Local Historian

Brian Hall

Brian Charles Hall was born on the 20th of November 1937 in Stepney, London.

Upon leaving school he undertook The Knowledge, reputedly the toughest test in London.

It involved having to recite from memory how he would get to one of 25,000 possible locations randomly selected by an examiner, with the goal of obtaining his taxi driver’s licence.

As well being a London cabbie, Brian Hall was also a teenage actor. His first acclaimed role was in 1969, in the play The Royal Hunt Of The Sun by Peter Shaffer. The Hornchurch Repertory Company at the Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch in Essex staged it. In 1971, Brian Hall broke into TV when he played the corrupt PC Ted Drake for 16 episodes in the police drama Softly, Softly: Taskforce.

In 1972, Brian Hall gave a notable performance in renowned theatre director Peter Gill’s production of Crete and Sergeant Pepper at the Royal Court Theatre. In 1974 and 1975 he played Fabian in Twelfth Night and in 1974 Ginger in Afore Night Come, both with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

He also played Hamo in Peter Gill’s production of Edward Bond’s The Fool at The Royal Court Theatre in 1975.

Brian Hall guest-starred in many a TV series, often typecast as a gangster or a henchman. He was Ernie Davies in The Sweeney in 1975 and Sam Burton in The Professionals in 1978 and a prison officer in Rumpole of the Bailey in 1978.

In 1979 Brian Hall received his most remembered role. It was a chance to break away from the hard men he usually portrayed on screen when he played Terry Hughes - the cheerful and lovable hotel chef, in the second series of the legendary sitcom Fawlty Towers. In the series his chef works for hotelier Basil Fawlty, played by John Cleese.

The two actors became lifelong friends and when the series ended, Cleese sent Hall a signed, autographed photo of himself as a joke. Brian wrote back demanding a “signed Rolls-Royce” instead and one duly arrived, three days later, only true to Cleese’s humour it was actually a toy car sent via the post.

In 1980, Brian Hall played convict Terry Stokes in the film McVicar and Alan the bodyguard to Bob Hoskins’ gangster in the classic film The Long Good Friday. His theatre work at this time included

Brian Charles Hall co-writing Made It Ma! with John Chapman, which was performed at the Royal Court. He also cowrote with Tunde Ilkoli, the play A Bit A Business, about Brian’s brief boxing career as an East End teenager. A Bit of Business was staged at the National Theatre and the script is now held at the Victoria & Albert Museum in the Theatre and Performance Archives.

Brian Hall’s next much-remembered role came in 1981, when he played brutal stepfather Eddie Green in the BBC1 children’s drama Break in the Sun. As the series progresses, Eddie Green comes to terms with his own violent childhood and has a change of heart and is reconciled with his stepdaughter. In 1982 he played another Eddie in the touring play Seasons Greetings and in 1983 he was Brian the barman in the TV Series Up The Elephant And Round The Castle. In 1986, he played Eugene in Ask For The Moon at The Hampstead Theatre, remaining a star of both stage and screen into the 1990’s.

Brian Hall was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 1994 and commented at the time, “One thing’s for sure. To me, cancer is a bully - and I hate bullies.

The only rows and upsets I’ve had in life have been about bullying, and this old boy cancer will get as much change out of me as all the other bullies did - nothing!” He died in Worthing on the 17th of September 1997 and is buried at St. Nicholas Churchyard, Shoreham-by-Sea Judy Upton Sources: IMDB The National Archives

Have you made Lasting Powers of Attorney?

Some of us may find it uncomfortable thinking about the future and what would happen if we lost mental capacity but turning our minds to it now, may prevent unnecessary distress for our loved ones in the future.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document appointing trusted relatives, friends or professionals to help manage your financial affairs and/or make decisions about your health and welfare if you become unable to make decisions for yourself.

You may be thinking “none of this affects me as I’m perfectly well” but the key thing to remember is, you can only set up LPAs when you have the mental capacity to do so.

There are two types of LPA, one for your property and financial affairs and the other for your health and welfare.

Property and financial affairs LPA - This allows you to choose one or more people to make decisions about money and property; for example, paying bills, collecting benefits, making investments, selling your home. This type of LPA can be used if you lose mental capacity but can also be used before if you give consent.

Health and Welfare LPA - This allows you to

choose one or more people to make decisions about things like medical care and moving into a care home. There is also an option to give your attorneys authority to make decisions about life sustaining treatment. A health and welfare LPA can only be used if you lose mental capacity.

Both types of LPA need to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before they can be used.

A LPA allows you to plan in advance and allows you to maintain some control over decisions other people may have to make for you. It is an important document and you should take great care in choosing your attorney(s). They should be trustworthy and have the necessary skills to make the decisions you are entrusting to them.

If you do not have a LPA, someone may need to apply to the Court of Protection to be able to manage your affairs. This can be a costly and lengthy process and can be very stressful for those involved. You will not have control over who applies to the Court, which may result in someone you would not have chosen being in control.

Local Author: Michael Windross

CATCHING UP with the PAST

Michael Windross was born in Carlisle in 1942. He was a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral from 1952 to 1956, and then moved on to Lancing College and St John’s College Cambridge, where he read history as well as being a choral scholar.

Michael emigrated to Belgium in 1964 and taught for forty years at the Higher Institute for Translators and Interpreters in Antwerp.

He was awarded his PhD by Louvain University in 1988. He has published in the fields of historical linguistics and the history of ideas.

Catching up with the Past is his first venture into non-academic writing. He and his wife, Elly, divide their time between Antwerp, Shoreham, and Abruzzo in Italy.

Catching up with the Past is a fascinating account of Michael Windross’ life. From his early childhood in Cumberland, it moves to London - where, as a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral, he also sang at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in the Abbey; then to Lancing College, to Cambridge, and crossing the North Sea, to Antwerp. Events follow in a linear progression - but with echoes from a distant past.

In part two, the reader is transported back to Dumfriesshire in the nineteenth century and taken on a journey that retraces the family’s past through written records and objects that tell their own tale. The narrative follows the now familiar path but then shifts to Australia, Gallipoli, and, in World War II, to the Anzio beachhead - as described by the author’s father, Brian, in letters written to Doris, his wife.

The story comes full circle.

This is a life well lived. The book will appeal to those who share the writer’s love of the past,

who have a strong sense of time and place and are game for a bit of detective work!

MIRROR MIRROR: JENNIFER PULLING’S BLISTERING NEW BOOK With Mirror Mirror launched this month, local author, Jennifer Pulling has written a book unlike any of her previous novels. It confronts social media’s appetite to worship beauty. and gain followers. The world of selfies where who you are as a unique person is unconsidered.

In Mirror Mirror, Stacey has come a long way from frumpy reporter to selfie queen. With her job on a popular chat show and romance with Dan, life couldn’t be better. An assignment with horribly disfigured Madeleine sets in motion events that will change all that. Burn victim Madeleine has written an acclaimed love story and soon Dan falls under the spell of the book and then its author.

As Stacey struggles to cling on to the glamorous world she now inhabits, Dan discovers his real self belongs to a place where true love is the key and appearances are the least important.

Says Jennifer The idea came to me while I was on holiday in Spain last year. I was visiting a beautiful park and enjoying nature when I saw this woman setting up her camera tripod before a lake and posing for innumerable selfies. It was clear she was oblivious to the beauty around her just focussing on how she looked.

I wondered what might happen if she found her true life was being swallowed up by her obsession and what she might stand to lose.

Voila the book grew from there and practically wrote itself. It’s a short book, a novella and the pace move fast as Stacey and Dan travel their different paths. It is a book I’d like all young women and men to read and understand that anything taken to extreme can be destructive.

Local Artist

ART with Hannah Chapman Will this be your year of creativity? Local art teacher Hannah Chapman wants you to start your artistic journey with her. I asked her a few questions to find out more about her and her work.

It would be great to have a brief synopsis of your career as an artist.

When,where and how you started, possibly?

I’ve loved art for as long as I can remember. My mum says when I was a toddler she could just pop me in the corner with some crayons and I’d keep myself entertained for hours. I did art up to A level, then studied History of art and Italian at uni and moved to Italy as soon as I graduated.

In my late twenties I rediscovered drawing and painting and started exhibiting my work in Rome, and then in London after I moved back to the UK in 2009.

Where do you find inspiration?

I’m influenced by so many things! Being an artist is like being a magpie, always hoarding up shiny bits of inspiration. I get inspired by other artists, by my travels, and most of all by being out in nature.

Since I moved to Shoreham last October I’ve loved exploring the seafront and riverside, taking lots of photos to use back in the studio.

What is your favourite medium?

People always ask me this, but it’s hard to say as I like so many. A few years ago I was mostly painting abstract landscapes in acrylic or oil, but nowadays I’m enjoying more illustrative techniques – layering up inky washes and fineliner drawings. I love playing around with unexpected combinations such as pastel, collage and watercolour. You never know what will happen, which is part of the fun!

Is there a special time of day that you like to create?

Not really but I much prefer working with natural light, and plenty of it if possible! I love a sunny morning in my studio. That said, creativity, particularly craft activities, can be a great comfort during our long dark winters.

How important is art to society and to the community?

Banksy (quoting Cruz) has said that ‘art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable’;

for me this sums up how important art is to all members of society. I’ve seen so many times how creativity can transform lives – bringing greater connection with others, boosting self-esteem and improving wellbeing – even for people facing severe adversity. Some of my most rewarding work has been helping people with dementia to make art and poetry, first tapping into feelings of joy and sensations in the body.

What made you decide to teach art?

When I was living in Rome I did a stint as an English (TEFL) teacher, and found that I loved teaching – so when I got back into painting I realised I could combine these two passions and returned to the UK to train as an art teacher. I’ve taught children and adults of all ages and abilities, in classrooms, mental health centres, village halls and residential homes. My approach is a mix of structure (learning the ‘rules’) and experimentation (breaking them!)

In their first lesson, many of my students say ‘I can’t draw’ or even ‘don’t expect much from me’ – I love seeing them gain skills and confidence as the weeks go by. I can’t wait to get to know the local community in Shoreham and see what we can create together!

Local Community News

‘Young people combat loneliness in the community through inter-generational board games sessions.’

Local young people are taking action against loneliness this winter by organising open board game sessions, complete with biscuits, board games, and cups of tea!

Members of the public are invited to enjoy some festive company and try their hand at a variety of board games at the first two events, organised for the 19th of December from 2-4 pm at the Lancing Community Hub and the 19th of January from 5:30-6:30 pm at the Adur Community Cafe.

Young adults from ESTEEM are organising the sessions, which are also being supported by young people from Electric Storm Youth.

Sophie O’Regan, from the ESTEEM team, had this to say about the event: “It’s very exciting to be leading the project because I think it’s important to reach out to people in our community, especially during the winter season when people might feel isolated.

There’s still quite a lot of stigma and stereotypes between both generations. We’re hoping to rewrite that narrative and bridge the gap between young people and the elderly.”

Cat Arnold, Manager of Adur Community Cafe: “We are looking forward to friends from Esteem joining our cafe in the New Year, the prospect of a variety of games has got the guests interested, and they are a great way of breaking down barriers in an informal way in order to start and nurture friendships.”

to this event as they are always keen to help with community projects, and they are very passionate about the idea of working to combat loneliness. It is also great to be working with ESTEEM and the other organisations as it shows the wonderful things young people and different organisations can do when we work together.”

Home Instead intergenerational Christmas event A local home care company hosted an intergenerational Christmas event in Hove this year and will be distributing Christmas cards to their clients from a local school, to celebrate the festive season.

Home Instead Brighton, Hove and Shoreham invited volunteers from Goldstone Primary School to join their older clients for a Christmas party event.

This event was held at Bishop Hannington Church Centre, 2-4pm on Thursday 7th December.

The children from Goldstone Primary School have a choir named the Gold Tone’s and they sang carols including ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’ and ‘Jingle Bells’. Clients of Home Instead were provided with song sheets to join in and participate.

Home Instead Brighton, Hove and Shoreham provided a raffle for the clients to get involved with and there were a number of different prizes to be won.

The clients had the opportunity to connect and chat

with each other over tea and cakes which were kindly provided by Tesco Hove Westway Express.

Home Instead has also organised the distribution of Christmas cards and letters from children at Brackenbury Primary School to Home Instead clients, to help those isolated this Christmas and bring some joy to the elderly community. The look is a little different, but it is still the same Newsletter. With every new quarter we will be changing the Newsletter colour, so it will be easier to distinguish between the issues. We are also thrilled to introduce a new regular feature to this Newsletter, which is called Patient’s Story. We would like to invite you to contribute to this.

Your story can be about any experience you have had with the practice – good or bad. We will choose a story which will be powerful to share and will help other people, should they find themselves in a similar situation. We will, of course, anonymise your story before sharing it in the Newsletter. PATIENT’S STORY - THE BITE!

One day I discovered I had been bitten on the back of my knee by an unidentified beastie.

Day 2 – 5 I applied tea tree oil with no effect so changed to antihistamine cream.

Day 6 – Bite had turned in to a mini volcano – very red and angry looking.

Day 7 – Took a photo of said bite and showed it to our wonderful neighbourhood pharmacist. He suspected an infection and sent me quick smart to the surgery.

I went to Shoreham Health Centre to see if I could book an appointment with a GP, just as the pharmacist had advised.

The receptionist suggested that I fill out a paper triage form that I completed there and then and I mentioned that I had a photo of the said bite. She said I might need to wait a while before the GP could assess my situation. I waited no more than 10 minutes before the GP called me to look at the photo and diagnose the problem. He issued a prescription immediately to be collected from the original pharmacy.

All done and dusted within one hour – that is the NHS at its best!!

Day 10 Treatment is working, pleased to say.

The Patient Engagement Group (PEG) is an informal group of patients across the four Adur Health Partnership surgeries. We meet, together with health colleagues, every month at the Shoreham Centre in Pond Road. We celebrate things that go well and we work together to make your views count in the running of the surgeries. We make sure that you are informed, consulted and listened to. GP LED TRIAGE GP led triage has been successfully rolled out to Northbourne Medical Centre and Manor Practice, which means that the three main surgeries have the same system of booking our patients for GP appointments.

When you reach your surgery (both in person and over the telephone), you will be asked a series of questions by our Reception team, who will enter your responses into a form on your clinical records. A GP at Reception will triage the form and will advise on what type of appointment needs to be booked for you, or whether there may be another service which would be more appropriate for you like Pharmacies, Urgent Treatment Centres or A&E. The best way to book a GP appointment is by telephone. You can now call us anytime during your surgery opening hours. No need to ring us at 8 am anymore. Actually, you can beat the telephone queues by calling us later in the day.

There are dedicated lines for Nurses appointments and general enquiries. Callers wishing to speak to a member of the Reception team with regard to these, do not need to wait in a telephone queue for a GP appointment.

Our telephone lines are open Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 6.30 pm. Please note that between 12.45 am and 2.00 pm the lines are open for emergencies, and urgent calls only.

UPDATES FROM FURTHER AFIELD

Waiting times in hospital A&E departments are always hitting the headlines. There are 6 "local" hospitals (University Hospitals Sussex) with Emergency Departments. The NHS wants 76% of all A&E attendances to be seen within 4 hours. The average across the 6 local hospitals is about 64%. Whilst this is short of the National target, the local hospitals are improving month on month and are in the top, achieving 35% of similar Trusts in the Region, and within the top 36% nationally. Our most local hospital, Worthing A&E, has around 200 attendances per day, which averages 8 per hour; but of course not evenly spread across 24 hours. Heavy investment will shortly be made to expand the A&E across all local sites, and with an extension of the MIU (Minor Injury Unit) at Worthing.

Did you know that if there are five or more people in a telephone queue a call back option is activated and you will be presented with an option to either hold on the line or request a call back. By requesting a call back you will maintain your position in the queue, as your call will already be logged in the call system.

Please keep your phone on you as our telephone system can only call back once. If you miss the call back, please call us back.

For the last 2 months waiting times for elective surgery have reduced across the local hospitals. For the last 3 months no patient has been waiting more than 104 weeks and the number of 65 (National standard) and 52 week appointments wait is continually falling. The new Community Diagnostic Centre at Southlands has been very busy since the recent opening. Rather than being in an acute hospital environment where emergencies can cause delays, having fixed appointment times for CT, MRI and X-Ray is being very well received.

This year there will be no extra funding from the Government to ease capacity over the winter. At the same time hospitals are expected to achieve 103% of 2019 activity (ie - pre Covid). Heavy investment has been made locally to increase the bed base and employ more nurses.

Please listen to the telephone prompts carefully as the options have recently changed.

Please be aware that AHP surgeries close at 6.30 pm, and the telephone lines also close at this time. If you are waiting in a queue between 6.00 pm and 6.30 pm, or are using the call back option at this time, your call may not be answered on that day. Please call us again on the next working day. If your call cannot wait until then, please call 111 for the NHS 111 service, or 999 if your call is about a life threatening condition.

Steve is a feminist. While Kate likes to be swept off her feet sometimes and loves headspinning romance, Steve is more of a ‘seeking permission for everything’ kind of guy: which is a wild contrast. This, of course, brings up so many difficulties of how on earth do two people who love each other, but are so very different, actually overcome that to ‘live happily ever after’.

Add to that their exes, who are not as over them as they would first appear; then Kate’s traditional and sexist father plus Steve’s feminist campaign bashing mother, and you have some glorious characters who light up the stage.

“How to Date a Feminist” explores the minefield of relationships in the 2020s where male and female roles are sometimes more defined and sometimes less, but does it in a light hearted

and fun way. Is it possible to have equality, and do the antiquated notions of male and female still have a place today? Do they still exist even?

Will love with all the restrictions and expectations of men and women triumph after all? Will they be able to stick together through their struggles and find a balance and a way to live together? Will they decide who goes through the door first?

Samantha Ellis is a writer of plays, books, TV and film, and this play premiered in 2016 with reviewers saying how fun it is and how much they laughed all the way through. Much of her own history and life seems reflected in the play, which makes it real and vibrant as well as very funny. It promises to be a super start to 2024.

SCHOOLNURSERY SCHOOL Adur East Lions delivers Bags GLEBE PRIMARY of Fun this Christmas NURSERY Adur East Lions kicked off their many Christmas activities on 1st December with a festive Bang.. Since November, SCHOOL they had been attending one of their Local Community News

local foodbanks (Shoreham & Adur Community Foodbank) to collect details of all the children supported by the foodbank. Over just a four week period, they had 61 children registered for their new Christmas Project.

Similar to a project run throughout Dunelm stores for the past four years, (which is in fact where the idea came from), the Children (or their parents), were given a specially made gift tag, to be completed by the child with an item they would like (to an approximate £10 value).

The tags were returned to the Lions at the Foodbank, who then purchased and wrapped the gifts. So as not to add any extra burden on the Foodbank, the entire process was managed by Adur East Lions.

Several Members of Adur East Lions Club also helped source and wrap some of the gifts, which included football items (from Tottenham, Brighton and Arsenal Clubs), art supplies, cuddly toys, slipper socks, music boxes, craft kits, lego, play dough, hats/scarves/mittens, smellies, crochet wool and even speciality teas! A donation of 50 Chocolate Reindeers was also obtained from Tesco, and the gift bags contained not only the child's desired gift, but also one of the chocolate Reindeers, together with a festive bag of sweet treats (their parent's permission for the 'sugar-high', having been previously sought). Mini bags of Harribo, Chocolate buttons, Maoam chews, Freddo Frogs, Chocolate lollies and Candy Canes should hopefully have kept them happy for at least a short while!

Friday 1st December saw Lion Claudine handing out most of the sizeable gift bags at the Foodbank and the remainder was given out on Friday 8th December. Pictured with some of the gift bags is the Foodbank Manager Dai Hudd and Lion Claudine.

attending the Foodbank have been very grateful for the extra holiday help. Whilst it took considerable time to find those perfect gifts, mostly due to the fact that in the final week, 19 new children were registered (with only a week to source and wrap all the gifts), it was an amazing way to bring a little relief to some of the many struggling families of the local community. Thank heavens for Amazon Prime's next day delivery!

Adur East also ran a static street collection with their festive Sleigh, at the Southwick Christmas Market, where Santa and his Elf gave out free toys. Sadly, the static collection scheduled for Shoreham Farmer's Market on Saturday 9th December, was cancelled due to adverse weather. This didn't stop Santa spreading his festive joy - he was also at the Lions Santa's Grotto at Manor Cottage in Southwick, followed by five nights taking to the streets of Southwick and Fishersgate. Needless to say, after all these activities, Adur East Members (and Santa), earned themselves a much needed rest over the festive period.

Details

My image this month focus on details which I have observed during my photo walks over the years.

Very often, a small element can be overlooked but when captured can often tell a story by itself.

Two of the images here were taken in Paris at Pere - Lachaise cemetery. The rusted ornate metalwork with the dead ivy leaves entwinedseemed to set the solemn mood of the wider surroundings.

The second from the same location also captures the emotive feel of the place.

Despite being a colour image, it is low key and almost monochromatic. The weathered corners of the stone window frame adds a hint of a complimentary colour and emphasises the texture.

It is also given a variation of tone by the playful shadow from a nearby leafy tree.

My capture, ‘Love’, was another found image, this time a little closer to home at Brighton Marina. I knew I had to photograph this with care and empathy so I carefully selected part of someone’s very personal shrine. The wire fence background gives it a sense of place.

The weatherbeaten teddy bear reveals that it had been there forsome time. He appears to be pointing towards the hanging ‘Love’ sign. I wanted to simplify the scene and capture the emotion which I hope I achieved.

Although some may find the images a little downbeat for their taste, I find them uplifting in

many ways. Whereas so many of my personal photographs depict people, these simply depict human intervention in the world but remind us that it is all too temporary.

PUBLIC APPEAL TO HELP PRESERVE HISTORIC CHURCH AND WAR MEMORIAL Residents and visitors are being urged to support a community crowd-funding campaign to help repair the eastern wall of the Church of the Good Shepherd on Shoreham Beach and its “Cavalry” War Memorial.

The memorial commemorates the lives of the 12 local men who died during the First World War and the seven who perished during World War Two.

Situated between the Widewater Lagoon and Shoreham Beach nature reserves, the Church of the Good Shepherd (CoGS) is 110 years old and has weathered decades of wind and rain.

The wall, on which the memorial hangs, is badly cracked and in need of repair, involving the removal and replacement of the existing rendering and pebble dash. It is currently leaking water.

Associate Vicar, the Rev’d Jane Bartlett, said: “We are hoping that, as a valuable landmark building at the heart of the Shoreham Beach community, residents may be willing to contribute to the repair work of the memorial wall.

“It will cost £6,000 and, as a church, we get no central funding and rely completely on people’s generosity and good will.”

Built in 1913, the King’s Walk church was almost demolished during the dark days of 1940 when all buildings on Shoreham Beach were knocked down to protect against the threat of Nazi invasion.

After coming across a group of soldiers praying in the church, the officer in charge of demolition recognised its spiritual importance and the landmark was saved.

Today, the CoGS and its hall is a valued and important community facility, widely used by other local organisations and groups. On

: Barry Ward (Treasurer), Rev. Jane Bartlett (Associate Vicar), Christine Hundertpfund (Church member), Dave Worrall (Stewardship Officer), Louise Durrant (PCC member).

Sundays, the church often welcomes 100 members and visitors, attending its two or three services.

Rev'd Jane added: “This remarkable building is open daily to visitors, from 9am to 5pm, and our visitors’ book has numerous references to the peace and comfort found within its walls.

It’s a perfect place for prayer and meditation.

“If you can support our appeal, it will help us to preserve an important historical building, community space and spiritual home for many local people.”

Olympian still leads the fleet aged 88 Silver medallist is top participant at Shoreham Sailing Club A grandfather and Olympic medallist has proved that sailing really can be a sport for life after topping the participation leaderboard at his local sailing club. ( Alan with his Olympic medal) Alan Warren, who won a silver medal with David Hunt in the Tempest at the Munich 1972 Games, now sails with his grandson Will Carroll as his crew.

The family pairing topped Shoreham Sailing Club’s participation leaderboard completing 33 races this year in their Merlin, and plan to continue their racing streak at Chichester Yacht Club’s Snowflake series.

Alan said: “I have always been very competitive, way back I was a mad car driver, but fortunately I had the sense to resist a motorbike or I would not have lived long. I was bad enough on a bicycle.

“I then discovered dinghy racing where all your efforts were channelled into going as fast as possible and winning. It suited me fine.

“Well, now my age has caught up with me,” continued Alan, who turns 89 later this month, “but there is still a glimmer of my old self left and once I get back in the boat, I can accomplish something of my old self despite my age, so I haven’t stopped.

“Fortunately, I have my grandson as a crew (I call him my carer) and he knows my shortcomings.

I am no longer am expected to haul the rescue boats up the slipway.”

Will said: “I have been sailing with him for almost 18 years. He’s always been keen to rush out in

any conditions and he still has a stable hand in the windiest conditions.

“In the beginning, he was often dragging me around and telling me what to do, but in recent years the roles have somewhat reversed. He calls me the mechanic in the boat because I do everything else while he focuses on steering and

playing the main sail.

“During Covid, he was finding that he was getting unfit so instead of just going for a long walk he decided to start his Olympic training again, but jumped straight into it and did his back in. He was OK and we all laughed about it.”

So there we have it, Alan Warren, an inspiration to us all. We wished Alan a happy 89th birthday on 13 December.

The Arts Society Steyning January talk Charles Dickens – The Man & His Life Through His Characters A talk by Bertie Pearce Monday 8 January 2024 at 10am The Steyning Centre, Fletchers Croft, Steyning BN44 3XZ Charles Dickens brought into the world a staggering array of wonderful characters – orphans, starving children, misers, murderers and abusive school teachers among them.

Mr Micawber, Fagin and Abel Magwitch, for example, remain in one’s literary psyche long after the books are put down. Largely self-educated, Dickens became the greatest writer of his age producing 15 major novels and countless short stories and articles. In this lecture Bertie looks at the life and places of Dickens through his characters. The talk is interspersed with readings of his works.

Bertie has a BA (Hons) in Drama from Manchester University, and a Diploma Internationale from the École Internationale du Théâtre, Jacques Lecoq. A member of the Inner Magic Circle, with Gold Star, Bertie has toured the world with a magic cabaret show and a one man show entitled All Aboard. He has written articles for newspapers and magazines on entertainment and theatre.

Community football facility to be redeveloped in Southwick

Plans to bring community football back to one of the oldest grounds in Sussex have been approved by Adur District Council’s planning committee.

RMF is backed by Russell Martin, a former professional footballer for Norwich City, Rangers and Scotland, who is the current manager of Southampton FC. The foundation is a not-for-profit organisation which was created by Mr Martin to give something back to the area where he was born and raised.

Old Barn Way, the former ground of Southwick Football Club, will be redeveloped into a modern-day footballing facility and community space by Russell Martin Foundation (RMF).

As owner of the site, we released £50,000 of funding from developers so that RMF could carry out urgent safety works to the facility, allowing football to be played at the ground again in the short-term.

Its application features a new clubhouse and fullsize 3G football pitch with replacement floodlights and a spectator stand for up to 56 people to encourage local families and visitors to watch players of all ages in action.

Wanting to transform the site and build a new community clubhouse, RMF asked for permission to demolish the existing derelict building which had been used by Southwick Football Club. However, the site needed to become operational again before the charity could submit a planning application to redevelop the facility.

As well as hosting changing rooms, a bar and kitchen, the single-storey clubhouse will be a flexible space for a variety of education and health improvement programmes.

The plans include eight-metre-high netting at the southern and eastern boundaries of the pitch to protect the railway line and residents from being disturbed. A four-and-a-half metre-high fence is also included around the perimeter of the pitch.

The application has been approved by Adur’s planning committee, pending confirmation of drainage details.

“The plans for the new clubhouse and third-generation football pitch are really exciting. I hope it won’t be long until locals can benefit from the site’s redevelopment.”

Southwick Methodist Church

A Southwick church has a wonderful festive tree thanks to the intervention of a Sussex children’s charity and the donation by a local garden centre.

The Methodist church in Manor Hall Road will be busy decorating its huge, traditional Christmas tree given by nearby Mayberry Garden Centre which is part of the family-run Tates of Sussex group.

The Budding Foundation, which works to help children in need across Sussex added to the haul with a donation of large, white pebbles.

These will be used by children in the church family to paint as part of their nativity project.

The church’s Children and Families’ worker, Mandy Ford collected the goodies from the charity’s founder, Clive Gravett. Clive said: “We are delighted to help the community church and wish them well with their nativity activities.”
