Worthing Theatres and Museum announce exhibition celebrating the creativity of Ukrainian artists in West Sussex Worthing Theatres and Museum are thrilled to be working with the Worthing Ukrainian Friends’ Network to present - Ukrainian Renaissance: art, craft and history - a brand new exhibition celebrating the diverse creativity of Ukrainian refugees in West Sussex.
The exhibition will be on display in Worthing Museum’s Studio Gallery from Saturday 23 September 2023 to Sunday 11 February 2024. It has been a year since the UK and West Sussex welcomed Ukrainians who fled to the British shores to find safety and opportunities to build new lives. With the arrival of Ukrainian refugees came a wealth of creativity to the area which greatly enhances the local community. The group of artists, with differing styles, mediums and backgrounds, will represent the best Ukraine has to offer. The exhibition will celebrate Ukrainines rich and diverse cultural contribution to European culture over more than a thousand years of history. There will be a free Ukrainian Culture Day at the museum on Saturday 25 November 2023. The day, supported by The Worthing Lions, will offer an insight into Ukrainian traditions, arts and crafts. There will be the opportunity to meet some of the artists, free workshops (booking required as places are limited) and a short film about Borsch! After this choirs, Kolo and Ukrainian Voices will perform and there will be a variety of activities which relate to Ukrainian cultural traditions
The exhibition and Ukrainian Culture Day have been organised with the help of the charity Worthing Ukrainian Friends’ Network. Exhibition organiser Yaroslava Matvieienko says ‘As artists, we are grateful for the opportunity to show the local community the heritage and diversity of Ukrainian art and culture. Every one of us is now a cultural diplomat. We aim our mission of delivering our culture and art to the world to be successful.’ Worthing Ukrainian Friends’ Network set up in April 2022 by local activist and philanthropist Mike Tyler with the help of local community leaders to help Ukrainian refugees settle and integrate into their new life in the UK. The organisation aims to support all Ukrainians around in and around Worthing.
