The Lost Northbourne Stream.

Reginald Arthur Leggett was born on the 21st of March 1906 in South Kensington, London. His parents moved to Bungalow Town, Shoreham Beach in 1910. His father built and owned eight of the bungalows there. Reg Leggett’s first experience of school was in 1912, in the bungalow ‘La Margarette’, south of Beach Road.

It was run by Mrs Lambert who was known as ‘Granny.’ In 1929, he opened his estate agents in Shoreham. In 1954 he married Gladys Stevens and in 1957 founded the Shoreham Preservation Society. Reg Leggett campaigned for the Shoreham bypass, saying that, “In 1967 the town centre was faced with total annihilation from re-development plans.” In 1985, he became chairman of the Historic Shoreham Trust. Then in 1994, at the age of 88, he wrote a letter to Miriam Nixey of 30 Mill Lane, about Shoreham’s lost Northbourne Stream. The stream now flows underground due to the 20th century houses and Swiss Gardens School that were built over the top of it and more recently, its later stages have been covered by the Ropetackle North estate off of Old Shoreham Road.

In his letter dated the 20th of November 1994, Reg Leggett imagined walking along the stream as it had been in 1900, when most of Shoreham was still open countryside. First it had flowed from a chalk spring on the then still heavily wooded South Downs into the ponds of Little Buckingham, where two cottages stood. The West Cottage was prone to flooding, as its floor was 2 feet below ground level. This was because the cottages had once been watermills, dating back to 1230. The only surviving landmark from Little Buckingham today is its farm dovecote, now surrounded by houses at Downsway. The stream then once flowed west of Downsway, cutting across a cart track. When new housing was built here in the 1950s, this track became what is now The Avenue. There is a significant dip in this street that was once a ford in the stream. It then flowed into the Maize Field where maize is recorded as growing up to 14 feet high. In the 1930’s this area was built on, with the houses that now lie between between Downsway and Buckingham Avenue. The stream in 1900 had flowed on downhill into the Oxen field. This had been the town’s showground for sporting events, fairs and a visiting circus. The glasshouses of Mr and Mrs Goldsmith’s nurseries were directly opposite. Then in the 1930s, the area occupied by the glasshouses became Northbourne Close and the field became covered by the houses of Oxen Avenue. The dip in Upper

Shoreham Road between Oxen Avenue and Mill Lane marks another point where the stream had once been forded.

At Mill Lane in 1279, a causeway dammed, narrowed and strengthened the stream to power a watermill owned by William Baudefar. Upon his death his son John wasn’t old enough to inherit it, so his mother Isabel placed John and the mill in the custody of Robert de Blechington, the vicar of Old Shoreham. The vicar was to raise the boy and was granted a court judgement that allowed John to inherit the mill before he attained his lawful age. The watermill stood where Cemetery Lodge stands today.

The house at 34 Mill Lane, Reg Leggett believed, was built on the filled in millpond. Beside Miriam Nixey’s former home of 30 Mill Lane is the flint-walled twitten known as the Kissing Gate Path. Fragments of a medieval ship were found in the Mill Lane Cemetery, so perhaps shallow draught boats once sailed right up to the watermill. Alongside the cemetery is the dip containing the houses of Overmead. This is bordered by higher ground containing the back gardens of Victoria Road. Reg Leggett attended a private school here run by Kitty Glazebrook.

From Victoria Road there is access to the Meads community space and also allotments, where the stream is still visible as a concrete-walled drainage ditch. The stream flows underneath the Swiss Gardens School, which is built upon part of a filled-in lake that was once in the old Swiss Gardens, pleasure grounds. The Swiss Cottage pub and a much smaller lake and grounds remain. The Northbourne stream then flows beneath Buckingham Street, across the Old Shoreham Road and underneath the recently built Ropetackle North estate before discharging into the River Adur.

A 1350 map of Shoreham shows that from Mill Lane, the Northbourne Stream was once a wide tributary of the much larger Adur estuary with an inlet used as a harbour. To protect the town from flooding, a large earth mound ran along its length called the Green Dam, as it was on the track known as Green Lane.

Reg Leggett lived at The Old Tiled Cottage, 15 Middle Street. On the 31st of December 1996, he died aged 90 and he is buried in St Nicolas Churchyard.

Jonathan Samuel:Retrorama Records

I’ll always remember the look of surprise on my customer’s face when I valued one vinyl LP from her ‘unwanted’ carrier bag of records at £500

The record was Nick Drake’s 1972 ‘Pink Moon’

So how do I value records that come through the door at Retrorama Record Shop?

Well, there are a multitude of factors to consider.

First and foremost is condition; no matter how rare a record, if it’s scratched, warped or grubby then the value is inevitably diminished.

Secondly, the record may be rare as not produced in large numbers, or a promo copy exclusively issued to DJs for radio play.

In the case of the Nick Drake LP, it had very mixed reviews when it was released over 50 years ago and sold poorly, so only limited numbers were pressed.. Nowadays it’s rightly regarded as a sublime piece of work, and so the much sought after original copies are rare and valuable.

The excitement I get when looking through record collections offered to me for sale never wanes, as I never know what I may find.

Most of the time the records I view have been ‘well loved’ and I try to give them the reverence

An evening of dancing, music and food…. …to celebrate Ukrainian culture, support our Ukrainian guests and raise much needed funds for Ukrainian charities

PLEASE KEEP A NOTE OF THE DATESaturday 20th April in the Shoreham Centre from 6pm to 9pm

Everyone is welcome to join us for this special evening of friendship, music, food and dancing. In particular, live music will be provided by Bing Lyle and the Polypolka English Folk Dance band, guest performers will include the acclaimed Ukrainian Voices of Brighton choir with dancing demonstrations by the locally famous Adur Ukraine folk dance group.

they deserve. Even if not particularly valuable, they have meant a lot to somebody, and I’m always respectful of that. After all, your music collection is the soundtrack to your life.

Sometimes records may seem ‘commonplace’ but are actually worth more than you think. For instance in the 90s most music was made on CD format , so vinyl copies are ‘rare’ ....original Oasis ‘What’s the Story’ can be worth £200 on vinyl even though it sold 350,000 copies mostly on CD in it’s first week.

If you’d like help valuing your records please feel free to pop into Retrorama at Tarmount Studios ...you may just have a hidden gem.

Hats for Hope

What is Wear A Hat Day?

Wear A Hat Day is Brain Tumour Research’s biggest annual event, raising money to bring hope to brain tumour patients and their families.

Wear A Hat Day is Brain Tumour Research’s biggest annual event, raising money to bring hope to brain tumour patients and their families.

Every March, as Brain Tumour Awareness Month comes to a close, people from all walks of life put on their favourite hat at work, in school, with friends and family, and hold hat-themed events and make donations to help find a cure for brain tumours, which kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer.

Surprisingly, only 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this disease since records began in 2002.

Wear a Hat Day has been running since 2010 and has so far raised more than £2 million to help raise awareness of this devastating disease, campaign for the Government and larger charities to invest more, and fund ground-breaking research at their network of Centres of Excellence, where scientists are focused on improving treatments for patients and, ultimately, finding a cure.

Lions Clubs around the country are working in partnership with Brain Tumour Research, to raise £1 million to help fund game-changing research and raise awareness of the impact of brain tumours. Adur East Lions Club (which covers Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate), will be running their fourth ‘Wear a Hat Day’ at the Shoreham Artisans’ Market on Saturday 27th April. We may not be holding it in March this year, but we’re still hoping the residents of Shoreham will come out and show their support, either by wearing a hat or donating into one of our fundraising buckets around town.

We will also be selling limited edition Wear a Hat Day pins (for only £2.00) on our stall. Please come along and support us on the day, helping us raise much needed funds for this worthwhile charity, Alternatively, just come along to learn more about

Brain Tumour Research, or our Lions Club, we’d love to meet you!

Street Photography in Fuerteventura

At the time of writing I have just returned from a few days in Corralejo, Fuerteventura staying with an old mate of mine who is also a photographer. We walked for miles as we looked for scenes and situations to photograph.

The quality of light in the Canaries brings colours to life, throws interesting shadows and creates reflections and silhouettes. I have presented a quadriptych of colour photographs here but I must mention that this type of light works especially well for monochrome too.

Top left photo has many levels with the silhouetted taxi driver made prominent by the well lit white background of the hotel wall. The lighting renders that part of the image as virtually monochrome apart from the blue door. To the left is his taxi with a boat sailing on the sea behind giving added interest to the background.

Top right is unusual as the yellow van is reflected in windows on both sides of the narrow road. The shadowed foreground takes the eye of the viewer through into the main focal points of the van and driver. Bottom left is a simple colour match with the hi - viz

This scene was rapidly changing before our eyes as the workers moved around and traffic passed by. A small group of English holiday makers stopped to try to figure out what we were photographing and were unimpressed when we explained that the repetition of greens had caught our interest. It wasn’t in line with their usual holiday snaps of beach selfies, I suppose ! Each to their own !

Bottom right is the Marina which gives the marine life mural as a backdrop to my image. It was just a matter of patience to wait for three figures to move into pleasing positions in the frame to complete the scene of them being dwarfed by the painted sea creatures.

Modern British Sculpture: Moore, Hepworth, Caro, Frink and Others

Monday 8th April 2024

10.00am – 12.00

The Steyning Centre, Fletchers Croft, Steyning BN44 3XZ

This lecture explores the work of prominent sculptors in the 20th century, including Epstein, Moore, Hepworth, Caro, Frink, and Gormley. They embraced modernism in diverse ways, drawing inspiration from different cultures and techniques. While some pursued social and humanitarian themes, others preferred an abstract approach. Despite their differences – and some clashes and quarrels - these sculptors have an enduring influence. The talk also discusses the distinction between sculpture and installation. Felpham SC sailor awarded performance bursary

Aspiring young sailor Louie Cornell from Felpham has received a Performance Bursary from the RYA London and South East Youth Training Fund.

The bursaries provide modest financial support to help young sailors fulfil their recognised racing or coaching potential. In return, recipients pass on their experience and enthusiasm to help inspire others through their club and regional training events.Louie (14) is in his third full season at Felpham Sailing Club (FSC), has started stage 4 in the RYA youth Sailing scheme and also completed the start racing syllabus.

He has represented the club at the West Sussex Schools Sailing Association event two years running in a RS Tera Pro dinghy where he achieved a second and fourth place and helped his club to win the event both years.

This season he competed in the Southern Traveller Series, going as far as Northampton for the start of the season race. Winter training was also attended at Emsworth at the beginning of this year.Louie has been racing at his club every Friday on cadet night and is also a regular at Skills Saturday. He has been racing on Sundays under the coaching of Jack Miller, Tim Hulse and the watchful eyes of Paul Miller and Roger Belton.

Having now grown out of the Tera he has recently

moved up to a Laser 4.7 dinghy and his new journey has begun. With this move the costs will increase with boat hire and travelling further for training; the bursary will help with this.

Contributing

The awards depend on the winner’s commitment to contribute to their club or class association. Louie is always keen to help out at the club and is happy helping the younger cadets with rigging and answering questions they have.

Why Louie was nominated

In nominating Louie for the award, Roger Belton, RYA regional team chair, said: “Louie has enjoyed three seasons of sailing and racing at FSC. He rapidly found that he enjoyed the challenge of racing and has soaked up any race training available at Felpham, Emsworth and elsewhere.

“He has demonstrated a desire to improve his skills and also travel to events away from home. FSC has supported Louie by providing a Tera dinghy on permanent loan for a nominal fee and also helped with supply of good quality loan wetsuits. This support has been very much appreciated by his family. He is now too big for a Tera so he is going to use one of the club’s three John Merricks ILCA dinghies over the winter and in the season ahead.

“Louie is a very bright positive young person who puts a lot back into the club. I fully expect that he will be aiming to become an RYA Dinghy Instructor and Race Coach Level 2.”

Louie on the water Louie receives his award from Roger Belton.

Louie said of receiving his bursary: “I am so happy to have been chosen for this award, and thanks to everybody Involved in helping me in my sailing, It’s nice to be recognised and supported for something I love doing.”

From the Youth Training Fund

Dave Ellis, Chair of the RYA London and South East Youth Training Fund, says: “It’s fantastic for young sailors to be able to experience a range of opportunities, both in the UK and internationally, during their development as they learn so much. But the costs of travel, accommodation, food etc. all quickly mount up and the bursaries provide some assistance to our young sailors as they develop their sailing careers”.

“We have an abundance of talent in the region and we want to give our young sailors, whether destined for ‘podiums’ or as coaches, the best chance to realise their ambitions.”

UHSussex welcomes 24 baby ‘leaplings’

Two dozen babies have made their first appearance into the world on Leap Day, February 29, delivered across hospitals at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

The odds of babies, known as “leaplings” born on this day, are one in 1,461, making this a very special day for these little leaplings delivered yesterday.

One of the new arrivals is baby girl Dottie, born at 6.13am weighing 6lb 1oz, born to parents Katie and Luke who did consider a Leap Day birth could be on the cards.

Katie said: “We did joke about it after we found out my due date was 1 March!” But the pair admitted they were pleased about their baby girl’s Leap Day birthday, as it meant she would always have something unique about her.

For parents Mirabella and Samir, their first child, baby girl Serena born at 9.34am at 5lb 5oz, will be celebrating her first birthday as part of a two-day bonanza from the 28 February to the 1 March.

Altogether 11 baby boys and 13 baby girls were welcomed on Leap Day at UHSussex hospitals.

Surf kayaking -Competing in the world championship in May 2024

Hi, my name is Anna, and I recently moved to Brighton. I’m raising funds to attend the Surf Kayaking World Championship in Argentina in May 2024.

I have been kayaking since 2021 in Bude, Cornwall and was introduced to the sport working for an outdoor pursuits company. In my first competition in June 2022, I competed in the ladies’ category as I was the only junior female. I have been accepted onto the England team and would love to compete in the junior female category for two reasons. First, because this sport is my passion, and it is a fantastic opportunity for me. Second, junior females are under-represented in this sport, and I would love for this to change.

The categories I am competing in are Junior female short boat and Junior open short boat.

Since my first competition, I have attended many others, including the British Championships in Wales in September 2023, where I placed second in the female short boat.

The 2024 World Championship starts on May 3rd and finishes on the 13th. I will fly to Argentina a few days early on April 28th to practice and prepare. My parents are very supportive and have helped me buy the kit and drive me across the country to competitions and training, but I will only be able to make

this trip with extra funding. The money that I raise would be put towards flights, transport for my kayak, accommodation, insurance, and the extra kit needed to travel.

I have set up a ‘GoFundMe’ account at this link, https://www.gofundme.com/f/surf-kayaking-world-championship-argentina-2024. Or you can follow the barcode at the bottom.

This is an opportunity of a lifetime to compete for my country in a sport that I love. Please help me and be a part of my journey to get there.

Older Stagers Step into the Limelight

With mental health in later life increasingly under the spotlight, one Brighton organisation has been busy making a positive difference to older people in Shoreham and Southwick. How? By bringing theatre into people’s lives.

Age is a Stage drop in drama workshops are led by Chris Cresswell, an experienced performer who has been teaching and appearing in theatre, cabaret circus and film for over 40 years. He champions the vital role comedy and theatre skills can play in developing and promoting healthy ageing, and combatting loneliness.

The weekly interactive drop-in drama workshops are held at the Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham-by-Sea where anyone aged over fifty is warmly welcome.

Classes provide a creative outlet, encouraging playfulness and creativity and forging new connections between participants. But not only that - theatre skills can help improve memory and mood in later life, too.

Scientific research has shown that participating in the arts can improve health, wellbeing and independence in older adults. Because theatre skills involve the mind, emotions and the body, they can boost problem-solving and even brain power in later life. Theatre skills involve working together, so foster a sense of

belonging, boost self-esteem and confidence, and reduce anxiety.

Chris says: ‘I feel drama is important for older adults because it gives them a chance to contact their inner child, and to rediscover the joy of play and of using imagination.’

Classes are a friendly, safe space, and no experience is needed. As member Sue puts it, ‘it’s been the most inspiring experience I’ve had since I gave up my career. I’ve found myself again and I can be me!’

Classes are held in the auditorium at The Ropetackle Centre on Tuesdays at 10.30am. New members are most welcome.

Building on the success of the weekly workshops and featuring class members, Age is a Stage will be performing a brand-new stage show for 2024, The Insurrection Shuffle,at the BOSCO Theater at the Spiegeltent in Brighton on 9th and 30th May. The show, with a troupe of eager older stagers, conjures up a rich and absurd world

and invites you to play. With Chris Cresswell’s well-honed brand of chaos, it will be crammed with the comedy sketches that make Age is a Stage so much fun, alongside a good dash of mirth and mayhem.

If you are interested in stepping onto the stage, Find out more at www.ageisastage.co.uk
