Have you made a Will or is it up to date? IF you die without a Will it can be a nightmare for those you leave behind and your estate may not pass to those you wished to benefit. Your estate would pass in accordance with the Intestacy Rules, which set out who will be entitled to inherit. If you have no living relatives and do not have a Will, your estate will pass to the Crown.
Why make a Will A Will sets out who is to benefit from your money, property and possessions (your estate) after your death. There are many good reasons to make a Will including:
• You can decide what happens to your estate when you die.
• You may want to provide for your partner - some
people think that after they have been living with their partner for a couple of years, they become ‘common law’ spouses with the same rights as married couples/ civil partners. This is not the case.
• You can appoint guardians for any children under the age of 18.
• If you have children from a previous relationship, you
can ensure that those children also benefit from your estate, as well as providing for your partner or spouse and any other children.
• You can make sure you don’t pay more Inheritance Tax than is necessary.
• You can decide what should happen to pets. • Property owned as ‘Joint tenants’ automatically passes
to the surviving co-owner and you may want your share to pass to someone else instead, or pass it into a trust.
Although it is possible to write a Will yourself, it is advisable to use a qualified lawyer. Wills are legal documents and small errors can cause huge problems. There are various legal formalities that need to be followed and if these are not followed correctly, your Will may not be valid. Problems can not only be very costly but may also mean that your wishes are not met. A lawyer will be able to point out things that you may not have even considered and may be able to mitigate Inheritance Tax and potential care home costs.
Why Review your existing Will If you already have a Will, you should review it regularly to make sure it still reflects your wishes. Reasons to review your Will may include: the arrival of new children/grandchildren; the death of a beneficiary, executor, trustee or guardian; a change in your financial circumstances or a change in the law or tax rules. Many people don’t realise that entering into a marriage or civil partnership automatically revokes an existing Will (unless expressly made in contemplation of the marriage/civil partnership) and so you may think you have a valid will when in fact, you do not. Local Ropetackle Centre
Tyneside heroes set to bring the house down at Adur’s flagship venue LINDISFARNE | Friday 3rd November | 8pm Lindisfarne are lighting up Ropetackle’s autumn/winter programme with a sold out concert this November. The Tyneside folk-rock pioneers first grabbed the attention of the country in 1970 with their debut album Nicely Out of Tune. There followed a string of memorable albums and evergreen classics including Meet Me on the Corner, We Can Swing Together, Fog On The Tyne, Lady Eleanor and Run For Home. In 2023 and in top form, the band is pleased to return with a series of UK concerts presented by a classic five-piece line up of long-time members, fronted by original founder-member Rod Clements on vocals, mandolin, fiddle and slide guitar. They will recall a memorable period of live shows focussed on the 1977 release of live LP ‘Magic in The Air’. With a repertoire of unforgettable songs and a reputation for live performance second to none, LINDISFARNE’s power to galvanise festival and concert audiences remains undimmed and is guaranteed to get the crowd on its feet and singing along.
Rod said: “Lindisfarne are delighted to be returning to the Ropetackle, which we know from previous visits to be a friendly and wellrun venue with a fabulous audience thrown in! It’s great to know that our music is so much appreciated on the south coast. You’re doing a great job of supporting live entertainment and we’re proud to be part of that – see you in November!”

Changing Chalk
connecting nature, people and heritage “We’re offering exciting funding opportunities to local Sussex organisations who want to make a difference to their community and the South Downs, says Changing Chalk lead, Sam Page. Sussex groups from Shoreham to Eastbourne can now apply for grants to fund projects that will make a real difference to their local communities, thanks to Changing Chalk’s Community Grants Scheme. The scheme, run by the National Trust and funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, supports grassroots community-led initiatives that will help to restore lost habitats, bring local histories to life, and provide new experiences in the outdoors. With a total of £150,000 to award over three years, there are grants of up to £5,000 available for community projects and up to £10,000 available for projects focusing on restoring the chalk grassland of the Downs, a priority for Changing Chalk.
Sam Page, who leads Changing Chalk for the National Trust, comments: “The fragile chalk grassland of the South Downs is home to a wonderful array of beautiful yet threatened plants, butterflies and other wildlife. If this landscape is going to have a future, it’s vital that local people feel it’s theirs to enjoy and want to play a part in looking after it. That’s why we’re supporting local organisations who share our passion and want to make a difference to their community with this grant scheme.
The Grow Project is one such group who have already successfully applied for funding through the Changing Chalk Community Grants Scheme. As a result of the grant they can now support more adults with poor mental health by connecting them with nature to improve their wellbeing. Grow Project’s director, Jo Wren commented: ‘We were delighted to get one of the first grants from the Changing Chalk Community Grants Scheme. The funding has meant we can now spread our
work beyond Brighton and Hove into areas like Shoreham and Southwick, something we’ve been wanting to do for some time. Other previously successful applications included projects to bring the history and heritage of the South Downs alive, including wellbeing walks, landscape study days, tools for volunteers, and chalk downland wildflower seed generation.
Community groups, charities, local organisations, and other non-profit making organisations such as social enterprises or community interest companies, can apply for these grants. Schools, town councils and parish councils can also apply, as long as their project demonstrates wider community involvement and benefit. The deadline for applications is 5 November, but groups with larger chalk grassland habitat conservation projects in mind can submit an Expression of Interest at any time for an award of up to £10,000.

Worthing Theatres and Museum announce exhibition celebrating the creativity of Ukrainian artists in West Sussex Worthing Theatres and Museum are thrilled to be working with the Worthing Ukrainian Friends’ Network to present - Ukrainian Renaissance: art, craft and history - a brand new exhibition celebrating the diverse creativity of Ukrainian refugees in West Sussex.
The exhibition will be on display in Worthing Museum’s Studio Gallery from Saturday 23 September 2023 to Sunday 11 February 2024. It has been a year since the UK and West Sussex welcomed Ukrainians who fled to the British shores to find safety and opportunities to build new lives. With the arrival of Ukrainian refugees came a wealth of creativity to the area which greatly enhances the local community. The group of artists, with differing styles, mediums and backgrounds, will represent the best Ukraine has to offer. The exhibition will celebrate Ukrainines rich and diverse cultural contribution to European culture over more than a thousand years of history. There will be a free Ukrainian Culture Day at the museum on Saturday 25 November 2023. The day, supported by The Worthing Lions, will offer an insight into Ukrainian traditions, arts and crafts. There will be the opportunity to meet some of the artists, free workshops (booking required as places are limited) and a short film about Borsch! After this choirs, Kolo and Ukrainian Voices will perform and there will be a variety of activities which relate to Ukrainian cultural traditions
The exhibition and Ukrainian Culture Day have been organised with the help of the charity Worthing Ukrainian Friends’ Network. Exhibition organiser Yaroslava Matvieienko says ‘As artists, we are grateful for the opportunity to show the local community the heritage and diversity of Ukrainian art and culture. Every one of us is now a cultural diplomat. We aim our mission of delivering our culture and art to the world to be successful.’ Worthing Ukrainian Friends’ Network set up in April 2022 by local activist and philanthropist Mike Tyler with the help of local community leaders to help Ukrainian refugees settle and integrate into their new life in the UK. The organisation aims to support all Ukrainians around in and around Worthing. Ukrainian Renaissance: art, craft and history is on display in Worthing Museum’s Studio Gallery from Saturday 23 September 2023 to Sunday 11 February 2024. FINANCIAL PLANNING, LIKE SPACE EXPLORATION, NEEDS CAREFUL MANAGEMENT AFTER SUCCESS Space exploration is pushing boundaries. Yet, like Retirees may face two challenges that financial planning could help. financial planning, the period after reaching a goal requires just as much attention as those that 1. Managing assets to ensure they last for the rest of your life: As you’ll often be responsible for garner coverage. On 23 August 2023, India celebrated its third lunar exploration mission as Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram Lander successfully reached the south pole of the moon. It’s the first time the feat has ever been accomplished. THE PERIOD AFTER REACHING A MILESTONE CAN BE JUST AS CHALLENGING Successfully launching a spacecraft is one thing, but bringing it safely back to Earth is another challenge. Spacecraft re-entry is difficult for numerous reasons. While exciting launches grab attention, just as much work goes into preparing for the period after the milestone event. Similarly, while you may celebrate reaching a financial goal, your decisions after could be just as important. When you’re working towards something, you’ll often have a clear plan to achieve it. For financial goals, it could be contributing a certain amount each month to your pension or investment portfolio. Once you reach your goal, a plan is still important, but you may need a very different strategy and approach. Take retirement as an example. You may have saved diligently during your career to retire with enough assets to be financially comfortable and enjoy the next chapter of your life. While you have the assets to live the retirement you want, without a plan, your goals could still go awry. Marlborough House, 102-110 High St, Shoreham-by-Sea BN43 5DB T. 01273 774855 E. shoreham@pembrokefs.co.uk W. www.pembrokefinancial.co.uk
creating an income from your pension, as well as deciding how to use other assets, you might need to consider how to manage withdrawals to ensure you don’t spend too much too soon. You may also need to weigh up other areas that could affect your wealth, such as investment returns, inflation, or tax liability. 2. Changing your mindset: It’s not just your financial strategy that might need to change when you retire, but your attitude to money too. After decades of putting money carefully to one side, it can be difficult to start depleting some of the assets you’ve built up. You might even be afraid to spend some of the money – what would happen if you faced a financial shock? Or could you run out during your lifetime? WE COULD HELP YOU CREATE A PLAN THAT GOES BEYOND GOALS Your aspirations are an incredibly important part of a financial plan, but so is the period that comes after them. Working with a financial planner could help you create a plan that incorporates goals and goes beyond these milestones to build long-term security.

Local Historian
The Ship Canal From Shoreham To London (Part 2) It was reported by the international press on the 15th November 1907, ‘that London had grown too big for the Thames.’ This conclusion had been reached because two huge steam turbine powered ocean liners had failed to get into any dock in London. as there had not been enough depth of water in the river for them to pass.
The then depth available to river traffic was 24 feet at low tide between the Albert Dock in the city and Gravesend. The ships that were under construction at the time in London shipyards such as Woolwich were much larger than their predecessors. Engineers thought they would require a safety margin of a projected depth of up to 30 feet of water to avoid running aground in the Thames. Dredging to this depth in London would have burst the existing subways and tunnels underneath the river and undermined the riverbanks causing the mass destruction of property. The Thames Conservancy Engineer Mr C. J. More pointed this out.
It was reported that ‘adventurous and ingenious spirits’ proposed to avoid the use of the Thames entirely by the creation of a new waterway from the English Channel to London. The proposal was quoted as, ‘A steamship from let us say New Zealand has come to the channel as far as Shoreham, the Sussex port 6 miles west of Brighton, there still remains a sea journey of 300 miles, and that is the most hazardous and often the most difficult length of the entire voyage round the world before the vessel can get up to London. New Shoreham is only distant from London about 47 miles as the crow flies, and the intervening country is, as a rule fairly flat. The promoters contend that the only engineering difficulty at all is the range of hills near Dorking, and they contend that in view of the importance of the scheme this would be a mere a trifle, and at the worst would be a mere question of outlay.’ The Shoreham to London Ship Canal was to be 47 miles long, 300 feet wide and 40 feet in depth. The canal would be lit by electricity, allowing for ships to travel day and night and it was hoped the lights would be large and bright enough to penetrate through fog. As mentioned in the previous article it was proposed the canal would
allow larger ships to be built and so increase the tonnage of shipping. It was also planned for the Royal Navy to base it battleships there, to counter any French or German invasion.
It was believed mass unemployment in London could be ended through further industrialisation of the entire length of the canal down to the Shoreham coastline. Mr More’s response was quoted as characterising the idea as ‘feasible enough if the money be spent; but it would cost a tremendous amount, and the engineering difficulties of the Dorking Hills would be far greater than the proposers seem to think. It is a wild idea, certainly but not an impossible one. As I said, it is feasible enough. But where is the money to come from? So that there is where the matter stands at present, but I do not think we have heard the last of the scheme. London will not readily consent to take a back seat if only as a port.’ If the scheme had gone ahead, southern railway companies, Shoreham as a coastal town and its local industries could have been bankrupted, as no ship would have needed to unload cargo onto rail freight there bound for London. The estimated cost of the project was £30 billion, which was an enormous sum of money for the time. It was eventually decided it would be cheaper to overcome the engineering problems of dredging the Thames. The river and its estuary were subsequently dredged from the coast to Gravesend. Judy Upton

Lions Going the Extra Mile
Two Members of Adur East Lions are raising money to tackle the fight against Cancer, can you help? Lion Claudine Rogers recently completed an epic challenge for Brain Tumour Research to cycle 274 miles in August. Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. Brain Tumour Research is committed to establishing a network of Centres of Excellence across the UK, pushing the boundaries of knowledge about brain tumours, making ground-breaking discoveries and bringing hope to patients diagnosed with these cancers. Despite having her own challenging health conditions, Claudine completed the challenge in just 18 days through a combination of (many) cycles along the seafront, up the Adur River and also cycling on a static bike in her living room (mainly due to adverse weather and developing a chest infection). Claudine ended her cycle on the Indy Circuit at Brands Hatch, participating in Ebbsfleet & Northfeet Lions Clubs two hour ‘Cycle Brands Hatch’ event. Anyone wishing to learn more about her cycle, or donate, can find further details by searching the Lions Giving website at https://www.lionsgiving.
co.uk/news/clocking-up-the-miles-for-brain-tumourresearch Adur East Lion President, Lion David Sluys, is also trying to raise funds by participating (for the third time) in the LIBRA 10k run in East Grinstead on Sunday, 1st October. A familiar face running around Shoreham, David is an experienced runner and is also the Lions South East District Childhood Cancer Officer. LIBRA raises money for the Haematology Department at Kings College, London. David is keen to have other runners join him to help raise as much as possible, ensuring new and improved treatments for blood disorders can be developed. The race has previously been rated the UK’s “Best Race for Beginners” in Runner’s World. The entry fee is £20 and anyone interested should contact David on 07712 224446. The Arts Society Steyning October talk Monday 09 October 2023 at 10am All Singing, All Dancing Shakespeare A Talk by Sarah Lenton
The Steyning Centre, Fletchers Croft, Steyning BN44 3XZ Shakespeare without words? Composers and choreographers are always using Shakespeare as a springboard, but only the greatest have pulled it off. Amongst that band are Verdi, Berlioz, Britten, Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan with their versions of Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and Midsummer Night’s Dream. Well-meaning casualties are Rossini, Auber and Bellini. What’s the difference? Sarah will be exploring this using clips from the operas and ballets, and first hand accounts from the artists themselves. Sarah Lenton has spent her working life in the theatre. Her principal employers are the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera
and Garsington Opera. She writes programme articles, radio and play scripts, gives lectures and broadcasts regularly for BBC Radios 3 and 4. She is also a cartoonist. Free to members; visitors £10 donation.

ROPETACKLE CINEMA presents ROPETACKLE FILM CLUB SEASON 11 The Film Club continues its 11th season on 12th October with the multi Oscar winning Everything Everywhere All At Once. Films are shown each month from September 2023 to June 2024, so nine remaining, all for just £35. The movies have been specially chosen after suggestions made by and voted on by club members. This year’s selection ranges from a 1948 Hollywood classic to three 2023 Oscar nominations, including Everything Everywhere All At Once, and also featuring four brilliant foreign language offerings. Ask for an application form at the Box Office or join online at https://ropetacklecentre.co.uk/film-club/, where you can find full details as well. A RELAXED VIEWING FILM open to all SOME LIKE IT HOT Two Chicago musicians need to get out of town in a hurry - they join an all-girl band as Josephine and Daphne and head to Florida. With Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe in maybe the best comedy of all time? Relaxed Viewing films are open to everyone, but the softer lighting and relaxed layout make them particularly suitable for people with memory loss or dementia. Kindly sponsored by Sussex Community Foundation. Cert 12A duration 121 mins. Includes subtitles. Monday 16th October, 2.00 pm. Tickets available from Box Office or on-line, £5. A FAMILY FILM PUSS IN BOOTS - THE LAST WISH Poor old Puss has used up eight of his nine lives and now he’s a shadow of the cat that used to thrive, residing in a home - but Goldilocks and her three bears need the cat’s claws to get a map that’s clasped in Jack Horner’s big paw. As usual, Antonio Banderas voices Puss, and listen out for Olivia Colman and Ray Winstone as well. Cert PG, duration 98 mins. Animation. Tuesday 24th October, 2.00 pm. Tickets available from Box Office or on-line, £4. A MATINEE FILM THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY An ordinary man passes through life on the sidelines until the day he goes to post a letter and just keeps walking. This very well-crafted adaptation of Rachel Joyce’s novel is propelled expertly by Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton. It’s a movie that celebrates everyday joys and human connection - a non-religious pilgrim story about the power of hope and faith. Cert 12A, duration 108 mins. Tuesday 31st October, 2.00 pm. Tickets available from Box Office or on-line. £5 An EXHIBITION ON SCREEN KLIMT AND THE KISS The Kiss by Gustav Klimt is one of the most recognised and reproduced paintings in the world. Painted
in Vienna around 1908, the evocative image of an unknown embracing couple has captivated viewers with its mystery, sensuality and dazzling materials ever since it was created. But just what lies behind the appeal of the painting – and just who was the artist that created it? A film by Exhibition on Screen. Duration 90 mins. Wednesday 8th November, 7.30 pm. Tickets available from Box Office or on-line. £12.
A RELAXED VIEWING FILM open to all THE GRADUATE Relaxed Viewing films are open to everyone, but the softer lighting and relaxed layout make them particularly suitable for people with memory loss or dementia. College graduate Benjamin (Dustin Hoffman) is trapped into an affair with Mrs Robinson (Anne Bancroft), the wife of his father’s business partner, and then finds himself falling in love with her teenage daughter. Unforgettable music by Simon and Garfunkel. Cert 12A duration 106 mins. Includes subtitles. Monday 20th November, 2.00 pm. Tickets available from Box Office or on-line, £5.

ADUR HEALTH PARTNERSHIP
NEWSLETTER
Produced in co-operation with Patient Engagement Group A warm welcome to the fifth issue of your Newsletter, which is produced in co-operation with the Adur Health Partnership’s Patients Engagement Group. For more information on this group, please see the article below. July 2023 marked a year since the Friends and Family Test (FFT) was relaunched following the Covid-19 pandemic. FFT is an important tool that enables everyone who uses NHS services to give their feedback. Adur Health Partnership usually asks for this feedback by sending our patients a text message 24 hours after their appointment. However, patients can also fill in a FFT feedback form available from our waiting rooms or by speaking to a member of the AHP team. The feedback that patients give us via FFT is anonymous. Analysing the feedback helps us recognise what is working well and what can be improved. Adur Health Partnership received 2,967 FFT responses between July 2022 and June 2023, where our patients said that our services were: Very good 2,310 responses 77.9% Good 416 responses 14.0% Neither good nor poor 102 responses 3.4% Poor 66 responses 2.2% Very poor 49 responses 1.7% Did not know 24 responses 0.8% These results mean that between July 2022 and June 2023 over 91% of patients were happy with the service we provided. Thank you very much for your feedback. It really means a lot to us. Did you know that you can also leave a comment, raise a complaint or give us a compliment in person at our surgeries, over the phone, in writing to us (letter or email) or via our new website? www.adurhealthpartnership.co.uk UPDATES FROM FURTHER AFIELD
PATIENT ENGAGEMENT GROUP
The Louisa Martindale Building at Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton has now fully opened. All patients are now in the new building. 65% of patients are now in single rooms and the remainder in 4 bed bays. All beds have views out to the sea.
The Patient Engagement Group (PEG) is an informal group of patients across the four Adur Health Partnership surgeries. We meet, together with health colleagues, every month at the Shoreham Centre in Pond Road. We celebrate things that go well and we work together to make your views count in the running of the surgeries. We make sure that you are informed, consulted and listened to. Everyone is welcome at our meetings. For further details please email us at sxicbws.ahp.peg@nhs.net or visit the AHP website for more information and the dates of our meetings.
Southlands Community Diagnostics Centre is on track to be open from October 2023 onwards. Patients with appointments for MRI, CT or X-Rays will no longer be affected by emergency requirements within the hospitals. During the year 2022/23 University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust saw 670,000 referrals for care, 1,200,000 outpatient appointments, undertook 134,000 operations and procedures, gave birth to 8300 babies, saw 347,000 patients in A&E, transferred 107,000 patients to wards and cared for 1,300 patients with Covid. Referrals for cancer for 74.3% of patients were diagnosed or ruled out within 28 days. Over 5,000 patients started a cancer pathway. 63% of attendances at A&E were seen and discharged within 4 hours.

SUMMER 2023
SIDE 2
UPDATES FROM FURTHER AFIELD These updates are from University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (previously Western Sussex Hospitals when it became a Foundation Trust) and relate to what is happening at our local hospitals, which AHP's patients are often referred to for secondary assessments or treatments. Much development has been taking place across all 7 hospitals within the Trust, but the major difference is the construction of the Louisa Martindale Building at Royal Sussex County Hospital. This is now nearing completion and patients will be moved into the new building in the next couple of months. There is far too much to describe in this newsletter, but anyone who is interested can visit the Trust's website for the latest information https://www.uhsussex.nhs.uk/about/trust/improvement-projects/lmb/ During the last few months much concern has been shown about the NHS plan to close stroke services at Worthing Hospital and move the Acute Stroke Unit to St Richards Hospital in Chichester. A twelve week public consultation took place where everyone had a chance to express their views. More than 1000 people responded and these will be taken into account when decisions are made later this year. More details on the plan are available on https://www.uhsussex.nhs.uk/news/more-than-1000-stroke-survey-responses-received/ Closer to home is the development of the Southlands Site. Aside from the excellent eye clinic many other treatments and therapies already take place at Southlands, as well as two operating theatres carrying out day surgery. Many people are surprised to hear that dermatological treatments take place as well as cardio physiotherapy, occupational therapy, blood tests and many clinics. Plans to develop a new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Southlands Hospital in Shoreham-by-Sea are continuing, with a new facility scheduled to open in the Autumn 2023. The CDC is designed to offer efficient and more local access to MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and CT (Computerised Tomography) scanners, as well as a host of other diagnostic specialist equipment and expertise. Separated from emergency care provided in other nearby hospitals, planned imaging and diagnostic services at Southlands will be less affected by urgent requests from Emergency Departments, resulting in less disruption to patient appointments and procedures. The development of the new department within the hospital will replace the temporary mobile MRI and CT scanners where space and waiting areas are very limited and the X-Ray department will be fully refurbished.
WATCH OUT FOR TICK BITES These are becoming more common, particularly in countryside areas. Minimise the risk - apply insect repellant prior to walking in high risk areas and use footpaths rather than walk through long grass and foliage. Cover your skin where possible, wear full length trousers rather than shorts and wear long sleeved tops. Tuck clothes in. Wear socks. Always check yourself and others, including dogs, for ticks after walking in high risk countryside. If you find a tick on skin remove with fine tweezers ensuring that the whole insect is removed. If you are bitten - remove the tick including its head, clean the site with soapy water and use a cold compress and/or elevation of limb to reduce swelling and pain. Apply antihistamine cream or take antihistamine tablets as directed. Tick bites may, but not always, cause itching and swelling. Transmission of Lyme Disease Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection that can lead to the inflammation of joints and neurological problems. This happens rarely but it is crucial that you are aware of the symptoms and seek immediate medical help. Symptoms of the disease include a rash around the site of the bite that is oval in shape and flu like symptoms. For more information, please visit the NHS website.

Find peace of mind through contingency planning anyone helping you is aware that someone depends on you, as you may be unable to tell them yourself.
Do you provide unpaid care for a friend or family member? If so, have you thought about contingency planning in case you become unexpectedly unable to provide that care? Putting a contingency plan in place and sharing it with others can give you and your loved one peace of mind, knowing they will continue to receive the support they need even if circumstances suddenly change.
Carers Support West Sussex – a charity that works closely with West Sussex County Council – offers unpaid carers information and guidance along with emotional and practical support. You can register free with Carers Support West Sussex on its website www.carerssupport. org.uk, where you can also find useful tips for developing a contingency plan. These include carrying a carers emergency contact card when you are out and about. This will ensure that, in the event of an emergency involving yourself,
Eurfron Jones and her husband Malcolm are among those who have benefitted from developing a contingency plan after they registered with Carers Support West Sussex. Ms Jones said: “I’d really encourage other carers who don’t have plans in place to think about it. I remember the conversation I had with Carers Support West Sussex when they asked ‘Have you thought about what might happen should anything happen to you?’. It had never entered my head that anything would happen to me. “I think it’s really important that people know that I’m a carer, particularly in the circumstances that

Holiday in Rhodes
I’m sure that you saw the horrendous wildfires in Greece this Summer. We had booked a holiday in Rhodes which was badly affected.
Fortunately for us we were about 30 miles north of the nearest fires and the worst thing that we suffered were a few power cuts. I urge you to seek out the work of Gideon Mendel who photographs the aftermath of climate disasters. His images on Rhodes are extraordinary. Google his images or find him on Instagram.
I’m certainly not brave enough to tackle such subjects so here, for light relief, are three street photographs that I captured during my holiday there. The main image is the street portrait painter, his work displayed alongside him, sitting in the heat under the large parasol whilst awaiting his next commission. The world goes on around him as he scrolls through his phone to pass the time. This image, in my opinion, needs to be in colour to tell the full story whilst my other image, due to the strong, directional lighting, works best in monochrome. The diagonal shadows add drama to the scene. The wall has round windows so I was pleased to capture a foreground figure carrying a large, round brimmed hat. It wasn’t set up, it was patience ( I waited for a suitable figure to pass the back-
ground)and pure luck. This is an oft used technique for me, I identify a promising background and then wait for something to happen in the foreground. For me, this needs to be something or someone that ‘matches’ or compliments the background perhaps by colour or shape. Steve Boyle www.instagram.com/shoreham_steve

Taking it slow… Amanda Munday (MA, UKCP, ACPP), psychotherapist at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, explains a gentle and profound therapeutic process, linking mind and body. Core process psychotherapy (CPP) is a mindfulness-based approach to therapy and emphasises a deep, ongoing awareness of body and mind processes. Developing this awareness involves learning how to cultivate a state of mindfulness, a sense of slowing down. This allows the client to gently attend to their internal world without judgment, so that they are more likely to notice their embodied experience - feelings, emotions and sensations. In learning to focus attention inward, they begin to recognise how things are for them in the moment. Through this contemplative approach, clients can discover and explore the historical roots of their difficulties with an attitude of gentle curiosity and gain a clearer sense of who they are. As they process this information in the present, they can begin to let go of old and limiting habits and beliefs, and approach life with greater creativity and flexibility.
CPP draws heavily on Buddhist principles and practices, such as mindfulness, compassion, and unconditional acceptance – and is based on an assumption that at the core of every human being is an intrinsic state of health and freedom. This "core state" is unconditioned and ever-present, regardless of our life circumstances. However, as we grow and shape our personality from a young age, this inherent health and freedom can become obscured. As adults, we tend to relate to ourselves and the world in habitual ways, repeating learned patterns of behaviour, attitudes, and tendencies, many of which are influenced by our past experiences and relationships. These aspects of ourselves very often lie outside of our conscious awareness. This movement away from our "core state" toward our personality shape is referred to as our "core process”. Some clients engage in CPP to learn more
about themselves and enhance their potential for growth. However, CPP is also used to work with a wide range of specific conditions including depression, anxiety, stress, self-esteem issues, relationship difficulties, PTSD, anger issues and grief/loss. For more information or an appointment, please contact Amanda at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre on 01273 567654 www. shorehamosteo.co.uk

Tell-Tail Signs of Delighted Dogs As dog owners, we obsess over our animals and constantly monitor moods in order to ensure they are happy and content. While most of the signs of a perfectly at-peace pooch are obvious, it pays to know when our four-legged friends are at their most sumptuously soothed. Of all the creatures in our kingdom, dogs are probably one of the easiest to understand. They can express sadness, irritation and need, yet it is in the pursuit of happiness that they are at their most animated and loveable. Comfort For a dog to be happy, it must be comfortable in your presence, and this playfulness comes through in the way they request your time and attention. So if they push themselves towards your hand when you’re reaching out to stroke them, it’s a key indicator they like being in your company.
Stance Happiness can also be seen in a dog that displays looseness in its shoulders, perhaps accompanied by soft and inviting eyes. And of course we’ve all seen dogs splayed out, lying on their backs – this is perhaps the ultimate indicator of a chilled out four-legged friend. For a more subtle display of contentment, a dog that stretches front legs out and raises the hind legs shows he is ready for engagement and entertainment. Interaction When your dog is itching for you to interact with him in a good-humoured way he will usually bow his head, intimating a desire to play. Put into words, it’s a case of, “come on, let’s go!”. And of course, a wagging tail and excited tongue is perfect indication that a dog wants a ball, stick or toy to be launched.
Bark Most high-pitched barks are synonymous with a dog who is happy, although the vocal range of some breeds is naturally high anyway. That shouldn’t rule out a canine who expresses satisfaction with a low bark, but this will usually be gurgled and drawn out, perhaps changing tone or losing intensity at the end. Attention When a dog’s ears are pricked, something has got their attention. It could be a noise or a sudden movement, and their curiosity will want to hunt out the mystery. Individuality Of course, dogs have personalities and their own uniqueness, with different breeds displaying their own idiosyncrasies and quirks. Only you, as an owner, will know your animal’s mannerisms best, and this is the joy of owning an animal and getting to know them.

Shaping the future of children positively Every child deserves access to tools to learn effectively and achieve the pass grades to progress beyond primary and secondary levels of education. An effective way to help pupils pass their SATs and GCSEs is by providing additional academic help outside the classroom - tailored to fill their learning gaps. However, at an average of £25 an hour across England and £40 in London, not every child can afford private tutoring.
One in four children in the classroom is disadvantaged (eligible for free school meals, or meeting other exceptions criteria). The attainment gap between them and their non-disadvantaged peers is at its widest in ten years, worsened by the pandemic. Many children from low-income families are unable to access additional help to pass their grades and go on to further education or employment. With your

support, we can ensure the door to opportunity is open for all children, no matter their background. We work with schools to identify pupils from low-income families with learning needs. Our diverse pool of volunteers, from age 18 to 84, provides support to these pupils in English and maths, using our tutor workbooks (with the answers!). Join us in our mission to close the attainment gap by volunteering, either in person or online, for one hour a week. Previous teaching experience is not required to volunteer; we provide training and all the resources you need. We’ve transformed the outcomes of thousands of disadvantaged children across the UK, and can do more with your help. Volunteer with Action Tutoring today.
