God’s calling is for us to do good. His faithfulness yields the getting better that is manifested daily at the ministry of St. Philip’s.

Sacrifical parents, dedicated and committed faculty and staff, along with donors and volunteers, all doing good, equal better outcomes.

DOING GOOD AND GETTING BETTER Occasionally, when I’m asked how I am doing, my response is, “I’m doing good and getting better.” Frequently, that response produces an unintended inquiry about my health. When I say, “I’m doing good and getting better,” I am not referencing physical, mental, emotional, financial, or even spiritual well-being. Doing good refers to my actively seeking to wake up every morning to do good. And as a result, I'm getting better, because better seems to come my way even in distressed times.

Doing good yields improvement, advances excellence, and surrenders obedience to God’s word, His will, and His way. In many ways, DGGB exemplifies the journey of St. Philip’s from a church to a school and center of community. Our mighty impact on these anointed soils has yielded incredible academic results against significant odds. The services provided to our South Dallas neighbors have empowered hundreds of

A WORD FROM THE GEORGE T. LEE, JR. PRINCIPAL Psalm 1:3 gives the imagery of a thriving tree.

It thrives because it has been firmly planted, bears fruit, and prospers. In the 2023-2024 school year, the St. Philip's Village is determined to be rooted and grounded in our Faith. As our creed states, success is our right and failure our option. Our indestructible Faith, along with commitment to excellence and service, propels us toward prospering, thriving, and succeeding.

We know that the foundation of a thriving school begins with an impenetrable relationship with God and our community.

Exciting growth and expansion are underway at St. Philip's. Our vibrant community is flourishing, overflowing with energy and enthusiasm. Since 2015, our enrollment has grown by almost 50 percent, and our family retention has increased by nearly 20 percent . We are excited to have over 280 students enrolled this school year, with 45 faculty dedicated to student success in and out of the classroom. We are trending towards even greater enrollment numbers for the years to come.

Included in our growth is the addition of our new Early Childhood Director, Sheila Abio.

She is a passionate educational administrator with over 15 years of experience. As a leader, her strength, genuine affection for preschool children, and unwavering dedication to the St. Philip's mission create the optimal blend of qualities to guide our youngest learners toward achieving their very best.

He will be like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers. Psalms 1:3

The expansion to a comprehensive middle school program has allowed the inclusion of 7th and 8th-grade Athletics, 8th-grade Writing, as well as College Board Pre-AP Math and English I. This enhancement provides our students with the additional academic rigor essential for their preparation for high school. With the success of our first High School Fair, our students are prepared to excel and let their light shine no matter where their life after St. Philip's leads them. The class of 2024 is a shining example of our graduate profile tenets. They are intellectually driven, Christ-centered, servant leaders who are confident, and culturally aware!

THRIVING TOGETHER A JOYFUL PLACE TO START Greetings from the happiest place on earth, St. Philip’s EC program! Many of our students are experiencing their first time in a school setting and I am so proud of how they come to school each day, eager to learn and to develop important foundational skills.

Every day is special at St. Philip’s, beginning with Chapel. Through prayer, song, and God’s infinite love, our students, staff, and community thrive in every way! We are instilling a foundation for our youngest children through the belief that with God, we can do hard things and achieve great success. Students are learning essential skills in all content areas that will prepare them for a rigorous academic learning path at St. Philip’s and in life.

Our early childhood teachers are among the best I have had the pleasure of working with throughout my career. Their love, compassion and joy for their students is truly heartwarming. They are masters of differentiated instruction and cater experiences to meet each child where they are.

My life has been blessed by the St. Philip’s community, and I am immensely grateful and honored to lead and inspire this very special department. We have so much to look forward to and we welcome your presence and participation always!

A MESSAGE TO PARENTS Parents often ask what they can do to help their children thrive. As George Santayana says, “A child educated only at school is an uneducated child.” In addition to helping your child with homework and preparation for tests, there are other ways to enrich their educational experience.

When children are born, parents meet their physical and emotional needs and begin teaching them skills that will lead to their lifelong success. As they grow, remember to take every opportunity to increase their knowledge.

The Middle School Expansion... what a fantastic journey! The middle school program passionately embodies the school's theme, "Thriving Together," fostering a dynamic community of growth and collaboration. The students are guided by dedicated educators who cultivate an environment that values inclusivity, empathy, and resilience. Through engaging activities and projects, they foster a culture of mutual support, where rigorous learning is an opportunity to strengthen and stretch students. Encouraging teamwork, the middle school program instills the values of respect, integrity, and perseverance, nurturing a sense of belonging and collective accomplishment. Empowering each student's unique potential, the middle school program inspires a shared commitment to excellence, fostering a vibrant culture of cooperation and achievement.

The new teachers have seamlessly integrated into the middle school team, bringing fresh perspectives and innovative teaching methods to enrich the learning experiences for the students.

They also embrace the school's "Thriving Together" ethos, quickly becoming integral members cultivating a cohesive and supportive learning community.

As we look forward, we are excited for the spring as we will graduate our first first 8th grade class.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ARTS The Fine Arts and Specials Department has begun the school year fresh, new, and thriving for sure! We are so excited to have Jorge Guevara teaching 1st-8th grade Spanish, Amber Harris teaching 1st-5th grade Art, Amanda Woodard teaching Middle School Art, and Casey Bruce teaching 1st-8th grade PE. This year our aim is to maintain the caliber of excellence our program is known for, while also contending with a greater student population. This means an expansion of our programming with shrinking space. We are so thankful for the creative thinking that has led us to partner with the South Dallas Cultural Center for auxiliary classroom space for our Technical Theater class. This collaboration has allowed the students to have access to a black box theater and learn the art of production with the expertise of teaching artists provided by Broadway Dallas! The students have been completely enthralled in the world of theater behind the curtain!

It is partnerships such as these where we see the greatest evidence of thriving beyond our walls. As we patiently anticipate the groundbreaking of our performing arts center, it is our mission to ensure the excellence of our programming never stops. This year we found that community partners are a vital key to our success. We welcome all of the many hands that make the work light! Interested in becoming involved? MIDDLE SCHOOLERS NAVIGATE BIBLE TEACHINGS At St. Philip’s, a transformative exploration into the sacred pages of the Bible unfold for our middle schoolers. Initiated in 2022 with a group of curious 7th graders, the Middle School Bible Class has become a dynamic space for spiritual growth, intellectual exploration, and personal development.

This expedition through the Bible begins with Genesis, weaving through the tapestry of biblical narratives, unraveling tales of creation and purpose. Today, the 8th graders are immersed in the profound teachings of the Book of Romans. Christopher Francois, the guiding force behind this academic and spiritual odyssey, notes the significant progress in the students' understanding of scripture.

"It starts with me leading," says Mr. Francois, "then as they gain more information, they're able to share more and lead more in discussions. The growth is evident in their homilies." These studentpresented reflections in Chapel showcase not only their biblical knowledge but also their evolving depth of understanding and connection with the scriptures.

Unlike conventional classes, the Middle School Bible Class thrives in a relaxed structure where grades are not the focal point. Mr. Francois believes in fostering an environment where students can freely explore the Bible and compare different versions, allowing them to connect with the text on a personal level.

In Mr. Francois' words, "The 8th graders especially are showing more depth in their understanding of the scripture. Not just surface-level insights but a profound exploration of what the verses truly convey."

Mr. Francois, a former youth pastor, brings a unique blend of spiritual insight and educational expertise to the class. "Jesus led his ministry with compassion and love," he emphasizes, "and it should be a note that we carry as Christians that it’s not our responsibility to judge."

The class delves into the profound idea that God's love is universal, not confined to select individuals.

"Our role is to love and show what love can look like," Mr. Francois expresses, "as well as what love 12

AT A GLANCE: Christian Education doesn’t look like." Through these teachings, students grasp the impactful connection between their actions, the portrayal of Christ's love, and the curiosity others might develop about the Christian faith.

Mr. Francois wears multiple hats at St. Philip's, serving as the 5th and 6th grade math teacher and the visionary guide of the 7th and 8th grade Bible class. With a decade of experience in education and a background from the Dallas Theological Seminary, his passion for holistic student development shines through in every lesson.

VOICES OF THE JOURNEY: STUDENT TESTIMONIES Jonathan Lax, an 8th grade student, reflects on the evolution of the class, which he says reminds him of his youth group at church. "At first, we were studying history and going over Genesis, but now we're doing Romans and just learning about faith and progressing in our Christian lives."

Eden Murrell, another 8th grade student, draws a distinction, "In church, you have a sermon and go over every book of the Bible. In this class, you can take more time on one book of the Bible specifically."

In this vibrant academic and spiritual sanctuary, the Middle School Bible Class at St. Philip's becomes a testament to the synergy of faith, knowledge, and personal growth. It's not merely a class; it's an expedition into the soul of the scriptures, shaping young minds into thoughtful, compassionate, and informed individuals on their Christian journey.

EMPOWERING TOMORROW'S LEADERS In a dynamic new initiative, Guys Night Out, 1st through 12th grade boys from our school and broader community are embarking on a transformative journey, guided by the wisdom of men from Dallas Professionals. This collaborative effort aims to cultivate a profound understanding of manhood, nurturing the next generation of community influencers.

Dallas Professionals, a collective of accomplished Black men, passionately engages in community outreach to connect with and positively influence youth. Drawing from their diverse expertise across various industries, these professionals serve as invaluable role models for our scholars. Their impact extends far beyond our institution and reaches into low-income areas where the presence of successful Black mentors proves to be transformative.

Steven Harris, a member of Dallas Professionals and former Saints athlete, says their mission is to inspire mankind through good deeds. They strive to be an example of men that work, care for their families, and create time to use their skills for the enrichment of their communities.

Earlier this year, Steven and another member selected St. Philip’s as the recipient of their services with the intention of building a multi-year legacy. He expressed his joy in partnering with Dr. Flowers to bring their group to our campus. “This school did so much for my life. When I mentioned coming here, it was just like coming home.”

Through hands-on activities and conversations, the boys gain a holistic understanding of leadership rooted in humility, compassion, and service to others. Thank you to the men who have chosen to dedicate their time to pour into the youth! We’re excited to now offer boy-focused programming that is compatible with the Girls Night Out program we’ve had for years.

CELEBRATING LIFE: A SENIOR TRADITION In a celebration of life and a testament to the vibrant spirit of our senior community, the Senior Soirée unfolded as a delightful event that left a mark on the hearts of all attendees. Against the backdrop of shared laughter, dance, and genuine fellowship, our cherished senior members gathered to create a day filled with joy and lasting memories.

As the music played and the dance floor became a stage for the lively spirits, the event became a celebration of the beauty found in every phase of life. The occasion was not just about dance; it was a manifestation of the strong bonds that have been woven over the years within our senior community.

With over 50 attendees, friendships were rekindled, and new connections were formed. As we reflect, let it serve as an inspiration to us all—a reminder that, regardless of our age, every day is a chance to celebrate life, to dance, and to embrace the precious moments that create the fabric of our shared journey. It was a healthy and delicious start to our action-packed days; and students got hands-on experience, helping to package and distribute the items.

by Patrick Flanagan and his buddies inspired our scholars to unleash their imagination and build masterpieces.

From towering structures to intricate designs, the Lego camps were a hit among our budding architects.

Sports Clinics that Scored Big: Lacrosse and volleyball players were in for a treat as they honed their skills and gained confidence during clinics led by seasoned pros. The energy on the field and the courts was contagious, creating an environment where young athletes thrived. We look forward to hosting additional sports camps throughout the year.

This Christian sports camp empowered our youth and instilled leadership qualities that have the potential to revolutionize their communities.

Camp Champions Bound: Thanks to a generous discount, we proudly sent ten St. Philip's students to Camp Champions, a premier overnight summer camp in Texas. Nestled in the heart of nature, Camp Champions offered a two-week escape from the ordinary—an opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in a world of indoor and outdoor adventures, free from electronic distractions.

We extend our gratitude to everyone who contributed to another successful St. Philip's Summer. It's moments like these that define the essence of community.

CELEBRATING A WIN FOR SOUTH DALLAS: $800,000 EPA GRANT FUELS TRANSFORMATION

On August 31st, a wave of excitement and gratitude swept over St. Philip’s School and Community Center in South Dallas as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), joined

by Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) and Dallas Councilmember Adam Bazaldua, announced a game-changing grant of $800,000.

This grant, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law as part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda, is earmarked for the assessment and cleanup of brownfield sites in the South Dallas Forest District. Why is this such a big deal? Well, it's not just about cleaning up spaces; it's about fostering growth, community vitality, and breaking free from decades of environmental injustice.

Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) expressed her gratitude, highlighting the significance of addressing historical disparities: "For too long, affluent, white communities have been kept clean at the expense of Black neighborhoods.

Councilmember Adam Bazaldua (District 7) shared his excitement for the positive impact this grant will have on improving the neighborhood and bridging historical gaps: "I look forward to seeing how this grant will be used to help revitalize Sunny South Dallas."

This grant builds on St. Philip’s previous successes in assessing, cleaning up, and revitalizing surrounding sites, including the transformation of the WeCreation Center from a former nightclub contaminated by dry-cleaner facilities. The newest grant will fund more environmental assessments and plans for cleanup and reuse of other sites, including retail buildings on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, aiming to boost economic development and provide opportunities for small businesses.

The historic $1.5 billion boost from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is propelling EPA’s Brownfield Program to make a significant impact in historically overburdened communities.

This program aligns with President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative, directing benefits to disadvantaged communities.

UNITY IN ACTION

COMMUNITY CLEANUP At our Fall Community Cleanup, a team of 50 volunteers joined forces to turn an ordinary Saturday into a day of impactful transformation. Teams from St. Andrew Methodist Church and Top Ladies of Distinction took charge of two sites, channeling their energy into revitalizing spaces that needed a touch of care.

One heartwarming highlight was the collective effort to rejuvenate the property of a longtime neighbor. Overgrown and in need of attention, his space was transformed into a source of pride with the hard work of our volunteers. Thanksgiving WITH A TWIST

This year has been unique in many ways! In lieu of our traditional Thanksgiving Feast, we adopted a drive-thru style event, inviting pantry clients and members of the community to join us at Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry. On the Monday before Thanksgiving, we came together to serve in an impactful way. Volunteers contributed by cooking, packaging meals, assisting shoppers, writing notes and more.

The numbers tell a story of compassion in action: a total of 320 drive-thru plates were served, 40 clients shopped during their bi-weekly appointment, and over 200 emergency bundles were distributed, offering vital support to those facing unexpected challenges.

AUNT BETTE’S CO M M U N I T Y PA N T RY IS GROWING Amidst a spirit of compassion and community, St. Philip’s School and Community Center proudly unveiled the transformation of Aunt Bette’s Community Food Pantry in a heartwarming rededication ceremony on November 7. The newly renovated facility stands as a beacon of hope, and is poised to extend its reach and serve even more families in the neighborhood.

The occasion spotlighted the essential contributions of families, foundations, partners, and dedicated volunteers who form the backbone of the pantry. The Rev. Paul Rasmussen, senior pastor at Highland Park United Methodist Church, opened the ceremony with an invocation that acknowledged the efforts of many organizations that made the pantry possible. Crucial to the expansion was HPUMC’s contribution, the largest gift from a church that St. Philip’s has received to date.

The larger facility at 3202 Holmes Street, situated across the street from its predecessor, comes at a crucial time of escalating food prices and heightened demand for nutritional support, as emphasized by Trisha Cunningham, CEO of the North Texas Food Bank, a key partner of the pantry. The interior of the new building resembles a grocery store in an effort to restore dignity to those who are vulnerable to hunger.

FEATURE STORY Guiding the celebratory event was Alfreda Norman, a friend and foundation board member.

Nancy E. Perot, former WE BELIEVE campaign co-chair, joined Bill Addy of The Addy Foundation in sharing insightful remarks about the profound impact of Aunt Bette and the collaborative space within the new building. The Addy Foundation’s generous contribution helped establish a dedicated collaboration room which provides clients with a space to engage with partner organizations offering expanded community services. The pantry, bearing the name of the late Margaret “Bette” Perot, stands as a tribute to her tireless advocacy against hunger. It was commemorated with the renaming in 2019 following a significant $2 million gift from the Perot family to endow the community pantry and sustain its future. The hope was that the gift would be leveraged to secure matching gifts and funds to support its needs today, which it has been successful in doing.

The updated space now features a "nudge kitchen," inspired by similar concepts in neighboring pantries, designed to create dishes using vegetables and other ingredients that may often be overlooked on the shelves. The aim is to encourage individuals to integrate these items into their meals. The nudge kitchen is a tribute to dedicated volunteer Peggy Anshutz.

FEATURE STORY What we know now as a client-choice food pantry was once a small closet on the school's campus in 1988 to help families and children experiencing food insecurity. In 2015, the pantry moved to a brick-and-mortar store near the school, which served more than 600 families each year. Currently, it serves over 850 families annually. The expansion has allowed the pantry to serve another zip code, bringing the total to three, and has extended its reach to an additional 103 families.

The rededication concluded with the Rev. Dr. Mark Anshutz, retired rector of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, offering a blessing for the new building, the individuals it serves, and the dedicated staff and friends who support its mission.

In a dynamic era of transformation, South Dallas and the St. Philip's community are evolving right before our eyes. We are brimming with energy and enthusiasm.

Coach Tosheia Smith, at the helm of this spirited ensemble, expresses immense pride in retaining cheerleaders over the years, with some having embarked on their cheering journey at the age of four and now gracing the 12U team.

The true power behind this year's success lies in the fantastic team effort. CURATORIAL CANVAS: ALUMNA EXPLORES THE ART OF CURATION In the enchanting world of art curation, Class of 2009 alumna Clarke Brown is redefining the boundaries of what's possible in the realm of art and culture. Clarke graduated from Plano West Senior High School and matriculated through Spelman College where she received a Bachelor of Arts in History in 2019. This foundation set the stage for her remarkable academic pursuits as she went on to pursue her graduate studies at New York University, receiving a master’s degree in museum studies.

Most recently, she enriched her impressive educational background by completing a curatorial fellowship at the LSU Museum of Art in Baton Rouge, LA. Her inspiring path was sparked by her passion for researching the intersections between African American history, art, and culture. Initially her journey began by getting involved with the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and joining the Curatorial Studies Program, which aims to prepare more students of color to enter museum professions.

She expressed her views on the significance of increasing diversity within the museum profession. “As a young person I didn't frequent art museums, and I wasn't aware that working in an institution could be a career option.

Being a museum professional sparked my interest because I learned that art can present various perspectives that are visually engaging.”

Clarke's curatorial practice focuses on cultivating experiences by sharing histories to bridge societal gaps, raise awareness, and promote dialogue across various disciplines through modern and contemporary art.

“Diversity within the profession is essential to ensuring that all perspectives and communities are represented in collections, exhibitions, and programming practices.”

What Clarke loves most about her career is the opportunity to meet people from all backgrounds who challenge and encourage new ways of thinking through art. Recognizing the profession is making progress, she notes the importance of ensuring the accessibility to educational training and the significance in creating diverse environments within institutions to reflect their immediate communities.

Looking back on her journey, Clarke credits St. Philip's for instilling values that have driven her throughout her life. The belief in dreaming big, giving one's best, giving back to the community, and never stopping the pursuit of knowledge have been guiding stars in her curatorial voyage. In the future she plans to contiinue her work as a curator, with the possibility of returning to graduate school to pursue a PhD in Art History.

Today, Clarke holds the position of Art Museum Curator at the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum in Atlanta, Georgia. Her role is a testament and an inspiring example of how art can bridge divides, inspire dialogue, and showcase the rich tapestry of our history and culture.

Kudos goes to alumna Sydney Thomas, Class of 2019, for being chosen to participate in the 2023 Grammy Camp this past summer. GRAMMY Camp is a seven-day non-residential music industry program for high school students interested in careers in music. It takes place every July on the campus of the University of Southern California. Students from across the country apply for one of eight career tracks. GRAMMY Camp faculty of music professionals, as well as guest professionals, provide valuable insights which give campers the best chance at achieving success in their chosen career. Sydney auditioned for the vocal performance track and was one of the eight vocalists selected nationwide to attend Grammy Camp in Los Angeles.

Alumnus and chef Sebastian White was featured on the Friendsgiving episode of Chopped on the Food Network. On the November 7, 2023, airing, he teamed up with a chef friend to compete. The episode’s theme centered around the trendy tradition of hosting a Friendsgiving meal. Four teams of best buddies compete to make a Thanksgiving feast. Cooperation was key, as good pals set out to show that their bonds can withstand the pressure that comes from one of the toughest cooking competitions around. Catch him on Season 56, Episode 8.

CROWNING GLORY: ST. PHILIP'S ALUMNA BECOMES HBCU QUEEN Hampton University crowned alumna Hannah Selders, Class of 2016, as the 66th Miss Hampton University.

Remarkably, she not only stood out as the sole contestant to receive four trophies but also secured multiple first place awards in individual categories. Particularly noteworthy was her exceptional performance in the talent category where she showcased her violin skills.

Next year, she will complete her final year in a 5-year MBA program at Hampton University, and she will graduate with two business degrees. She is currently a Toyota PUSH Fellow and has interned with the company every summer during her undergraduate experience. She plans to prioritize employment offers from Toyota as she considers the other offers others that have come her way.

Hannah’s long-term career goal is to fuse her love for fashion with her skillset and experience in business marketing and brand management to launch a career supporting high-end international fashion brands.

I’m very honored to represent my school and fellow students, the Hampton community, and young college women across the world. I'm also very proud to represent my family and village and acknowledge I would not be here without them.”

St. Philip's is where my confidence was nurtured, my leadership skills were enhanced, my musical talent was celebrated, and some of my best friendships were developed. St. Philip's conditioned me to be a leader by giving me real-life practice at a very young age, by putting me on a stage and giving me the tools necessary to speak, perform, and compete.

She recognizes that many people view crowns as symbols of status, authority, or perfection, “I’m determined to wear this crown as a representation of determination, faith, community, love, and hard work.” The platform she’s chosen for her reign is L.E.A.D., an acronym she developed to encourage others to lead by Loving, Encouraging, and Accepting Differences. “As a young woman who has successfully tackled school, classical music, and life, with a learning difference, serving in this role as the 66th Miss Hampton University gives me the opportunity to LEAD by example in educating others and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, collective work, and commitment to serving my community.”

However, this school year witnessed a deeper level of involvement. Courtney Weppner, Sendero's dedicated volunteer coordinator, orchestrated a range of initiatives that spanned both campus and community. The volunteers from Sendero brought their energy to Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry, where they played an instrumental role in stocking shelves and assisting clients with their shopping.

Simultaneously, on campus, they orchestrated the organization of our gymnasium and contributed to the enhancement of various software and technologies.

Weppner, reflecting on her role as an Analyst at Sendero, shared, "I initially joined Sendero Cares, our employee-driven philanthropy committee, because I was interested in learning more about local service opportunities and spending time giving back to the Dallas community."

Sendero's collaboration with St. Philip's was sparked by the vision of Margertree Holmes, Chief Community Advancement Officer, aligning with Sendero's commitment to being a force for good in the community. This alliance has blossomed into a multi-faceted partnership, with Sendero not only completing two Rock projects but also actively participating in various volunteer events at St. Philip's.

ERNST & YOUNG What started out as a simple volunteer day eight years ago has blossomed into an endearing partnership with a dynamic group of employees from Ernst & Young. EY Connect Days are quarterly days of service, when all EY people in the Americas can volunteer together to support EY Ripples, their global corporate responsibility program. Joined by employees from Toyota, this wonderful group emerged on our campus for EY Connect Day on Friday, November 3, 2023, with 120 volunteers to again create lasting impact in and around our campus. Tasked with some major sweat equity projects, this amazing group, led by Kevin Muskat, current parent Emoni Wicks, Sukky Agbomeji, Darwin Johnson and Anthony Watkins, accomplished the grand undertaking of prepping our campus and the new food pantry location for the rededication event that took place on Tuesday, November 7th. From planting flowers, mowing, weed eating, staging, stocking, and organizing, there wasn’t a task left undone. There’s no denying that EY and Toyota are true forces for change in the Dallas community. We are ever so thankful for their continued commitment to St. Philip’s mission and vision.

The recent "Shred Day" during our Homecoming weekend was a testament to their dedication.

LENNOX Led by friend and former board member, Monica Brown, a group of Lennox volunteers made sure we started the new school year thriving by assisting our new teachers in preparing their classrooms for the first day of school. With boundless enthusiasm and dedication, these volunteers donated their time and expertise to help set up an engaging and welcoming learning environment for six of our new teachers. They organized supplies, arranged desks, and decorated bulletin boards. Their support eased the stress and workload for new teachers, ensuring that students had a positive and well-prepared space for their first day of school, setting the stage for a successful academic year. Lennox isn’t a new friend to St. Philip’s. They have been a Destiny Award Luncheon sponsor since 2018. We are grateful to Lennox for their compassionate effort and continued support.

NATIONAL CHARITIES LEAGUE A vibrant group of over 170 young ladies and their mothers came together on a Saturday in August to give our campus some extra TLC. With boundless energy and unwavering dedication, these dynamic duos rolled up their sleeves and dived headfirst into action. Their tasks were as diverse as their smiles were radiant. From crafting essential cultivation packets to cleaning windows in a heavily frequented school corridor, this team did it all. They also organized various spaces and tackled the significant undertaking of assembling a large mailing project with grace and efficiency. Their commitment and spirit truly embody the values of community and service.

Thanks to the incredible efforts of these amazing young ladies and their devoted moms for turning a simple act of kindness into an extraordinary labor of love.

EMPIRE ROOFING & UNITED MECHANICAL Empire Roofing has once again demonstrated its steadfast commitment to community development by spearheading the replacement of the roof on a recently acquired property along Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. This building serves as a vital space for a ministry that hosts daily addiction recovery group meetings. The urgency of this project was underscored by the deteriorating condition of the roof, plagued by significant water pooling, making it structurally unsafe.

In an honorable display of corporate responsibility, Empire Roofing's Matt Kelley stepped up to the plate, ensuring the safety and longevity of this essential community asset. Recognizing the broader impact of their efforts, United Mechanical, under the guidance of David Osborn, has graciously contributed their time, materials, and services to install a critical HVAC system. This joint initiative addresses not only the immediate structural concerns but also enhances the overall functionality and comfort of the space.

HOLLYE FISK (1946 – 2023) It is with great sympathy that we express our heartfelt condolences to the Fisk family on the passing of beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Hollye Fisk. After receiving his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin, he continued to law school at UT, receiving his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. Throughout his distinguished career, Hollye specialized in representing architects and engineers, earning the respect of his peers and the community. Hollye held a 50-year membership with the State Bar of Texas and actively participated in professional associations such as the Dallas Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the American Board of Trial Advocates. In 2017, he was among the first Texas lawyers to become Board Certified in Construction Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Hollye was also licensed to practice architecture, and he did so exclusively for several years prior to practicing law. He was very proud of his family and enjoyed traveling with his wife Susan and with their sons and their families, exploring historic sites, hiking, and navigating jeep trails. An avid scuba diver and underwater photographer, he and his sons enjoyed decades of adventures beneath the waves. Hollye was certified as a Master Scuba Diver having logged 592 dives. He was deeply involved at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, where he sang in the church choir for 40 years. He and his wife Susan, who currently serves on our board, became friends of St. Philip’s over two decades ago and continues to support our ministry in various capacities. We have been blessed by Hollye’s generosity and friendship for many decades.

OVERTON FULLYLOVE III (1971 – 2023) Our thoughts and condolences are with the Fullylove family as they mourn the loss of Overton Fullylove III, a former teacher and proud alumni parent of Lundynn Fullylove. Overton, a Dallas native and alumnus of The Episcopal School of Dallas and Austin College, had a passion for teaching and touched many lives. For five years, he passionately served at St. Philip’s, and excelled at various roles from ELAR to showcasing his creativity as a writer. He was cherished, known for his vibrant presence, and found joy in social gatherings, dancing, and wholeheartedly supporting his loved ones.

His beautiful spirit will be missed immensely.

DAVID GLEESON (1943 – 2023) We send our prayers to the Gleeson family on the passing of former founding director of the St. Philip’s Neighborhood Development Corporation, David Gleeson. A 1965 graduate of SMU, he also served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. While in the Reserves, he began his commercial real estate career of more than 55 years and later became a partner at Lincoln Property Co. David then formed Gleeson Realty Advisors, which was acquired by L&B Realty Advisors where he held an executive position for nineteen years until semi-retirement in 2014. He remained actively engaged in the realm of commercial real estate and its affiliated organizations. David's commitment to the community was extensive, exemplified by his service on the board of several organizations including the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce; SMU Cox Business School Advisory Board; USA Film Festival, as president; The Real Estate Council (TREC) Board; TREC Foundation and various TREC committees. He also volunteered as a CASA 58

(court-appointed special advocate) for children and served on the Dallas Affordable Housing Coalition. He and his wife were members of Highland Park Presbyterian Church. His ultimate source of happiness was embracing the role of father to his two cherished sons, Scott and Brent, and providing unwavering support for their endeavors and aspirations.

CECILIA HAYES (1930 – 2023) St. Philip’s wraps its loving arms around the family of Cecelia Hayes, a cherished former employee, volunteer and alumni grandparent to Leonard and Landon Medlock. Her educational journey began at the original B.F. Darrell School and continued at Booker T. Washington High School, where her passion for science and math shone brightly. With a Bachelor of Science degree from Jarvis Christian College in 1951, Cecilia devoted her life to being a faithful disciple, advocating for children, and serving as a respected histologist. For close to three decades, she stood as one of only three Black histologists in Dallas. She retired as manager of the histology department in 1992 from Methodist Hospital, following a 25 year plus tenure with Dr. J. L. Goforth, a downtown Dallas-based pathologist. Trained by Dr. Goforth, Cecilia's work as a histologist involved studying tissue structures to aid pathologists in diagnosing diseases, a field where her love for science and math found purpose. Upon retiring, she dedicated herself to volunteering at local elementary schools and at St. Philip’s School and Community Center, where her grandsons were students.

Her involvement in the business office led to a new chapter in Accounts Payable, allowing her to showcase her proficiency in mathematics. After over 20 years at St. Philip’s, Cecilia retired for the second time in 2015 on her 85th birthday. We are grateful for her service to this ministry and her loving spirit will be deeply missed.

DAVID MUNSON (1928 – 2023) St. Philip’s sends its sincerest condolences to the Munson family in the passing of their beloved patriarch and father, David. He was born and raised in Denison, Texas and graduated from Purdue with a degree in mechanical engineering. Known for his faith, dedication to education, and philanthropy, he served on the Board of Trustees at the Episcopal School of Dallas for nearly 50 years. Passionate about the impact of quality early childhood education, he co-founded Educational First Steps with likeminded individuals. Since 1990, EFS has been pivotal in elevating childcare centers in underserved North Texas communities into nationally accredited, high-quality early learning environments. By offering complimentary educational resources, teacher training, and enriching activities to over 100 daycare facilities and schools in the DFW area, Educational First Steps positively impacts the early education of more than 5,000 children annually. David and the Munson family have been generous donors and loyal friends of St. Philip’s for over 40 years. His legacy of generosity within the St. Philip’s community remains an enduring source of gratitude for his remarkable kindness.

ROBERT TRAIL (1951 – 2023) It is with deep sympathy that we extend our condolences to the Trail family on the passing of Robert Trail, a beloved husband, father, and alumni parent to Zoria Trail. Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, he was baptized into the Catholic faith. Following his high school graduation, Robert dedicated four years to the United States Navy. After his military service, he pursued a career as a Dallas firefighter, where he dedicated an impressive 32.5 years to the City of Dallas Fire-Rescue until his retirement in 2014 from Station 26.

Throughout his lengthy service, Robert actively participated in the Black Firefighters Association, leaving an indelible mark on the firefighting community. Robert's authentic spirit touched the lives of many, and he will be remembered for his vibrant personality, profound wisdom, and deep love for his family and friends. His generous heart and infectious laugh had the power to brighten any day. In celebrating the legacy of Robert Trail, we honor a man whose impact resonates far beyond his years of dedicated service.

St. Philip’s would also like to extend its deepest sympathies and condolences to Gernise and Dr. Terry J. Flowers in the passing of Mrs. Flowers’ father, Gerald Davis; to Margertree Holmes, Chief Community Advancement Officer and to Kaitlyn Holmes, Communications Supervisor, in the passing of their father and grandfather, Dwayne Carter; to trustee and alumna Cynammon Burns Allen, in the passing of her grandmother Eartha Sansom; to Foundation Board Chair, Marnese Barksdale Elder, in the passing of her mother, Faye Barksdale; to friend and supporter Elizabeth Saab in the passing of her sister.

I wish I had words sufficient to convey the depths of our appreciation, for you.

And so, without grand enough words, I pray…a lot…and my prayer is simple: That you may know how grateful we are for you. And that your days welcome you with some portion of the unspeakable joy that you bring to us.

Did you know that we prayed for you long before we even knew you by name. Yes, you…

Because without you our Ministry would be wanting. You bring something that no other can. You were a prayer waiting to be answered.

And so, if you are reading this, God has brought you nearer still, and that is an answered prayer.

If you are a volunteer, then you have shared your most precious and perishable gift with us – your time – and our appreciation is incalculable, as are our thanks for you in prayer.

If you are a donor, you have entrusted this organization with your resources without which we could not answer the calling of our community, and your faith in us is an answered prayer.

If you are one of our remarkable teachers, staff, or leaders, then the precious gift of your talents is a prayer for which our gratitude will remain unceasing.

LETTER FROM FRIENDS OF ST PHILIP'S PRESIDENT Nine years ago, I embarked on my journey as a proud parent of a St. Philip's School and Community Center student. And I am now honored to lead Friends of St. Philip's. From the moment my three-year-old son began his education at SPSCC it became clear to me the significance of expanding community outreach and presence beyond the walls of the school. Friends of St. Philip's is an amazing auxiliary arm to the ministry of St. Philip's School and Community Center. This 200plus member group has impressed me with its ability to galvanize in support of the mission and vision of the school. I was elated to join forces with the FOSP members to create an environment that promotes growth, progress, and wellness. I am so very inspired with the action of FOSP this past year, and I am prayerful that we can continue to build on what has been constructed since the group’s 2019 inception.

The Moody Performing and Fine Arts Pavilion

The Moody Performing and Fine Arts Pavilion will stand as the biggest capital project of the We Believe Campaign. The pavilion will house, among other spaces, a cafetorium, classrooms dedicated to performing and fine arts, an art gallery, offices, outdoor learning spaces, and a storm shelter (a new requirement from the City!).

St. Philip's is partnering with Building Solutions, KAI, and Heart & Gaugler and Associates on the project of the Moody Performing & Fine Arts Pavilion.
