New Year’s Reads
If you’re finding a bit more time on your hands after a busy Christmas and New Year, January’s book selections have a selection of crime, murder, the monarchy and healthy new recipes! Murder on Lake Garda by Tom Hindle On the private island of Castle Fiore - surrounded by the glittering waters of Lake Garda - the illustrious Heywood family gathers begrudgingly for their son Laurence’s wedding to Italian influencer Eva Bianchi. But as the ceremony begins, a blood-curdling scream brings the proceedings to a devastating halt. With the wedding guests trapped as they await the police, old secrets come to light and family rivalries threaten to bubble over. Published by Cornerstone on January 18th The Queen of Poisons by Robert Thorogood Geoffrey Lushington, Mayor of Marlow, dies suddenly during a Town Council meeting. When traces of aconite - also known as the queen of poisons - are found in his coffee cup, the police realise he was murdered. But who did it? And why? The police bring Judith, Suzie and Becks in to investigate as Civilian Advisors right from the start, so they have free rein to interview suspects and follow the evidence to their heart’s content, which is perfect because Judith has no time for rules and standard procedure. But this case has the Marlow Murder Club stumped. Published by HarperCollins on January 18th Charles III – The Making Of A Modern Monarch by Robert Hardman From the author of the definitive Queen of Our Times comes a monumental biography of the new monarch, assessing how his long life in the Royal Family has prepared him for such an important role.
4
With unrivalled access to the king, the royal family, and the court, leading royal authority Robert Hardman brings us the inside story on the most pivotal and challenging year for the monarchy in living memory. From the death of Elizabeth II through to the ancient spectacle of the Coronation, from the rise of a new Prince and Princess of Wales to the latest “truth bombs” from the Sussexes, this is the story of the making of a monarch. Published by Cornerstone on January 18th Healthy Made Simple by Ella Mills Ella Mills, founder of Deliciously Ella, is back with over 75 brand new recipes devoted to making healthy eating easier. Bertie has a BA (Hons) in Drama from Manchester University, and a Diploma Internationale from the École Internationale du Théâtre, Jacques Lecoq. A member of the Inner Magic Circle, with Gold Star, Bertie has toured the world with a magic cabaret show and a one man show entitled All Aboard. Felicity Cloake’s Perfect Rice Pudding In her ongoing quest for culinary excellence, the award-winning food and travel writer Felicity Cloake has dedicated hours in the kitchen creating her ‘perfect’ version of classic dishes. Dog’s dinner How to find the balance between types of food that are both good for your pet, and the planet. The environment One of the most effective ways to reduce the environmental impact of your pet’s diet is to choose dog food that incorporates plant-based ingredients. Traditional meat-based diets often require more resources, such as land, water, and energy, compared to plant-based options. Similarly, look for dog food brands that use either insect or highquality plant-based proteins like
peas, lentils, or chickpeas. These ingredients can provide your dog with the essential amino acids they need for a balanced diet while significantly reducing the carbon footprint of their food. Good to meat you If you prefer to include meat in your dog’s diet, consider selecting products that use ethically sourced, human-grade meat. In addition, minimally processed dog food with fewer artificial additives and preservatives is not only healthier for your pet but also the environment. Quantity and quality Overfeeding is a common issue among pet owners, leading to excess food consumption and,
consequently, more waste. Consult with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate portion size for your dog’s age, size, and activity level. Extras Finally, try to opt for brands that use sustainable packaging materials, such as recyclable or biodegradable options. Reducing the amount of plastic waste generated by pet food packaging can significantly contribute to a greener planet.

Rowland Emett Frederick Rowland Emett was born on the 22nd of October 1906 in New Southgate London. He was educated at Waverley Grammar School in Birmingham and displayed a natural talent for drawing, notably caricaturing his teachers. He went on to study at Birmingham School of Arts and Crafts and his landscape painting A Cornish Harbour was exhibited at the Royal Academy and is now in the Tate collection. At the age of 14, Emett invented and patented his design for a gramophone volume control. In the 1930s, he worked as an industrial draughtsman, becoming in the Second World War, a draughtsman on the top-secret development of jet engines for the Air Ministry. He also drew satirical cartoons inspired by the illogical bureaucracy he encountered there, for the magazine Punch. His unique style of drawing often featured a railway train consisting of a bizarre-looking engine towing odd shaped carriages. In 1941, Emett illustrated the book Bells and Grass, which was a collection of humorous rhymes by Walter de la Mare that had been originally written for Punch. In the same year he married Elsie May Evans, who was known as Mary and in 1943 they published the children’s book Anthony and Antimacassar together. Emett’s first collection of cartoons was published in A Book of Curious Happenings in 1943. In 1947 Rowland Emett’s cartoon an eccentric signalman at Friars Fidgeting Signal Box became an actual reality on stage in the play Between the Lines at the Globe Theatre, London. In 1951, for the Festival of Britain, his steam locomotive cartoons Nellie, Neptune and Wild Goose were built as copper 14
and mahogany working models for his Far Tottering and Oyster Creek railway display at Battersea Park, London. A total number of two million passengers travelled on this model railway during the Festival of Britain. Drawing for Life magazine in 1954, Emett found a new market for his work in the USA. From 1956, he invented and then built with a team of engineers, eccentric, working contraptions in the blacksmith’s forge near his home in London Road, Henfield. Two models of the Featherstone-Kite Open Work Basket Weave Mark Two Gentleman’s Flying Machine were built. One was displayed at the Merrion Centre in Leeds and the other is on permanent display at the Mid-America Science Museum in Hot Springs, Arkansas. In

1966 he was commissioned by the company Honeywell and created The Forget-MeNot Computer Open Minded Spoon-Fed Executive Computer. The model toured international trade shows and was then permanently housed at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto. Their collection of 10 Emett pieces is displayed every December in an exhibition titled Dream Machines. In 1957, Rowland Emett worked on Kenneth More’s Hollywood movie The Admirable Crichton, designing the seashell record player for the film’s shipwrecked castaways to use. In 1968 he designed for the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, creating the inventions of Caractacus Potts who was played by the actor Dick Van Dyke. These inventions are on display at the Merrion Centre, Leeds. In 1973 Emett invented a water-powered musical clock, The Aqua Horological Tintinnabulator for the Victoria Centre, Nottingham that plays classical music every 15 minutes. In 1981, Michael Bentine inaugurated The Cats Cradle Pussiewillow III clock that is displayed at Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon.
Rowland Emett died on the 13th of November 1990. Some of his fascinating work is on display locally at the Emett Hut museum in Stoneywish Nature Reserve in Ditchling, East Sussex. Judy Upton Sources: Wikipedia. Credits for images to Sound Cloud Illustrators Lounge; Busieness Live

Details
My image this month focus on details which I have observed during my photo walks over the years.
Very often, a small element can be overlooked but when captured can often tell a story by itself. Two of the images here were taken in Paris at Pere - Lachaise cemetery. The rusted ornate metalwork with the dead ivy leaves entwinedseemed to set the solemn mood of the wider surroundings. The second from the same location also captures the emotive feel of the place. Despite being a colour image, it is low key and almost monochromatic. The weathered corners of the stone window frame adds a hint of a complimentary colour and emphasises the texture. It is also given a variation of tone by the playful shadow from a nearby leafy tree. My capture, ‘Love’, was another found image, this time a little closer to home at Brighton Marina. I knew I had to photograph this with care and empathy so I carefully selected part of someone’s very personal shrine. The wire fence background gives it a sense of place. The weatherbeaten teddy bear reveals that it had been there forsome time. He appears to be pointing towards the hanging ‘Love’ sign. I wanted to simplify the scene and capture the emotion which I hope I achieved. Although some may find the images a little downbeat for their taste, I find them uplifting in 16
many ways. Whereas so many of my personal photographs depict people, these simply depict human intervention in the world but remind us that it is all too temporary.

While Captain James Cook’s famous voyage across the Antarctic Circle had taken place a year previously, to many it was the third and final venture across the most unforgiving and lifeless of landscapes, at the very start of February 1774, that stepped the furthest into true uncharted territory. We look back on the 250th anniversary of an expedition that would change our perception of discovery forever. Captain Cook was on a mission to disprove a landmass and ended up achieving much in the process.
Most notably, between January 1773 and February 1774,
Cook and his crew achieved a remarkable milestone when they crossed into the Antarctic Circle at three ever-increasing degrees of southern latitude. Each marked the southernmost point reached by any known expedition at the time. One of the key contributions of Cook’s Antarctic voyage was his disproval of the existence of a vast southern continent, often referred to as Terra Australis. He meticulously charted the icy waters and concluded that there was no massive continent as previously believed. This finding reshaped the world map and had profound
implications for future exploration in the southern hemisphere. Aside from a being a feat of fortitude and great courage, the expedition yielded invaluable knowledge about the geography, climate, and ecosystems of the southern polar region. Cook’s meticulous charts and records paved the way for future explorers and scientists to build upon his discoveries, and build they did.

Viva La Propriétaire! Why let your dreams of becoming a landlord pass you by when you can look to France to start your investment? While the outlook in Britain only looks set to get worse for landlords, the French buy-tolet model means landlords can make a promising income from their property portfolio. Start with research When selecting an area to invest in, look at affordability and market demand. In other words, your chosen destination must be thriving to the extent that a lot of people are motivated to move there for work, but not thriving to the extent that the initial investment price is breathtakingly high. Brittany capital Rennes and Maine-et-Loire capital Angers both have promising demographics, and good average rental yields at 8.2% and 6.2% respectively. As places, there are also easily accessible from London – catch the Eurostar to Paris, then connect to your destination in under two hours.
Property type Generally speaking, apartments offer better returns, and if you invest in new developments you may benefit from the Loi Pinel tax break. This gives relief from income tax for investment in new-builds in selected areas, related to a percentage (from 12-21%) of the purchase price. However, it must be rented out for at least six years, and the longer you have the property for, the better the breaks. As with a UK investment, buying somewhere that needs a little work before you can invite tenants in is your best for higher yield, but of course this requires an extra level of commitment. Understand the French property philosophy The French system is designed to bring long-term security to both the landlord and the tenant. Furnished homes come with a one-year-lease, much like in the UK, however unfurnished properties have an automatic three-year-lease. Naturally there is little red tape before a property can be rented. It must be surveyed with electrical and gas systems being vetted, and be thoroughly inspected for dangers such as asbestos, lead paint or termites.

Financial fundamentals There are also buying costs and ongoing taxes that must be considered. In addition to estate agent fees there are other legal fees and taxes which vary depending on the region. Finally, look out for the ‘Taxe Foncière’, a property tax that must be paid by the owner of any property, and on average is around €800 to €900 per year. The biggest question of course, is simply whether you want to take a chance on a foreign market, but a little time in this magnificent country will have you feeling à la maison.
