Todos los ojos están puestos en el balón! A partir del 14 de junio de 2018, medio mundo, más de 3.2 billones de gente, de norte a sur y de este a oeste, verán la Copa del Mundo (El Mundial) este verano ¡fútbol al máximo! Hay 32 países clasificados para el Mundial, el cual se llevará a cabo en Rusia. Lamentablemente Estados Unidos no competirá por el codiciado trofeo este año, ya que no calificó después de perder 2-1 contra Trinidad y Tobago, en lo que fue una derrota impactante. Sin embargo, el 25 por ciento de los equipos calificados (ocho de ellos) son del continente americano, lo que significa que los latinos desde Tierra del Fuego en la punta del sur de Chile, hasta Utqiaġvik, Alaska, harán todas las cosas a un lado y se centrarán en la suerte de sus respectivas selecciones, mientras le echan un ojo a los demás equipos y tal vez, incluso secretamente, le echen porras a Brasil. La Copa del Mundo reúne a los latinos, trae sueños a la vida y cuando uno de sus equipos gana cualquier partido y sobre todo el campeonato, se sien-

te como si los siglos de colonialismo y opresión se quitaran de encima, aunque sea solo por un momento.

La Federación Internacional de Fútbol Asociación (FIFA) es la organización que rige este deporte y es responsable por organizar la Copa Mundial. FIFA es una organización imperfecta, acusada de corrupción y escándalos sexuales en los últimos años, pero ni esto es suficiente para contener el entusiasmo sobre el Mundial.

El espíritu del deporte, de la danza sobre la cancha, de luchar con todo lo que uno tiene, está vivito y coleando, y profundamente arraigado en el corazón y la cultura de América Latina.

Por este año, tanto si eres un fanático del fútbol o no, oirás al Mundial derramarse por los televisores en restaurantes y bares, la gente sufrirá privación de sueño debido a las diferencias de tiempos y horarios, verás gente gozar y llorar, porque en la Copa del mundo hay esperanza y como Roger Milla, el delantero camerunés dijo: “Gracias al fútbol, un país pequeño puede ser grande.” ¡Vamos a jugar! (vea nuestra cobertura de los equipos latinos en la página 12).

Starting on June 14, 2018, half of the world, over 3.2 Billion people, from north to south and east to west, will watch the World Cup this summerfútbol soccer at its best! Thirty-two countries qualified for the World Cup that will take place in Russia, unfortunately the United States will not be competing for the coveted trophy as it did not qualify this time after losing 2-1 against Trinidad and Tobago in a shocking defeat. However, 25 percent of the teams (eight of them) are from the American continents, that means that Latinos from Tierra del Fuego in the southern tip of Chile to Utqiaġvik, Alaska will put all things aside and focus on the fate of their teams, while keeping a close eye on all the other teams, and maybe even secretly rooting for Brazil. The World Cup brings Latinos together, it brings dreams to life and when a Latin team wins any match, and especially the champion-

ship, it feels like centuries of colonialism and oppression lift, even if for a moment.

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is the international organization that governs the sport and is responsible for organizing the World Cup. FIFA is a very imperfect organization, accused of corruption and sex scandals over the years, but not even this is enough to contain the enthusiasm over the World Cup. The spirit of the sport, of the dance on the field, fighting with everything you’ve got is alive and well, and deeply rooted in Latin American culture and hearts. So this year, whether you’re a fútbol fan or not, you will hear it spilling from television sets in restaurants and bars, people will be sleep-deprived due to the time differences, you will see people cheer and cry, because in the World Cup there is hope and like Roger Milla, the Cameroonian forward said, “Thanks to fútbol, a small country can be big.” Let us play! (see our coverage of Latin teams on page 13).

Unidos en nuestro segundo aniversario

¡Feliz Cumpleaños!

Hace dos años nació Sol de Medianoche.

Al tomar sus primeros pasos, el periódico se encaminó a crear una voz y un medio por el cual la comunidad latina pudiera expresar su identidad, sus necesidades y sus metas, con el fin de unirnos y darle a conocer a nuestros amigos alaskeños quiénes somos. La misión de Sol de Medianoche es Informar, Educar y Unir. En este segundo aniversario queremos reiterar nuestra misión y metas, y hacer ahínco que Sol de Medianoche es el periódico de toda la comunidad latina y que tiene como meta unir y mejorar la vida de cada uno de sus miembros.

Para lograr nuestras metas el primer paso que debemos dar es determinar: ¿quiénes somos como comunidad?, ¿cuáles son las cosas que nos distinguen como comunidad?

Somos inmigrantes. Lo primero que vemos es que todos los latinos de Alaska, somos o tenemos vínculos con inmigrantes. Inmigrante no se define por tener o no algún tipo de documento, sino que hemos venido de otros lugares a establecernos acá y que nuestras raíces abarcan muchas partes del mundo. Aún si nacimos en Alaska, si nuestros ancestros vinieron de los 48 estados bajos o venimos directamente de nuestro país de origen, somos inmigrantes.

Tenemos que agradecer a las primeras poblaciones de Alaska y a todos las personas indígenas de Alaska por compartir sus tierras con nosotros – gracias.

Tradiciones. Las tradiciones de cada uno de nosotros son algo que nos distingue como comunidad. Nuestras comidas, nuestra música y nuestras celebraciones son algo de lo cual todos los latinos nos sentimos orgullosos. ¡La comida! ¿quién no se muere por una empanada, un taco, un bife…? Nuestra lista de comidas es interminable y todas con ese toque especial que le da ser de nuestros países. ¡Nuestra música! Una salsa, un merengue, un son, un reggaetón o una ranchera, nos traen recuerdos y nos ponen a bailar y cantar sin importar si venimos de una isla o de Los Andes. Nuestras celebraciones son algo que nos distingue como una comunidad diversa, nos traen historia, recuerdos y felicidad, entretanto nos dan a conocer

dentro de las demás comunidades con las que convivimos.

El idioma. Primero tenemos que aceptar que aquí nadie reconoce nuestros acentos. Para la mayoría de los oídos en Alaska el acento de todos nosotros es idéntico: inglés entrecortado que suena como canción de Shakira o de Enrique Iglesias. Segundo, celebrar que todos nos podemos entender el uno al otro sin necesidad de más. Esto es una gran ventaja y debemos reconocer que nuestro idioma es una herramienta que podemos y debemos utilizar para desarrollarnos como comunidad.

La distancia. Algo más que nos diferencia como comunidad es la distancia entre nosotros y los países que dejamos atrás.

Esto hace que debamos encontrar las cosas que tenemos en común como latinos, para sobrellevar la falta que nos hacen, familia, amigos y nuestras tradiciones. Además, estamos lejos de la protección y apoyo que podrían brindarnos los gobiernos de nuestros países. Los consulados escasean, y obtener beneficios de nuestros países de origen es muy difícil. Es extraño, pero la distancia nos une, nos fuerza a encontrar las cosas que tenemos en común para unirnos más como grupo.

Necesidades. Como grupo latino tenemos necesidades similares. Necesitamos ayuda con el idioma, nuestro estatus migratorio, mantener vivas nuestras tradiciones, sobrellevar la distancia que nos separa de seres queridos, encontrar los medios de sobrevivir en nuestra comunidad y hacer de éste, un mejor lugar para nuestros hijos e hijas. Es entonces, ante estas necesidades, que la misión de Sol de Medianoche responde para ser la voz que nos une.

La Esperanza. De nuestra alma latina, de nuestro calor, cariño y fuerza de corazón e intelectual nace la esperanza de que en Alaska continuaremos hasta iluminar el horizonte. En el verano los días son largos, en el invierno las noches son eternas, todos somos una luz en la oscuridad, un faro para nuestra comunidad latina. En este, el segundo aniversario de Sol de Medianoche, reflexionamos en el potencial que tiene nuestra comunidad y nuestros hijos para ayudar a construir en este gran estado, un mundo justo y lleno de riquezas para todos.

United in Our Second Anniversary

Happy Birthday!

Sol de Medianoche was born two years ago.

Its first steps were directed towards creating a voice and a medium through which the Latin community could express its identity, its needs and its goals. The ultimate goal was to unite us as a community and to show our Alaskan friends who we are. Sol de Medianoche’s mission is to Inform, Educate & Unite. On our second anniversary we want to reiterate those goals and stress that this paper belongs to all of the Latin community and its goal is to unite and better the lives of all of its members.

Out first step is to determine: who we are as a community? What are the characteristics that distinguish us as a group?

We are immigrants. The first thing we note is that all Latinos in Alaska, are or have ties to immigrants. Being an immigrant is not defined by whether or not one has one document or another, but rather by the truth that we came from somewhere else to Alaska and that our roots texted into many parts of the world. So, whether born in Alaska, if our past generations came from the lower 48 or we came directly from our country of birth, we are immigrants in this land.

Therefore, we must thank our hosts, the first peoples of Alaska and Alaska Natives throughout the state – Gracias.

Traditions. The traditions that each of us brings are what distinguishes us as a community. Our food, our music and our celebrations are things that make all Latinos proud. Our food! Who wouldn’t die for an empanada, a taco, an Argentinean steak…? The list of our foods is endless, and they all have that special touch that makes them unforgettable. Our music. Salsa, merengue, son, reggaetón, or a Mexican ballad, bring memories that make us dance and sign, no matter if we are from an island or from the top of the Andes. Our celebrations distinguish us as a diverse community, they bring history, memories and happiness while they give other communities around us an opportunity to know who we are.

Language. First, we must acknowledge that no one here in Alaska can differentiate our different accents. To most Alaskan ears our accent is exactly the same: English with a heavy Spanish accent that sounds like a song from Shakira or Enrique Iglesias. Second, we must celebrate that we can all understand each other without need for more. This is a

great advantage and we must recognize our language is a tool that we can and must use to evolve as a community.

Distance. Something else that marks us as a community is the distance between us and the lands we left behind. This forces us to find the things we have in common as Latinos in order to overcome the weight that distance sometimes brings.

We are far away from the support and

protection that the governments of our original countries could provide. Consulates are few and obtaining the benefits from our countries of origin is hard. Yet, it is clear that distance ultimately brings us together as a community. We have to find those commonalities and use them to grow stronger as a community.

Needs. As a Latin group we have similar needs. We need help with the language, immigration, keeping our traditions alive, dealing with the distance, and finding ways to survive in our community and make this a better place for our children. It is here, in response to these needs, that Sol de Medianoche provides a unifying voice.

Hope. From our Latin soul, our warmth, love, and strength of heart and intellect is born the hope that in Alaska we will continue to illuminate the horizon. In the summer the days are long, in winter the nights are eternal, and each of us is a light in the darkness, a beacon for our Latino community. In this, the second anniversary of Sol de Medianoche, we reflect on the potential that our community, and our children have to help build a just and rich world for everyone in this great state.

Para votar, hay que registrarse Hay múltiples maneras de hacerlo. Aquí encontrarás todo lo que necesitas saber para tu registro. por Dayra VAladez

¿Quién puede registrarse para votar?

Para registrarte para votar en Alaska debes: 1) Ser ciudadano de los Estados Unidos de América. Quienes posean una green card o cualquier tipo de visa no podrán votar.

2) Ser residente de Alaska. Un residente es alguien que vive en Alaska y que pretende permanecer en el estado de manera indefinida y formar un hogar aquí. No se requiere un número determinado de años para el registro al voto, como sucede, por ejemplo, para calificar para el Permanent Fund Dividend.

3) Tener 18 años cumplidos. Hay una excepción importante a este requisito: quien esté a menos de 90 días de cumplir 18 años puede registrarse para votar, esto quiere decir que cualquiera que cumpla años el 30 de julio puede registrarse para votar el 30 de abril.

4) No debes ser un criminal convicto. En casos excepcionales, un juez puede restaurar a los prisioneros su derecho al voto.

5) No debes estar registrado para votar en otro estado. Si así fuere, tendrías que cancelar el registro en el otro estado. Para ello, tendrás que marcar en el formato de registro la opción que otorga a la División de Elecciones del Estado de Alaska la capacidad de cancelar en tu nombre tu registro en el estado anterior. ¿Cuándo debe hacerse el registro?

Para poder votar en las próximas elecciones se debe tramitar el registro al voto al menos 30 días antes del día de la elección. Por ejemplo, el último día para registrarse para las próximas elecciones primarias será el domingo 22 de julio, ya que las elecciones primarias se llevarán a cabo el martes 21 de agosto, y el último día para registrarse para votar en las elecciones generales será el domingo 7 de octubre, ya que las elecciones generales se llevarán a cabo el 6 de noviembre. ¿Dónde registrarse?

Hay varias formas de registrarse. Puedes hacerlo en línea en: voterregistration.alaska.gov, o visitar el si-

tio www.elections.alaska.gov, seleccionar “Register to Vote” en el lado izquierdo, de ahí podrás seleccionar registrarte en línea o imprimir tu formulario. Te pedirán alguna información a través de cinco pasos y de ahí podrás imprimir el formato. Tendrás que firmar y enviarlo por correo o entregarlo personalmente en las oficinas de la DMV (Division of Motor Vehicles), o de la División de Elecciones. Cualquiera que sea el camino que tomes para el registro, tendrás que presentar alguna de las siguientes identificaciones (si envías el formato por correo tendrás que adjuntar una fotocopia): 1) Identificación con fotografía vigente y válida, puede ser algo tan sencillo como una credencial de la universidad con fotografía, 2) Licencia de conducir, 3) Pasaporte, 4) Identificación del estado, y 5) Acta de nacimiento.

Una vez que tu solicitud haya sido procesada por la División de Elecciones, recibirás una credencial de registro al voto. Este proceso toma hasta cuatro semanas. La credencial tendrá la información sobre dónde votar, el paso más importante del proceso.

Sobre la ayuda lingüística La División de Elecciones provee ayuda lingüística a los grupos minoritarios si más del cinco por ciento de su población en edad de votar habla un inglés limitado. De acuerdo con el censo y con la información reunida por esta oficina en Alaska, el español se encuentra entre estas lenguas. Who can register to vote?

In order to register to vote in Alaska, you must: 1. Be a United States citizen. This means that green card or visa holders are not eligible to vote.

2. Be an Alaskan resident. What does this mean exactly? A resident is anyone who lives in Alaska and intends to remain indefinitely and make a home here. There is no time requirement to meet, unlike, for example, qualifying for the Permanent Fund Dividend.

3. Be at least 18 years old. There is an important exception to this qualification. If you are within 90 days of your 18th birthday you can register to vote, meaning someone who has a birthday on July 30 can register to vote as early as April 30.

4. Not be a convicted felon. In rare instances, a judge may restore voting rights of felons.

5. Not be registered to vote in another state. If you are registered to vote in another state, you must be willing to cancel your registration in the other state.

There is a box on the voter registration form that, when checked, gives the State of Alaska Division of Elections authority to reach out to your former state of residence and cancel that registration on your behalf.

When can you register yourself?

In order to be eligible to vote in an upcoming election, you must register to vote within 30 days of the election. As an example, for the Primary and General elections coming up, the deadline to register to vote is July 22 for the August 21 Primary and October 7 for the November 6 General.

Where can you register?

There are a few ways to actually register to vote. You can do it online at voterregistration.alaska.gov. Or you can print an application online at www.elections.alaska.gov, click on the “Register to Vote” link on the left hand side and then select to register online or print out the paper form. You will be asked for some information and then be able to print and sign it, you can mail it in or you can go in person to the various Division of Elections or Division of Motor Vehicle Offices around the state.

2. Driver’s license 3. Passport 4. State identification card 5. Birth certificate Once your application has been processed by the Division of Elections, they will mail you a voter registration card. That process takes up to four weeks. The card will have the information you need on where to vote, the next, and most important, part to the voting process.

About Language Assistance The Division of Elections provides language assistance if more than five percent of the eligible voters of a given population speaks limited English. According to the census and the information gathered by the Division of Elections across Alaska, Spanish is among these languages. La ciudadanía es un escudo poderoso (y realista) En un simposio en Kirkland discutieron la inmigración en la era de Trump

orge Madrazo Cuéllar, ex Cónsul de México en Seattle y actual director del Centro de Estudios Mexicanos de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) Seattle, piensa que hay solo una manera sostenible para ayudar a los aproximadamente 3.5 millones de mexicanos que son elegibles para ser ciudadanos estadounidenses, pero que aún no han dado ese paso: enseñarles cómo hacerlo.

“Entendemos que la única manera de abrir un nuevo horizonte para la comunidad Latina en este país es empoderando a su gente”, Madrazo dijo la semana pasada durante un simposio sobre la inmigración en la Northwest University en Kirkland en el estado de Washington. “Y la única manera de empoderarlos es precisamente convencerlos y ayudándoles a hacerse ciudadanos estadounidenses. Tenemos que apoyarlos, y soy optimista.”

Según un estudio de Pew Hispanic Center en el 2013, los mexicanos son el grupo más grande de inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos que son elegibles para ser ciudadanos estadounidenses, pero sólo el 36 por ciento de ellos lo han logrado — en comparación con un 68 por ciento de los inmigrantes de otros países. Los mexicanos participantes en el estudio dijeron que les gustaría obtener la ciudadanía estadounidense para obtener los derechos civiles y legales, pero no lo habían hecho debido a barreras personales y administrativas.

Aún hay que ver si estos números se reducirán bajo la administración del Presidente Donald Trump.

Madrazo, que organizó conjuntamente el Simposio “Inmigración en tiempos de incertidumbre” el viernes, también supervisa un programa de ciudadanía que ofrece servicios gratuitos para personas

que deseen hacerse ciudadanos de Estados Unidos en los centros comunitarios de salud SeaMar, donde posee el cargo de Vicepresidente de Relaciones Comunitarias. El ex Cónsul y otros cuatro funcionarios de la UNAM participaron en el Simposio en Kirkland, donde compartieron sus ideas y preocupaciones sobre la situación actual de la inmigración en las ciudades donde trabajan — Seattle, Los Ángeles, Chicago, Tucson, y San Antonio.

“Lo que la UNAM, como institución, quiere de este evento es un plan de acción que funcione para la comunidad”, dijo Madrazo. “Hoy, hemos compartido muchas palabras. A partir de mañana, debemos tomar acciones en lo que mejor sabe la Universidad. Tenemos mucho que enseñar.

Ciudadanía, español, y civilidad. Nuestra gente está asustada y ansiosa, y tenemos que poner fin a eso dándoles información”.

El 8 de febrero, el rector de la UNAM, Enrique Luis Graue Wiechers, ofreció a los estudiantes mexicanos que son deportados bajo la administración de Trump, la oportunidad de continuar sus estudios en México.

Madrazo dijo que los acuerdos para hacer realidad ese apoyo son responsabilidad de la UNAM en México y no de él o de otros funcionarios de la UNAM en Estados Unidos; sin embargo, dijo que la UNAM ya está trabajando sobre diferentes formas para aprobar créditos previamente ganados por estudiantes mexicanos que son deportados, para que pueden finalizar sus estudios tan pronto como sea posible. La universidad más grande de Latinoamérica también está tratando de ayudar a aquellos estudiantes cuya lengua materna no es el español, a aprender el idioma a un nivel universitario.

Joseph Castleberry, Presidente de Northwest University y otro de los organizadores del simposio, dijo que el ámbito académico debe considerar el mundo actual pero también comprometerse con las necesidades humanas. Aseguró que el simposio logró que eso sucediera. “Hemos hecho nuevos amigos, hicimos nuevas conexiones,

se establecieron excelentes redes hoy”, dijo Castleberry. “Como universitarios, creemos que no hemos finalizado nuestra tarea académica hasta que el conocimiento que hemos conseguido a través del estudio, investigación, enseñanza y aprendizaje, satisfaga las necesidades humanas. Hoy,

abramos nuestros corazones y dejemos que las personas entren. Es el resultado más alto que uno puede esperar para cualquier tipo de estos eventos”.

Citizenship Is a Powerful (and Realistic) Shield A symposium in Kirkland discussed immigration in the age of Trump

orge Madrazo Cuéllar, former consul of Mexico in Seattle and current director of the Center for Mexican Studies UNAM Seattle, thinks that there’s only one sustainable way to help the roughly 3.5 million Mexicans who are eligible to become U.S. citizens but who haven’t taken that step yet: Teach them how to do it.

“We understand that the only way to open a new horizon for the Latino community in this country is by empowering its people,” Madrazo said last week during a symposium about immigration at Northwest University in Kirkland [Washington State]. “And the only way to empower them is precisely convincing and helping them to become U.S. citizens. We need to help them and I’m optimistic.”

According to a 2013 Pew Hispanic Center study, Mexicans are the largest pool of immigrants in the U.S. who are eligible to become American citizens, but only 36 percent of them have made it happen—compared to a 68 percent of immigrants from other countries. Mexican participants of the study said that they would like to get American citizenship to obtain civil and legal rights, but hadn’t done so because of personal and administrative barriers.

If these numbers will decrease under President Donald Trump’s administration remains to be seen.

Madrazo, who co-organized the “Immigration in Uncertain Times” symposium Friday, already supervises a citizen program offering free services for people who would like to become U.S. citizens at SeaMar Community Health Centers— where he holds a vice president of community relations position.

and concerns about the current immigration situation in the cities where they work—Seattle, Los Angeles, Chicago, Tucson, and San Antonio.

“What UNAM, as an institution, wants from this event is a plan of action to work for the community,” Madrazo said. “Today, we shared many words.

From tomorrow on, we have to take actions in what the university knows better. We have lots to teach. Citizenship, Spanish, civility. Our people are scared and anxious, and we have to put an end to that by giving them information.”

On Feb. 8, the rector of UNAM, Enrique Graue Wiechers, offered to give Mexican students who are deported under Trump’s administration the opportunity to continue their studies in Mexico.

Madrazo said that the arrangements to make that support real are the responsibility of UNAM in Mexico and not his or of the other UNAM officials in the U.S.; however, he said that UNAM is already working on different ways to approve previously earned credits from Mexican students who are deported, so that they can finish their degrees as soon as possible. The largest Latin American university is also looking to help those students whose mother tongue is not Spanish learn the language at a college level.

Joseph Castleberry, president of Northwest University and another of the symposium organizers, said that the academic world should think about the current world but also engage with human needs.

He said that the symposium made that happen.

“We made new friends, we made new connections, terrific networking occurred today,” Castleberry said. “As a university, we believe that we’ve not finished the academic task until the knowledge we’ve gained through studying, research, teaching and learning meets human need. Today, we opened our hearts and let people in. That’s about the highest outcome you can ever hope for for any kind of these events.”

Anchorage School District opens new Family Welcome Center

re you a newcomer to Anchorage with school-age children, looking for information and support? Do you have questions about the Anchorage School District, or need help with enrollment or registration? Would you like to learn more about school and community resources that can help you and your family? The Anchorage School District English Language Learner Program is available to help!

The Anchorage School District will be opening a new English Language Learner Family Welcome Center starting July 30, 2018, located at the ASD Education Center, at 5530 E. Northern Lights Blvd. The Welcome Center will offer services and resources for families who are from different countries or U.S. territories, or who speak languages other than English. Bilingual staff will be available to help with enrollment and initial English testing, share information about school district programs, and help connect families with community resources. New or returning families who have district-related questions, or would like information about school and community programs, please call Welcome Center staff at 742-4455, starting July 25.

All new to district students who will be enrolling in grades 6-12 must schedule an appointment at the Welcome Center before starting school.

Students who are new to Alaska and who speak a language other than English must take an English proficiency exam to determine if they are eligible to receive services from the English Lan-

guage Learner Program in ASD. This information will help school counselors choose the best classes for them.

Bilingual staff will be available to help families fill out district enrollment paperwork, review required documents, and make referrals to programs and services, while the students are testing.

New families who have students to enroll for the 2018-19 school year should call 742-4455 starting July 25, to make an appointment.

A parent or legal guardian will need to accompany the student to the enrollment appointment, and bring personal identification. The family will need to bring the following documents with them to enroll: • Proof of residency, such as a utility bill, or a contract of purchase or lease agreement • Official immunization records that show all shots received from birth to present (the state of Alaska requires specific immunizations before starting school) • Birth certificate, or alternate document verifying legal name and date of birth • Previous school records if available - especially important for high school students Note: ASD enrolls students without inquiring about their immigration status and without discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, or national origin. ASD does not ask for students’ or parents’ immigration status when they enroll. Students have a legal right to access public education regardless of their immigration status or their parents’ status. That right cannot be taken away or denied by the state or the school district.

El 5 de mayo de 2018, durante el evento del “Día del Sol” en el Museo de Anchorage, el Consulado Mexicano visitó esta ciudad para proporcionar servicios a los ciudadanos mexicanos y sus familias. El Consulado Sobre Ruedas procesó 269 documentos que incluyeron: certificados de doble ciudadanía, actas de nacimiento, pasaportes, tarjetas de identificación consulares y solicitudes de tarjetas de registro de votante. El Consulado sobre ruedas tiene una fecha tentativa en octubre para retornar a Alaska e incluirá visitas de trabajo a Anchorage y Juneau.

Seguir con el aprendizaje A

hora que el semestre ya casi terminó, la mayoría de nosotros dormiremos tarde y saldremos con amigos a jugar hasta la noche soleada del verano Alasqueño. Sin embargo, si vives en un hogar latino, tu madre probablemente tendrá una lista de “quehaceres” larguísima, que hay que completar antes de que ella regrese a casa, y ni hablar, también hay que ayudar a cualquier familiar o vecino a limpiar la cochera o ayudarles con sus tareas... ¡y de gratis! Probablemente escucharás el refrán “no lo hagas por dinero y sé agradecido”. No estás solo en eso, incluso mi madre quien se ha realizado y es exitosa, está todavía profundamente arraigada en las tradiciones que sólo conozco través sus experiencias y las de mi familia.

Mi madre emigró a este país con su familia en 1976. Yo soy americano de primera generación, nacido de una madre mexicana y padre venezolano. Sin embargo, mi madre también ha sido mi padre, pero eso es otra historia. Con mi mamá, obtener buenas calificaciones y ser exitoso académicamente no era una opción: era lo esperado. Se puede decir que soy un “buen” estudiante. Soy bueno para recordar algunas de mis tareas, en llegar a clase a tiempo (la

mayoría del tiempo) y para estar conectado en las redes sociales, incluso durante mi clase de matemáticas; también tengo fama por mantener mi cuarto limpio unos cuantos días a la semana. Mi madre dice que lo bueno puede convertirse en mejor, y lo mejor se puede convertir en excepcional, y que el esfuerzo es lo que hace la diferencia entre un estudiante con una calificación de “C” y uno con “A”. Estoy seguro que esto no te es extraño, así como lo escribo, pero tengo cuidado de no usar palabras que mi madre normalmente rechazaría, por respeto a ella y miedo a la “chancla”.

Estaba en 10º grado de secundaria cuando descubrí que no soy un estudiante tradicional. Al principio, mis maestros pensaron que tenía una discapacidad de aprendizaje o trastorno por déficit de atención, pero a través de los esfuerzos incansables de mi madre por enfrentar mis retos de aprendizaje, descubrimos que no padezco de los anteriores y que soy simplemente alguien que aprende de manera práctica y física.

Fue a través de estas pruebas y retos que llegué a King Career Center (KCC). Este último semestre participé en el programa de tecnología de energía diesel. No sólo descubrí que aprender puede ser divertido, sino que también terminé los programas

que ofrecieron en mecánica de aviación, tecnología de la aviación y soldadura.

Cuando regrese a la escuela este otoño voy a ser parte de la primera clase que se graduará de la secundaria técnica KCC en el distrito escolar de Anchorage. Inicialmente, estaba renuente a inscribirme a tiempo completo, pensé en mis amigos y en no graduarme con ellos. Pero naturalmente, mi madre lo puso todo en perspectiva (y de esa forma especial y estilo de madre latina), la cual te hace sentir culpable por siquiera haberlo pensado ya que no compara con sus experiencias y las de mis abuelos... tú me entiendes. Mi madre me hizo ver las grandes oportunidades de ser parte de la historia, contribuyendo a escribir nuevos capítulos e ideas sin fin para pintar sobre mi propio lienzo en blanco. Su perspectiva sobre la secundaria técnica KCC y sus palabras finalmente me entraron en la cabeza terca y vi lo que ella vio, potencial.

Muchos de nosotros tenemos padres que trabajan u hogares con padres solteros, así que nuestro trabajo en las vacaciones de verano será cuidar de nuestros hermanos, pero cualquiera que sean sus planes de verano, quiero decirles “continúen con el aprendizaje.” Hay muchos recursos en línea, por ejemplo, descubrí a través www.learningpath.org, recursos donde se puede uno registrar para cursos gratuitos, descargar libros, etcétera.

Se puede explorar el mundo y las oportunidades que están al alcance de la mano.

Hoy reflexiono acerca de cómo al final de cada año escolar cenábamos en familia con nuestros primos para celebrar pasar de un grado al siguiente. Al poco rato, mi madre preparaba una hoja de papel con la lista de nuestras actividades de verano, incluyendo campamentos, participación en la iglesia y voluntariado comunitario, talleres de desarrollo de carrera para jóvenes en la biblioteca pública local o participar abogacía social.

Si la oportunidad era gratuita, me inscribía.

Si la causa era social, hacía letreros o participaba un nivel elemental. En ninguna parte de esa hoja de papel estaba el dormir tarde o vagar con los amigos. Ahora me doy cuenta que mi madre fue construyendo cimientos para que yo descubriera mis propios intereses y agregara a esos mismos cimientos.

Quizás es por eso que regresar a KCC el próximo año me suena más emocionante.

Mientras que algunos amigos aún no hacen planes de verano, y otros se han graduado, me doy cuenta de que yo tengo un plan. Todos los veranos pasados, llenos de actividades que yo pensaba no tenían sentido y eran pérdida de tiempo, en verdad fueron formas en que mi madre promovió el aprendizaje y le dio forma a mi perspectiva hacia la vida y al hombre en el que me estoy convirtiendo.

Escribí este artículo como un americano de primera generación quien se conecta y trata de encontrar el equilibrio entre la crianza de mi madre, cual está conectada a sus padres, y la mía. A veces es un reto, pero si se logra dar un paso atrás y ver el panorama más amplio, se puede ahorrar muchos días de “vete a tu cuarto” y así quizás haya tiempo libre para dormir tarde y pasar el rato con tus amigos.

Keep the Learning Going

Now that school is out, most of us will get to sleep in, hang out with friends and play into the Alaskan sunny summer nights. However, if you live in a Latino household, your mother will probably have list of “chores” a mile long, which have to be done before she gets home, not to mention helping a family member or a neighbor clean the garage or help with their chores… for free! You will likely hear the saying, “don’t do it for money and be grateful”. You’re not alone in that, even my accomplished and successful mother is still deeply-rooted in traditions that I only hear about or experience through her and my family.

My mother immigrated to this country with her family in 1976. I’m a first generation American born to a Mexican mother and a Venezuelan father. However, my mother is both my parents – that’s another story.

With my mom, getting good grades and being academically successful was not an option; it was expected.

I guess you can say I’m a “good” student. I’m good at remembering some of my homework, I’m good at getting to class on time (most of the time), and I’m good at being socially connected even during my Math class, I’m also infamous at being “good at” keeping my room clean for couple days out of the week. My mother says that good can turn into better, and better can turn into exceptional, and that effort makes the difference between a “C” and an “A” student. I’m certain that this isn’t foreign to you, as I write it, I make sure not to use words that my mother would normally say out of respect for her and fear of the “chancla“.

I was in 10th grade of high school when I discovered that I’m not a traditional student type. My teachers thought I had a learning disability or maybe attention deficit disorder, but through my mother’s relentless efforts to address my learning challenges, we discovered I had neither and that I am simply more of a hands-on learner. It was through these trials and tribulations that I came to King Career Center (KCC). This past semester I was enrolled in the Diesel Power Technology program. I have not only discovered how fun learning can be, but I have also completed the aviation mechanics, aviation technology and welding programs offered.

When I return to school this fall I will be the in first ever graduating class from KCC Technical High School, in the Anchorage School District. Initially, I was hesitant to enroll full time, I thought about my friends and not graduating with them. Naturally, my mother brought it all into perspective-- in that special Latina mother style – you know, the one that makes you feel guilty for even thinking about it as she compares it to her experiences and her grandparents’ experiences… you get the point.

My mother made me realize the vast opportunities of being part of history, contributing to writing new chapters and endless ideas with which to paint on my own black canvass. Her perspective on KCC Technical High School and her words eventually made their way into my stubborn head and I saw what she saw, potential.

Many of us have working parents, or single households, so summer vacation means that taking care of our siblings will be our job, but whatever your summer plans are, I want to say “KEEP the LEARNING GOING.” You have many

resources online, for example I discovered through learningpath.org resources where you can register for free courses, download books, etc. You can explore the world and opportunities that are on the palm of your hand.

Today I reflect on how on the last day of school we would have a family dinner with our cousins to celebrate our move into the next grade. Soon after, my mother would prepare a sheet of paper listing our summer activities, including learning camps, church and community volunteering, career workshops for youth at the local public library, or participating in advocacy work. If it was free, I was enrolled. If it was a social cause, I was either making signs or participating at a grassroots level. Nowhere on that sheet of paper was sleeping in or hanging out with friends. I realize now that my mother was building a foundation so that I could discover my own interests and add to that foundation. Maybe that is why being at KCC next year sounds more and more exciting. While some friends don’t have summer plans yet, and others graduated, I find I have a plan. All those past summers taken up by activities that I thought were meaningless and a waste of time where actually ways my mother kept the learning going and that would shape my outlook in life and the man that I am becoming.

I wrote this article as a first-generation American who is connecting and finding the balance between my mother’s upbringing that is connected to her parent’s, and mine. It’s challenging at times, but if you take a step back and see the larger picture, it could save you many “go to your room days” so that in the free time you might get, you can actually sleep in and hang out with your friends.

Una nueva clínica orientada a la comunidad a comunidad más diversa de Anchorage se está preparando para recibir la tercera clínica de cuidados primarios cuando Mountain View Urgent Care abra sus puertas el 1º de agosto de este año.

“Es importantísimo”, dice Jasmin Smith, presidenta de la Junta de la Comunidad de Mountain View, “tenemos muchos residentes que no manejan, si no tienen que salir del vecindario será grandísimo”.

El edificio, localizado en Mountain View Drive, anteriormente alojaba el Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center y está al lado del Alaska Regional Community Clinic, que ahora se encuentra abandonado después de que cerró por falta de rentabilidad. Smith, quien fue paciente de la Regional Clinic, dice que espera que la nueva clínica pueda tener éxito donde las otras fallaron.

“Aunque la última clínica fue importante, no fracasó por falta de pacientes, sino porque no había suficientes trabajadores para abastecer las necesidades de los mismos”, dijo. Oficialmente, Alaska Regional aseguró que las razones para el cierre de la clínica fueron “pequeñas fallas sobre la estructura operacional planeada y pérdidas financieras en exceso sobre las proyecciones originales”, citado por KTUU el año pasado.

Junto con otro doctor, Van Ravenswaay dice que Mountain View Urgent Care tendrá siete asistentes médicos, así como personal de apoyo. De acuerdo al último censo, casi el 10 por ciento de la población de Mountain View es hispánico.

Hasta ahora, Smith ha dicho que se impresionó con la disposición de compromiso de la clínica para trabajar con la comunidad, en particular cuando Mountain View la contactó a ella y a los otros miembros de la junta directiva antes de la Reunión de Consejo. “Me parecieron muy respondientes” dijo, “pienso que serán un bueno socio de nuestro Consejo.”

nchorage’s most diverse neighborhood is preparing for the opening of its third primary care clinic when Mountain View Urgent Care opens on August 1st of this year.

“It’s extremely important,” said Jasmin Smith, president of the Mountain View Community Council, “There’s a lot of our residents who aren’t drivers, so not having to go out of the neighborhood will be huge.”

The building, located on Mountain View Drive, formerly housed the Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center and right next to the Alaska Regional Community Clinic, which now sits abandoned after it closed due to unprofitability. Smith, who was a patient at the Regional Clinic, said that she hopes that the new clinic can succeed where others failed.

“Even though the last facility was important, it didn’t fail because there wasn’t a need--it was because there wasn’t enough people on staff to accommodate the needs of the people,” said Smith.

Officially, Alaska Regional claimed their reason for closing the clinic was “shortfalls in the planned operational structure and financial losses far exceeding original projections,” as quoted by KTUU last year.

Along with himself and another doctor, Van Ravenswaay says Mountain View Urgent Care will have seven medical assistants on staff, as well as other support staff. The clinic will staff two full-time Spanish-speaking translators and will have other language services available via phone translation. The latest Census data showed that nearly 10 percent of Mountain View’s residents claim Hispanic descent.

So far, Smith has said that she is impressed with the clinic’s willingness to engage when they emailed her and the other board members before one of the board meetings. “They sounded very responsive,” she said, “I think they will be a great partner of the Council.”

Opening the clinic has been a yearslong dream for Dr. Van Ravenswaay, who got his start in healthcare working as a Health Coordinator for the Bristol Bay Native Association out of Dillingham. “I didn’t know anything about health care then,” he said, “but I guess that that job is what got me started in the healthcare field.”

After getting and associate degree at the Dillingham campus at UAF, he eventually enrolled in medical school through UAA’s WWAMI program. While still a student he heard about the closure of the Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center’s clinic and went to check it out the vacant building. “I went in there with a real estate agent and I remember even back then I told my father-in-law that this is where I’m gonna have my clinic,” he recalled, “I had heard also that at some point Alaska Regional opened their clinic [in that same building], so I thought, ‘That’s the end of that dream’ but they shut down within a few months.” At that point Dr. Van Ravenswaay was finishing his residency and signed the lease on the building as soon as he could.

n este momento, Alaska tiene dos brotes de infecciones de transmisión sexual (ITS), gonorrea y sífilis. Éstas ya han superado las altas tasas de clamidia que Alaska ha experimentado durante años. Desde enero de 2017, el cinco por ciento de los casos de gonorrea, clamidia y sífilis, y el 10% de los nuevos casos del Virus de Inmunodeficiencia Humana (VIH) en 2017 se encontraban entre los hispanos. Estas infecciones bacteriales son curables, pero pueden causar complicaciones graves de salud si no son tratadas. La mayoría de las personas con gonorrea y clamidia no tienen síntomas. Las personas que sí tienen síntomas pueden experimentar ardor al orinar, flujo vaginal o goteo en el pene, dolor pélvico e infertilidad. La sífilis puede causar una llaga indolora seguida de erupciones en la piel, pérdida de cabello y dolorosas llagas en la boca o los genitales. Sin tratamiento, la sífilis puede ser muy grave y causar daño neurológico permanente, como pérdida de la vista y del oído, o psicosis. Todas estas infecciones pueden ser muy graves en mujeres embarazadas y pueden causar complicaciones durante el embarazo y después del nacimiento.

Muchas personas no tienen síntomas de infecciones de transmisión sexual y VIH, por lo que la mejor forma de saber si se está infectado es hacerse una prueba con regularidad, especialmente si es sexualmente activo y no ha esta-

do usando condones, o si usa agujas para inyectarse drogas. Tener una ITS también aumenta su riesgo de contraer el VIH de dos a cinco veces si está expuesto. El Departamento de Salud y Servicios Sociales de Alaska (DHSS) recomienda que los adultos sexualmente activos se hagan las pruebas de detección de ITS, incluido el VIH, al menos una vez al año. Since January 2017, five percent of cases of gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis, and 10% of new cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in 2017 were among Hispanics. These bacterial infections can be cured, but can cause serious health complications if left untreated. The majority of people with gonorrhea and chlamydia have no symptoms. People who do have symptoms can experience burning on urination, vaginal or penile discharge, pelvic pain, and infertility. Syphilis can cause a painless sore followed by rash, hair loss and painful genital or mouth sores.

Without treatment, syphilis can be very serious and cause permanent neurological damage such as loss of vision and hearing, or psychosis. All of these infections can be very serious in pregnant women, and can cause complications during pregnancy and after birth.

Many people do not have symptoms of sexually transmitted infections and HIV, so the best way to know if you are infected is to get tested regularly, especially if you are sexually active and have not been using condoms, or if you use needles for drug injection. Having an STI also increases your risk of getting HIV by two to five times if you are exposed. The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) recommends that sexually active adults get tested for STIs including HIV at least once

For prevention of HIV, those at highest risk can talk to their doctor about whether pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), which is a prescription pill that is taken once daily for prevention of HIV infection, is a good tool for them. Vivimos el fútbol con pasión: ¿Qué podemos esperar de las selecciones de América Latina en el mundial de Rusia?

ntre el 14 de junio y el 15 de julio de 2018 se celebrará la XXI edición del Mundial de Fútbol que será organizado por Rusia por primera vez. El sorteo para la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2018 dividió en ocho grupos a las 32 selecciones que participarán. Este es un evento que se realiza cada cuatro años y los ojos del mundo entero están puestos en los partidos; el fútbol a través de los años ha logrado unir pasiones y sentimientos. Más allá de las estrategias tácticas con las que lleguen los equipos participantes a Rusia, las personas alrededor del mundo estaremos esperando que nuestra selección anote para simplemente gritar “¡Gol!”.

Yo soy de Bogotá, Colombia, la pasión del fútbol creció conmigo, mi abuelo paterno jugó en Millonarios, equipo actualmente campeón en Colombia; mis tíos, mi hermano y mi papá además de ver fútbol también lo jugaban y lo siguen haciendo. Sí hacemos una mirada alrededor del mundo nos damos cuenta que el fútbol más allá de ser un juego, reúne familias y amigos. En Colombia es habitual reunirse, en especial los domingos, para almorzar y ver los partidos que estén en el orden del día, no sólo los de la Liga local, también vemos los Europeos, ya que muchos de nuestros paisanos nos representan en el exterior. Tampoco puedo dejar a un lado a mi mamá, porque ella es la más aficionada al fútbol en mi familia; en esta oportunidad extrañaré estar a su lado viendo los partidos ya que ella está en Colombia. Así simultáneamente en cada país latinoamericano vivimos el fútbol con pasión.

Entonces ¿Qué podemos esperar de las selecciones de América Latina en este Magno evento? Tomaré cada país de Latinoamérica y les compartiré mi opinión de aficionada.

Argentina en las eliminatorias rumbo al mundial parecía muy probable que quedase fuera de la copa, hasta que Leo Messi, quien para mi gusto es el mejor jugador del mundo, metió un triplete contra Ecuador y aseguró el tiquete a Rusia. Él es el 50% del equipo, así que los argentinos pueden avanzar y probablemente llegar a una tercera ronda.

Perú terminó en quinto lugar de la tabla CONMEBOL (Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol) por lo que tuvo que enfrentar en el repechaje a Nueva Zelanda, obteniendo una victoria que le permitió su pase a la Copa del Mundo después de tres décadas. Personalmente creo que en el fútbol nunca hay nada escrito, pero el hecho de que Perú participe en este mundial es una gran victoria para los incas.

El equipo de Colombia, dirigido por José Pékerman, hizo una magnífica ac-

tuación en el Mundial pasado en Brasil.

James Rodríguez marcó ante Uruguay el mejor gol en la historia del seleccionado colombiano en un mundial. En esta ocasión clasificó en el cuarto lugar de la tabla de CONMEBOL y así obtuvo el pase directo en medio del caos de la última ronda de partidos en octubre. Sin embargo, los cafeteros tienen ahora en su lista de convocados a Radamel Falcao, quien batalló con lesiones y al final no pudo ir a Brasil, pero ahora se ve vital en el Mónaco y ésta será su oportunidad de ser goleador y figura. Colombia tiene muy buenos jugadores que militan en equipos de talla mundial, por lo que existe gran expectativa y se espera que lleguen más lejos de lo ocurrido en Brasil. Esperamos que Pékerman sepa mover las fichas.

México tiene su propia figura, Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, así que hoy los hinchas aztecas esperan llegar más lejos que los cuartos de final que alcanzaron en los mundiales en los años 1970 y 1986.

En esta ocasión tienen un gran rival, Alemania, actual campeón mundial y favorito para marcar historia y ser campeón del mundo dos veces consecutivas, además de enfrentar a Suecia y Corea que muy seguramente le van a dar la pelea.

Si Uruguay logra que sus delanteros Édinson Cavani y Luis Suárez mantengan su alto nivel, podría dar una gran sorpresa, ya que tiene una buena defensa y un mediocampo agresivo; si pasa a segunda ronda tendría que enfrentar a Portugal con Cristiano Ronaldo o a España con figuras como Piqué e Iniesta, partidos que seguramente serán para alquilar balcón.

En cuanto a Costa Rica, los ticos aseguraron su boleto a Rusia cuanto todavía faltaba disputar un partido clasificatorio, en el camino derrotaron a Estados Unidos

que quedó fuera. Esta selección fue sorpresa en el mundial pasado en Brasil, además tienen a Keylor Navas, el portero del Real Madrid. En el fútbol nunca debes subestimar al rival.

Brasil, campeón mundial en los años 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 y 2002; esta selección es mi favorita para ganar el mundial.

El equipo se clasificó de manera muy sencilla, liderando la tabla de CONMEBOL. Llega a Rusia con una mezcla de todo el estilo de las mejores selecciones sudamericanas, además de contar con la precisión técnica de los mejores equipos europeos, y por si esto fuera poco, también cuenta con el jugador más costoso del mundo, Neymar Junior y toda su magia.

Para Panamá es su primera Copa del Mundo y puede quedar tercera en su grupo. Clasificó en el último día del torneo hexagonal de la CONCACAF (La Confederación Norte, Centroamericana y del Caribe de Fútbol) tras gol de Román Torres contra Costa Rica. El gobierno Pana-

meño concedió un día cívico para celebrar su viaje al mundial.

El mundial 2018 será el mundial de las innovaciones tecnológicas, ya que la gran mayoría de los partidos serán transmitidos en formato 4K, una resolución hasta cuatro veces superior al formato HD y se permitirá el uso del sistema de video arbitraje VAR, para jugadas no claras al ojo humano de los árbitros dentro de la cancha. Los asistentes a los partidos deberán tener en sus manos el “Fan ID”, éste posee un chip que está asociado directamente con las cámaras de reconocimiento facial, documento que será obligatorio para ingresar a los estadios y para hacer uso del transporte público en Rusia.

Ya se sienten los nervios, la ansiedad y hasta la incertidumbre de qué cosas nuevas nos traerá este mundial. ¿Qué acciones serán recordadas como grandes anécdotas y quién será el nuevo campeón del mundo? ¡La fiesta más grande del fútbol está a punto de iniciar!

Fifa World Cup Russia 2018 We live soccer with passion: what can we expect from Latin American teams in the World Cup in Russia?

he 21st World Cup will be held between June 14 and July 15, 2018, Russia will host the World Cup for the first time. The draw for the FIFA 2018 World Cup divided the 32 participating countries into eight groups. The event takes place every four years, and the eyes of the whole world are on the matches; through the years, soccer has brought together passions and feelings. Beyond tactical strategies with which the teams reach Russia, people around the world will be waiting for their respective teams to score so we can simply shout “Gol!” I’m from Bogota, Colombia, the passion for football grew along with me, my paternal grandfather played in Millonarios, a team that is a champion in Colombia currently, my uncles, my brother and my dad not only watch football, they also played and still do. If we take a look around the world, we realize that soccer is not just a game, that it brings together family and friends. In Colombia it is customary to gather, especially on Sundays, for lunch and to watch the matches that are on for the day, not only the local league matches, but also the European games, as many of our ‘paisanos’ represent us abroad. I also can’t dismiss my mom because she is the biggest soccer fan in my family; in this case I will miss seeing the matches by her side since she is in Colombia. And just like that, simultaneously in each Latin American country, we live football with passion.

So then, what can we expect from the Latin American teams in this great event?

As a soccer aficionada, here is my opinion of Latin American teams.

Argentina has, in my opinion, the best

player in the world, Leo Messi. Messi seemed very likely to miss the Cup during the playoffs, until he made a triple score against Ecuador and secured his ticket to Russia; he’s 50% of the team, with him, the Argentines can move forward and likely reach a third round.

Peru ended in fifth place in the CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) standings, this meant it had to compete for its ticket to Russia in a playoff against New Zealand; after three decades, Peru got its pass to the Cup. Personally, I think that although in soccer nothing is ever certain,

the fact that Peru is competing in the World Cup is a great victory for Peruvians.

The Colombian team, managed by José Pékerman, gave a magnificent performance in the World Cup in Brazil. James Rodríguez scored the best goal in the history of the Colombia team at the World Cup against Uruguay. In that occasion, the team ranked in fourth place in the CONMEBOL standings and therefore obtained a direct pass amid chaos in the last round of matches in October. However, the Columbians now have Radamel Falcao on their roster. Falcao, who had suffered injuries and at the end wasn’t

able to go to Brazil, now looks lively in Monaco, this World Cup will be his opportunity to be a top scorer and player. Colombia has very good players who play on world class teams around the globe, fueling great expectations that the team will get further than it did in Brazil, we hope that Pékerman knows how to move the pieces.

Mexico has its own figure Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, today fans expect Mexico to go even further than the quarterfinals, which it reached in the World Cup in 1970 and 1986. This time around, Mexico has a great rival, Germany, the reigning world champion favored to make history by being champion twice in a row. In addition, Mexico will face Sweden and Korea that will very likely put up a fight.

If Uruguay’s forwards, Édison Cavani and Luis Suárez, can maintain their high playing level, the team could deliver a great surprise, it has a good defense and an aggressive midfield, if it makes it to the second round Uruguay will have to face Portugal with Christiano Roland, or Spain with greats like Pique and Iniesta, these matches will be certainly be exciting enough to rent a balcony.

Costa Rica secured its ticket to Russia while it still needed to play a qualifying match, and along the way defeated United States, which was then out of the running.

Costa Rica was an unexpected surprise at the World Cup in Brazil, and now it also has Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Keylor Navas…in soccer one must never underestimate the opponent.

Brazil was World Cup champion in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002; it’s my favorite to win the World Cup. The team qualified with great ease, leading the CONMEBOL standings. It arrives in Russia with the mix of the best style of the South American teams, and the technical precision of the best European teams, it also has the most expensive player in the world, Neymar Junior, and all his magic.

This is Panama’s first World Cup and it could end up third in its group. It qualified on last day of the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) hexagonal tournament (The last qualifying round for the World Cup) after a goal by Roman Torres against Costa Rica. The Panamanian Government declared a civic day to celebrate its entry to the World Cup The 2018 World Cup is one of technological innovations, the vast majority of matches will be broadcast in 4K, a format with resolution up to four times higher than HD, the use of “var”, the video arbitration system, will be allowed to help the referees’ human eye decipher unclear plays on the field. One can feel the nerves, anxiety, and even the uncertainty of new things that the World Cup brings. What actions will be remembered as great anecdotes and who will be the new champion of the world? The largest soccer party is about to start!

El campeón de esquí que tiene un bello toque en la nieve

abriel Sullivan, a la edad de 12 años se convirtió en el campeón de esquí en Alaska en la categoría U12 Slalom 2018. Cuando sus padres le dieron el uniforme con el que competiría, le pidió a su madre que cosiera la bandera mexicana en su hombro. Gabriel dijo que le gusta México, que es mexicano y quería mostrarlo. Comenzó a esquiar a los 2 años y sueña con algún día competir en los Juegos Olímpicos.

En la temporada de entrenamiento, Gabriel practica de 10 a.m. a 9 p.m. los fines de semana y los miércoles. Uno de los entrenadores le dijo a Mónica, su madre, que “Gabriel tiene un bello toque en la nieve”, como si se deslizará en la nieve libremente.

Además de esquiar, a Gabriel también le encanta tocar el piano y el trombón con una banda de jazz en algunos bares de Anchorage. Le pregunté, “¿Cómo haces para organizar la escuela, el esquí, y la música?”

El respondió, “Solo intento equilibrarlo.

Los fines de semana me enfoco en esquiar.

Pero, durante la semana, voy a la escuela y, a veces, temprano en la mañana, toco el piano y, por la tarde, toco el trombón. Además, mi madre me empuja a practicar.”

Gabriel y su familia van a México una vez al año a visitar la familia de su madre.

Allí, él no practica esquí o música porque prefiere pasar tiempo con su familia y disfrutarlos.

Las competencias de esquí en Alaska son muy demandantes porque los participantes entrenan rigurosamente, le pregunte, “¿Qué pasa cuando pierdes?”

“Aún cuando no gano, me pongo feliz

por los que sí ganaron. Sólo trabajo más duro e intento obtener la imagen del oro en mi cabeza. ¡Cuando estoy compitiendo me digo a mí mismo, ¡más rápido! ¡más rápido!”

Finalmente, le pregunto a Gabriel “¿Qué le dirías a las y los niños latinos sobre tu experiencia?”

El respondió, “Que sigan intentándolo y se esfuercen duro. Si crees que eres bueno, entonces esfuérzate más porque puedes mejorar e ¡intenta dar tu mejor esfuerzo!”

The Ski Champion With A Beautiful Touch In The Snow

abriel Sullivan, at 12 years of age, became the ski Champion of Alaska in the U12 Slalom 2018 category. When his parents gave him the uniform with which to compete, he asked his mother to sew the Mexican flag on its shoulder. Gabriel said that he likes Mexico, he is Mexican and wanted to show it.

He began skiing at age two and dreams of one day competing in the Olympics.

During training season, Gabriel practices from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends and Wednesdays. One of the coaches told Monica -his mom- that “Gabriel has a beautiful touch in the snow” as if he

glided freely on the snow.

Besides skiing, Gabriel also loves playing piano and trombone with a jazz band in some bars in Anchorage. I asked him, “how do you do to organize school, skiing, and music?” He responded, “I just try to balance it out. On the weekends I focus on skiing. But, during the week I go to school and sometimes I play piano early in the morning, and in the afternoon, I play trombone. Plus, my mom bugs me to practice.”

Gabriel and his family go to Mexico once a year to visit his mom´s side of the family. There, he doesn’t practice skiing or music because he prefers to spend time with his family and enjoy them.

The ski competitions in Alaska are very demanding because the participants train rigorously, I asked, “What happens when you lose?”

“When I don´t win, I am still happy for the ones that did win. I just work harder and try to get the picture of the gold in my head. When I am racing I tell myself go faster! go faster!”

Finally, I asked Gabriel, “What would you say to Latinx children about your experience?”

He said, “To keep trying and work hard. If you think you’re good then work harder because you can get better and try your best!”

Las Girl Scouts, más que vender galletas

uliette Gordon Low fundó las “Girl Scouts of the USA” en 1912. Fue una mujer inteligente, fuerte e independiente y creía en el potencial de todas las niñas. El 12 de marzo de 1912, llevó a cabo la primera reunión de la Tropa de Girl Scouts en Savannah, Georgia. Según la página web de la Tropa de Girl Scouts of the USA “desde esa primera reunión de una pequeña tropa con 18 niñas que eran de diversas culturas y etnias, Juliette rompió las convenciones de aquellos tiempos, superando límites de clase económica, cultural y étnica, asegurando así que todas las niñas, incluyendo aquellas que según estaban deshabilitadas, tuvieran un lugar para crecer y desarrollar sus habilidades de liderazgo”. La organización de las Girl Scouts of the USA tiene 1.8 millones de niñas miembros y a través de su membresía en la Asociación Mundial de Niñas Guías y Niñas Scouts (WAGGGS), es parte de la familia mundial de 10 millones de niñas y adultos en 146 países, incluyendo México y muchos países en Centro y Sudamérica.

En Alaska se estima (no todas las familias que participan reportan raza/etnia cuando se inscriben) que hay alrededor de 450 niñas hispanas, de ellas 200-250 en Anchorage, que son Girl Scouts.

La misión del grupo Girl Scouts es: “desarrollar a niñas con el valor, la confianza y el carácter para hacer del mundo un lugar mejor”. Una de las maneras en que lo hace es ofreciendo experiencias de liderazgo únicas en todos los niveles que tienen (Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette, Senior, Ambassador). El liderazgo en el mundo de esta agrupación se define como “el saber quién eres y lo que representas” y “todos los días tomar decisiones que inspiran a otros a hacer un cambio positivo en el mundo.”

Además de desarrollar habilidades de liderazgo, Girl Scouts les da la oportunidad de aprender nuevas habilidades a través de participación en diferentes actividades. He aquí algunos ejemplos: reuniones de tropas, aprendizaje en el programa STEM (Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas) a través de la participación en ferias; campamentos de una semana (durante el día solamente o día y noche) y también vendiendo galletas de Girl Scouts. he Girl Scouts of the USA were started in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low. Gordon Low was a smart, strong, and independent woman who believed in the potential of all girls. On March 12, 1912, Juliette Gordon Low held the first Girl Scout Troop meeting in Savannah, Georgia. According to the Girl Scout of the USA webpage “from that first gathering of a small troop of 18 culturally and ethnically diverse girls, Juliette broke the conventions of the time – reaching across class, cultural, and ethnic boundaries to ensure all girls, including those with so called disabilities, had a place to grow and develop their leadership skill.” Today, the Girl Scouts in the USA has over 1.8 million girl members, and through its membership in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a worldwide family of 10 million girls and adults in 146 countries, including Mexico and many Central and South American countries. I signed up to be a parent volunteer with the program four years ago when my daughter was in 1st Grade. The next year, with the help of another mom, I started a new Troop. Latinx Hasta la Raíz sembrando semillas

ntre salsa, merengue, samba y mariachi, la juventud Latinx exploró ritmos que les unen con sus abuelos y los lugares de la infancia. Algunos nacieron aquí, otros vinieron muy chiquitos y otros pertenecen a familias multiculturales. De la mano de músicos como Mariana Arteaga, una de las fundadoras del único mariachi en Alaska, se hicieron manifiestas las canciones que hacen retumbar los hogares latinos.

Mariano Gonzales dispuso que los colores abrieran el puente entre lo familiar y lo nuevo, como juntando los mundos en los que viven los Latinx en Alaska. Muchos conocen la situación en Latinoamérica porque es un tema constante en sus familias. Pero también son imágenes lejanas y a veces un pasado histórico desconocido y a menudo tergiversado.

Las esculturas de alambre y papel elaboradas bajo la guía de la artista mexicana Macuca Cuca muestran la libertad de ser y de crear en los Latinx, quienes trabajaron en su propio alebrije: aves, cerditos voladores y seres mixtos con texturas y colores diversos.

Se pintaba mientras escuchaban poesía de poetas latinos e historias sobre líderes que han contribuido a una mejor calidad de vida como Cesar Chávez, Benito Juárez, Simón Bolívar, entre otros. También tuvieron la oportunidad de conversar con escritores locales como Bryan Fierro quien de manera franca habló sobre sus experiencias

al crecer en los Estados Unidos y como llegó a escribir su libro Dodger Blue Will Fill Your Soul (Dodger Blue Llenará tu Alma).

Las poesías que escribieron los participantes durante el taller hablan sobre sus objetos favoritos, sus recuerdos, deseos y los personajes que los inspiran. Basta leer unos fragmentos para darse cuenta del potencial y el patrimonio en las generaciones jóvenes de Latinx.

Poco a poco fueron tomando forma las esculturas, las pinturas y los poemas, abriendo una pequeña ventana expuesta en el Museo de Anchorage durante la celebración del Día del Sol el pasado 5 de mayo.

Gracias al trabajo arduo de Indra Arriaga y Jessica Raymond, coordinadoras del proyecto, a todos los artistas mentores y a Francesca DuBrock quien hizo posible la exhibición en el museo, Latinx Hasta la Raíz sembró semillas con la esperanza de que germinen.

mong salsa, merengue, samba and mariachi, Latinx youth explored rhythms that unite them with their grandparents and places of childhood. Some of them were born here, others came very young and others belong to multicultural families. Hand in hand with musicians like Mariana Arteaga, one of the founders of the only mariachi in Alaska, the songs that make Latin homes rumble became manifest.

Mariano Gonzales arranged for colors to open the bridge between the familiar and the new, as bringing together the worlds in which the Latinx live in Alaska.

Many know the situation in Latin America because it is a constant theme in their families. But those are also distant images and sometimes an unknown historical past, often distorted.

The wire and paper sculptures made under the guidance of the Mexican artist Macuca Cuca show the freedom to be and create in the Latinx, who worked on their own alebrije: birds, flying pigs and mixed beings with different textures and colors.

They were painting while listening to the poetry of Latin poets and stories about leaders who have contributed to a better quality of life such as Cesar Chavez, Benito Juarez, Simon Bolivar, among others. They also had the opportunity to talk with local writers such as Bryan Fierro who talked frankly about his experiences growing up in the United States and how he wrote his book Dodger Blue Will Fill Your Soul.

The poems that the participants wrote during the workshop talk about their favorite objects, their memories, desires and the persons that inspire them. By reading some fragments one can realize the potential and

heritage in the young Latinx generations.

Little by little the sculptures, the paintings and the poems were taking shape, opening a small window exposed in the Anchorage Museum during the celebration of Día del Sol on May 5th.

Thanks to the hard work of Indra Arriaga and Jessica Raymond, coordinators of the project, to all the mentoring artists and to Francesca DuBrock who made the Museum exhibition possible, Latinx Hasta la Raíz planted seeds with the hope that they germinate.
