The last few months have certainly been a unique, unusual, and interesting time for everyone. The Club closed completely across all four sites, no competitive or social boating, no functions or events that we all enjoy so much. I think this is the first time in our history that all venues being closed at the same time has occurred!

Over time, during our renovations and changes we have managed to keep the doors open and trade throughout, until now, however this time it was out of the Club’s control.

Whilst the venues may be shut, the work on many projects certainly hasn’t. SYC have progressed further with the Super Yacht berth planning stages. With the tender process completed, and now the comparison begins, ensuring the requirements of the Club are met.

The closure of our restaurant and sporting facilities has certainly highlighted the importance of our marina infrastructure.

This was seen as an essential service, and therefore remained operating almost as normal, ensuring a stable income during

these uncertain times. Our previous Directors must be thanked for their foresight in creating such facilities for our Club. Both past and current Committees also deserve recognition for keeping the marina maintained at the highest level, and moving forward, this certainly stressed the importance of ensuring this diligence continues whilst expanding upon this incredible investment we have with the Super Yacht Berth to create an allround first class venue for Members and International visitors alike.

On another positive note, this time has allowed for General Manager Brett James, and the SYC Team to keep busy with some housekeeping around the all venues, Main Beach has been rejuvenated with a fresh coat of paint, and all venues have had a deep clean and sanitisation of all areas, front and back of house. It looks fantastic, and it’s with great thanks and appreciation to the SYC Team who pitched in and got it done.

It’s great to see the Team more than happy to lend a hand doing anything from

painting to landscaping, and it’s all done with a smile, so heart-warming to see how much our Team enjoy working at the Club, miss the members, and only want the best out of this situation for all. Again, Board and Members thank you all for your hard work and amazing attitudes.

Planning has begun for the way forward, with dining options starting again from 13th June for up to 20 people, and then it’s onwards from there. The Sailing and Power Boat Committees are working hard to ensure that the calendars will be full again when we can get back on the water, both socially and competitively.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Team, from General Manager Brett James keeping the wheels moving and assisting those who were put off when the Club shut down, through to all our Staff and Volunteers who have all put in such a wonderful effort over this period of uncertainty. And to our Members, for their patience and understanding during this time, we can’t wait to open the doors and welcome you all back to your Club!

Southport Yacht Clubs wins Queenlands’ Best Sports Club for a third consecutive year!!!!

What a great result and acknowledgement for our Club.

Winning this coveted award for 3 consecutive years will now put us in the Clubs Queensland Hall of Fame.

This is a fabulous recognition for a club not in a capital city.

A huge round of applause needs to go to Brett and his entire team. The amount of work, from many, many people, behind the scenes is why we all have a club to be proud of...........and an award winning club!!!

It really has been an honour to be Commodore for most of this period.

Recently I read a letter from one of our staff that referred to theCclub as ‘family’. This is exactly why we have a great Club. We’re not just a business, not just a restaurant or a marina, we truely are a family. This culture of both staff and members feeling like a family is one of the reasons we are having the success that we are enjoying today.

Congratulations team SYC. I’m sure we’re all frustrated and probably ‘over’ Covid-19 so lets see if we can take some positives out of it.

We’ve taken the opportunity to give our Main Beach clubhouse a facelift inside. Normally our club is open up to 18 hours per day, 7 days a week. This makes it very hard to do any sort of renovations inside without disturbing our members enjoyment of the clubhouse.

Its had a fresh coat of paint inside, cleaned, cleaned and then cleaned again to make sure everything is sanitised ready for your return.

A cafe has been introduced along with a dedicated bottle shop. We will certainly look at the results from these 2 areas to see if its something we should introduce permanently.

Some of our staff have been doing roles that are not their normal roles.

I’m sure we’ve uncovered some skills that we didn’t realise some staff had.

With several Club events being cancelled/postponed we’ve had a good look at how these events have been run and see if theres a better way to run them. Events like presentation evenings have all had to be modified this year and plenty of good ideas have come out of the modified versions, ideas we can use in future years.

With our sporting activities suspended its given me a bit more time on my hands. I must admit, I’ve really enjoyed it. As much as we can’t wait to get back on the water, the extra time at home has been great to ‘take a breath’ from our normal fast paced lives.

I’m sure we’ve all got some great thoughts on how we have used this time to change our life in some small way.

As we reopen our restaurant and look forward to getting back into top gear, it will be a little challenging for a while.

Limited numbers allowable in the restaurant will require your patience for a short while yet.

We will have to modify how we do our presentations after an on-water event for a while. Challenges we can all handle and deal with appropriately.

I want to congratulate every one of you. These have been challenging, and different times, I would understand if some members were upset over it. But you haven’t been, you’ve all accepted it for what it is and been wonderfully supportive of how we have handled it. Also our staff, with job security and uncertainty running rampant in our community, our team have been amazing. They have all accepted it for what it is and done their best to get through it as best they can.

I take my hat off to all of you.

I’ve utilised this time to do some concreting, brick laying, rendering, building etc etc. I’ve really enjoyed the time but my poor old back is telling me its time to get back to the SYC.

Enjoy yourselves as you return to our clubhouses. We’re so close now I can taste that glass of red while sitting there looking out over the water.

We are all too aware that over the past few months the world has changed dramatically, and it will continue to change for some time yet.

When the Coronavirus pandemic first impacted the SYC I couldn’t appreciate the magnitude of the task we would face – first closing down the Club then coordinating the reopening.

I can’t deny there was a feeling of panic in the air when we were advised that the Club must shutdown – we had to turn our focus from creating a place for the enjoyment of members to being a “no-go” destination for members and staff.

It was a massive task. The challenges were many, our priority being to make sure that both members and staff were OK. Simultaneously, the SYC Board had to ensure the Club’s finances were well protected and that any members or staff in need of support received it.

I’m pleased to say I’m confident all goals were achieved.

It goes without saying that we are lucky that we have a marina that generates cash flow

for the Club. This fact also reminds us of the likely benefits that will come the Club’s way once the Superyacht berth is built. I have no doubt it will secure the Club’s future.

We also turned the shutdown into a positive – we took the opportunity to refurbish some parts of the Club’s facilities: these projects included Main Beach being repainted, the outside deck being oiled and the shade sails cleaned while both Hollywell and Oxenford have also received a fresh coat of paint.

On the dining front, our popular Chef and his staff have created a new set menu that looks great. This menu will change daily, so members are provided with a wide variety of dining opportunities.

These are just a few of the things we have done during the shutdown, which are designed for the long term benefit of members. I’m also pleased to say there are many other changes that members will appreciate after we reopen and return to being fully operational.

It should be noted that we will no doubt face challenges until that time, so I can only

ask that members appreciate the efforts that are being made in their interests.

On the sailing side of things, we still don’t have a date for the resumption of sailing activities, but as soon as we hear, you will. Commodore Ray McMahon and Vice Commodore Drew Jones are at the Club nearly every day, doing what they can to get everyone back on the water ASAP. Interestingly, there is one SYC sailing championship that has been won without being on the water. We congratulate Joel Turner for winning the SYC e-Sailing Club Championship. He will now progress to the Queensland Championship and could advance all the way to the World Championship.

On a personal note, I have to say that I feel fortunate to work at Southport Yacht Club. It is no different for the staff. We are all looking forward to welcoming members back to their Club very soon.

Hello again, I hope this issue of InSync finds you all in good health and happiness. I imagine from the members who I have spoken with that most of us are flat out working on all those jobs at home we have been unable to get to or maybe just trying to avoid. I suppose it’s one of the unintended outcomes of the situation we are in.

Our General Manager Brett asked me to find some jobs for some of our staff to do at Dux, so I spent three enjoyable and productive days with a group of our young men extending the irrigation system, cleaning, painting and rebuilding the steering of the ride on mower and other maintenance that needed attention.

While we were there, Bob and Joan Kershaw arrived on there boat, and Bob just rolled up his sleeves and spent many hours working with us, Thanks again, Bob. I want to say thanks to our caretakers Brian and Donna for the great job they are doing, and the place looks a picture.

Our Clubs boating activities are still curtailed, but we are ready to start up again as soon as restrictions are lifted. Both Hollywell and Main Beach clubhouses are looking good as the shut down has given us the opportunity to clean and paint both facilities. At the risk of repeating myself, I would like to say how excellent our staff have been throughout these trying times.

Well done, everyone!

I do hope that I haven’t bored you with this article, but I find it easier to do a hard days work at Dux than to write a column when we have so little going on at the Club during this lockdown situation.

I am looking forward to seeing you on the water sooner rather than later.

Hi members and sailors Hope you are all well and safe in these trying times. Unfortunately, our sailing season had to be cancelled early. Still, the majority of races for the whole year had been completed, and as the restrictions are lifted, we will be looking forward to celebrating the season results at a sailing presentation evening at Main Beach Club and junior presentations at Hollywell. Keep your eyes open for these announcements in the future.

We are all excitedly looking forward to starting the new season of competitive sailing, if all goes to plan and the government still allows it, on July 11th. It will be great to see all our sailing friends out on the water again. The sailing office and the sailing committee have been working tirelessly towards this resumption.

Sailing Operations Manager Simon Turpin

Well as we are all aware, the start of our new sailing season on May 1 has been one that we will all remember in history for the global Pandemic of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Firstly, I would like to thank all our members who expressed their sincerity and thoughts when our teams were all stood down in March due to having to close our Yacht Club temporarily. I also wish to sincerely thank our Board for applying and taking up the Jobkeeper subsidy from the Australian Government.

This decision by our Board has ensured the well-being of our teams during these uncertain times and will allow us to reopen with the support of our teams once again. For our, Board to also support our employees who did not qualify for the Jobkeeper subsidy has demonstrated true leadership and dedication to our people.

These are true testaments to the wonderful culture our Yacht Club continues to reinforce and are part of the many reasons why I am so proud and honoured to be part of Southport Yacht Club.

By the time this edition of inSYnC is published, we will have confirmed our new Sailing Season Calendar, which in this point of time is set to start on Saturday, July 11 2020. Our winter series across all Divisions will be a little shorter this season, however, rest assured that the Sailing Calendar will once again be filled with awesome scheduled racing across all five of our Sailing Divisions.

We are also currently assessing and working on our health and safety plan for Covid-19, which will affect our Sailors in many ways with new compliance and social distancing laws having to be abided by. Whilst we are in fluid times, rest assured that we will be doing everything we can to make our Sailing safe, fun and enjoyable once again.

Please keep an eye out on our website and in your e-news for future announcements.

Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for Monday, July 20 and I would like to encourage all of our Sailors who are Gold Members to come along and show your support in being actively involved.

Shortly after the AGM, we will then be holding our Divisional Meetings for the elections of our new Sailing Committee for 2020/2021. I would like to thank all of our current Sailing Committee

Representatives for all of their tireless efforts and dedicated hours throughout our 2019/2020 Season.

The new “ORC Club” rating system by Australian Sailing has already been taken up by many of our Skippers with their new rating certificates being issued.

As previously advised, this new rating system is cost-effective and objective, based on science and complete boat measurements. There is no guessing or any subjective element for Skipper and or crew performance. Our Off, The Beach Dinghies and Catamarans, have been racing under a similar system with “Yardsticks” for many years and brings a level of performance measurement for the Skippers and crews to compare their performance. “IORC Club” has been adopted for our Keelboats in our Offshore Division Series and Inshore Division Series and their relevant SYC Special Events. We will still also continue to run the current PHS System for scoring as well in the 2020/2021 Season.

I am pleased to confirm that the 2020 Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht race will now take place on Saturday, October 3. The CYCA is anticipating record numbers this year due to the lack of Sailing since March for their members, so our preparations are currently underway.

While I know, we have all been affected by this recent pandemic in one way or another. I am confident that we will all make our 2020/2021 Sailing Season bigger and better than ever before with your continued support.

Hello from 1.5metres! The last few months have been very interesting to say the least with the COVID-19 virus. I’d like to firstly say a huge thank you to Brett and the SYC staff who have been working hard to manage the club throughout the changing government regulations and health advice in these unprecedented times.

Competitive Sailing has been cancelled until the government restriction can be lifted, at the time of writing the sailing committee are planning on recommencing racing on the 11th/12th July. Currently, we are looking at the sailing calendar to see if it’s possible to re-jig and dates.

2020/2021 Safety Audits due dates have been pushed back to expire on the 30th September 2020 on advice from Australian Sailing. Similar to last year we will be planning a number of times for which to try and get all boats audited, stay tuned for more details.

ORC Club will be introduced this year and will run alongside the PHS divisions.

Skippers should have received the information last month via email; more details can be found on the website – www.orc.org.

This system is designed to handicap boats based on their boat, as opposed to each day’s performance. It is a relatively simple process to measure your boat (which each

owner can do themselves) and apply for an ORC certificate this year only, SYC has negotiated a special 50% discount of only $45 per boat. If you have any questions or need assistance, please get in contact with me or the sailing office while we have a couple of weeks before the season recommences. This is a fabulous opportunity for skippers and crews to get an ORC certificate and see how you go against the rest of the fleet!

I am sure many members are looking forward to getting back on the water as soon as possible, and we are endeavouring to do just that. Please remain positive, support those who are struggling and let the countdown begin to 10th July.

The football has returned and that means that sport is returning to our lives.

From July 11, we can get back on the water in an officially organised sporting event. We’re not wasting any time on Thursdays, so we’ll be back on the water Thursday, July 16.

Our Document Solutions Winter Twilight series will be slightly abbreviated this year (due to COVID-19).

Exact dates of this series, plus the adjusted dates of the Document Solutions Summer series will be released shortly.

We managed 10 out of 14 races and Hula had a substantial lead so I would imagine they would have gone on to win the series anyway.

In light of the events of the past few months, I would like to firstly thank all of our sailing members for your understanding and patience during this time. With a situation that has constantly been evolving, the Sailing Office, like everyone else, has been responding to changes daily and now that we are partially back on deck, we are working hard to prepare for when our sailing activities are able to resume.

Taking into consideration the impact that the closure period has had on our racing schedule, the racing calendar has been reviewed, and I encourage all sailors to refer to the online sailing calendar and the amended SIs for the updated racing schedule. We are hopeful that, at the time of printing this article of InSYnC, we will be preparing for our racing schedule to kick off with our first SYC Special Event of the year – the Evolution Sails 2 Handed series on 11th July.

We are also delighted that another of our SYC Special Events that wasn’t able to go ahead during the closure period – the Telemachus Ladies Day Race – has been rescheduled for 9th August. Telemachus Jewellery has been a wonderful sponsor of this event for many many years, and we are happy that it was possible to reschedule this event.

I want to thank all bailment holders at Hollywell for renewing bailment. We appreciate that the last couple of months have been trying for many and your continued support of the Club is recognised, and it means that we are in a strong position moving forward.

We are also fast approaching the 30th June, which is when all Australian Sailing Special Regulations Equipment Audit Forms usually expire. SYC has extended this date which will now be pushed back to 30th September, which means an additional three month period for Safety Audits to be completed.

Many of you will also be wondering about Presentation evenings, which were initially scheduled to take place this month. Rest assured, these events will be rescheduled, however, in light of the restrictions that are currently in place we are still working through how best to hold the events whilst also adhering to social distancing requirements.

As a final note, the next AGM will be held on Monday 20th July. I encourage all sailors to attend the AGM – it’s a great way to find out first hand what is happening with your Club.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our current Sailing Committee for everything that they have done for the Club during this term – particularly during this period with the unique set of circumstances that we have faced - and look forward to welcoming our new Sailing Committee following the AGM. As we return to a ‘new normal’, I look forward to getting to know more of you, and seeing you around the Club – and back at racing!

The next Surf to City is also confirmed for 9th January 2021, following on from our premier Sail Paradise Regatta which will take place from 4th – 7th January 2021.

Drifting Further Away Mat Belcher - Olympic Gold Medallist

It has been an interesting few months as we have been watching the world change around us almost on a daily basis.

As an athlete, you are very much in your own world, Will & I were a day away from starting our World Championship title defence, in Mallorca, Spain. We had finished our preparations and were looking forward to the final push to 2020 when the official call from the Spanish government was made to get out of Spain within the next 24 hrs.

We were in disbelief that it was happening. We had been focusing so hard on our competitions that we (and many others) were oblivious of what was to come. Many teams decided to stay for more training, but Will & I and the team decided to leave immediately. We left our equipment on the Spanish island and called in many favours from our European friends to get our equipment

back to Germany for safe storage. As the borders within Europe started to close, we were in a race to try and get home.

During our travels back to Australia from Spain, it became apparent on what was about to happen.

Over the next five weeks of quarantine with the family and homeschooling, it was hard not to think the Olympics would be lost for us. In mixed emotions, the IOC gave the athletes a final chance to delay one more year. The first time in Olympic history this has happened.

One more year‌. To be honest, we gave this some deep thought as to if, how, and could we sustain our momentum until Tokyo2021 in this environment.

When everyone’s lives have been up heeled, and everything is so uncertain, it is challenging to maintain focus and energy.

Another three weeks passed, and

we decided to start training. With an extensive risk mitigation plan and the support of the Sporting bodies, we were able to train on a weekly rotation basis in Coffs Harbour, NSW. We have kept this up to date and are still trying to find out what is our best options going forward. We are hoping to head back home and start training on the Gold Coast soon, once the QLD border opens up again and lets the team in.

We are trying to remain positive, creative and think differently to overcome the genuine possibility of not being able to race until next year. To think that we could potentially be out of racing for over 14 months and will only have four months to get back up to speed; whilst our international competitors are starting to get back to racing in groups now (with training regattas starting again in Europe) will be daunting. But we have the experience, and I know we will give it everything we have to finish strong.

What has been an unprecedented few that are provided at Hollywell and Main months has given us the chance to Beach. reset and plan to come out stronger than ever.

On the sailing front, we did have to cease all operations; however, we We have been lucky at the Watersports were able to recommence private Centre that all the news hasn’t lessons in a timely fashion which been negative, one positive is our have proven popular with our heavily Watersports CafÊ that has been busier discounted prices. The sailing staff than ever before. We encourage have been busy preparing the boats, members to come down and enjoy a building and equipment for the return coffee or bite to eat (why not both!), of sailing classes. “Nordlys” “Nordlys”

The Southport Yacht Club has a small number of members whom have a membership of more that 50 years.

Jim Murphy joined the club in 1963 (57 years) when the club a small red brick building had a total membership of 387. Jim & Nancy were successful business people and loved their boating and in 1964 Jim purchased his first boat “Jenny Lyn” a half cabin wooden clinker hull 18’6ft, and after a couple of years Jim sold her and acquired another vessel “Binda” Jim commenced navigation events and was outright points winner of 2 Goodwill Cups in 1966-1967 and in the late 60’s Jim sold “Binda”.

Being without a boat for some, In 1976 Jim brought a 14mtr hard-chine timber bridge deck cruise called “Nord Sjarna” (Danish for North Star). But after 4 years in1980 he parted with “Nord Sjarna” with the happy memories of good time’s on board with family and friends going North each winter as far afield as Lizard Island & Princess Charlotte Bay. By late 1983 Jim said “We are going to build another boat” That decision was the beginning of “Nordlys” she was built

by Nelson Raebel at Walkers Boat Yard, Cabbage point. the laying of the keel was in March 1984. she was a hard-chine 16.2mtr spotted gum timber hull, 5mtr beam with a-draft of 1.7mtr’s weighed in at 32 tonnes, 2 Oregon masts and powered by a 6 LxB Gardiner, 7.5 Generator and all the latest in electronics, fuel capacity 4,500 lt. and 4,000 water..

The launching party was on December 12 1984, at the Walkers Yard. Jim informed the many guests attending the launch “I name thee “Nordlys” and bless all who sail in her” as she slipped gracefully into the water.

The first extended cruise we left the Southport Yacht Club on April 26 1986. around the top end for Perth for the 22

preliminaries in 1986 and the final in 1987 of the Americas Cup. There were 13 challengers and 6 Aust yachts.and the atmosphere was terrific at the Fremantle Yacht Club . We were away for 11 months steamed 9,444 nautical miles 1308 engine hours when we arrived back in Southport.

In 1988 we slipped our moorings again and headed South to Sydney for the 200 year Bicentennial Annervesary of Australia. Many guest came aboard from as far as USA. Jim said it was a fabiouslous day on the Sydney Harbour on Australia day January 26 1988 with Tall Ships and thousands of boats all shapes and sizes with, like our selves, lots of people on board having a good time.

After the trip around Australia, following Sydney for the Bicentennial celebrations, it was a case of Jim said “Oh, hum.what are we going to do now” “We might as well go to the Med”.

Nordlys set sail for around the World cruise the day after the Southport Yacht Clubs Sail past-day on the September 3 1988. With some friends aboard headed up the Eastcoast destination Darwin Jim’s plan was to leave there on the November 1. Well the big day arrived although there was some delay in receiving their cruising permits from the Indonesian Council but on the day of departure the permits arrived and we steamed out of Darwin on the October 31.

With visiting various countries on route, Nordlys passed through the Equator at 04:30 on the December 2 1988.

On March 16 1989 Nordlys dropped anchor in the receiving basin in preparation to proceed through the Suez Canal, there agent was “Prince of the Red Sea” We pick up on one of the highlight of Jims round the World cruise with some friends from the Gold Coast were aboard, on April 23 1990 we arrived at Cannkkale hoping to get information regarding boats going to ANZAC Cove for the 75th Anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli. Jim could not get

any approval for a private boat to attend the services, a security measure because Maggie Thatcher PM of the UK and Bob Hawke PM of Aust. the President of Turkey, plus other dignitaries, would be attending the various commemorations.

Jim decided we would go regardless we scheduled are time table to be at there on April 25 making sure we would be there for the memorable occasion.

On April 24 under cover of darkness, we slipped into ANZAC Cove, expecting to be challenged - but no problems Nordlys quietly moved into shallow water, dropped anchor and lights out. (Sounds like something from Clive Cussler).

There were 16 naval ships on anchor, three were Australian vessels. Next morning we headed for the shore, under the cover of darkness again, for the dawn service.

The beach was patrolled by Turkish soldiers “This is it” we thought, expecting to be turned away- but no they assisted us getting out of our dinghy. We hurried up the beach before any awkward questions could be asked. we mixed in with the big crowed and saw the old diggers arrive, being assisted from buses, frail old men, the last of the ANZAC’s. this was an experience we are glad to share, for it will never be repeated, as the ANZAC’s will have quietly faded away- but not the memory.

We heard Bob Hawke give the dawn service and the bugler play the Last Post, by this time it was daylight and the Nordlys was conspicuous in ANZAC Cove amongst 16 Naval ships. We piled back into the dinghy and made haste on our way.

Nordlys continues her journey around the world and after 52,000 nautical miles and 7,968 engine hours consuming 24,000 imperial gallons of diesel and crossed 50 countries, had Nordlys slipped 7 times through the journey, and Jim said the best day was off Cape Moreton, and the most

memorable day was at ANZAC Cove.

Following some of the brief summery of some of the highlights-: : At the time Nordlys was the first SYC boat to circumnavigate the Globe. : The SYC 50 year book “Fifty Years On” page 92 a double page spread of Nordlys taken in Alaska. : November 93 issue of the SYC Broadsheet devoted a page of “Welcome Home Nordlys”. : In the bottle section at Main Beach a photo of Nordlys on the bulkhead.

The book produced by Jim, “Nordlys Around the World” reads 92 pages of the excitement of the voyage of Nordlys a must-read if you are a cruiser.

In 1996 Jim decided to sell Nordlys after 12 years traveling to many foreign lands and distant seas, met lots of great people logged up 62,000 nautical miles without breakdowns, pirates, or health scares.

October 2, 1997, Jim turned 70 and on the 6th Nordlys left SYC under a new owner.

Volunteers update.

This year SYC volunteers missed out on toasting the National Volunteers Week on the 18th to 24th May. However, I’m sure you all appreciated the work by the significant number of volunteers throughout Australia over the past couple of months with drought, bush fires and now the pandemic, who generously volunteered their time to support the needy during these months.

Good news has come through that the annual Sydney to Gold Coast Yachting Classic has been rescheduled for October 2020. A roster will be despatched in late August to those who have volunteered in previous years for the radio room, RIB skippers and crews.

It’s good to see the sailors getting ready for mid-week competitive racing for Wednesday Twilights at Hollywell, and Thursday Twilights out of Main Beach. The Saturday and Sunday racing calendar at Hollywell will be put up on the Team-app website with volunteer numbers required for each event.

Thank you all for your input before our shut-down, our sailing staff look forward to catching up with you on your return as our Club’s Volunteers. You are all an essential part of these events for the new program of racing for 2020-2021.

Unfortunately we haven’t succeeded in playing any games this year under the Club’s banner.

We tried on three occasions to “get the ball rolling” only to be thwarted by the elements and COVID-19.

Surfers Paradise was all set with twenty four members ready to go when the drought broke in the days preceding.

The sun was bright and shining on the day, however the course was so wet they closed it.

Next was Arundel Hills on 9th March.

There had been a fair bit of rain the previous day and the weather was not looking good on the day. I checked with BOM and rang the Club at 6am as

I always do. My BOM indicated the skies were clear and it was decided we should play. Notice was given and all twenty four players turned up.

As it turned out my BOM had given me a false reading and there was in fact a large and heavy bank of rain about to descend upon us. Everyone paid their money and as we stood around awaiting our allotted hit off time, down came the rain. After half an hour it became obvious it wasn’t going to let up and everyone departed for home having had their money refunded of course.

Our next game was scheduled for 6th April at Sanctuary Cove. Because the COVID-19 distancing rules were just

coming in, it was hard to get a clear picture as to whether or not we would get a game as new distancing decisions were being made on a daily basis.

Finally we assembled a field of fifteen players ready to go, each in separate carts. At the “eleventh hour” the course management advised, the course was now closed to visitors and it was “members only” till further notice.

We have ceased playing until restrictions ease.

White Lady Funerals Funerals on the Gold Coast during COVID-19 times Like so many other businesses, we have adjusted to changes in our work conditions and the services we can provide to people at the time of death in the family.

Social distancing and the number of people permitted within specified areas means we can only have two members of the family attend the meeting with our team to arrange the funeral service. I suggest other family members who would ordinarily have been present at this meeting dial in via phone to be part of the decision making process.

On arrival at our building to arrange the funeral, the obligatory hand sanitiser is now a permanent fixture on the front desk and is offered to guests as they enter. We have also introduced a strict morning cleaning regime of all surfaces, doorknobs, light switches, etc., which is repeated after any visitors to the building have departed. This procedure is replicated in the Chapels where the funerals are held.

The most significant impact of funeral services is the limitations on attendees. Initially, this was ten people in total – including the minister or celebrant and the funeral staff, so in reality, this only allowed for seven family members to attend. This has been raised to 10 family members, plus the person conducting the ceremony and our staff. (this number is at 30/4/2020, and we have just learned that it will be extended to 20 people as of 17/5/2020). We have removed seating in our chapels and now only hold ten chairs, spaced far apart according to the guidelines.

However, ten people present at the service is still a minimal number, and we are finding the option of live streaming services has become the norm. I recently had a service livestreamed, and we recorded 285 views at the end of the service from around Australia and the globe. The feedback we have received from the “viewers” has been overwhelmingly positive, which is a great comfort to the family. We have always provided this opportunity in the past - usually for people overseas who could not 26

make it to service - but it was not a common occurrence. Now it has become “the norm”.

While there is the temptation not to have a funeral and plan a memorial at a later date with the deceased person’s ashes present, we find that, especially for the immediate family, this is emotionally unacceptable. It is still an integral part of the grieving process to have a ceremony of farewell, i.e. “a funeral”. The gathering of the clan is especially important in this time of isolation. We have on some occasions held two funeral services back to back – meaning we have the minister or celebrant repeat the service after the first ten family members have departed, for the second set of 10 family members.

This allows expansion of up to 20 in attendance, and that has been a great solace. Likewise, with viewings, we stagger these over an extended

period of time to allow more members of the family and friendship circle to attend and pay their last respects. There are over 120 different cultural groups living on the Gold Coast, and for many of these, the funeral ceremony is not negotiable – it simply must take place.

As funeral directors, we take great pride in the work we do, and in times like these, it feels more important than ever to create meaningful funerals for the families we care for. It is a privilege to serve our community, and it now has a significance like never before.

Hello all, I felt that I should let you all know that your Powerboat Committee have scheduled our first meeting for the planning of the next season to be held in June, with the current and predicted easing of restrictions we feel confident enough to prepare for a restart of our boating activities.

Some of our members have already taken advantage of the current lifting of restrictions by having an enjoyable stay at Dux, and they were also able to have lunch at Tipplers, please keep watching the Club’s releases and emails for any further information about Cruising and Navigation functions and events as we are able to proceed.

I hope you are all well and coping with the current lockdown situation.

Unfortunately, there is not much to report for this issue of our magazine.

I miss the club and all of your faces.

Let’s hope in the near future we will be able to be back having a drink with our friends and working at our fundraising activities for the Club.

When we commenced the new year, we put together plans to hold all our usual fundraising functions and raffles for the year. We were fortunate to be able to fit in a day trip to Stradbroke Island on 5th March, and the Associates and guests had a lovely day with lunch at Manta Ray Bistro at Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel, and a return stop at Little Ship Club for afternoon tea. Thank you to Karen and Anne Maree (Zeppelin Travel) for putting this trip together.

Unfortunately, it looks like everything else on the calendar may have to wait.

We cancelled our Fashion Auction Dinner in mid-April, and our Gala Evening in July, followed by our Spring Carnival and Melbourne Cup Lunches are all on hold until further notice. In between those proposed events, we had planned to have Mothers Day and Fathers Day Raffles. Obviously, these events cannot be held if we are all still

in lockdown. It may be possible to still have our Christmas Mega Raffle, where we usually begin selling tickets in September, but again this will have to be decided in a few months’ time.

• 400ml coconut milk • 2 medium tomatoes roughly chopped • 1 teaspoon salt • 600g firm white fish cut into 3cm chunks (I use frozen snapper) • 20g (1 cup) chopped fresh coriander • 1/2 lime - juiced

Method Melt the coconut oil in a medium saucepan.

Sauté the onion for about 5 minutes over a medium heat until translucent and just starting to brown.

Add the garlic and ginger, and cook, stirring gently for 1 minute.

Add the curry powder, turmeric, and curry leaves, and cook, stirring for a further minute until the mixture is fragrant.

Slowly stir in the coconut milk, scraping up the spices and onion from the bottom of the saucepan. Bring the pan to a gentle simmer.

Add the chopped tomato and continue to simmer for about 5 minutes or until the tomato begins to soften.

Add the fish and the salt to the sauce, and gently poach for about 6 – 8 minutes, or until the fish is cooked.

Gently stir in the coriander and lime juice.

Serve with steamed rice

Tips Try and use a good quality coconut milk to get a nice rich and creamy fish curry or you could use coconut cream instead.

What type of fish is good for curry?

When selecting fish to use in your curry, choose firm fillets that hold their shape once cooked. If the fish flakes too easily, it will fall apart in the sauce (I used snapper for this particular recipe).

This particular fish curry recipe works well with either fresh or frozen fish fillets but in saying that if your family doesn’t like eating fish, then you can make this recipe with chicken or vegetables instead.

Whilst the whole fish curry recipe can be frozen, you will get a better result if you freeze the sauce alone.

To serve, bring the sauce up to a simmer, and then add the fish Fresh curry leaves are not an essential ingredient for this fish curry recipe but do enhance the curry flavour in the dish. Bags of fresh leaves are usually available in Asian supermarkets. The fresh leaves freeze well, so if you find the leaves then just freeze any excess and you don’t worry about defrosting them before using.

If you cannot source fresh curry leaves, dried curry leaves can be used in place of the fresh leaves.

Matheus has been an employee with SYC for 5 years – for those of you that might have seen him around the Club he always has the biggest smile on his face and friendly manner.

Typically based in the kitchen, starting as a Kitchen Porter and then moving his way up to a Chef de Partie.

Due to the COVID closure we found out that Matheus had more talents than just his cooking in the kitchen, he’s has been working in the gardens and what an outstanding job he has done.
