Local Garden Designer It’s that time of year again where we start to see new growth emerging in our gardens and we dare to dream about lazy, hazy summer days pottering about the garden or relaxing outside and feeling the warmth of that first summer sun on our faces.
Immersing ourselves in green spaces has been proven to enhance our health and wellbeing but sometimes we aren’t maximising the positive impact our own outdoor spaces could have on our lives. If your outside space could give you more or you have a space that you feel a bit stuck with, it is always worth talking to a qualified garden designer. Based in Shoreham by Sea and working across Sussex, Kate from KM Garden Design brings contemporary, innovative design to any sized garden or landscape and she is now taking bookings for new projects in 2024. Kate brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her work and says, ‘The key to excellent garden design is getting to know you and the space that you want improving, what is working for you and what isn’t. Trust,
collaboration, and communication are at the heart of my work. By truly listening to you I develop a rich understanding of your dreams and aspirations for the space. Whatever your budget and whether you want a space for work, rest, play or any combination of these, I take the utmost care to deliver a sympathetic, stylish response to your brief.’ During 2023 Kate was kept busy with a range of exciting projects, ‘I just love designing lovely spaces for lovely people and I have been lucky enough to always work with such excellent clients, tradespeople and suppliers. The Purate of Pende Richard Bernard may have been the son of John Bernard, a customs searcher and four times Member of Parliament for New Shoreham (1337-1340, 1355, 1360 & 1363). In February 1363, Richard Bernard’s occupation was officially listed as a ‘mariner of New Shoreham’. Richard Bernard may have been the son of John Bernard, a customs searcher and four times Member of Parliament for New Shoreham (13371340, 1355, 1360 & 1363). In February 1363, Richard Bernard’s occupation was officially listed as a ‘mariner of New Shoreham’. Bernard along with ‘mariners’ John Fraunk, Adam Trome, John Roo, John Clerk and John Lynton (Linton) would perhaps have been more accurately described as pirates.
One of Bernard and his colleagues raids was upon a Flemish ship at anchor in the River Adur, at the port of Pende. (The lost village between New Shoreham and Lancing.) The pirates stole goods to the value of £10. In another raid they attacked a ship from Dunkirk while it was in Shoreham harbour, assaulting the captain, Michael Bembelers (Bemblers). Cargo to the value of 25 marks was stolen. Bernard and his accomplices were arrested for assault and robbery. They then petitioned King Edward III requesting a pardon; having made restitution to Captain Bembelers who it was claimed had released them from all actions made against him. The pardon was issued on the 13th of May 1363. (The petition written in Latin and the pardon with its privy seal are today held at the National Archives.) In July 1369, Bernard again sought a pardon, this time for causing the death of William Atte Wode (Modern Spelling Attwood) at Shoreham.
From the 18th of May 1373 to circa 1377 Richard Bernard was commissioned (as had been his father) as a customs searcher at the port of New Shoreham. He was entrusted to find and confiscate smuggled goods. In 1377 he was master of the ship the Margaret of Shoreham, sailing regularly between Sussex ports and the harbours of France with cargoes of wool. In October of that year he was elected as Member of Parliament for New Shoreham and retained the seat until the first
Local Historian
election of 1382. In the third election of that year a John Lynton became MP for New Shoreham. It’s not known if it he was the pirate who was pardoned in 1363 alongside Bernard who was re-elected in 1383.
In November 1392 at Goring, Bernard acted as broker for a merchant from Rouen to smuggle wool to France. This took place in a ship belonging to John Paynot in the spring of 1393. In June 1393 Bernard and his son John were known to have sold 4 sacks of smuggled wool that was shipped to France by Paynot. On the night of the 30th of September 1393, Richard Bernard and Thomas Kytte were smuggling wool when other members of their gang detained them at Worthing and extorted a payment of 8 marks for their release and the promise of secrecy. In 1395 the crimes of Richard Bernard incurred forfeiture and he stood down as MP for Shoreham. On the 30th of January 1397 however, at the supplication of Edmund, Duke of York, to whom King Richard II granted the Bernard forfeiture, Bernard was pardoned for all offences relating to the illegal sale and smuggling of wool between 1385 to 1386. In November 1398 Bernard was again commissioned as a searcher at Sussex ports, this time for the illegal shipment of bullion. In October 1403 Bernard was recorded as a juror at Bramber on the inquisition post mortem of Sir Robert Goushill, late husband of the dowager duchess of Norfolk. It seems despite his exploits he was always able to return to respectability. Blended Families – the risks of not having a Will In the intricate tapestry of modern family dynamics, blended families have become increasingly common. With these complex family structures, it is crucial to address important legal matters to ensure the wellbeing of your loved ones in the future. One such vital document is your Will. Not having a valid Will can pose significant dangers and complications for all, but particularly so in blended families. When a person dies without a Will, known as dying intestate, the distribution of assets is governed by the laws of intestacy. This default distribution may not align with your wishes, particularly where there is a blended family and your estate may pass to those you did not wish and leave your loved ones financially vulnerable. Biological children and unmarried partners may not be provided for at all; stepchildren and a surviving spouse may face difficulties in determining their rightful inheritance. For families with minor children, a Will can appoint guardians. In blended families, the dynamics may involve multiple parents and stepparents and different rules will apply in different circumstances. Clearly outlining your wishes in a Will can prevent disputes over who should assume responsibility for the upbringing of minor children. Taking advice in this area is important.
The absence of a Will can lead to disputes and conflicts among family members, especially in blended families where relationships may already be delicate. A well-drafted Will provides clarity and minimises the potential for disagreements, legal battles and disappointed loved ones. Having a Will is not just a legal formality but a crucial tool for preserving family harmony and financial security for those you leave behind. Taking the time to consult with qualified legal professionals to draft a comprehensive Will is important and will give peace of mind that your loved ones are provided for. Many people delay making a Will as they cannot decide what to do for the best or how to provide for everyone fairly, your legal advisor will be able to help you with this and finding a solution may not be as difficult as you think. Benfield Legal is a local company who specialise in Wills, Powers of Attorney, Probate and Estate Planning and would be happy to help with your legal needs. If you would like any more information about Wills or any other service then please feel free to contact Deanne Ferguson at Benfield Legal on: 01273 013353 or email deanne@benfieldlegal.co.uk You can visit our website at www.benfieldlegal.co.uk

Supporting Local Women in business
Creating a Biz from your Artistry.
Introducing our first businesswoman in 2024, Japanese Artist Chihiro gives a beautiful insight into running her Mindful Art Workshops.
I am Chihiro, a Japanese artist, creating art and running Mindful Art Workshop in Shoreham. Unlike most art classes, my main focus is to help people relax and enjoy the present moment rather than just trying to improve their artistic skills. My classes are beginner-friendly, and everyone can enjoy unique painting styles such as alcohol ink painting, water marbling, powder ink, and spray painting. I plan to share more of the Japanese way of living, art, and culture this year with my origami classes. I run regular workshops at the Yoga and Wellness Rooms but offer to travel to other places for private workshops, including hen parties, family get-togethers, and team building. I have been running classes for about three years now. People can make enquiries through my website www.chihirohasu.com or email me on chihiro.artuk@gmail.com Facebook page: Chihiro Mindful Art Instagram: @chihirohasu What Are Your Hobbies? Baking, reading manga, watching anime
Who Is Your Role Model? Any women who can stand up for their own rights and respect others
What Advice Would You Give To Someone Who Wants To Be Like You? I would be over the moon if someone told me this, but I would tell them to be who they really are because they are already worthy, unique, and irreplaceable by being themselves. That is also what I want to remind everyone in my workshop! How Has Your Life Changed Since Starting This Company? I used to struggle a lot with anxiety and de-
pression, but I have learned to manage them so much better and gained confidence in myself. Art and connection with lovely people are better remedies for me than medications. Who Helps You With Decisions?
My family and friends, especially my sister. Although she is in Japan, we are still best friends. I don’t always take her advice, but she is the best person to speak with. What Keeps You Motivated Every Day?
I get a small job done first thing in the morning. That helps me feel positive about myself and gives me the energy to keep going. It is always hard to get started, but once you have, you can get the rest done more easily. What Advice Would You Give To An Aspiring Entrepreneur Just Starting Out It is difficult to run your business, but believe in yourself and keep trying.

11 What’s Your Morning Routine?
I start my day with mint tea. Once my children and myself are ready, I open up my diary and write a list of things that need to be done during the day. This helps as I tend to panic and be overwhelmed easily when I have so much on my plate. What’s The Best Piece Of Advice You’ve Ever Received? Look after yourself as you look after your children
How Do You Stay Productive When You’re Feeling Burned Out? You cannot be productive when you feel burned out and may need a few days or more to recover. I prevent burn-out by taking breaks regularly. I try not to feel guilty by telling myself that resting is part of my work. How Do You Balance Work And Life? I have no head space for work when I am with my children, so I guess it sorts itself out for me.
How Much Do You Love What You Do, And Why Is That Important To You?
Running a business on my own is hard and lonely, but I love running my classes. It is an absolute joy that I can put smiles on people’s faces and help them unwind from daily stress with creativity. Is there anything else you want to share with others who wish to start their business in 2024? When things are not going in the way you want, you may feel stuck and it may keep happening, but things will get better as you go. I still face this problem, but I am in a much better place now. I’m wishing you a very good luck and hope you make your dreams come true! website www.chihirohasu.com or email chihiro.artuk@gmail.com Facebook page: Chihiro Mindful Art Instagram: @chihirohasu

Chinese New Year 2024. Year of Wood Dragon In Chinese culture, the Dragon holds a significant place as an auspicious and extraordinary creature, unparalleled in talent and excellence. It symbolizes power, nobility, honor, luck, and success. It is the time of year to celebrate the arrival of spring and the end of winter. The most important holiday in China, which is celebrated around the world, the Chinese New Year, will be celebrated on February 10th. Traditionally, lasting 16 days, commencing on Chinese New Year’s Eve and ending with the Lantern Festival on February 24th. New Year’s Eve is celebrated with a big family meal and traditional dishes. There are many dishes that are very traditional for Chinese New Year’s Eve. Some popular dishes include: Spring Rolls, Dumplings, and Glutinous Rice, called “niangao” in Mandarin.
Good fortune fruit – Tangerines, oranges, and Pomelos are some of the fruits eaten on Lunar Year’s Eve. It is believed that eating these fruits on Chinese New Year’s Eve can bring fortune, as these fruits have round shapes, golden colours, and lucky sounds when spoken, which symbolize fullness and wealth. Longevity Noodles

13 Longevity noodles represent the Chinese’ wish for longevity. The length and preparation of longevity noodles are symbolic of an eater’s life. Longevity noodles are longer than normal noodles, usually fried or boiled, and served in a bowl. Money gift and Money tree Chinese will give children money gifts as lunar New Year gifts on Chinese New Year’s Eve. They usually put money in red pockets and hide under their children’s pillows. In ancient times, Chinese money was a round copper coin, and in the centre was a square hole. Adults would thread the coins with colorful thread to make the shape of a Dragon, and then they would put the money beside their children’s beds while their children were asleep. This custom is very similar to Christmas gifts in the West. A money tree is a legendary tree that will shed coins when shaken. On Chinese New Year’s
Eve, the Chinese will cut some pine branches and put the branches in a vase. Then, they will tie copper coins, shoe-shaped gold or silver, and pomegranate flowers to the tree, which is very similar to Christmas trees in Western countries. On the 24th of February, the Lantern Festival marks the final day of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations. The festival is peppered with colorful red lanterns meant to bring good fortune. Attendees continue their celebrations by eating
sticky rice and performing Lion and Dragon dances. Something that is well renowned throughout the world.

Developer launches competition for public art at Shoreham Harbour
A new riverside path through the redeveloped Western Harbour Arm in Shoreham will feature public art or sculptures - with a £30,000 commission up for grabs. Affordable housing provider Hyde is offering the funding for an artist to create a sculpture or art installation for the Kingston Wharf development so it can be enjoyed by residents, office workers and the community. The regeneration of the site to the west of the Grade II listed Kingston Lighthouse includes the creation of a new riverside walk for the public between the lighthouse and Riverside Business Centre. The funding of the commission is one of the Section 106 commitments to benefit the community that Adur District Council secured from the developer when the scheme was given planning permission. The brief specifies that the artwork should have a local feel, highlighting its connections either to the site or to the wider area around Shoreham and Southwick. The installation can be of any form, and could be a single or multi-piece composition.
There is also land and funding for a new segregated cycleway on the Brighton Road, connecting the development to the wider area through sustainable transport. The deadline for commission applications is 31st March 2024. The winning artist will be announced in summer 2024 following an interview process. The artwork will be installed on-site once the build is completed, which is currently expected to be summer 2026. Cllr Steve Neocleous, Adur’s cabinet member for regeneration and strategic planning, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to create a public art installation for everyone in Shoreham to enjoy. The local element of the brief will ensure that the piece gives a nod to our beautiful corner of West Sussex. “I’m really looking forward to seeing what the winning artist produces, and to having a new local landmark at this exciting waterside development.” Steven Morrice, Hyde’s group development and sales director, said:
“Public art can really enhance the character of an Hyde is constructing 255 shared ownership area and add to the sense of community. and affordable rent flats at Kingston Wharf. The completed development will also include offices, “It’s going to be really interesting to see the self-storage facilities and a public café overlooking proposals which should enhance our scheme at the water. The development will also feature new Kingston Wharf.” flood defences, podium gardens and play areas, new landscaping, public seating and cycle parking. Local Community News
Trying to kick off those January Blues? If you’re feeling a little low and want to do something to help your community, why not consider getting involved in your local Lions Club? Adur East Lions Club, which covers Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate, are a friendly bunch of people trying to make a difference in their community through various fundraising and service projects - This can range from simple street collections to putting on events, such as Santa’s Grotto or the ever popular Family Fun Day in Buckingham Park, Shoreham. We are always on the look out for new members to help, and if you join, you can do as much or as little as you like. Find your niche, whether it’s running a stall at one of our events, organising a car boot sale, helping with our Social Media, serving tea at our Senior’s Tea Social, picking up donkey poop at our Family Fun Day or even dressing up as an Elf for one of our many Christmas activities. There are many different ways you can get involved. We meet once a month, on the fourth Wednesday of the month, at Southwick Indoor Bowling Club. During this meeting we run through what we’ve been up to, what we are planning, and also, very importantly, where to donate the money we have raised. We support many local charities on an annual, or even monthly basis, for example we have made annual donations to 4 Sight Vision, Canine Partners, Safe in Sussex, Sussex MS Centre, Macmillan Cancer Support, Chailey Heritage, Shoreham NCI, & Leo House Currently, we also buy £200 of groceries each month for two local food banks. In a bid to further help during this cost of living crisis, we also run a project called Wencelas, which turns donated winter fuel payments from pensioners, into funds for those in fuel poverty. Our Club has almost 30 Members and consists of several small committees, so if you’re interested, you might consider joining one of these. These committees meet separately, usually at a Members home (then the committee report back to the Club at our monthly meeting). We have a Social Committee, a Christmas Committee, a Family Fun Day Committee and a Tea Social Committee,
all working hard to make the Club run smoothly and do the best we can for our community. Our Social Committee also works really hard to organise events for Members (and their friends and family), on a regular (usually monthly) basis. Whilst we serve our community, it’s also important to spend time relaxing and having fun! Social events include coffee mornings, evening (pub) meals, bowling, pitch-n-putt, and pottery painting, to name just a few. The Social Committee even organise an annual weekend trip away, usually to a Warner’s hotel, which is open to partners and friends. If you want to meet Lions from other Clubs, there are also larger events at Zone, District and Multiple District level. For example in February, our District Convention is being held over a full weekend at the Avisford Park Hotel in Arundel. It will not only consist of formal meetings and a full day’s Convention, but also a themed party on the Friday night, followed by a Banquet & Ball on the Saturday night. A great way to meet like minded Lions from all over the South East area. If you have some time to spare, and the inclination to help in your community, we would love to hear from you. You can call us on 0345 833 7356, or check out our facebook page at www.facebook. com/adureastlionsclub.com

Happenstantial Art
Photography
Very often, a small element can be overlooked I recently discovered a photography Facebook group called ‘Happenstantial Art’ which sounded interesting so I joined without fully understanding the term. It’s actually fairly straight forward and simply means photographing a found subject that you stumbled across by chance. Nothing set up, posed or pre - visualised, something unanticipated or seen almost by coincidence that catches the photographer’s eye. The photographs that have been posted to this group vary in subject matter but many are close ups of peeling paint, ripped posters, interesting reflections or shadows. The nature of this genre means that many pictures are taken on a flat plain meaning they have little if any depth of field which is ideal for capturing with a smartphone. Ensure the phone or camera is held parallel to the subject matter so everything is in focus. Once I had investigated this group it became obvious that I had many photographs that qualified for this heading. I had always referred to them as ‘abstract’ but ‘happenstantial’ is a far better description because not all images of this ilk are abstractions. One of my images here is an arrangement of artefacts that I saw outside a bar in Rhodes. It certainly isn’t an abstract but was something seen by chance, in other words, ‘happenstance’. The
rotting street sign could be referred to as abstract but it is clearly an effect created by corrosion so far more happenstance than abstract. I would, of course, urge you not to take labelling or categorising too seriously as not everything fits a pigeon hole but this interesting term of ‘happenstance’ may get your creativity flowing when you’re next out and about with your camera or smartphone. Keep observing and good luck. Steve Boyle You can see more of my images here: www. instagram.com/shoreham_steve

Paul Hollywood’s Italian Ciabatta Bread is so many different things to so many different people – a snack, a starter, or even an entire meal. For me, its rustic beauty is never bettered than when done by the Italians who, in the same way that they do with so much other cuisine, seem to lace every mouthful with provenance, history and love. Step forward, the ciabatta!

The Arts Society Steyning February talk Life & Times of Puccini A talk by Sarah Lenton
Monday 12 February 2024 at 10am The Steyning Centre, Fletchers Croft, Steyning BN44 3XZ
Puccini only completed six major operas. However, those operas – which include Madam Butterfly, Tosca and La Bohème – are the shows that keep most opera houses afloat. Puccini was a theatre man to his fingertips, a fine stage director, a man who practically invented the cross-fade dawn effect – and yet he left a pile of unfinished works behind him. This lecture explores why such a popular and successful composer had such a baffling career, and how his experience exemplifies the turbulent changes of the 20th century artistic world.
Sarah has spent her working life in the theatre: her principal employers are the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Garsington Opera. She writes programme articles, radio and play scripts, gives lectures on the operas and ballets in the rep. and broadcasts regularly for BBC Radios 3 and 4. She is also a cartoonist. The Look of Love Discover the world and the trend of romantic décor, and bring with it a little love to your home. History The trend has roots in romanticism, an artistic and cultural movement that emerged in the late 18th Century and had a profound influence on various forms of creative expression, including interior decor. Rooted in a fascination with nature, emotion, and the sublime, romanticism in interior decor sought to infuse spaces with a sense of passion, beauty, and nostalgia. Beds were canopied, wallpaper was hand painted with exquisite floral designs and rooms rustled with whispers of velvet and silk. The present Modern romantic décor, by contrast, is far humbler and less outwardly decadent. Though comfort and subtle luxury still play key roles, there is far less flamboyance. In particular, the palate is more muted with beige, pale rose, lavender and powder blue taking centre stage.
Achieving the look When selecting upholstery choose warm, soft tones that create a feeling of cosiness. Fabrics such as linen, suede and velvet will boost the warmth and sensuality of the room, while a cashmere blanket adds that extra layer of luxe. Furniture and decor pieces in traditional romantic interiors were often characterised by ornate detailing and intricate craftsmanship. Elaborate carvings, curvaceous lines, and decorative flourishes were common in pieces like cabinets, chairs, and mirrors furniture that was not just functional but also a work of art. The updated look still incorporates curved lines but there is less intricacy. In fact, choosing wooden furniture that has more of a French rustic feel – a solid wooden dining table, a vintage armoire in washed out grey or an antique chest of drawers that boasts more curves than a corseted lady. Lighting is also a pivotal aspect of this look. Dimmable bulbs are useful to create softer lighting, yet even a few strategically placed candles can boost the romantic aesthetic of a room. Traditional romantic decor also often
featured personal effects and possessions. In our modern commercialised world, it is these personal touches that can be the line between your living room looking like an Ikea showroom or a true home, so embrace but tread carefully. Finally, invest in some transparent curtains. Sheer drapes can be fashioned from delicate, flowing materials such as voile, silk, chiffon, organza, and lace. These style of curtains transform intense sunlight into a gentler, subdued glow, offering both seclusion and the sensation of a room filled with soft, airy illumination.

Dog’s dinner How to find the balance between types of food that are both good for your pet, and the planet. Dietary ethics The first concern is whether it is ethical to decide on behalf of a primarily carnivorous creature, such as a cat or dog, that they will now eschew animal protein altogether. Secondly, are we certain they will have the nutrition they require to thrive, on such a restrictive diet? And finally, will they like it and feel satisfied?

additives and preservatives is not only healthier for your pet but also better for the environment.
Those of us who own a cuddly canine can testify that the odd carrot or chunk of red pepper goes down very nicely. However, even the humble carrot ought only to be given occasionally to your dog as their high sugar content can rot Fido’s teeth. The trick then, is to find a balance that pleases both your planet AND your pet. The environment It follows - one of the most effective ways to reduce the environmental impact of your pet’s diet is to choose dog food that incorporates plant-based ingredients. Traditional meatbased diets often require more resources, such as land, water, and energy, compared to plantbased options. Additionally, the production of meat-based pet food can contribute to deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions. Look for dog food brands that use either insect or high-quality
balanced diet while significantly reducing the carbon footprint of their food. Good to meat you If you prefer to include meat in your dog’s diet, consider selecting products that use ethically sourced, humangrade meat. These meats come from animals raised in more humane and sustainable conditions, reducing the overall environmental impact. Furthermore, supporting companies that prioritise ethical sourcing can encourage better practices in the meat industry. In addition, minimally processed dog food with fewer artificial
Quantity and quality Overfeeding is a common issue among pet owners, leading to excess food consumption and, consequently, more waste. Proper portion control not only promotes your dog’s health but also reduces the amount of uneaten food that ends up in landfills. Consider consulting with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate portion size for your dog’s age, size, and activity level. Extras Finally, when selecting dog food, pay attention to the packaging. Opt for brands that use sustainable packaging materials, such as recyclable or biodegradable options. Reducing the amount of plastic waste generated by pet food packaging can significantly contribute to a greener planet.

February Fiction
As the year fully gets into its stride, why not immerse yourself in a new yarn from this selection of great offerings… Queens of London by Heather Webb Heather Webb crafts a tale of dark glamour and sisterhood in an intriguing look at Britain’s first female crime syndicate, the ever-shifting meaning of justice, and the way women claim their power by any means necessary. Queens of London is set in the murky post-WWI era of our capital, and the showcase is “a gang of women you’ve never heard of,” but one that decided the female of the species can indeed have it all. Published by Sourcebooks Landmark on February 6th
The Fury by Alex Michaelides From the author of The Silent Patient and The Maidens comes a compelling closed community thriller, as a former movie star throws a select
party on a private Greek island whilst a murderer lurks in the shadows. The story begins as former movie star Lana Farrar invites a select group to stay. It’s hot, sunny, perfect. A chance to relax and reconnect - and maybe for a few hidden truths to come out. And they will, because nothing on the island is quite what it seems. Published by Penguin Books Ltd on February 1st Red Side Story by Jasper Fforde The author of The Eyre Affair and The Constant Rabbit delivers a typically singular dystopia rich in wit and his own delightfully singular vision, as two citizens of a world whose hierarchies are based on the colour spectrum strike out on a quest looking for answers.
It’s a tale of a young couple’s thirst for justice and answers in an implacably rigid society. Published by Hodder & Stoughton on February 6th The Guest by B.A. Paris B.A. Paris never fails to deliver a great thriller and The Guest is no exception. Trouble emerges when Iris and Gabriel come home from a make-or-break holiday to find Laure, one of their best friends, in their house. She is sleeping in their bed, wearing Iris’ clothes, even rearranging the furniture. She has walked out on her husband – and their good friend – Pierre over his confession of an affair (and a secret child). Iris and Gabriel want to be supportive, but as Laure’s mood becomes more unpredictable, her presence begins to unravel secrets in all their pasts. Published by Hodder & Stoughton on February 20th
Eddie and Jane must negotiate the delicate Chromatic politics of society to find out what the ‘something that happened’ actually was, how society got to be this way, and crucially, is there ‘somewhere else’ beyond their borders.

Local Community News
An Evening to Remember Two years ago, on 24th February 2022, Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since then it is reported that Russia has lost around 360,000 soldiers and has killed almost 30,000 Ukrainian soldiers.
At least 10,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed including more than 560 children, over 18,500 civilians injured, one third of the total population displaced and over 200,000 Ukrainian children deported to Russia according to the UN. Over 1.5 million homes have been destroyed. Of course, these huge figures do not begin to describe the human tragedies of this horrific war; the families who have lost loved ones fighting for their homeland, the desperate separation of families as mothers and children fled Ukraine leaving their husbands, brothers and sons to defend their country; the often frightening and dramatic journeys told by those fleeing Ukraine trying to escape Putin’s missiles and bombs. Britain has provided a welcome to 174,000 Ukrainian guests (figures correct at May 2023). More recently, the conflict in the Middle East with its own atrocities has pushed the situation in Ukraine to the tail end of the news, but for so many people, especially those still in Ukraine, those who left the country and also the many host families who offered friendship and shelter to Ukraine refugees, the war in their country is still very real and very frightening. In the summer of 2022, a group of people in the Adur area came together to form the Adur Ukraine Support Association (AUSA). The group comprised a number of Ukrainian refugees, diaspora, some host families and others wanting to provide help and support. Partly self-funded but also with some grant funding provided by Adur District Council and the Masonic Charitable Foundation, the Association has embarked on a number of activities to assist local Ukrainians to settle in our area, enjoy a range of family friendly
activities and provide valuable access to other supportive organisations. In recognition of the trauma and mental distress that the war has caused, particular support has been given to the mental health and welfare of the Ukrainians with extra emphasis placed on the needs of younger children. AUSA run regular day trips to places of local interest, to engage in local activities and to enjoy the outdoors. There is incredibly strong feedback on the positive effect of these excursions on the mental health and general wellbeing of the Ukrainians. Places visited include castles, gardens, activity days and attending fun events such as the Jack in the Green Festival in Hastings – most of which are in conjunction with Sompting Big Local using their minibus.
Most recently, and for the second year running, AUSA organised a Christmas party (held in the Shoreham Baptist Church at the kind invitation of the Church trustees) to celebrate the Ukrainian Christmas. Volunteers prepared the food, decorated the hall and organised games for the children. Local people donated food and gifts. The evening also included singing, musicians and dancing with the AUSA Folk Dance group. It is often asked, how is it possible to enjoy a

concert, enthuse over visits to local Sussex sights or sing and dance at a party while Russia continues to drop bombs and fire missiles into Ukraine. The response from one of the AUSA members was very moving - “outside we are joyful but inside we are crying”. We are frequently told of the benefits of distraction from what is happening at home, how welcome that is and how beneficial to enjoy ‘normal’ activities, even if just for a few hours. AUSA wants to continue to do all it can to bring some smiles and light relief to our guests, and in particular
the children, who have found friendship, peace and security in Adur. Sadly, the war continues with no sign of any withdrawal by Russia. Meanwhile our guests will continue to need our friendship and support and AUSA will continue to require funds to subsidise day trips, provide more general support and finance occasional events where our guests can forget about the war for a few hours. And there is always the need for volunteers to help. On Saturday 24th February AUSA members will be trying to raise public awareness about the current situation in Ukraine. There will be a gathering at the Shoreham War Memorial at 11am and then a Living Library with Displaced Persons telling their own stories. Storytellers will be located at churches around the town inviting the public to listen and ask any questions. For further information on the event, other AUSA activities and ways in which you can help please visit our website at www. adurukrainesupport.org.uk

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a magnificent broadcaster, gifted gardener, brilliant author and all-round horticultural visionary. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the best flowers – other than roses – for Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is a celebration decorated by crimson petals and sweet scents, often symbolised by the ever-present rose. Yet, when it comes to our gardens, there is so much more out there that can raise the thoughts of romance. So while many folk end up finishing too; but hopefully this year I can show you there is so much more out there. First, let us pay homage to the tulip, a bloom that, in its elegance, speaks of perfect love. From purest whites through to deepest purples is really quite beautiful. The Victorians knew well the majesty of this flower – a sign of undying love that exceeded
the value of a humble rose many times over! Elsewhere, many regard the orchid as a bloom of exotic beauty, mystique and delicacy… certainly the latter is true, and there probably isn’t one of us who hasn’t at some point panicked as this lithe, flimsy plant sways about in the footwell of the car on the way back from the garden centre! Ultimately though, the orchid is a symbol of love, luxury and, believe it or not, strength. Its delicate appearance belies its resilience. Let’s also not overlook the allure of the peony, with its lush, full-bodied blooms. It embodies romance and prosperity and is believed to bring good fortune and a happy marriage. A bouquet of peonies suggests a promise for abundant joy in the years to come. And finally, for those with a fondness for tradition with a twist, the ranunculus (or buttercup as it is often better known) is an enchanting choice. With rose-like blossoms, ranunculuses are all about charisma and allure – a fine way to celebrate a day dedicated to affection. The answer to what you should give to a loved one on Valentine’s Day though is, ultimately, anything! Even a
sprig of lavender, a lone daisy, or a single bluebell – let the flower you choose be just the first step to a commitment every bit as great as the gardens and allotments and window boxes we tend to. Look after your partner, look after your garden – and they will love you back!

Viva La Propriétaire! Why let your dreams of becoming a landlord pass you by when you can look to France to start your investment? While the outlook in Britain only looks set to get worse for landlords, the French buy-tolet model means landlords can make a promising income from their property portfolio. Start with research When selecting an area to invest in, look at affordability and market demand. In other words, your chosen destination must be thriving to the extent that a lot of people are motivated to move there for work, but not thriving to the extent that the initial investment price is breathtakingly high. Brittany capital Rennes and Maine-et-Loire capital Angers both have promising demographics, and good average rental yields at 8.2% and 6.2% respectively. As places, there are also easily accessible from London – catch the Eurostar to Paris, then connect to your destination in under two hours.
Property type Generally speaking, apartments offer better returns, and if you invest in new developments you may benefit from the Loi Pinel tax break. This gives relief from income tax for investment in new-builds in selected areas, related to a percentage (from 12-21%) of the purchase price. However, it must be rented out for at least six years, and the longer you have the property for, the better the breaks. As with a UK investment, buying somewhere that needs a little work before you can invite tenants in is your best for higher yield, but of course this requires an extra level of commitment. Understand the French property philosophy The French system is designed to bring long-term security to both the landlord and the tenant. Furnished homes come with a one-year-lease, much like in the UK, however unfurnished properties have an automatic three-year-lease. Naturally there is little red tape before a property can be rented. It must be surveyed with electrical and gas systems being vetted, and be thoroughly inspected for dangers such as asbestos, lead paint or termites.
Financial fundamentals There are also buying costs and ongoing taxes that must be considered. In addition to estate agent fees there are other legal fees and taxes which vary depending on the region. Finally, look out for the ‘Taxe Foncière’, a property tax that must be paid by the owner of any property, and on average is around €800 to €900 per year. The biggest question of course, is simply whether you want to take a chance on a foreign market, but a little time in this magnificent country will have you feeling à la maison.
