Lions Going the Extra Mile

Two Members of Adur East Lions are raising money to tackle the fight against Cancer, can you help?

Lion Claudine Rogers recently completed an epic challenge for Brain Tumour Research to cycle 274 miles in August. Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. Brain Tumour Research is committed to establishing a network of Centres of Excellence across the UK, pushing the boundaries of knowledge about brain tumours, making ground-breaking discoveries and bringing hope to patients diagnosed with these cancers.

Despite having her own challenging health conditions, Claudine completed the challenge in just 18 days through a combination of (many) cycles along the seafront, up the Adur River and also cycling on a static bike in her living room (mainly due to adverse weather and developing a chest infection). Claudine ended her cycle on the Indy Circuit at Brands Hatch, participating in Ebbsfleet & Northfeet Lions Clubs two hour ‘Cycle Brands Hatch’ event. Anyone wishing to learn more about her cycle, or donate, can find further details by searching the Lions Giving website at https://www.lionsgiving.

Adur East Lion President, Lion David Sluys, is also trying to raise funds by participating (for the third time) in the LIBRA 10k run in East Grinstead on Sunday, 1st October. A familiar face running around Shoreham, David is an experienced runner and is also the Lions South East District Childhood Cancer Officer.

LIBRA raises money for the Haematology Department at Kings College, London. David is keen to have other runners join him to help raise as much as possible, ensuring new and improved treatments for blood disorders can be developed. The race has previously been rated the UK’s “Best Race for Beginners” in Runner’s World. The entry fee is £20 and anyone interested should contact David on 07712 224446. Alternatively, if you’d like to donate, David’s fundraising page can be found at https:// www.lionsgiving.co.uk/Pages/Fundraisers/
