Chairman’s Report

I am pleased to be able to present my report this year just at the time some of our Club’s potential projects have been incorporated into the recently approved Spit Master Plan.

Board and Management have worked hard over a number of years, and are now closer to securing additional land, and pursuing opportunities available to us within the Spit Master Plan, including increased berths, boat racking and a superyacht berth.

Although the superyacht berth has received the most publicity recently it is our intention to investigate and evaluate all the possible opportunities. Considerations will include the regulatory approval times required, availability of funding from grants etc, financial viability and of course member approval.

If and when the projects approach a viable point they will be presented to the members for consideration.

Meanwhile if you have any questions regarding the proposed projects I am happy to discuss them but there are still a significant number of matters to be resolved before we reach a definitive position on the proposed projects.

What we do have in place at the moment are two projects which we hope to complete within the coming months. They are the strengthening of the T head at the end of D arm to accommodate heavier superyachts which we have had to turn away up until now and the extension of the eastern deck and covers to both the east and west. The eastern extension will provide an exciting upgrade for more casual enjoyment with weather protection and enhanced food and beverage service. The extension of the western deck cover will make it more comfortable in the summer (including installation of fans) and prvide shade over the children’s playground.

The other major advance this year has seen the Oxenford facility get operational and provide a wonderful safe sail training alternative which is already reaching previously untapped school student interest and funnelling new junior sailors into further development at Hollywell.

Its exciting developments like these that keep our Club strong and enable us to deliver more to our existing membership and work toward increasing active membership. Management and Board are always looking for partnerships, and benefits, that will add value and interest to our membership.

It has taken the last three years of constant meetings with the Mayor, multiple Government Departments and Ministers, local Councillors, committees and planning groups to promote our vision for the Club and our members. YOUR yacht club is developing into an amazing place to visit, work and play.

Having said all this, this year hasn’t been stagnant. Our island getaway, Dux, has seen incredible improvements and is looking sensational.

Thanks to the Associates, a large Bali Hut has been erected for all to enjoy and the club has funded many improvements up there. If you haven’t been there for a few years.......go. You won’t be disappointed.

The ‘T’ head at the end of D arm is about to be strengthened to accomodate Super Yachts. There’s now over 5000 super yachts cruising the world and the Gold Coast is rapidly becoming a favourite port for them.

While we’re talking super yachts, the Western park area adjacent to the fuel wharf is proposed to also become a super yacht wharf. The GC City Council are working with us to develop this area into a world renowned port. The importance of this is not just limited to the SYC but will help the economy of the

Waterfront Committee Report

FUEL SALES: The fuel wharf has had another busy and successful year. The turnover at the fuel wharf was an amazing $2,477,691 this was helped by several Super Yachts refuelling before they left the marina. It is also pleasing to see members are using their facility.

SWING MOORINGS: The Club continues to manage the swing moorings as per our agreement with Gold Coast Waterways Authority. Our maintenance on the moorings will start once again over the next few months.

Waterways Authority have not made a final decision on the future of the moorings.

COMMITTEE:

Many of the long term sub-leases have now returned to the Club which also increases the overall cash flow. Funds are now being allocated annually to provide for the eventual replacement of the Marinas. Redevelopment of the Hardstand area for dry boat storage is still a work in progress and depends on the outcome of the future plan for “The Spit�. Also, in the planning are two Super Yacht berths to be built adjacent to the fuel wharf involving part of Jack Gordon park. These items require a lot more planning and would require ratification by members at a General Meeting.

Below is a summary of some of the activities and achievements over the past twelve months: MAIN BEACH MARINA: Major maintenance has been and continues to be carried out on A to E wings of the Marina. This includes the removal and replacement of most of the through bolts on all walkways and fingers. This was necessary due to the rusting of the nuts and some rods which prevented tightening, which is essential to preserve the strength of the marina. Some whalers have also been replaced during this process.

The Board has also approved work to strengthen the D-Arm T head which will allow the Club to berth Super Yachts up to 1500 T. This will cost $262,000.00 plus GST. HOLLYWELL MARINA: Only minor maintenance has been carried out on this marina during the year.

SHIPLIFT and HARDSTAND: This area has once again provided excellent service to members and visitors. Our Hardstand Manager Eden Crooks and his staff have

and the trans-Tasman solo race flying the SYC flag. A great effort. This year a record number of our yachts, both from Hollywell and the keelboats are intending to race at this year’s Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island regattas and we look forward to seeing their results. Our 10th anniversary Sail Paradise saw a great fleet of over 40 yachts competing off the Gold Coast beaches in early January. This regatta also incorporated the state IRC championships, a great feat for the Club. Sail Paradise in 2020 is shaping up to be bigger and better with a change of date to 2-5 January. Thanks to the hard work of past offshore representative, Dave Hows and the sailing office we are now the finishing port for the Trans Tasman solo race from Plymouth in New Zealand to the GoldCoast.

Sailing Committee Report

The increasing number of sailors who sail under our burgee in many state, national and international regattas is a testament to SYC’s commitment to fostering youth sailing. Our Matthew Belcher and Will Ryan are competing in regattas around the world aiming for the Olympics in Japan. We also have Joel Turner and our juniors, Blake Wilson, Tom Siganto and Ashleigh Swadling and many others who are aiming to one day follow in Matt’s footsteps and represent Australia at the Olympics. This doesn’t happen without great club support with coaching , sponsorship and the many volunteers who give up their time to promote youth sailing. Parents and friends of these young sailors are also to be congratulated for their ongoing support and encouragement. Travelling away to regattas is a big commitment.

With the help of the Dux committee, of which I am a proud member our Dux venue has never looked better. I urge you to visit this great site and enjoy its new facilities. Make yourself known to our hardworking caretakers, Brian and Donna.

It is our great honour over the course of this year to have been the host for various state and national championships, and our sailing office and volunteers again excelled in their roles. We are also, in August hosting the Australian Para Sailing Nationals with well over 50 competitors anticipated.

I’m looking forward to another successful year for sailing and see you on the water.

Cheers Our elite sailors are also generous with their time and Drew Jones knowledge and help our upcoming juniors in the Mentor Program lead by Matt Belcher. It is a great joy to go up to Hollywell and see the enthusiasm these young sailors show for their sport.

Our Club racing is going sensationally well. All divisions are showing increased participation numbers. Our offshore division is now a very race orientated, competitive fleet with often only a few minutes separating the winners. Yachts in our fleet, She, Ocean Gem, Wildflower 2, Impulse X and Another Painkiller are also participating in major ocean races such as Pittwater to Paradise, Sydney to Gold Coast and Sydney-Hobart

staying at the fabulous Oasis. Also auctioned was an exclusive Box of 3 vintage wines from Brygon Wines.

Guest speaker for the day was Kym Marston of Mt Warning Tours, a new sponsor just on board. It was a great fund raising day for the Committee.

Christmas Mega Raffle was our only Mega Raffle this year with a First Prize of a cruise to Tasmania for two donated by Zeppelin Travel. It was a great success with over $7,000 in profit.

ACTIVITIES FROM FEBRUARY TO APRIL 2019

The Committee resumed its activities with its first meeting on 6th February and launched into another year of functions and raffles.

Fashion Auction Parade and Dinner on 7th June, featuring designer women’s wear provided by Designer Wear Fashion Parades (DWFP). Guests enjoyed a two course dinner and participated in a lively auction of the designer fashions. It was the Committees first Fashion Auction dinner and was a great success.

‘Right Royal Gala Ball’ was held on 21st July featuring the 18 piece Royal Australian Navy Band under the direction of CPO Mike Vaughan. The band delighted guests with an exciting mix of Jazz and Big Band music and topped off the evening with a great rock revival segment. The band demonstrated yet again how versatile and talented its members are with some of them stepping up to brilliant vocals and CPO Mike Vaughan delighting with a few very smart guitar riffs.

The Associates Committee contributed $43,000 towards the Dux Bali Hut construction - a 6m by 9m dry Bali hut located on the foreshore of Dux Anchorage.

This takes us to the end of our reporting year, which is 30th April 2019.

Appreciation goes to all the members of the Associates Committee for their commitment and dedication throughout the year. The skills and experience that each of them contribute ensures that we confidently present our functions and raffles each year.

On behalf of the Committee, the President extended appreciation to General Manager, Brett James and his very competent management and administrative team who play a big role in helping the Committee put together Guests enjoyed a three course dinner overlooking the everything from raffle prizes to the finer details of Broadwater. The evening was a huge success all round with every function or event presented by the Committee. Spring Carnival lunch on Friday 21st September. It featured a two course lunch and fashion parade by Rivereau Sponsors on Chevron complemented with hats by Lily Dee, as well as a raffle and lucky door prizes. Melbourne Cup luncheon held on Tuesday 6th November was our last function for 2018. We had a record attendance which was wonderful to see. ASSOCIATE OF THE YEAR

SYC’s ANZAC day Marine Honour Guard and displays were once again a fitting tribute to the memory of all those lost and served in wars past and present. It is very gratifying for myself to have been able to organise this event with my dedicated crew since it’s inception. Our thanks must go to those members who committed their boats and crews for the two days,

The Associate of the Year is Margaret Mensforth.

Margaret has become the ‘little backbone’ of the Committee on raffle nights, sitting at the raffle table, greeting people and selling tickets. She readily makes herself available to assist whether she is on roster or not and is always first up at a function to help set up the tables. She can turn her hand to anything and we have “Lest we forget “ The Navigation side of the Club has been come to rely on her a great deal. Power Boat Committee Report

Hi once again, Firstly I would like to thank you for the opportunity you have given me to represent you as the Vice Commodore Power for the last two years, they have been an incredible learning curve for me. Sadly my hard earned business skills did not encompass as much negotiation and compromise, so I presume the old saying “ that you can’t teach old dogs new tricks is not quite right.

Between Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron and Southport Yacht Club we have some of the best small ship navigators on the water. I suppose I shouldn’t mention, that although seriously out numbered in the last Goodwill Cup we were just able to take the win and bring home the ‘Gold.’ We have a huge job ahead to hold on and win again in November, as RQ Commodore Mark Gallagher has once again thrown down the gauntlet, so we need all the talent and luck we can muster, please come and join in the fun and games.

With the season ended and Power and Sail Presentation night’s completed we have to reset all of next seasons event courses and then maybe some time to recoup before Sail Past in September and the start of the 19/20 season.

Your Board along with our GM Brett, have worked tirelessly on new areas of development to keep the Club future proofed. The finalisation of the Spit Master Plan has put an end to some of the waiting as our major plans have been dependent on the allocation of land areas for both our Eastern and Western developments, which are for small boat racking on Humphrey’s old slipway site and the larger Super Yacht berth on the Broadwater to the west, now we may see some action.

I would like to thank my Power Boat Committee for their time and effort and extend that thanks to all of our committees for their dedication as the club could not function without them .... you are our unsung legends. My gratitude also goes to our dedicated staff members from all departments, you all deserve a pat on the back as your cooperation makes our job just so much easier.

Our Power Boat Division of the Club is running smoothly, with good numbers participating in the seasons I am looking forward to the next term and it’s challenges.

Financial Position

Treasurer’s Report

The Club’s balance sheet continues to improve as a result of profitable operation and because the amount of long-term berth lease income received in advance has reduced annually. Total cash is $3.3million.

Funds for Marina repairs and future development

Results After six consecutive years of increases in revenue and pre-depreciation profit1 our profit was lower this year despite a significant increase in revenue from $12.6M to $13.9M.

We now have a total of $2.6million set aside for major Marina repairs and developments in future years, including $710k from this year’s result. (Refer note 6 in the Financial Report). Current estimates indicate $5million could be required for upgrades to the marina by 2025, although this estimate is currently being reassessed by the Waterfront Committee. Extension of the decking and covers east and west of the Club will likely be funded from the Building fund at a cost of $450k and the $300k to strengthen D arm is likely to come from the Future Development Fund. There are also other projects such as dry storage racking and a new superyacht berth (both of which appear in the Spit Master Plan) we may be able to undertake. Therefore, adding to the funds each year is extremely important.

General Manager’s Report

This year has seen a change in relation to my time spent on operational matters (which I do miss) and focus on seeing the Clubs future. After spending 3 years on the Spit Master Plan, the land both North and West of Main Beach has now been approved for Southport Yacht Club.

Now we start negotiating the term of the lease and what projects will fit within the Club’s strategic plan, and then approval from the members.

The introduction of the Assistant General Manager, Katie Lister, has seen the Club continue to grow along with improved vision on Club events. Once again, the Club’s net result was good, but I do feel its difficult to make a larger profit without the Super Yacht focus in the Marina.

In last year’s report I mentioned Oxenford Watersports Centre; well it has been operating for over 6 months now. Youth Sailing programs have been moved from Hollywell to Oxenford due to the safe environment and being close to schools. We have seen an increased number of kids participating in courses then purchasing boats and moving over to Hollywell. The Cafe and storage facilities were hard the first few months but I’m happy to say all storage areas are now leased out, and along with the Cafe, covering costs.

Well done to the Navigation Power boaties after the Goodwill Cup being returned to Southport Yacht Club. I know RQ desperately want it back so start focusing on the event now!!

If you haven’t been to Dux lately please go and have a look. The Bali hut, fire pit and turf all look amazing. It’s a great place to relax with friends after a long day on the water or for a fish!

Personally, I feel that all members and staff now have an opportunity to secure the future footprint of Southport Yacht Club for many generations ahead. I’m excited and I hope you are.
