Welcome to the summer edition of the iN SYnC 2019/2020.

The Gold Coast glorious summer has arrived! This means only one thing, SAIL PARADISE is just around the corner! Southport Yacht Clubs very own regatta kicks off straight after the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, on the 2nd January, a new date for the regatta, and is shaping up to be another huge race with a healthy number of competitors already locked in.

2020 is shaping to be a big year for the Club. Keep your eye on the date savers, so you don’t miss a thing!

Southport Sailing at Holly well is closed from the 16th December – 2nd January 2020.

Southport Yacht Club Main Beach is Closed Christmas Day, open all other public holidays.

We have a huge Australia Day Weekend planned. Starting with an Aussie Themed Music Trivia Night on Friday, 24th – live music and Aussie inspired tapas and Waterfront Restaurant Menus throughout the weekend. So, slip on the sunscreen, slap on a t-shirt and slip into some thongs… and join us for what will be a fun weekend!

The last few months has highlighted progress and change within and around the Club this quarter! This report identifies most, if not all, what has been achieved in such a short time.

Main Beach clubhouse has had some major changes, with the creation of the Quarter Deck and the 4Shore Bar on the old eastern lawn, and we now have an amazing outdoor space to relax and enjoy the sunsets over the marina. The deck and cover it creates is now a year round facility for members and guests to utilise. The clubhouse has a fresh new look, with brand new furnishings throughout, a bright and nautical look, just in time for summer.

And finally, the shade structure installation over the children’s playground will ensure our “mini mariners” are protected from the elements year-round. This has been yet another incredible fund-raising effort by the Associates Committee which funded this cover. Southport Yacht Club Members, Guests, and most importantly the under 10yr old visitors, all thank you for your dedication to endless fund raising, and generous support to the Club’s facilities, ensuring that our venue is the best the Coast has on display.

Hollywell Clubhouse has also seen benefits from numerous upgrades, which include a modern and stylish new look to the dining area, tables and chairs, which has created a relaxing venue to enjoy dinner or drinks beside the Broadwater.

On water we have participated in serious competition, including the Goodwill Cup. Yet again, we congratulate our team leaders, for their passion and dedication to drive the boats and crew towards a good performance in this event each year. They certainly pushed hard, staying positive, even in the face of being outnumbered 3 – 1! SYC would love to see a lot more of our boaties competing in this race for 2020. Please contact Reception for more information, or to register your interest for next year’s race.

In November we held the Half Yearly General Meeting and thanks to our Gold and equivalent members who took the time to attend and supply generous feedback and knowledge on items that the Board then takes to our Strategic Planning Meeting each year. With the progress on The Spit Master Plan by GCCC and State, we have worked extremely hard towards approvals and inclusions for the Club within this plan.

It is with great pleasure that we can

announce that The Spit Master Plan has enabled the Club to be granted a Ministerial Infrastructure designation in which we have initial approval to move towards installation of our SuperYacht berth, which the Club is aiming to have completed prior to the Olympic Games to be held in Japan, and the America’s Cup being held in Auckland later in 2020. These events have earmarked over 120+ Superyachts in Australasian waters, and our Club is a preferred destination for their stopover.

Looking ahead, we have some amazing events to enjoy this coming festive season and into the New Year. We hope you can join in, with some great on water events coming up too, such as the Bartercard Sail Paradise regatta in January.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our members for their patronage to all four SYC venues, along with the on water activities! I thank our Management Team, which strive to bring you activities, events, and experiences, that ensure your membership is beneficial, as well as the behind the scenes processes to keep the Club moving forward. I’d also like to give appreciation to the whole SYC Team, for their passion, dedication, and drive that you all bring to the Club, making our members and guests feel welcome, like family rather than customers.

I wish each and every one of you a happy, safe, and festive holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you in the Club, or on the water, again soon.

Hi fellow members.

Its great to say that your club is moving forward both on and off the water.

The addition of the Quarterdeck has proven to be a massive benefit to all.

With its completion only a matter of weeks ago, its already proving to be a favourite location for many of our members.

Our sailors have ‘adopted’ the area for all of their presentations and official announcements, plus the building of the 4shore bar ensures the ease of getting served on a busy night in the main bar.

It will also be an excellent source of revenue through functions, but this will be a secondary use to the members regular usage. If you haven’t enjoyed this area as yet, please make a point of doing so. You will be greatly impressed.

The new furniture has arrived and its given your club a whole new fresh look.

Its light and bright plus the tables are a little bigger than the old ones to give you more room to relax and enjoy your meal. The high tables look great and the lounges out on the Quarterdeck lawn are very inviting.

Superyachts are all the talk at the moment and we want to make sure we don’t miss the boat on this one (excuse the pun). Our strengthening of the end of D arm is nearing completion, and this will enable much bigger, heavier yachts to moor at the end of D arm.

The research into the possible building of a super yacht berth to the West of the club has taken positive turns. The government departments (both local and state) are really opening doors for us at the moment to help this potential project gain momentum.

Its a great opportunity for our club to increase our footprint on the Gold Coast and enhance our club as a favoured destination from all over the world. If we don’t do it, somebody else will.

There will be more information to our members about this as the time draws nearer.

On the water we have again been performing admirably.

Our Goodwill Cup team went to Moreton Bay to vigorously defend the trophy but unfortunately were beaten this year.

A few tracking devises didn’t work properly which took some of our better players out of action. Regardless of that, this year the better team won, and we will no doubt return next year with an even more aggressive attack on the course and win the coveted trophy back for the SYC. Our sailors continue to impress on the world, state and local level. Gold member Matthew Belcher was the first sailor chosen for the 2020 Olympic team in Japan next year. Matt has been a world class sailor (and world class bloke) for many years now, and I’m sure we will all be cheering for him at the upcoming Olympics. Hopefully, Mat won’t be alone at the Olympics with a few other SYC sailors still in contention for the team. Our future international sailors (our juniors) continue to impress.

For many years now, SYC juniors have always been competitive wherever they go. This hasn’t changed. As our ‘youngsters’ come through, they proudly wave the SYC burgee whenever they compete.

If you have a child, grandchild, niece or nephew, I can’t think of a better sport to get them involved in. Its clean, healthy fresh air and competitive nature brings out the best in any child. Why not get them started!!!!

I’d like to congratulate our team in the sailing office for their ongoing efforts to ensure our rising numbers are catered for, and that we still deliver a first class product for our sailors.

Our Oxenford venue is now starting to show its full potential. Its been a long, hard task working out the best hours and products for our coffee shop on site. Thanks to all the team who work there for your flexibility. On the water, our young tackers program is showing numbers that are the best in the state and possibly one of the best in the country. These tackers are our future and its great to see our future looks strong.

Before we start 2020, I’d like to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New year season.

Spend time with family and friends, you just don’t know when you won’t be able to again.

Be safe, enjoy the season, don’t forget why Uber is there.

HOT HOT HOT, not only the weather but the activity at SYC. The new Quarterdeck and 4Shore Bar, the new cover over the kid’s playground, the new furniture at Main Beach and Hollywell.

It’s great to see the Club changing every year and for members to see where their support goes. The new cover over the kid’s playground wouldn’t be possible without the support from the Associates of $100,000.

Sailing has been busy with staff finding it hard to get a day off. The 2019 Etchells Queensland Championships were all well represented with The Cure, skippered by David Clarke finishing first.

School sailing at Oxenford continues to grow with school holidays fast approaching, don’t forget to take the kids or grandkids out for a sail.

Recent events such as Mental as Anything, Halloween, Melbourne Cup, Ord Minnett Sailing Fundraiser, Frontm3n where huge events with Carols and Christmas events coming

Dux has seen its first fishing contest with Southport Fishing Club, RSL Fishing Club and SYC members competing at Dux. I’m very happy to say the day was won by me, yes the GM can fish!

We have a few events booked over Christmas at Dux as this hasn’t been done before, we will track to see if we hold these events in the future.

New Years is another big night for the Club, you want to book early, as every year this event is sold out well in advance.

If you want to come down to have a few drinks and watch the band, just turnup.

This year we have the famous Abba and Bee Gees Tribute Show, so get your dancing shoes on and once again we can watch the fireworks all over the Broadwater.

Well we’re off again, Since our last edition, the 2019/20 season has commenced with three great cruises having been enjoyed by all of those involved. The last of which started on the 3/11/19 at Dux then moved on to Santa Barbara before travelling up to Sanctuary Cove for drinks, courtesy of Maritimo and an excellent Melbourne Cup luncheon at the Artichoke restaurant. The weather was pleasant in the right anchorages making for a most memorable few days. Unfortunately, Noelene and I were not able to participate due to our commitment to the “Goodwill Cup “. Our December Christmas lunch was held at the Club which was enjoyed by all those in attendance.

I’m sorry to say we lost. Taking into account we had four of our brand-new tack trackers fail to download any data, one of our best traditional navigators Paul Mathews had an engine failure and another withdrew. One other competitor left his tack tracker at home which required a transfer of a spare to him in the middle of our run. In bad weather, and in the middle of the Bay, which sadly cost valuable time. We were left with just eight competing boats to achieve “ The Impossible Dream”.

Our team was outnumbered almost three to one. To our credit, Todd Brooker and crew took out first place with an incredible loss of only sixteen seconds in the GPS division, our best Traditional placed boat was Sapphire with PC Neville Ferguson and Dave Churton coming in second, with a very credible 136 seconds lost.

Tempo with PC Phil Short as navigator came in with a loss of 205 seconds giving them fourth place. Seven of our SYC competitors finished in the top half of the fleet, well done! The weather conditions on the Bay were taxing to say the least with heavy rain and wind making visibility poor and steerage difficult.

However, all credit must go to RQ, they were the better team on the day.

I must offer our congratulations, and thanks to their committee Chair Pip Fenwick, Chris Land and all of their team for a well organised event.

There have been 58 years of very spirited competition between our two clubs since 1962 when our then Commodore Jerry Molle accepted the challenge from Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron to compete against them for the Cup, and as they say, ‘ the rest is history.’

Our Navigators at SYC have acquitted themselves with distinction since that challenge, as we have taken out thirtytwo wins against our twenty-six losses, a record the Club should be proud of as Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron are a navigational force not to be taken lightly.

Our newest competitor also took out the Stone Motherless Last Trophy, luckily he has big shoulders and is able to carry the load well done Tony, Fiona and Richard ..... I need to take some credit here as my

information was a little confusing, sorry guys I’ll do better next time.

I am pleased to say we have several newer competitors for this season who I am happy to welcome aboard and hope they have a successful year.

Another of our successes is committee member Justin Sinnamon’s son Mathew, who has competed with Justin for several years as his navigator and is now a member of the green sailing team out of our Hollywell facility. He recently came first out of a fleet of one hundred and twenty-six competitors in the opti championships. The whole Powerboat Committee is proud to offer our congratulations to Mathew for his fabulous win.

The half yearly annual meeting discussed the approval of the Boards plans for our new Super Yacht Berth, hopefully with all conditions being met we can move on. This, although being a large financial undertaking for a few years will be another reliable source of income for the future proofing of our Club and follow the visionary lead of previous Club Boards in improving our facilities.

How this year has flown! Our winter sailing season is over and we are now into the much warmer spring/ summer season and it is pleasing to see the participation rates in all our divisions going from strength to strength.

The Offshore winter series sponsored

by Club Marine was finalised for the keelboats resulting in Envy, Cyclone and Another Painkiller taking the honours in Div 1 and Fourlove, KD Girl and Plan B taking the podium places in Div 2.

The Summer series has now begun and we have a great competitive fleet on the water. Glenn Burrell has upped the competion with the purchase of his new raceboat, a gp42 called Black Diamond.

A beautiful sight to see racing and I am so pleased to see this great addition to our fleet and wish him and his crew a successful summer of racing.

Christmas and the New Year are fast approaching and our premier race regatta, the Bartercard Sail Paradise is being held over 4 days from the 2nd to the 5th of January in the waters off the beautiful beaches of Surfers Paradise.

I look forward to welcoming all the competitors to our great Club over this time and I’m sure all our members will give them a warm welcome.

Incorporated into the regatta this year is the National Championship for the Skud 19 fleet , a class for disability sailors.

We are expecting a fleet of at least 9-12 competitors to join the other offshore fleets.

Since the last article we have several special events, the Mooloolabah Marathon , a 2 day event held over the long weekend in August. A very pleasing fleet of 6 boats set out for the race in very trying conditions with the honours for overall going to Another Painkiller closely followed by Blunderbuss and Wildflower 2.

The next regatta was the Ted Elkes Memorial and a fleet of 12 competed.

Another more friendly social regatta was the Bridge to No Bridge again held over 2 days. Despite the pouring rain and little wind a fleet of 10 boats set out from the deep hole to race to the finish near Couran Cove. A great sausage sizzle on Saturday night and a wonderful bacon and egg roll the next morning were cooked at Dux by Mark Dingley and Kylie our race officers for this event.

Many thanks to them for volunteering to run this event. Without our volunteers these regattas can’t happen.

by Seebreeze Industries and Steve Quan, the Burleigh Bash was held on the 27th October. Winning the perpetual trophy racing against a fleet of 42 boats, Dave Chadkirk and his crew on Cyclone were the first to Burleigh. The winner back to the finish line was Peter Merten on Knackered from Seven and Blunderbuss.

On Friday 8/11 the Annual Charity Yachting regatta was held with 12 skippers offering their time and yachts to help the Club raise money for our youth sailing program and to aid the Melanoma charity set up by the Belcher family. A great time was had by over 150 corporate employees in challenging 20+ kts. Ord Minnett was our major sponsor and many thanks for their continued support each year, I also thank all the other companies who participated and made it such an enjoyable day.

With the strength of our youth sailing program we have many of our juniors representing SYC participating at regattas in Australia and around the world, Angus Wheatley , Lachlan Wheatley, Ashleigh Swadling, Blake Wilson, Sam Martland , Melanie Watson, Angus Sherring, Oscar Guy, Matthew Sinnamon, Warren Guinea, Andrew Wilson and Leonardo Hughes. A great effort by you all as well as parents, coaches, and the sailing office.

The big boys also represented our Club at the annual St Helena regatta on Moreton Bay. Our team didn’t win this year but Desperado, Ocean Racer Chaser, and Wild Spirit sailed well in an effort to retain their trophy.

Of course it goes without saying we wish our own Matt Belcher and Joel Turner all the best in their quest to represent Australian at the next Olympics I wish all members, their friends and families a safe and happy Christmas and New Year and hope to see you at SYC over the Christmas season.

Finally…..Summer has arrived!

It’s been so amazing to see the activity of our members both on and off the water. The energy and enthusiasm have been addictive and our 19/20 Summer season looks like breaking all records of participation - yet again. To put it into perspective, for the first 6 months of our year (May – October) we have had a total of 9,421 people participate in our Sport of Sailing.

To break this down, we group these into the following categorised events: SYC Sailing Academy Programs: 2,621 SYC Corporate Sailing Events: 994 SYC Club Racing: 5,092 SYC Special Events:

714 This represents an increase of over 12.5% upon last years recorded participation!

In our Club racing we have seen a lot of our Cadets progress through our Sailing Academy pathways with Tackers 1 & 2 at SYC Oxenford and Tackers 3 at SYC Hollywell. With the recent quarterly report released by Australian Sailing, we have achieved the number 2 ranking in the Top Ten Tacker Centres in Australia!

These programs feed our Sailing Team,

Performance Sailing Team and High Fin Performance Sailing Teams, so please keep an eye out for these up and coming Sailors, as I have no doubt that there is natural talent that may eventually lead to more successful Olympians.

On Friday, November 8th we hosted our Club’s annual Charity Sailing Day. Approximately 135 local business leaders, guest and VIP’s came along with numerous Club sailing members who all took part in a fun day of sailing on the Gold Coast Broadwater. Our special guest speaker this year was Mr Ken Arthurson who is affectionately known as “The Godfather of Manly Football Club”. This events purpose is to provide an opportunity for business leaders to entertain their clients or use for a great team building exercise, all while raising money for our Youth Sailing. With a huge thank you to our Twilight sailors (Thirteen SYC Yachts donated their Vessels, Skipper, Crews and time for the day) and many local businesses, the Club raised over $7,000 for the Youth Sailors of SYC. Thank you to everyone involved for all your support in this great Club event!

This year, the Regatta will also be incorporating the Skud 18 Australian National Championships and the newly developed IRC Gold Coast Championships. It is also pleasing to see that many of our Hollywell Bailment holders will be participating this year, as it is a condition of their Bailment to either actively participate or Volunteer in our Sail Paradise. Plenty of entertainment will also be held in the Club afterwards so be sure to check our website at www.sailparadise.com.au for updates and further information.

I would like to wish all of our Sailors who will be travelling away at their National Championships throughout Australia good luck. We will be following your progress and we all wish you safe travels, good weather and fast sailing.

Our members are what make our Club and this is why Southport Yacht Club is the best Yacht Club in Australia. I am extremely proud and honoured to be part of our SYC family and I sincerely thank you all for your continued support.

Summer is upon us and there is no shortage of sailing planned for this season.

As we go to print, we await the results of the Flat Rock Passage Race which saw 8 boats head north to round Flat Rock. Well done to all competitors, this race has almost doubled in participants since last year.

This year saw one of the largest fleets representing SYC at Airlie Beach Race Week, and Hamilton Island Race Week and there were some great results across all divisions. Congratulations to all the competitors for making the trip and enjoying the beautiful Whitsundays.

The final races of the Winter Series were held in September with Envy finishing 1st followed by Cyclone and Another Painkiller in Division 1. Fourlove finished in 1st place in Division 2 followed by KD Girl and Plan B. Well done! to all the competitors who participated in the 14race series.

Hi members, Our Thursday Twilight racing continues to be the social event of the week. So many regular Twilighters say to me “I look forward to Thursdays sooo much”.

In our Document Solutions Spring Series, Bob Ogle’s yacht “Enigma” is cleaning us up. He’s so far in front of the others I doubt if anybody can catch him to steal the series win from him. I am really pleased for Bob, because his passion for sailing is only matched by his passion to help others. Bob has been an active member at Sailability for years assisting those of us who aren’t as fortunate as we are, well, now he’s the boss of the show. Firstly, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers for putting in countless hours towards our busy sailing schedule. This season is jam packed with sailing across all divisions and its great to see our Volunteers coming out to help. The Sailing Office appreciates all the help and support receive from these volunteers and wouldn’t be able to run our events without you.

Having aligned our new sailing season with our bailment and membership period, it has been a steady transition.

Everyone would agree that there has been some cold rainy days and nights over the Winter series. But luckily, we have an abundance of skippers and

crew who brave it out and sailing to their best ability. Thank you to those who have been out there and made the last couple of months of racing that more exciting for us down at Hollywell.

Our 2020 Sail Paradise Regatta is only 6 weeks away and it looks like this will be one of the biggest fleets we have seen before. But there is still time to get your entries in, so please do as soon as possible to secure a spot in this great race. Entries close on Monday the 30th of December. If you have any questions regarding this event or anything else regarding sailing, please don’t hesitate to give the sailing office a call.

Thank you again to all those boats who have completed their safety audit certificates. We take safety at the Southport Yacht Club very seriously, and we need your boat to comply for you to be able to race. If you haven’t already got back to me with anything that was outstanding from your audit, please do before your next race. Also, any bailment documents not completed or outdated insurance policies need to be handed into the sailing office as soon as possible. We need all these documents on file.

MY BOAT

However, shortened to “Puddles” by the Bensons.

PUDDLES

There is a lovely little yacht moored on F arm that over the years has created a great deal of interest among members.

This interest swelled when the 4Shore Bar was opened and more and more people gathered, spotted and wanted to know about “Puddles.

Jokingly referred to by some SYC members as “the boat that never moves.”

We decided this quarter to tell you a bit about her, or in this gender diverse age “it”.

Securely moored about twenty metres from our main clubhouse, in a location convenient to all facilities, functions and entertainment, making her/it an ideal second home and refuge for her

owners, especially after a late night with friends in the Club.

This Triton 24 is a classy little sailboat and was built in Sydney in 1980, designed by QANTAS pilot John Alsop and first built by Malcolm Verman in the mid1970s. More than 300 have been built and Puddles is a Mark III model.

The associated photographs will give readers a good feeling about “Puddles”, except one, that of the marine attachments to the 1700lbs keel. More about that later.

Now, who are Jan and “Benny” Benson, long-time members of SYC with Jan being the current President of the Associates Committee, and Benny a member of the “Pontoon” club after 21 years of membership.

Jan is constantly busy helping to raise funds to provide additional equipment for members benefit, particularly for the support of our junior sailors.

Dale has answered to “Benny” for most of his life, and now insists that this is the correct form of address.

With two children and two grandchildren, they both enjoy the social experiences that the Club provides, while their

wider interests include caravanning, motorcycling, boating of all types, navigation events and ocean cruising.

“Benny” claims to have completed 28 ocean cruises and covered more than 150,000nm. There is some doubt about the accuracy of the statistics, as he is prone to exaggerate!

Jan and “Benny” are perfectionists in their trade as upholsterers, and the internal fitting-out of “Puddles” reflects their skill and attention to detail.

However, they take plenty of time attending to “underwater” detailing.

What is not shown in the enclosed photograph is what appeared to be a small Mangrove growing from the seabed to “Puddle’s” hull. The CSIRO may advise on this phenomenon!

Our story is nearly finished, but we would like to add a final accolade to Tritons around the World. Bill Hatfield and his partner/crew, Barbara, sailed an almost identical Triton 24 from Moreton

The Triton 24 is certainly a sturdy little vessel and would be good for those who would like to take up sailing as a sport.

Oxenford Watersports Centre Matthew Dickenson

The summer of sailing at SYC Oxenford Watersports Centre has started early. We recently hosted the 2019 Div 1 Unisport Nationals. The champions of the event were the University of Queensland, with

SYC sailor and Performance Coach George Morton on the team. We would like to thank our wonderful volunteers, who helped conduct over 120 races in 3 days!

The Quarter 1 results are in from Australian Sailing. SYC has seen a significant improvement from Quarter 1 last year due to the addition of our Watersports Centre. Below are some of the figures.

We were also the host venue for the INAS Global Games Rowing. The INAS Global Games is a quadrennial global, international multi-sport event organised by the International Sports Federation for persons with intellectual disability. It was a fantastic event for our Club to be involved with.

Finally, we are in full swing with school sailing. SYC has partnerships with 16 local schools. In fact, as I write I can hear the footsteps of 30 eager students descending down the stairs from our classroom to the boats ready to go on the beach! We also held our free Discover Sailing Day on the 29th of September. There was face painting, food, jumping castle, paddle boarding and of course sailing!

Sailability Bob Ogle

Another 3 months has passed so quickly and it’s time for another Sailability article to keep you avid readers informed on the latest happenings in Sailability.

We continue to operate out of Hollywell each Tuesday, and with the run of generally good weather we have had this year attendance figures have been up and we have consistently averaged around 80 clients each week.

Improvements are being steadily made to the fleet to make life easier for our volunteers – both yachts now have hydraulic lifters for the motors and one also has a new electric start 10 hp motor.

The pontoon boat has been fitted with a clear front screen to provide protection from the wind for passengers. Dinghy skippers have been issued with radios so they can call for a tow if they get tired, or are in trouble. An electric hoist for lifting clients into boats is on order to alleviate the work associated with the manual hoists we use at the moment.

All of these improvements are paid for from donations or grants received. With them we hope to improve the longevity of our volunteers and increase the average age from 75 to at least 100.

On the social/fundraising side over the past 3 months we had a Sailability MiniGolf day at Parkwood (we’re a bit old for the real thing), a Volunteer’s Social Day at

Dux where we enjoyed the ambience of the surroundings to the sound of music played by one of our newer volunteers who could play, a Bunnings sausage sizzle at Arundel where we cooked 44kg of sausages, and a fashion parade at the Allisee Complex at Hollywell, which allowed all our female volunteers, no make that some not all, to dream “If only….” .

Our main interface with SYC was our usual participation in the Blessing Of The Fleet. You may not have recognised the yachts – the hippie revival to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Woodstock or the beach party – with all the dressing up, but the pontoon boat, participating for the first time, was instantly recognizable as it was not. We didn’t want to coverup all the sponsors names with decorations. Woodstock kept up our recent tradition of winning the Best Dressed Boat prize, a tradition we intend to maintain in coming years.

We continue to compete in the Brass Monkeys and JAM racing at Hollywell on Wednesdays. After several series of top ten finishes by at least one of the yachts, we decided to give the other boats a chance in the latest series and are well back in the field at the time of writing. Look out next year though, after the boats have a bottom clean over Christmas.

SYC ran the Australian National ParaSailing Championships at Hollywell in August, and although not a Sailability event, we did have a big input to its running. Most of our fleet of Hansa 303 dinghies were chartered out (at a nominal price) to competitors from around Australia, while some of our volunteers were kept busy over the 3 days rigging the Skuds for that class.

This is the next level of sailing from what we do – not quite elite but aiming that way – and what we encourage any of our clients to participate in if they are willing and able. Most competitors in the regatta started their sailing at a Sailability somewhere.

So it has been a busy 3 months at the end of a busy year, but none of the above is to take away from what is our reason for existence – to provide a little pleasure in the lives of people with disabilities, some severe, by giving them a sailing experience on our beautiful Broadwater. Our volunteers have a passion for sailing which they want to share. If you are reading this you at least have an interest in sailing. If you know of anyone who might like to have a sail with us, let them know we exist, send them or bring them along to Hollywell on a Tuesday morning. We are always interested in having new clients and will never have too many.

Some of the support boat duties, working with the Off-Shore Fleet come with some knowledge of small boat handling, especially clearing the seaway bar, heading in or out.

If its not on the water activities for you, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved around the one of the three establishments of the Club, either Main Beach, Hollywell, or Oxenford Water Sports Centre.

This all comes with a little bit of experience and some training from the Sailing Officers at Hollywell, or one of the experienced support boat captains.

Call me to on 0427-815-224 if you have any questions about volunteering on weekends. It is a rewarding experience

to be out there to render assistance to the yachts should they be in peril of the sea.

When you volunteer to work off-shore a couple of safety requirements are mandatory Club rules:• Must wear a PFD (Personal Floating Device) (Life jacket) at all times.

• Always maintain a constant listening watch to the Radio. Act quickly, incase there is a person has fallen overboard from one of the competing yachts.

• Listen to all safety advice from your support boat captain .

• Consume plenty of water through the day.

• Just a tip: should you feel uneasy due to the sea conditions, consume some Chrystal ginger for best results, it works wonders!

• Sun-screen, hat, clothing to suit the day, are important to have when working off-shore.

Our Sailing Season is now well underway heading into the full calendar of events, and every Sat -Sun we will be requiring good number’s of volunteers to ensure the safety of all the competitors and their crews, on both days.

SYC Golf President Terry Stephenson

We have conquered three more courses since my last report.

On the 12th August, we drove out to play Beenleigh’s Windaroo Course, which we have done for the past three years. We had a field of eighteen.

Windaroo is what some might call a “country course”. The grass is fairly thin on the ground in many places. It was an enjoyable course to play, though with many a challenging hole. The winner was Commodore Ray McMahon with 57 points.

Coolangatta Tweed Heads was next on the radar. Weather was perfect and we had a field of nineteen this time. We played the River Course. They have two courses and they are both good. The winner with 57 points was new member, Brad Waters.

Emerald Lakes on the 14th October attracted a field of twenty eight. The weather was absolutely perfect and the catering afterwards was well above average. It is a very pretty course and a great improvement on what it used to be. The winner with 66 points and playing 12 under his handicap was Commodore Ray McMahon.

PAMIR

The Foundering of the Pamir

The PAMIR, was the last commercial windjammer to round Cape Horn in 1949. she shipped Australian wheat from 1931 and was seized as a “prize of war” in New Zealand in August 1941, as she was sailed

by German owners. Most of the crew and cadets on board during Hurricane Carrie were lost when the PAMIR sank off the Azores in 1957.

A tragic end to a gallant, beautiful vessel.

The Foundering of the Pamir:The worst was to be feared upon hearing the Morse code message “…..all sails lost…..list of forty-five degrees…… in danger of sinking.” When the British coastal radio station, Portishead Radio, received this message at 16:01 hours, on the 21st of September 1957, it became utterly clear to the recipient that many brave sailors were fighting for their lives. The eighty-six men and fifty-two trainee Cadets on board the training sailing ship “Pamir”, which was also carrying freight, were the senders of the message. The location of the ship was in the middle of a hurricane in the Atlantic, five hundred nautical miles southwest of the Azores. The condition of the ship was desperate.

She soon listed severely to port in the sudden storm. As hatchways and other openings were not closed at once, the water caused her to list further and the grain to shift, which aggravated the list.

The captain did not order the flooding of her grain-filled ballast tanks, which would have helped the ship to right herself. Once she listed to a point of no return, the lifeboats could not be deployed because her port side was under water, and her starboard side was raised to an angle that did not allow 24

the use of the boats. Three damaged lifeboats that had come loose before the ship capsized, were the only life rafts that had been deployed and were drifting nearby. None contained any provisions or working distress signal rockets. Many sharks were later seen in the area.

Although Captain Johannes Diebitsch knew beforehand that weather conditions at sea were not perfect, he gave command to set sail from the Argentinean port. The experienced Diebitsch was confident in his decision, as he had already sailed in storms in far smaller ships. After all, what could happen to such a large ship?

This lack of judgment was later described in the Luebeck Maritime Court, as “human error.” Unfortunately, this was not the only bad decision that led to disaster. The barley that was to be transported was not packed properly in sacks, but rather pumped into the hull as bulk goods.

In the hours that followed, the ship fell onto its port side. At this point the SOS radio message was released and the last broken message to come through said “…..mast broken.” Most of the men gave up hope on of rescue the Pamir.

Some crawled to the hull, attempting to somehow hold on, and others managed to climb into the three lifeboats.

Unfortunately, many to died.

The ship was able to send three distress signals before sinking. A nine-day search for survivors was organised by the United States Coast Guard, but only four crew members and two cadets were ever found. The rest of the crew perished 600 miles west-southwest iNSYnC - Summer edition 2019

of the Azores. None of the ship’s officers survived, so there was never any testimony as to how the ship was caught so unprepared for the hurricane.

On 10 August 1957 she left Buenos Aires for Hamburg with a crew of 86, including 52 cadets. Her cargo of 3,780 tons of barley was stored loose in the holds and ballast tanks, secured by 255 tons in sacks on top of the loose grain.

Records indicate that this was one of the major mistakes and a course of her sinking– she had been held up by a dockworkers’ strike, and Diebitsch, under severe pressure to sail, decided to let the trimming (the correct storage of loose cargo so that it does not shift in the hold) be done by his own untrained crew. It was later found that he also had the ballast tank filled with barley. Even though testing of the roll period (the time the ship took to right itself after load transfers) showed that she was dangerously unsafe, Diebitsch decided to sail. She soon listed severely to port in the sudden storm. As hatchways and other openings were not closed at once, the water caused her to list further and the grain to shift, which increased the list.

seized as a “prize of war� in New Zealand in August 1941 as she was sailed by German owners. Most of the crew and cadets on board during Hurricane Carrie were lost when the PAMIR sank off the Azores in 1957. A tragic end to a gallant, beautiful vessel.

iNSYnC - Spring edition 2019

Hello fellow boaties, from the Cruising Division of the Power Boat Committee.

Since the last edition of our magazine we have had two small cruises while a fair proportion of our regular cruisers were enjoying an extended cruise in Central and North Queensland waters.

September Cruise: A small fleet of five vessels met at Marine Stadium, however, by mid afternoon it was decided to up anchor and move to Budds Beach a day earlier than scheduled due to projected winds, much to the amusement of Paul and Bobbi on Martini, who had just arrived.

A very pleasant pre dinner drinks session ashore at Budds Beach, where we were joined by Peter and Debbie Miller. As is usual at this anchorage, we enjoyed a very sheltered and calm night.

Saturday morning we were joined by Kaye and Tom on Reality Cheque, and those who had not had breakfast at the local restaurant, all had morning coffee at the same venue. Dennis from Wirruna, however, had to wander into Surfers to replace his phone which had gone for an unscheduled swim!!!

That evening we all met ashore for a Bar BQ and drinks in the park.

Sunday dawned sunny and calm as we proceeded by tenders to the Bundall

markets for provisions and morning tea. Back to our boats for lunch and a relaxing afternoon and evening.

Labour Weekend Cruise: Meeting for lunch at Tipplers CafĂŠ were six vessels. Unfortunately, Les on Cavallino had to miss the cruise due to heat exchanger issues.

The usual pre dinner drinks session ashore followed by a relatively peaceful nights sleep.

Saturday morning saw us leave Tipplers before the weekend crowd arrived, and we travelled through Whalleys Gutter to Tiger Mullet anchorage. By this stage the predicted strong southerly winds arrived so it was decided to stay aboard our vessels, rather than venture ashore.

We waited for the rising tide on Sunday morning to travel through McKenzies, which is getting very shallow in places, enroute to Koureyabba anchorage.

Unfortunately Cy and Marion on Scallywag could not join us due to their anchor winch failing. Cy informs us that it takes a lot of strength to pull the

anchor up manually, into the wind and tide!!!

By late afternoon, the wind abated, and we were able to have our scheduled meeting ashore.

Monday morning had us travelling via Millionaires Row to Dux for customary Bar BQ dinner. As usual Dux is looking a real picture. Thanks to our wonderful Caretakers, Brian and Donna.

These were two very enjoyable cruises where we met some new cruisers for the first time.

As this is being written, we are about to embark on our Melbourne Cup cruise to Sanctuary Cove for Cup lunch, and then onto Canaipa Pt and Moreton Bay. We look forward to welcoming another three or four new vessels to the fleet.

Associates Committee Jan Benson

It is with sadness that we have lost one of our past members, Lorraine Alexander, who was a member of the Club from January 2000. Lorraine was Committee Secretary and Bookings Administrator from 2007 -09, Functions Coordinator from 2010-11, and Vice President from 2013-14 before retiring from the Committee. She was a very good friend to us all.

The Associates Committee’s fundraising activities for 2019 are coming to a close. With the support of the Club Management and our generous sponsors we are pleased to report a very successful year of fundraising for the Club.

Our last function for the year was our Melbourne Cup Luncheon held on November the 5th in the Compass Room with a record attendance of 148 guests.

The menu was a lovely 3 course lunch, which was by all accounts enjoyed by everyone, followed by our Fashions on the Field competition and sweeps. We had an Auction of an engraved wooden box containing 3 bottles of Vintage Wine donated by Rob and Laurie Frazer-Scott of Brygon Wines.

The Ladies and Gentlemen were outstandingly dressed for the occasion.

The glass balustrade option on the SYC Waterscape deck has over 1 tonne of glass on a 14m underslung covered gangway. This gives an illusion of slenderness and contributes to the graceful feeling of floating on water.

On the other side of the Waterscape are removable stainless posts and rope edge protection to allow berthing vessels for events. Even the cleats are custom designed with the Waterscape logo and the 37 degrees profile matches the fender to provide a gentle slope to the water rather than a hard edge.

Coconut and Macadamia Crusted Fish with pineapple salsa (serves 4)

Ingredients • 8 pieces of skinless fish fillets, such as Barramundi or Snapper (each about 3/4-inch thick) • 1/2 teaspoon salt • Ground pepper • 1/2 cup dry roasted macadamia nuts, finely chopped • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs Pineapple Salsa • 1 cup finely diced fresh pineapple chunks, • 1/4 of a cucumber, finely diced, seeds removed (peeled if desired); • 2 tablespoons finely diced red onion, rinsed; • 2 to 3 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander • 1/2 teaspoon fresh lime juice;

• 1/4 cup flaked or shredded coconut • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger • 2 egg whites • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

• drizzle of sesame oil; • 1/4 teaspoon salt and • freshly ground pepper to taste Mix gently and let the flavours develop for about 20 minutes before using.

Method 1. Heat oven to 200°. Pat the fish dry. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.

2. Mix chopped nuts, breadcrumbs, coconut, herbs, ginger, ½ the salt and pepper in a shallow dish.

3. Put egg whites and remaining salt into another shallow dish; beat lightly until frothy.

4. Dip fish into egg whites; let excess drip off. Coat fish on all sides in breadcrumb mixture.

Put onto a tray and refrigerate an hour.

5. Heat oil in large, non-stick ovenproof pan over medium-high. Add fish in a single uncrowded layer (use two pans if necessary). Cook until golden, about 2 minutes. Gently flip fish; put into oven.

Cook until crisped and fish is nearly firm, 5 to 7 minutes.

6. Transfer to heated serving plates. Serve with steamed rice, top with pineapple salsa.
