Exciting Progress on the Marina Redevelopment

The past six months have marked a significant chapter in our Club’s history, with the Marina redevelopment project now well underway. Under the guidance of our Project Manager, and in collaboration with the Waterfront Committee, Board, and Management, we’ve completed multiple rounds of planning, design, and product selection, all tailored to suit our unique waterfront environment.

We’re proud to share that the 90% Design Review has been completed, and confidence is high that the final result will be a world-class, modern facility. This new Marina will not only meet the expectations of our Members and Supporters but also ensure long-term durability and functionality.

Construction has officially commenced, with the first arm now cleared. Members and Supporters will begin to notice visible progress. While we acknowledge there may be some temporary disruptions, particularly around dining hours, we are working closely with the Contractor to

minimise noise and maintain a pleasant experience for all.

This is a long-term project, expected to span approximately three years. We sincerely thank you for your patience and support throughout this journey, we can’t wait to welcome you to your new Marina once it’s complete.

Dux – Your Island Retreat

As the weather warms up, Dux is looking more stunning than ever thanks to the ongoing care from Brian and Donna. Exclusive to Gold Members, Dux offers a tranquil island escape perfect for relaxing with friends. Pack a picnic, fire up the BBQs, and enjoy the Bali-hut overlooking the water, it’s the ideal spot to unwind and catch a breathtaking sunset with a cold drink in hand.

Celebrating Excellence

We’re thrilled to announce that Southport Yacht Club has been named Queensland Sailing CLUB OF THE YEAR! In early November, Yachting Manager Matthew Dickinson travelled to Sydney for the national award presentations, a proud

moment for our entire community.

A

Heartfelt Thank You

None of this would be possible without the dedication and professionalism of our entire Team, from our Leadership Team in Management to our School-Based Trainees. Their commitment is truly unmatched.

We also extend our deepest gratitude to our Volunteers. Whether assisting with onwater activities or contributing through our Committees, their efforts help shape the future of our Club. Many of our new Yachting Events and initiatives begin as ideas from Members and Supporters and are brought to life through Committee collaboration.

Thank you to everyone who plays a role in making Southport Yacht Club one of the best Clubs around!

COMMODORE

GLENN BURRELL

Dear Members, Supporters, and Friends of Southport Yacht Club,

As we draw closer to the end of Southport Yacht Club’s 79th year it is timely to reflect on some of the highlights and achievements in what has been another very busy year of Sailing, Power Boating and Social Events.

As stated in my previous InSYnC article, Southport Yacht Club was very well represented in the 2025 Gladstone Ports Corporation Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race hosted by QCYC. The results of our competitors far exceeded expectations with our Members taking out 7 of the top 10 placings in the highly contested IRC Division. 1st and 2nd place in IRC TwoHanded, and 2nd place in Multihull OMR. Well done to all.

Many ventured north in the 2nd Annual GCCM Gold Coast to Mackay Yacht Race which continues to grow in stature and participation. Mackay Marina Village put on a carnival atmosphere which attracted thousands of locals down to the docks

to watch the finish and welcome the competitors.

The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise Regatta was once again a huge success incorporating the QLD Yachting Championships. Congratulations to all competitors and well done to the podium finishers in all divisions. Our Club really shone during this event, held annually on the King’s Birthday Weekend for the past 3 years. Next year we have been honoured to host the Australian Yachting Championships incorporated during Sail Paradise.

Southport Yacht Club recently won the Best Yacht Club (Cat A) at the Australian Sailing QLD Yachting awards held in Brisbane. We have now been nominated as a finalist in Australian Sailing National Awards to be held on November 14th. The accolades and acknowledgement are testament to all our Staff and Management who strive to host the best possible events for Members, Supporters and visitors. The hard work behind the scenes from our various Committee Members who volunteer

their time to steer each department they represent cannot be ignored. These awards belong to each and every one of you.

Lastly, I would like to extend my personal thanks to all the SYC Volunteers including the Associates Committee. Along with the generous support of all our sponsors we could simply not operate without them. Please support all of our Sponsors whenever you can as they support us on our boating journeys.

On behalf of my wife, Karen and I, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in 2026, Southport Yacht Clubs 80th Birthday.

Glenn Burrell Commodore

Hello Members and

Supporters,

GENERAL MANAGER BRETT JAMES

It has started!!! The Marina rebuild is underway, a big thank you must go to the Waterfront Committee, Board and Mark the Waterfront Manager, along with the Marina Team. To get to this stage has taken over a year with many more hours in the future. We have been able to accommodate all the Members on G Arm due to it being the smallest arm but moving forward will see Members moving out for a few months as we move through the schedule of works. The Marina, when finished, will be the best in the country and with the addition of the Mega Yacht Berth will see this Club recognised worldwide. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact myself or Mark Riddell.

Oxenford Watersports Centre over the last few months has seen a massive increase in participation. Just over the last few weeks we have seen 162 kids enrol in Term 4 courses from Learn to Sail right through to our Racing Teams who compete nationally, and as I send this email 2 SYC Sailors are competing overseas. Over the September school holidays we introduced 320 kids to Sailing though holiday Sailing programs, with Cadet membership (members under 18) being the fastest growing category of Membership at SYC. This is not possible without the hard work from Challenge Wells (Head of Academy) and his Team. Last week if you were out at the lake you would have

seen the Uni Sport Nationals. This event saw over 130 races in 3 days, another big effort from the Team. If you haven’t been out to the Watersports Centre I suggest you go grab a coffee and have a walk around the lake, its very peaceful.

Hollywell and Main Beach Sailing has once again been a hive of activity. The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise was a great success with many boats coming from around Queensland. A special shout out to Chair Kerry Noyes who, with her new boat, won the event. You can check out all results in the Yachting News. A few less events over the last few months as the Team had a break while Members were competing in away events such as GCCM Gold Coast to Mackay and then Hamilton Island Race Week, once again many good results from Members. Sail Past and Breaking of the Flag were memorable events, and I think this was probably a record in Cadet numbers on water for the Sail Past, however, it was a little disappointing with less Members boats this year. I understand it’s not easy to get the boat out just for the Blessing but its only once a year and the Club doesn’t ask for much, if anything. It’s a great fun day every year and is a part of the Clubs history.

The Mega Yacht berth saw the amazing HMAS Diamantina berthed, along with the viewing of their Sunset Ceremony performed by the Crew. What a night for all the public to witness alongside the berth

from the park. Keep an eye out for the next Navy vessel as it may not be far away!!!

Events galore as normal, this year will see 4 Melbourne Cup Events across Main Beach and Hollywell, Halloween, a few dinner shows and the normal Member monthly events. The birthday dinner night is now also held at Hollywell on the 3rd Thursday of the month. This will assist Member and Supporters who live near Hollywell and can’t make the 3rd Tuesday at Main Beach. After 3 months we have already seen the numbers double every month, so a great idea from Katie the Operations Manager, well done.

If you didn’t hear the Club won “Club of the Year for Queensland” awarded from Sailing Australia. Yachting Manager, Matthew Dickinson, will head to Sydney for the final announcement, so fingers crossed! To win this award involves everyone, we are all a part of the Clubs success. Do we always get it right? No, but it’s important we all stay positive and focus on the good and work on improving where it’s needed.

Once again thank you to all Members, Supporters, Board, Staff and Volunteers for making your Club a great Club.

CUP DAY IN FULL BLOOM

FOUR CELEBRATIONS, ONE UNFORGETTABLE DAY

It was another spectacular Melbourne Cup Day at Southport Yacht Club, with Members, Supporters and guests celebrating in true SYC style across four sold-out Events.

The morning began with a light sprinkle of rain, just enough to cool things down before the sunshine returned for an afternoon filled with food, fashion, and fun by the water.

At Main Beach, guests indulged in a stunning seated banquet featuring Chef’s selection of delicious meals, seafood, flowing drinks, and unbeatable Marina views. The Western Deck came alive with Chef’s fabulous canapés and a welcome drink to start the day in style. Upstairs, the Associates Melbourne Cup Luncheon was another standout success, featuring an elegant three-course meal and plenty of laughter.

Meanwhile, over at Hollywell, our ever-popular Melbourne Cup celebration sold out first, treating guests to a relaxed waterfront setting with a delicious seafood buffet and drinks package.

Across every venue, the excitement was contagious, sweeps, raffles, live music, dancing, and of course, the big race broadcast on the big screen. The atmosphere captured everything we love about Cup Day: great company, fantastic food, and plenty of fun.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an unforgettable day. We can’t wait to do it all again next year at Southport Yacht Club, where the Melbourne Cup spirit truly shines!

VC SAIL

V.C. SAIL WAYNE KIRBY

I am always amazed at what we can achieve as a Club especially in all the areas of Sailing. The last 6 months have seen SYC host some excellent Events and showcased our great city and our water ways.

Offshore is always busy. In July we hosted the finish of the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race with a total of 61 boats competing. Some early rough conditions saw a number of boats retire but those that did make it enjoyed the 24 hour hospitality offered by SYC. Well done to SYC yachts, Esprit and Awen for competing in the race.

That yacht race was closely followed by the start of the GCCM Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race with 27 boats competing. The welcome party was well attended and well appreciated. The Mackay race got off in some brisk but fantastic conditions for Sailing. Tune into our SYC YouTube channel to watch the exciting start showing the 100ft Wild Thing powering up over the start line with the stunning GC skyline behind it. The race itself was hotly contested and eventful with a number of retirements. The added challenge of weather conditions dropping out north of Gladstone made predicting the winner difficult.  Mackay City really turned on the welcome with a festival on the foreshore attracting over 2000 people in warm sunny weather. Sun Fish came away with

the IRC and ORC trophies, Wild Thing 100 made line hours with only one rudder and Cyan Moon won on PHS.

Our junior sailors were well represented at Yeppoon for Zhik Qld Youth week. This entailed 3 days of training followed by 3 days of racing. Shortly after that another group of Academy youth headed south to Lake Macquarie for another exiting week of Sailing. Oxenford hosted the University Sailing Games in October. The race team organised over 130 races across 3 days and by all accounts it was a great event.

Sail Paradise saw 37 boats competing over 3 days with conditions ranging from clear, sunny days to heavy 20 knots of wind and sharp ocean chop. Sailors had a great time, sharing stories and enjoying the facilities in the main bar after the day’s racing. Thanks to the Yachting Office and our RO Dennis Thompson for organising a wonderful event. This year Sail Paradise included the Qld Yachting Championships. Next year we will be hosting the Australian Yachting Championships, so we are expecting an even bigger event and another exciting 3 days of sailing.

Hollywell always has a full program. The Off the Beach Cats with Paper Tiger National Champs at Hollywell was huge. Dinghy Sailing on Sundays are always a spectacle to watch and on Thursdays we have the Academy youth training right in front of

the Club. Great entertainment to watch from the restaurant as the sun goes down. On Wednesdays and most Saturdays, we have Inshore fleet racing and Tuesday and Thursday, Sailablity operate their well needed programmes from the Club.

The Club has initiated the Coral Sea Point Score Trophy for our offshore special events. The trophy will go to the best performing boat in the 4 special offshore events. Flat Rock, Julian Rocks, Cook Island, and the GC Mackay Races are all included. Good luck to all the competitors.

Boats in all divisions are regularly looking for crew, so if you would like to join in the fun, please make yourself known to myself or the race office. There is also room for more Skippers and boats on the water. If you would like to know how to get involved, please contact the Club and we can show you the ropes.

I’ll sign off now but thank you again to all the Volunteers and SYC Staff that make all these wonderful Events happen. And thank you to the skippers and sailors who bring the fun of competition to the Club.

Fair winds and close racing.

16th SAIL PARADISE

The 16th Sail Paradise regatta was again held on the Queensland King’s Birthday Long Weekend. With 32 boats hitting the water on Day One, crews were treated to ideal conditions—clear skies, steady breeze, and a rolling seaway, setting the tone for what’s expected to be one of the most competitive regattas in Sail Paradise history.

Southport Yacht Club Commodore Glenn Burrell, skipper of reigning champion Black Diamond, was back to defend his title against a fleet of top-tier competitors from across Queensland, NSW, Victoria, and New Zealand. “It’s fantastic to see such a strong and diverse fleet again this year,” said Burrell. “The energy on the docks this morning shows just how much this regatta means to the sailing community.”

Day Two brought a change of pace for competitors, as light morning winds delayed the start of racing before conditions improved to deliver a spectacular afternoon on the Gold Coast.

Crews spent the morning cruising and patiently awaiting the call to start, before a fresh breeze rolled through around midday, setting the stage for close, tactical racing across all divisions.

“Days like today really test a crew’s focus and teamwork,” said Southport Yacht Club Commodore Glenn Burrell. “Once the wind filled in, it was all go, great to see the fleet powered up and enjoying the day.”

After a weekend of shifting weather patterns, Day Three delivered exhilarating racing conditions and dramatic downwind runs, with a strong northerly breeze propelling the

fleet down the stunning Gold Coast coastline from Southport to Burleigh Heads for the final showdown of the regatta.

The regatta continues to be proudly supported by Experience Gold Coast, along with key event partners The Yacht Sales Co., Club Marine, XXXX, Dufour Yachts, TRYP by Wyndham Southport, and Dreamworld Australia.

A stellar media team captured on water and aerial content of each day of the action, including an on-water FPV pilot who donned goggles and braved seasickness to zip and weave through the many moving variables to capture some incredible cockpit scenes, tight racing, starboard calls and spinnaker hoists. Our She Sails representative Jasmine Ruck returned for a second year and shined as the regatta’s onshore dock interviewer, and screens around the Clubhouse displayed all the

FLAGSHIP REGATTA!

fresh antics captured each day. A huge thank you to the entire media team for their excellent production, editing and time management skills to meet the demanding daily schedule.

Congratulations to the Queensland Yachting Champions Aramex Shining Sea in IRC Division 1, and Stratacare Racing Flyaway in IRC Division 2. Lesprit won PHS Division 1 and Accomplice won Division 2. For full coverage

and results, head to the dedicated regatta website sailparadise. com.au, The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise page on Facebook, and the SYC YouTube Channel at @southportyachtclubgoldcoast.

The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise Regatta returns in 2026 on the 2nd to 5th October, hosting the Australian Yachting Championships and drawing a fleet from around the country.

GCCM GOLD COAST MACKAY YACHT RACE 2025

Australia’s newest ocean race returned for a 2nd year in 2025 and surpassed all expectations. The fleet size almost doubled from the inaugural 2024 race to 29 crews taking on the epic start line off Cavill Avenue. Spinnakers filled as the cannon was fired and Grant Wharington’s 100-footer Wild Thing 100, returning from last year but with a full-sized mast and larger wardrobe of sail soon led the fleet downwind, tracing the Rhumb line towards the tip of K’gari.

Conditions were far more comfortable than day 1 of 2024, however two unfortunate incidents just before and after the start saw the Southport Yacht Club Race Control team spring into full incident management mode, with a crew member requiring emergency evac off Wedgetail within minutes before the cannon. Mayfair, who lost their lifelines early in 2024, was once again forced to retire not long after the start, with several injuries and total mast and rigging loss causing complete disablement. With SYC assistance all impacted were returned to shore safely.

By Day Two, the Race control, Village and Media team were in Mackay, setting up the Race Village ready for the arriving fleet. All eyes were on the Live Tracker, with supermaxi Wild Thing 100 tracking its way through the islands and within range of breaking their Line Honours record of 35 hours and 35 minutes, until rudder failure caused them to adjust and slow their pace in their final approach late in the evening. The inaugural GCCM Line Honours Perpetual Trophy was presented on the docks at Mackay Marina Village that night, by Vice Commodore of Southport Yacht Club Wayne Kirby, and Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson.

Word had certainly spread around Mackay since last year and a huge local crowd surpassing 3000 had gathered on Day 3, enjoying the Race Village vibe and Markets in anticipation of the arriving fleet. Perhaps it was the Melbourne Cup style ‘Boat Battle’ competition run by local radio stations that helped raise interest in the race as hundreds of families had taken up position on the Southern Breakwater Wall for a view of the finish line. Incredibly, there were only minutes to spare between Sydney based TP52 Koa, Geoffrey Hill’s

72foot Antipodes from Sydney/Hong Kong and Brian Petersen’s Andrews52 V5 from Auckland, all arriving before sunset to the welcoming crowd.

The Race Village, Media and Race Control teams were kept just as busy as the offshore fleet thereafter with a slew of changing weather patterns offshore throwing out estimated arrival times. Holes, tides and route decisions saw many positions changing throughout the night, however, it soon became apparent the entire remaining fleet would be arriving one after the other from midnight to midday. Two further boats retired from the race, She and Yendys.

Once ashore, crews on Day Four were soaking up the dawn sunrise, burgers, beers and hot showers, and the hospitality of the Sails Sports Bar throughout the day until the evening Race Presentation.

Returning competitor Arnold Seaward and his Cyan Moon from Royal Brighton Yacht Club in Melbourne won Overall PHS with a corrected time of 3 days, 1 hour and 16 minutes, whilst fellow returning competitor and local SYC competitor Sun Fish, skippered by Justin Johnson claimed both overall IRC and ORC perpetual trophies for 2025 with a corrected time of 2 days, 21 hours and 45 minutes.

As we look forward to 2026, we are pleased to confirm that Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (GCCM) will once again hold the naming rights of this race. The fleet was bigger, the crowds were larger and the atmosphere more welcoming this year and as a team, Southport Yacht Club is keen to ensure this event becomes even better and a major must-do fixture on the Australian/NZ Yachting calendar. Some 10 boats have already pledged to race next year, and that is before entries have even opened!

POWER

VC POWER

V.C. POWER JUSTIN SINNAMON

Our Club continues to deliver on its core functions of Sailing, recreational boating, Cruising, and Navigation Events, providing an education for all and camaraderie for those with a common interest of boating and being on the water.

On the Power Boat side of things we have commenced the season with a 6 Day ‘Canalpin’ Cruise, a 5 Day Logan River cruise, and 10 Day Brisbane River cruise all well attended, This time of year has the Melbourne Cup Cruise in the lower part of Moreton Bay, including Melbourne Cup Lunch on Russel Island.

In Navigation, we have kicked off the season with the Dux Series, attracting 8 boats in the first GPS Event, and 5 in the Traditional Navigation Cutty Sark Trophy, while providing a weekend social outing with an opportunity to practice overnight ‘seakeeping’ anchored off at Dux. Good to see the well experienced ‘Mahogany’ crew take out first place in the GPS Event and ‘Rare Pleasure’ come first in traditional (also seasoned competitors).

The Goodwill Cup hosted by RQYS has again been held and SYC Members showed up in force to attempt to bring the Goodwill Cup back to SYC in 2025. Sixteen Boats from SYC joined the 21 RQYS Boats to navigate around Moreton Bay by either GPS or traditionally, from Myora down past Peel and Goat Islands, across to Stradbroke Island, back over towards Coochie, and down through Pelican Banks with an overnighter at Canaipa Point. SYC didn’t win but thanks RQYS for another great weekend of shared camaraderie and fun and congratulations on your win.

We look forward to continuing the Cruising and Navigation season ahead, with many more knowledge sharing and social days on water to come.

Come along and get involved with your Club. Check the SYC website for all the ‘Power Boat’ related activities coming up.

NOVEMBER 2025

DECEMBER 2025

JANUARY 2026

YACHTING MANAGER MATTHEW DICKINSON

It has been a busy period for Southport Yacht Club as we continue to strengthen our position as one of Australia’s leading Sailing organisations. I am delighted to share that SYC was named Australian sailing QLD Club of the Year and has been announced as a National Finalist to be awarded later in the year. A testament to the dedication of our Members, Volunteers, Coaches, Staff and Supporters who continually raise the standard of our Club.

Safety & Education

Safety remains a cornerstone of our sailing culture. Our Sea Safety & Survival Course, subsidised by SYC and recognised as the most affordable program of its kind in Australia, continues to deliver outstanding results with every course fully sold out. My sincere thanks to Great Circle Marine and Michael Spies for their ongoing partnership and commitment to accessible safety training.

Youth Development & Cadet Success

Our Cadet Programs continue to thrive with record participation and impressive representation at state and national levels. In September, 27 Cadet Members travelled to Yeppoon for Youth Sail QLD, followed by 10 Cadets competing at the NSW Youth Championships.

Thanks to the generous support of The Moreton Group and the Associates Committee, our young sailors benefited from coaching support, shoreside assistance and professional team uniforms, presenting SYC proudly on and off the water.

We are also seeing a growing number of Cadets competing internationally and transitioning into senior pathways such as yacht racing, offshore crewing and delivery Sailing including two Cadets recently sailing aboard Windward Bound. This momentum reflects a healthy future for the sport and for SYC’s youth development pathways.

Inshore Division Female Participation

Innovation in our racing programs continues, with the Female Helm SubSeries introduced within our Inshore Division, championed by Inshore

Representative Tomoko, who has done an outstanding job promoting this initiative. The series has injected fresh energy into the fleet and is another step in strengthening female participation and leadership in our sport.

Offshore & Strong Industry Partnerships

SYC proudly hosted several major offshore events so far this year, including the GCCM Gold Coast to Mackay Yacht Race and The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise Regatta incorporating the QLD Yachting Championships. These events showcased a vibrant mix of IRC-optimised racing yachts and well-campaigned cruising vessels, highlighting the depth and diversity of our offshore fleet.

Our continued partnership with Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard remains invaluable, and on a recent visit to GCCM it was fantastic to see a significant number of SYC vessels both Power and Sail being serviced by the highly skilled trades within the precinct. Similarly, The Yacht Sales Co. has demonstrated strong engagement with our membership, supporting both buyers and sellers within our community.

Major Event Delivery & Volunteers

Another major highlight was hosting the UniSport Nationals Teams Racing, where

our race management team delivered an extraordinary 138 races over three days. This achievement speaks volumes about the professionalism and capability of our Race Officials, Volunteers and Staff.

Our Volunteers remain the backbone of our sailing operations. Their dedication contributing hundreds of hours each month allows us to deliver one of the busiest and most varied on-water programs in Australia. In the month of October there was over 667 Volunteer hours completed. On behalf of the Club, thank you.

If you are interested in Volunteering, please get in touch.

Dinghy Division Expansion

The Dinghy Division continues to post record fleet numbers, and we are currently exploring strategies to support this growth into the future ensuring we can continue offering world-class facilities and coaching to meet increasing demand. Stuart Waters the Dinghy Rep has been promoting the SYC fleet heavily and is known as a great personality around the Club. Stuart has been successful in securing the Club to host the ILCA Metros which will be run offshore. This has many ILCA sailors talking and excited for a very different regatta.

Paper Tiger State Titles

SYC were proud to host the Paper Tiger State Titles in November this year with competitors as far as Tasmania. Some fun facts about the Paper Tigers, most of the boats are hand built by their owners, SYC has the largest fleet of Paper Tigers in Australia, and they haven’t had the same winner for their State Titles for the last several years. It is a competitive fleet however they also ensure they have plenty of laughs and fun off the water.

We are here to assist every Member whether you are beginning your Sailing journey, unsure about a rating certificate, preparing for an offshore campaign, or simply looking to participate more actively in Club Sailing.

If you have any questions or would like to get more involved, please reach out to our team we are always happy to assist.

Southport Yacht Club

SYC VOLUNTEERS

VOLUNTEERS KEEPING OUR CLUB MOVING FORWARD

Southport Yacht Club’s events calendar has been bursting with activity, and at the heart of it all are our incredible Volunteers. From November 2024 to April 2025, they contributed over 1,430 hours of their time, skills, and energy — helping to deliver another season of seamless, safe, and successful Sailing.

This period saw four key Sailing Events, each made possible thanks to the efforts of our Volunteer Team:

• Ted Elkes Memorial Regatta

• Cat Weekend

• Two-Handed Race

• Cock of the Broadwater

From setting marks and managing safety Boats to coordinating race operations and assisting shoreside, every detail ran smoothly because of the people behind the scenes, our Volunteers.

We also celebrated a major milestone this season: the retirement of Noel Gatland, a longstanding Race Officer and Club Member since 1997. Noel has played a pivotal role in our Thursday Twilight racing for decades, and we extend our deepest thanks for his dedication, calm leadership, and unwavering service.

Looking ahead, it’s been exciting to welcome new Volunteers through our partnership with Volunteering Queensland’s FreddyMatch. Their enthusiasm is already making a positive impact across our Club’s operations, and it’s just the beginning.

To support everyone involved, Southport Yacht Club continues to offer Volunteer training in Race Management, Safety Boat Operation, Power Boat Handling, and First Aid, along with online learning through Australian Sailing.

Don’t forget, when you log your hours through the Volunteer Firefly App, you can access discounts on groceries, fuel, and entertainment as a small thank you for your time and support.

Whether you’re a seasoned Volunteer or just getting started, your contribution helps shape the success and culture of our Club. Thank you for being part of it.

Want to join the Team? Contact volunteers@sycgc.com.au to get involved.

HMAS DIAMANTINA

The Southport Yacht Club’s Mega Yacht Berth has once again proven itself to be a premier destination for distinguished vessels, recently hosting the impressive HMAS Diamantina (II). The arrival of this Royal Australian Navy Minehunter created great excitement across the Gold Coast, drawing interest from members, locals, and maritime enthusiasts alike.

From the moment HMAS Diamantina berthed, there was a palpable sense of pride throughout the Club. Captain Lieutenant Commander Sam Mairs and his crew were warmly welcomed by our dedicated Marina Team, who assisted in securing the vessel with professionalism and care. Having such an important Navy ship alongside our Mega Yacht Berth was a tremendous honour, and it was wonderful to see so many people drawn to the waterfront to witness this special occasion.

One of the highlights of the visit was the Sunset Ceremony, performed by the ship’s crew. This traditional naval ritual, featuring precision drills, ceremonial lighting, and gunfire, captivated an audience gathered in Jack Gordon Park. Families, children, Members & Supporters, and visitors stood shoulderto-shoulder as the sun dipped behind the hinterland, creating a breathtaking backdrop for a ceremony steeped in naval heritage.

The atmosphere was electric, a blend of awe, respect, and community pride. For many, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness such a display up close, and it will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the standout moments of the year at Southport Yacht Club.

As HMAS Diamantina (II) departed, we offered our heartfelt thanks to the Captain and crew. Their professionalism, warm engagement with the community, and willingness to share their time and traditions left a lasting impression on all who visited the berth. Hosting them was a privilege, and the entire Club extends its appreciation for their service and their memorable stay.

Southport Yacht Club looks forward to continuing our strong relationship with the Royal Australian Navy, and with so much activity on the horizon, we encourage everyone to keep an eye on the Mega Yacht Berth, the next Navy vessel may not be far away!

Fair winds and following seas to HMAS Diamantina (II). We hope to welcome her back again soon.

Set off on an incredible 14-day East Africa safari, journeying through two captivating countries and experiencing up to 15 exhilarating game drives. On this exclusive departure, you’ll be accompanied by a Travelmarvel representative, a dedicated Tour Director and local guides, ensuring a seamless and enriching adventure from start to finish.

This rapturous adventure blends life-changing wildlife encounters with immersive cultural experiences and stays in distinctive accommodation nestled within pristine wilderness. With comprehensive inclusions, you’ll explore the essential highlights of Kenya and Tanzania, with the freedom to add unique activities along the way.

Tick off some of Africa’s most iconic destinations: gaze at the snowcapped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, traverse the golden plains of the Maasai Mara, explore Serengeti National Park, and descend into the World-Heritage-listed Ngorongoro Crater — each teeming with the dazzling wildlife that defines the African safari experience.

Your safari begins in Amboseli National Park, where Mount Kilimanjaro provides a breathtaking backdrop to your first game drive. Search for hippos, waterfowl, and park’s signature herds of elephants. Continue to Lake Nakuru National Park, home to the rare white rhino and leopards, before heading to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, famed for its big cats, including leopards, lions and cheetahs, and regarded as one of the best wildlife spotting destinations in all of Africa. During the seasonal Great Migration, you may witness the incredible spectacle of enormous herds of wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, travelling across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. In Serengeti National Park, one of the premier destinations to view Africa’s Big Five, board your jeep for a sunrise game drive in search of lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros and buffalo. Then, descend into Ngorongoro Crater, a natural amphitheatre teeming with wildlife, from vibrant flamingos to proud lions: the largest concentration found anywhere on Earth.

Adventure

Between game drives, unwind in premium lodges and tented camps that blend comfort with authentic local charm. At Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge, take a dip in the free-form pool overlooking the acaciastudded savanna in the shadows of Mount Kilimanjaro. Venture by 4WD to Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge, located on a range of hills that form the western limits of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, offering spectacular views over Lake Nakuru. In the Maasai Mara, sip sundowners at Zebra Plains Mara Camp, where giraffes, zebras and impalas roam freely across the expansive plains. In the heart of Serengeti National Park, sleep under the stars at Kati Kati Tented Camp in spacious traditional tents with en suite bathroom. Hear the call of the wild as creatures including hyenas and buffaloes frequent the camp after dark. Conclude your safari with a stay at Mount Meru Game Lodge, home to a sanctuary for orphaned wildlife, preparing for their return to the wild.

Beyond the wildlife on your Kenya and Tanzania safari, your journey offers meaningful cultural connections. In Amboseli National Park, visit a local Maasai village and discover the vibrant culture and lifestyle of the Maasai people, famous for their distinctive shaved heads, colourful garments and jewellery, and jumping dance. Enjoy a guided walk through the village and admire the hand-built mud huts, topped with a roof made from a mixture of grass, cattle dung, mud and ash to create a natural, durable, waterproof barrier. As you journey from Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Crater, visit Olduvai Gorge to explore one of the world’s most important archaeological sites, commonly known as the ‘Cradle of Mankind’. It was here that palaeontologist Mary Leakey discovered the skull of an early human ancestor. In 1979, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, including Olduvai Gorge, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. At Mount Meru Game Lodge in Arusha, celebrate a memorable safari at a Farewell Dinner.

Southport Yacht Club Marina Maintenance Update

Southport Yacht Club’s comprehensive Marina Maintenance and Upgrade Programme is now well underway, marking an exciting step forward in enhancing our world-class facilities. The works, being carried out by Marine Structures, are progressing steadily through G Arm, where the old infrastructure is being carefully removed and replaced with brand-new piles, sleeves, and caps. The team is also assembling and installing modern pontoons, ensuring the Marina continues to meet the highest standards of safety, durability, and functionality.

We are pleased to report that all works are currently on schedule, with vessels expected to return to their berths on G Arm by 19 December 2025. Following this, we will move on to F Arm, and all berth holders have been advised that vessels must vacate their berths by 16 January 2026 to allow the next phase of works to commence smoothly.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of our Members & Supporters. and berth holders during this period. While maintenance programmes can sometimes cause short-term inconvenience, these upgrades will ensure that Southport Yacht Club continues to offer one of the most modern and efficient marinas in Australia.

Once completed, the improved infrastructure will enhance the overall experience for all who use our facilities – from visiting yachts and long-term berth holders to our Club Members and Supporters.

This is indeed a very exciting time for Southport Yacht Club as we continue to invest in the future of our Marina, ensuring it remains a premier destination for boating enthusiasts across the Gold Coast and beyond.

Sailing into Summer: Celebrating Achievement and Looking Ahead

As we head into another summer season at the Academy, it’s inspiring to reflect on what has been a truly remarkable few months. From hosting National Championships to growing the next generation of sailors, our community continues to grow in size. With new milestones reached and exciting upcoming events, this summer promises to be another unforgettable chapter.

September was an Event ful month for our youth sailors, with 27 Cadets representing Southport Yacht Club at Zhik Youth Sail Queensland 2025, Yeppoon. Many placing in the top 10 for their division. And a few securing 1st 2nd and 4th. A week later, 10 of these cadets then headed south to compete at Zhik Youth Sail NSW 2025, Torronto. We are very proud of all our Cadet sailors who competed. Additionally, 2 of our cadet sailors went on to represent Australia at the Eastern Seaboard Regatta 2025, Royal Varuna Yacht Club, Thailand. One of which was recently accepted into the Australian Optimist Development Squad, and placed 8th at the event. These performances reflect not just skill, but also the dedication and teamwork that define our sailors, their families and our Club.

Meanwhile, back at the Oxenford Watersports Centre, we had the honour of hosting the UniSport Nationals Team Sailing Regatta 2025, an incredible Event that brought together 12 teams from 8 universities across Australia. With 80 competitors, it was a thrilling showcase

of collaboration, competition, and community spirit. Our team of Volunteers, Officials, and Coaches ensured the regatta ran seamlessly, once again highlighting Southport Yacht Club as a premier Club on the national stage.

We also continue to strengthen our partnerships with schools, delivering Sailing Experiences and Learn to Sail programs for over 20 schools across South East Queensland. Through our Future Stars Scholarship program, students showing outstanding potential are allowed to train, grow, and receive the support they need to pursue their sailing aspirations through the Academy pathways.

As we look ahead, our sailors and coaches are preparing for an exciting calendar of events, including the Optimist State Championships, Sail Brisbane, ILCA Nationals in Tasmania, and the Optimist Nationals in Tasmania. These regattas mark the perfect opportunity for our athletes to test their skills, represent the Academy, and continue building their competitive experience on a national stage.

Of course, no summer would be complete without the return of our School Holiday Sailing program. Over the next two months, hundreds of young sailors will take to the water to learn, play, and connect through sailing. We further welcome our signature community celebration, Summer on the Lake, taking place on Sunday, 25 January 2026. This much-loved event brings together families, friends, and the wider community for a day of discovery, fun, and the joy of sailing.

We at the Academy are always striving to be Australia’s premier Sailing centre. Providing the highest quality programs and creating a welcoming environment for everyone, made possible through the dedication and care of our team of instructors, administrators and Volunteers. The weekends are full of activity yearround, with learn-to sail , team training and racing run across our many venues, for kids, teens and adults. We are proud to say, there is something available to everyone, of all ages and abilities, at Southport Yacht Club.

None of these achievements would be possible without the ongoing support of our Sailing family. We extend our heartfelt thanks to The Associates Committee and The Moreton Group, whose generous funding continues to empower our sailors and programs. We’re also deeply grateful to our Volunteers, parents, and Supporters who dedicate their time and passion to keeping our Academy strong.

As we move into the new year, we do with pride in what we’ve achieved and excitement for what’s still to come. From first-time sailors to national champions, every success is built on the same foundation, our shared love of Sailing and the incredible community that makes it all possible.

Here’s to another summer of learning and adventure,

See you on the water!

THURSDAY TWILIGHT

JESS GREENWOOD

Hello Southport Yacht Club Members and Supporters. The Twilight fleet has had a stellar winter and start to spring, how was yours?

The Twilight Fleet has evolved over time. In my 6 years of Sailing at the Club, I’ve seen boats and sailors come and go, new boats to replace them and familiar faces return to the Club. Our Twilight family is continuously growing and expanding in new ways every day. Whether its an SYC Member who’s returned from other adventures or one who’s upgraded from one boat to the next, new members being welcomed into our Thursday family, a Thursday sunset is hard to beat with the right people.

Winter saw some interesting nights on the water. Anyone who’s anyone in the sailing world on the Gold Coast knows all about the fickle nature of winter winds. Whether it be wild westerlies causing trouble on the Broadwater or dying breeze as the sun sets, our Thursday Twilighters take all in their stride and enjoy our waters the way we know best. With friends, laughs and a few beers to celebrate life on the water. We have such a diverse range of boats and sailors at our Club. From 26 footers to 50 footers. From grandkids of skippers and newcomers who have always wanted to sail a boat, the ones who are just happy to to be on the water, to the old hands, the ones who’ve been sailing for decades and still come each week, rain, hail or shine on a Thursday to partake in this sport we love.

Our Winter Series saw our 2 divisions tackle some challenging conditions. In our Division 1 fleet, we had 12 yachts on the water. A big welcome to Touché42, a new addition to our family. Joining our Commodore as the next super 42 around town, Greg and his crew “took a step up” and brought a new weapon into the Club. With many of our boats preparing for the Whitsunday racing calendar, it was anyone’s guess who the series would go to. Overall, in 3rd place for our Winter Series was Hutchies Yeah Baby with yours truly on board. Andy Lamont and his crew have been a fixture around our Club for quite some time and there wont be a night go by on the water without the happy shout from another boat, “YEAH BABY”. In 2nd place was a familiar favourite, Russell Birse and XVitesse. Russell and his crew are always a threat to be reckoned with, Sailing each and every week with the same smiles and sportsmanship that we all love and know, Our winner for the Winter Twilight Series was Justin Johnson and his crew on Sunfish and they didn’t just stop at the Twilight Series. The Sunfast 3300 sailed an incredible series and went on to win the GCCM Gold Coast to Mackay Race in IRC and ORC overall. A huge congratulations to Justin and his crew.

Our Division 2 yachts had a few challenges with several nights with unfavourable conditions. Heavy tides and little to no breeze saw for some short, or long afternoons. Our 11 yachts enjoyed each and every one with the camaraderie only sailors know. In 3rd place for the Winter Series was Colin Metcher, his son Simon and their crew on Cool Change. Another familiar favourite with a wealth of knowledge, a Member for nearly 50 years at SYC, Colin is on the water, welcoming new crew into our sport, and having a blast on his Noelex 30. In 2nd place in the Winter series was Accomplice, skippered by Murray Bucknall. Murray is another one of our SYC sailors who has been around our waters and

our Club for many years and a true asset to our Sailing family. Our winner for the Winter Series was Rogue One, owned by Rod West and Gary Green. Our Sailing family will know Rod and Gary by many boats in their time at SYC, but they proved that going a little ‘Rogue’, entering the Division 2 fleet, paid off for them this winter. A massive congratulations to them and we look forward to watching them in the future, back on their yacht, Esprit for the Spring and Summer Series.

Our Spring Series is well underway. I wont give anything away just yet so if you’re curious to see how our fleet is progressing or you want to get involved, contact our Yachting Office. We have a new Head of Volunteers, Mike Latter who has been an incredible addition to our team. Mike has taken over the responsibilities of Sail Pass and has an amazing new Volunteer, Brigette, who is eager to help newcomers jump onboard for a Thursday sail.

As sailors, we couldn’t enjoy this sport the way we do without the support of our Sailing Office and Volunteers. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Selah Leighton for his dedication to our fleet. Selah was our guy on a Thursday and we are incredibly proud to see him progressing in his yachting career. We’ll miss you and hope to see you on the water agains soon. To Kayla Boothby, our newest member of the Sailing Office team, thank you for your hard work on and off water, within our fleet and our other fleets. To our Volunteers, what can we say, you’re always there for us and we couldn’t do it without you.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the people who have made the last 6 years magical. A Thursday night on the water as the sun is setting with the wind in my hair, sets my soul on fire and I couldn’t imagine a better way to spend an afternoon.

See you on the water.. or off for a beer!!

SYC GOLF PRESIDENT

Since the last report, we’ve enjoyed rounds at Ocean Shores, Coolangatta Tweed, Parkwood, The Glades and Windaroo. Thankfully, the weather has finally been on our side after a very wet start to the golfing year.

We have just two games left this year – at Parkwood and Emerald Lakes – and we’re hoping for a stronger turnout, as the past couple of events saw a disappointing field of only 16 players.

If you are a Member or Supporter who plays golf, would like to learn, and would like to join us, please get in touch and I’ll add you to the contact list.

We play on the second Monday of every month, except January. - paul.valle44@gmail.com for more information

RECIPE SECRET

HEAD CHEF - CHRIS TYMKIN

Grilled Barramundi with Mango, Lime & Coconut Salad

Serves

Barramundi

Ingredients:

• 4 × 180g Barramundi fillets, skin on

• Olive oil

• Sea salt and cracked black pepper

• 1 lime, halved

Mango, Lime & Coconut Salad

Ingredients:

• 1 large ripe mango, sliced

• 1 Lebanese cucumber, ribboned

• 1 small red chilli, finely sliced (optional)

• ½ small red onion, thinly sliced

• 1 cup shredded green papaya or snow pea sprouts

• ¼ cup toasted coconut flakes

• ¼ cup fresh coriander leaves

• ¼ cup mint leaves

Chef’s Tip:

If entertaining, serve on a large platter — the colours pop beautifully. For an extra touch, add crushed roasted peanuts or a sprinkle of crispy fried shallots.

Dressing

• 2 tbsp lime juice

• 1 tbsp fish sauce

• 1 tbsp rice vinegar

• tsp brown sugar or palm sugar

• 2 tbsp coconut cream

• 1 tbsp olive oil

Method:

1. Prepare the dressing:

Whisk all dressing ingredients in a bowl until smooth. Adjust seasoning — it should taste bright, sweet, salty and creamy all at once.

2. Make the salad:

In a large bowl, combine mango, cucumber, onion, chilli, and papaya or sprouts. Add herbs and toasted coconut. Toss gently with half the dressing just before serving.

3. Cook the Barramundi:

Heat a non-stick pan or BBQ grill over medium-high heat. Rub the fish with olive oil, season with salt and pepper. Place skinside down and cook 3–4 minutes until the skin is crisp. Flip and cook another 1–2 minutes, or until just cooked through. Squeeze lime over the top to finish.

4. To serve:

Spoon salad onto plates, top with Barramundi, drizzle with remaining dressing, and scatter extra coconut and herbs.
