Buckingham Park Shoreham Sunday 5th of February 2023 Shoreham Pirates vs Edenbridge U12
At Buckingham Park in Shoreham on a glorious winter morning the Shoreham Pirates faced off against their visitors from Kent, Edenbridge U12s in their second waterfall match after the Christmas break.
Edenbridge started off the first half very strong managing to turn the ball over in the rucks and gain possession of the ball to test the Shoreham defence and get the ball over the line multiple times but were unable to finish as the Shoreham defence were able to hold the ball up and force the attackers back numerous times before getting the ball clear of the line.
It wasn’t until halfway through the first half that Ollie O’Rourke broke through the Edenbridge defence to get the ball down over the line for Shoreham.
Getting a try down on the scoresheet appeared to invigorate the Pirates who managed to score another two tries thanks to the efforts of Harry Brown who forced his way through the visitors defence in quick succession.
A few minutes before half time Edenbridge eventually broke through the Pirates defence to get their first try of the match, but thanks to some great work on the wing by Wilson Machin the Pirates increased the gap again making the score 20-5 at half time.
Following the restart Edenbridge chased down a very well placed kick which led to a battle for position close to the try line and after fiercely contesting the ball managed to get the ball down for the final try of the match. Final score was 35-10 for the
Pirates.
The game was a stern test for the Pirates by a very physical team in which they held their own and played well in line with good rugby values that saw them gain a fantastic win.

MILLIONS OF FIXED-RATE MORTGAGES ARE ENDING. DISCOVER 6
PRACTICAL STEPS YOU CAN TAKE NOW
Over the last year, interest rates have increased from historic lows. Fixed-rate mortgage payers that have been shielded from the rises so far could find their outgoings rise if their deal ends in 2023. 57% of fixed-rate mortgages ending have an interest rate below 2%
Data from the Office for National Statistics suggests that 1.4 million households will need to renew their mortgage deal this year.
Among the fixed-rate deals coming to an end, 57% have an interest rate below 2%. It’s unlikely you’ll find a new mortgage deal that has an interest rate this low. If your mortgage deal is ending, being proactive can help you prepare for the potentially higher costs. 5 practical things you should do if your fixed-rate mortgage ends in 2023
• Review your budget: Take some time to understand what rising interest rates will mean for you. Being prepared means the hike in your mortgage outgoings won’t be unexpected.
• Decide if taking out a new mortgage deal is right for you: While it can be tempting not to take out a new mortgage deal if there’s nothing comparable to your current one, you could end up paying more. Once your current deal ends, you’ll usually be moved on to your lender’s standard variable rate (SVR). This rate isn’t usually competitive, and you could save money by taking out a new deal.
• Decide what kind of mortgage is right for you: Interest rates may continue to rise over 2023. So, you may choose a fixed-rate deal again. This would
mean that your repayments could not increase during the term. However, if interest rates began to fall, you wouldn’t benefit.
In contrast, with a variable- or tracker-rate mortgage, the interest rate could rise and fall. Which is right for you will depend on your financial circumstances and priorities.
• Set out the mortgage term: Usually, each time you remortgage, the term falls. However, this doesn’t have to be the case.
You may choose to shorten or extend how long you’ll be paying the mortgage. If the cost of living crisis means your budget will be stretched, choosing a longer term could provide more flexibility and lower initial repayments but will mean the overall cost of borrowing is higher.
• Search for deals early: You can often lock in a new mortgage deal up to six months before your current one ends. Searching early means you can avoid paying your lender’s SVR while you find a new deal and it gives you more time to find a suitable option for you.
Please contact us on 01273 774855 or email advice@pembrokefs.co.uk if you would like more information and quote reference PFSIS.
Your home or property could be repossessed if you do not keep up mortgage repayments. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home.

London and Shoreham Great Ship Canal Company
In the ‘Civil Engineer And Architects’ Journal’ of 1856 is a paragraph on the foundation of a company named the London And Shoreham Great Ship Canal Company.
In October 1856, Mr James Boyd of London proposed the building of a ship canal that would directly link ShorehamBy-Sea to London. The objective was that ships, no matter what their tonnage, would avoid the risk, delay, danger and expense of, having sailed from the Atlantic through the English Channel, then needing to go around the Foreland to gain access to London by the Thames Estuary. The number of vessels that were lost or sustained serious damage off the Foreland, or on the treacherous Goodwin and Margate Sands each year was said to be sufficient to warrant the project.
This ambitious project again received consideration in 1908, as reported by the ‘Westminster Gazette’ and ‘The Telegraph’. The cost of constructing the ship canal was estimated at over 30 billion pounds - an astronomical figure to consider spending at that time. A royal commission was appointed to study the feasibility of the project and to consider the problems water-farers currently encountered on the busy existing canals of the country. The Shoreham to London ship canal, if constructed, would have been 47 miles long, with a large and easily accessible natural harbour at the Channel end (Shoreham). Cutting the canal through the Dorking Hills, would it was said, be the cause of the only serious engineering difficulty to be overcome. This cutting would though be as much trouble as raising the financial cost for the project.
The ship canal project continued through its planning stages for the following reasons: A) Shipbuilding could be concentrated on the River Thames and the largest ships ever built could be constructed there. (B) The tonnage ships carried could be increased. (C) The Royal Navy would be able to dock its largest battleships in the River Thames. At the time Britain feared invasion from France and the rise of the German navy. It was thought the Royal Navy being based in the Thames could counter both threats. (D) Sailing time for vessels travelling to the Atlantic Ocean would be cut and the ships would avoid the dangerous Goodwin Sands. (E) It was thought the canal would solve recurring shipping problems on the Thames, which was a busy working river at the time. (F) The canal would open a new avenue by which London’s ‘toiling millions’ might go on convenient excursions to the south coast, namely Shoreham-By-Sea. (G) It would bring industrial prosperity to two, if not to three or four, of the Southern Counties. (H) The existence of the canal would create new industrial towns and villages along its way. (I) The construction of the canal would give several years of

The Southwick Players present The Merchant of Venice
by William Shakespeare
Directed by Sam Razavi
Multi-award winning Wick Theatre Company, celebrating 75 years of theatre this year, is set to present a very special and unique version of “The Merchant of Venice” in March. This classic play is fraught with many difficulties in current times as it is billed as a comedy yet the main thread of the plot is far from comedic. This very special version sees the tale brought completely up to date, as the ideas are already current, not least are the themes of religious prejudice and the fundamental sense of right and wrong.
This main thread is of the Merchant: Antonio, who borrows money from Shylock and instead of interest, they agree if Antonio cannot pay that he must give a pound of his flesh to Shylock. Taken out of context this might seem ludicrous to our modern eyes but as it unfolds in the play it is easy to understand how this happens, as there is no way in anyone’s view that Antonio would not have the money to pay Shylock back – then of course disaster strikes and they wind up in court, with Shylock seeking just what he is owed. The comedy plot strand in the play is more a rom-com of today, where a rich daughter: Portia, is curbed by her father’s last wishes to only marry whoever guesses correctly to find her portrait in one of three different caskets. An array of arrogant suitors then try their luck, cueing much hilarity, until she finds her true love: Bassanio. Both strands come together in the courtroom and while there are additional aspects of this which in Shakespeare’s day would have been aimed at being comedic, they are far from that now, and actually tragic.
Shakespeare’s comedies all neatly tie up with everyone married off and living happily ever after. This is the exception to that rule: for this, and many other reasons scholars have debated whether this is a play about anti-Semitism or an anti-Semitic play. This is certainly a play about prejudice and where it can lead, and the consequences of repressing and subjugating people. Antonio is a Christian
and Shylock is a Jew: the recipient of discrimination all his life as was the society at that time. While his most famous and heartfelt speech including the lines: “If you prick us, do we not bleed?” shows his viewpoint and speaks of equality and parity so clearly and probably more eloquently than many can manage today; there is anti-Semitism woven throughout the play from the way Shylock is greeted to the outcome where he is completely destroyed, yet still alive. To therefore bill this as a comedy would therefore be insulting, while Director Sam Razavi has kept the comedy alive in the rom-com strand of the plot, the play is a dramatic one when it portrays the relationships with Shylock and the outcome of the bargain he and Antonio have struck.
“It is a superb commentary on the greatest failure of humanity: the inability to eradicate prejudice from our day to day lives” says Sam

Antonio, Bassanio and Shylock (Guy Steddon, Sam Razavi, Dan Dryer)
Razavi, who has completely updated this version to present day, including aspects of Reality TV. Sam says his vision is “to show that we live in a society where it is not beyond the realms of possibility that given the wrong power to the right people, with a sprinkling of persuasion, that tragedy can occur.”
There have been many updated versions over the past 10 years so it is clear this is a play in current consciousness. The society we live in of cancel culture: where people are quick to judge, quick to form an opinion and disagreeing with someone can cause friendships to break and families to be torn, this play asks people to empathise with each side, not showing a right and wrong, just different perspectives. Plus, the comedy moments should result in more than a little hilarity. An intriguing blend of Shakespeare in modern times will be a unique and riveting version: one definitely not to miss.
“The Merchant of Venice” runs Wednesday 8 to Saturday 11 March at 7.45 each evening. Book through the Wick Theatre website: www. wicktheatre.co.uk or Ticket Source 0333 666 3366 (transaction fee applies on telephone bookings).

Making Sport: Jane Austen and the Art of Satire by Annalie Talent
- Monday 13th March 2023
Jane Austen was a gifted social satirist. Despite the fact that her novels are best known today as love stories, throughout her work she takes delight in lampooning human folly and vanity. We know that Austen was inspired by satirical writings of the 18th century, but to what extent may she have been influenced by the satirical art of her day?
This lecture will explore links between the visual image and the written word; it will draw on a range of satirical prints published during Austen’s lifetime – including those by Thomas Rowlandson and James Gillray - and consider how far these visual images may have influenced and inspired one of our greatest and best loved novelists.

Chestnut Tree House
We have roles available throughout the organisation, from retail and fundraising to event hosts and play volunteers. This is a hospice built on love, and we would not be what we are without our volunteers and their hard work, dedication and commitment.
No matter what your skills, experience and interests, there will be an opportunity for you to make a real difference. From talking to our volunteers, we know that they value the impact on
their lives too. “Volunteering at Chestnut Tree House is always rewarding, sometimes humbling but never sad,” one told us.
The main qualities we look for in our volunteers is that they are reliable and honest, and reflect our core values of being caring, courageous and connected. Whatever role you choose, you will be giving back to your community and helping us care for local children and young people, enabling
them and their families to make the most of every day they have together. Come along for tea and refreshments at our open afternoon, where you can have a chat to staff and volunteers and find your perfect role. Friday 17 March 2023 in Brighton Harbour Hotel & Spa, 1pm4pm. New plans for Beach Green in Shoreham
There is fresh hope that Beach Green in Shoreham could benefit from new toilets and the prospect of a cafe and community space.
Back in October 2019, planning permission was granted for a new site in place of the run-down oilet block that was going to include a split level cafe and restaurant with a roof terrace, public toilets and community space.
However, the formal agreement with Brighton-based developers Boxpark has now ended and the planning application has elapsed leading us to look at potential new options.
As part of this approach, we are keen to work with the local community to explore how best to replace the public toilets at Beach Green and to see if there is scope for a community cafe or similar model based on a seasonal concession operating from the space.
Councillors have asked Council officers to work up some options for consideration and use these as the basis for consultation with the local community in April/May 2023.
Councillor Emma Evans, Adur Cabinet Member for the Environment and Leisure, said:
“The run-down toilet block is still an eyesore in what is in an otherwise much-loved green space, so I am pleased we can now move forward to try to find a solution that renews these facilities for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors.
“Beach Green is used all-year-round; and rather than relying on a third party, the Council wants to provide new toilets and potentially a small cafe which could be community space too, so we are keen to hear people’s views.”
Cllr Joss Loader, who represents Marine Ward, added:
“Beach Green is a focal point on Shoreham Beach but the toilets are in desperate need of replacement.
“There is real potential here to address the concerns that residents expressed on the earlier proposals, carry out meaningful consultation and hopefully deliver an attractive design that is in keeping with this unique location.”

St Mary de Haura on Historic
England’s ‘At Risk’
Throughout December 2022, St Mary de Haura resounded with festive seasonal music.
Many people who visit St Mary’s are immediately confused by its role as the parish church of New Shoreham. ‘New’? Looking up at the ancient Norman stonework, it’s easy to forget St Mary’s wasn’t the first church in the town. In fact, St Nicolas the parish church of ‘Old Shoreham’ claims an even more ancient pedigree.
Nonetheless, despite being the younger sibling, 900-year old St Mary de Haura is an architectural and historical gem. Although only a portion of the vast original building, built by the Norman baron, Philip de Braose, remains standing as the current church, it is an impressive building. Visitors may have noticed the unusual flying buttresses which support the chancel and aisles of the building – an unusual feature for a parish church. Further historic details including graffiti from the Civil War can be spotted. The church is committed to being every day so people can visit to enjoy the history as well as peace and tranquillity of our beautiful church.
Given its historic value, many people are surprised to learn that St Mary de Haura received no state or government funding. Neither does it receive any subsidy or support from the central Church of England.
Responsibility falls instead to the Vicar, Churchwardens and the small group of staff and volunteers who run the church on a daily basis. Yet maintaining the
register
fabric and structural integrity of the building is an ongoing challenge, not least because of the inevitable effects of salt erosion from our sea air. It is partly because of this that St Mary’s remains on Historic England’s ‘At Risk’ register – a list of churches whose buildings and heritage are most vulnerable to disrepair.
The scale of the task of repairing and maintaining St Mary’s can seem daunting to those tasked with its preservation for future generations. What makes the task easier is the tireless commitment of the church congregation and the unfailing generosity of the wider community. People from across Shoreham and beyond feel a profound connection to St Mary’s as an enduring symbol of Shoreham’s past and a sign of hope for its future. If you’ve not already joined The Friends, perhaps now is the time to do so? Your support will ensure that the heritage of St Mary de Haura is

Adur Art Club
The Adur Art Club was formed 50 years ago by artists Mollie Harvey, John Lingham, Ricky Hales and Ron Lines, it met in a small rented room in the Old School in Ham Road,
Gradually people began to take interest in the group and joined, the room became too small for the numbers, so the founding members decided they needed a larger venue.
The club found its home at the new Shoreham Centre in Pond Road and the group was named the Adur Art Club. Over the years the club became one of the most prestigious in Sussex, at one time having more than 100 members of all ages, enjoying painting in all media.
The club meets every Thursday throughout
the year, holds art demonstrations and outings to venues of artistic interest. During the pandemic the club had to shut down, but most members have now returned and it is getting back on its feet. The club is proud of the fact that it is still running, Artists wishing to join the Adur Art Club are most welcome to come along and talk to the team.

Do you have the right ID to vote?
The government has brought in new legislation which requires voters to show photo ID when voting at polling stations in some elections.
The new rules will be in place in time for the Worthing local elections on 4th May 2023, so Worthing residents who are voting in person will need to check that they have a valid form of photographic ID which looks like them.
Acceptable forms of photo ID include passports, driving licences, and older persons’ bus passes. The ID will need to be taken with you to the polling station when you vote.
Anyone who doesn’t have an accepted form of ID, or who is worried about taking important documents such as a passport to the polling station, can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. These can be presented at the polling station on election day instead of a photo ID.
Voters can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate online, or by filling out a paper application form to be submitted to the Council. The physical application forms can be requested from our Electoral Services department by post, or picked up from
Worthing Town Hall. We will also be operating an ‘in person’ service for those who want to apply, where residents can go to fill in the form and at the same time have their photo taken for the application.
Residents must already be registered to vote to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate, and the deadline to submit an application in time for the 4th May local elections is Tuesday 25th April 2023 before 5pm.
For more information about the new legislation, and to see a complete list of accepted forms of ID, see: To apply online for photo ID to vote, visit: Apply for photo ID to vote (called a Voter Authority Certificate) - on the GOV.UK website

Get The Most From Your Pre Run Stretch
Spring is here! Alex Marek, registered osteopath at SOC, gives advice on how to prepare safely for a run.
It’s Saturday morning, 8.00am - you wake up super-keen to take part in a Park Run or maybe a swift out-and-back along the river Adur. By the time you’ve made breakfast, got your kit on, and convinced yourself this is a good idea, you might have a few minutes for a warm-up before setting off. And what is your pre-run routine? Maybe a quick static stretch of your legs up against a garden gate or park bench? If so, you could be leaving yourself vulnerable to injury. Incorporating active stretches before running, even if you plan a slow steady run, is especially important for your joints and soft tissues.
Imagine your muscles as elastic bands. If you stretch them outside on a warmsummer’s day, they are more supple and stretch easily. But stretch those same bands on a cold, frosty morning, you could risk over-stretching and breaking them. Dynamic, or active, stretches help prepare your body for activity. They stimulate the cardiovascular system, increasing bloodflow into the muscles and other soft tissues, giving them the energy they need to work effectively. Muscle activation is also improved with increased nerve stimulation from active stretching.
So, what does a dynamic pre-run routine look like? Ideally, have a 5-10 minute walk or very gentle jog first, then 5-10 minutes active stretches. Here are a few to get you started:
High Knees: 30secs - 1min X 2. Start low, gradually increase knee height.
Heel kicks: 30secs - 1min X 2. Kick each leg behind you, bringing your heel to your buttocks.
Lateral side lunges: 30secs - 1min X 2.

Supporting Ukrainians Locally
For the Adur Ukraine Association this presented a real challenge - what could we do to enable Ukrainian guests living here to celebrate their special Christmas? In the event, thanks in part to the kindness and generosity of Shoreham Baptist Church, which provided the hall and all facilities, a special party was arranged for 6th January whereby local Ukrainians could celebrate their all important Orthodox Christmas festivities.
Centre piece of the event was huge quantities of food prepared by locally based Ukrainians - volunteers worked through the day preparing for the feast and, as guests arrived, many more brought along their own contributions, To ensure a successful and inclusive event many people gave hugely of their time and commitment - food prepared by Alla, Irina and Natasha, games ( for the adults and children ) prepared by Olesya, entertainment organised by Robin ably assisted by members of the local Adur Nightingales choir, Olga for capturing the party on film and video and wonderful decorations created by Yulya. But, of course, many more people were involved with special thanks to members of the Baptist Church who helped with preparing the hall and clearing up afterwards. And thanks also to many other local people and businesses who provided raffle prizes, the proceeds of which helped to finance the event. It was a wonderful family gathering enjoyed by many of the Ukrainians who have been welcomed in Adur homes. Perhaps the evening was best summed up by one of the guests saying “ ….thank you for helping us to celebrate and make this a real Ukrainian Christmas……”

For the many Ukrainian refugees living in the Adur area Christmas was a time of mixed emotionssadness because they were unable to celebrate Christmas in their own country but , at the same time, a feeling of safety that they were living with families in Adur and weren’t subject to daily missile attacks from Russian forces. and heritage and
Framing
One way to focus the attention of the viewer on the main focal point of your image is to leave a surround when you compose the image.
This could be by including a wider angle to include the walls of a narrow street as in the two outside photographs of my triptych on this page or leaving the vertical walls on either side of the door as in the centre picture.
You could ˜frame” a landscape by shooting through a window or a hole in the wall of a crumbling castle. It focusses the eye but also gives a sense of place rather than isolating a subject.
The grouping of the images here may seem somewhat disparate but the outside images both have strong spots of colour which draw the eye and a contrasting mix of light and shade whereas the centre image is more muted but has interest in the detail of the poster.
There are two figures in each outer image (one reflected in the shop window) and a single figure centrally placed in the poster in the middle.
All pictures were taken in my favourite place, Arles in France during their annual
photo festival. The brighter images frame the quieter tones of the central picturemore use of framing.

AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY KENT SURREY SUSSEX (KSS)
Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey
Sussex (KSS) needs your support!
Having just announced that 2022 was the busiest year in its 33-year history – the life-saving charity responded to 3,224 incidents last year, with 947 call outs in Sussex - KSS is urgently seeking to recruit more volunteers in order to help with more events and activities in the coming year.
The charity, which provides world-leading pre-hospital emergency care 24/7, currently has over 150 volunteers who help with a wide range of activities including managing collection boxes, marshalling at events, speaking at community events, office tasks and more. Volunteers offer a few hours on an occasional basis or regular hours each month.
Bridget Pepper, from the KSS Volunteer Development Team said, “Our volunteers are highly valued members of Team KSS, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who donates their time to support us. Over the last year, KSS has benefited from over 4,000 hours of support from volunteers and our volunteers were involved with raising or collecting over £250,000 on our behalf.”
“This year, with demand for our service at an all-time high and the need to raise even more funds due to the increased costs of operating our service, we need to recruit more volunteers and we have lots of opportunities available to suit people of all ages and abilities.”
“Alongside providing our charity with critical support, volunteers enjoy many benefits from working with us, including meeting new people, attending events and feeling a sense of pride in supporting an incredible charity in their local community.”
“We hope people from across the communities we serve will get in touch with us and find out more about how they can get involved. We really appreciate all the support we receive.”
KSS is an independent charity. It costs £16.6M a year or £45K per day to operate its world leading, life-saving service. This is a significant increase from the £15.2M required in 2022. 87% of KSS’s total income is raised through the incredible generosity of its supporters and 10% through NHS commissioning funds.
