faculty and staff service days.
In defining change agents, we must study historical examples such as Harriet Tubman who, despite the harsh Fugitive Slave Law, went back to the South to help others escape the bondage of slavery. Martin Luther King Jr. who, despite many attempts on his life, continued to speak up about the injustices that African Americans faced. Oscar Romero advocated for human rights during the El Salvador Civil Unrest. He was convinced that he had to do more than simply talk about the struggle. Change agents are anchored by their faith and concern for others and put their knowledge into action. When we say that we transform the world by faith, education, and service, that is the spirit we cultivate in our students. We remain convinced that our mission is unstoppable; we only need to be alert because God is using our students, community, and staff to truly transform this world.
Kellee Murrell, George T. Lee Principal
Faith, Education and Service are equally represented in all our programs and when joined together they yield extraordinary impact.

St. Philip’s School and Community Center is a dynamic institution dedicated to serving a diverse population. Our school provides a nurturing environment where students in PK-8th grade thrive. Rooted in the values of love of God, love of others, love of self, and love of learning, St. Philip’s embraces a holistic approach to education, emphasizing academic excellence, character development, and community engagement.

Innovative academic practices include teaching a grade ahead and integrating STEM, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship into the curriculum.

AGENTS OF FAITH
At St. Philip’s students learn that “it’s okay to pray and make an A.”
We acknowledge that faith is the catalyst for incredible transformation and encourage our scholars to develop an individual relationship with God. Through daily chapel, Bible study and faith-infused instruction, St. Philip's provides several opportunities to deepen their faith.
STUDENT TESTIMONIAL
My name is Tyson Sylvester, and I consider myself fortunate to be a part of the St. Philip's community. At St. Philip's, I am free to express my faith through prayer without any hesitation. The opportunity to pray openly and in the company of others is a privilege that I deeply appreciate. It is through these prayers that I feel the presence of God in my life.
Another reason I am glad I attend St. Philip's is the joy I find in learning about God. Chapel time is a special part of my day, where I get to go deeper into my faith and understand more about what God does for me. Chapel is not just a place, but a space filled with good memories, like the time I led the Lord's prayer and felt truly involved.
My teachers, throughout the day, remind me to treat people with kindness, a lesson that is important to me. In class, we also do faithbased activities. We have Bible study and ABC Bible verses. I like these because they get me closer to Jesus.

EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS IN THE ARTS
The St. Philip's Fine Arts Department is excited to be on a mission to expand our arts programming in our new space, The Moody Performing and Fine Arts Center. After many years of planning and pausing, we are excited that our groundbreaking ceremony has taken place, and the foundation will soon be laid.
In the meantime, we are continuing to provide excellence in the arts that build student pathways of success beyond our walls. The Fine Arts Department is welcoming new member Ms. Pamela Bailey, our new visual art teacher, who is merging the worlds of digital arts with traditional mediums to create an exciting year of arts innovation. We are also welcoming our new strings partner Swan Strings led by harpist, Ms. Jess Garland, who teaches classical guitar to our fifth graders. Additionally, while not new to the team, he is new to the position, our beloved Mr. Menkiti Rice is now teaching Lower School Music, creating opportunities for our students to learn instruments at an earlier age.
You shouldn’t be surprised if you hear Miles Davis, or the Beatles being played on recorder in our halls! Ms. Rachel Martin and I are partnering together in a most dynamic way to offer our Middle School students a semester of Movement n' Musical Theater. This class focuses deeply on the art of movement theater while providing the students an opportunity to strengthen their vocal skills! Visit campus in Spring of 2025 for "Movement of the People" to watch these skills played out on stage!
If you are ready to join our mission, reach out to me via email at aholmes@stphilips.com. We love guest teachers, volunteers, and supply donations. And we love YOU!

A New Approach to CULTIVATING RELATIONSHIPS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
This school year, St. Philip’s instructors are transitioning into a more effective and engaged learning environment by introducing the Responsive Classroom approach. Responsive Classroom is an evidence-based teaching method that emphasizes the connection between academic success and social-emotional skills.
Educators integrate four key domains: engaging academics, a positive community, developmentally responsive teaching, and effective management. These components encourage students to take ownership of their learning through interactive and active engagement, while fostering a sense of belonging.
In the first few weeks of the school year, we’ve seen students eagerly anticipate the personalized morning messages that teachers display as they enter class. These messages range from brain breaks to prompts connected to upcoming lessons, which prime students for learning. Students are now more intentional with their words, and public speaking has become a regular practice which helped them conquer fears and fine-tune important skills.
In Middle School, we conduct Responsive Advisory Meetings (RAM), a structured routine designed to meet the social and emotional needs of adolescents. RAM builds meaningful relationships with both teachers and peers through four components: an arrival welcome, announcements, acknowledgments, and an activity. As we’ve built out our new Middle School Program, these meetings have been instrumental in establishing rapport and trust. RAMs create a safe and consistent space for students to connect and learn the language of the classroom community and encourages them to actively contribute to their learning environment.
Instructors and scholars participate in open conversations that are respectful, non-judgmental, and inclusive as a group and existing relationships are strengthened. This strong foundation is already shaping a positive, engaged learning experience for all.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES
We are excited to share the positive impact our new Student Support Services (SSS) Team is making within the St. Philip’s community. Their dedication to ensuring every teacher and student has the resources they need to succeed is truly commendable. Our increased support is assisting families by helping them find the right tools and strategies for their students to thrive academically and emotionally. The SSS team encourages open communication between faculty and parents to discuss any concerns or needs regarding their child's support. We are excited about upcoming SSSsponsored events like Parent University for both students and families. Throughout the year, topics such as ADHD, executive functioning, stress management, study skills, and mental health awareness will be covered through workshops and educational presentations.
Our new SSS Team is already making a significant difference in the lives of our students and families, and they work tirelessly to create a welcoming environment where students feel safe to express their needs. Through their efforts, many students have reported feeling more confident in their abilities and right to use their voices. The feedback from families has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing relief and gratitude for the resources now available to their children. We are proud of the progress being made and excited to see the growth in our students.
We are grateful for the strong partnership we have with our families and appreciate your ongoing support in helping us create a nurturing and effective learning environment for all our students. Thank you for being an essential part of our SPSCC family.

Case 004: Community Impact
SENIORS ON THE MOVE!
At St. Philip’s, our Community Advancement Office is dedicated to providing seniors with services focused on convenience, wellness, and community. In a world often captivated by youth, we are committed to creating a warm and inclusive environment for senior adults in South Dallas. This year, nearly 100 of our seniors participated in activities that celebrated health, connection, and joy.
Chair Yoga , led by our very own Ms. Tiana Bratcher, a certified Yoga instructor and doula, was one of the highlights. Ms. Bratcher guided participants through gentle, intentional movements designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, and circulation, while boosting mood. Many participants shared that the sessions enhanced their physical and emotional well-being.
Social events like the Fancy Hat Tea Party and the Senior Soirée offered memorable experiences where nearly 60 seniors gathered at each event to reminisce, laugh, enjoy fine food, and dance to music from their youth. These events were made exceptional by generous donations from Little Greek and Preston Hollow Catering, alongside lively music and line-dancing led by Myra Jones’s Inspirational Soul Line Dance Company. Volunteer support from the Top Ladies of Distinction, Top Teens of America, and many others made these gatherings truly special. Guests left feeling grateful, expressing a heartfelt wish that the celebrations could last even longer.
Throughout the school year, line-dancing sessions at the WeCreation Center were another avenue for connection, and were attended by 10 regular participants. Each session led by Myra Jones began and ended with prayer, and was infused with joy and laughter. These 60 minutes together were a celebration of life, faith, and community, showing how exercise can nourish the body and soul. Having lived through challenging times the seniors in our community are resilient. St. Philip’s is proud to honor them, as we cultivate a spirit of gratitude and respect that resonates across generations. We remain committed to making their lives richer, and we’re proud to pass on this legacy of care and appreciation to future generations.

SUMMERTIME FUN
This past summer, over 200 children experienced an unforgettable 6-week journey at our camp, designed to nurture their faith, enrich their minds, and help them grow as individuals. Our curriculum was carefully crafted to build upon faith-based education, reading, math, and science. There were grade-level milestones that ensured every child learned at their own pace while meeting key objectives and reducing summer learning loss. Every morning began with an inspiring chapel service, where students learned valuable lessons about shining their light, adapting to change, and having faith when facing fear.
The camp wasn't just about academics; students also celebrated diversity, culture, and community. One of the highlights was our Juneteenth day of rememberance celebration, where students immersed themselves in the history of this important day. They enjoyed a day of learning, reflecting, and indulging in delicious food that brought history to life in a meaningful and memorable way.
Sports and fitness played a big part in our camp experience as well. We were thrilled to partner with the Girl Scouts of Dallas and Jayden Owens from the Texas Legends to host an all-girls basketball clinic. This empowering event inspired young girls to build confidence on and off the court. Meanwhile, our lacrosse camp attracted over 10 enthusiastic students, introducing them to the exciting world of this dynamic sport.

AT A GLANCE: Community Impact
In addition to our in-house programs, we had the privilege of sending seven students to Camp Ozark in Bandera, Texas. This life-changing experience gave these campers a week of faith-based activities, new friendships, and team-building challenges that helped them grow in ways they never imagined. The joy they brought back with them was contagious, and their stories of fun, fellowship, and spiritual growth left a lasting impact on all of us.
This summer wouldn't have been as amazing without the incredible support of our partners and sponsors. A huge thank you to Bernice’s Cajun Kitchen for sponsoring delicious lunches for our hardworking summer staff. Brighter Bites kept us healthy with their weekly delivery of fresh fruits and veggies, while All-Star Project of Dallas provided our staff with invaluable team-building activities that strengthened our sense of community.
Special thanks to Crystal Dudley of Love and Logic , Tamasha Govan from Mathfinder, and Menkiti Rice for AI training who contributed to our professional development and enhanced our camp's curriculum.
Our students also explored their creative side through Drama Classes with Annie Helfrich and a lively Book Club led by Julie Fidalgo, both of whom encouraged our campers to express themselves and foster a love for the arts and literature. We are deeply grateful to The Dallas Links for their National Service Day and to Origins Bank for their generous grant which helped make this summer camp a reality.
Last, but certainly not least, we want to thank our parents. Your trust in us to care for and guide your most precious possessions your children — means the world. Together, we created a summer that will stay in their hearts and minds forever. Here’s to the memories made and the future ahead!
TACKLING ILLEGAL DUMPING
ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE GRANT
St. Philip's is celebrating our first Environmental Justice Grant of $500,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce environmental impact and improve public health by removing and preventing illegal dumping in the South Dallas Forest District over three years (2025-2027). This builds on our current successful collaboration with the EPA on two Brownfield Remediation Grants totaling $1.3M to support the assessment and cleanup of existing brownfield sites.
St. Philip’s is dedicated to enhancing our community’s environment and public health by addressing illegal dumping and implementing long-term prevention measures. Through targeted cleanup efforts and communitydriven solutions, we’re making strides toward a healthier, safer South Dallas for all.
Cleaning up dumped waste not only reduces air and soil pollution but also helps create safer outdoor spaces for families, workers, and children. Illegal dumping spreads harmful particulate matter through the air and can seep into waterways, posing significant risk to our neighbors. Removing this waste not only improves air and water quality but also reduces the prevalence of pests and rodents; this leads to fewer public health challenges. This cleanup project aims to make our neighborhoods healthier and more enjoyable overall as it continues to grow.
. HERE’S HOW WE’RE PUTTING THIS AWARD TO WORK:
COMMUNITY OUTREACH & SITE IDENTIFICATION:
With community support, St. Philip’s is identifying priority areas for cleanup across 57 lots within the surrounding south Dallas area. We’re gathering insights from monthly community meetings, public surveys, and drive-by surveys to identify impacted areas.
CLEANUP EFFORTS:
BUILDING A DATABASE:
A specialized firm will create a real-time database of sites requiring cleanup. This system will track locations, cleanup needs, and progress, allowing us to efficiently prioritize and respond to sites based on environmental and safety impact.
St. Philip’s will partner with expert cleanup crews to remove waste. In cases where non-hazardous waste is present, community-driven cleanups will foster neighborhood involvement and keep cleanup efforts manageable.
PREVENTING FUTURE DUMPING:
To discourage further illegal dumping, St. Philip’s plans to install artful barriers, “no dumping” signage, lighting, and security cameras in targeted areas. Property owners of identified lots will also participate in decisions on measures to prevent repeat offenses.
ONGOING MONITORING & MAINTENANCE:
We understand that preventative measures alone can’t fully eliminate illegal dumping. Through regular drive-by surveys and community feedback, we’ll monitor conditions and coordinate additional cleanups as needed.
Thanks to the support from the City of Dallas, the St. Philip’s cleanup initiative will continue beyond the EPA grant period, sustaining the positive impact and keeping our neighborhoods safe, clean, and vibrant.

MOODY GROUNDBREAKING
A warm Texas morning greeted over 120 guests who witnessed the culmination of years of hard work on the “We Believe” campaign: the groundbreaking ceremony for the Moody Performing & Fine Arts Center (Moody Center). For eight, seemingly never to end, years, our St. Philip’s family waited patiently (mostly) for September 10 to arrive. The enthusiasm for this effort from the honorary chairs of the We Believe campaign, Bill Lively, Bobby Lyle, and Roland Parrish never dimmed nor abated. “Their steadfast leadership of fundraising efforts has at long last borne fruit with this groundbreaking,” said Terry Flowers, Perot Family Headmaster.
Guests heard inspiring words from Regina Taylor, a Golden Globe Award winning actress and native Dallasite, and from St. Philip’s eighth grade student, Ellington Young. Ms. Taylor summed up what the impact the Moody Center can bring to the community, “What you will have here is the opportunity to give our community a safe space to try new art techniques and our aspiring performers a place where experimentation in expression is encouraged.”
Miss Young’s performance of spoken word amazed and delighted the crowd – and provided our guests a glimpse into the promise of how the Moody Center can impact South Dallas youth. “This space will enable our students and those students beyond our walls to fully develop their gifts and be the next generation of creative artists,” said Iv Amenti, Fine Arts Director at St. Philip’s.
The attendees were also witness to a water libation ceremony where Pastor Chris Simmons formally anointed the soil. Signaling the formal start of construction of the Moody Center, representatives from the Moody Foundation, the Rees-Jones Foundation, the Snyder and Eastland families blessed and turned the soil. Scheduled to open in August 2025, the Moody Center will encompass over 12,600 square feet of new construction and over 5,200 square feet of renovations to the existing structure.
The Moody Center features a 300-person auditorium and performance hall, new studios for art design, dance, music, theater, and South Dallas’ first digital design and sound studio. In addition, a culinary arts studio will be available to enable catering entrepreneurs to thrive in our local community.
Limited sponsorship opportunities remain available. Contact Matilda Louree, Director of Campaign Operations, at mlouree@stphilips.com, for more information.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATES
St. Philip's School and Community Center is experiencing exciting growth, marked by significant progress on key construction projects that will serve our community for years to come.
The much-anticipated retail development on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard is nearing completion. Finishing touches are underway to welcome Ruthie’s Cafe, Sweet & Chill, featuring Frios Gourmet Pops and other desserts. These new establishments will provide delicious dining options, provide delicious dining options and long-awaited opportunities for economic growth.
Another major milestone is the demolition of the Plaza of Promise, a long-standing eyesore that had been a hotspot for undesirable activity. With the site cleared, our community can now look forward to a safer and more inviting environment. This change not only removes a source of blight but also makes way for fresh opportunities to reimagine this vital space, just across the street from Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry.
Plans for Promise Park are now underway, representing the next chapter in our mission to create safe, welcoming outdoor spaces for all. When completed, Promise Park will be a haven where families and neighbors can gather, exercise, and thrive in an environment that celebrates togetherness. It will include a walking trail, improved athletics fields with a ball hockey court sponsored by the Dallas Stars, a playground and a food pavilion.
These projects embody St. Philip's commitment to revitalizing our neighborhood, fostering unity, and building a brighter future. Together, we are creating spaces that reflect our shared values and aspirations. We believe that providing people with a dynamic education, exposure to the arts, and physical development, can inspire and change lives. Keep an eye out for more updates as we continue to rejuvenate South Dallas!
Case 005: Athletics
SPSCC SPORTS ARE FAITH, EDUCATION AND SERVICE IN ACTION.
On Sunday, February 9, 2025, New Orleans will host the 59th Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is among the world's most-watched single sporting events and frequently commands the largest audience among all American broadcasts during the year. Also on Sunday, February 9, 2025, churches all over the world will open their doors to host both the saved and unsaved to share the GOSPEL (Good News) of Jesus Christ. Sunday morning worship is among the most popular time for people to gather in reverence of our God. On February 9, 2025, football fans and faithful church goers will have a common theme of winning etched in their hearts and minds. Winning is everything. Winning in sports is not everything because one team will prevail, and the other team will try again next year.
Winning in faith is essential to eternal life, this is a big deal. This year the teams at SPSCC are in rebuilding mode. So, winning has not been the highlight of our season. Yet as we rebuild physically, mentally and relationally, we are focused on winning where it matters most, in life. Sports are but one avenue St. Philip’s uses to draw young people together and impress on their hearts the love of Jesus Christ.
St. Philip’s athletic program credits its epic beginnings as an outreach ministry of the Episcopal churches some 65 years ago. The program was founded in response to the community’s need to provide safe and supervised activities for children and youth living in the Forest District Neighborhood. Often the vision God provides doesn’t necessarily look like a ministry to the natural eye, but the vision for an athletic program meets both a spiritual and physical need. The children need a place to go after school. They need food to eat and a place to be welcomed and comfortable. They need to be heard. They need to be seen. They need to be cared for and cared about.
Over 1,500 athletes participate in St. Philip’s athletic program. The youth athletic program includes football, basketball, cheer/dance, soccer, baseball, track, and lacrosse. We plan to add jump rope, golf, tennis, rowing, swimming and volleyball to the menu of available sports. We are also making plans to add an adult athletic program that will include basketball, soccer, jump rope and dance. This ministry continues to evolve into what is needed for those we serve in and around the Forest District. The volunteers leading these programs build on the foundation of keeping children safe and supervised.
We are reminded of a homily by Pastor Stephen Brown where we were encouraged to Put God first, Others second, and Ourselves third. The athletic program is a literal example and direct result of the local churchgoers. Through the years, many coaches with varied interests and skills have served as volunteers giving of their time, energy, knowledge, and experiences for the benefit of others. Good volunteers are instrumental at SPSCC.
“Sports are but one avenue St. Philip’s uses to draw young people together and impress on their hearts the love of Jesus Christ.” - MARGERTREE HOLMES
The following characteristics denote valuable volunteers:
PASSIONATE ABOUT THE CAUSE THEY'RE SUPPORTING
COMPASSIONATE TOWARDS THOSE THEY SERVE
COMMITTED TO THE CAUSE DEPENDABLE AND DEDICATED
Recently, the athletic program required some of its long-term volunteers to take on more responsibility and lead not only their teams but also their peers. These coaches not only have the passion, compassion, commitment, and dedication necessary to serve in this capacity, but they also have servant-hearts and relentlessly pursue excellence. Each week as they learned together in these new roles, they gained a better understanding of pros and cons of the program identifying ways to improve. This is a year of re-building, and this group is perfect for the task ahead of them. Below are a few pictures of those who have already gone above and beyond in this season.
VOLUNTEER COACHES
At St. Philip’s, it is our responsibility to make sure sports are serving us rather than us serving sports. Our program of team sports teaches virtues, builds character, facilitates leadership qualities, provides social interaction, models teamwork and creates community. Patience, courage, and integrity can be found in every sport. Children learn real-world lessons by overcoming the mental and physical obstacles sports present. Truths that are difficult to communicate in theory suddenly make sense when athletes participate in sports.
A tackle won’t be the biggest hit our children take in life. We’ll need to train them to be tough as well as compassionate. It is our goal to teach youth how to win with grace and lose with honor. We use sports to grow more like Christ. Sports at St. Philip’s are a tool of faith, education and service.

Athletics In Action
“Middle School sports is off to a great start! Offerings include volleyball, basketball, track and field, and we look forward to implementing a rowing team in collaboration with Dallas United Crew. Our teams participate in the Independent Athletic Association (IAA) league and the momentum from last year's season is strong! PROFESSIONAL
PIVOTS
Reuben Lael Griffin's story is proof that when guided by core values, the pivot from one profession to another can lead to extraordinary achievements. His legacy, rooted in the ministry of St. Philip’s, serves as an inspiration.
St. Philip’s School and Community Center has long recognized that an excellent education—second only to faith in God—is key to develop potential. Offering a unique college preparatory program infused with spirituality, self-determination, and service, we prepare students for a lifetime of impact.
For Reuben, St. Philip’s was more than a school; it was the foundation of a remarkable journey. As a dynamic R&B singer, songwriter, educator, and advocate, Reuben has captivated audiences with his soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics. Growing up in a musical family in Dallas, he was exposed to diverse genres that shaped his distinctive sound—a fusion of old-school R&B and contemporary pop. His music not only entertains but also delivers powerful messages of social justice and empowerment.
During the pandemic, Reuben took his artistry to new heights, releasing Stand Up, a soulful anthem reminiscent of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On and Sam Cooke’s A Change Is Gonna Come. The song, inspired by his childhood lessons of faith and activism, became a rallying cry for his generation to take action and create change. During this time, Reuben also organized a "Pack the Polls" car caravan through Dallas neighborhoods to encourage voter participation.
Reuben’s commitment to service doesn’t stop at music. Today as an educator, he uses fine arts to inspire and motivate children to excel both academically and creatively. He is deeply involved with nonprofits and civic organizations, including the National Urban League Young Professionals group in Dallas, where he recently became president.
A proud graduate of Southern University and A&M College - Baton Rouge, Reuben holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science and public administration. His professional journey includes over a decade in university administration at institutions like the Dallas County Community College District and the University of Texas at Dallas.
In addition to his roles as a musician and educator, Reuben is the creative director of his own brand design company, which supports small businesses with high-quality media content. He follows in the entrepreneurial footsteps of his parents, Linda Lorraine Reed-Griffin, the first Black school board trustee for Garland ISD, and Rev. Dr. Roosevelt Almond Griffin, founding pastor of St. Mark Baptist Church in Garland, Texas.
Reuben’s artistry has earned him performances alongside notable acts like Mint Condition, Raheem DeVaughn, Erykah Badu, and Chrisette Michele. His EP, Heart of the Matter, and single, Go Tell It featuring Candy West, showcase his talent and vision. His work has also been featured at prestigious events like the Black Music and Civil Rights Movement Concert hosted by the Black Academy of Arts and Letters.
From the halls of St. Philip’s to stages across the country, Reuben Lael’s progress is a testament to the power of faith, education, and service. Through his music, advocacy, and teaching, he continues to let his light shine—uplifting others and making a lasting impact on the world.

CONGRATS!
FROM STUDENTS TO ROLE MODELS
Twins Sidney and Kaitlin Stubbs, Class of 2007, have carried the love of God, love of self, love of learning and love of others instilled in them at St. Philip’s into every aspect of their lives.
In the 2024 school year, they began faithfully visiting campus on Fridays for DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time with Early Childhood students before Chapel. The Stubbs siblings exemplify the power of giving back.
“This is where I got my love for science and reading,” Kaitlin reflects. “I wanted to spark some kind of love for reading in these students. I have so many amazing memories of my teachers, and I just want to be able to give back to the new students.”
After graduating from St. Philip’s, the Stubbs twins attended Bishop Dunne Catholic School and graduated in 2013. The continued their academic journeys at Abilene Christian University, where they earned their degrees in 2017. Sidney pursued law at Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston and is now working as a Family Attorney. Kaitlin completed her Master’s in Biology at the University of Texas at Arlington and serves as an Investigator with the USDA.
For Kaitlin, her career has opened doors for her love for travel and she explores countries she once dreamed of visiting. She also finds joy and grace in ballroom dancing, which she describes as a beautiful outlet for self-expression.
Sidney’s passions for reading and travel reflect her deep curiosity and love for learning. “I love St. Philip’s,” Sidney shares. “It opened my eyes to a new part of my culture. St. Philip’s is a family—my family.”
Through their careers and personal passions, the Stubbs twins honor the legacy of St. Philip’s. They are proof our mission to transform the world by faith, education and service travels far beyond the walls of St. Philip’s.

Case 007: The Village
VOLUNTEER GROUPS
Our mission to serve and uplift the community would not be possible without the dedication of our volunteers. From corporate groups to individual supporters, each of you has played a vital role in ensuring that our programs thrive and our community flourishes. Your contributions span countless hours of selfless service, whether it's helping at Aunt Bette's Community Pantry, coaching a sport, mentoring students, assisting with campus events, tending Gwen's Garden, or supporting our educational initiatives.
It is often said that it takes a village, and at St. Philip's, we are blessed to have a village of compassionate individuals who believe in our mission. To every volunteer who has given their time, talent and treasure, please know that your efforts are deeply appreciated. Together, we are building a brighter future. Thank you for your generosity!
PARKLAND HOSPITAL
Since April 2024, a dedicated group of Parkland Hospital volunteers has been faithfully giving their time and energy to support Aunt Bette's Community Pantry. Twice a month on Tuesdays, these volunteers step away from their demanding roles in healthcare to assist in providing food and resources to those in need. We are grateful their commitment to service extends beyond the walls of the hospital and into the heart of the
community. At the pantry, they help with organizing donations, stocking shelves, and ensuring that every guest receives the care and dignity they deserve as they shop. The partnership between Parkland Hospital and Aunt Bette's Community Pantry highlights the power of collaboration in addressing food insecurity and fostering community well-being. The volunteers bring not only their skills but also their compassion, creating a welcoming environment that reflects the mission of both organizations.
LEARFIELD SHARE THE CARE DAY
First time volunteers are near to our hearts! When people learn of the mission of St. Philip’s and make a conscious decision to get involved, they become agents of change. Our friends at SMU introduced us to a mighty group of servants from Learfield. Their first visit to Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry was unforgettable.
We are grateful for this connection and for the passion and joy with which they served. It is moments like these that inspire us to extend an open invitation to others: discover St. Philip’s, experience our mission, and make a difference.
We believe that everyone has something invaluable to contribute—time, talent, and treasure. It is our hope that as more people become familiar with the transformative work happening here, they will be inspired to join us in building a stronger, more compassionate community. Thank you, Learfield, for answering the call and becoming part of our unstoppable mission.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED NORTH TEXAS GIVING DAY
Over 250 donors accepted the mission to support our education and community services and successfully accomplished the mission with over $118,000 raised on North Texas Giving Day. Piggybacking on the 2024-25 school year theme of, “Mission Unstoppable”, our St. Philip’s family united with dedicated friends and supporters across Dallas to ensure deserving students receive a St. Philip’s education, families are fed through Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry, and youth from across the community can participate in team athletics and learn lifelong lessons of teamwork, goal setting, and perseverance. Our community demonstrated its dedication to our mission and our staff nearly doubled their giving from last year. We are truly grateful the Holy Spirit touched so many friends and encouraged their gifts to St. Philip’s.
BINGO & BITES
What an unforgettable evening! Friends of St. Philip’s delivered another night of fun and purpose, all in support of our mission. The event, expertly co-chaired by Chris Berry and Mari Epperson, brought together families, alumni, and friends for 10 rounds of lively bingo games, raffle prizes, delicious bites and heartwarming moments of inspiration.
The night was made even more special by Jesse Hernandez, M.D., a proud St. Philip’s alum, who shared his powerful testimony about the profound impact Dr. Terry Flowers has had on his life. As we celebrated Dr. Flowers’ 40 years of service, his enduring legacy of leadership was a source of inspiration for all.
Alumna, Eden Murrell made a special appearance via video to share her testimony about being part of the inaugural 8th grade trip to Ghana. She recalled how her interactions have forever impacted her life. Her message encouraged generous support of the 2025 eighth Grade Trip to Ghana.
We are deeply grateful to The Good Foundation, our Honorary Chair, for their continued generous support, as well as the many donors and sponsors who made the evening possible. A special thank you to our major table sponsors including Rebecca and Rob Landin, St. Michael & All Angels Church, Steve and Renee Comen, and Rozene Pride.
DJ LC kept the energy high with fantastic music, setting the perfect tone for a lively celebration. PARENT UNIVERSITY
Through educational workshops led by Shelton School, families were taught methods to facilitate their child’s academic success based on how they learn. We believe that learning also happens beyond the walls of the classroom, and we partner with parents to ensure that each scholar is equipped, challenged and celebrated. Hands-on sessions provided practical strategies for student support and personal development. The topics ranged from learning styles to homework techniques and each participant left with tools and insights to improve their student’s learning experience. We extend our gratitude to the Shelton School team for their expertise and commitment to empower our families. Events like Parent University reinforce the strong partnership between St. Philip’s, our families, and educational leaders, ensuring that we continue to nurture lifelong learners and leaders.
HOMECOMING 2024
The tradition continues! This year, the festivities on the field included exciting football games, snow cones, fresh fish plates, and a photo booth. We also hosted a Day of Service, where participants spent time beautifying our campus and the surrounding area. The day’s success was made possible by our amazing vendors and volunteers. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this year’s Homecoming unforgettable—we can’t wait to celebrate with you again next year!
25 TH DESTINY AWARD LUNCHEON
SAVE THE DATE
The Destiny Award Luncheon is the signature fundraising event benefiting St. Philip’s School and Community Center. This year, the event celebrates 25 years of honoring Dallas’ altruistic history and of bringing dynamic speakers to engage St. Philip’s diverse stakeholders and key community members.
At the luncheon, attendees will enjoy a special conversation with the Parrish Family Destiny Award Speaker, NBA legend Julius "Dr. J" Erving. Our moderater will be three-time Olympic gold medalist and icon Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Making it a truly inspirational occasion. The Mona and Dave Munson Humanitarian Award will be presented to Rozene Pride to honor her and the late Charley Pride for their work to significantly bridge diverse communities. The award reflects the belief in the oneness of humankind and the shared destiny that links us all.
St. Philip’s continues to shine as a beacon of light, hope, and transformation in South Dallas. It provides exceptional education for children from PK to 8th grade, with a remarkable track record of success: 100% of St. Philip’s alumni graduate from high school, and 95% go on to college, far surpassing the local neighborhood’s high school graduation rate of 48% and college attendance rate of 4%. Notably, in May 2024, St. Philip’s graduated its first class of 8th graders. These 13 scholars earned over $300,000 in high school scholarships, a testament to the school’s academic excellence. Also in September 2024, St. Philip's was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School, an extraordinary national achievement that underscores the school's dedication to educational quality and innovation.
Funds raised through the Destiny Award Luncheon directly support St. Philip’s community operations. Each year, St. Philips serves over 8,000 neighbors, providing critical services such as senior transportation, housing, hunger relief through Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry, and enrichment programs for children and families. These efforts, combined with St. Philip’s founding athletics programs serving over 1,500 children, ensure that the school continues to be a pillar of support and growth in the community.
St. Philip’s is truly the miracle at 1600 Pennsylvania.

WELCOMING NEW BOARD PRESIDENTS
As I write these words, Thanksgiving has just passed. Advent and Christmas are upon us. Each brings thoughts of gratitude, waiting, watching, and proclamation - words we are living at St. Philip's every day.
We are encouraged to look both inward and outward as we prepare for the joys of the holiday season.
In Thanksgiving, we take time to acknowledge and appreciate the blessings in our lives: our amazing faculty and staff, generous donors, caring volunteers, and friends and family in our community. We are incredibly grateful for the support and love we receive from each of you and recognize the abundance that surrounds us through your gifts of time, donations, and prayers.
As we transition into Advent and Christmas, the themes of waiting, watching, and proclamation take center stage. This season is a time of preparation and contemplation, where we reflect on the significance of hope and the promise of new beginnings happening in our community such as the much-anticipated construction of the Moody Performing and Fine Arts Center and the opening of Ruthie's Cafe on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. We are ever mindful of the signs of grace in our lives and strive to share that hope with others.
At St. Philip’s these themes are embodied throughout our community in the variety of activities and gatherings that foster connection and support. Through youth sports, Aunt Bette's Community Pantry, Thanksgiving meals, the Christmas store, daily chapel services, and so much more, we celebrate the spirit of the season.
As we navigate this time together, we embrace the opportunity to express our gratitude to our many supporters, to wait with hopeful expectation for God's continuing plan, and to proclaim the joy and love that comes from being part of His caring community. May this season be filled with meaningful moments and a deep sense of connection to one another and the larger part in God's purpose we share.
With gratitude,
Paula Mitchell Board of Trustees
UNITED IN COMMITMENT TO ST. PHILIP'S MISSION
If you ask any parent, being on site at St. Philips School and Community Center is refreshing. Every chapel service, project, piece of art on the wall or student performance is rooted in purpose. The daily work of the faculty and staff is intentional and does not go unnoticed. Our students and community are truly experiencing Mission Unstoppable.
This year has been remarkable from the start for the Parent School Association (PSA). One of the most unique features of our group is that everyone is included. Each parent with a child enrolled automatically receives entrance into this unique group. Overwhelming participation is evident when you see parents volunteering at our events, helping on the school grounds, or in their children’s classrooms. We are truly a team and united in our commitment, hopes and dreams for the next generation.
The PSA has deployed several impactful initiatives as we work to fulfil our critical objective of serving our teachers in a meaningful way this year. To mention a few of these, we kicked off crowning Teachers of the Month, honoring classroom wish lists and setting up classrooms for back to school. I am personally impacted and rewarded each time a teacher thanks us for the work we are doing on campus and mentions how it is additive to their day in the classroom. The parent body is also committed to reaching beyond the school borders and have committed hours we will fulfill in Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry by the end of the school year. I think I speak for all members in the PSA when I say there is no place as special as St. Philip's School and Community Center. We are grateful to be a part of this village and will continue to be of service.
Ayanna Coleman 2024-2026 PSA President

We have been made ready for growth. With dignity, faith, and sacrifice, we have been positioned to increase programming and expand our campus next year.
The work has been invested by teachers, parents, staff, and supporters who have been committed to preparing the field for our children. Because of those selfless acts of compassion and commitment to academic, social, and spiritual excellence, we continue to impact lives.
Keep this magazine, and in 10 years or later when you open it, I pray you'll understand the dignity in tilling the field and remember your God given responsibilities to till the land and allow others to experience what you have.

WAYS TO SUPPORT ST. PHILIP’S: TIME, TALENT, & TREASURE
St. Philip’s has thrived through the tremendous support provided by a dedicated community of alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends. For decades, St. Philip’s School and Community Center has embodied excellence, in large part because our community has given generously of its time, talents, and treasures. There are many creative opportunities to make a contribution to the important work of St. Philip’s School and Community Center.
PLANNED GIVING – You can make a loving impact for future Saints and for our community by including St. Philip’s in your will.
LIFE INSURANCE - You could name St. Philip’s as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy. Some friends have gifted older policies to St. Philip’s. Upon transfer, these friends make gifts to maintain the policy.
QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION - Persons over age 73 must take a required minimum distribution (RMD) from their employer-sponsored retirement plans, such as 401(k), 403(b), and 457(b) plans. These distributions are fully taxable to the recipient, BUT, by authorizing the custodian of your retirement plan to direct the RMD amount to St. Philip’s, you satisfy IRS requirements and you owe no tax on the distribution.
GIFT OF APPRECIATED SECURITIES – When you make a gift of appreciated securities to St. Philip’s, you are investing in the future of South Dallas AND receiving a charitable deduction equal to 100% of the fair-market value AND bypassing capital gains taxes. This method of giving is a proven winner for the donor and for St. Philip’s.
Contact John Gilchrist, CFRE, FAHP, Chief Philanthropy Officer at jgilchrist@stphilips.com or 214-421-5221, ext. 238, for more information. St. Philip’s does not provide professional advice and this information is not provided as or intended to serve as professional advice. St. Philip’s can share general information to your professional advisor.
CONSIDER EMPLOYEE CORPORATE GIVING – St. Philip’s receives designated funds through the United Way (#180), the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), and State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC).
DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT WITH MATCHING GIFTS – Many employers match gifts by current and retired employees. This is an easy way to double your monetary gift or place a monetary value of your volunteer time to St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Contact the Human Resources office of your employer for the form to match your gift to St. Philip’s.
SHOP AND SHARE – St. Philip’s benefits from your shopping with Kroger, Tom Thumb, Target and GoodSearch.
THE GIFT OF TIME – From landscaping to mentoring, there are many ways that you or your business/employers can become part of making an impact in the South Dallas area. We need your hands, too.
DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT TO ST. PHILIP’S WITH A MATCHING GIFT!
After making a contribution, confirm if your company or organization provides matching donations. Follow the steps to have your gift matched and join other donors who have doubled, and in some cases tripled their impact on the St. Philip’s ministry.
