Supporting Ukrainians Locally
For the Adur Ukraine Association this presented a real challenge - what could we do to enable Ukrainian guests living here to celebrate their special Christmas? In the event, thanks in part to the kindness and generosity of Shoreham Baptist Church, which provided the hall and all facilities, a special party was arranged for 6th January whereby local Ukrainians could celebrate their all important Orthodox Christmas festivities.
Centre piece of the event was huge quantities of food prepared by locally based Ukrainians - volunteers worked through the day preparing for the feast and, as guests arrived, many more brought along their own contributions, To ensure a successful and inclusive event many people gave hugely of their time and commitment - food prepared by Alla, Irina and Natasha, games ( for the adults and children ) prepared by Olesya, entertainment organised by Robin ably assisted by members of the local Adur Nightingales choir, Olga for capturing the party on film and video and wonderful decorations created by Yulya. But, of course, many more people were involved with special thanks to members of the Baptist Church who helped with preparing the hall and clearing up afterwards. And thanks also to many other local people and businesses who provided raffle prizes, the proceeds of which helped to finance the event. It was a wonderful family gathering enjoyed by many of the Ukrainians who have been welcomed in Adur homes. Perhaps the evening was best summed up by one of the guests saying “ ….thank you for helping us to celebrate and make this a real Ukrainian Christmas……”
