What’s INSIDE this month

Hello and welcome to the March edition of The Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine. Easter break this year, in 2024, falls on Sunday, March 31, 2024. Also, on March 31, clocks go forward

This month’s edition has the latest book releases, photography ideas, hot cross bun recipes, and more. Please also note our newest businesses in this month’s issue. We have Jackie’s Mobile Hairdressing for home visits (6). Dyslexia South is available to help anyone who has learning difficulties. (5) Plus. For beauty, we have The Vinery Beauty Clinic for this month’s issue; they are offering DMK Enzyme Therapy Facial (p 10). Local Garden Designer

It’s that time of year again where we start to see new growth emerging in our gardens and we dare to dream about lazy, hazy summer days pottering about the garden or relaxing outside and feeling the warmth of that first summer sun on our faces.

Immersing ourselves in green spaces has been proven to enhance our health and wellbeing but sometimes we aren’t maximising the positive impact our own outdoor spaces could have on our lives.

If your outside space could give you more or you have a space that you feel a bit stuck with, it is always worth talking to a qualified garden designer. Based in Shoreham by Sea and working across Sussex, Kate from KM Garden Design brings contemporary, innovative design to any sized garden or landscape and she is now taking bookings for new projects in 2024.

Kate brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her work and says, ‘The key to excellent garden design is getting to know you and the space that you want improving, what is working for you and what isn’t. Trust,

collaboration, and communication are at the heart of my work. By truly listening to you I develop a rich understanding of your dreams and aspirations for the space. Whatever your budget and whether you want a space for work, rest, play or any combination of these, I take the utmost care to deliver a sympathetic, stylish response to your brief.’

During 2023 Kate was kept busy with a range of exciting projects, ‘I just love designing lovely spaces for lovely people and I have been lucky enough to always work with such excellent clients, tradespeople and suppliers. If you think I can help then get in touch and we can explore the possibilities together.’

Making contact by phone, WhatsApp or email is the first step in an exciting journey to finally achieve your dream outdoor space.

Shoreham Telecommunication Fault

In the 1930s, Britain’s telephone network was operated by the (General) Post Office and maintained by its electrical engineers.

These engineers found themselves widely dealing with a new problem in 1937. It was a phenomenon that became known as a cable creepage and it caused serious damage and interruption to the telephone service. To solve the mystery of its twisted and broken cables, a scientific experiment was carried out using a Cambridge Vertical Vibrograph. It was found that the increasing use of lorries and other heavy vehicles was causing the telephone cables that were laid in ducts beneath a road, to bend in the direction of the travelling vehicles.

In one instance a cable of 1 inch in diameter in a 3 inch duct was found to have crept (bent) 2 feet in the direction of passing traffic. The magnitude of creepage depended on the vibration of the wheels and the travelling depression a lorry’s weight made on a road surface. The Brighton to Worthing road at Shoreham consisted of a causeway across waterlogged gravel. Here creepage was found to be at its most serious, due to the passing of heavily laden lorries.

To overcome the problem it was decided that some means of anchoring the cables was required and several devices were tried. The arrangement finally adopted was known as the Anti-Creepage Device No. 1. This type of anchor was applied at each of the joint boxes that were spaced roughly every 170 yards and it proved to be successful. Additionally, fitting an AntiCreepage collar over the compressed part of a cable prevented its lead sheath from yielding. This method was applied at Shoreham where the core of a multiple twin cable had crept relative to the diameter of its lead sheath. Once this work was completed, observations made over six months showed no further relative movement.

On the 21st of July 1939, Post Office Electrical Engineers encountered a rather unusual type of cable fault at the point where the River Adur met

Shoreham harbour. Two sub-aqueous six and half pound lead sheathed cables armoured with steel tape and each containing 300 pairs of 33-No. 8 steel wires crossed the harbour. At low tide, after the sea had drained from the harbour, a mud bed was left with a narrow channel through which the river water passed. The cables had originally been laid on this mud bed and across the basin of the river channel at a depth of 3 feet. However this channel had become silted up at the same time that the riverbed had eroded. In 1939, the river water at low tide followed a new course through the harbour and a deep gully 20 feet wide had been cut by erosion leaving the cables hanging precariously. During the wet season of the year, a large quantity of water flowed out of the river, and at low tide this cascaded through the gully. The force of the water beating against the suspended cables caused them to swing up to 3 inches during the low water period of each tide. This oscillation was akin to cable creepage in which the lead sheath of a cable fractured, exposing the wires inside. On digging up the buried length of cables, they were found at 6 inches in depth instead of the 3 feet they had originally been buried at, with the chains laid as weights almost entirely gone.

Lead-sheathed cables such as these were installed in the ground up until the late 1960s. As late as 2019, BT Engineers found them still in use in some places in the UK, having never been replaced.

Fuddy Meers

A dark comedy written by David Lindsay-Abaire

Directed by Jacqueline Harper

The multi-award-winning Wick Theatre Company are known for their innovative and challenging productions, and Fuddy Meers this March will be no exception. It’s a dark, demented American comedy with an unsettling domestic drama at its heart, yet amidst its madness and bleak humour, it relishes in providing oddly poignant moments.

Fuddy Meers revolves around Claire, a sunny amnesiac who starts each day as a blank slate on which her husband and teenage son must imprint the facts of her life. On this particular day, the mayhem begins with Claire’s abduction by a limping, lisping man who claims that her husband is dangerous. The memorable menagerie of characters she meets on the quest for her truth also includes Claire’s stroke-afflicted, aphasic mother, a strange man with a foul-mouthed puppet alter ego, and a police officer. The audience experiences Claire’s day from her memoryaddled perspective as she tries to put the pieces together, navigating her kaleidoscopic world in which nothing is as it seems, no one can be trusted, and even fewer people can be understood.

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and recent Tony award winner David Lindsay-Abaire has crafted a beautifully absurd play about pain, identity, miscommunication, and, ultimately, the courageous confrontation of a traumatic past. This is an unforgettable story about a woman who can’t remember hers.

Director Jacqueline Harper says that her directorial debut with Wick Theatre Company had to be Fuddy Meers. “I found the script for Fuddy Meers at a used bookstore when I was a teenager and have loved it ever since. Never having had the opportunity to see a production of the show, I knew it had to be my first play as a director. What better way to see it than to make it,” she says. The play was an award-winning, off-Broadway success but is far less well-known in the UK. As a result, Sussex audiences will be treated

to a wildly unpredictable, darkly funny play that rarely graces these shores.

Fuddy Meers runs Wednesday 13 to Saturday 16 March at 7.45 each evening. Book through the Wick Theatre website: www.wicktheatre.co.uk or Ticket Source 0333 666 3366 (transaction fee applies on telephone bookings). Please note there are trigger warnings: domestic abuse, drug use, gunshots, and a foul-mouthed puppet. Age restrictions: unsuitable for those under 15.

Jonathan Samuel:Retrorama Records

I remember the excitement paying the last 50p instalment at my local record shop finally owning my first David Bowie LP.

For my 14th birthday my mother took me to Earls Court to see my idol on The Heroes Tour. Even now, playing that Bowie record , I’m reminded of her gift...a love of music and a recognition of it’s power.

My dream to own a music shop began with just a box of second-hand records on a stall in Shoreham’s Vintage Emporium . Eventually I opened Retrorama Record Shop in my home town of Shoreham to provide a friendly, inclusive music store where everyone feels welcome and can find the sounds they love amongst the pre loved and new vinyl. My shop is frequented by both regular customers, families and ‘passers by’ popping in to see what’s playing.

There is no greater satisfaction than seeing the joy music brings

Whether it’s a teenager discovering Carole Kings ‘Tapestry’ for the first time or older folk finding records they owned some 40 years ago , each day brings unique and meaningful customer interactions.

Many regular visitors have become good friends, sharing memories of gigs attended and icons met (and there’s a few local ‘icons’ who regularly pop in!)

Last year I opened ‘The Secret Garden’ , a pop up venue with live music and bar . The early evening gigs included Mellow Jazz, folk and of course Bowie nights.

In this our Anniversary Year I will be hosting many more events to celebrate 10 years of Retrorama, sharing more’ Tales from the Record Shop’ over the coming months.

ROPETACKLE CINEMA presents

An EXHIBITION ON SCREEN PAINTING THE MODERN GARDEN: MONET TO MATISSE

Claude Monet was arguably the most important painter of gardens in the history of art, but he was not alone. Great artists like Van Gogh, Bonnard, Sorolla, Sargent, Pissarro and Matisse all saw the garden as a powerful subject for their art. These, and others, feature in an innovative and extensive exhibition from the Royal Academy of Art. The film takes a magical journey to discover how different contemporaries of Monet cultivated modern gardens to explore expressive motifs, abstract colour, decorative design and utopian ideas. Spring is in the Air

Spring is almost upon us and daffodils are thankfully starting to brighten many of our gardens. In true spring fashion, Adur East Lions Club will once again be donning bright yellow Daffodil hats to fundraise for Marie Curie at Shoreham Farmer’s Market on Saturday 9th March.

Marie Curie has free information and support about dying, death and bereavement, online, in print, and over the phone. From first questions after a terminal diagnosis, or information about accessing services, to experiences shared by carers, guidance on planning for death, and support for grief. Marie Curie also provide expert hospice care wherever it’s needed – either in a hospice or within the comfort of your own home. Marie Curie is a charity and therefore relies on kind donations from members of the public like you in order to continue to offer their vital services. Further

information can be found at https://www.mariecurie.org.uk

Over the last ten years, excluding 2021 (Covid lockdown), Adur East Lions has raised almost £7,000 for Marie Curie! Come and find us at the Shoreham Farmer’s Market (we’ll be the ones wearing the big yellow hats), say “hello”, and donate to help this amazing Charity provide care and support, not only to people with a terminal illness, but also their families.

If you’re interested in helping your community and would like to talk to us about becoming a Member of the Club, when

you could be involved with a huge variety of other activities too (such as our Annual Family Fun Day in Buckingham Park, our twice yearly Senior’s Tea Socials, or our Santa’s Grotto in Southwick), we’d love to hear from you. You can call us on 0345 833 7356, or check out our facebook page at www. facebook.com/adureastlionsclub.com. Alternatively, stop by our stall at the Shoreham Artisan Market!

Personal Favourite Subjects

Regular readers of this page may have gathered that I enjoy ‘Street’ photography and I often include bikes in my pictures. To me, bicycles have an appealing skeletal, structural form, often adding bright colour and throwing interesting shadows. They are a very recognisable shape so just by filling a corner of the frame with a section of a spoked wheel seems to add an identifiable visual full stop to keep the eye of the viewer in the image.

Another visual aspect that appeals to me is a colour match between foreground elements and the background. Two images here have bikes in the foreground of a similar colour to the background. A few months ago I had a short break in Krakow and wandered the back streets, camera in hand.

There are many well used cycle lanes offering easy access for cyclists into town and some interesting shop fronts, so composing these photographs wasn’t difficult. The light was good for highlighting shapes and textures and throwing shadows so I set to work creating a short series of themed

images. I hope you like them. You can see more of my images here: www. instagram.com/shoreham_steve

Copies, Curtains & Ways Of Looking: Experiencing Paintings In The Past

Monday 11 March 2024

10-12 am The Steyning Centre, Fletchers Croft, Steyning BN44 3XZ

How does our experience of living with and looking at artwork today compare to earlier centuries? This lecture considers the very different conditions in which paintings were displayed and enjoyed in the past, as well as the different responses they evoked. It draws on the evidence within paintings for the many surprising ways in which people handled, hung, used and responded to the art that they owned.

Chantal has an MA in History of Art from Edinburgh and a PhD from the Warburg Institute, London University. She has taught at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, and as a freelance lecturer for a number of societies and institutions in London. Having also trained as a paintings conservator, she brings a deeper understanding to her lectures. Have a Little Faith: Life Lessons on Love, Death and How Lasagne

Always Helps by Kate Bottley

The Reverend Kate Bottley addresses the common scepticism towards faith,

especially among non-religious individuals, by emphasising that faith is a universal human trait, transcending specific beliefs.

This intriguing book isn’t focused on specific religious doctrines but on the broader concept of faith as an integral part of being human.

Through sharing her own experiences and how her beliefs have helped her navigate life’s challenges, she aims to offer hope and guidance to others, with an added touch of humour involving lasagne.

A Very Private School

In this poignant memoir, Charles Spencer recounts the trauma of being sent away from home at age eight to attend a boarding school.

A Very Private School offers a clear-eyed, first-hand account of a culture of cruelty at the school Spencer attended in his youth.

Drawing on the memories of many of his schoolboy

contemporaries, as well as his own letters and diaries from the time, he reflects on the hopelessness and abandonment he felt aged eight, the long-lasting impact of his experiences and, eventually, a positive reclamation of his childhood.

Don’t Hold Your Breath…

Jenny Davys, registered osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, explains how many of us are just not getting the oxygen we need and the impact this can have.

Are you breathing? Seems a silly question. Of course you are, or you wouldn’t be reading this article! But HOW are you breathing, and how well? You may have heard of sleep apnoea – a serious medical condition where people stop breathing during sleep – but how about “screen apnoea”? The term has been coined to describe something less drastic and yet which, over time, can be detrimental to our health...

Studies have shown that people often breathe less deeply and even hold their breath when working at a laptop or scrolling through social media on phones. This is a subconscious effect of the brain “switching off” the breathing mechanism to focus briefly on the task in hand – the trouble comes when we do it for too long.

The results of chronic breath-holding and shallow breathing can upset the balance of oxygen and CO2 in the blood, over time leading to foggy thinking, fatigue and the brain going into “fightflight” mode, creating anxiety and stress.

Long periods sitting, slumping the lower back, with shoulders hunched, make it more difficult for the body to expand the lungs. We breathe into the upper ribs only, tightening our neck and chest muscles. This all can lead to neck and back pain – which we osteopaths then see in our clinics.

Some tips to avoid “screen apnoea” and its effects.

1.NOTICE - how are you breathing? Are you holding your breath? Is there any tension in your neck, your chest, your upper back, your lower back? Your shoulders, hips, legs or buttocks? Let it go!

2.ADJUST - your position. Roll your shoulders backwards, circle your ankles, your wrists, bend and stretch out your knees – get the circulation going.

3.BREATHE - sit upright (but not tense) with feet flat on the floor, hand resting on knees palms up to expand your chest. Imagine a string gently lifting your head to create space between your shoulders and ears.

Take a breath IN (through your nose if possible) and allow air to fill your lungs, right down into the lower ribs and into your back. Your abdomen naturally rises as you do this, as your diaphragm contracts down.

Breathe OUT (through your nose if possible) and sense the diaphragm and all the muscles around your neck and chest softening and your spine lengthening. Repeat 3 times.

4.STRETCH – If you are able, reach upwards while inhaling, then exhale as you lower your arms, relaxing your shoulder blades. Now, open up your upper backand ribcage by placing one hand on the opposite knee, breathe IN and gently twist from your waist to that side. Exhale to return to the centre. Repeat on the other side.

The 20-20-20 ruleT ake 20-second break after every 20 minutes of looking at your screen to look at something 20 feet away from you. This adjusts your focus and head position. OR use that 20 seconds to breathe deeply or stretch as above.

Is it time for you to breathe now?!

Peter Sidwell’s Prune & Orange Hot Cross Buns Introduction

As a master baker and judge of ITV’s Britain’s Best Bakery, Peter Sidwell knows a thing or two about hot cross buns, as this fragrant and delicious recipe testifies.

Method

1. Remove the bowl from your stand mixer, then add the butter and flour. Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips to form fine breadcrumbs. Add the yeast, salt and sugar, then stir to combine everything together.

2. In a jug, mix together the milk, water and boiled green tea, make a well in the flour mixture and pour in the liquid. Put the mixing bowl back on the stand mixer, then use the dough hook to combine wet and dry ingredients into a ball.

3. Knead the dough in the mixer for 10 minutes until smooth and stretchy. Cover the bowl with cling film and leave the dough to rise in a warm place for one hour until doubled in size.

4. Prepare the fruit and spices, then scoop the risen dough out of the bowl and stretch it over the work surface until the size of A4 paper. Scatter the spices and

fruit over the dough, then fold in on itself, kneading gently to distribute throughout the dough.

5. Portion off the dough and, on a lightly floured surface, roll into balls – either six large or 10 small. Place on a floured baking tray, 1-2cm apart, and leave in a warm place for about an hour until doubled in size again.

6. Heat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4. Using a pastry brush, brush the tops of the buns with beaten egg.

7. To make the crosses, make a smooth paste with the flour and water (add 4tbsp first and only add the rest if you think it needs it), put into a plastic piping bag and pipe onto each bun, then bake for 25 minutes in the preheated oven.

8. Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire rack. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then brush glaze with runny honey, before leaving to cool completely.

Ingredients:

Ingredients: (makes six larger buns or ten smaller buns)

Ingredients

For the buns

• 25g unsalted butter

• 500g strong flour (50:50 white and wholemeal), plus extra white flour for dusting

• 7g yeast & salt

• 50g caster sugar

• 150ml milk, 50ml water

• 200ml green tea

• 140g California Prunes, finely chopped

• 50g candied orange peel, finely chopped

• ½ tsp ground ginger

• ½ tsp cinnamon

• 3 cardamom pods (seeds only)

For the crosses and glazing

• 1 egg, beaten, for glazing

• 75g flour

• 4-5 tbsp water

• Runny honey to glaze

Top Tip

You don’t need to buy plastic piping bags especially for this recipe, instead transfer the flour and water paste into a food bag and simply snip off one bottom corner.

Gardening in March

Green ngers… the Alan Titchmarsh column

He’s a magnificent broadcaster, gifted gardener, brilliant author and all-round horticultural visionary. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about readying your garden for the spring season… and beyond!

As the days grow longer and the air becomes warmer, there is so much to do and so little time to do it, so while I will rattle through a long list of possible jobs, remember you can only do as much as you can do, and it’s about prioritising rather than trying to get absolutely everything done.

So… starting with flowers, manage your spring bulbs correctly. For da odils and other spring bulbs, remove any developing seedheads, yet allow the foliage around them to die back naturally.

nourishes the soil but also helps with the retention of moisture and weed suppression.

For a natural touch, sow wildflower seeds in trays or modules to create a minimeadow. This will also add pollinators and beauty to your garden.

Spring is of course the perfect time to finish pruning your roses – as well as planting new ones if you feel like it! – as early trimming ensures healthier blooms and reduces the risk of disease. Do the same with alpines as they begin to flower - this not only enhances their appearance but also protects them from damp soil.

Another important task is the rejuvenation of willows and dogwoods, because pruning these down to the base stimulates vigorous new growth, ensuring lush foliage and vibrant colours. Then there’s your forced bulbs - once they’ve faded indoors, plant them out in the garden.

Now is also the perfect time to plant lilies and other summer-flowering bulbs in pots and borders. Tidying up these borders by removing established and newly-germinating weeds, then generously mulch with garden compost, which not only

Moving to fruits and vegetables, it’s crucial to start early to get the most out of your garden. To avoid carrot root fly, sow carrots under cloches or fleece (in fact, pop your spinach under there at the same time); while tomatoes, chillies, sweet peppers and aubergines should go indoors.

Early potatoes can be planted in trenches or large tubs, depending on space, while parsnips require a long growing season, so sow them as soon as the soil warms up.

Feeding cabbages and other brassicas with nitrogen-rich fertiliser is essential for their growth, while planting strawberries in a hanging basket is a clever way to protect them from slugs.

And to return to the start, while you can’t get everything done, the e ort you do put in now will lead to a lush, productive, joyful bounty later in the year. Happy gardening!
